Chris Redman Returns to Guardians

May 27, 2007

New York, NY - Chris Redman returns as the Guardians starting quarterback on Saturday night when the Guardians take on the Columbus Ghosts. Garcia was placed on the injured reserve list after suffering a fractured tibia in Week Three. Redman is now ready to come back. "It's been a long time and it feels like forever," said Redman. "I'm definitely excited to get back and play and also a little apprehensive. I just want to get this game going and try to help get the Guardians back on a winning streak."

Redman also felt support was the key to his return. "I'm excited that my first game back is a home game," he said. "I feel that fans really helped me get through this. Their support really made a difference, especially at times where I didn't know if I'd ever be able to play football again. To make my return at home is something I am happy to share with them."

"It's been a long journey as far as preparing for his return," said Guardians general manager Ron Jaworski. "We are hoping for the best but preparing for the worst. One, I'm happy for him to be back and lead this team. Two, I think he brings a certain energy and confidence to the team. It hasn't been easy but like anything else, we were going to put him back on the field when we thought he was ready and this is that moment."

XFL Week 14: Aztecs Playoff Hopes Sacrificed

May 28, 2007

Mexico City, MEXICO - Pressure. Defined as urgency, harassment and influence, pressure was the theme of the Aztecs' win over the Orlando Rage in front of 23,655 fans. For Orlando, there was a need to pressure one of the league's top quarterbacks, Quinn Gray. The Rage then held the Aztecs scoreless in the first half while putting up 17 points to take a 17-0 halftime lead. Mexico City came out in the second half and outscored the Rage 9-0, but came up short. "We clearly didn't come to play tonight," said Aztecs head coach Jim Tomsula. "I am pleased with how we came out in the second half, but we have to turn this thing around."

With the scoreless, Rage QB Joe Hamilton dissected the Aztecs secondary with a 10-yard touchdown pass to WR Kevin Swayne that put the Rage ahead, 7-0. The pressure was then on Aztecs QB Quinn Gray and the Rage truncated what looked to be a scoring drive when DB Atari Bigby picked off a Gray pass that continued the Rage's momentum heading into the second quarter. Just a few ticks into the second quarter, Hamilton hit WR Doug Gabriel down the sideline to put the Rage near the red zone before arcing a beautiful 28-yard pass that Swayne reeled in for his second score. The Rage continued to trouble Gray on the next drive, when defensive pressure forced him to dink a pass off the turf before his next attempt was tipped into DB Clevan Thomas' hands. Hamilton went deep and for the jugular on his first pass on the Rage's ensuing possession. He looked for Gabriel again and hurled a 26-yard bomb his way but a defender was all over him and drew a pass interference flag. Upon second glance, however, Gabriel had actually reeled in the pass that would setup a last second field goal.

-- (9-3)Rage 17 - 9 Aztecs(4-9)
(ORL): QB Hamilton - 18/26 223 yards, 2 TDs, RB Fason - 13 carries, 42 yards, WR Gabriel - 11 catches, 116 yards, WR Swayne - 2 catches, 41 yards, 2 TDs
(MEX): QB Gray - 17/37 216 yards, RB Nash - 11 carries, 37 yards, WR Nash - 7 catches, 55 yards, WR Soward - 5 catches, 74 yards

XFL Week 14: Redman Triumphant in Return

May 29, 2007

New York, NY - The triumphant return of All-XFL QB Chris Redman left no doubt that when he is in the lineup, the New York Guardians are still a formidable team. Returning to the field in over a year, the standout QB put up big-time numbers going 17-30 for 251 yards and three touchdowns against the Columbus Ghosts. The final tally had the Dragons winning by two touchdowns, 31-17. "The energy level that they played with and the confidence they showed with Chris' return was really obvious out there," said a relieved head coach Rusty Tillman.

Stepping into the pocket, Chris' first pass was crisp, as he hit WR Yatil Green for a 9 yard gain. Yet, the next three plays would result in two incomplete passes and a 4th down running play that failed to pick up the single yard necessary for the first down. However, an offsides penalty on Columbus would give the Guardians new life on the series. This time Redman made no mistake about it as he skied one of his patented bombs to WR Zuriel Smith for a 31 yard TD. "It was good because I had a few plays where I struggled a little bit, and then had to come up and make a play," said Redman. When we did that, not only did it help my confidence, but maybe the rest of the team, to say okay we can get down, have some tough times but still succeed. I can't give enough credit to the offensive line for the job they did. They did probably make it look easier than it was at times."

XFL Week 14: Chicago Stun Mountain Lions

May 30, 2007

Chicago, IL - The Enforcers took its first lead of the game on its initial possession of the fourth quarter. Getting fine protection from his offensive line, Enforcers QB Jarious Jackson hit the streaking WR Ruvell Martin with 19-yard touchdown pass, culminating a 13-play, 85-yard drive. Mountain Lions QB JT O'Sullivan responded on the next drive as he eluded the pass rush and stepped up in the pocket by sliding to his left. At the same time WR Freddie Mitchell, perhaps the surest-handed receiver in the league, broke free in the end zone. He caught an easy 27-yard touchdown pass from O'Sullivan and Salt Lake City had regained the lead at 30-25. But the Enforcers was not about to let its impressive win slip away. Martin caught his second touchdown pass of the game on the next possession. The six-yarder from Jackson demonstrated the receiver's toughness and concentration.

The back-and forth nature of the game came to an end with that score. The Enforcers defense stepped up and made its first major stop when DB Jeremy LeSueur intercepted his third pass of the season at the Salt Lake 19. Two plays later, Coach Singletary surprised the Mountain Lions by giving the ball to FB JR Niklos and the big fullback rumbled eight yards for the touchdown. Salt Lake City trailed by nine points and was desperate to get back in the game. O'Sullivan directed an impressive drive that gave the Mountain Lions a 1st-and-goal at the 1-yard line. However, Chicago's defense simply wouldn't allow that final yard. The goal line stand actually got its start on a 15-yard reception by Mitchell. The receiver caught the ball in stride and appeared to be on his way to a touchdown but DB JoJuan Armour delivered a crushing tackle at the 1. After RB Eric McCoo was stopped for no gain, O'Sullivan lost the ball after he was harassed by DL Israel Idonije. With the ball loose, Idonije made another huge play by recovering at the Chicago 9.

-- (8-4)Mountain Lions 30 - 39 Enforcers(1-11)
(SLC): QB O'Sullivan - 21/33 235 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT, RB McCoo - 6 carries, 11 yards, WR Mitchell - 12 catches, 150 yards, 1 TD, TE Johnson - 6 catches, 69 yards

New York Guardians Make Coaching Change

May 31, 2007

New York, NY - New York Guardians general manager Ron Jaworski and Owner George Randolph Hearst III announced they will not be renewing head coach Rusty Tillman's contract at the end of the 2007 season. "We have made this decision at this time in the best interest of Rusty, his family, staff and players" said Jaworski. "Now the organization must move forward which is essential when you make decisions like this. Notifying Rusty at this time allows the Guardians time to begin to identify potential candidates."

"Ron and I sat down and have evaluated the past 14 games and feel at this point in time, it is in the best interest of the organization not to renew Rusty's contract. We wish him the best and look at this as an essential step in the success of this organization."

XFL Week 15: Commanders Block Ghosts Advancements

June 4, 2007

San Antonio, TX - The Commanders wasted little time kicking off Military Appreciation Day when the game's first play, a QB Michael Bishop pass to WR Bethel Johnson put the team on the Columbus 12-yard line. Three plays later, Bishop found TE Jason Rader in the end zone to make it 7-0 minutes into the contest. It was only fitting after one half of play that both teams fighting for the playoff positioning would be knotted up at 14-14. The Commanders came out of the gates in the second half and gained some momentum on when they scored first and LB Will Overstreet blocked a field goal attempt that was nearly returned for a touchdown. But minutes later Ghosts QB Joe Germaine kept the ball himself and powered into the end zone for a 21-17 lead.

Apparently the San Antonio offense didn't want to be on the field much as it once again took little time getting down to business. Bishop orchestrated a three-play scoring drive that culminated in a sixteen yard touchdown bullet to WR Rashaun Woods to put the Commanders back up 24-21. Overstreet would torment the Ghosts on their next drive when he tipped away a pass to the end zone on fourth-and-goal to regain possession for the Commanders. Columbus would make it interesting however, with a fumble recovery and a quick first down pass to set up the game tying field goal with little more than two minutes remaining. However, Overstreet again came off the edge to leave Columbus empty handed. "We had opportunities to take control at several points tonight and we just didn't do it," said Ghosts head coach Marc Trestman. "It wasn't just the final offensive series, we had chances throughout and couldn't get the job done."

