The United States Football League Returns in 2022

Los Angeles, CA - The United States Football League (USFL) announced that the league will officially return in the spring of 2022.

Initially launched in 1983, the USFL originally was an upstart spring football league consisting of 12 teams which featured some of the most exciting and recognizable young football stars in the country. When relaunched next year, the new USFL retains rights to key original team names. The league will target a minimum of eight teams and deliver high-quality, innovative professional football to fans throughout the spring season. "I'm extremely passionate about football and the opportunity to work with FOX Sports and to bring back the USFL in 2022 was an endeavor worth pursuing," said Brian Woods, co-founder of the new USFL and founder and CEO of The Spring League (TSL). "We look forward to providing players a new opportunity to compete in a professional football league and giving fans everywhere the best football viewing product possible during what is typically a period devoid of professional football."

FOX Sports will serve as the official broadcast partner for the USFL. FOX Sports also owns a minority equity stake in the company that owns the USFL. Trace Adkins to Perform Live at XFL Playoffs

Coaching Veteran Danielson joins XFL's International Player Development Staff

London, ENGLAND - Former London Monarchs and Berlin Thunder coach Dennis Danielson has joined the XFL as Manager of International Player and Football Development and will be responsible for the discovery and tutoring of home-grown prospects from around the world. Danielson, who boasts more than 30 years coaching experience at the high school, college and professional level in the United States and Europe, will work closely with XFL Director of International Player and Football Development Tony Allen.

"It's great to have the opportunity to work with football players in Europe again. I am keen to do what I can to help the XFL and the game of football in general outside of the United States. I am anxious to see the outstanding young talent from around Europe. The talent level has really grown over the last few years since I was last over here and knowledge of how to play the game has also risen," said Danielson. "I am excited and looking forward to the challenge."

"Dennis boasts a great football background and it's a big plus for us that he was available when we were recruiting for this position." said Allen. "I am confident he will do a tremendous job for us."

Danielson will hit the ground running in the coming months as testing dates for home-grown international player prospects in the United Kingdom, Germany, Mexico and Japan will be held before Christmas, as well as a week-long combine for the leading European players in November.

Pro Football Hall of Fame unveils new XFL exhibit ahead of Veterans Bowl at Benson Stadium

Canton, OH - The XFL is now part of history. Just 48 hours before kicking off the championship game, the Pro Football Hall of Fame opened a exhibit of the XFL as it prepares to conclude its 2021 season. Among the items from the current roster of the finalists are Brawlers PJ Walker’s jersey, Orlando's QB Garrett Gilbert’s towel and Breakers QB Colin Kaepernick’s game cleats. A Stars' play sheet, autographed by their former head coach Al Luginbill, also was displayed to the public. League officials, media partners and football fans all came together for the exhibit. Eric Shanks, the CEO and executive producer of Fox Sports, was part of the ribbon-cutting ceremony and was thrilled how the XFL games performed all season. “This league started because of the love for football and for anyone who plays the game, coaches the game, has anything to do with the game, this is where you want to end up,” Shanks said. “To be able to cut the ribbon on this exhibit here today is a proud moment for everybody at the XFL and it’s just the beginning of a new legacy of football in this country and also here in Canton.”

Hall of Fame President Jim Porter said the decision to open the XFL exhibit to the public was a collective effort from all parties. Porter looks forward to working with the XFL as it continues to grow its brand. “Everybody just came together and said boy, this is awesome to have their 2021 championship here and it’s a historic season and we tell the story of the historic seasons of professional football,“ Porter said. Porter mentioned how impressed he was with the viewership of the XFL games. “The television numbers were really impressive. America loves football. Having another season of it, how can that be bad,” Porter said. “We’re proud of what the XFL has done.”

The league expects to have at least 25,000 fans at Benson Stadium for the title game. XFL Commissioner Bill Polian believes the fans who are not too familiar with the league will feel nostalgic about the game. He also expects the fan base, especially in the Northeast Ohio area, to enjoy the quality of the game. Polian thinks the XFL showcases quality football players who have not taken the next step yet to the NFL. He added, "We’re going to put on a great show for them on Sunday.”

