Welcome to the Defunct Teams Football League, where many of your favorite teams of years past have come back to play on the gridiron once again. Forty defunct teams have come together to form the Defunct Teams Football League. The league is divided into the Western and Eastern Conference, and each conference has four divisions of five teams each. The league will play only two preseason games, because who are we kidding, the preseason is boring. But two games at least get the rust out without risking too many serious injuries. The regular season is played out in 18 games over 20 weeks. The postseason will include the eight-division winners plus six wildcard teams, meaning the top-ranked team in each conference will get a bye in the first round of the playoffs.

Each team will have a 53-man roster with a 10-man practice squad. The league players and coaches are fictional. The overtime rules are one extra quarter in the regular season and unlimited quarters in the playoffs. Extra points are either one- or two-point options. The winners of each conference playoff will face off in the Defunct Bowl for the right to be called the Champion!

Now, let us look at the teams. The 40 teams cover the U.S., Mexico, Canada, and Europe. The Western Conference has four divisions: California Division, Central Division, Gulf Coast Division, and the Southwest Division. The Eastern Conference also has four divisions: East Division, Southeast Division, European West Division, and the European East Division.

The California Division consists of the San Diego Fleet of the AAF, the Los Angeles Express of the USFL, the San Francisco Demons of XFL1, the Oakland Invaders of the USFL, and the Sacramento Surge of the WLAF.
The Central Division contains the St. Louis Battlehawks of the AAF, and the Chicago Blitz, Ohio Glory, Michigan Panthers, and Oklahoma Outlaws of the USFL.
The Gulf Coast Division consists of the Shreveport Pirates of the CFL, the Houston Oilers of the NFL, the Houston Gamblers and New Orleans Breakers of the USFL, and the San Antonio Riders of the WLAF.
The Southwest Division is represented by Memphis Showboats and Denver Gold of the USFL, the Arizona Hotshots of the AAF, the Las Vegas Posse of the CFL, and the Mexico City Aztecs, which is loosely based on the Continental Football League’s Monterrey Aztecs.
The East Division has the Baltimore Stallions of the CFL, and the Philadelphia Stars, New Jersey Generals, Pittsburgh Maulers, and Washington Federals of the USFL.
The Southeast Division contains the Orlando Rage of XFL1, the Miami Manatees of the CFL, the Raleigh-Durham Skyhawks of the WLAF, and the Tampa Bay Bandits and Jacksonville Bulls of the USFL.
The European West and East Division are all represented by WLAF/NFLE teams. In the West, we have the Scottish Claymores, London Monarchs, Montreal Machine, Barcelona Dragons, and the Amsterdam Admirals. In the East, we have the Berlin Thunder, Cologne Centurions, Frankfurt Galaxy, Hamburg Sea Devils, and Rhine Fire.

Each week of the season, I will highlight the Game of the Week as chosen by DDSPF and report on any other news that is noteworthy. It is time to start the 2020 season! Choose your favorite defunct team and cheer them on in the Defunct Teams Football League dynasty!!

Western Conference:

California Division—San Diego Fleet
Southwest Division—Las Vegas Posse
Gulf Coast Division—Shreveport Pirates
Central Division—Chicago Blitz

Eastern Conference:

East Division—Baltimore Stallions
Southeast Division—Jacksonville Bulls
World West Division—Barcelona Dragons
World East Division—Frankfurt Galaxy

Week 1 Game of the Week: Chicago Blitz (0-0) vs. Las Vegas Posse (0-0)

Image

On the Blitz’s first drive, Chicago faced 3rd and 8 on their own 24-yard line. QB Guillermo Wyatt found TE Jordan Rodgers wide open and Rodgers rumbled 71 yards before he was brought down on the Posse 4-yard line. That set up the game’s first score on the next play when Wyatt found TE Andrew Perry on a short out route for an easy touchdown. Las Vegas turned the ball over on their second play, an interception by CB Harold Brown. The second-year player out of Troy ran the pick back to the Posse 13-yard line. Chicago could not move the ball, however, and had to settle for a 27-yard field goal. Las Vegas took their second possession down the field, but they could not punch it into the red zone. K Carlton Martin converted on a 22-yard attempt and got the Posse on the board. At the end of the 1st Quarter, Chicago led 10-3.

