XFL Week 18: Mercenaries Push League-Leading DC to Limit, Edged 29-28 in Season Finale
June 17, 2023
Munich, GERMANY - The Munich Mercenaries' inaugural season ended with a 28-29 loss to the Washington Defenders. QB Jack Coan completed 34 of 48 passes for 312 yards while RB Jacques Patrick had his first multi-touchdown game with two rushing touchdowns. The Defenders wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, as QB Jordan Ta'amu was a perfect 3-for-3 for 60 yards passing on a 68-yard opening drive capped with a 5-yard touchdown pass from Ta'amu to TE Alex Ellis. DC completed the 2-point conversion with a pass from Ta'amu to WR Josh Hammond. Much of the possession's progress came on a 52-yard reception by WR Lucky Jackson, who was brought down at Munich's 5-yard line. Unlike the Defenders' drive, the Mercenaries ate up clock on their first possession, marching 64 yards down the field in 16 plays. After eight minutes and 35 seconds, K Parker Romo nailed his XFL-leading 30th field goal of the season, this one from 26 yards out. DC wasn't on the field for long on its next drive either, thanks to a 79-yard kickoff return by do-it-all running back and WR Pooka Williams. The University of Kansas product took the kickoff to the Mercenaries' 7-yard line for the third-longest return in the XFL this season. The Mercenaries defense stood tall to force a field goal, and DC K Matt McCrane finished the quick possession with a 21-yard chip shot field goal to put the Defenders up 11-3. After Ta'amu completed passes for 25 and 28 yards, LB Jordan Williams thwarted a promising DC drive with an interception, returning it 34 yards to the Defenders' 44-yard line with 26 seconds remaining in the first half. Two plays later, WR Landen Akers reeled in a 37-yard pass from QB Jack Coan with 11 seconds left. With three seconds remaining, RB Jacques Patrick barreled into the end zone from a yard out for a Munich score. Coan then hit WR TJ Vasher for the 2-point conversion to make it 19-11 at the break.
The Mercenaries carried their offensive momentum into the second half, as a 28-yard field goal by Romo brought Munich within 19-14. Coan completed six of seven passes on the drive for 50 yards on the 11 play, 60 yard possession. However, DC responded with a field goal of its own. After opening their drive with three-straight plays of over 10 yards, the Defenders settled for a 49-yard kick by McCrane to up their lead to 22-14. Mercenaries' offense continued to heat up, picking up 75 yards on nine plays on its next drive. RB Jonathan Hilliman reached paydirt on a 1-yard touchdown run, but the 2-point conversion was no good, bringing Munich within a couple points at 22-20. Coan connected on five of six passes for 53 yards on the scoring drive. The Mercenaries' defense got in on the fun by stifling another DC drive with a turnover. At the Munich 44-yard line, DB Luq Barcoo ripped the ball out of the grasp of WR Lucky Jackson for their second turnover. Munich stayed hot with a 10-play, 63-yard touchdown drive to grab its first lead of the game. Coan completed six of eight passes for 56 yards before Patrick capped the possession with a 2-yard score on third down. With 5:15 left, Coan made it a 28-22 game with a complete 2-point conversion pass to Hilliman. DC was efficient in its response, leading a 5-play, 69-yard drive to retake the lead at 29-28 with 2:32 remaining. A 20-yard pass, Munich penalty, 13-yard Ta'amu rush and 27-yard pass put the Defenders within four yards of the end zone. Ta'amu then marched in for the tying touchdown before taking in the 1-point conversion himself for the edge.

XFL Week 18: Dragons Complete Playoff Push by Topping Las Vegas
June 19, 2023
Seattle, WA - After a crucial victory in Week 17 against the London Crusaders, the Dragons head home to Lumen Field to take on the Las Vegas Vipers in a must win season finale to clinch the final playoff berth. On the initial drive in the first quarter for the Dragons, K Dominik Eberle missed an early 39-yard field goal. Overall for both teams, it was a very quiet first quarter where both teams were held scoreless. Midway through the second quarter, LB Tuzar Skipper, recorded his 12th sack of the season, giving the ball back to the Dragons and momentum for their next offensive series. Soon after, QB Ben Dinucci orchestrated his offense down the field and cleaned up the drive after scoring a 14-yard rushing touchdown to put the Dragons up 6-0 following the missed 3-point conversion. Going into the third quarter, the Dragons regrouped at halftime and came out firing after DiNucci found Pearson streaking downfield for a 33-yard touchdown pass to extend the score to 14-0 after the successful 2-point conversion to WR Josh Gordon. The Vipers responded on their next series with a 53-yard field goal by K Sam Sloman, cutting the lead to 14-3. Shortly after, the Dragons came out on their next series aggressive when DiNucci spotted WR Juwan Green for a 37-yard touchdown pass, widening the gap to 20-3 after the failed 2-point conversion try.
In the final quarter of the XFL regular season, DiNucci connected with WR Jordan Veasy in the corner of the end zone for a 3-yard diving touchdown, increasing the score to 28-3 following the successful 2-point conversion attempt to WR Blake Jackson. The Dragons defense carried the strong offensive momentum onto their side of the field when DB Qwynnterrio Cole intercepted QB Jalan McClendon, giving the ball right back to the Dragons. The Dragons looked to officially clinch a playoff berth on their next drive but was shortly interrupted after DB Marwin Evans picked off DiNucci in the end zone. Seattle regained possession of the ball after forcing the Vipers to punt, but failed to score again after DiNucci threw his second interception of the game to DB Jamar Summers. On the ensuing series for the Vipers, McClendon linked up with WR Mathew Sexton for an 81-yard pass. On the same play, DB Mykael Wright forced Sexton to fumble at the 1-yard line before entering the end zone, but the Vipers regained the ball back after the ball went out of bounds in the back of the end zone. After the dispute on the possession, RB Shai McKenzie finished the series with a 1-yard rushing touchdown to trim the lead to 28-9. The Dragons ran the clock off on their next series, securing themselves a playoff spot.
