Defense finally comes through and gets us into the playoffs. With the Run/Pass settings at 1 and 100, it looks like a lot of teams are passing a LOT. I'm still running 60% of the time on first down, which seems to be working well for me. There were 3 teams with over 5300 yards passing, and 9 over 4000. We were the only team with 2000 rushing yards, and only 4 1000 yard rushers.

RB Bourne led the league in rushing with 1643 yards
K Malloy led the league with 148 points
DE Gary led the league with 22 sacks,
DE Diaz was 7th in sacks with 13
Our team led the league with 85 sacks

DE Gary won both Defensive MVP and Defensive ROY with 65 tackles, 22 sacks, 1 Safety, 1 FR

Team leaders:

Passing: Walker 14 games, 1916 yards, 70.4 QB Rating
Rushing: Bourne 16 games, 350 rushes, 1643 yards, 11 TD, 4.7 YPC, 2 fumbles
Receiving: Montes, 16 games, 51 catches on 106 targets, 724 yards, 14.2 YPC, 2 TD, 9 Drops
Interceptions: Bishop 4
Tackles: Bishop 90
TFL: Alford 12
Sacks: Gary 22
PD: Bishop 29
Bishop and Alford had 1 Defensive TD each
Gary had 1 safety
Covington, Alford, and Gary had 1 blocked punt each.
Darden had 50 pancakes
Malloy was 39 of 44 on FGs (88.6%), including a 64 yarder
Inman punted 105 times, averaging 45.8 yards per punt

This coming season I will add Spread and 4WR plays, as well as Dime defensive plays (I only have 43 and nickel currently). This will take a little while...

I only added Spread plays. I realized with only two good CBs and two good WRs, I shouldn't do 4WR or Dime.

Even though we didn't have a great year, we had the MVP, offensive AND defensive player of the year...

Defensive Rookie of the Year was DE Joseph James. His stat line: 44 tackles, 12 TFL, 4 FF, 4 FR, 14 sacks.

We had a lot of injuries this year, but still won our (very bad) division and won a playoff game. Our biggest need is defensive back, especially CB, and WR.

I'm going to change up a little. So many things that are not as relevant any longer.

2006:

My draft (I drafted at position 25 this season):

I was looking for WR and CB. First pick was easy. Top 3 CBs were all top 10 picks, so I wasn't getting a CB. 2nd pick could have gone many ways, but it's so hard to find speed that, when it's there, I had to take it. I passed up on a CB I thought would have upper 80s speed, that, fortunately, had lower 80s speed... so great choice me :) 3rd round, I needed a CB, and nothing was available, so I found a speedy FS and converted him to CB. He didn't turn out bad, actually very happy with him in the 3rd round. Best player available in 4th was Sipes... knew his strength was subpar, but I thought I could focus on it in training, and he had good speed and agility for a big guy at DT. 5th round was also easy... big guy with good run blocking and good speed for pulling... sign him up and move him from T to G. 6th round was going to be Tran, who I got in the 7th... but I couldn't pass on Kelly. Tall and a deep threat was enough for me to fill out my WR slots, and Tran was still available in the 7th.

I now have 42 players locked up. In two more years, I'll actually be cutting players and my team should be getting good, as they are fitting the molds that I need at most positions. Still a little weak in the secondary, but otherwise I'm good with my starters.

The season: 13-3. Yes, I'm surprised also. With all the speed at WR, I ran more and threw deep more. It paid off in wins, although my QB rating dropped and completion percentage was LOW 40s. I also blitzed a little more this year with 3 CBs on long yardage situations, and it paid off. We had 119 sacks to lead the league. Second place was 59. Our defense was first in points allowed, total yards, and passing yards. We gave up 91 yards per game and ended up middle of the pack in that category.

Here's the best stat... because I was blitzing more on long downs, I was in nickel a lot more, and my #3 CB, Fong, recorded... TWENTY-NINE Sacks. Seems my new defensive coordinator loves to blitz the nickel back...

