Draft/Rookie only Dynasty

Draft/Rookie only Dynasty

Postby ZootMurph » Tue Sep 24, 2019 4:05 pm

The last solo league I played, my lowest win season was 13 wins, which happened twice in the 10 seasons I played. This was with advanced AI enabled. So I'm looking to challenge myself a little more, so here's the plan. I am only allowed to pick up rookie free agents. I'm not allowed to trade, period. The only players I can resign are those I drafted. So my first season I'll have 7 draft picks and 46 rookie free agents. 2nd season will be 14 draft picks and 39 rookie free agents. I strongly expect the first 3-4 years to be big time losing years. After that, I hope I can start winning.

I'll run the first season with whatever roster is there, doing nothing but letting the Ai run it. At the end of the season, I will release everyone. My first season will start with an empty roster, and I will sign coaches that are good with development and young players.

If I can figure out how to do this in video format, I'll do that, but I doubt I can... I'm terribly illiterate when in comes to computers.

Here are the settings:

Starting Year: 2000
32 teams, modern day league
Roster size: 53
Practice Squad: 1
Overtime Format: Sudden Death (No Ties)
Playoff OT Format: Sudden Death (No Ties)
Preseason Games: 2
Increased AI difficulty checked.
Salary Cap: $150 million
Min Contract: $500k
Max Contract: $15 million
Max Contract (draft): $10 million
Roster source is CPU generated and using an auto draft. I chose the Oakland Raiders.

First season, we go 9-7 and make the playoffs... bad luck, no franchise QB this year :( Fortunately, we lose in the wildcard round.

In training camp, DT Rose got nothing. Everyone else got one point somewhere except Covington, who got 7 points. Not bad but not great.

Took me a couple of days to set up the playbooks. On defense, I have 30% blitzes and 70% mixed man and zone. I'll play mostly zone and zone blitzes because I have only have a couple of guys with coverage abilities. On offense, I will work from Jumbo, TwoTE, I Formation and Pro Set. I don't have any other formations in my initial playbook. All plays in my playbooks are custom plays, based on my team's makeup. I'll adjust from year to year. For now, I'm going to be a run first team... 30% running on first down.

Tomorrow I'll run the season. and see how it goes. I still have to work out the depth chart and play my two preseason games.

All 7 draftees will be starters... to give them the best chance to improve.

We lost the first preseason game, 62-9 vs. Cleveland
Won the second preseason game, 24-14 vs. NY Jets.

Week 1, 23-10 loss to Denver.
Week 2, 21-19 loss to Chargers. We missed a two point conversion with 22 seconds left...
Week 3, 24-14 loss to Indy.
Week 4, 45-14 loss to Denver.
Week 5, 41-12 loss to Jacksonville.
Week 6, 49-30 loss to Houston... an offensive explosion for us!

We are giving up over 200 yards rushing every week right now. I adjust a little to focus, aggressively, on stopping the run. We don't have the talent, but it's worth a try.

Week 7, 22-13 loss to Detroit.
Week 8, 34-10 loss to Kansas City.
Week 9, 34-3 loss to Minnesota.
Week 10, 24-2 loss to Kansas City.
Week 11, bye week.
Week 12, 37-3 loss to Baltimore.
Week 13, 31-16 loss to Chicago.
Week 14, 41-6 loss to Tennessee
Week 15, 21-17 loss to the Chargers.
Week 16, 52-3 loss to Green Bay.
Week 17, 26-14 to Miami.

Overall, I was hoping for a win or two, but with a bunch of rookies, it is what it is. Hopefully things will improve in a few seasons.

We were last in the league in points scored AND points allowed. We were 9th in the league in rushing yards, and 8th in passing yards allowed (because we were always getting beat so bad that teams kept running on us).

On our draft picks...

CB Bishop played in 14 games, had 2 INT, 8 PD, and a blocked punt.
SS Guerra played in 11 games, had 1 sack and 7 PD
CB Covington played in all 16 games, had 2 INT and 26 PD. Also led the team in tackles with 86.
G Schreiber played in all 16 games and had 1 pancake.
LB Alford played in all 16 games, had 48 tackles, 7 sacks, 5 TFL, and 1 PD.
DT Rose played in all 16 games and had 11 tackles.
DE Diaz played in all 16 games, had 21 tackles, 5 TFL, and 5 sacks.