Midway through the 2nd Quarter, the Posse put together a drive. QB Bart Castaneda and WR James Bunnell connected twice for 38 yards each, the second time for a game-tying touchdown. The half ended with the game knotted 10-10.

After exchanging punts in the 3rd Quarter, Las Vegas RB Nathan Hamblin fumbled away the football on his own 19-yard line to give the Blitz a short field. Chicago took full advantage, scoring three plays later when Wyatt found WR Robert Gillen for the 4-yard touchdown toss. The Posse responded with a late quarter drive that took just under four minutes and culminated with a Castaneda-to-Hamblin 9-yard touchdown pass. At the end of the 3rd Quarter, the game is tied once again, 17-17.

The two teams traded punts to start the 4th Quarter action. Chicago took possession at their own 25-yard line and Wyatt drove the Blitz down the field with his passing, surgically cutting through the Posse defense. Wyatt went 7-for-8, with the seventh completion caught by Perry for a three-yard score, the tight end’s second of the game! Las Vegas tried to put something together to drive down the field, but ultimately ran out of time. The Chicago Blitz defeat the Las Vegas Posse by the score of 24-17!

Las Vegas QB Bart Castaneda was named Offensive Player of the Game as he went 23-41 for 354 yards, with two touchdowns and one interception. It should have been Chicago QB Guillermo Wyatt, however, who was 26-30 for 289 yards, with three touchdowns and no picks. The Defensive Player of the Game was Las Vegas LB Dewitt Schwartz. The rookie from Wisconsin recorded nine tackles and one sack. The real story to this game was not how Chicago won it, but how Las Vegas lost it. The Posse committed three turnovers in one pick and two fumbles lost. Vegas had more total yards on the ground and in the air than Chicago, but when you lose the turnover battle, you usually lose the game.

Week 1 Offensive Player of the Week—San Diego QB Garrett Grant went 17-30 for 362 yards, with five TD passes in the Fleets’ 45-26 victory over the San Francisco Demons.

Week 1 Defensive Player of the Week—Montreal DE Cruz Arrington had four tackles, three sacks, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery in the Machine’s 20-10 win over the Barcelona Dragons.

Week 1 Highlights:

Down 17-12 with just under two minutes to play, Shreveport LB John Elston intercepted Tampa Bay QB Chris Cole at the TB 32-yard line and returned it to the 5-yard line. The pick set up the winning touchdown, a five-yard pass from QB Richard Brown to WR Larry Brody with 1:17 to play, giving the Pirates the victory over the Bandits 18-17.

Down 27-12 to the New Jersey Generals after three quarters, Washington QB Kenneth Schmidt ran for scores of 82 and 50 yards to help tie up the game 27-27. K Bernard Frias would win the game for the Federals with a 39-yard FG with 14 seconds left in the game to win 30-27.

London Monarchs K Rodney Robinson chipped in a 20-yard FG with 37 seconds remaining to defeat the Scottish Claymores 16-13.

Orlando Rage K Michael Barrios connected on 31-yard FG with 1:32 remaining to defeat the Berlin Thunder 38-35.

Down 31-10 at halftime, Frankfurt Galaxy K Robert Gutierrez hit a 32-yard FG with 32 seconds left to complete a 32-31 comeback win over the Baltimore Stallions. Gutierrez was rewarded by his team by being traded to the Houston Oilers for K Israel Bush and a 2021 7th round pick.

2020 Week 2

Postby awbell3 » Tue Jan 12, 2021 7:27 pm

Week 2 Game of the Week: London Monarchs (1-0) vs. Amsterdam Admirals (0-0)

Image

The punters got a workout in this game, as both teams struggled to score for most of the game. Monarchs’ K Rodney Robinson kicked a 43-yard FG in the 1st Quarter, while Admirals’ K Tom Wolfe hit a 34-yard FG in the 3rd Quarter to tie the game.

London QB Mohammad Ricci drove his team down the field to start the 4th Quarter, capping the drive off with a 4-yard TD toss to FB Stephen Hanes. Down 10-3, Amsterdam tried to create some offense but faced a 4th and 3 on their own 31-yard line midway through the quarter. Admirals’ head coach Levi Serna made the controversial call to go for it. His team failed and turned the ball over on downs. Ricci made them pay in one play, hitting WR Carlos Arrington for a 30-yard TD to put the game away. The Monarchs move to 2-0 with the 17-3 victory.

