XFL Week 2: Failed Onside Kick Finishes Guardians

March 9, 2010

Columbus, OH - In reply to the Guardian field goal, the Ghosts struck back quickly and asserted their dominance for the rest of the half. On the drive's first play from scrimmage, RB Antonio Pittman made a statement with an 83-yard run down the right sideline for the 7-3 lead. After the Guardians missed a 43-yard field goal, Columbus went on a 9-play, 66-yard drive capped by Pittman's 11-yard touchdown run up the middle to open the lead to 14-3. The Ghosts added a 21-yard field goal just before the first half expired and went into the locker room holding a 14-point advantage.

The Guardians scored to open the second half, when former NFL stand out QB Jeff Garcia found WR Limas Sweed for a 17 yard score capping an impressive 69-yard drive to cut the lead to 17-10. But the Ghosts continued to move the ball on New York's defense, and added a 26-yard field goal to push it back to a two-score game, 20-10 at the start of the fourth quarter. After the Ghosts had to settle for another field goal to increase the advantage to 23-10 with just under seven minutes to play. New York found the end zone for seven again on Garcia's pass to TE Doug Jolley with less than two minutes on the clock to slash the lead to six points, but the specials teams unit fielded the onside kick before the ball traveled 10 yards, giving the ball back to the Ghosts to seal the win.

UFL Players Agree to Salary Cut to Help League

March 12, 2010

New York, NY - Ahmad Hawkins, union representative for the Florida Blacktips, said Wednesday the United Football League Players Association has agreed to major financial concessions if it'll help keep the league from suspending operations for the upcoming season. He said the union conducted a conference call Friday in which the players voted to cut the salary cap for the 2010 season from $1.6 million to $1.1 million in an effort to keep their jobs. "I'm one of the top-paid guys and I was the first one to say I'd take a pay cut," said Hawkins, a standout defensive back who earned $35,000 last season. "We agreed to take the salary cap lower. The players want to do anything we can to play this season."

A few renegade owners, however, are leading the charge to call it quits, Hawkins said. If the players want to play, what can be done instead of just shutting it down?," Hawkins wondered. "I think it would diminish the value of some teams and the league if we didn't play this season. I think it would be tough to continue. We're fragmented right now."

Philadelphia in Mix to Host XFL Championship Game

March 18, 2010

Philadelphia, PA - The city of Philadelphia and Brawlers fans have teamed together in an effort to bring the 2010 XFL Veterans Bowl to Carson Field in Philadelphia. The combination of fan support, attendance, social media integration and each team's record, which decided the venue for the 2009 finale, will influence where the 2010 championship will be played. Fans can vote on the XFL official page on Facebook. Philadelphia holds a lead in the voting. "This strategy was popular with our fans last season, so we will again allow them to help us determine where to play our showpiece event," said XFL commissioner Michael Huyghue.

"I think it would be a perfect culmination to the rollercoaster ride we have had so far," Brawlers' general manager Ron Jaworski said. "It would be the sweetest reward to have the championship here in front of the best fans. It would be a great opportunity for Philadelphia to showcase what we can support in terms of professional sports."

XFL Week 4: Ghosts Fall from the Undefeated

March 23, 2010

Philadelphia, PA - QB Chris Redman hit WR David Givens on a 33-yard touchdown pass with 37 seconds remaining to lead the Philadelphia Brawlers to a 15-9 win over the Columbus Ghosts. It was the first regular season loss for the Ghosts. With the score, 7-6, the Ghosts took over on their own 24 and drove the ball 75-yards down to the 1-yard line. But three plays netted a -11 yards and the Ghosts were forced to settle for a 30-yard field goal to take a 9-7 lead. "We had our chances and didn't take advantage of it," Ghosts head coach Kippy Brown said. "We all had a hand in this one and now we have to rebound from it and get ready to play Ottawa in a very short week."

The defenses had control of the game before the Brawlers drove the length of the field to take a 7-3 lead. Redman capped a 12-play, 86-yard drive with a 4-yard scoring pass to Givens at the 8:56 mark of the second quarter. The touchdown drive was aided by a 4th down roughing the kicker penalty that extended the drive. Columbus had a chance to take the lead late in the third quarter, but on a fourth and one play from the Philadelphia 16-yard line, RB Eric Shelton was stuffed for no gain. The play would factor into the final score as they made it 7-6 at the 14:48 mark.