All 7 of these draft picks have contracts for next season. It's going to be a long, long, LONG road ahead :)

2002 draft. Obviously, we have the #1 pick. Two top 10 QBs, both seem to be low on INT, which is my #1 concern with a QB. I won't go into reasoning, simply because my offensive pass plays are SO different from the majority of pass plays built into the game that it would immediately give away my strategy. Suffice it to say I NEED a QB with a very high (90+) Intelligence to have ANY success. So I had a choice between a fast, agile running back with low strength/endurance, a fast, not so agile WR with good hands, two offensive linemen, two defensive linemen, a safety, and a couple of linebackers. I like one of the linebackers, WR, and RB as a 1.1 pick. If the WR had a higher grade at Athletics and agility, I would take him, but I can't imagine him being a great route runner, only a deep threat, and with the 1st pick of the draft, I want a guy that can do many things. I choose the RB, Trevor Alley. He is 90 OVR, 93 speed, 81 agility, 70 Hands, 58 Strength, and 62 Endurance. I'll need to pump up Endurance as much as I can in training, because he'll need the endurance to be the featured back. Although I was also thinking of making him a WR, problem is he is only 5'11". If he was a little taller, he'd be a great WR and I'd prefer WR at 1.1 pick... but I took what I thought was the best player available here.

The fact that the other top 10 RB is still available makes me wonder if I can pick him and move Alley to WR... I still need a QB and offensive line, plus a LOT of strength on the defensive line to start stopping the run. We gave up 3300 yards rushing last year... ugly. Anyway, 3 speedy looking RBs and a bunch of offensive linemen are all the 1st round talent still left. I eventually take a late 1st round RB talent, and decide to move Alley to WR. RB Roland Bourne's scout grades are B+, B+, B, B, B+. The other two both have two C's in there. His speed is not what I'd hoped, only 88, but his agility is 90, strength 60, endurance 87 (good enough to be the featured back), and 57 hands. Overall 90 RB. He has a low intelligence for my taste at 36, but we can work on that a little. I'd like 92+ speed in my RBs, for when they hit a hole into the secondary there's a better chance for that TD run, but overall happy with his skill at RB. I move Alley to WR, and he shows as an 83 OVR.

3rd round I will hopefully get an offensive linemen, and 4th I hope to get a kicker. Wow, still the top 10 RB available... wouldn't it be stupid not to take him here? GREAT value... but I have so many other needs... what to do? I decide to follow my plan and get a second guard who looks to be a road grader type for my RB to run behind, big, strong, and hopefully a good blocker... G Charlie Hussey, 80 OVR, 93 Strength, 78 Run Block, only 54 Pass Block... Could be worse, could be better... we'll work on his blocking skills, plus his endurance is super low at 49... that'll need some work also.

4th round I want a kicker. Still a kicker rated 3-4 available, looks like he could be very good, but without scouting the ratings fluctuate a lot. I got Unique a couple times on both distance and accuracy, so I'm hoping he is very good. Easily looks to be the best of the bunch...we'll see... PERFECT!! Distance 93, Accuracy 91, Endurance 93. 85 OVR, 66 INT, and, my favorite for a kicker, 99 Competitiveness. He's a hall of famer if I can put a team together to give him a chance to make some kicks... Now I need some defensive line or linebacker help to stop the run and maybe a QB, TE, FB...

5th round...Not really any defensive talent left. Considering a punter or offensive player. Found a tackle with "Keeps his balance and buys time for the QB." Decent pass blocking, C Physique and looks like good strength.. T Joshua Darden. 74 OVR. 70 Strength, 60 Run Blocking, 81 pass blocking, plus 69 endurance. OK to find a guy with 80+ pass blocking in the 5th round!

6th round... I take RB William DeSantis, big guy, has 'enough speed to run outside' scouting report with a B+ on athleticism, so I'll draft him and have a fast TE on the team. If he had better than C- Physique, I'd consider making him a FB. He has 86 speed, 77 agility, 49 strength, 41 hands (needs work!), 11 run blocking, 26 pass blocking, and 77 Endurance. He'll do, for now. Will drop a lot, but oh, well.

7th round... DT Raymond Gonzalez. 72 OVR, 86 Str, 51 Agi, 40 speed. Best that was left, at least he has some strength for stopping the run, but not as much as I'd like to find.

Not unhappy with the draft, but wish I could have gotten a franchise QB... maybe next year.

OK, I have 14 permanent players, and filled the rest of the roster with rookies again. How my 2001 draft has improved since the day they were drafted and before this, their second training camp....

1.23 CB John Bishop. OVR +1, Hands +3, Tackling +1, Endurance +1.
2.23 SS Eli Guerra. OVR +1, Hands +2, Tackling +1, Endurance +1.
3.23 CB Roger Covington. OVR +1, Hands +3, Tackling +2, Intelligence +1
4.23 G Rayford Schreiber. OVR +1, Hands +1, Run Blocking +1
5.23 LB Emanuel Alford. OVR +2, Agility +1, Speed +2, Hands +1, Tackling +2.
6.23 DT Joseph Rose. Hands +1, Endurance +5.
7.23 DE Charles Diaz. OVR +1, Agility +2, Speed +1, Endurance +3.