Arrington was named Offensive Player of the Game, as the 25-year-old out of the University of Washington hauled in seven receptions for 88 yards and a score. The Defensive Player of the Game was Amsterdam DE Craig Ward. The rookie out of William & Mary finished the game with six tackles, a sack, and a forced fumble. Ricci had a great game for the Monarchs, as he went 23-36 for 224 yards and two scores. The Admirals’ QB Stephen Buchanan had a horrible performance, going 13-35 through the air for a mere 130 yards. Amsterdam added only 41 more yards on the ground. It’s uncertain this early in the season if London’s defense is that good, or Amsterdam’s offense is that bad.

Image

Week 2 Offensive Player of the Week—Montreal RB Thomas Glenn rushed 24 times for 324 yards and two touchdowns in the Machine’s 45-10 thrashing of the Barcelona Dragons.

Week 2 Defensive Player of the Week—Shreveport SS Brandon Hurt had six tackles, one sack, and one game-winning safety for the Pirates.

Week 2 Highlights:
WR James Lowery snagged a 1-yard TD pass from QB Alex James with 26 seconds in the game as the Pittsburgh Maulers edged out the Tampa Bay Bandits on the road 21-20.

New Frankfurt K Jeff Guy kicked a 31-yard FG with 44 seconds remaining on the clock to help the Galaxy slip by Arizona HotShots 23-20.

Shreveport won on the road in Sacramento in overtime when SS Brandon Hurt sacked QB Billy Meadows in the end zone for a safety to give the Pirates the 22-20 win over the Surge.

Week 3 Game of the Week: Rhein Fire (2-0) vs. St. Louis BattleHawks (2-0)

Image

One would have expected more offense considered these two teams are a couple of the better offensive teams thus far in the season. Both teams’ first possessions ended with interceptions. Rhein capitalized with an 11-yard rushing touchdown by RB Junior Lopez. The 36-year-old veteran of 12 years does not seem to be losing anything with age, as he finished the game with 95 yards on 23 carries. 2nd year CB Corey Patton picked off Rhein QB John Bundy for the 2nd time in the 1st Quarter, but the BattleHawks could not capitalize. The Fire led the game 7-0 at the end of one quarter of play.

Patton continued to terrorize the Rhein offense, forcing a fumble to start off the 2nd Quarter. St. Louis was able to drive down the field this time, with QB Joseph Sutton connecting with WR Felix Kennedy for an 11-yard TD pass to tie the game 7-7. The Fire responded by driving down the field in their next drive, capped off with a 26-yard TD toss from Bundy to WR Ian Petrie. Rhein went into the half with a 14-7 lead over St. Louis.

The BattleHawks began the 3rd Quarter by driving down the field, but the drive stalled on the Rhein 35-yard line. St. Louis salvaged it with a 52-yard FG by K Anthony Robinson. Rhein started their first possession of the second half with a couple of penalties which pushed them back to a 2nd and 27 on their own 13-yard line. “No problem,” said Bundy, as he connected with TE Thurman Pike, who then rumbled 87 yards for a touchdown! The Fire added a field goal late in the 3rd Quarter to push their lead to 24-10.

St. Louis drove down the field in the 4th Quarter, but a sack knocked them out of field goal range. Rhein took over with six minutes to go in the game and effectively ran out the clock to win the game 24-10 and remain undefeated.

Bundy was named Offensive Player of the Game on 21-36 passing for 339 yards, 2 TD, and 2 INT’s. Patton secured Defensive Player of the Game honors with four tackles, two interceptions, and one forced fumble.

Image

Week 3 Offensive Player of the Week—Tampa Bay QB Christopher Coles was 18-20 with 337 yards and four touchdowns in the Bandits 48-26 win over the Sacramento Surge.

Week 3 Defensive Player of the Week—Frankfurt LB Jeffrey Aguayo had seven tackles, one sack, two interceptions, and a TD in the Galaxy’s 51-40 victory over the Miami Manatees.

