XFL Week 12: Schottenheimer Calls Out Offensive Coordinator

May 18, 2010

Birmingham, AL - Valor QB Mike Vick rushed for 209 yards on Friday night while passing for 130 yards, but he was more interested in a different number, nine, as in the Washington Valor's winning streak since starting the year 0-3. "It wouldn't matter how many yards I rushed for, as long as we keep winning," Vick said. "It's an awesome feeling. We just go out there with the same game plan and if we play our game, nobody can stop us." The Valor took an early lead with a methodical 12-play, 81-yard drive that ate up almost eight minutes of clock in the first quarter and resulted with a RB Kevin Jones' 8 yard touchdown run while the Steel were hurt by a pair of turnovers in the first quarter on what started out as big plays. LB Brian Toal intercepted a pass and ran it back 20 yards before Jones busted off a run that ended when Steel DB Simeon Castille punched the ball out of his grasp and the loose ball rolled more than 30 yards into the end zone that Valor OL Elton Brown jumped on for another score. QB Quincy Carter also threw two interceptions in the first half, totaling four turnovers in the game. "Those are what I call self-inflicted wounds," Steel head coach Marty Schottenheimer said. "We take pride in avoiding them, but tonight that other team played hard and made some things happen." Jones capped his explosive night with a 33-yard run around the left end for his third touchdown, putting the Valor ahead 28-0 at the half.

"The thing about our business is, it's really very simple," Schottenheimer said. "You find out what your people can do, and then you do that. You don't try to put square pegs into round holes to see if that's something that might work. We didn't have a good rhythm in the first half, but to our players' credit they met that challenge when we came back out," he said. "We didn't change a lot in what we do, there's only so many ways you can run the ball up the middle."

XFL Week 13: Chutes and Ladders as Playoffs Loom

May 25, 2010

Oklahoma City, OK - These two clubs would play hard-nosed smash mouth football all game, with both defenses holding their own and both offenses seeking to avoid costly turnovers. Both would, as there were no takeaways for either defense the entire game. With both teams playing somewhat conservatively the biggest issue turned out to be penalties, with Oklahoma City called for eight on the day while Philadelphia had only 2 flags thrown. The game began slowly, with a 46 yard Roughneck field goal being the only score of the first quarter. In the second, Philadelphia would get on the board as an 11-play, 7-minute drive led to a RB Josh Scobey touchdown run. Oklahoma City answered with a long drive of their own, capped off by a short touchdown pass to WR Adarius Bowman. Bowman would finish the day with 8 receptions for 117 yards, far and away the top receiver for the Roughnecks. QB Chris Redman would spread the ball around a bit more, finding seven different receivers on the day, with WR Paul Williams leading the pack, and making the big play late in the game.

Down 10-7 at the half, Philadelphia came out in the 3rd and equalized on a 33-yarder from K Rhys Lloyd. But, for most of the remainder of the half it was the defenses that ruled the day. Philadelphia would go 0-3 on their next three third down attempts, Oklahoma City fared slightly better, going 1 for 4 on first downs and adding two field goals over the course of the next 20 minutes. Up 16-10, it would fall on the Roughneck defense to keep Philadelphia from a late touchdown to steal the win. After a nice punt, Philadelphia would start on their own 13 with just over 1:21 left to play and needing a touchdown to win. Redman found WRs Reggie Brown and Paul Williams on consecutive plays to reach their own 40. After an incompletion to WR David Givens, they surprised Oklahoma City with a draw and RB Ryan Moats gained 8, creating a 3rd and 2 at the 48. Redman hit TE Adam Bergen on a hook pattern to get the first down and stopped the clock with 43 seconds to play on the 45. With Oklahoma City now playing a soft zone, Philadelphia pulled out a trick play to open things up and it went even better than anticipated. Brown ran a 10-yard hook, while Williams ran a crossing route. When Redman hit Brown the defenders turned his direction to get the stop in the field of play. Just as they reached him, Brown tossed the ball back to the crossing Williams, who, already at full speed, took the ball to the sideline and turned up field, with a clear path to the end zone. It was a perfectly executed hook & ladder play, and it caught the over-zealous defenders flat-footed. The deep safety had converged and was unable to change direction quickly enough to get an angle on Williams as he sped upfield putting them up 17-16. It was a brilliant play call made at exactly the right time and it gave Philadelphia a much-needed win.