Ottawa Axemen CFL Debut Pushed Back

March 25, 2010

Ottawa, ONTARIO, CANADA - The team planned to begin play in 2010, but cracks in the concrete structure in the south stands of Frank Clair Stadium led to the demolition of those stands and delayed the start of team operations. The team and league then announced plans to play at a remodeled Frank Clair Stadium, called TD Place Stadium, by 2014 if construction remained on schedule.

The Ottawa Force would now be forced to play the rest of their 2010 regular season home games on the road. Owner Bernie Gleiberman and Gleiberman Sports & Entertainment LLC would be looking for hosting alternative options for the 2011 season.

XFL Week 5: Enforcers Win on Last Play Of Game

March 30, 2010

Salt Lake City, UT - One of the largest crowds in XFL history turned out in Salt Lake City on Friday night to celebrate one of the young league's most spectacular games as Chicago QB Joey Harrington threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to WR Ruvell Martin on fourth down with six seconds to play to give the Enforcers a 51-45 win over the Salt Lake City Mountain Lions in the the pulse-pounding ball game. The Enforcers comeback started early in the fourth. Harrington led a 14-play drive but Chicago settled for a 24-yard field goal to make it 42-37 with 6:40 remaining. After Salt Lake went three-and-out on its next possession, Harrington's 2-yard touchdown pass to TE Tory Humphrey brought the Enforcers to a 44-42 lead on a drive extended by a pair of costly Salt Lake penalties. LB Marcus Reese was flagged for a personal foul after the Mountain Lions broke up Harrington's third-down pass. Five plays later, Harrington threw up a desperation pass under pressure from the Salt Lake 7-yard-line that was intercepted by DL Dave Tollefson. But DL Montavious Stanley was flagged for roughing the passer, giving Chicago first-and-goal at the 3. "I thought our team lost their poise a time or two that resulted in penalties," Salt Lake coach Dennis Erickson said. "When you do that against a good team like Chicago, they're going to hurt you."

QB JT O'Sullivan had the Salt Lake offense sharp from the start. He coolly took the Mountain Lions 82 yards in 10 plays to open the game and connected with WR Paris Warren on a 14-yard touchdown pass to put the Mountain Lions up 7-0 with 9:51 to play in the first quarter. But the Enforcers answered on their first possession of the game before O'Sullivan lofted a 6-yard touchdown pass to WR Freddie Mitchell in the corner of the end zone to put the Mountain Lions up 14-7. Chicago then ate up more than six minutes on an 11-play drive that tied the game with RB Noah Herron scoring on 4th-and-1. O'Sullivan then hit three straight passes to move the Mountain Lions to the Chicago 35 with 13 seconds left before lifting a perfect strike down the sideline to Mitchell for a 35-yard touchdown on the final play of the half to put Salt Lake up 21-10 at the half.

CFL and XFL Turn Down a UFL Merger

April 1, 2010

Toronto, ONTARIO, CANADA - In August, expected news came when the founders of the United Football League announced their intentions to shut down the UFL and pursue a merger with the CFL or XFL. Reaction from the CFL with respect to the UFL's intentions was mixed, however, with league head office iterating a reluctance to continue US expansion while Montreal Alouettes owner, Robert Wetenhall, welcoming the concept of bids involving border regions. The CFL will be expanding to 11 teams for the 2010 season with the addition of a franchise in Quebec City and then to 12 teams with a return to Ottawa, so the UFL proposal is unlikely. The XFL said they were not interested in working with the UFL.