XFL and CFL will Not Merge

New York, NY - The XFL and CFL will no longer be pursuing a partnership in the short-term and both leagues agreed to move forward separately. “Our talks with the XFL, exploring the potential for collaboration and innovation, have been positive and constructive," CFL commissioner Randy Ambrosie. "While we remain open to finding new ways to work together in the future, we and our XFL counterparts have jointly decided to not pursue any formal arrangements at this time."

"While our discussions with the CFL did not ultimately lead to a collaboration, the effort reinforced our belief and commitment to further develop the XFL for international spring football," said XFL commissioner Bill Polian.

Toronto Argonauts could still Land in the XFL

Toronto, ONTARIO, CANADA - Lingering questions regarding the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts include the possibility that the Argonauts will join the XFL for the 2022 season. Maple Leafs Sports & Entertainment LLC owns the Argonauts, a team that has existed for 148 years. MLSE became the primary catalyst for the XFL conversations, as a way to rectify franchise operating losses of $12 million per year. A sale of the team could happen, too. Regardless, as the CFL prepares to return after a lost season due to the pandemic, it could be losing a team or teams to the XFL, in time.

European League of Football Launched

Hamburg, GERMANY - SEH Sports & Entertainment LLC has unveiled plans for the European League of Football (ELF) in a bid to capitalize on the growing popularity of the sport in Central Europe. The company, which was set up by Zeljko Karajica, the former managing director of German broadcaster ProSiebenSat.1, is looking to launch the new eight-team competition next June.

Franchises in the German cities of Berlin, Frankfurt, Hamburg and Stuttgart have so far been confirmed as well as Poland’s Wroclaw Panthers. A further team is set to be added. Following its inaugural 2022 season, SEH plans to expand the ELF by inviting teams from other nations, eventually leading to 20 teams competing from ten countries. Karajica has been named chief executive of the league. He will be joined by former football player and current coach Patrick Esume in running the competition.

“The ELF is managed by a professional franchise system and we are convinced that the time is right for a top European league,” said Karajica. “The interest in American football is growing from year to year, especially in Germany. We offer fans a highly attractive product during the NFL-free period. With the kick-off in April 2022, we will present the ELF as a brand in the media and offer the games to a wide audience on both analogue and digital channels. Playing by NFL rules gives us the opportunity to put a more exciting product onto the gridiron, but also opens up the possibility to look for a close alliance to the NFL in regards to player and referee development.”

CFL not Closing the Door on Resumption of XFL Partnership talks

Toronto, ONTARIO, CANADA - The focus remains on the 2021 season but CFL commissioner Randy Ambrosie hasn’t closed the door on partnership talks with the XFL. “We both decided and agreed that we would go back to our respective businesses and focus on our own leagues, for now,” Ambrosie said. “We haven’t set any plans to reconnect. But because the relationship was positive, the door was left open for the possibility that we talk again down the road. But today and for the foreseeable future, it’s all CFL all the time.”

Ambosie wouldn’t divulge what was discussed between the two leagues but said no stone was left unturned. “It would be disingenuous to suggest that we didn’t talk about everything,” he said. “Now, we’ve got our game, our league and our own future to navigate and I think that’s going to mean having conversations about how do we take our league to the next level? How do we grow the game? How do we double, then double again and double again our success? We’ll have an opportunity for consultation with our stakeholders, our fans, with amateur football, with university football because we don’t need to grow the CFL, we need to grow football in Canada. We need to make our game stronger.”

CFL Unlikely to Play in 2021

Ottawa, Ontario, Canada - The CFL, once again, will not be getting an interest-free loan from the Canadian government. The two sides have been talking since last August after the Canadian Football League closed the door to their 2020 season. According to CFL expert Rod Peterson, sources are telling him it is 60/40 that there WILL NOT be a CFL season in 2021. “There are some teams very low on cash, very. I wouldn’t put the Toronto Argonauts in that category, nor the Calgary Stampeders. But these community-owned teams have lost millions and millions. So what’s going on in the CFL right now? There are some teams that I have no idea how they’re keeping the lights on. I have no idea.”

