XFL Week 18: Panthers Fall to Stampede 20-19 in Season Finale

July 27, 2024

Oklahoma City, OK - The Detroit Panthers fell to the Oklahoma City Stampede, 20-19. After the Stampede scored the game-tying touchdown with 1:04 remaining, QB Adrian Martinez found a wide-open TE Marcus Baugh on the one-point conversion to take their first lead of the game since early in the first quarter. Detroit had time to drive downfield and send K Jake Bates out to win the game with his leg with three seconds left, but the star kicker pushed a 53-yard attempt wide right. It was still an impressive showing from the Panthers. After giving up 162 rushing yards and seven sacks and recording no sacks of their own against the Stampede in their Week 2 matchup, the Panthers only gave up 103 rushing yards and one sack and recorded five sacks of their own. For the second straight week, Etling made the start for the Panthers. Etling totaled 231 yards on the afternoon. After a Panthers three-and-out to start the game, the Stampede found the endzone on their first possession with a RB CJ Marable one-yard touchdown run. TE Jace Sternberger helped Oklahoma City get down the field with a 49-yard catch-and-run. The two-point conversion was no good, but the Stampede led 6-0 early. Detroit responded with points of their own with a 39-yard Bates field goal. The Panthers defense started to make an impact late in the first quarter with sacks on back-to-back plays from DL Garrett Marino and DB Bryce Torneden. Detroit tallied more sacks on the drive than they did all game in their last matchup against Oklahoma City in Week 2. Etling gave Detroit the lead to start the second quarter with a 23-yard rushing touchdown. The eight-play, 75-yard drive lasted five minutes and featured five plays of over 10+ yards. RB Toa Taua ran in the one-point attempt to make it a 10-6 game. The Panthers were not done getting to Martinez, as LB Javin White notched his first sack of the season. Etling made another splash before halftime with a 46-yard bomb to WR Siaosi Mariner for a touchdown and took a 10-point lead into the break.

Oklahoma City did not waste any time, opening the second half with a touchdown. It was another Marable rushing score, this time from 20 yards out. Martinez ran in the one-point conversion to get within a field goal. With QB Bryce Perkins now in the game for Detroit, the quarterback made a big play with his legs near the end of the third quarter, even hurdling a Oklahoma City defender for an 18-yard gain. Perkins was hurt on the run, and Etling came back into the game. Perkins did not return to the and was ruled questionable due to a hamstring injury. Etling finished what Perkins started, putting together another scoring drive capped off by a 44-yard field goal by Bates to lead 19-13 in the early phases of the fourth quarter. Oklahoma City had the ball with two minutes remaining in the game and on Detroit's side of the field. Martinez was looking to go deep to Sternberger, but DB Kai Nacua made a potential game-saving play with a pass breakup with one hand. It did not mean as much, as the Stampede converted a fourth down two plays later with an 18-yard pass to WR Kevin Austin. With 1:04 on the clock, Martinez found a wide open Sternberger for the game-tying touchdown. The Stampede took the lead with a successful one-point conversion with a pass to TE Marcus Baugh. That made the difference in this game, as Oklahoma City went on to win and clinch the one seed in the Western Conference.

XFL Week 18: Crusaders Clinch Home Field with 13-12 Win over Thunder

July 27, 2024

London, ENGLAND - The London Crusaders secured home-field advantage for the Eastern Conference Championship with a 13-12 victory over the Berlin Thunder in front of 44,379 fans. London held a 13-6 lead at the 2-minute warning, but the Thunder scored on a 37-yard touchdown pass from QB Quinten Dormady to WR Jontre Kirklin with 1:56 remaining to shave the Crusaders' lead to one point. Dormady completed a pass to Kirklin from the 2 yard line after a London penalty for a 2-point conversion, which the referees initially ruled short of the goal line. Officials overturned the spot of the ball on review, which gave Berlin a 14-13 lead, but London challenged an ineligible man downfield penalty that negated the conversion. Dormady then threw an incomplete pass on the following attempt from the 7 yard line, and London maintained the lead. London punted on its next drive. With 50 seconds left to make a comeback, Berlin reached the 33 yard line with 12 seconds to play. K Ryan Santoso attempted an unsuccessful 51-yard field goal that WR Hakeem Butler tipped to seal the Crusaders one-point triumph to end the regular season.

The Crusaders initially built a 10-point lead in the first half. The teams committed a combined three turnovers in the first 16 minutes of play, but London broke through on a 22-yard touchdown pass from QB AJ McCarron to WR Steven Mitchell with 11:54 to play in the second quarter. McCarron also found TE Jake Sutherland for a 1-point conversion to complete the drive and put London ahead, 7-0. K Andre Szmyt increased the Crusaders' lead to 10-0 with 2:03 remaining before halftime on a 32-yard field goal, which completed a 13-play, 82-yard drive that covered 7:16 of game time. Santoso attempted a 59-yard field goal for Berlin with 16 seconds left in the half, but TE Kemari Averett blocked the attempt to preserve the first-half shutout. Berlin scored its first points on the first drive after halftime when RB Morgan Ellison rushed 6 yards for a touchdown to cap an 8-play, 75 yard march.

XFL Week 18: Renegades Cap off Season with 32-31 Win over Defenders

July 28, 2024

Washington, DC - The Dallas Renegades took down the Washington Defenders at Audi Field, 32-31. Dallas closes out the season winning three of their last four games, after starting out the year with six consecutive losses. The Renegades jump started the game with an impressive 10-play, 63-yard drive that concluded with a 27-yard field goal knocked in by K Jonathan Garibay. On the ensuing kickoff, Defenders' WR Chris Rowland ripped off a 55-yard return, setting DC up in Dallas territory for their first drive of the afternoon. K Matt McCrane would convert on a field goal from 44 yards out, knotting things up at 3-3. Following back-to-back punts by both teams, QB Luis Perez would be picked off for just the third time this season, with DC DB Gareon Conley coming up with the interception. Dallas' defense came up with a big fourth down stop to begin the second quarter, with LB Donald Payne picking up the crucial tackle for loss. The Renegades capitalized on the stop with a 40-yard field goal by Garibay just eight plays later, giving them a 6-3 lead. On the stemming kickoff, Rowland returned it 84 yards to the house for DC, giving Dallas their first deficit of the game at 9-6. After another punt by the Renegades, the Defenders would score yet again, as QB Jordan Ta'amu connected with WR Vyncint Smith for a 43-yard touchdown. Trailing 15-6, the Renegades would find paydirt just before halftime, as Perez hit WR Tyler Vaughns in the back of the end zone for a five-yard touchdown. A successful two-point conversion reception by RB Devin Darrington from Perez made it 15-14 going into the half.