Of course, we lost in the divisional round... but we had a good season and something to build on for next year.

If anyone is actually reading this, and you want more or different information, just let me know. The fact is... the hardest part is over... winning with a team full of rookies (2001), rookies and 7 2nd year guys (2002), etc. is not realistic. Now I have a core group of veterans, which means I should probably never go below 10 wins again and I should start winning playoff games. I'm already bored because of the 13-3 season, and I think it's downhill from here.

Yeah, you've become successful pretty quickly. Congrats on 13-3.

Thanks PointGuard. This is typical in every solo I've played with this game. No matter what reasonable obstacles I give myself, I win quickly and it's easy to keep it going year after year. This is why I prefer playing multiplayer. But I also prefer the strategy involved in custom play creation and execution of a gameplan based on those plays and the abilities of my players. I just get bored quickly otherwise.

2007... Champions! We win it all.

Draft picks (drafting at 28 this season) are, in order of draft, a CB, RB, CB, LB, FS, LB, T. The 3rd round CB is actually better than the 1st round CB. The FS was a SS that I converted. The Tackle was a pass blocking C that was converted. The two biggest impacts were the 5th round FS, who became the starter, and the 2nd round RB who became the backup and rushed for over 900 yards.

I changed my strategy a little again. On first down, I run out of 4 formations, I, Pro, TwoTE, Jumbo, and I either run inside or throw deep passes. Rest of my down and distance don't change on offense. On defense, I add Dime formation, create one big playbook, and spread it across all down and distance. I now blitz around 60% of the time since I'm more confident in all my guys being able to cover better.

The biggest problem I see on defense is CBs play off the line of scrimmage, the rush up to the WR, and the WR just runs by them, while they stand still... That's where the majority of points are scored against me. I've also noticed, when I have all man coverage (4 rushers and 7 in coverage), that my linebackers AND safeties, 5 players in total, run to cover the TE, leaving 1 on 1 coverage on the outside and no one covering the backs. Again, the problem is I can't tell a guy who to cover. In a perfect world, the LOLB will cover the TE, the MLB and ROLB will cover the backs, or the ROLB will cover the TE on the left side... and the safeties will double the WRs. I'd really love two things in this game... one, the ability to choose which defensive formation you use dependent on the formation the offense trots out, and two, to be able to create plays where I tell players what specific player they are covering. So if a team comes out in TwoTE, I can come out in base 43 and have CBs covering WRs, OLBs covering TEs, MLB covering RB, and safeties doubling whoever is the most dangerous receiver. This would make gameplanning a lot more realistic defensively.

OK, rant over, back to the team. I had a lot of LB injuries this season, so all 7 LBs started at some point, and the rookies made some nice contributions. Rookie CBs ended up 4th and 5th on the depth chart, with little playing time and little effect on the games. The Tackle was injured a good part of the year, but did get a start in as both our starters were Questionable for one game.

Overall, the team makeup looks good, and I'm pretty happy with it. The one thing I'm going to do next year is readjust my offensive strategy to a more West Coast style with a lot of short and medium routes. I would like to see ONE season where Walker has a completion percentage over 50%, and this is a good team to start testing some passing strategies, as I know the run strategy works well and my sweeps are probably my best plays.

Our season: 13-3, and 3-0 in the playoffs. We're first in points allowed and rushing offense. 7th in rushing defense, 8th in points scored, 10th in total offensive yardage, 23rd in yards allowed, 28th in passing yards allowed, and dead last in passing yards on offense... although we threw less than any other team, and were top 3 in yards per pass attempt. As you can see, blitzing helps against the run, but you give up a LOT of passing yards. I may drop blitzing down to 35% or so and just on 3rd and 4th and long blitz 100%.