Garcia, Culpepper Focused on Present Leading Up to XFL Matchup

May 29, 2010

Orlando, FL - They are two quarterbacks who have shown at times to be able to play the position at an elite level, yet they're two quarterbacks for whom the NFL no longer had a use, long before their bodies were ready to quit. Fortunately for Jeff Garcia and Daunte Culpepper, they still have a place to play professional football. They don't play on Sundays, and their games aren't watched by millions of fans, but they're still playing football. It may sound a bit hokey, but Garcia doesn't care. "We all love to play," Garcia said Thursday. "It's different, in the sense that it's not a situation where we're going to get rich or we're going to prepare our future with the salaries that we're making, but that's not a concern with the players that are here. Their concern is getting on the field and having the opportunity to compete and play."

Garcia will be lining up for the New York Guardians on Saturday night, opposed by Culpepper and the Orlando Rage. "Both Daunte and Jeff have shown throughout their pro football careers that they are not only superb athletes, but true leaders," XFL commissioner Michael Huyghue said in the league's announcement. "There is a lot of gas left in these tanks."

It's clear, though, that Garcia and Culpepper aren't thinking about the NFL, not now at least. If they do indeed want to get back there, they know that the journey starts with focusing on the task at hand.

XFL Week 14: Surprising Stampede Rises to the Top

June 1, 2010

Salt Lake City, UT - Salt Lake had let them back into the game, and the Stampede would not go away in the second half. A relatively quiet 3rd quarter left Houston up 20-16 thanks to RB Ron Dayne’s 2 yard run. The Stampede have started to sub their big back in as a rusher from time to time, and the big man proved he can still tote the rock, pounding the ball between the tackles and spelling starting running back Marcel Shipp. The 4th quarter began with Salt Lake retaking the lead on a TE Teyo Johnson touchdown reception. Johnson can find holes in the defense and exploit them as he did on this pass that garnered a score for the Mountain Lions. But, Houston was tenacious and on their next possession they went back to WR Robert Ferguson for a 2nd score and again retook the lead 27-23. Salt Lake was forced to kick a field goal on their next drive to pull within 1 at 27-26 and their defense helped the cause, producing a quick 3-and-out by the Stampede. The Mountain Lions would put another three on the board and with only 39 seconds left in the game you could see celebration on their sidelines.

Down 29-27 with only 39 seconds, Houston took the touchback on the kickoff. QB Josh McCown mustered some magic, hitting WR Bobby Sippio for 10 on his first play, then, after a timeout, he fond WR Brandon Jones for 15, and again called timeout. Salt Lake had left the middle of the field open, assuming Houston would play to the sidelines, but they used their two time outs to quickly gain 25 yards and then shift gears. On 1st and 10 from the 49, McCown again found an open receiver, this time it was Ferguson again, and when the corner whiffed on the tackle, he was able to gain another 5 yards, for a total of 14, and a first down on the 34. With time ticking away, McCown rushed the team up to the line of scrimmage and spiked the ball with only 11 seconds left on the clock. Out came K Steve Hauschka, and, after an icing timeout, Hauschka lined up the 51 yard field goal, took his swing and the ball sailed through.

XFL National Radio Broadcast Partners with Sirius

June 7, 2010

New York, NY - The XFL, in conjunction with Calling All Sports and Sports Byline USA, can be heard on airwaves nationwide, Commissioner Michael Hyughue announced. "This is a tremendous opportunity to showcase our sport throughout the country," Hyughue said. "Calling All Sports has done an excellent job with XFL broadcasts. Because of such a positive response, the weekly broadcasts will now air on Sirius Satellite Radio."

"We're thrilled to partner with the XFL with this national broadcast platform", said Marty Tirrell of Calling All Sports. "Commissioner Hyughue and the league have tremendous energy and ideas. We are glad to be on their team."

XFL Week 15: Down to the Wire

June 8, 2010

Washington, DC - Home Field advantage helped spur the Valor to an early lead as the Washington crowd was loud and engaged as the game began. Washington shut down QB Brock Huard on the first possession and then the Valor offense proceeded to “matriculate the ball down the field” in the famous words of Hank Stram. They held onto the ball for 10:22 and 16 plays on their way to a short touchdown catch from WR Matt Jones, who would finish the day with 110 yards and 9 receptions. On their next possession, after yet another Ottawa 3-and-out, the Valor would add 3 more to go up 10-0 after one period. Ottawa would turn the tide a bit in the second half as their offense finally got some positive plays. They opened with a field goal on a short drive following a shanked punt, and then, after nearly picking off QB Mike Vick on a 3rd and 7, they took the ball on their own 22 and drove down the field, mixing runs from RB Justin Fargas with passes by Huard to WRs Reche Caldwell and Dane Looker until they found themselves on the 7 yard line. Giving the ball not to Fargas, but to RB Xavier Omon, who has been seeing more time at HB with the injury to RB Alvin Pearman, Omon rumbled into the end zone for the tying score.