-- (8-5)Ghosts 21 - 24 Commanders(9-4)
(COL): QB Germaine - 32/48 297 yards, 3 TDs, 2 INTs, RB Clarett - 22 carries, 83 yards, WR Rambo - 6 catches, 82 yards, 1 TD, TE Blakely - 7 catches, 74 yards, WR Moore - 7 catches, 73 yards, 1 TD
(SA): QB Bishop - 14/24 161 yards, 1 TD, RB Griffin - 5 carries, 11 yards, WR Johnson - 6 catches, 89 yards, WR Woods - 4 catches, 39 yards, 1 TD

XFL Week 15: Valor Clinch Playoff Berth

June 5, 2007

San Antonio, TX - Sparked by a relentless defensive effort, the Washington Valor used a 21-0 second half run to come from behind and beat the Salt Lake City Mountain Lions for their seventh win, 31-17. Salt Lake scored in the final minute of the first half to take a 17-10 lead at intermission. RB Kevan Barlow scored on a 1-yard run with 37 seconds left following Washington head coach Doug Williams receiving an unsportsmanlike penalty, with no time left. Valor DB Dainon Sidney had a pair of interceptions and Washington recovered three fumbles in the second half as the Valor held the Mountain Lions scoreless after intermission. DL Nathan Davis recovered a fumble from Mountain Lions RB Eric McCoo to start the second half and the Valor tied the game when QB Shaun Hill found WR Geroy Simon on a 5-yard scoring pass just over seven minutes into the third quarter. Sidney's first interception led to a Hill to WR Rod Gardner 25-yard scoring pass gave the Valor a 31-17 lead after three quarters that would stand.

"We played a complete game tonight," said Valor head coach Doug Williams. "There are always areas to improve, but this was definitely the lift we needed and will carry us through the remainder of the season."

-- (6-7)Valor 31 - 17 Mountain Lions(8-5)
(DC): QB Hill - 20/28 234 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT, RB Suggs - 21 carries, 81 yards, 1 TD, WR Gardner - 6 catches, 75 yards, 1 TD, WR Simon - 5 catches, 56 yards, 1 TD

XFL Week 15: The Stars' Playoff Dream Dies in Memphis

June 6, 2007

Memphis, TN - The Orlando Rage and Washington Valor did their part on Saturday. Behind a strong defensive performance, the Valor took down the Mountain Lions while the Rage defeated the Mammoths in their regular season finale. The Stars' bid for the playoffs however came to an end as they fell to the Memphis Express 24-17. Los Angeles' rookie QB Ryan Dinwiddie made his first pro start in place of a hobbled Cade McNown. After starting the game only 3 of 9 for 85 yards, Stars head coach Rick Neuheisel pulled the rookie for starter McNown with a playoff spot hanging in the balance. McNown immediately led the Stars on a 9 play 81 yard touchdown drive. Cade was huge on this drive going 7 of 8 for 78 yards and a touchdown to WR Darnell McDonald from 4 yards out to put the Stars up 17-14 at the half. The Express defense unofficially sealed the deal when LB Rocky Calmus picked up a Star's RB Larry Croom fumble at midfield and lateraled to DB Gerrick McPhearson, who then returned the pick 46 yards for a touchdown. The defensive score gave Memphis the 24-17 lead. The score remained that way all the way through thanks to some dominant defense.

DiNardo Will Not Return As Head Coach

June 10, 2007

Birmingham, AL - The Birmingham Steel announced that Gerry DiNardo will not be returning as head coach for the 2008 season, but will remain with the organization in a football administrative and consulting capacity. "Gerry has been a valued associate since this league kicked off in 2001," said Owner Jim Speros. "His passion and commitment for this game is unmatched. I look forward to continuing the relationship in his modified capacity. Our fans expect and deserve team performance that competes at a championship level year in and year out. We are committed to delivering on those expectations. We will begin the process immediately to fill the void. We are confident that this job is as attractive as any in the XFL."

"Although our playoff record wasn't what is should have been, I am proud to have been associated with this group of players, some of who will be future stars of the XFL," said DiNardo. "I want to thank Jim and ultimately if this change helps the organization achieve success, I will be happy."

XFL Quarter-Final: No Clemency for Salt Lake in Oklahoma City

June 11, 2007

Oklahoma City, OK - This season both times they met, the Mountain Lions' defense shot down a Roughnecks offense piloted by QB Aaron Garcia with a flurry of sacks and interceptions. Second-string QB Brock Huard was at the controls this time around, giving the Roughnecks reason to believe things would be different. And, sure enough, they scored 17 more points than before. Huard connected for four touchdowns, wasn’t sacked and could blame his mistake, a fumble on a botched snap. As has become the norm in Roughnecks' games, the second half seemed largely anticlimactic. The Mountain Lions twice narrowed the gap within a touchdown, benefiting once from “interference” on an overthrow, yet OKC kept their distance by virtue of answering a touchdown with a touchdown of their own. NBC apparently sensed the drop in electricity, as they chose to pre-empt the final minute for the sake of the Salt Lake City Mountain Lions' fans. The Roughnecks, though, already had a prize of their own in the bag: a guaranteed trip to the second round of the playoffs.

-- (8-6)Mountain Lions 14 - 34 Roughnecks(12-2)
(SLC): QB O'Sullivan - 15/20 193 yards, 2 TDs, RB Barlow - 4 carries, 12 yards, WR Warren - 3 catches, 86 yards, 1 TD, TE Jolley - 3 catches, 43 yards, 1 TD

XFL Quarter-Final: Kicking Issues End Express Story

June 12, 2007

Memphis, TN - The Memphis Express fell to the Columbus Ghosts 36-35 as a storybook ending to the season slipped away in the fourth quarter. In a game that featured two teams with no quit in them, the Ghosts leveraged a win as Express K David Kimball missed a 56-yard field goal on the last play of the game. The final difference of the game came late in the fourth quarter as Kimball missed an extra point as the Express took the lead 35-29 with just over three minutes left on the clock. Columbus responded as QB Joe Germaine methodically moved the ball down the field and scored on a one-yard quarterback keeper leaving the Express with only forty-seven seconds left on the clock to overcome a one-point deficit. "I am real proud of those men in the locker room," said head coach Marc Trestman. "They came together as a team. They fought hard to get here and it is a shame it had to end this way."

-- (8-6)Ghosts 36 - 35 Express(9-5)
(COL): QB Germaine - 21/27 208 yards, 2 TDs, RB Clarett - 25 carries, 107 yards, RB Shelton - 15 carries, 90 yards, WR Moore - 4 catches, 70 yards, 1 TD, WR Rambo - 8 catches, 72 yards

XFL Semi-Final: Underdog Mammoths Win After a 16 point Deficit

June 18, 2007

Oklahoma City, OK - Turnover after turnover, the Mammoths were losing by a total of 16 points and that wasn’t even half way through the 1st quarter. Everything that went wrong happened in the first seven minutes of the game. The Mammoths didn’t score on their first drive, so they punted the ball to the Roughnecks' 26-yard line. Four plays later including a 29 yard pass interference call, brought the Roughnecks to the Mammoths’ 30 yard line. In the next possession, they tried to start a scoring drive, but the pass was picked off and returned 17 yards for a touchdown. Score: 0-9 Roughnecks. The Roughnecks continue this pummel knocking the ball out of RB Rashaan Salaam’s hand, who would soon be bench after a dismal day of fumbles and the Roughnecks' DB Derrick Strait recovered the ball on the Mammoths’ 29. That drive was capped with RB Ken Simonton’s 1 yard touchdown run. Score 0-16 Roughnecks. The Mammoths started four straight scoring drives over 3 quarters. After a blocked punt which got the Mammoths first and goal on the four. Two attempts later, QB Brad Banks broke the plane of the touchdown line and four minutes later Banks found TE Mark Anelli to make the score 16-14 at the half.

In the third quarter, everything looked great for the Mammoths. The Roughnecks' offense wasn’t producing and the Mammoths' defense was stopping them. After a punt, the Mammoths took over and RB Dahrran Diedrick converted a 3rd and 2 to keep the drive alive before Banks found WR Herb Haygood and the 21-16 lead. Then the Roughnecks scared the Mammoths a bit with two deep passes by QB Brock Huard. First to WR Dane Looker, a 33 yard bomb and the killer was a 55 yard pass to WR Travis Wilson for the touchdown. The Mammoths answered immediately with a pass from Banks to WR Troy Bergeron, who earlier got the wind knock out of him jumping for a few extra yards that lead the Mammoths to a touchdown. Down by four points, Oklahoma City coach Dave Campo made an awkward decision to go for a the field goal, that would have leave the Roughnecks still down by one. With less than four minutes to go, the Mammoths needed at least one first down to run down the clock and they did with a huge 3rd down conversion with FB Joel Mackovicka.

-- (9-6)Mammoths 28 - 27 Roughnecks(13-2)
(OMA): QB Banks - 19/30 144 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT, RB Diedrick - 14 carries, 59 yards, WR Haygood - 3 catches, 37 yards, 1 TD

XFL Semi-Final: Defense is King of the East

June 19, 2007

Orlando, FL - Starting QB Joe Hamilton played one offensive snap all game. He pitched the ball to WR Kevin Swayne, who passed to fellow WR Andre King for a 5-yard touchdown. Orlando recaptured the lead on that play and RB Ciatrick Fason ran in a two-point conversion to increase the lead to 20-14. Defense was a staple of the game as the two teams were knotted at six after the first fifteen minutes. Each quarterback threw interceptions in their first possessions and the Ghosts recorded a defensive stop the next time on the field. Columbus put the next points on the board with a seven-yard touchdown pass from QB Joe Germaine found WR Lance Moore. Orlando was on the cusp of scoring on their next possession but WR Craig Yeast fumbled at the goal line and Ghosts DB Abraham Elimimian recovered. The Rage defense produced a stop and QB Kliff Kingsbury connected with WR Doug Gabriel for a touchdown to capitalize.

"Kliff played very well," said Rage head coach Jay Gruden. "He is going to be a great quarterback in this league and showed what he can do when he was thrown into the game today."