XFL Week 6: Omaha Struggles Continues

April 6, 2010

Omaha, NE - The Conquerors opened the scoring with a 24-yard field goal with 1:03 left in the first quarter, capping a 74-yard, 10-play drive. QB JP Losman completed 4 of 5 passes for 77 yards on the series, including a 47-yarder to WR Andrae Thurman on third and 16 at the Las Vegas 14. The Conquerors increased the lead to 6-0 early in the second quarter on a 34-yard field goal that followed an interception by DB Isaiah Trufant of a deflected QB Brad Banks pass that he returned to the 17-yard line. K Graham Gano's third field goal was a 45-yarder with 3:51 remaining before intermission that made it 9-0. That capped a 67-yard, 15-play drive that began on the Las Vegas 9. Las Vegas extended its lead to 16-0 early in the third quarter when Losman hit TE Jeb Putzier slicing across the middle with a 15-yard touchdown pass. Losman was 3 of 3 for 40 yards on the 52-yard, 8-play drive. Omaha finally got on the scoreboard with a 43-yard field goal with 4:00 to go in the third quarter. That capped a 63-yard, 11-play march that included a 20-yard run by RB Chris Perry. The Conquerors increased their lead to 22-3 midway through the fourth quarter on a 6-yard sweep around right end by RB Terrence Whitehead. The 68-yard, 7-play drive was highlighted by a 44-yard completion from Losman to WR Koren Robinson up the left sideline. Omaha finally found the end zone with 4:40 to go when Banks scrambled to his right and lobbed a 21-yard touchdown pass to WR Antonio Chatman but had left their comeback too late. After Las Vegas recovered the ensuing onside kick, RB DeDe Dorsey concluded the night's scoring with a 18-yard touchdown run with 2:10 remaining.

XFL Week 7: The PAT was the Key

April 13, 2010

Tampa Bay, FL - Tampa Bay got off to an amazing start as QB Gibran Hamdan hit WR Doug Gabriel twice for scores in the first half. Hamdan would finish the day with only 128 yards passing, but three scores, as the Bandit offense relied on a three-headed run game to confuse New York’s defense. RB Avon Cobourne rushed 16 times for 68 yards and got huge assists from RB Sedrick Irvin and RB Michael Pittman(4 carries for 56 yards). Down 14-0 early, New York rallied with two field goals to go in down by 8 at the half. Tampa boosted the lead to 15 in the 3rd thanks to a Hamdan to TE George Wrighster touchdown toss, but New York had a rally in them.

The Guardians scored late in the 3rd, a Marcus Maxwell touchdown, which brought them again back to within 8 at 21-13. After a missed field goal on their next drive, New York needed a 2-minute drill, complete with a 2-point conversion to get them to a tie as time wound down. RB Dominic Rhodes took over in the final 2 minutes, touching the ball 6 times on a 9 play drive. He would finish the day as the leading rusher and leading receiver with 105 on the ground and another 82 yards in the air, including a brilliant 44 yard gain on the final drive on a simple screen pass. New York got the touchdown they needed when QB Jeff Garcia found TE Doug Jolley in the back of the end zone, but it would come down to a successful PAT to tie the game and send it to overtime in front of a feverish 57,200. Garcia faked a quick slant and handed to Rhodes on a draw, but when LB Odell Thurman clipped Rhodes’ ankles behind the line of scrimmage, the PAT failed and the Bandits only had to successfully receive the onside kick and take a knee to end the game.

XFL Week 8: Ghosts Edge Enforcers

April 20, 2010

Columbus, OH - The Enforcers took an early lead by capitalizing on a blocked punt on Columbus' first offensive series and returned the ball to the five-yard line. The Enforcers' offense, led by QB Joey Harrington, was unable to gain any positive yardage on three plays before settling for a 23-yard field goal. Chicago had a chance to extend its lead early in the second quarter but instead of kicking a 30-yard field goal, the Enforcers faked the kick but failed to convert the attempt into a first down and turned the ball over on downs. Columbus completed a 44-yard pass on its first play after taking over possession but the Enforcers' defense recovered to force a punt. DB Stuart Schweigert led a strong defensive effort by the Enforcers with an interception in the second quarter that led to their second field goal, this time a 25-yarder that put the Chicago up 6-0 with 4:30 remaining in the first half. The Ghosts were able to get on the scoreboard as the first half ended on the strength of a 53-yard field goal to make the score 6-3 in favor of the Enforcers, who should have enjoyed more of an advantage at the interval.

Columbus found the end zone on their first possession of the second half when RB Antonio Pittman reached scored on a 10-yard run with 7:31 left in the third quarter earn a 10-6 lead. On Chicago's ensuing possession, they drove the ball to the Ghosts' 23-yard line but the usually reliable K Nick Novak missed his 40-yard field goal attempt. Chicago had another opportunity to score as they drove to the Columbus 9-yard line before Harrington threw an interception to DB DeAngelo Smith. Columbus extended their lead to 13-6 on a 32-yard field goal by K Matt Bryant with 5:45 left to play after a third down and one situation at the 15-yard line when the Chicago defense was able to hold. Within one possession of being able to tie the game, Chicago was unable to take advantage of their defensive effort despite reaching the 33-yard line with less than a minute left in the game. Harrington's desperation pass on fourth down fell incomplete and the Ghosts took over, taking a knee to preserve a 13-6 victory.