Starting on defense in the third quarter, the Renegades were hit with two big pass interference penalties. The Defenders would score once again, as RB CamRon Harris punched it in from a yard out, putting Dallas down 21-14. The Renegades would settle for another field goal on their first drive of the second half, as Garibay converted from 36 yards out. Dallas forced a DC three-and-out and were driving as the third quarter came to a close. The Renegades re-captured the lead early in the fourth quarter, as Perez found Vaughns in stride for a 34-yard touchdown, his second of the afternoon. Vaughns would make good on the two-point conversion rush, putting Dallas up 25-21. The Defenders responded with a 5-play, 69-yard scoring drive of their own, finished off with a 40-yard touchdown pass from Ta'amu to WR Brandon Smith. A successful two-point conversion from Ta'amu to TE Alex Ellis put DC back in front, 29-25. On the ensuing kickoff, Dallas WR Juwan Manigo gave himself up in his end zone, resulting in a wild safety for the Renegades. A second interception thrown by Perez gave the Defenders the ball back. Dallas' defense would come up huge with back-to-back sacks on Ta'amu, thanks to Payne and DL DaVonte Lambert, pushing McCrane to miss a 54-yard field goal. The Renegades marched down the field to regain the lead late, as Perez linked up with WR Deontay Burnett for a 7-yard touchdown. A one-point conversion rush by RB De'Veon Smith put Dallas up, 32-31, with 2:28 remaining. A fourth down stop on the last drive of the game gave the Renegades the win in their season finale.

XFL Week 18: Showboats Finish Season with 19-12 Win Over Houston

July 28, 2024

Salt Lake City, UT - Showboats RB Darius Victor scored two rushing touchdowns and the defense made a huge late-game stop as the Showboats defeated the Houston Roughnecks 19-12. The victory in the season finale for Salt Lake City snapped an eight-game losing streak and bookended a season that started with a win over Houston and ended with a win over Houston. Houston trailed 12-9 late in the third quarter, but looked to have taken the lead when DB Markel Roby intercepted QB Josh Love and took it all the way back to the end zone. The return for a touchdown was negated by a penalty during the return. The Salt Lake defense held Houston to a field goal early in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 12-12. On the ensuing possession, the Showboats took over at their own 47-yard line and drove 53 yards for the go-ahead score. Love passed for 44 yards on the drive and Victor hit paydirt from 2 yards out for his second score of the game. A Love-to-Daewood Davis pass for the one-point conversion left Salt Lake with a 19-12 lead and 6:10 remaining in the contest. Houston drove all the way to the 13-yard line behind QB Nolan Henderson. But on 3rd-and-3 from the 13, DL Lamont McPhatter stopped WR Justin Hall for no gain. On 4th-and-3, the Showboats defense forced an incompletion with less than a minute left to seal the victory.

Salt Lake led 6-3 at the intermission in a battle of field goals. The Showboats K Matt Coghlin was 2-for-2 in the first half, including a 46-yarder on the last play of the first half to give Salt Lake the lead at halftime. The Showboats pushed their lead to 12-3 on a 2-yard Victor touchdown run with 5:55 remaining in the third quarter. Houston answered on its next possession with a 61-yard march capped by a RB Kirk Merritt 1-yard touchdown run. K JJ Molson's early fourth quarter field goal tied it at 12-12. Victor rushed for 54 yards on 10 carries and scored both the Showboats' touchdowns. Love was 20-of-29 for 152 yards with 1 interception. WR Jonathan Adams paced the Salt Lake receiving corps with six receptions for 59 yards. Henderson led Houston with 43 yards rushing and 232 yards passing. Houston out-gained Salt Lake 323-203, but the Showboats' defense found stops when they needed them. Salt Lake held Houston on 4th-and-2 from the Showboat 8-yard line in the first quarter and on 4th-and-3 on the final Roughnecks possession of the game.

XFL Quarter-Final: Berlin Best Crusaders 25-15

August 4, 2024

London, ENGLAND - Berlin jumped out to an early 13-0 lead, and fought off a second half rally from the London Crusaders as the Bolts advanced, 25-15, in front of 40,237 fans. The Berlin offense fired on all cylinders with a season-high 410 total yards. They also recorded their longest rush of the season on a 69-yard RB Anthony McFarland score on their first play of the second half, and the team's longest reception of the season on a QB Chase Garbers to WR Justin Smith 63-yard touchdown connection in the second quarter. Garbers led Berlin down the field on their first possession of the game, a 10-play, 62-yard drive to the five-yard line of the Crusaders, before being turned down by a DB Kameron Kelly interception. London tried to get tricky on their ensuing drive with a flea flicker, but they were unable to execute, turning the ball over themselves on a fumble recovered by DB Teez Tabor at the 20-yard line. DB Tavante Beckett, the league's third leading tackler, forced his sixth fumble of the season on the play. The Thunder made London pay with a 15-yard touchdown strike from Garbers to WR Marquez Stevenson for the game's first points. RB Morgan Ellison picked up the one-point conversion to lead 7-0, diving across defenders and the goal line with an outstretched arm. Berlin extended their lead on the first play of the second quarter with a Garbers-to-Smith touchdown connection for 63 yards, 13-0. London tallied their first points of the game with a 46-yard Andre Szmyt field goal at 11:41 pulling within, 13-3. The Crusaders were looking for more before halftime, but DL Caeveon Patton sacked QB AJ McCarron to force a punt. A field goal was all Berlin's defense allowed in the first half, taking a 13-3 lead into the break.

After a defensive stop, RB Anthony McFarland extended Berlin's lead on their first play of the second half with a 69-yard touchdown run untouched up the middle. The two-point attempt was unsuccessful, but the Thunder led 19-3. The Crusaders then responded with 12 unanswered points in the span of 13 seconds. After a McCarron touchdown pass to TE Jake Sutherland, the defense of London found the endzone with a LB Pita Taumoepenu 10-yard fumble return for a score on the Thunder's first play of their ensuing drive. Berlin was able to add a field goal with a 31-yard K Ryan Santoso boot, but their defense went right back to work with a DL Wyatt Ray sack to force a London punt early in the fourth quarter. With 1:56 left in the game, Santoso knocked in a 45-yard field goal which put the game away.

XFL Semi-Final: Panthers Fall 31-18 to Stampede in Western Conference Championship

August 10, 2024

Oklahoma City, OK - A season full of promise and adversity for the Detroit Panthers ended as the team fell 31-18 to the Oklahoma City Stampede in the Western Conference Championship. It was Detroit's third loss to Birmingham this season. Detroit scored the game's first points and led 12-0 after the first quarter, but the Stampede finished the game strong with 28 unanswered points. The Panthers offense was 5-for-5 on their drives to open the game, scoring one touchdown and four K Jake Bates field goals in the first half. However, Oklahoma City climbed back. After a wild third quarter which featured six combined turnovers (four interceptions and two fumbles), the game entered the fourth quarter tied 18-18. Oklahoma City took their first lead of the game at 13:42 in the fourth quarter and did not look back. QB Matt Corral, who entered during the third quarter for Oklahoma City in place of QB Adrian Martinez, threw a seven-yard touchdown pass to WR Amari Rodgers. That was all the Stampede needed to steal the victory away and advance to their third straight spring league championship game.