XFL Million Dollar Game: Three Peat for Omaha

June 25, 2007

Orlando, FL - Orlando's opening drive came to an abrupt end on the just the second play from scrimmage, as Mammoths' DL Cullen Jenkins intercepted Rage QB Joe Hamilton's pass, setting up a 47-yard field goal by Paul Edinger. On their next drive, Mammoths' QB Brad Banks led an 8-play, 85-yard drive that was capped off with a 41-yard pass to WR Troy Bergeron. On their next possession, the Mammoths failed on three passes to turn an interception into a touchdown. So, they had to settle for a 27-yard field goal. In the second quarter, Omaha's defense prevented the Orlando Rage from getting some needed heat and the Mammoths' offense managed to get a touchdown near the end of the half, thanks to a 15-yard pass from Banks to WR Matthew Hatchette. With that touchdown, Omaha entered halftime with a commanding 20-0 lead. In the third quarter, the Rage finally managed to score, thanks to RB Onterrio Smith getting an 8-yard touchdown pass. However, the Mammoths responded with Banks finding Bergeron again. Trailing 26-7 entering the fourth quarter, the Orlando Rage needed points and they needed them fast. The Rage's next touchdown would come from a 2-yard pass from Hamilton to WR Doug Gabriel. Near the end of the game, Hamilton ran in a 1-yard touchdown. However, by that point of the game, that touchdown meant nothing, they failed to overcome a huge deficit. When the official clock reached 00:00, the Mammoths celebrated their third straight XFL championship.

"Winning the XFL is awesome," Banks said after the game. "It's a great feeling. We're a great team with so many good people. It is just an awesome group. We have great ownership and they give us everything we need to be successful."

"They did a great job of putting pressure on me up front and being physical in the secondary," Hamilton said. "Our offense just wasn't able to get into a rhythm."

(OMA): QB Banks - 16/22 209 yards, 3 TDs, RB Gordon - 24 carries, 89 yards, WR Hatchette - 5 catches, 78 yards, 1 TD, WR Bergeron - 6 catches, 78 yards, 2 TDs

CFL Announces Ricky Williams Rule

June 30, 2007

Toronto, ONTARIO, CANADA - Outgoing CFL commissioner Tom Wright, stated that a rule will be introduced before the start of next season that would prevent a player under suspension in the National Football League from signing with a CFL club. Some columnists dubbed this "The Ricky Williams Rule" because the running back joined the Toronto Argonauts after the NFL suspended him for the 2006 season for failing its substance abuse program for the fourth time. Williams made over $500k from the Argonauts and only played in four games due to injury for the team.

XFL names Huyghue Second Commissioner

July 15, 2007

Greenwich, CT - Veteran NFL executive and agent Michael Huyghue has been named the second commissioner of the XFL. Previous XFL commissioner, Oliver Luck, recommended Huyghue while accepting the position as League President and Chief Operations Officer, that Basil V. DeVito Jr stepped down from last month. Huyghue helped launch both the original NFL World League in 1992 and was one of the first employees for the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he served as senior vice president of football operations and handled contract negotiations along with salary cap matters and other player-related responsibilities. He also had stints with the NFL Players Association and was vice president and general counsel of the Detroit Lions. Huyghue left the Jaguars in 2001 to launch his Jacksonville-based Axcess Sports & Entertainment LLC, which represents athletes and entertainers including NFL players Pacman Jones and Kyle Brady as well as hip-hop artist and noted sports fan Snoop Dogg.

Huyghue, who will be based in the newly relocated XFL’s New York City headquarters, said his firm was working on the XFL’s formative business plan over the past several months and enough interest has developed that it has led to him believing league expansion to twenty franchises is likely. “I just see considerable upside,” said Huyghue, who has equity in the league as part of his compensation package. “It is the right model with right talent salary cap, and in right cities, you can make a viable, affordable, entertaining product. It’s a costly enterprise. TV is an important component and we will be looking for a third partner in that realm." He also said “the business plan is solid enough that I’m confident that the league’s top 10 players can make $1 million or more, so we’ll compete for name players right out of the box. The sports landscape is littered with the carcasses of new sports leagues over the last decade and a half. Americans are sports fans in large measure because of tradition and continuity. This league must be doing something right."

Orlando Rage's general manager Tom Veit has been named as the new Director of Football Operations replacing Michael F. Keller while Frank Vuono was named as the new Chief Operations Officer, JK McKay as the new Vice President and Head of Business Operations replacing Bill Hicks. Los Angeles Stars' general manager John Elway would also be taking over as Director of the Football Competition replacing Dick Butkus who stepped down as general manager of the Chicago Enforcers, but kept his minority ownership stake. Dean Blandino was named as the new Director of Officiating, while Brendan Rowe joins the League as Senior Director of League Operations & Football Development.

Birmingham Steel Hires Marty Schottenheimer

July 20, 2007

Birmingham, AL - Marty Schottenheimer, sixth on the NFL's all-time coaching victories list, is heading to the XFL to be the coach of the Birmingham Steel, the league announced Wednesday. Schottenheimer, 67, has not coached since he was unceremoniously fired by the San Diego Chargers after a 14-2 season in 2006, primarily because of a dysfunctional relationship with general manager A.J. Smith. Schottenheimer will coach the roster of the Birmingham Steel and is expected to name former XFL quarterback Scott Milanovich as offensive coordinator, Kurt Schottenheimer as defensive coordinator and a former NFL assistant, Paul Hackett, as his quarterbacks coach and Joe Cealera as the general manager.

"I am excited to lead the Steel and am eager to return to the football field," Schottenheimer said in a statement announcing his hiring. "I have been impressed with the fervor and passion that has been created in the region for the team. I promise the fans there that we will repay them with a great product on the field and a franchise to make them proud."

"The Steel fans have been very patient in waiting for a head coach and we believe we have rewarded them with a great leader and a proven winner," XFL commissioner Michael Huyghue. "Marty Schottenheimer is among the NFL coaching greats and his record speaks for itself. He is another quality coach whose appointment will benefit all areas of the XFL from player development to ensuring we continue to provide great entertainment for our fans."

The United Football League is Born!

July 26, 2007

New York, NY - The United Football League was unveiled at a press conference in New York City with Cedric Dempsey, former president of the NCAA, as its Chairman. Before that, Dempsey was the longtime athletic director at the University of Arizona. The rest of the league's Board of Directors included various well-known collegiate athletic directors including Doug Dickey, Martin Massengale, Gene Corrigan, Jack Lengyel, Charles Young and Gary Roberts.

The UFL plans to be a professional American football league premised on the rule that all of its players have to have a four-year university degree, as employees of the UFL rather than of the franchises, with the league planning to pay each player a median compensation of approximately $240,000-$500,000 far in excess of the CFL's and XFL's average salary to attract the best non-NFL players with the league paying their top players upwards of $1,000,000.

For its proposed 2008 season, which the league announced a 10-game season for, from April 12 to June 14, the UFL has established eight franchises. The teams which has hired coaches, signed players, and contracted with stadiums to host games for 2008 were the California Redwoods, Texas Tuskers, Michigan Panthers, Arizona Hotshots, New York Skyscrapers, Florida Blacktips, Ohio Glory and Virginia Destroyers.

The Redwoods will be coached by former NFL Europe head coach Mike Jones, Tuskers by former CFL quarterback Ron Calcagni, Panthers by John Fontes, former assistant coach of the Detroit Lions, Hotshots by former Arizona Rattlers head coach Danny White, Skyscrapers by former New York Guardians' head coach Rusty Tillman, the Blacktips by former Florida Gators' quarterback Shane Matthews, the Glory by former Cincinnati Bengals head coach Dave Shula, and the Destroyers by former Arena Football League quarterback Andy Kelly.

"What will make this league different is the relationship it will have to the university system, the National Football League and the fact that its players will be recognizable to fans," says UFL founder Cedric Dempsey. "We will only go where the interest in spring football is already very, very intense. A place like Gainesville, Florida, is probably a make-or-break city." Other universities that have signed options to host games include Virginia, California, Houston, Arizona State and Rutgers. UFL clubs will use existing stadiums and facilities at each college.

The UFL has announced partnerships with New Balance, official supplier of on-field UFL team apparel, Schutt Sports, official supplier of helmets and protective equipment, Baden, official supplier of UFL footballs, Rogers Athletic Company, official supplier of football equipment and the NFL Officiating Department, which will provide officiating support.

Omaha Mammoths Lose WRs Troy Bergeron and Timon Marshall to NFL

August 1, 2007

Omaha, NE - The 2007 XFL Champion Omaha Mammoths have lost a member of their title team, for the time being. The Atlanta Falcons of the NFL signed WR Troy Bergeron while the Chicago Bears signed WR/KR Timon Marshall. "Troy is an outstanding athlete that has the skills to play at the next level and if the right situation presents itself, he definitely has a shot," said head coach Frank Solich. "The Mammoths organization wishes him the best of luck but we will not be disappointed if he is back in the royal blue and orange next season. We're very happy for Timon and for his family also. He is a classy and professional young man."

"Omaha' fans have been great, and the experience of playing in the XFL has helped pave the way for me to achieve my goals both on and off the field," said Bergeron.

"We'd like to see what he can do," Atlanta Falcons head coach Bobby Petrino said. "He's tall and fast, catches the ball well. It'll be fun to see how he does out here."