Peterson believes the CFL are talking about a possible merger with the newly formed European League of Football if talks with the XFL continues to stall. The CFL and it's nine franchises; Montreal Alouettes, Toronto Argonauts, Edmonton Football Team, Ottawa RedBlacks, Calgary Stampeders, BC Lions, Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Hamilton Tiger-cats and Saskatchewan Roughriders remain in limbo. “Well, I’m hearing next year, but I don’t know how that’s possible, I would think 2023.”

NBC Sports and XFL Announce Extension to Television Partnership

August 18, 2002

Stamford, CT - NBC Sports and the XFL have mutually agreed to extend their landmark and profitable revenue sharing broadcast partnership through 2006. The announcement was made today by Ken Schanzer, NBC Sports President and XFL Co-founder Dick Ebersol. NBC and the XFL originally partnered in January 2000 with a groundbreaking agreement which, among other things, carries a negotiable payment model, renews at NBC's option and calls for NBC to share in revenues derived from the increasing value of XFL franchises. The original deal included a four-year option for NBC after the second season which both parties have mutually accepted. NBC will be carrying three games a week for the 2003 season for $8M as TNN's and UPN's coverage of the XFL was ending after the 2002 season, those networks were moving away from live sports.

"We love the XFL game and continue to believe in the long-term business prospects of the league," said Schanzer. "This deal works because it encourages us to continue to invest our management and broadcast time and creativity into building viewership. We knew growth would take time, but by being profitable, this partnership allows us time to work on attracting new fans to what we believe is a terrific product. We're encouraged that our XFL ratings are holding steady in year two at a time when just about everything other than NASCAR and the NFL seems to be declining somewhat. Not only is the XFL an incredibly fan-friendly league, but the League and its teams are also terrific partners. Oliver Luck's leadership and passion has the league poised for continued growth. Working with the XFL has been a real pleasure."

The Toronto Argonauts have Joined the XFL

August 20, 2021

Toronto, Ontario, Canada - To end the speculation of the last few weeks, Bill Manning and Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment LLC have announced that they were granted an XFL expansion franchise for the 2022 season. Bill Manning announced the team as the Toronto Jousters and that they would be led by former University of Georgia and University of Miami head coach Mark Richt. Former Toronto Argonauts Head Coach Ryan Dinwiddie would serve as the offensive coordinator while former Argonauts general manager Michael Clemons would also be joining the staff in the same capacity. Former University of Miami head coach Al Golden was named as the defensive coordinator. James Coley, Jarious Jackson and Jon Richt also were named to the staff as the Tight Ends Coach, QBs Coach and WRs Coach, respectively.

The Jousters will be playing their home games at BMO stadium. Manning did say that other former Argonauts would also be joining the Jousters such as QBs Nick Arbuckle and Kelly Bryant, RB John White, WRs Keyarris Garrett, Kendall Wright, and Eric Rogers, OL Shane Richards, DL Charleston Hughes, Cordarro Law and Dwayne Hendrix, LBs Odell Willis and Bear Woods, DBs James Sample, Shaquille Richardson and Stanley Jean-Baptiste, K Boris Bede and LS Jake Reinhart.

XFL Founder Vince McMahon then took the stage and announced that the XFL would be playing the 2022 season with 30 teams. The Toronto Jousters are number 29 and the other team would be announced later this offseason. McMahon said the new additions were first class football minds with first rate talent, placed in first rate cities that will allow the league to take another step towards legitimacy. He finished by saying the league was working with former CFL television provider, TSN, on a two game weekly broadcast deal as well. "The more eyes on our league, the better. We're here to stay."

Jacksonville Jaguars signed TE Tim Tebow

Jacksonville, FL - Tim Tebow's return to the NFL became official. Tebow signed a one-year deal worth $920,000, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported. It's no surprise, of course, seeing as Tebow hasn't played in a regular-season NFL game since 2012, but since he's getting a last chance at reviving his NFL career with his former college coach, Urban Meyer, who watched him play at a high level for the Orlando Apollos of the XFL last year.