Detroit opened on offense and hit paydirt just five plays into the game with a 35-yard touchdown pass from QB Danny Etling to WR Siaosi Mariner. The Panthers led 6-0 after failing to convert their one-point attempt. The Panthers defense made a big play of their own not long after, stopping the Stampede from converting a 4th-and-1 on Oklahoma City's 42-yard line. LB Noah Dawkins stopped RB Ricky Person for no gain. Detroit took advantage of plus territory, extending their lead with a 53-yard Bates field goal with 9:19 left in the first quarter. Etling and Mariner hooked up again for 16 yards on 3rd-and-13 late in the first quarter. An unnecessary roughness penalty on Oklahoma City, a defenseless hit on Mariner, tacked on extra yards to push Detroit deeper into Stampede territory. Bates finished the drive with another field goal, this time from 42 yards out, to give the Panthers a 12-0 lead heading into the second quarter, their biggest lead against Oklahoma City this season. It was also the first time this season Detroit held Oklahoma City scoreless through the first 15 minutes. Oklahoma City's offense started to find success in the second quarter, as Martinez connected with TE Jace Sternberger for a gain of 38. Later in the drive on third-and-goal, DB Keith Gipson broke up a jump ball to TE Jordan Thomas to keep the Stampede out of the endzone. Despite 75 passing yards from Martinez on the drive, Detroit held Oklahoma City to a 23-yard K Chris Blewitt field goal. Detroit's offense did not skip a beat, running their way into Stampede territory with a 25-yard RB Nate McCrary rumble. The Panthers had to settle for another field goal, a 39-yard boot from Bates for his third make of the game to keep their 12-point lead. Dawkins continued his dominant performance with a sack fumble on Martinez, which DL RonDell Carter recovered on the 15-yard line. The Stampede still found a way to keep Detroit out of the endzone, as Bates kicked his fourth field goal of the game to lead 18-3. Oklahoma City started their ensuing drive on the 50 after a Bates kickoff out of bounds and Martinez made the Panthers pay with a 50-yard touchdown pass to Thomas on the first play of the drive. The two-point attempt was unsuccessful, but the touchdown gave the Stampede some momentum. With 1:56 before halftime, Bates attempted his fifth field goal of the first half, but he pulled the 51-attempt wide left. The Stampede took advantage of the miss with a make of their own from 43 yards, making it nine unanswered points heading into the break, but Detroit still led 18-12.

After a nice kickoff return, Birmingham's offense took over at Detroit's 43-yard line to open the third quarter. Martinez took a deep shot on their first play, but DB Adonis Alexander met the ball at the apex for an interception and came down at the one-yard line. Facing fourth down, Detroit pulled out a successful fake punt when DB Kai Nacua completed an 18-yard pass to DB Kendrick Whitehead. On the very next play, however, Etling was stripped and sacked and Oklahoma City recovered the loose ball for their first takeaway of the game. The Panthers defense took the ball right back two plays later with a DL Walter Palmore forced fumble on Martinez, which was recovered by LB Mike Tafua at Detroit's 45-yard line. Etling could not do anything with the gift, punting the ball away to the Stampede after three plays. Oklahoma City and Detroit continued to go back and forth with turnovers with three interceptions in five plays. Etling's second interception of the sequence resulted in a 48-yard game-tying pick six by DB Daniel Isom. It was the sixth turnover of the quarter between both teams. The one-point conversion was unsuccessful, making it an even 18-18 heading into the fourth quarter. Corral threw a 43-yard pass to WR Gary Jennings to start the fourth quarter. He finished the drive with a seven-yard touchdown pass to Rodgers for Oklahoma City's first lead of the game. The one-point conversion was unsuccessful, but they led 24-18. Detroit tried to get something to go their way, but Oklahoma City kept their momentum with a blocked field goal on Bates on a 44-yard attempt. The Panthers were unable to get on the board in the second half, falling to the Stampede again.

"The past three seasons have seen year-over-year growth in attendance and gameday revenue. Our owners are more committed and stronger than ever before, and the business community has recognized this success in our game. This wave of support has triggered our growth sharing model, signaling a bright future ahead, and we couldn't be more excited."

The amount represents an increase of $412,365 over the $5,650,000 that was negotiated with the CFL Players' Association in the 2022 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). The 2024 salary cap was $5,525,000.

"We are very pleased with our overall financial results for 2024," said President & CEO Wade Miller. Whisenhunt Focused on Winning, Building Connection with Salt Lake

September 28, 2024

Salt Lake City, UT - New Salt Lake City Showboats HC Ken Whisenhunt isn't oblivious to the elephant in the room. He understands the situation he has inherited. Whisenhunt's new team struggled to last season despite a late surge in 2023. But Showboats fans have reason for optimism, according to the new head coach. "I feel very good about where this franchise is and what the goals are of this franchise after being here for just a couple days," Whisenhunt said. "They haven't been very successful the last couple years and that's something we're dedicated to change. We're going to work our tails off to get these guys prepared and we want to bring a great product to Salt Lake City. I'm certainly aware of the past and what's gone on in this area. But I also know if it can be a very strong area for a team if you generate excitement and play good football."

"When you get people to be a part of your family, when they have a number of years in their background as a player and coach at multiple positions and multiple levels, that knowledge that he's going to be able to share with our players is something that is hard to replicate," said Daryl Johnston, UFL Executive Vice President for Football Operations said. "I look at the opportunity to have Ken Whisenhunt be a part of the UFL family, it continues to validate what we're building with the UFL when you get somebody the caliber of Ken Whisenhunt reaching out and asking if there is an opportunity with that Salt Lake job."

Gradkowski Leaves London for World League's Zurich Mercenaries

October 17, 2024

London, ENGLAND - The London Crusaders of the United Football League announced that Offensive Coordinator Bruce Gradkowski has left the team for the Zurich Mercenaries of the NFL's World League. Gradkowski spent the past two seasons with the Crusaders, helping guide the team to a conference-best 457 points scored in 2024 and the second-highest scoring offense (25.4 ppg) overall during his tenure. "My congratulations to Bruce, he did a phenomenal job for our football team and has been an integral part of my success as a head coach," said Head Coach Anthony Becht. "As a former teammate and working alongside him these past two seasons, I've had an up-close look at his ability and work ethic. Bruce absolutely deserves this opportunity and he is going to do great things in Zurich."

Becht announced the following changes to his coaching staff: Phil McGeoghan has been promoted to Offensive Coordinator and will also continue his role as Wide Receivers Coach and joining the Crusaders will be Seneca Wallace, who will serve as the Quarterbacks Coach. "Phil did a great job with the wide receivers last year and has a deep understanding of our offense, which will allow him to collaborate with Kyle (Caskey), Marc (Columbo), and myself while also providing continuity for our players," said Becht. "Seneca is somebody I spoke with several years ago and excited we are able to finally add him to the staff. As someone who was a dual-threat quarterback at the highest level, he will be a huge asset not just for our quarterbacks, but the entire offense."