Desperados Hire Dan Quinn as new Defensive Coordinator

August 5, 2007

Dallas, TX - Dan Quinn, who has been with the New York Guardians and Memphis Express, has signed a two-year contract to be the Dallas Desperados' new defensive coordinator, head coach Jerry Glanville announced. The Desperados have fired defensive coordinator Steve Carson after another disappointing season. "Dan Quinn is well known for getting the most out of his players," said Glanville. "He'll bring a tough attitude to our defense and a great deal of experience to our coaching staff. I believe his wealth of contacts in the coaching world and previous experience recruiting players will help us right away. In addition, he knows our league very well, which hopefully helps us with our first goal every year, to win the Western Division."

Enforcers hired Steve Livingstone and Rage hired Sammy Schmale as their new general managers.

NFL, Titans Oppose Trademark of Roughnecks XFL Logo

August 22, 2007

Greenwich, CT - The National Football League and the Tennessee Titans have filed an opposition against the XFL over their logo for the Oklahoma City Roughnecks on the grounds that it’s too similar to the old Houston Oilers logo. The Houston Oilers logo still appears on new merchandise and, according to the notice of opposition, “still retains valuable goodwill and consumer recognition”, and the XFL plans on keeping the Roughnecks in Oklahoma City. The NFL’s filing of opposition goes on to read that “Consumers encountering Applicant’s Roughnecks mark, particularly in connection with Applicant’s Services, are likely to associate the mark with Opposers, based on the similarity of the parties’ marks and their respective goods and services.” “There is a legitimate case from a trademark perspective”, trademark attorney Josh Gerben of Gerben Intellectual Property. “Ultimately, the more similar trademarks that exist in a given field, the less protectable each individual trademark becomes. If the XFL’s trademark registered without some agreement between the XFL and NFL, it arguably would limit the NFL’s scope of rights it may enjoy in the Oilers’ trademark. The test is whether or not consumers would be confused as to the source of the goods/services”, Gerben continued. “In other words, would football fans think that the Roughnecks were connected to the NFL and/or the Oilers when they see the Roughnecks logo? If the case were ever to proceed to trial, the NFL would likely need to provide survey evidence to show this was occurring. It is very difficult to compare trademark cases. I think that this case should settle, and, the Roughnecks should be able to continue using the logo,” Gerben said. “There would appear to be enough differences in the logos that they can co-exist in the marketplace. For the NFL to win the case they would essentially have to prove that the image of an ‘oil derrick’ was highly unique for a sports team, and, that no other sports team could use an oil derrick as a logo. I think this would be a tough argument to win. This makes settlement more likely.”

We reached out to the NFL for comment earlier today but have yet to hear back. As it stands, the XFL has until September 22th to file its response to the USPTO regarding the NFL and the Titans’ trademark opposition to the Roughnecks logo.

Orlando Rage Add New Investors

August 16, 2007

Orlando, FL - Arthur Williams, owner of the Orlando Rage, announced that the franchise has added several new investors to it ownership base. The new investment group is led by Brett Bouchy, former owner and President of the AFL's Orlando Predators, who will act as Operating Partner. "I have been seeking an infusion of local partners for some time to ensure the long-term financial stability and success for the Rage here in Orlando", said Williams. "Brett has a proven track record of sustained success in the arena league and his presence will only make us stronger."

"I have always admired the Orlando Rage as a model franchise in the XFL", said Bouchy. "Along with Arthur and my other new partners, we are committed to elevating that great tradition."

Ottawa Force QB Jason Gesser a Coach, TV Commentator in the Offseason

August 27, 2007

Ottawa, ONTARIO, CANADA - When it comes to football, Jason Gesser has it covered as player, coach and commentator. "I don't know what else I could do. I guess I could be a trainer. I love the game and have a passion for the game, first of all playing," he said. Gesser, who led the Cougars the 2003 Rose Bowl, and USC's Carson Palmer were co-Pac-10 Offensive Players of the Year. Palmer went on the win the Heisman Trophy and Gesser finished seventh. Professionally, Gesser has played for the Calgary Stampeders of the CFL and the Tennessee Titans of the NFL, as well as the Force. For the last three years he has coached at Franklin Pierce High and he will begin his second season with FOX Sports this year for college football coverage.

"Being a coach definitely helps out in being a player. I think my game has risen up so much in the last couple of seasons just because of the fact of being a coach and having the game plan," he said. "It helps me understand where the coaches are coming from and how they are organized and how they are doing things. I think I enjoy being a coach so much because it helps me so much as a player and being a commentator helps you with the scheme of the game a lot better. It helps you understand the personnel of the game a lot better. It brings a whole different realm by looking at the game from the box," he said. "You're so used to being at eye-level, being in the line of fire, being in the contact right there and you don't get that eye-in-the sky view other than by watching tape. It really is a different perspective on the game."

Tightened Territorial Allocations Still Provide Some Local Talent

October 15, 2007

New York, NY - The XFL tightened up the territorial areas across the league in order to make next month's Supplemental Draft a little more vital, but WRs Taylor Jacobs, Reche Caldwell, Jerome Mathis and Craphonso Thorpe, OL Fred Weary, DL Tim Anderson, Jesse Mahelona and Bo Schobel, LBs Anthony Schlegel, DBs Michael Boulware and Sammy Davis were all allocated. "We're really excited to get these guys on board. We've upgraded our team by filling some holes with experienced players who have proven themselves in the NFL," said Columbus Ghosts head coach Marc Trestman.

"I'm happy to be back playing in the area of New York. I graduated from Hampton University and I'm just excited to play for the Guardians and start a new part of my career," said Mathis.

"Bo is a proven player who has great athletic ability and all of the qualities that you look for in a great pass rusher," said San Antonio Commanders head coach Mike Riley. "We really believe he has the opportunity to be a difference maker in our game."

Enforcers Strike Gold in Supplemental Draft

November 15, 2007

New York, NY - Enforcers owner Rocky Wirtz was brimming with pride and congratulating the team's executive staff and coaching staff on their scouting efforts after landing former NFL first round draft pick Joey Harrington with the first selection in the 2008 XFL Supplemental Draft. "We definitely used this draft to take a step to show that we are for real," said Chicago head coach Mike Singletary. "We are excited that we were able to address key areas immediately and that our team is serious about contending for a title."

DL Kenechi Udeze, DB Jimmy Williams, RB LaBrandon Toefield, DB Lamont Thompson, LB Raonall Smith, LB Jorge Cordova, LB Caleb Miller, DB Stanley Wilson, DL Claude Wroten, RB Musa Smith, LB Antwan Peek, DL Larry Tripplett, LB Jordan Beck and RB Brian Calhoun also were selected in the first round. "We look forward to seeing Musa in a Commander uniform," said Commanders head coach Mike Riley. "He'll be a great addition to this team. Musa will give us some flexibility because he can play running back and also return kicks."

No Ottawa Franchise Until At Least 2009 for CFL

December 20, 2007

Ottawa, ONTARIO, CANADA - The Ottawa franchise did not play in the 2007 season. The CFL indicated that there was not enough time for a potential new owner to get the franchise up and running until 2009 at the earliest. However, the league did approve of a new franchise for Halifax for the 2008 season.

UFL Announces Plans for Inaugural Season

January 9, 2008

New York, NY - The UFL has announced that it will proceed with it's initial season of football starting in April and will culminate in a championship game but it will be a scaled-down affair, with only five weeks in the season and six teams, dropping the Michigan Panthers and Ohio Glory from the ranks. Future seasons likely will be more elaborate. Originally, the eight teams were to have salary caps of $20 million each and $12 million salary floors but the UFL ultimately proved unsuccessful in securing commitments from enough of the deep-pocketed owners their original plan required. The original plan was for owners to pay $30 million to buy a half interest in a team. The league would own the other half. The UFL had difficulties finding willing owners that the board of directors considered suitable. The league planned for each team to eventually sell shares to the public that they hoped could raise another $60 million. For now, there’s no TV deal in place, and no investments. To make a soft launch financially tolerable, player salaries had to be dramatically scaled back. Dempsey confirmed that $35,000 was the league mandated salary for skill players and $25,000 for punters, place kickers and long snappers.

UFL founder Cedric Dempsey said the UFL ultimately will try to regionalize its teams so they’re affiliated with specific NFL clubs. “The real focus is to treat this as a soft launch and come back strong in 2009,” Dempsey said. “We’ve all taken a dose of what the economy is today and realized that some contracted form of business with a eye focused toward smaller rather than larger makes a lot more sense, with the dramatic shift in wealth in this country, it just didn’t make sense to go out with the original plans.” The UFL hopes a functioning league will yield a superior position for attracting potential owners and the NFL association over a league still under construction, however, they would now have to do so with XFL and CFL cast-offs.

Herman Moore Joins Valor Front Office

January 15, 2008

Washington, DC - The four-time NFL Pro Bowl wide receiver, who spent last season as the Valor's radio color commentator, will return to the team to assist with business development. The University of Virginia graduate's contacts and experience in the state along with his deep rooted knowledge of the inner workings of professional sports are expected to bolster the Valor's business efforts. "This is a tremendous opportunity for me and a great chance to extend what has already been a wonderful relationship," said Moore. "My goal is to start to learn the business side of professional sports while bringing the knowledge I have already gained in my other business ventures."