Crusaders, Defenders and Bolts to play home games at Hall of Fame Village in Canton, Ohio

Canton, OH - The London Crusaders, Cologne Defenders and Berlin Bolts will play their 2022 home games at Hall of Fame Village in Canton, Ohio, the XFL announced. The space will also host the Eastern conference championship game in late June, plus the XFL championship game in July. Hall of Fame Village previously hosted XFL postseason games last year. “The XFL is excited that the Crusaders, Defenders and the Bolts will practice and play games in Canton during the 2022 regular season,” Brian Woods, the XFL executive president of football operations said. “The outstanding regional support we received during our first postseason from football fans in Ohio and Pennsylvania, coupled with our successful partnership with the Hall of Fame Village, led to this moment.”

XFL Hires Mike Nolan as Vipers Head Coach

Mexico City, MEXICO - The XFL announced that NFL veteran coach Mike Nolan has been hired as head coach of the Las Vegas Vipers. Nolan, 63, was head coach of the San Francisco 49ers from 2005-2008, and has held numerous coaching positions for 11 NFL franchises, mostly on defense. "We are honored to welcome Mike Nolan to the XFL family as the new head coach of the Las Vegas Vipers," said Bill Polian, XFL commissioner. "When we confirmed that the XFL would be returning to Mexico City, we immediately started the challenging process to find another experienced, charismatic leader to lead them while creating excitement for the players and fans. Mike was the perfect fit for that role."

"I am very excited to join the XFL," Nolan said. "Playing great football and competing at a high level is what the Vipers are going to be about. The Montreal Alouettes Join the XFL

September 3, 2021

Montreal, QUEBEC, CANADA - Gary Stern along with S and S Sportsco LLC announced that they were granted a 2022 XFL expansion franchise and that the team would be known as the Montreal Monarchs. Spiegel then introduced former University of Washington Huskies head coach, Chris Peterson, as the Monarchs first head coach. Peterson then took the stage and announced his offensive and defensive coordinators. Former University of California and the CFL's BC Lions head coach, Jeff Tedford, would be joining the Monarchs as the offensive coordinator, while former Michigan State Spartans head coach Mark Dantonio would be joining the staff as the defensive coordinator. Former Montreal Alouettes head coach and general manager, Khari Jones and Danny Maciocia, as the QBs coach and GM for the Monarchs, while former Alouettes defensive coordinator Paul Pasqualoni comes over as the LBs Coach. The Monarchs' would be playing their home games at Percival Molson Memorial Stadium.

Stern stated, "We want to be the official Canada's team of the XFL. We plan on pursuing the best players available from the CFL and what Canada has to offer. It will be a priority for this franchise and we're going to start off by announcing the signing of three time CFL All-Star QB Jeremiah Masoli."

Montreal Alouettes Challenges the NFL

September 10, 2021

Montreal, QUEBEC, CANADA - Montreal Monarchs owner Gary Stern again held a press conference with big grins on their faces. "We're about to introduce you all to our new starting running back, Chuba Hubbard!" Hubbard was born in Alberta, Canada and played his college football at Oklahoma State University where he was a two time All-American, three time All-Conference and two time BIG12 conference Offensive Player of the Year. After sitting out his redshirt Junior year due to a conflict with Oklahoma State's Head Coach Mike Gundy, he entered the 2021 NFL Draft where he was projected to be a late first or early second round selection, but fell to the 4th round to the Tennessee Titans. He never signed a contract with the Titans after holding out. S and S Sportsco LLC announced that they have signed Chuba Hubbard to a 1 year $2M deal with the understanding that Hubbard would be entering the 2022 NFL Draft.

Hubbard stated, "I'm excited to be coming back home to Canada and being a Montreal Monarch. I'm very grateful for the XFL and Mr. Stern for giving me this opportunity. I can't wait to get the opportunity to further prove to scouts that I can play at the professional level and that I am worth a 1st round selection."