London Crusaders Release QB AJ McCarron

November 9, 2024

London, ENGLAND - The London Crusaders have released QB AJ McCarron. The United Football League team announced the decision saying they have decided to "move forward" with looking for a new quarterback.

"The UFL continues to be a league of opportunity and we have come to the decision to move forward looking at new opportunities at the quarterback position. AJ McCarron has been a tremendous part of the success of our team the last two seasons and we are grateful for all of his contributions. It's with respect for AJ that we wanted to provide him a clear path forward as he decides what is next in his football future," Crusaders Head Coach Anthony Becht said in a statement.

"I wanna come back with a vengeance and I wanna face them twice. I wanna go to somebody that faces them twice a year, and put it on them. We'll see if there ends up being a fit and ends up working out, but I just felt like it wasn't done the right way and that's part of the business. I just felt like I was due a little more respect with how it went down than what I was shown, but it's a part of business. Can't cry about it and I don't want to be in my feelings," said McCarron.

United Football League Launches Expansion Process for New Team Markets

November 25, 2024

Arlington, TX - The United Football League announced it has officially launched its first expansion process. The UFL is accepting proposals from prospective markets looking to bring spring football to their communities and be a part of the growth of the sport. In its search to identify the strongest markets to support its ambitious growth goals, the UFL is looking at several core attributes when selecting its new cities, including fan interest and existing sports culture, geography and population and venue and infrastructure availability. "As the UFL lays the groundwork for future growth, we're excited to begin exploring new markets for expansion, where spring football can not only live, but thrive," said UFL President and CEO Russ Brandon. "These expansion efforts validate our vision and early success, demonstrating how spring football resonates with fans and reinforcing our commitment to broadening its reach. With the strength and structure of our ownership group, along with our media partners, we are well-positioned for the long haul and look forward to identifying communities that have the potential, and desire, to host a UFL team."

United Football League Partners with NFL's World League

December 2, 2024

Paris, FRANCE - In an exciting development for football fans on both sides of the Atlantic, the United Football League (UFL) and the NFL's World League (WLAF) have announced a partnership aimed at coordinating their schedules. This collaboration is designed to maximize viewership and fan engagement by ensuring that games from both leagues are strategically timed to avoid conflicts and provide a seamless football experience. The WLAF, which has been rapidly growing its fanbase across Europe, see this partnership as a win-win for both leagues. By aligning their schedules, they aim to create a more cohesive and accessible football calendar for fans who follow both leagues.

UFL President Russ Brandon commented on the partnership, saying, "This is a significant step forward for both the UFL and WLAF. By working together on scheduling, we can ensure that our fans have the best possible experience and can enjoy more games without having to choose between them. It's an exciting time for football, and we're thrilled to be partnering with WLAF to bring even more excitement to our audiences."

WLAF President Patrick Esume echoed these sentiments, adding, "Our partnership with the UFL is a testament to the growing popularity of American football in Europe. By coordinating our schedules, we can provide a more comprehensive and enjoyable experience for our fans, while also promoting the sport on a global scale."

This partnership is expected to lead to more synchronized game times, special events, and interleague matchups, further solidifying the bond between the UFL and WLAF and enhancing the global appeal of American football.

World League Announces 2025 Team Participants

December 15, 2024

Berlin, GERMANY - The World League revealed a lineup of 15 teams that will compete in the UFL-WLAF merged league for 2025. The announcement includes the Tirol Raiders moving to Oslo, Norway, the Naucalpan Raptors and Saltillo Dinos merging into Saltillo Raptors and the Barcelona Dragons renaming to the Barcelona Almirantes, further diversifying the league and increasing its reach across the continent.

The WLAF's commitment to expanding the sport of American football in Europe is evident in this bold move. By joining the UFL, the league aims to attract a broader audience, provide more opportunities for players, and enhance the overall experience for fans. The 2025 season promises to be one of the most exciting yet, with new rivalries forming and established teams looking to defend their dominance.

With 15 teams currently set to compete; Hamburg Sea Devils, Frankfurt Galaxy, Cologne Centurions, Madrid Bravos, Barcelona Almirantes, Zurich Mercenaries, Oslo Raiders, Vienna Vikings, Milan Pirates, Fehérvár Enthroners, Berlin Thunder, Warsaw Eagles, Prague Lions, Tarahumara Rebelion and Saltillo Raptors, the 2025 season is sure to deliver unforgettable moments and showcase the best of European American football.

The Rhein Fire not being included is quite perplexing but expect the 16th and final team to be announced within the next month.

Copenhagen Becomes Final Location for World League

December 21, 2024

Copenhagen, DENMARK - On the eve of the eagerly anticipated Championship Game 2024 at the VELTINS-Arena in Gelsenkirchen between the Vienna Vikings and defending champions Rhein Fire, the WLAF officials had big news to announce. As part of the "WLAF Honors", Managing Director Zeljko Karajica and Commissioner Patrick Esume announced the Danish capital Copenhagen as the new home of the continental league: Copenhagen Storm will be the 16th and final team to compete in the 2025 season. "It was always our wish and a major goal to include a franchise from Scandinavia. The talks took place over a long period of time and were very cooperative and trusting. It's great that it has now worked out, because entering the Northern European market is an important step in the further development of our game in every respect," says WLAF boss Zeljko Karajica.

The Copenhagen Storm ownership group has been working hard behind the scenes in recent months to build a powerful organization. Palle Navntoft Christensen, who spent a total of ten years as a board member of the Danish American Football Association (DAFF), the Aarhus Tigers and series champion Copenhagen Towers, has been appointed General Manager. The team will play its home games at Gladsaxe Stadium in the Danish metropolis. "Our aim is to bring together the most talented Nordic players currently playing on WLAF teams or in national leagues across Europe. We also have experienced European and American players. We want to form the best American football team that has ever existed in the Nordic countries. We want to be a regular playoff contender by 2030. We are not just a new team, this is a new chapter for American football in the Nordic countries," says Michael Planeta, the chairman of Copenhagen Storm.

The Copenhagen Storm was founded by a group of Danish businessmen who share an ardent passion and a personal connection to the sport. Some of them have played actively, others have worked in management positions for teams in the Danish football league. Now they are pooling their experience and expertise to launch the first Scandinavian franchise in the WLAF. “The Nordic countries are traditionally known for producing strong players. The ownership group has high ambitions and is keen to put together a team that can play a good role in this league straight away. I have every confidence in them. Together they have the dream of making football even bigger in Scandinavia and igniting people's enthusiasm for the Copenhagen Storm,” says league commissioner Patrick Esume.

UFL 2024 World League American Draft

January 20, 2025

Berlin, GERMANY - The World League held an American draft for the first time for the athletes who are not currently signed to the United Football League (UFL) or the National Football League (NFL). This move aims to tap into the vast pool of talented American football players who are seeking opportunities to showcase their skills on an international stage.

The draft consisted of four rounds, providing these athletes with a unique chance to join one of the WLAF's expanding roster of teams. This structure offers them a platform to compete at a high level and gain exposure in the European market. Former Jacksonville Jaguars WR Keelan Cole went first overall to the Zurich Mercenaries followed by QBs Reid Sinnett and Ben Holmes going to the Madrid Bravos and Vienna Vikings.