In Training Camp 2022, I had 3 players go up over 15... all rookie free agents that I won't have again after this season. My only player to jump a lot was the kicker who is already VERY good. He jumped 7 points, most was kicking power (up to 98 now).

2002 Season: 4-12. We had some league leaders...

RB Roland Bourne led the league in rushing. We run the ball a lot, so that was expected. We have a poor offensive line, so the 5.4 yards per carry was very unexpected. 322 rushes, 1731 yards, 8 TD. Second place had 1726 yards, so he just squeezed it out there.

CB Covington had 5 INT, tied for 2nd in the league.
CB Bishop had 4 INT, tied for 7th in the league.

DE Diaz was tied for 2nd in the league with 15 for TFL.
LB Alford was tied for 7th with 12 TFL.

DE Diaz was tied for 7th in the league with 11 sacks. Also tied for the league lead in forced fumbles with 5.

CB Bishop led the league in defensive TD with 3.

Our season:

Week 1: 9-0 loss to the Chargers (6-10)
Week 2: 36-16 loss to the Giants (13-3)
Week 3: 42-20 loss to Washington (11-5)
Week 4: 16-10 loss to Baltimore (13-3)
Week 5: 30-17 loss to Dallas (9-7)
Week 6: 34-14 loss to Denver (10-6)
Week 7: 16-6 loss to Cleveland (6-10)
Week 8: 15-0 loss to Tennessee (4-12)

I changed our QB at this time. All of them were very bad, I really need to draft a QB. I put one with better accuracy and worse Intelligence as starter.

Week 9: 17-3 win against the Chiefs! (5-11) First win! Woohoo!
Week 10: Bye
Week 11: 16-15 win against the Chiefs. (5-11) Nice playing them twice in a row.
Week 12: 24-16 loss to Denver (10-6)
Week 13: 34-27 loss to Philly (7-9)
Week 14: 29-14 win against Cincinnati (11-5)
Week 15: 24-13 loss to the Chargers (6-10)
Week 16: 17-7 win against Pittsburgh(7-9)
Week 17: 17-16 loss to Buffalo (10-6)

4-12 is a vast improvement with only 7 second year players and a bunch of rookies, but I'll take it. Really looking forward to getting a QB and the upcoming seasons.

Team stats:

Points scored: 30th
Total Yards: 31st
Rushing Yards: 2nd
Passing Yards: 32nd (166.9 rushing yards a game to 107.3 passing yards per game, with a completion percentage of around 37%... last season we had 52% completion %... I NEED a QB!!!)
Points allowed: 17th
Total Yards allowed: 19th
Rushing Yards allowed: 32nd (still need some run stoppers).
Passing Yards allowed: 5th

So we're improving. Stat lines for my 14 drafted players:

CB Bishop: 14 games, 88 tackles, 4 INT, 23 PD, 3 DTD, 3 FF, 2 FR
SS Guerra: 11 games, 55 tackles, 2 TFL, 3 sacks, 1 INT, 10 PD, Safety, 1 FF and 1 FR
CB Covington: 16 games, 84 tackles, 1 sack, 5 INT, 23 PD, 2 FF, 2 FR. Very consistent over 2 seasons for a 3rd round pick. Love this guy already.
G Schreiber: 16 games, 25 pancakes, 17 sacks allowed, 1 FR. A lot of sacks because of the awful QB mostly.
LB Alford: 16 games, 83 tackles, 12 TFL, 8 sacks, 2 PD, 1 FF, 3 FR.
DT Rose: 16 games, 36 tackles, 2 TFL, 3 sacks, 3 FF.
DE Diaz: 14 games, 49 tackles, 15 TFL, 11 sacks, 5 FF, 2 FR
WR Alley: 15 games, 35 catches, 94 targets, 588 yards, 16.8 avg, 83 long, 3 TD, 12 drops. 9 20+ catches and 1 40+ catches. Also, 3 pancakes, hahaha.
RB Bourne: 16 games, 322 rushes, 1731 yards, 5.4 Avg, 42 Long, 8 TD, 18 20+ rushes, 2 40+ rushes, 3 fumbles. 6 catches on 17 targets, 106 yards, 17.7 average, 48 long, 2 drops, 2 20+ catches, 1 40+ catch, plus 4 pancakes :)
G Hussey: 16 games, 33 pancakes, 10 sacks allowed, 1 FR.
K Malloy: 22/23 XP, 24/29 FG (82.8%). Longest: 65 (new league record, I think).3/5 from 50+, 6/8 from 40-49, 11/12 from 30-39, and 4/4 inside 30.
T Durden: 16 games, 56 pancakes, 2 sacks allowed.
TE DeSantis: 16 games, 27 catches on 67 targets, 275 yards, 1 TD, 10.2 avg. 35 long, 6 drops, 1 fumble, 2 20+ catches. 20 pancakes and 3 sacks allowed.
DT Gonzalez: 15 games, 21 tackles, 1 sacks.