"Herman's business acumen coupled with his football expertise make him ideally suited to help the Valor increase visibility and esteem across Virginia," said Valor general manager Joe Theissman.

XFL Week 1: Steel Bruise Guardians

February 18, 2008

New York, NY - It might have been ugly, but the Birmingham Steel did what they needed to do on Sunday afternoon in beating the New York Guardians, 17-13. The Steel certainly didn't help themselves when at the end of the first half, they turned the ball over twice to let New York back into the game. A fumble by RB Curtis Keaton and another by QB Quincy Carter led to 10 Guardians points. It eliminated any momentum the Steel could have had going into the second half and looked like it could torpedo their dominant start. Coming out of halftime, though, the Steel decided it was time to impose their will on New York's statically stout defense and RB Shaud Williams was the man for the job. Williams ran with authority in the second half and finished with 66 rushing yards while averaging 6.6 yards per carry.

Marty Schottenheimer defeated Jim Fassel in the first XFL matchup between the two experienced NFL coaches. "All those guys looked really good today," Schottenheimer said. "This was only one game though and we have a long way to go. We needed those guys to step up and they did."

XFL Week 1: Harrington Looks Sharp in XFL Debut

February 19, 2008

Memphis, TN - With 1:50 remaining in the third, Enforcers QB Joey Harrington found WR Ruvell Martin for a 7-yard touchdown that gave Chicago a 17-13 advantage. Express RB Trung Canidate rushed in from the 1-yard line for his second touchdown of the afternoon, giving the Express a 20-17 lead after three quarters. After Harrington found WR Marquis Walker for a three-yard touchdown pass, K Shane Andrus missed a 33-yard field goal attempt. The Express kicker had one field goal attempt blocked and also missed from 45 yards earlier in the contest. RB Noach Herron sealed the game for the Enforcers with a three-yard touchdown run to push the Chicago lead to 30-20. Express QB Adrian McPherson found WR Eddie Berlin for a four-yard touchdown pass with: 34 remaining in the game and cut the deficit to three points, 30-27. On the ensuing kickoff the Express were ruled offside on an on-side kick attempt and Chicago ran the remaining time off the clock for the victory.

"I am really comfortable with the corps of receivers we have and they proved it today," Harrington said. "Those guys really made a difference today and they are going to have to for the rest of the season."

XFL Week 1: Roughnecks Edge Desperados in Opener

February 20, 2008

Dallas, TX - Inspired by a last-minute stand at the end of the first half, Oklahoma City opened the third quarter with two straight defensive stops. Stud LB Zeke Moreno intercepted Desperados QB Clint Stoerner and Roughnecks QB Brock Huard followed that up with a touchdown pass to WR Sean Morey on the first play of the series. On the ensuing defensive stand, DB Antonio Perkins knocked the ball away from the Dallas receiver to force a fourth down, where Dallas' field goal attempt was no good. RB Jamal Robertson caught a screen pass on the next offensive possession and rumbled for 11 yards and a 1st down, setting up a Huard touchdown pass to TE Trent Smith, putting the Roughnecks ahead 29-22. The teams traded scores again, but the Roughnecks went ahead for good when Huard connected with TE Mikhael Ricks on a six yard pass with less than a minute to go. "We showed mental toughness throughout the game. We got the win, and we're only going to get better," said Roughnecks head coach Dave Campo.

"It felt like we did all the right things," said Desperados head coach Jerry Glanville. "We have to give them credit. They made the plays when they needed to, and we didn't."

XFL Week 1: Commanders eek out Victory over Mountain Lions

February 21, 2008

San Antonio, TX - On the first play of the fourth quarter Commanders DB Joselio Hanson picked off Mountain Lions QB Ingle Martin in the end zone as the Commanders took momentum in the game. San Antonio marched the ball down the field as QB Michael Bishop found FB Brandon Miree wide open in the end zone for his second career touchdown catch. Up 24-15 the Commanders and Mountain Lions traded scores as newly acquired RB Musa Smith scored with 2:59 left on the clock to make it 31-29 Commanders. After a stalled Commanders drive, the Mountain Lions had one final hope as K Bill Gramatica lined up to take the game winning field goal with 0:05 left on the clock. However the kick sailed left and the Commanders came away with the victory.

XFL Week 2: Rage Rally Comes up Short in Washington

February 25, 2008

Washington, DC - The Washington Valor got their first victory of the season this evening with their 20-13 victory over the Orlando Rage. The Valor were welcomed in their first home game of the season by a crowd of 30,318 at Audi Field. The Valor moved to 1-1 on the season while the Rage fell to 0-2. QB Drew Henson directed Washington to an eight play, 76-yard drive to start the game, capped by RB Wali Lundy's 25-yard touchdown run. After an exchange of punts, the Rage put together an impressive drive, moving to the 38-yard line before a RB Maurice Hicks' fumble ended their scoring threat. Henson gave the ball right back with an interception to Rage DB Atari Bigby. Orlando QB Joe Hamilton responded with a drive that ended with a 36-yard field goal to make it 7-3. Washington answered with a seven-play, 65-yard drive of its own, going up 10-3 on a 27-yard field goal. For most of the first half, the Rage's defense repeatedly bailed out the team with timely hits while holding the Valor to only two scoring drives. However, Valor QB Henson scrambled for 16 yards and ran a draw up the middle for 12. He then picked his way through the middle for a 5-yard touchdown with 26 seconds remaining to put Washington up 17-3. Hamilton rallied the Rage just before halftime with an excellent drive to set up a 45-yard field goal attempt that was blocked as time expired narrowing the deficit to 17-6.

The Rage were unable to carry the momentum into the second half, going three and out. It looked as if Orlando was once again going to watch the game get away from them until the Valor missed on a 38-yard field goal. Hamilton then led an impressive drive that featured some nice runs by RB Onterrio Smith and short receptions by WR Kevin Swayne. Hamilton's five-yard touchdown throw to TE Lawrence Hart on the next play were Orlando's first second half points this season and made it 17-13. Orlando moved the ball to Washington's 48-yard line with 3:46 remaining in the game but turned the ball over on downs.

"I think the model set up for the XFL works," said XFL commissioner Michael Huyghue after the game. "The hard salary cap that can not be circumvented and the wage scale that is still attractive without going overboard. With the bonuses, some of the motivation comes from that. The structure, salary and huge bonuses help. It's still a good brand of football and you are going to see the guys that really, really have that desire to play."

-- (0-1)Rage 13 - 20 Valor(0-1)
(ORL): QB Hamilton - 11/26 196 yards, RB Smith - 17 carries, 89 yards, WR Swayne - 4 catches, 36 yards
(DC): QB Henson - 18/29 214 yards, 1 INT, RB Suggs - 19 carries, 43 yards, RB Lundy - 13 carries, 46 yards, 1 TD, WR Simon - 6 catches, 98 yards

XFL Week 2: Ghosts Rock Guardians

February 26, 2008

Columbus, OH - Guardians head coach Jim Fassel knew that these were two evenly matched teams and that the game would come down to scheme and execution rather than talent. Fassel was correct in his pregame assessment and for the better part of three quarters, the two teams went back and forth, alternating scores. But when Guardians QB Chris Redman threw interceptions on consecutive plays in the third quarter, the Ghosts took advantage of the turnovers and defeated the Guardians 40-29 before a crowd of 36,051. Columbus QB Joe Germaine threw three second-half scoring passes and also ran for another score to allow Ohio's team to seize control. "They were very sharp offensively with everything they wanted to do," Fassel said. "Against a defense like ours, they knew that they couldn't make mistakes or we would hurt them. Usually when a team enters the game with that kind of mindset they are a little conservative, but that was not the case today. Again, I give credit to their coaching staff. They outschemed us. We have big-play guys on offense and they would not let us make big plays. We got outcoached today and that will not happen again."

Redman was victimized by Ghosts DB Rashidi Barnes for the two picks. The first one was a spectacular over-the-shoulder grab that set up a 14-yard touchdown pass to WR Ken Yon Rambo, giving Columbus a 23-15 lead.

-- (0-1)Guardians 29 - 40 Ghosts(1-0)
(NY): QB Redman - 19/29 269 yards, 2 TDs, 2 INTs, RB Scobey - 10 carries, 73 yards, RB Jackson - 12 carries, 73 yards, WR Mathis - 5 catches, 107 yards, WR Walters - 5 catches, 76 yards, 2 TDs
(COL): QB Germaine - 15/23 177 yards, 3 TDs, RB Clarett - 20 carries, 74 yards, WR Moore - 7 catches, 126 yards, 1 TD

-- (1-0)Roughnecks 14 - 24 Aztecs(0-1)

XFL Week 2: Bandits Steal one from Salt Lake

February 27, 2008

Tampa, FL - The Salt Lake City Mountain Lions took their second consecutive loss of the season when QB JT O'Sullivan's two-point conversion pass to WR Paris Warren was knocked away by Tampa Bay Bandits DB DeMario Minter to secure a 34-33 victory for the home team. Warren made an outstanding catch with no time left on the clock in the fourth quarter for a 26-yard touchdown that gave the Mountain Lions a chance to win the game. The pass from O'Sullivan was intended for WR Aaron Boone, it was tipped into the air and Warren made a diving catch to bring the Lions within one-point. "We're on the road and the guys were a little tired," Mountain Lions head coach Dennis Erickson said. "I didn't want to leave it up to a kicker to try and tie the game."