Other notable selections included Zurich also selecting WR Aaron Jackson, Madrid also selecting WR Aron Cruickshank, Oslo selecting QB NKosi Perry, Fehérvár selecting QB Brock Domann and DL Emmit Gooden, Cologne selecting QB Jeremy Moussa, Barcelona selecting QB Micah Leon, WR Terryon Robinson, DL Kyle Kitchens and DB Nazir Streater, Hamburg selecting WR Jeff Cotton, QB David Blough and TE Roberto Miranda, Milan selecting QB Zach Edwards, Prague selecting WR Willie Patterson and DBs Ken Hike and Jalen Embry, Vienna also selecting WR Reece Horn and DB Divine Buckrham, Frankfurt selecting QB Matthew McKay, WR Terry Wright and DB Shyheim Battle, Warsaw selecting QB Demarcus Irons and WR Darrell Stewart, Copenhagen selecting TE Jonathan Steinhauer, QB Jadrian Clark, RB Glen Toonga, DB Exavier Edwards and Saltillo selecting QB Trevone Boykin

"We have a good idea of the players that the NFL will be sending us next month, but we have to build this team as if those players aren't coming," said Oslo Raiders Head Coach Jim Herrmann. "These American players will make up the core of our team along with our 10-15 National players."

World League Expands Homegrown Territories

January 29, 2025

Berlin, GERMANY - Last year, several teams in the World League of American Football (WLAF) already took advantage of the opportunity to sign players from neighboring countries as "homegrowns". The Warsaw Eagles were able to recruit from Ukraine and the Baltic countries(Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia), the Prague Lions signed talents from Slovakia, and the Fehérvár Enthroners were able to bring in players from Romania. Homegrowns are defined as players who began playing football in their respective countries. These players fall under the "Homegrown Salary Cap" of the corresponding franchise. The expansion of Homegrown territories aims to further enhance competitive balance within the league and create new opportunities for players across Europe.

This season, the regulation is being expanded to include additional regions. The Copenhagen Storm, based in Denmark, and the Oslo Raiders, based in Norway, can now sign players from Sweden and Finland as homegrowns, while the Fehérvár Enthroners can additionally include players from Serbia as homegrowns. This expansion enables franchises to nurture and integrate even more young talents from across Europe.

A notable new provision concerns the allocation of French and United Kingdom players. Football talents who began their careers in France or the United Kingdom can now be signed as Homegrowns by the Spain franchises (Barcelona Almirantes and Madrid Bravos) due to the London Crusaders and Paris Musketeers being UFL franchises and not under the same roster ratio requirements as the World League teams. This regulation strengthens the WLAF's presence in France and the United Kingdom and offers talented players the opportunity to develop at the highest level.

Patrick Esume, WLAF Commissioner, emphasizes the significance of this update: "It is a top priority for us to develop new homegrown heroes in previously untapped territories. We are aware of the potential in countries such as Serbia and the Baltic states, and we want to provide these players with a platform to showcase their abilities. Particularly in France and the United Kingdom, it is important for us to maintain a strong presence and offer talents the opportunity to compete at the highest level. With the new regulations, players from that area can now more easily join the franchises that best suit them and demonstrate their skills."

It is very exciting to have Trey Lance, Bailey Zappe, Desmond Ridder and others playing in our league. They are part of an excellent group of quarterbacks who the fans in Europe are going to have a lot of fun watching but the quarterbacks are just part of the story. The UFL has proved a great training ground for players in all positions and that is why the quality of our players continues to grow each year. Now with the partnership of the National Football League in Europe, we expect that quality to grow exponentially."

"It is an exciting time for the NFL globally, with a record eight games in Europe this season, and interest in our game continuing to grow around the world," said Michelle Webb, Vice President International Sponsorship at the NFL. "Our new partnership with the UFL demonstrates our commitment to engaging fans in unique ways across the continent, and we look forward to working with them to grow and celebrate fandom in Germany and the rest of Europe this season and beyond."

"Symbol of our roots" - Frankfurt Galaxy Switch Team Colors

February 17, 2025

Frankfurt, GERMANY - After a disappointing WLAF 2024 season, Frankfurt Galaxy wants to regain its former strength. The motto for the upcoming season is “Galaxy Reloaded”. To represent this, the team chose a special approach. In the future, the Galaxy's visual identity and logo will feature the color orange. This is not a debut, but rather a return. Orange, which stood for energy, momentum and passion, already appeared in the Galaxy's visual identity during their successful times in NFL Europe. “This return is more than just a visual rebrand - it's a bold statement of legacy, local pride, and the continued evolution of one of Europe's most storied football franchises,” a statement from the franchise says. The new or better say old color will be seen in the jerseys, merchandise and on the digital platforms of Frankfurt Galaxy.

When the team joined the European League of Football in 2021, the orange disappeared from their visual identity. Frankfurt Galaxy wanted to be modernized.
Now the change. The decision to go back to the classic Orange was based on fans requests and is both an emotional and strategic move. “We want to bring our history back to life while channeling the spirit of NFL Europe into the present day,” says Eric Reutemann, CEO of Frankfurt Galaxy about the reasons for the comeback. He adds: “Orange is a symbol of our roots - and of our determination to set the standard in this league today.”

UFL Inches Toward a Potential Player Strike

February 27, 2025

Arlington, TX - The UFL is experiencing growing pains. In the form of labor pains. Ben Fischer of Sports Business Journal reports that the spring league’s 108 quarterbacks skipped a recent camp in advance of the launch of training camp on Monday, March 3.

As two sides negotiate, the players’ union contends the most recent proposal, entails only a “negligible” increase in last year’s base salary of $110,000.

The next day, the quarterbacks sent a letter to UFL President Russ Brandon and executive Vice President Daryl Johnston. It says, in part: “The proposal our Players Association received was unacceptable and insulting. We, all of the quarterbacks in the UFL, have collectively decided not to attend the UFL quarterback training camp this weekend in Arlington, Texas, in protest of that proposal and the message that is sent to us as players.”

“The United Football League continues to negotiate in good faith with the players union to finalize a collective bargaining agreement, which will be beneficial both to the players and the league,” the league said. The players seek a higher salary and year-round health insurance. Until there’s a deal, the players could strike. That would obviously jeopardize the opening of the season, on March 28. Playing it out, the UFL could hire replacement players. Which would diminish the quality of the product, but would result in games being played as scheduled.

NFLPA Issues Statement of Support for UFL Players

March 7, 2025

Arlington, TX - As the UFL’s players continue to prepare for the 2025 season without a new labor deal, the NFL Players Association has posted a statement of support for their spring-league brethren. “We are proud to stand in solidarity with the players of the UFL as they fight for a contract ahead of the UFL season,” the NFLPA said. “It’s time for Fox Sports and the other UFL owners to show their players respect and give them the fair wages and healthcare coverage that they deserve.”