Week 3 Highlights:

K Calvin Bunn hit a 22-yard FG with 2:57 left to go in the game to give the San Francisco Demons a 27-24 win over the Los Angeles Express.

Down 19-7 after three quarters, the Arizona HotShots rallied back with a pair of touchdown tosses from QB Raymond Irving to win 20-19.

2020 Week 4

Postby awbell3 » Mon Jan 18, 2021 1:57 pm

Week 4 Game of the Week: Arizona HotShots (1-2) vs. Houston Oilers (2-0)

Image

The Oilers wasted no time charging down the field after the opening kickoff. Two plays, a pass, and a run were all it took for Houston to get into the red zone. But Arizona shocked everyone by putting up a goal-line stand, and the Oilers settled for a chip shot 17-yard FG. The HotShots used that momentum and used a balanced attack to march down the field on their first possession. The drive capped off with QB Raymond Irving finding WR Brandon Embry for a 13-yard score! Houston’s second drive crossed midfield but stalled out. Oiler Head Coach Andrew Hermann decided to go for it on 4th and 2 on the Arizona 42-yard line. RB Mark Torrez failed to get the first down on the rushing play and Houston turned the ball over on downs. The HotShots again had the momentum after a big defensive stand. Irving hit Embry for a 51-yard gain, then tossed a six-yard TD to RB William Howard. Arizona led 14-3 at the end of the 1st Quarter.

Penalties, punts, and sacks were the story of the 2nd Quarter. Houston K Robert Gutierrez missed a 40-yard FG attempt as the quarter was scoreless and Arizona took an 11-point lead into the locker room at the half.

The HotShots took possession to start the 3rd Quarter, but the drive ended quickly when CB Ted Leal picked off an Irving to Embry pass attempt and returned it to the Arizona 18-yard line. Houston QB Charles Hand wasted no time, hitting WR Salvador Steele for the touchdown. Torrez rushed into the end zone for the 2-point conversion to close the score to 14-11. The HotShots took their next possession down the field, but they had to settle for a 22-yard Joshua Walters FG, pushing their lead to 17-11. Arizona’s defense stepped up again, as Hand was sacked twice in three Oiler plays. The second sack resulted in a safety as Arizona’s lead grew to 19-11. Irving found Embrey (again) on the subsequent Arizona drive for a 62-yard gain on 3rd and 10!! Two pass completions later, the HotShots found the end zone once more with an Irving 1-yard TD toss to WR Morris Ouellette. Arizona ended the 3rd Quarter leading 26-11.

The Oilers drove down the field in the 4th Quarter, capping off their drive with a 4-yard TD run by RB James Tucker to cut the lead down to 26-18. On the following Arizona drive, HotShots RB William Howard broke free and rumbled 59 yards for a touchdown!! Down 33-18 and with time running out, Houston went for it on 4th down again, and again they failed, turning the ball over on their own 32-yard line. Two plays later, Arizona sealed the game with a 21-yard TD strike from Irving to TE Alphonse Allen to go up 40-18. Houston scored a TD with 22 seconds to go to make the game look closer than it was, as the HotShots hand the Oilers their first defeat 40-24!!

Arizona RB William Howard is given Offensive Player of the Game honors after rushing 10 times for 155 yards and a score. HotShots DE Charles Oakes earned Defensive Player of the Game for two plays. A tackle that resulted in a forced fumble and a sack that resulted in a safety.

Image

Week 4 Offensive Player of the Week—San Diego Fleet QB Garrett Grant was 15-23 for 445 yards and three touchdowns in his team’s 24-17 win over Oakland.

Week 4 Defensive Player of the Week—Los Angeles Express FS Doyle Leonard had four tackles, a sack, an interception, and a touchdown in a 32-20 win over the Chicago Blitz.

Week 4 Highlights:

San Diego QB Garrett Grant threw a 58-yard TD pass to rookie WR Marvin Saldana with 5:02 remaining in the game to give the Fleet a 24-17 win over the Oakland Invaders.

RB James Leary scored a five-yard TD run with 8:42 to go in the game to give the Amsterdam Admirals a 26-21 victory over the Montreal Machine. The Machine led the game 21-3 at the end of the 1st Quarter.

RB David Padgett broke loose for a 50-yard touchdown run in overtime to lead the Oklahoma Outlaws to a 30-24 win over the Ohio Glory.