O'Sullivan threw two interceptions late in the game that enabled the Bandits to take a lead when his pass was picked off by LB Tyson Smith and returned 42 yards for a touchdown. "We had a five point lead and the ball and threw an interception to a linebacker," Erickson said. "Inexcusable for a veteran quarterback to make that throw, hats off to the Bandits they made a great play."

-- (1-0)Bandits 39 - 32 Mountain Lions(0-1)

Los Angeles, CA - The new-look Enforcers offense showed plenty of explosiveness with receivers Ruvell Martin and David Givens combining with TE Tory Humphrey to dominate Los Angeles' defensive backs. Martin, Givens and Humphrey each caught a touchdown pass while the defense made big play after big play in the second half, starting with DB JoJuan Armour's interception on the Stars' first possession of the third quarter. Enforcers QB Joey Harrington took advantage of the pick when he connected with Martin on a gorgeous 33-yard touchdown hookup. The score extended Chicago's lead to 35-17 and the defense did not let Los Angeles back in the game. Overall, the Enforcers forced five turnovers with the trio of Armour, DB Jeremy LeSueur and DL Israel Idonije caused most of the havoc.

"The three of us have been playing together a long time," Armour said. "We know Los Angeles well and we know they are a smart, veteran team. But we also know that receivers in this league are a little looser with the ball early in the season. We made a conscious effort to go for the turnover and try to strip the ball. It worked out pretty well. We made the strips and got the turnovers, but it was our defensive line that gave us the opportunity by putting a lot of pressure on them from the start."

-- (1-0)Enforcers 33 - 27 Stars(1-0)
(CHI): QB Harrington - 19/34 225 yards, 3 TDs, RB Herron - 24 carries, 155 yards, WR Martin - 7 catches, 122 yards, 1 TD
(LA): QB McNown - 20/33 260 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT, RB Barlow - 11 carries, 78 yards, WR McDonald - 5 catches, 82 yards, 1 TD, WR Copeland - 6 catches, 82 yards, 1 TD

King Out 3-4 Weeks

February 29, 2008

Tampa, FL - Tampa Bay Bandits starting quarterback Shaun King is expected to miss the next three-to-four weeks with a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee. King suffered the injury during the Bandits' 39-32 win over the Salt Lake City Mountain Lions. An MRI exam confirmed the initial diagnoses and showed no further damage. King was injured on a 21-yard touchdown pass to WR Reche Caldwell as he suffered a late hit from Mountain Lions DL Stalin Colinet, who was flagged for a roughing the passer penalty on the play and later ejected from the game for a separate incident. Gibran Hamdan is expected to step in for King and lead the Bandits.

XFL Week 3: Force Shut Down Valor and Win at Home

March 3, 2008

Ottawa, ONTARIO, CANADA - In the Ottawa Force's home opener tonight, RB LaBrandon Toefield rushed for 68 yards and a touchdown and WR Darius Watts had 6 receptions for 88 yards and a touchdown, propelling the Force to a 24-7 win over the Washington Valor. Force QB Craig Nall opened the scoring with a 2-yard touchdown pass to TE Jerome Collins with 9:39 remaining in the first quarter. Washington QB Drew Henson began the second quarter with a 9-yard pass to WR Rod Gardner to the Force's 34-yard line. The Valor continued their methodical march down the field, culminating in a 2-yard scoring toss from McPherson to Gardner, tying the game at 7-7. A defensive struggle ensued for the remainder of the first-half, capped by Valor DB Dainon Sidney intercepting a Nall pass on the Valor' 5-yard line, preventing the Force from a go-ahead score. After the teams traded possessions in the third quarter, the Force returned a short punt to the Valor' 39-yard line. Four plays later, the Force set up their second score of the game with an acrobatic catch by Watts at the 1-yard line. The catch was originally ruled a touchdown, but Valor' Head Coach Doug Williams challenged the spot of the reception, resulting in the call being overturned. The Force would score on the following play with a 1-yard run over the right side by Toefield. After the score, both teams were again unable to sustain drives. Ottawa K Shaun Suisham converted a 42-yard field goal with 11:45 remaining in the game to push the lead to 17-7. Head coach John Jenkins would return to the ground game, running Toefield and Lionel Gates, before Nall found Watts to close the scoring. Nall completed 17 of 25 for 201 passing yards with 2 touchdowns and 1 interception.

Force head coach Jenkins said, "It's great to play at home and get a win. It's off to a good start for us. We played much better defense, similar to how we started defensively last week. Pretty good feeling of urgency on defense. Offensively, we sputtered a lot. Sometimes we looked okay, sometimes not so good. But we did take advantage of some points there. Injury wise, we got banged up quite a bit. It was a very physical game, but I'm very happy to walk away with the first victory of the year.

-- (0-2)Force 27 - 13 Valor(1-1)
(OTT): QB Nall - 17/25 201 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT, RB Toefield - 24 carries, 68 yards, WR Watts - 6 catches, 88 yards, 1 TD

XFL Week 3: Mountain Lions Escape 0-3 Start

March 4, 2008

Salt Lake City, UT - Down 13-0 four minutes into the game, Salt Lake reeled off 21 consecutive points on their way to the club's first win of 2008. The surge was charged by DL Felipe Claybrooks' first career touchdown after he scooped up a Desperados fumble and scampered 12 yards for the score with four minutes remaining in the first half. Claybrooks wasn't the only lineman to perform the first end zone celebration of his career. OL Phil Bogle caught a 6-yard lob from QB JT O'Sullivan after releasing downfield as the designated tight end during the fourth quarter. Dallas pulled within one late in the fourth after an WR Chad Owens' 52-yard kickoff return bolstered the score to 19-18. WR Freddie Mitchell hooked up with O'Sullivan on the ensuing possesion, however, to give the Mountain Lions the lead back. DL Jamal Reynolds thwarted any chances of a Dallas comeback after forcing a Desperados QB Tim Rattay fumble at the 1-yard line with 52 seconds left on the clock. Salt Lake was able to kill the remaining time to seal the victory. The Mountain Lions defensive line applied pressure on Rattay all night, flushing him out of the pocket and making him use his feet.

(SLC): QB O'Sullivan - 17/25 268 yards, 3 TDs, RB Croom - 11 carries, 70 yards, WR Mitchell - 8 catches, 118 yards, 1 TD, WR Warren - 2 catches, 51 yards

XFL Week 3: Defense Optional in Memphis

March 5, 2008

Memphis, TN - The Express led the Blaze 43-41 in the final minute when QB Adrian McPherson found WR Tyrone Calico on a five-yard touchdown pass to give the Express a 49-41 lead with just 57 seconds remaining. New York took over on their own twenty five yard line and drove to Memphis' 19 before QB Chris Redman's pass fell incomplete with no time left in the game. "It's great to win," Express head coach Butch Davis said. "It's going to be short-lived unless we fix our defense, but I am happy as heck for our offense. Defensively I am going to have a heart attack."

The turning point of the game was provided by Express K David Kimball who drilled an onside kick off a New York up-man and the ball was recovered by Memphis' DB Gerrick McPhearson. The Express would capitalize on the stunning turn of events when RB Cedric Houston went in for a two-yard touchdown run giving the Express their first lead of the game at 36-29 with 1:18 left in the third. "David has been working on that line drive at practice and I thought we should take a shot," Davis said. "I think David Kimball was our MVP tonight, he didn't miss one kick."

"It's another tough loss and the penalties and turnovers hurt us," said Guardians head coach Jim Fassel. "It's like we have a dark cloud following us, and we have to get out from under it. It's not time to panic and it's not time to make wholesale changes."

-- (0-2)Guardians 41 - 49 Express(0-1)
(NY): QB Redman - 17/22 205 yards, 4 TDs, 1 INT, RB Scobey - 11 carries, 28 yards, WR Green - 8 catches, 80 yards, WR Walters - 4 catches, 74 yards, 1 TD

XFL Week 3: Zabransky Wins XFL Debut

March 6, 2008

Los Angeles, CA - The Oklahoma City Roughnecks jumped out to an early 22-0 lead en route to a 34-15 victory over the Los Angeles Stars in front of 33,415 fans. Oklahoma City QB Brock Huard missed the game to celebrate the birth of his son, opening the door for rookie Jared Zabransky to earn the win in his first career start. Oklahoma City's dangerous defense flexed its muscle on the game's opening play when DL Bill Swancutt sailed untouched around the Stars offensive line and sacked McNown for a safety. Then, on the very next play from scrimmage, Zabransky found a wide open WR Dane Looker for a 45-yard bomb, giving the Roughnecks an early 9-0 lead.

Los Angeles made a change at quarterback to start the second half, inserting Ryan Dinwiddie into the lineup. Los Angeles finally got on the board thanks to an athletic 10-yard scramble by Dinwiddie. The Roughnecks defense stiffened and the Stars would get no closer.

-- (1-1)Roughnecks 31 - 14 Stars(1-1)

Tim Armstrong Signs on as XFL's Newest Owner, Touts League

March 7, 2008

Hartford, CT - Tim Armstrong along with Digital Sports & Entertainment LLC, a former executive at Google who is now the Chairman and CEO of AOL in his third trip to Hartford in recent weeks, is bringing an XFL franchise, the Colonials, to the city for the 2009 season. His first trip was to get a feel for the area and decide whether to become the principal owner for the newest XFL team. The second time was to meet with sponsors and local business people, and this trip was to hire the coaching staff. Chris Palmer, the former Cleveland Browns' head coach and assistant in the NFL, was introduced as the head coach with Keith Rowen and Rick Lantz serving as coordinators. Former New Orleans Saints' general manager Rick Mueller will serve that duty with the Colonials and the team will play their home games at Rentschler Field. "My expectation is not that we'll get 5,000, 10,000, or 15,000, but that we'll fill the stadium," Armstrong said. "I know we have that potential here in Hartford."