It sounds good. The problem is that not nearly enough UFL players are committed to the cause. The younger players aren’t on board with the effort to use PR or threatened work stoppages to get a better deal. For the younger players, playing in the UFL is a means to a bigger end. The payday comes if/when they earn a shot to earn a job in the NFL. They’re willing to take whatever they get in the spring if it means having a crack at a job in the fall.

Quentin Dormady: UFL release over union activities amid CBA talks

March 10, 2025

Arlington, TX - A prominent UFL player believes he was released last weekend largely because of his participation in union activities as negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement remain stalled. "I think that was the driving factor," former Salt Lake City Showboats QB Quentin Dormady said. In response, a UFL spokesman released this statement Tuesday afternoon: " Our teams engage in various player transactions during training camp, including free agent signings, moving players to injured reserve, waivers and terminations. In fact, through eight days of camp, 24 players have been released. Any player transactions are purely the result of football decisions at the team level and have nothing to do with collective bargaining negotiations."

He started games last season for the Munich Ravens and was the primary quarterback for the Paris Musketeers in 2023. The Showboats acquired him via trade this winter. When he reported to training camp this month, Dormady took on an increasing leadership role this month in organizing players' response to the league's CBA proposal, which included discussions about the possibility of boycotting the league's media days last week.

In a face-to-face meeting March 9, Salt Lake GM Jim Monos informed him he would be released and Dormady said Monos told him the decision was not based on his practice performance but Monos did not provide an explanation. "They trade for me to come in and compete to be the starter," Dormady said. "And then I get five practices to show that basically I'm not good enough to be on their team? It just seemed fishy. I've been very open about trying to help lead the negotiations here to get us to where we can get to a place to finish this and come to a resolution. But when we're at a standstill because the league refuses to even meet us a third of the way, then there's no good faith here. So I think that this was a deal where it's like, let's chop a head off and make this another way that they can threaten people."

He also believes he was an easy target given an unusual incident during the 2023 XFL season, when he was released and then reinstated amid allegations that he had leaked offensive plays to members of opposing teams. A league investigation ruled that accusations of impropriety were unsubstantiated. Dormady, however, said he was fined $5,000. He told ESPN this week that his playing career is likely over but that he wants to continue supporting current UFL players' bid for a CBA. "They keep messing with the wrong guy," Dormady said. "I'm not backing down, man. This goes far beyond playing football at this point. What it's always been about is, 'Let's just do what's right.' We're not trying to sink anyone or the league or anything. We understand what the league's done for us, but at the same time, they just continue to show who they are, and it ain't about the players."

Reggie Barlow Steps Down to Become Head Coach at Tennessee State University

March 22, 2025

Washington, DC - The United Football League announced that Washington Defenders Offensive Coordinator Reggie Barlow has stepped down to become the new head football coach at Tennessee State University. QBs Coach Shannon Harris was named as interim Offensive Coordinator for the 2025 UFL season. Harris served as the Defenders quarterbacks coach since the 2023 season. Prior to the Defenders, he was the offensive coordinator at Virginia State University beginning in 2021.

"The UFL would like to thank Reggie Barlow for his tremendous contributions to the Defenders since 2023," said UFL CEO Russ Brandon. "We wish Reggie the best of luck in his new duties as head coach at Tennessee State and know that the Defenders are in great hands with Shannon Harris at the helm. On a personal level, it has been a privilege to work with Reggie over the past three years. He is obviously a tremendous coach, but he's an even better person."

"Coach Harris has the respect of the coaches and players throughout the entire UFL, as well as every coach that he worked with for two decades at the collegiate level," said Johnston. "When Coach Barlow informed us that he was becoming head coach at Tennessee State, we knew that Coach Harris would be the right person to step in."

Showboats Coach Ken Whisenhunt Takes Leave of Absence

March 24, 2025

Salt Lake City, UT - Former NFL head coach Ken Whisenhunt has taken a leave of absence, less than a week before the start of the 2025 UFL season. The league announced that Whisenhunt is stepping aside for personal reasons and Offensive line coach Jim Turner becomes the interim coach of the Showboats.

“The impact that Ken has made on the culture of the Memphis Showboats in his brief time as head coach has been very impressive and we were excited to see the team perform in Week 1,” UFL CEO Russ Brandon said in a statement. “We take pride in the UFL being a family first league and we respect Ken’s decision to take a leave of absence for personal reasons at this time. We are fortunate to have Jim Turner in place to fill in as interim head coach and we are excited for his opportunity to lead the Showboats into the opening week. If and when Ken Whisenhunt is ready to return to the UFL family, we will welcome him with open arms.”

UFL Week 1: Manny Wilkins, Crusaders Crush Roughnecks in UFL Opener

March 28, 2025

Houston, TX - The London Crusaders entered the 2025 UFL season with questions about how they would replace AJ McCarron at quarterback. They answered them resoundingly Friday in a 31-6 blowout of the Houston Roughnecks. Crusaders HC Anthony Becht tapped QB Manny Wilkins to be the successor to McCarron. The 29-year-old answered the call in an efficient and explosive performance. Wilkins was accurate throughout the evening, completing 17 of 22 passes for 189 yards for the Crusaders. However, his larger impact came on the ground, where racked up 43 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries. Becht was vocal about his hope that his 2025 quarterbacks would provide the team with more dynamic scrambling than McCarron. Wilkins did just that and helped diversify London's red-zone offense with his read-option skill set.

Wilkins was just one cog in London's dominant running game. Top RB Jacob Saylors totaled 98 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries while backup RB Jarveon Howard went for 115 yards on 13 carries, most of which came on a 74-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. As for Houston, it'll be going back to the drawing board after a Week 1 shellacking. The first big decision HC CJ Johnson's team will have to make: who will start at quarterback? Backup QB Nolan Henderson was much more effective than starting QB Anthony Brown, so the Roughnecks may consider changing up their signal-caller depth chart entering Week 2.

UFL Week 1: Dallas Defeats Munich 33-9

March 29, 2025

Dallas, TX - The Dallas Renegades opened their 2025 campaign with a 33-9 win over the Munich Ravens at Choctaw Stadium. The Renegade defense held the Ravens scoreless after three plays during the game-opening series. Dallas picked up 24 yards before the team successfully navigated a fourth-down conversion. Two false starts would plague the team on the way to the red zone before a six-yard pass caught by WR Isaiah Winstead appeared to cross the end zone. The touchdown would be overturned with the ball on the one-yard line. One play later, RB DeVeon Smith earned the Renegades' first touchdown. Dallas went up 8-0 as a two-point conversion pass from QB Luis Perez was caught by TE Sal Cannella. On the first play of the second quarter, Perez was intercepted which later led to the Ravens kicking a field goal after eight plays and 48 yards. Dallas responded as a 77-yard run from RB Kalen Ballage and a two-point conversion pass to WR Deontay Burnett put the Renegades up 16-3 at the half.