With time running down in the 2nd quarter, Washington had an answer, moving the ball into field goal range and the home team went into the locker room with a 3-point lead at the half. They would come out and again build the lead to 10 thanks to a beautiful catch by WR Rod Gardner on a 3rd and 13 that kept the drive alive. Vick would repay Gardner three plays later, hitting him for the score on a corner route. Down 20-10, Ottawa still struggled on offense, but their special teams and defense found ways to help the cause. After a beautifully played punt gave Washington a 1st and 10 on their own 2 yard line, Ottawa used a run blitz on first down to stuff them on the one, and then blitzed a second time, nearly nabbing Vick in the end zone, but just as well, drawing a holding call which provided the 2 points and the ball.

The Force would garner another field goal at the end of their post-safety possession and now trailed the Valor by just 5. When K Todd France connected from 33 yards out on Washington’s next possession, it was an 8-point lead for the home team with about 6 minutes left to play. Ottawa would need a touchdown and the 2-point PAT to equalize. Huard moved the Force down the field efficiently, despite a pair of penalties which forced them to overcome a 1st and 15 and a 2nd and 20 on the drive. They would eventually punch it in when Huard hit Fargas on a swing pass from 2 yards out to pull within 2. But, with Fargas limping off the field after the play, they could not count on a 2 yard plunge to tie the game. Instead Coach Haslett called on Huard to bootleg out to the right and try to find Looker crossing in the end zone. Looker was in position, but a missed block by TE Bennie Joppru gave DL Julian Jenkins an angle on Huard, and just as Huard released the ball, he collided with Jenkins, sending the ball fluttering incomplete.

XFL Week 16: Playoff Bound

June 15, 2010

Tampa, FL - The game started off fully in Tampa’s favor, with over 43,000 on hand and a pumped up Bandits squad. The Bandits came out of the gate ready to roll, scoring on their first two possessions with QB Gibran Hamdan racking up 1st quarter yardage and finding both of his big receivers, Doug Gabriel and Chad Jackson on scoring strikes to take a 14-0 lead in the 1st. Washington would calm things down in the 2nd with a QB Mike Vick to WR Rod Gardner touchdown that brought them back to within a score and the defense started to find answers as well, holding Tampa to only 39 yards of offense in the quarter as Washington crawled back with back to back K Todd France field goals. At the half it was a paper thin lead for the Bandits, 14-13.

That lead disappeared in the 3rd as Washington continued to frustrate Hamdan and the Bandits. RB Avon Cobourne was simply not able to get much going on the ground, and would finish the day with only a 2.3 yards per carry average. Washington, on the other hand, got good production from both RB Lee Suggs and RB Kevin Jones, with both averaging just over 5 yards per carry. The Valor would add 6 points on two field goals to take a 19-14 lead in the the final period before Tampa again found the end zone. Tampa shifted things up at the end of the third, going with more two tight end formations and using TE George Wrighster as an offensive weapon. Hamdan would connect on seven consecutive passes and with 10:07 left in the quarter he found Gabriel in the end zone. The 2 point conversion, a bootleg run with a pitchout to Cobourne, put the Bandits back on top by 3 at 22-19. But it would be a short-lived lead as Vick hit on a deep ball to WR Ron Dixon, getting them in range for France to even the score with 1:03 left to play.

But, as we have seen all season, a tie score with a minute left is not a guaranteed ticket to overtime. But, when Tampa missed on a 3rd and 11 at their own 38, things looked bleak. The Bandits punted and it was a beauty. The coverage team did their job and downed the ball at the 1 yard line. Despite the poor field position Washington still had all the cards. All they needed was one first down and Tampa would have to burn all their time outs. But, Vick gave the ball to Jones on a dive left, the exchange was not ideal and when LB Odell Thurman clipped Jones at the line, the ball came loose, there was a mad scramble as the ball rolled back into the end zone and when the pile was sorted out it was DL Ra'Shon Harris of the Bandits who held it. Tampa was awarded the touchdown and the stadium erupted in delirium.