"There should be an alternative or a complementary league to the NFL in a lot of cities that are very big," Armstrong said. "This is a big metropolitan area. There's no reason that this area shouldn't have a serious professional football team. The XFL wanted to go from sixteen teams to twenty by 2010," he said, "and I believe in the XFL's cost-containment model, and that the league fills a competitive and talent void between college football and the NFL."

More than 100 XFL players have made NFL rosters over the league's existence, an indicator that a spring professional league has value for NFL teams as they enter the latter stages of their seasons. The XFL, he said, also provides a viable football option for cities and metropolitan areas that will never have the NFL, places such as Salt Lake City, San Antonio, Birmingham, Orlando and Hartford. "There are 20-25 cities in the U.S.," he said, "where we could provide a product that's probably 85 percent of the NFL for a fraction of the cost. There's no reason we shouldn't be successful."

Hartford is the newest expansion, but there are plans to add three more teams in the coming months. "The owners have known each other for a long time," Armstrong said. "I don't know if picky is the right word, but we just think we're careful of who we would have as part of our ownership group. We have to make sure to not outspend ourselves, and life is way too short to be in the business where you're not on the same page with your partners."

"Our plan is to play alongside the NFL," XFL commissioner Michael Huyghue said. "We're not out here trying to compete against the NFL. We're just trying to run a spring football league. We are not naïve enough to think our product is going to steal the thunder of the NFL, we want our fans to be watching the NFL in the fall and watching us in the spring."

XFL Week 4: Bandits Emerge as Elite

March 10, 2008

Tampa, FL - The XFL is only four games into it's eighth season but an elite team has emerged. The undefeated Tampa Bay Bandits and Memphis Express met Friday night, and it was the Bandits that came out with their unblemished record intact. They dominated the Express in a 37-9 victory. “I’m just disappointed,” Memphis coach Butch Davis said. “I thought we would play better than that. I really did. That’s not the kind of football we put on the field.”

Bandits' QB Gibran Hamdan passed for 215 yards and two touchdowns on 17 of 22 passing, while Express' QB Adrian McPherson struggled to find consistency early and finished 14-for-31 with 149 yards and two interceptions. “All I know is I dropped back and the couple of times I did have time, I didn’t come through for the team,” McPherson said. “I’ve got to make some throws.” The announced attendance of 32,160 didn’t appear to have as much fun as they did a week ago, when Memphis beat the New York Guardians 49-41. When the Express went down 22-0 in the third quarter, the fans started to boo. They were the most vocal on the next possession when McPherson threw an interception in the end zone.

Memphis didn’t even score until the beginning of the fourth quarter when RB Andrew Pinnock blocked a punt in the end zone for a safety to make the score 30-2. “I think you’re fighting for some respect at that juncture,” Davis said. “I hate that situation when there’s five, six, seven minutes to go in the game and for all intents and purpose, it’s impossible to come back. But you can’t stop trying to get your team to win.”

-- (1-1)Express 9 - 37 Bandits(3-0)
(MEM): QB McPherson - 14/31 149 yards, 2 INTs, RB Canidate - 18 carries, 42 yards, WR McCullough - 3 catches, 54 yards

XFL Week 4: Mountain Lions Overpower Enforcers

March 11, 2008

Chicago, IL - The Mountain Lions took a 6-0 lead after the first quarter and still led 22-7 at halftime. The Enforcers only score of the first half came early in the second quarter on a 14 yard touchdown pass from QB Joey Harrington to TE Tory Humphrey. The score gave Chicago a 7-6 lead but it was the only Enforcers lead of the contest. Salt Lake responded with a 43 yard strike from QB JT O'Sullivan to WR Paris Warren and another 43 yard scoring pass to WR Samie Parker.

The Enforcers tried to answer in the third quarter with their leading receiver Ruvell Martin. Martin was able to get behind the Mountain Lions secondary for touchdown catches from Harrington for 43 and 40 yards. The 40 yard score cut Salt Lake's lead to 29-21. But O'Sullivan went right back to work early in the fourth. He fired a four yard bullet to TE Quinn Sypniewski in the end zone to put the Mountain Lions up 36-21.

XFL Week 4: New York Keeps Orlando Winless

March 12, 2008

Orlando, FL - The game got off to a sloppy start with each team committing two turnovers in the first quarter. The Rage jumped out to a 14-0 lead after two WR Doug Gabriel receiving touchdowns, but the Guardians closed the gap to 14-13 by the half. Rage RB Onterrio Smith scored on a 5-yard run to open up scoring in the final quarter and give Orlando a 21-13 lead. The Guardians closed the gap to 21-20 with a touchdown run by RB Josh Scobey. With the lead, the Rage failed to convert a key fourth down with under a minute remaining in the game, giving New York the final possession. New York ran the clock down to 1.2 seconds as K Nick Novak kicked his game winning 35-yard field goal as time expired.

"The defense played well enough to win," said Rage head coach Jay Gruden. "This is a group of players that I don't think will get down. We just have to get that first win under our belt."

XFL Week 4: Valor Throttle Roughnecks

March 13, 2008

Washington, DC - Valor QB Shaun Hill completed 22-of-31 passes for 240 yards and five touchdowns as the Washington Valor controlled both sides of the ball in a lopsided 42-13 victory over the Oklahoma City Roughnecks in front of 31,689 fans. The Valor notched nine defensive stops in the game, including five straight in the first half. For Hill, he and the Valor were in control the entire game. "We showed great continuity on the offensive line," said Valor head coach Doug Williams. "The defensive line and the pass rush were phenomenal tonight."

The defensive line harassed Oklahoma City QB Brock Huard all night with six quarterback hurries and five sacks. Rookie LB Caleb Miller had a stand-out night, notching a sack, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and two pass breakups to go along with one of the quarterback hurries. DB Bruce Thornton notched nine tackles, 1 interception, two pass-breakups, and recovered a fumble. The Valor dominated the first half and led 25-3 at halftime. The offense scored on all five of its possessions in the first two quarters in addition to the defense's performance. This was the first time this season that the Valor scored on all of their first half possessions. The Roughnecks, meanwhile, did not score their first offensive touchdown until 40:01 into the game, in the waning minutes of the third quarter. "We have a lot of young guys, and we're starting to come together as a group," said Williams.

XFL Week 5: Ghosts Keep Undefeated Run Alive

March 17, 2008

Memphis, TN - The Columbus Ghosts kept their undefeated run through the XFL regular season alive tonight by defeating the Memphis Express 25-20 before 36,837 fans and will move to 5-0. RB Eric Shelton's 1-yard touchdown plunge with six minutes remaining in the game proved to be the game-winner, though the outcome remained uncertain with less than two minutes to play. The Express gave themselves one more chance to win the game when DL Demetrin Veal forced a fumble by Shelton and DL Claude Wroten recovered at the Columbus 47-yard line. After Express QB Adrian McPherson threw incomplete and then connected for 3 yards to WR Tyrone Calico, Memphis was faced with 3rd-and-7 from the Columbus 44 with 2 minutes remaining. Ghosts DL Antonio Smith then put the game away by sacking McPherson and forcing a fumble that he recovered at the Ghosts' 48-yard line.

Express head coach Butch Davis stated, "I think it was the third time this year we had a lead at halftime and couldn't score the sufficient number of points in the second half. The guys played hard, Columbus is an excellent team and we have our moments where we can do some things but too many mistakes and we got after them and made some turnovers. Trung Canidate was a little banged up and couldn't go so well but he is one of the top backs in the game so I hope he's able to come back next week."

-- (4-0)Ghosts 25 - 20 Express(1-2)

XFL Week 5: Roughnecks Top Commanders

March 18, 2008

San Antonio, TX - The Oklahoma City Roughnecks needed every inch of the field to survive the San Antonio Commanders as they took home a 30-25 victory in front of 32,107 fans. The final play saw Commanders QB Michael Bishop find WR Bethel Johnson for an 18-yard gain to Oklahoma City's 1-yard line as time expired. The call was very close, but the officials ruled Johnson out of bounds and the San Antonio players chased the officials off the field in protest, while the Roughnecks celebrated a much needed victory. "The defense played great the last three series of the game," Roughnecks head coach Dave Campo said. "We are still cleaning some things up but they did a great job."

Oklahoma City's previous drive started at their own 2-yard line with 2:56 remaining in the game. QB Brock Huard completed consecutive long passes to WR Adarius Bowman to move the Roughnecks up to the 23. On the next play Huard would find WR Dane Looker for a 23-yard touchdown pass with 22 seconds remaining to give the Roughnecks a 30-25 advantage. "The offensive line did a phenomenal job," said Campo. "I knew if we gave our quarterback time we would make great plays and except for the turnovers we did.