Roughnecks Make Unprecedented Move in Oklahoma City

April 23, 2010

Oklahoma City, OK - In an effort to share the excitement of the XFL, the Oklahoma City Roughnecks will be distributing 5,000 free ticket vouchers at various business locations throughout the city for the April 26th home game against the Chicago Enforcers. "Even if the Roughnecks don't win the game, it's the most exciting entertainment in town," said Jason Coffel, Director of Operations, whose goal is to have a crowd of over 50,000 in attendance at the game. He continued, "There is nothing in this town that can hold a candle to an XFL game; the excitement, the action, the adrenaline, and all for less than the cost of a night at the movies."

XFL Week 9: San Antonio's Defense Takes Command

April 27, 2010

Las Vegas, NV - QB Michael Bishop had a solid, workmanlike, game, throwing for 186 yards and a score while avoiding negative plays. He was helped by a defense that kept Las Vegas in check for most of the day. While the Conquerors outgained the Commanders 321-186, they could not capitalize against San Antonio’s bend-but-don’t-break defensive stance. The biggest play of the game was one of the first as Las Vegas received the opening kickoff and on 2nd and 9 QB JP Losman faked to RB DeDe Dorsey and tried to hit WR Johnnie Lee Higgins on a deep ball. Higgins was well covered by San Antonio’s league leading interception specialist, DB Joselio Hanson, and Hanson made Losman pay, snagging the ball in stride and turning it back against Las Vegas. Hanson would weave the 51 yards to the end zone, setting San Antonio up with a 7-0 lead after less than 1 minute of play.

Las Vegas’ next drive would not start off any better. A muff by the return man left the Conquerors on the 7 yard line, and a false start on their first play from scrimmage in the drive left them with 1st and 13 on the 3½ yard line. After a Dorsey run went nowhere, Losman went for play action on 2nd down, only to find himself in the grasp of San Antonio’s DL Bo Schobel. 5-0 San Antonio and their offense had not even seen the ball yet. Las Vegas would pull back into the game, scoring on an Losman to WR Koren Robinson pass as the first half ran down. With San Antonio’s offense only putting together one solid first half field goal drive, Las Vegas only trailed 12-7 despite their early mistakes. In the 3rd quarter neither team found much success, so it was surprising to see 24 points scored in the final period.

Las Vegas started it off, with Robinson catching his second touchdown on the day. When the 2-point conversion failed, the Conquerors would have to settle for a 13-12 lead. San Antonio quickly wiped that short-lived lead away, scoring on the next drive as RB LaBrandon Toefield finished off a 12-play drive with a 2-yard scoring run. 5:45 left to play and San Antonio was back on top 18-13. Las Vegas came right back, finding more success through the air, with TE Jeb Putzier scoring on a short pass play to give them the lead once again and again they went for 2 and again they failed, a miss that would play large when it was all said and done. With only 1:40 left, San Antonio would have one more drive, down only one. They would cash in 80 seconds later, when K Ryan Plackemeier connected from 54 yards out.

XFL Week 10: Another Crazy Finish

May 4, 2010

Hartford, CT - The game started fast from the opening whistle, as Ottawa made a statement with a rapid fire 4-play, 77 yard drive, culminating in laser of a pass from QB Brock Huard to WR Reche Caldwell for a 19-yard score. Ottawa never even saw 2nd down on the drive, picking up big chunks through the air on each play as their initial scripted plays just fileted the Hartford defense. The Colonials would respond, though not quite as quickly, but their 11-play drive yielded equal results as they drove down to the 7, where QB Brooks Bollinger found WR Taye Biddle on a fade route for an equalizing score. They doubled down to take a 14-7 lead after a tipped ball led to a Huard interception. Hartford capitalized as the Colonials got the first of four rushing touchdowns with a 19-yard run by RB Wali Lundy along the sideline on a perfectly executed pitch out play. Ottawa would answer with a field goal after a controversial offensive pass interference call against negated an apparent touchdown. On replay it was clear that Caldwell pushed off of the defender to create space and Ottawa settled for a field goal, a capitulation which would come back to haunt them by the game’s end.