CFL Takes Over Ownership of Montreal Alouettes Franchise

September 15, 2021

Montreal, ALBERTA, CANADA - For the second time since 2019, the Canadian Football League has assumed ownership of the Montreal Alouettes’ franchise, the league announced. “The CFL has informed the CFLPA that they will assume ownership of the Montreal Football Club effective immediately, as the former ownership group has relinquished control,” the CFL Players’ Association said in a statement. “All club operations will resume, including free agency and preparation for the 2022 CFL season.”

According to the CFL, numerous parties have expressed “serious interest” in purchasing the Als, including individuals, groups and businesses that reside or operate in Montreal or Quebec. With this news, the Als no longer are owned by Clifford Starke. He purchased the team from the league in 2019 who operated the franchise taking over from the late Robert Wetenhall and his son, Andrew. “The CFL wants to express its deep gratitude for their stewardship of the Alouettes,” the CFL stated. “Cliff purchased the team at a critical time in its history. The league will fund all day-to-day operational expenses and continue to ensure all the financial obligations are met.”

XFL Expands Further into Canada

Vancouver, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA - Francesco Aquilini and Canucks Sports & Entertainment LLC announced that the Vancouver Otters would be joining the XFL for the 2023 season as an expansion team. Canucks Sports & Entertainment are the majority owners of the NHL's Vancouver Canucks, the NLL (LaCrosse) Vancouver Warriors, OWL (esports) Vancouver Titans and former owners of the NBA's Vancouver Grizzlies.

Aquilini introduced the crowd to their newest head coach, Bill O'Brien. O'Brien was the head coach at Penn State University in 2012 & 2013 before becoming the head coach for the Houston Texans from 2014 to 2020. He spent the 2021 season as the offensive coordinator for the University of Alabama. Joining O'Brien in Vancouver will be former BC Lions head coach Rick Campbell as the Defensive Coordinator. Campbell served as the head coach of the CFL's Ottawa Axemen from 2014 to 2019 and the DC for the Calgary Stampeders in 2012 & 2013 before that. Former Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress will be joining the staff as the offensive coordinator. Former Chicago Bears' general manager Phil Emery will serve as the GM and Strength & Conditioning coach for the Otters.

The Otters will be playing their home games at BC Place in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The Vancouver Otters will be the first professional football team playing in British Columbia since the BC Lions played their last CFL game in 2019. The Estate of David Braley folded the team earlier this year after the CFL failed to play a game in 2020 and 2021. The Sea Lions plan to spend the next few months negotiating with former BC Lions players and assistant coaches to join the team.

TSN to Broadcast the XFL

New York, NY - The Sports Network(TSN) is the leading sports network throughout Canada and has been expressing interest in adding XFL games to their programming since they ended their relationship with the CFL earlier this year. TSN will be airing all of the Toronto Jousters and Montreal Monarchs games across their networks weekly. The network signed a $30M one year agreement with the league.

With TSN choosing the XFL over the CFL will be very damaging for the league above the border. The CFL has already cut salaries drastically across the league and without any TV money coming in, the league could be in real danger.

The USFL Announced First Eight Relaunched Franchises

November 22, 2021

Los Angeles, CA - The buzz for the United States Football League is continuing to build ahead of the league's April 2022 debut. The new league's city affiliations, team nicknames and logos for all eight franchises were unveiled on "The Herd" on FS1. Fans got their first look at the eight teams, which will be divided evenly into a North Division and a South Division. In the North, the USFL will have the Michigan Panthers, New Jersey Generals, Philadelphia Stars and Pittsburgh Maulers. The Birmingham Stallions, Houston Gamblers, New Orleans Breakers and Tampa Bay Bandits will comprise the South Division. "We're excited to take this next major step in the development of a new USFL," said Brian Woods, USFL President of Football Operations. "These eight teams form the core of our initial league membership and will represent an exciting brand of professional football coming this spring. We look forward to the start of our inaugural season."

For the 2022 season, the USFL will play in one host city, the location of which is yet to be announced. The teams will play a 10-game schedule, followed by semifinals between the top two teams in each division to crown the division winners. Then, the championship will be played between those two winners.