Players: Bourne again led the league in rushing, with 1646 yards on 337 rushes, a 4.9 YPC and 4 TDs. The rookie backup, however, also had a good season with FOURTEEN rushing TDs (league leader), and 921 rushing yards on 122 carries (a 7.5 YPC avg). Kicker Malloy was #2 in the league in points with 140 (the leader had 168). We had 5 guys on the leader board for sacks. Both DEs (Gary with 26, James with 18), one LB, Oneill, our blitzing LB, with 19, Guerra, SS, with 17, and rookie FS Hardee with 13. Like I said, we blitzed 60% of the time ;) Finally, CB Bishop got 4 picks this year, putting him in the top 10 in INT. Oneill got Defensive MVP (79 tackles, 19 sacks, 4 INT, 1 FR), and FS Hardee got Defensive Rookie of the Year (73 tackles, 13 sacks, 2 INT, 1 Defensive TD, 3 FR). We beat Chicago in the championship game, and the Chicago QB got playoff MVP, even though we won 27-14.

2008 brings a second championship. This is the last update, at this time, for this league. I'm just a little bored now and will try something new.

I draft a SS, C, G, DE, T, DT, LB. The Guard is pass blocking and will become a starter in my new West Coast style offense. I have it set for 1 player on the practice squad, and the LB takes that spot. I drop a T(2007 draft) and DT (Rose, 2001 6.23 pick), leaving me 53 on the roster and 1 practice squad player.

I rebuild my offense to be a pass first, West Coast style offense. We haven't passed well, so i thought I'd see if I can find a way to make it work. Truth is, I don't know. I'm passing 60% on first down, and a little more passing on the other downs.

The season ends 14-2, and we easily sweep through the playoffs. We end up 12th in points scored, 1st in points against. Still #1 in rushing, averaging almost 6 yards a carry, running mostly outside and not much up the middle (plus, the starter Bourne was injured for 6 games!). Passing we ended up 11th, our QB was 53.8% completion percentage... but threw a lot more INT. For the playoffs, I put the pass blocking center in as a starter, and we seemed to do better with 4 offensive linemen with 80+ pass blocking, so I am guessing, in the future, I'll want more pass blocking if I'm going to throw the ball more often.

A few things I've learned about this game, that correlate to real life football.

1) A GOOD blitzing play is worth it's weight in gold. Yes, you do sometimes get beat for a big play, but more often you make the offense miserable. No matter how many blockers the offense has, a GOOD blitz can overcome it.
2) Intelligence has more influence in the game than most people may think. When I look at sack%, completion%, and a few other stats, high Intelligence QBs seem to outperform lower IQ. Same with defense. I had similar CBs, the only major difference was intelligence. The higher (15 points higher) INT guy was getting 2x as many interceptions as the lower intelligence guy, even though he had lower hands skill. Both were similar in speed, agility, strength, endurance...
3) You CAN win throwing the ball, but running the ball is SO MUCH EASIER. When choosing an offense, choose a ground and pound offensive strategy. It's much more successful in the long run.
4) The only reason to EVER keep a back or TE in to block on passing plays is because you have a stupid QB. With a smart QB, giving him more options is better, plus he makes quicker decisions. It helps to force the defense to cover more of the field if you have good route running receivers.

Some things that don't correlate to real life...

1) Screens don't work in this game. I get sacked a vast majority of the time when pulling linemen to run a screen. This is with QBs who are not speedy (50 speed in this league). Flat plays take a long time to develop, so you can't substitute that. I've tried running pitch as a pass play, but the back seems to always run into the line of scrimmage instead of passing, so I assume he becomes a blocker. With the 2D, it's hard to tell a lot of times, because things happen fast, you can't even see the start of the play before the snap, and the little circles often are on top of each other so you can't see what's happening in the play.
2) No matter how fast your pulling lineman is, unless you have a slow running back he's never going to get out front to block. I have all 60+ speed guards. I pull the right guard on right sweeps and he's never in position (with a 90 speed RB). From what I can see in the 2D, it's useless to pull a linemen unless you have super fast linemen AND super slow RB.

Good luck to all. Thanks for reading. And most of all, enjoy the game!

Zoot,

Is there a way to turn off player trading/and contracts so the AI will handle this?

Thanks,
Andy