Vick Leaving Valor for the Philadelphia Eagles

June 21, 2010

Philadelphia, PA - Looking to add a new dimension to their offense, the Philadelphia Eagles gave the disgraced quarterback a one-year deal with an option for a second year. Vick wasn't brought in to compete with five-time Pro Bowl quarterback Donovan McNabb for a starting job, but the two could end up on the field together. The first year of the deal is for $1.6 million with the second-year option worth $5.2 million, sources told ESPN's Chris Mortensen. Vick can also earn an additional $3 million in incentives over the two years of the contract. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell conditionally lifted Vick's suspension, allowing him to sign with a team.

"I'm a believer that as long as people go through the right process, they deserve a second chance," Eagles coach Andy Reid said. "He's got great people on his side. There isn't a finer person than Tony Dungy. He's proven he's on the right track."

XFL Quarter-Final: Tampa Claims Florida and Moves On

June 22, 2010

Tampa, FL - The teams traded scores all day, with Tampa taking a 10-0 lead after a RB Michael Pittman touchdown to end the first quarter. Orlando countered with RB Ciatrick Fason’s first score of the game, but a QB Gibran Hamdan to WR Taylor Jacobs score as time ran down in the 2nd gave Tampa a 17-7 halftime advantage. The 2nd half began with Orlando drawing closer on Fason’s 2nd scoring run. Not to be outdone, Tampa again pressed their advantage and again it was Hamdan to Jacobs. But, after a solid defensive stop by Orlando, the Rage got a break as a busted coverage freed WR Ronald Curry and turned a short pass play into a 42-yard score.

Now down only by three, Orlando hoped to pull ahead on their next drive, but a tipped ball at the line found the waiting hands of Tampa’s DL Baraka Atkins. With a short field, Hamdan and the Bandits took advantage and Pittman punched it in from 2 yards out to boost the Bandit lead back to 10. Orlando would get back within three as QB Daunte Culpepper hit WR Glenn Holt for a score with 3 minutes left to play, but after a Tampa first down, Orlando got the ball back with only 22 seconds left in the game and it was just not enough time for them to get into field goal range. They opted instead for a Hail Mary with 2 seconds left, but the ball did not find a receiver, so it will be Tampa hosting Philadelphia next week, with the winner headed to the Veterans Bowl.

XFL Semi-Final: Defense Wins the West

June 29, 2010

San Antonio, TX - After the Commanders got on the board first with a QB Michael Bishop to WR Quincy Morgan 24-yard touchdown, Chicago’s shell defense kept San Antonio out of the end zone for most of the game. In the meantime, conservative calls and short passing allowed them to crawl back to within one at 7-6. But, in the end the dam broke and San Antonio again found an opening and doubled up the score. It was RB LaBrandon Toefield from 14 yards out. Up by eight and unwilling to risk Bishop to the Chicago pass rush which had garnered five sacks on the day, the Bandits turned to the run, rushing Toefield 9 times in the final quarter. Chicago never reached the end zone and when a Nick Novak kick from 47 out went wide left, it dispirited the Enforcers, who never crossed midfield after that point.

XFL Veterans Bowl: Commanders Finally Get One!

July 6, 2010

Las Vegas, NV - Both teams came up big on defense. Tampa did not record a first down until midway through the third quarter, and QB Gibran Hamdan was sacked six times. The Commanders put up 251 yards of offense, but they were more workmanlike than explosive. RB LaBrandon Toefield rushed for 56 yards, and QB Michael Bishop was 21-of-31 for 187 yards but had trouble finding receivers upfield. The Commanders led 17-14 at halftime, and neither team scored in the second half. After Bishop's touchdown to TE Johnny Huggins, the Commanders' second score was set up by the special teams, as WR Dexter Jackson's 60-yard punt return - built by broken tackles, good cuts and solid blocks - gave San Antonio the ball inside the Tampas 10-yard line. Two plays later, Toefield scored from 2 yards out to make it 14-0. Hamdan threw two touchdowns in the 2nd quarter before San Antonio hit a 32 yard field goal to end the second quarter and end up being the game winner.

"I couldn't be more pleased," head coach Mike Riley said. "Not only for our squad and our coaches and myself certainly, but for the whole San Antonio region. We all heard people say that this wouldn't happen, but I said to a number of our staff members, 'Who says we can't make it happen? We're going to make it happen.' It was sort of against all odds, but now we've done it, and I take tremendous pride in that. These are outstanding young men, it's a privilege to work with them. The thing about a championship is, nobody can ever take this away from you, we are the 2010 champions of the XFL, and they can't ever take that away from us."