Fleet, Breakers and Panthers to Play at Ford Field in Detroit

Detroit, MI - The San Diego Fleet, Los Angeles Breakers and Oakland Panthers will play their 2022 home games at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan due to California not yet open from the pandemic, the XFL announced. The stadium will also host the Western conference championship game in late June. "Detroit is the city of champions, and Visit Detroit, and the Detroit Sports Commission are excited to welcome the Oakland Panthers, Los Angeles Breakers and San Diego Fleet to the city," said Claude Molinari, President and CEO of Visit Detroit. "Having the XFL in the city will further enhance Detroit's momentum and highlight the incredible cultural vibrancy our region offers visitors and residents alike."

Former Sooner Spencer Rattler Signs with Dallas Renegades

December 13, 2021

Mexico City, MEXICO - Former Oklahoma starting quarterback Spencer Rattler has signed with the Dallas Renegades of the XFL. Rattler entered 2021 as a preseason Heisman favorite and presumed first-round pick for the 2022 NFL Draft following a strong 2020 season. However, Oklahoma's offense was sluggish to open the year and Rattler was benched in favor of freshmen backup Caleb Williams, who led the biggest comeback in the history of the Red River Shoot-out. Williams then started the rest of the season.

Rattler wilted at times this past season under the spotlight and pressure of being the consensus Heisman favorite at Oklahoma. In the XFL, he will get to work through some of those demons without constant pressure to perform in hopes of rebuilding his NFL portfolio. With the rumors circling that the NCAA altering their amateur athletes rules towards payments, most athletes will still try to use the premier programs of the NCAA to launch their future athletic careers.

USFL To Provide Players & Staff Tuition-free, Debt-free College Degree Program

Free, debt-free undergraduate degree program. Todd Haley, Kevin Sumlin, Mike Riley, Bart Andrus named head coaches in USFL

Los Angeles, CA - The USFL announced the hiring of its first four head coaches,Todd Haley, Kevin Sumlin, Mike Riley and Bart Andrus. "Today is a monumental day for the new USFL as we hit the 100 days to kickoff mark," USFL president Brian Woods said. "To attract Mike Riley and Todd Haley, two former NFL head coaches, Bart Andrus, a former head coach in NFL Europe and CFL, plus an experienced college head coach in Kevin Sumlin, to the USFL, speaks to the quality of the league we're building. They all share our belief in high-quality spring football, and we're honored to have them lead their respective teams this year. We can't wait to hit the field!"

Haley, a former NFL head coach with the Kansas City Chiefs, will coach the Tampa Bay Bandits. He went 19-26 with the Chiefs from 2009 to 2011. He since has served as offensive coordinator with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns, where he was fired in 2018.

Sumlin will return to Houston to coach the USFL's Gamblers. The former University of Houston coach also had stops at Texas A&M and Arizona.

Riley, the former head coach of the Chargers from 1999 to 2001, has been hired by the New Jersey Generals. Riley has had coaching stops at Oregon State and Nebraska in addition to professional jobs with the AAF and XFL.

Andrus, who coached in the CFL (Toronto), UFL (Omaha) and NFL Europe (Amsterdam), will lead the Philadelphia Stars.

EASports Announces XFL Videogame

January 9, 2022

New York, NY - The XFL and Electronic Arts have entered into an exclusive agreement to produce an XFL video game in time for the start of the 2023 XFL season that also allows EA to share in the proceeds of future expansion team sales. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"Once again, we are partnering with an industry leader who believes in the XFL philosophy and its growth potential. To the extent that EA helps grow the XFL, they participate in that growth through the increased value of future expansion teams," said Commissioner Oliver Luck. "EA is the videogame industry's gold standard. Arguably, nothing is more important to reach the younger male demographic that we are so strong in than video games. For our core fan, this is akin to a network-television agreement."

Over the next four years and beginning with the 2023 XFL season, EA will partner with the XFL on media and retail marketing, and produce XFL games, the first to be available to consumers at the start of the 2023 XFL season.