Hartford took no time to come back, going on their own quick strike attack and in five plays they were back in the end zone, a 3rd and 2 run by RB Andre Dixon off right tackle that broke through the initial defense and went for 25. The score gave Hartford a 21-10 lead, but there was still time in the half for Huard and the Force to draw closer. They did just that with Huard hitting WR Marcus Monk for an undisputed score with just under a minute left in the half. The two teams would go to the intermission knowing they had a battle on their hands and Hartford up 21-17. The second half looked like it would be all Ottawa, as halftime adjustments allowed the Force to race out to 14 3rd quarter points and a 31-21 lead. After a short drive by Hartford to open the half stalled, leading to a punt to the Ottawa 31, the Force again struck quickly, 6 plays and only 1:22 off the clock and Huard found WR Dane Looker on a 17-yard scoring toss. After a Dixon fumble on the next drive for Hartford gave Ottawa great field position, Huard struck again, this time hitting WR Mike Hass on a play action bomb on the first play from scrimmage. But, despite the quick strikes of the Force, Hartford was not discouraged and maintained their balanced attack. Starting a drive with just under a minute to go in the 3rd, Hartford burnt up 8:30 and RB Quentin Griffin found the end zone, this time on a 1 yard plunge on 2nd and goal. Back to within 3, the game was far from over.

Ottawa’s first drive of the 4th was thwarted by a 3rd down holding call, which led to a 3rd and 17 that the Force failed to covert. Hartford was equally ineffective on their next drive, with Bollinger missing on an out route to Biddle on 3rd and 7. Ottawa would get the ball back and after gaining two first downs, one by penalty and one on a draw play on 3rd and 4, the Colonials got a stroke of luck. On a 2nd and 7, Huard did not see LB Matt Sinclair coming on his blindside. The speedy linebacker clipped Huard just as he released the ball, causing it to flutter in the air, well short of his intended receiver and into the arms of DB TJ Wright. The Colonials would not let this opportunity pass them by and burning clock as they moved down the field, they again entrusted the ball to their strong running game within the 5 yard line. RB Dahrran Diedrick fell short of the goal line on 1st and goal, but used a well-seen cutback to find a gap in the line on 2nd and goal from the 2, sliding into the end zone and giving Hartford the lead once again, 35-31. But with just over 2 minutes left, and with two time outs left in their pocket, the Force had time to regain the lead before the game would end. Ottawa started strong, with Huard hitting RB Justin Fargas on a 13 yard screen to open the drive. He then hit TE Mikhael Ricks for 7. Fargas got stuffed by the defense on 2nd down, but Ottawa seemed to have converted on 3rd and 3 when Caldwell caught a slant over the middle, but there was a flag on the field. Holding was the call and on 3rd and 13 Huard could not connect with Hass, setting up a 4th and 13 that the Force had to go for. Huard looked for Caldwell again, but DB Ronnie Prude was there to get a hand between the ball and Caldwell’s awaiting hands. Turnover on downs with just over 1 minute to play. Bollinger took a knee and ended the game.

XFL Week 11: Vick Finding Groove on Ground

May 11, 2010

Washington, DC - The Valor took an early lead when QB Mike Vick completed six straight passes and ran a half-dozen times, capping the drive with an 8-yard touchdown run. Memphis answered in the second quarter on a 23-yard touchdown run from RB Trung Canidate with just under five minutes left in the half. After a bad snap on the extra point attempt, K Rob Bironas hit the crossbar, leaving the Valor with a 7-6 lead. After Valor RB Kevin Jones fumbled, Memphis missed a key opportunity to take a lead in the third quarter when QB Patrick Ramsey drove the Express inside the 10-yard line, only to have Bironas' Field Goal blocked. After that blocked kick, the Valor took over on their own 20-yard line, and Vick moved them up the field, completing five passes on the drive and scrambling up the middle for a 9-yard gain deep in Memphis territory. On the first play of the fourth quarter, Vick rolled to his right and scrambled for a 14-yard touchdown and a 14-6 lead. Vick added to the lead less than five minutes later with a 25-yard touchdown run that he broke open by neutralizing a defender with a juke at the 20. RB Lee Suggs capped the night with a 13-yard run around the left end for clinching touchdown, putting the Valor ahead 28-6 with 3:13 left.