Down 13-7 going into the 4th Quarter, the Michigan Panthers scored three touchdowns to win 28-13 over the Raleigh-Durham Skyhawks.

I love this idea. Do you have the images that you could export? I was looking to do a USFL “what if” league, like if it never folded.

I sent you a PM with the link for the USFL artwork I downloaded from the community. If you're wanting all of the artwork from this league, just let me know and I'll get it to you.

Week 5 Game of the Week: Hamburg Sea Devils (3-1) vs. Rhein Fire (4-0)

Image

Rhein becomes the first team in the DFTL to appear a second time in the Game of the Week…and we are only five weeks into the season!! This game did not start off so well for the Sea Devils. The opening kickoff was returned a mere nine yards to get Hamburg started on their own 13-yard line. On the first play from scrimmage, Sea Devils QB Tom Machado is sacked by LB Carl Torres and fumbles the ball!! The fumble is recovered by Torres on the Hamburg 4-yard line. Two plays later, Rhein QB John Bundy finds WR Rudolph Hardy for the 4-yard touchdown and the Fire lead 7-0 just 38 seconds into the game. Hamburg drives down the field but stalls out in the red zone. The Sea Devils send K Julio Bronson on for the 21-yard FG…and he MISSES the chip shot!!! After forcing Rhein into a three-and-out, Hamburg got the ball back. The Sea Devils put together an 80-yard drive in just over four minutes, culminating in a 3-yard TD toss from Machado to TE Bobby Quinonez. At the end of the 1st Quarter, the game is tied 7-7.

Hamburg started the 2nd Quarter by driving 75 yards down the field in just under three minutes. Machado found WR Robert O’Toole for a 41-yard game on the drive’s first play. Four plays later, RB Abraham Ainsworth rushed for a 5-yard score to put the Sea Devils up 14-7. On Rhein’s following possession, the Fire were able to get into field goal range and Shane McFarlane converted a 51-yard field goal to trim the lead down to 14-10. Hamburg drove down the field again, but Rhein stopped the Sea Devils at the 1-yard line. Hamburg had to settle for an 18-yard FG by Bronson, but they were happy to see him make this chip shot to push their lead to 17-10. With four and a half minutes to go in the half, Bundy drove the fire down the field. He hit WR Ernest Lewis for a 34-yard TD with 1:47 to go in the half. The teams go into the locker rooms at halftime tied 17-17.

In the 3rd Quarter, Bundy picked up right where he left off, as Rhein started the second half by driving down the field with ease. Tight end James Paige hauled in a 16-yard pass from Bundy for a score, as the Fire retook the lead 24-17. Late in the quarter, a Sea Devil drive stalled out, but Bronson was able to hit a field goal from 46 yards away to make the score 24-20.

The biggest play of the game came early in the 4th Quarter with Hamburg taking possession on their own 25-yard line. Machado dropped back and threw a pass to Quinonez, but it was PICKED OFF by SS Howard Aleman, who returned the interception untouched for a 30-yard score!! The Fire took the momentum and finished the game with the 31-20 victory to remain undefeated!

The Offensive Player of the Game was Hamburg running back Daniel Aviles, who rushed 16 times for 104 yards, and hauled in four receptions for another 55 yards. Rhein linebacker John Rudolph was named the Defensive Player of the Game as he finished the game with 11 tackles and 2 sacks.

Week 5 Offensive Player of the Week—Orlando QB George Maxfield completed 29 of 41 passes for 401 yards and six touchdowns as the Rage blew out the New Jersey Generals 56-21.

Week 5 Defensive Player of the Week—Denver LB Cesar Gage had nine tackles, an interception, and a touchdown in the Gold’s 47-19 win over the Ohio Glory.

Week 5 Highlights:

St. Louis K Anthony Robinson hit a 53-yard FG with 26 seconds remaining to give the BattleHawks a 27-24 win over the Memphis Showboats.

San Diego K Logan Fernandez made a 40-yard FG in overtime to give the Fleet a 20-17 victory over the New Orleans Breakers.

Berlin RB Samuel Henke’s 42-yard TD run with 10:16 to play proved to be the difference as the Thunder edged the Houston Gamblers 28-27.