During the third quarter, the home team would extend its lead to 24-3 as the Renegades went on an 11-play, 56-yard scoring drive that ended with Smith recording his second one-yard rushing touchdown of the day. The team would go 3-for-4 in two-point conversions as another throw from QB Perez would land in the hands of WR Burnett. A pass interference call on Dallas placed Munich in scoring position before an offensive foul and an unsuccessful field-goal attempt kept the Ravens scoreless to end the third quarter. QB Perez's 11-yard throw to WR Burnett, the receiver's second receiving catch of the night, placed the Renegades three yards away from the end zone as a 2-yard rush from RB Ballage followed. A one-yard TD rush from Smith concluded the Renegades' 9-play, 59-yard scoring drive. Dallas would be stopped a few yards short during its two-point conversion to lead 30-3 in the fourth quarter. With less than five minutes left in the game, the Ravens scored their first points in the second half on a fourth-down conversion. Their three-point conversion attempt would be unsuccessful. Using this season's new rules, Munich elected to keep possession of the ball, starting at its 28-yard-line at 4th and 12. The Ravens couldn't convert as an unsuccessful pass gave the ball back to the Renegades. A field goal from Dallas with 24 seconds left was the final point of the game.

-- (0-0)Ravens 9 - 33 Renegades(0-0)

UFL Week 1: Late Pick Six Thwarts Showboats Comeback Attempt

March 30, 2025

Salt Lake City, UT - A Detroit Panthers Pick Six thwarted the Salt Lake City Showboats' spirited comeback attempt at SImmons Bank Liberty Stadium as the Panthers defeated the Showboats 26-12. Detroit led 20-6 midway through the fourth quarter. But the Showboats put together a 14-play, 70-yard drive that spanned nearly six minutes to pull within one score, 20-12. QB EJ Perry threw a 6-yard bullet to WR Jonathan Adams for the Showboats' first touchdown of the season. Salt Lake City used the UFL's alternate possession rule, attempting a 4th-and-12 from their own 28 to retain possession. An incompletion left Detroit with the ball at the Salt Lake 28 and with 1:47 left. The Showboats pushed the Panthers back four yards and forced a 50-yard field goal that would likely have iced the game. But Detroit K BT Potter missed and gave the Showboats life with 51 seconds remaining.

On the first play of the ensuing possession, Williams found Adams for 38 yards over the middle. The longest play of the game put the Showboats into scoring position with a chance to tie or win the game. But Williams was pressured by DL RonDell Carter on the next play. As Williams looked to get the ball to the sideline, Nacua stepped in front of the aerial and raced the other direction for the game-sealing touchdown. The Showboats played both active quarterbacks - Perry and Williams. Williams was 8-of-11 for 104 yards and the costly interception in the final minute. Perry was 10-of-17 for 93 yards, 1 touchdown and 1 interception. Adams led all receivers in the game with 6 catches and 93 yards. LB Steele Chambers paced the Salt Lake defense, racking up 10 tackles. LB Zeke Vandenburgh added 9 total stops and 1 tackle for-loss. DL Jaylon Allen recorded the Showboats' only sack of the day. Detroit jumped out to a 10-0 lead early in the second quarter, scoring on its first two offensive possessions, including a run from QB Bryce Perkins to score on 4th-and-goal from the 2 where he overcame a bad snap, and broke at least three tackles to get the ball across the goal line. Salt Lake responded with a Matt Coghlin 50-yard field goal to make it 10-3 at halftime. The Showboats pulled within four midway through the third quarter on another Coghlin field goal, this time from 45 yards. The Panthers padded the lead to 17-6 on a Perkins-to-Samson Nacua touchdown pass late in the third. A Potter 43-yard field goal with 7:52 remaining in the game made it 20-6 and set up the late drama.

Washington, DC - Behind eight sacks and four field goals from K Matt McCrane, the Washington Defenders outlasted the 2024 UFL Champion Oklahoma City Stampede for a 18-11 victory in front of 22,254 fans at Audi Field. McCrane supplied six points for the Defenders with a pair of field goals in the first quarter. The Stampede created some separation with four minutes left in the first quarter with a seven play, 55-yard drive resulting in a 12-yard touchdown reception from RB CJ Marable for a 9-6 lead. Oklahoma City converted on the two-point conversion with a score from WR Marlon Williams to push the lead to 11-6. With less than two minutes left in the second quarter, the Defenders finished the first half strong with an eight-play, 63-yard drive to gain a 12-11 advantage heading into halftime. After a 35-yard catch by WR Jaydon Mickens, the Defenders punched it in the endzone with a four-yard catch from WR Chris Rowland.

Washington's pass rush was in full effect entering the second half. In Oklahoma City's first drive of the third quarter, QB Alex McGough suffered a pair of sacks from Kyle Phillips and Bryce Thompson to halt their momentum. Washington's defense continued to apply pressure in the third quarter. With six minutes left in the quarter, DL Derick Roberson took down McGough for a 10-yard loss on the first play. The Defenders capitalized on that momentum when DB Deandre Baker picked off McGough for his first interception of the season. The Defenders opened the fourth quarter by grinding out a 17 play, 75-yard drive that was capped off by McCrane's third field goal of the game, a 21-yarder, for a 15-11 lead. WR Javon Antonio caught two balls for 32 yards throughout the drive. McCrane continued his busy day by nailing a 53-yard field goal that was the end result of a nine play, 40-yard drive with 5:35 left in the game. With less than two minutes left in the game, Oklahoma City attempted one final comeback but their plans were foiled when Roberson and DL Andre Mintze each recorded a sack to seal the 18-11 win.

Announcement of new Football League with teams from the United States, Canada and Mexico

April 1, 2025

Guadalajara, MEXICO - The International Football Alliance (IFA) was officially presented as a new football league that expects to have teams in the United States, Canada and Mexico starting in 2025, and will begin with nine franchises with the hope of growing year by year, and having its first All-Star game at the Azteca Stadium, which has hosted NFL games on multiple occasions.

Juan Manuel Bladé Cavazos, who was presented as the commissioner of the IFA, announced the plans that include three teams based in the US, three in Canada and three more in different locations in Mexico, including the renowned Cancun, a tourist site par excellence. "We plan to start in June of this year and the idea is to start with nine teams. We have three teams ready to go from America and we will have three teams in Canada, one of them in Chihuahua, one of them in Guadalajara and one of them in Cancun," Bladé said.

"The idea of this is to create a new league that is international, that is a true union between the North American countries in terms of football. The idea is to participate with nine teams, to go step by step, not to start running, with firm steps so that this is something that will last," said Bladé Cavazos, who is currently the president of the National Organization of Student American Football in Mexico (Onefa). "There will be 53 players and seven players on the practice squad. The only limitation we are going to have is that there can be a maximum of 20 players from the United States and the rest can be players of any nationality, that is the only limit we are having," commented the commissioner.