Hartford Colonials Coach Chris Palmer Named Tennessee Titans Offensive Coordinator

July 7, 2010

Hartford, CT - Chris Palmer, who served as the Hartford Colonials Head Coach during the 2010 XFL season, has been named offensive coordinator of the NFL's Tennessee Titans. In addition to Palmer, four Colonials assistant coaches -offensive coordinator Keith Rowen, Kevin O'Dea, Tony Sparano Jr. and Todd Washington would be joining him as assistants with the Titans.

"Having personally worked with Chris Palmer at Jacksonville I was abundantly aware of his outstanding qualities as a coach," said XFL Commissioner Michael Huyghue. "While we regret losing such a gifted coach we recognize the XFL is about opportunities. Chris is undertaking a new opportunity and we wish him much success."

XFL Won't Admit Hartford Colonials Ship Has Sunk

July 28, 2010

Hartford, CT - Commissioner Michael Huyghue insisted on Wednesday that the Colonials are still alive and that the future of the team will be announced early next month. "We haven't made any decisions about what we are doing, whether we are adding teams, reducing teams, relocating teams, decreasing the season," Huyghue said. "All of that's being decided. Our expectation is to move forward." Huyghue, a Windsor native, said last week that the XFL's rent at Rentschler Field far exceeds the facility fees in any of the league's other markets.

"I like Hartford," Huyghue said Wednesday. "I'm from Hartford. That's part of the reason that we came there. I think that Hartford did well for us. Whatever decisions we make going forward, Hartford is not on the chopping block because it can't sustain a franchise for the XFL. There's been great support. In terms of Hartford being a troubled facility or situation, no, that's not the case."

"The ownership group has not been presented any recommendations as yet from the commissioner," Colonials owner Tim Armstrong said. "I expect we will announce whatever the conclusion is in early August. But nothing has been decided yet. No decisions have been made. We're considering a lot of options, but we have not made any decision yet."

NFL head Goodell says XFL is a 'positive' that will create 'more fans'

August 5, 2010

New York, NY - NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said he sees the success of the XFL as a "positive" rather than a competitor in an interview on "Sunday Morning Futures."

"I look at it as a positive because people are investing in football," Goodell said. "They're investing a significant amount of capital in alternate football leagues. That just shows you the popularity of our game. In fact, what I usually hear, 'I'm going to miss football for the next six months. What am I going to do?'" he said. "So they're going to have an opportunity to see the XFL starting a few weeks after the Super Bowl. That only creates greater opportunities and, frankly, more fans."

August 7, 2010

Los Angeles, CA - The Los Angeles Stars have fired head coach Rick Neuheisel and announced that Marc Trestman, the Tampa Bay Bandits' offensive coordinator, has been named the new head coach.

"We are pleased to welcome Marc Trestman to the XFL and excited about the opportunity to leverage his two decades of coaching experience as we reimagine the game of football," said Stars' minority owner and general manager John Elway. "I am very excited to be on the ground floor with Oliver, his team, and the other coaches across the XFL to help reimagine football," said Trestman. "I can't wait to begin working with the coaching staff together and building a team that will play disciplined, fundamentally sound and exciting football come February. Many thanks to Los Angeles Stars organization for this tremendous opportunity."

The ceremonial contract was to allow Hilliard the opportunity to file his retirement papers as a New York Giants player and to begin his new career as the Orlando Rage's WRs coach. "I know Ike is really excited about this opportunity and I know he'll go a great job for us," Gruden said. "One of the things that struck me about Ike when he was playing for the Bucs was his professionalism. His knowledge of the position, as well as his work ethic, made him an outstanding football player. That same knowledge and work ethic will make him an outstanding coach."

San Antonio Commanders' offensive coordinator left to become the head coach at the University of Wisconsin and the Commanders hired Roughnecks WRs coach Darrin Chiaverini as his replacement. XFL Returns to Seattle with the Dragons

August 15, 2010

Seattle, WA - The XFL announced Wednesday that the Hartford Colonials would be moving to Seattle after Colonials ownership, Tim Armstrong and Digital Sports & Entertainment LLC and Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field couldn't come to an agreement for use of the stadium. The Colonials were paying $1M previously and that price was expected to jump to $3M for the 2011 season. This marks a return to the Emerald City for the XFL, after the city lost their XFL team, the Sea Sea Devils to Oklahoma City in 2006. The Dragons will play their home games at Lumen Field right there in Seattle, and the Dragons will carry over all Hartford Colonials' players and coaches.