Tied at 19-19 going into the 4th Quarter, Denver scored four touchdowns in the final quarter to lead the Gold to a 47-19 blowout of the Ohio Glory.

2020 Week 6

Postby awbell3 » Fri Feb 05, 2021 9:48 pm

Week 6 Game of the Week: Rhein Fire (5-0) vs. Tampa Bay Bandits (2-3)

Image

The Rhein Fire are in the Game of the Week for the second week in a row and the third time in the first six weeks of the season. Why? I guess because they are the only undefeated team left in the league. Regardless, anything can happen in the game of football, so winning is never guaranteed.

Tampa Bay went 3-and-out to start the game. Rhein marched down the field with ease, but the drive ended in the red zone when Bandits CB Jeremy Epstein intercepted Fire QB John Bundy at the 1-yard line. Two plays later, however, Rhein got the ball back when LB John Rudolph sacked Tampa Bay QB Christopher Coles. The hit jarred the ball loose and Rudolph recovered the forced fumble on the 1-yard line. RB Junior Loper ran it in and the Fire leads 7-0. The Bandits responded by putting together a drive that got them as far as the Rhein 5-yard line, but the drive faltered, and Tampa Bay had to settle for a 24-yard field goal by K Mark Scroggins. The Fire went 3-and-out, but Cole coughed up another fumble at the end of the 1st Quarter to give Rhein the ball back on a short field. At the end of one quarter, Rhein leads 7-3.

It only took the Fire three plays to find the end zone, as Bundy found WR Ian Petrie for the 7-yard TD pass. After the Bandits failed to put together a drive, Rhein drove down the field once more. But the Tampa Bay defense came up big again at the 1-yard line when second-year CB Willie Mace picked off a Bundy pass and returned it seven yards. The Bandits had their back against the wall, however, as they lined up for 3rd and 14 on their own 4. Cole dropped back and found WR Michael Burley wide open down the left sideline. The 6th year receiver out of Florida State took the pass 67 yards down the field before being brought down!! Coles stayed with the passing game and two plays later, he connected with WR Raymond Wetzel for the 9-yard TD pass!! Rhein responded by driving down the field and tacking on a 27-yard FG with a couple of minutes left in the half. At halftime, the Fire lead the Bandits 17-10.

Rhein pushed down the field to start the second half, adding to their lead with a 26-yard FG by K Shawn McFarlane to make it 20-10. Tampa Bay put together a drive, helped by three Rhein neutral zone infractions (by three separate players), that culminated in an 11-yard Cole TD pass to WR Nicholas Tharp. Both teams’ subsequent drives ended in punts, but it was Rhein who capitalized when WR/PR Ray Holden returned the punt down the middle for 59 yards!! Holden is finally brought down at the 10-yard line to give the Fire another short field. After an 8-yard Loper run to the 2, Rhein fails to push the ball into the end zone as the 3rd Quarter ends. The Fire leads 20-17 after three.

Rhein kicks a 19-yard FG to start the 4th Quarter and extend their lead to 23-17. Tampa Bay’s first drive of the quarter falters, but they pin the Fire down on their own 2-yard line with an incredible 58-yard punt. Rhein hands the ball off to Loper, but he is caught in the backfield and brought down for a SAFETY!! The Bandits get the ball back down by four. Tampa Bay puts together another Rhein penalty ridden drive, but they cannot get into the end zone and must settle for a 42-yard field goal to bring their deficit to one point. The Fire offense drives down the field once more with a balanced attack. They hold onto the ball and burn nearly five minutes off the clock before lining up for a 30-yard field goal attempt. But McFarlane MISSES the field goal and Tampa Bay gets one more chance with 1:47 remaining in the game! The Bandits, however, shoot themselves in the foot with their first two plays, as Tharp is called for offensive pass interference and Coles is sacked. Operating now from their own 8-yard line, Tampa Bay ends up turning the ball over on downs. Rhein holds on to win this one by the score of 23-22 and remains as the only undefeated team in the DTFL!!!

Rhein RB Junior Loper is named Offensive Player of the Game, as he ran 28 times for 153 yards and a score. Rhein LB John Rudolph earns Defensive Player of the Game honors with nine tackles, two sacks, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery.