"We believe that the business model the XFL has created will provide for a new football experience for videogame fans, and provide EA with an incentive to partner with the XFL to expand the league," said Larry Probst, Chairman and CEO of EA. CFL to Merge with ELF for the 2022 Season

January 10, 2022

Ottawa, ONTARIO, CANADA - The Canadian Football League held a vote amongst it's ownership groups on the future of the league and the league voted seven-to-two in favor of joining the European League of Football for the 2022 season. Facing huge financial strains, the league could no longer stand on it's own. With this announcement, the BC Lions and Calgary Stampeders will not be joining the ELF for the 2022 season. The Lions and Stampeders ownership groups will continue to look for alternative avenues. If either team joins an alternate league, neither ownership group will be allowed to retain their nicknames as they belong to the CFL. The Hamilton Tiger-cats, Ottawa RedBlacks, Saskatchewan Roughriders, Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the newly named Edmonton Elks will join the ELF as the league plays as a 15 team league.

CFL Commissioner Randy Ambrosie did state however, that the CFL may return in 2023 as it's own independent league, but for 2022 that option wasn't viable. Multiple teams wouldn't have survived another season without football.

Two More Head Coaches Revealed

January 20, 2022

Los Angeles, CA - The USFL announced two more of its head coaches on "The Herd," revealing two leaders with major coaching credentials who will lead franchises. Six of the league's eight head coaches have been revealed. The Birmingham Stallions will be coached by Skip Holtz, son of legendary coach Lou Holtz. The Pittsburgh Maulers will be led by Kirby Wilson.

Holtz, who has 22 years of experience as a college head coach, will lead the Birmingham Stallions.

Wilson, whose 36-year career includes 24 years as an NFL assistant, will be a head coach for the first time as he leads the Pittsburgh Maulers.

Indianapolis to Host All Games for USFL in 2022

Indianapolis, IN - The USFL announced that Indianapolis, Indiana, will be the home of all games in 2022. "The first game played in any new league is itself historical and having the USFL's inaugural game simulcast by NBC and FOX makes it even more so," said FOX Sports CEO and Executive Producer Eric Shanks. "It's rare when two competitors can come together and see how cooperation can lead to long-term benefit."

Games will be held at Protective Stadium, the 45,000-seat home of the University of Alabama-Birmingham, with a number of additional games also staged at historic Legion Field.

Jeff Fisher, Larry Fedora Named as Final Two Coaches

January 27, 2022

Indianapolis, IN - The USFL announced its final two head coaches on "The Herd," revealing that one former Super Bowl coach and one former college head coach - both well-known leaders with extensive experience - would join the league. The final two coaches are Jeff Fisher, who was named head coach of the Michigan Panthers and Larry Fedora, who will coach the New Orleans Breakers.

Fisher went 142-120 in 17 years with the Oilers/Titans, with six playoff appearances, three division titles, two AFC Championship games and a trip to Super Bowl XXXIV. In 2012, he was named head coach of the St. Louis Rams, serving through Week 14 of the 2016 season, the team's first after moving back to Los Angeles.

Fedora comes to the USFL with 32 years of experience as a college coach and 11 years as a head coach. He won 79 games as a head coach, including 45 at North Carolina (2012-18). After serving as an analyst at Texas in 2019, Fedora spent the last two seasons (2020-21) as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach at Baylor.

Shea Patterson is Selected First Overall in InAugural USFL Draft

Indianapolis, IN - The 35-round inaugural draft was an exciting two-day event with 300 players selected. The Michigan Panthers were first on the clock and they started the show by selecting former Michigan Wolverines QB Shea Patterson with the No. 1 overall pick. The other first-round quarterbacks included Jordan Ta’amu (Ole Miss) to the Tampa Bay Bandits, Bryan Scott (Occidental) to the Philadelphia Stars, Ben Holmes (Tarleton State) to the New Jersey Generals, Clayton Thorson (Northwestern) to the Houston Gamblers, Kyle Lauletta (Richmond) to the Pittsburgh Maulers and Kyle Sloter (Northern Colorado) to the New Orleans Breakers.

All of the quarterbacks have some previous pro experience, including NFL preseason games, the Canadian Football League, XFL or indoor football.