Rookies weren't terrible, and the 2nd year players got better. Bourne is likely to be rookie of the year, Malloy had a good season, and the two offensive linemen did pretty well. Gonzalez... eh. The WR and TE... well, they need a QB to find out what they can ACTUALLY do. Overall, good season... players looking good, and got us 4 wins :)

Baltimore is the champion. We lost to the 16-10, so we are getting better!

Bourne wins OROY. Well deserved.

Re: Draft/Rookie only Dynasty

2003 Draft. We finally get a QB. We are picking 2nd, behind the San Francisco 49ers

1.2 QB Noe Walker. 84 OVR, 89 INT, 84 Arm, 83 Accuracy. Wish his intelligence was a little higher, but that'll have to do.
2.2 T Theodore Scott. Scouts talk about his ability in the passing game and running game. Easy choice to get a pass blocker for my new QB... 84 OVR, 62 STR, 85 RB, 81 PB.
3.2 C Jeremy Johnson. 83 OVR, 68 Str, 73 RB, 81 PB. Another guy to block for the QB. Should really help our passing game and not hinder the run game.
4.2 FS Gary Brooks. 69 OVR, 71 Agility, 90 Speed. Low on Intelligence, Tackling, and Hands, but we can work with him.
5.2 SS Robert Turner. I move him to LB, hoping he will be a good coverage LB. OVR 63, Str 37, Agi 87, Speed 80, Hands 57, Tck 50.
6.2 RB Stephen Heredia. Has over 80 on all intangibles, including 91 leadership. Will move him to FB. 60 OVR, 42 Str, 61 Agi, 88 Speed, 37 RB, 32 PB.
7.2 P Steve Inman. 82 OVR, 91 KPower, 74 Kick Accuracy. Best I could find.

So I have the less used positions set at FB, K, and P. I have 21 of 24 starters. I still need WR, DE, LB to fill out my starters, and I can start looking to build depth or improve starters through future drafts. I'm happy with my defensive backs, and my offensive skill players. I will probably use my first round pick next season on a speedy WR and 2nd on a LB or DE. Then I'll try to upgrade at G on offense and DT on defense. From there, best player available. That's the goal. Obviously, when we see the draft that will likely all change :)

Time to fill out the roster, set up for the training camp, and get together information on player's improvement thus far so I can report that to you.

2003 Post draft report (this is changes from the end of last year's training camp, basically one full year.) I will use this format in the foreseeable future.
2001 1.23 CB Bishop: No changes

2001 3.23 CB Covington: +2 Hands, +1 Tackling, +1 Endurance

2002 1.1 WR Alley: +1 Run Blocking, +1 Endurance
2002 2.1 RB Bourne: +3 Speed, +3 Agility, +1 Hands, +1 Endurance
2002 3.1 G Hussey: +1 Hands, +1 Run Blocking, +1 Pass Blocking
2002 4.1 K Malloy: +1 Hands, +2 Kick Power, +4 Kick Accuracy

2003 5.2 LB Turner: +3 Endurance
2003 6.2 FB Heredia: No changes
2003 7.2 P Inman: No changes

2003 Season: 7-9. With the new QB, I changed our offense from a run heavy offense to a more evenly distributed offense, still run first but almost even. Went from 25% pass on first down to 40% pass on first down, and changed other down and distance numbers a bit.

Week 1: 34-15 loss to Miami (8-8). 5 FGs, ZERO TDs.
Week 2: 20-14 win vs Chargers (7-9)
Week 3: 27-16 win vs NY Jets (8-8)
Week 4: 31-6 loss to Chargers (7-9)
Week 5: 35-32 loss to Carolina (8-8)
Week 6: 39-24 win vs New Orleans (4-12)
Week 7: 16-11 win vs Kansas City (7-9)
Week 8: 48-12 win vs Tennessee (6-10)
Week 9: 24-17 loss to Cleveland (9-7)
Week 11: 23-16 loss to Denver (12-4)
Week 12: 33-28 win vs Kansas City (7-9)
Week 13: 35-27 win vs Atlanta (3-13)
Week 14: 30-20 loss to Tampa Bay (11-5)
Week 15: 38-13 loss to New England (10-6)
Week 16: 31-13 loss to Denver (12-4)
Week 17: 16-15 loss to Buffalo (10-6)

We were looking like a playoff team, but our #1 CB Bishop was out most of the year and we hit a run of 5 playoff teams at the end of the season. With Bishop we may have been 9-7... Hoping next season he will be healthy for a full season...

2003 3.2 C Johnson: 16 games, 44 pancakes, 0 sacks allowed, 1 FR