UFL puts 30% Offer on NFL's Table

March 19, 2008

New York, NY - The United Football League has been actively trying to convince the NFL to invest in the junior league in hopes of gaining a valuable senior partner, as well as other investors, according to sources. However, the latest proposal -- which would give the NFL a 30 percent stake in the UFL, is not on the agenda for discussion during the NFL owners' meetings, which run Sunday through Wednesday in Orlando, Fla. The UFL has proposed that in addition to the 30 percent investment, of which the specific dollar amount was not revealed by sources, the NFL will have at least one seat on the UFL's board and a role in the football operations. Sources disagree on whether a deal is likely.

The UFL is hopeful that a potential partnership with the NFL will bolster its ongoing efforts to add investors as it attempts to expand from six to eight or ten teams for the 2009 season. The proposed partnership also potentially would provide additional programming for the league-owned NFL Network, which would broadcast some UFL games, sources said. If there ever was a partnership, the NFL would likely use the UFL as a training ground for on-field game officials and possibly experiment with a variety of competitive concepts, a source added, such as it did with NFL Europe, which shut down operations in 2001. A league source reiterated that the proposals being discussed have been generated by the UFL and have not been warmly embraced yet. The UFL has its league meeting, also in Orlando, April 21-23. The NFL also has another owners' meeting in Dallas in May.

Halifax Highlanders Join the CFL

March 22, 2008

Toronto, ONTARIO, CANADA - The 2008 season would be the first season of the Halifax Highlanders owned by William Palmer and coached by John Fontes, the proposed UFL Michigan Panthers head coach, bringing the CFL back to ten teams. The CFL also granted a conditional franchise, slated to begin play in 2010, to an Ottawa-based group led by Jeff Hunt, owner of the Ontario Hockey League's Ottawa 67's, under the condition that the group could secure a lease agreement with the City of Ottawa to allow the team to play at Frank Clair Stadium. The franchise was based on the remnants of the Ottawa Renegades, but was to be a separate team.

XFL Week 6: Bandits Remain Perfect

March 24, 2008

Tampa, FL - The Tampa Bay Bandits remained undefeated after tonight's 37-10 win over the struggling San Antonio Commanders. With 35,201 in attendance, the Bandits overpowered the Commanders while keeping alive their hopes for a perfect season. The Bandits kicked off the second half with a key 26-yard pass to WR Reche Caldwell and then the Bandits' running game took over the rest of the drive before RB Avon Cobourne finished it with a three-yard run to put Tampa up 27-10 with 8:15 left in the third quarter. Needing a spark, the Commanders again gambled on two fourth down plays. After WR Bethel Johnson's terrific 27-yard grab got them to their own 44, QB Michael Bishop converted on fourth and one with a four-yard keeper. Three plays later, RB Brandon Miree converted the second fourth-down try before the Bandits stiffened and forced the Commanders into a failed 47-yard field goal attempt. San Antonio never threatened again. After Tampa drove down the field and scored on a QB Gibran Hamdan pass to WR DeAndrew Rubin, QB Timmy Chang was sent in to finish the game. Hamdan finished 16 of 23 for 260 yards and four touchdowns.

Bandits' head coach Steve Spurrier said about his team after the impressive win, "They are having fun. It feels like when I played in the early eighties. Guys hung out and did things together. That's what the feeling is. Somehow, if you could take this feeling and bring it back to the National Football League, I think football would be a lot more fun for people. This league has been great. Everyone out there has something to prove. You have guys out here with so many situations. Guys that got in trouble and guys that trying to resurrect their careers."

XFL Week 6: Roughnecks Offense Slowed to Halt

March 25, 2008

Oklahoma City, OK - Oklahoma City Roughnecks' up-and-down season continued tonight, as they failed to score a first-half point before eventually falling to the Omaha Mammoths, 27-6. Roughnecks QB Brock Huard threw three first-half interceptions and fumbled once more while Omaha LB Patrick Chukwurah began a monstrous night on the opening drive, intercepting Huard to set up the first Mammoth touchdown reception by WR Herb Haygood. On Oklahoma City's very next possession, Chukwurah tipped another Huard pass attempt high into the air, where it fell into the waiting hands of DB Eric Crouch. WR CJ Jones' touchdown grab then extended the home team's lead to 14-0. Chukwurah continued its defensive dominance on the next drive when he sacked Huard and forced a fumble. Ryne Robinson's 16-yard reception from QB Brad Banks gave the Mammoths a 21-0 lead at the half. The Roughnecks offense continued to struggle after the half, failing to score on two trips inside the red zone.

"The fact that we were able to capitalize on the defensive turnovers was very encouraging," said Mammoths head coach Frank Solich. "Everybody did their one-eleventh and made the plays that we needed to make. We're expecting Patrick Chukwurah to do his part. If an opportunity arises, he's supposed to make those plays because that's what he's here for. I expect that from all of our players. When you're number is called, you have to perform."

"I'm just happy to get the win," Chukwurah said. "The first half we really exploded offensively and defensively and when it comes together like that, it's going to be a huge day."

"We all had a heavy ball possession conscious week," said RB Ron Dayne. "I was able to make plays with the opportunities, but give full credit to our Offensive line."

XFL Week 6: Guardians Tame Enforcers

March 26, 2008

Chicago, IL - The Enforcers took the opening kickoff and marched down the field to take a 7-0 lead via a four-yard touchdown pass from QB Kurt Kittner to WR David Givens but New York answered right back with QB Chris Redman lofting a perfect spiral to a wide open WR Jerome Mathis for a 47-yard touchdown to knot the game at 7-7 midway through the first quarter. The Guardians kept Chicago out of the end zone the rest of the first half with the visitors having to settle for an 18-yard K Shane Andrus field goal on the first play of the second quarter as their only other points. Guardians LB Isaiah Kacyvenski got in on the act for the defense, snaring a Kittner attempt and shedding a would-be tackler as he raced 32 yards with the interception to pay dirt and a 14-10 lead. The defense forced another empty possession for the Enforcers with DB Randee Drew stopping Givens just shy of the first down marker on a fourth down pass.

Taking the second half kickoff and methodically marching down the field, the Ghosts extended their lead to 11 points at 21-10 as RB Josh Scobey capped a six-minute drive with a three-yard touchdown run. The New York defense picked up in the second half where they left off as DL Kenechi Udeze hurried Kittner into a bad throw that LB Raheem Orr turned into a diving interception after the ball bounded off of a receiver's hands. Making the Enforcers pay the price for another turnover, Redman hit WR Troy Walters on an eight-yard touchdown pass to push the lead to 28-10. The Enforcers were able to finally stop the Guardians' run of 21 unanswered points on their next possession when Kittner and WR Marquis Walker connected on a three-yard touchdown toss on fourth down, making the score 28-17 at the end of three quarters. After an unsuccessful onside kick, the Guardians scored again when Scobey ran around the left for a two-yard touchdown run and a 35-17 lead early in the final period. Guardians head coach Jim Fassel put backup QB Spergon Wynn into the game late in the fourth quarter to give the veteran some action and Wynn launched a long ball down the field that WR Darnerien McCants ran under for a 45-yard touchdown and a 42-17 New York lead.

"They're a good team," said Enforcers head coach Mike Singletary. "We didn't do what we needed to do on offense or on defense. We did not play well offensively. But that is something we will get corrected. We just need to execute and catch the ball. You have to give New York respect. They can get up the field and their defense rushes the passer well and is very good at creating turnovers."

XFL Week 6: Ghosts Escape Valor

March 27, 2008

Washington, DC - The Ghosts took the lead for good in the first quarter, when DL Antonio Smith sacked Washington QB Shaun Hill in the end zone for a safety to break a 0-0 tie. The Ghosts took the ensuing possession 45 yards for a touchdown to grab a nine-point lead and never trailed the rest of the way. Both teams exchanged two scores a piece in the second half, but it wasn't enough as Columbus came out on top, 23-17.

"Compared to last week, this was a night and day difference in terms of energy," said Valor head coach Doug Williams. "I am very pleased with the effort put forth tonight. If we keep playing like this, we will win plenty of games this year."

ESPN Agrees To Broadcast New UFL

March 28, 2008

New York, NY - The UFL and ESPN have signed an agreement that will obligate ESPN to broadcast the UFL's inaugural season on the ESPN3 network. The deal will provide the UFL national coverage on ESPN, which serves as ESPN's live multi-screen sports network on the Internet. UFL Founder Cedric Dempsey says that the arrangement with ESPN is a welcome addition to the existing relationships that the UFL has cultivated with regional networks and remains optimistic that the UFL will land a few more partners before the inaugural season kicks off next month. The UFL wishes to become a true developmental platform for players, coaches and prospective NFL referees. Opportunities are few and far between for NFL franchises to develop young players that cannot make the cut onto a 53-man roster or practice squad. The current UFL membership is comprised of six teams playing a five-week schedule during the months of April and May. ESPN3 has agreed to carry five regular season games as well as the May 26th championship match-up.

"We have kept an open line of communications with the NFL and I definitely think there are interests on their end," Dempsey said who has spoken to NFL executives throughout the formative process of the UFL. "The long-term goal of this league is to establish an official relationship or be recognized by the NFL as its official developmental league. ESPN has a very close tie-in with the NFL and I think many people including John Clayton, Mike Golic and others have really shown me their support on this. Having an affiliation with ESPN is something that is going to enhance us with our efforts to build that bridge into the NFL. There needs to be a minor league in football. Not a competing league, not one that plays a different kind of football, one that essentially is a feeder league to the NFL."