UFL Week 2: Panthers Downed by Stallions, 21-12

April 4, 2025

Detroit, MI - The Detroit Panthers came up just short against the Oklahoma City Stampede, falling 21-12 at Ford Field in their home opener despite facing a backup quarterback in Matt Corral who took over after an Alex McGough injury on the first play of the game. McGough went down awkwardly on a scramble on the first play of the game. Corral entered and led the Stallions to a 6-0 lead after the first half, propelled by two K Harrison Mevin field goals. Oklahoma City later took a 18-0 lead after three quarters. Detroit made things interesting early in the fourth quarter after a nine-yard touchdown pass from QB Bryce Perkins to WR Marcus Simms. After a roughing the passer penalty on the touchdown, Detroit converted the three-point conversion attempt from the two-yard line with a Perkins scramble to cut Oklahoma City's lead in half. Needing to make a stop, DB DJ Miller came up big with an interception, his second of the night, on a Corral heave, keeping the door open for a Detroit comeback. Detroit's defense made another stop with under five minutes left, but they gave Oklahoma City a gift with a muffed punt turnover. The Stampede were able to add a field goal with 1:56 left to put the game just out of reach for the Panthers. K BT Potter nailed a 39-yard field goal with 26 seconds left, but the Panthers were stopped on the fourth-and-15 conversion attempt, sealing the win for Oklahoma City.

Miller recorded his first interception of the night in the second quarter, stepping in front of a Corral pass for the takeaway. That made two takeaways for Detroit's defense in as many weeks. It was also Miller's first interception in his professional career. After a Perkins interception to start the third quarter, the Stampede found the endzone with a RB Ricky Person one-yard rushing touchdown to put them up by 12. The Panthers defense turned away Oklahoma City on the two-point conversion attempt. Detroit's offense then put together their best drive of the night, starting from their own 27-yard line and getting all the way down to the one-yard line. On fourth-and-goal, the Panthers took a gamble, but the Stampede stuffed RB Nate McCrary for the turnover on downs, ending the promising 10-play, 58-yard drive that lasted nearly six minutes. On the first play of the fourth quarter, Corral took his shot and connected with WR Deon Cain for a 52-yard touchdown, capping off a solid night for the Oklahoma City understudy.

(OKC): QB Corral - 18/29 198 yards, 1 TD, 2 INTs, RB Person - 17 carries, 53 yards, 1 TD, WR Cain - 4 catches, 84 yards, 1 TD

UFL Week 2: Defenders Rally Late to Sink Showboats, 17-12

April 5, 2025

Washington, DC - Trailing 12-9 late in the fourth quarter, the Washington Defenders scored eight by way of a TE Ben Bresnahan touchdown reception and a passing score from WR Chris Rowland to seal a 17-12 win over the Salt Lake City Showboats at Audi Field. Washington's defensive unit picked up where they left off in week one when DB Kiondre Thomas picked off QB EJ Perry in Salt Lake first drive for 19 yards. Salt Lake opened the game's scoring with a 11 play, 65-yard drive that was capped off by a 23-yard field goal from K Matt Coghlin to take an early 3-0 lead with 1:04 left in the first quarter. QB Jordan Ta'amu led Washington's offense downfield with a 13-play, 55-yard drive that resulted with a 23-yard field goal from K Matt McCrane to tie the game at three with 5:20 left in the second quarter. Rowland accounted for the biggest play of the drive with a 17-yard reception on a third and seven to continue the drive. The Defenders were able to take the lead with less than a minute left in the half by way of a seven play, 29-yard drive capped off by a 30-yard field goal from McCrane to give DC a 6-3 lead into halftime.

McCrane continued to answer the call with a 46-yard field goal in Washington's opening drive of the second half to extend the lead to 9-6. A key 15-yard catch from RB Abram Smith on third and four highlighted the 10 play, 32-yard drive. The Showboats countered on the next drive with an eight play, 55-yard drive that was highlighted by a 39-yard catch from WR Jonathan Adams that put Salt Lake in the red zone at DC's 20-yard line. The Showboats ended the drive with a 33-yard field goal from Coghlin to cut the deficit to 9-6. After a missed 40-yard field goal from McCrane with less than a minute into the fourth quarter, the Showboats marched on for a six play, 70-yard drive powered by a 26-yard catch from Adams that put them in DC territory. On a first and ten from the 16-yard line, Perry scrambled out of the pocket and rushed it in for a 16-yard score to grab the 12-9 advantage. Salt Lake attempted a one-point conversion but could not execute. Washington countered on the following drive with a three-yard touchdown grab from TE Ben Bresnahan. The Defenders added some trickery on the two-point conversion when WR Chris Rowland tossed a touchdown pass to WR Cornell Powell in the endzone for a 17-12 lead. Rowland also accounted for the longest gain of the eight play, 76-yard drive on a 45-yard reception. With eight minutes left in the game, the Showboats trudged down the field and were in position to attempt a field goal to pull within two. DC's special teams unit stood tall with a blocked kick by DL Devonnsha Maxwell to seal the 17-12 victory.

UFL Week 2: Dallas Outpaces Houston 11-9

April 6, 2025

Dallas, TX - The Dallas Renegades survived a close game that came down to the final minute with an 11-9 decision over Houston at Choctaw Stadium. Dallas led the first quarter up 3-0 as K Lucas Havrisik converted a 27-yard field goal during the team's second series. With both offenses going back and forth, the Renegade defense held Houston scoreless in the first stanza. The Renegades' first series in the second quarter started with two consecutive first-down plays as QB Luis Perez connected with WR Isaiah Winstead. The team gathered 36 yards in the five plays but was unable to get points on the board. A late offensive push from the Roughnecks in the last minute of the first half landed the visiting team at the 23-yard line after a 23-yard throw and a 4-yard tackle. Houston would kick in a 41-yard field goal to end the first half tied 3-3.

During Dallas' first drive in the third quarter, a 29-yard pass from Perez to TE Sal Canella would mark the team's first third-down conversion in the quarter. During the same play, Canella took a big hit that ended with Houston recovering a forced fumble. Dallas DB Ajene Harris would avenge the Renegades in the next play, picking off a pass thrown by Houston. The home team would be held scoreless following the interception, only gaining 19 yards in four plays. In the final moments of the third quarter, the Renegades placed themselves in a good scoring position as a 21-yard pass to WR Winstead and a 17-yard pass to WR JaVonta Payton followed by two 6-yard rushes from RB Hunter kept the ball with Dallas at the start of the fourth quarter. The Renegades regained the lead 11-3 in the game's final quarter with a 15- yard play, 92-yard drive, which included play from the third quarter. Sitting in a third-and-4 situation, a 12-yard pass to WR Deontay Burnett successfully led to a first down to spark the offense. RB Hunter gained the team six more yards before WR Burnett caught his first touchdown of the 2025 season. Burnett then added two more points as he caught another pass in the end zone during Dallas' two-point conversion attempt. Houston came back in the game's final two minutes with a first down following a successful fourth-down conversion. The Roughnecks were able to score a touchdown but were stunted by the Renegade defense during a two-point conversion attempt. Electing to keep possession, Houston was shut down once again as Dallas regained possession to clinch the win.