Week 6 Highlights:

TE Michael Abraham caught a 1-yard TD toss from QB Stephen Buchanan with 26 seconds to play, as the Amsterdam Admirals defeated the Montreal Machine 31-28!

WR Glenn Halverson’s 12 TD reception with 6:28 left was the difference, as the Denver Gold defeated the Cologne Centurions 16-13.

Down 10-6 after three quarters, QB Garrett Grant tossed two TD passes in the 4th to lead San Diego to a 20-17 win over the Jacksonville Bulls.

The Oakland Invaders made only five first downs as they were blown out by the Arizona HotShots 37-7.

K Norman Doherty was the man in Miami as he kicked five field goals for the Manatees, including a game-tying 28 yarder with 21 seconds to go in the game, as well as the 39-yard FG to win the game in overtime against the Baltimore Stallions, 30-27.

K Garfield McFarlane kicked a game-winning 45-yard FG with 4:42 left in overtime to propel the Michigan Panthers to a 27-24 win over the San Francisco Demons.

A 47-yard FG by K Jeff Guy with 1:10 to go in the game was the difference as the Frankfurt Galaxy edged the Hamburg Sea Devils 20-17.

Week 6 Offensive Player of the Week—San Diego Fleet QB Garrett Grant was 21 of 32 for 400 yards and two touchdowns in his team’s 20-17 victory over the Jacksonville Bulls.

Week 6 Defensive Player of the Week—Rhein LB John Rudolph had nine tackles, two sacks, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery in the Fire’s 23-22 win over the Tampa Bay Bandits.

Week 7 Game of the Week: Denver Gold (3-3) vs. San Diego Fleet (5-1)

With the Rhein Fire on a bye week, the Week 7 Game of the Week gives us a chance to see San Diego QB Garrett Grant in action. In only six games, Grant has completed 60.7% of his passes for 2077 yards, 16 touchdowns, and six interceptions. The 5th year pro out of UCLA is making quite a name for himself in the DFTL. Grant was taken #2 overall in the DTFL initial draft. And who was the #1 pick overall? It was non-other than the four-year pro out of Nebraska, Denver QB Sammy Hibbard. Hibbard has completed 68% of his passes for 1855 yards, 14 TD’s, and nine interceptions. For the first time this season, the experts have all predicted the Gold to win. And just how accurate are the experts? Jeremy Piper is 3-3, Mary Moore is 3-3, Jim Nox is 1-5, and Darren Francis is 4-2 so far this season.

San Diego gets possession first, but the Denver defense dominates the Fleet into a 3-and-out first series. On 4th and 20, San Diego tries to punt, but the Gold special teams BLOCKS the punt and Denver takes their first possession on the SD 19-yard line. Unfortunately, Hibbard and crew can not get much accomplished and they settle for a 32-yard FG to take the early lead 3-0. The Fleet cannot get much going either, but they do get a punt off successfully this time. Denver takes possession on their own 25-yard line. Hibbard drives his team down the field, completing two 25-yard passes to WR Patrick Berrios. As the 1st Quarter is close to ending, RB Michael Carter rushes in for a 2-yard score to give Denver a 10-0 lead.

San Diego continues to struggle against the Denver defense in the 2nd Quarter. The Gold get the ball back at midfield for their first possession of the quarter. One play later, Hibbard connects with Berrios for a 52-yard score to make it 17-0. The Fleet continue their futility on offense while Denver moves the ball with ease. Two field goals and another touchdown later, the game is a blowout with the Gold up 30-0.

Denver starts the second half with Hibbard sidelined by a bruised hip. He is replaced by backup QB Carl Bundy, who eats up nearly half of the 3rd Quarter clock on their way to another field goal. The two teams exchanged possessions and at the end of three quarters, the Gold lead 33-0.

Bundy throws an 18-yard TD pass to TE William Molina in Denver’s first possession of the 4th Quarter to make it 40-0. An offensive shootout ensues, but it is too little, too late for San Diego. Denver wins this one in a blowout by a score of 54-21.

Denver WR Patrick Berrios is named the Offensive Player of the Game after he hauled in five receptions for 129 yards and a touchdown. Denver LB Cesar Gage earned Defensive Player of the Game honors by recording five tackles and a sack.