"Seattle, get excited and get loud for your Dragons. A storm is coming and we're bringing the excitement back," said Armstrong. "The Dragons are ready to play hard and smart for our fans in one of America's greatest football cities."

"We are disappointed to have to suspended operations in Hartford and are grateful to the Colonials fans for their support," commissioner Michael Huyghue said in a statement. "We have not closed the door on Hartford and will review the viability of returning to the city at the end of this season."

LA Stars' Kroenke Purchases NFL's Rams

August 25, 2010

St. Louis, MO - Stan Kroenke and Kroenke Sports & Entertainment(KSE) became full owner of the NFL's St. Louis Rams by unanimous consent of the NFL after Kroenke exercised his right of first refusal to buy the remaining interest in the Rams from the estate of the late-owner Georgia Frontiere. To gain approval from NFL owners, KSE, with Stan Kroenke listed as the owner, agreed to turn over control of the NBA's Denver Nuggets, NHL's Colorado Avalanche and XFL's Los Angeles Stars to his son, Josh Kroenke, by the end of 2010 and for Stan Kroenke to give up his personal majority stakes in all three teams by December 2014. The NFL does not allow its owners to hold majority control of major league teams in other NFL markets.

Los Angeles Stars' general manager John Elway would be resigning and taking the same position with the St. Louis Rams, but would stay on as a team president, minority owner and consultant of the Stars.

"It's an exciting day when Jim Zorn returns to his professional football roots," said Michael Huyghue, XFL Commissioner. "Jim comes to the XFL with terrific credentials as an NFL player and coach and a reputation for innovation. As the Seahawks first quarterback, he's well-known in the Pacific Northwest and he appreciates our vision to reimagine the game."

"I'm thrilled to be heading back to the sidelines, and I thank Tim Armstrong and Digital Sports & Entertainment LLC for this opportunity," said Zorn. "It's not often that on the professional level a head coach also gets to choose his players, so this situation is truly unique. I'm looking forward to working with my coaches and staff to field a competitive, top-flight team for the amazing and loud football fans of the Pacific Northwest."

September 8, 2010

“We are thrilled to be partners with ESPN, NBC Sports and FOX Sports, three innovative media companies with extensive experience in world-class football production that will undoubtedly help us reimagine football,” Vince McMahon, XFL founder, said in a statement. “The XFL broadcast schedule provides us with incredible reach and makes it easy for fans to watch our games consistently every weekend.”

XFL Launches Football Advisory Network

September 17, 2010

Jeremaine Copeland Announces Retirement

September 25, 2010

Los Angeles, CA - After 10 seasons with the Los Angeles Stars, WR Jeremaine Copeland has announced his retirement from the XFL. Thanks to my family for all of their support throughout my career as well. I would like to thank the XFL organization for allowing me to play in some of the greatest cities, the greatest organizations, and in front of the greatest groups of fans. It has been a great run and a lot of fun for me but I believe it's time to move on in my life. I would like to say thanks to all of my teammates that I played with and especially the those who helped make my career what it was. Last but not least, I want to thank my receiving corps, who are all great groups of guys that made it fun to play the game of football."

XFL and Under-Armour Renew Partnership

October 26, 2010

Baltimore, MD - The XFL and Under-Armour have renewed their partnership for the next three seasons, the league office announced today. The partnership designates Under-Armour as the official uniform and on-field apparel supplier of the XFL and Spalding as the official game ball supplier of the league. The game ball is specifically designed with the XFL's signature stripe for higher visibility in the passing game, and the league and Spalding encourage fans to keep those footballs that enter the stands during game play.

"This has been a tremendous partnership for many years," XFL Commissioner Michael Hyughue said. "The innovation and commitment to excellence demonstrated by Under-Armour and Spalding makes them a natural fit for the XFL and we are thrilled to continue this partnership for another three years."

"We're excited to continue our partnership with the XFL," said Kevin Plank, executive president, Under-Armour, LLC. "The fast-paced action and intense competition in the XFL is a great platform to showcase the dynamic design and high quality of both our Under-Armour and Spalding products."

ConAgra Foods, XFL and Omaha Mammoths Team up to Tackle Hunger

October 28, 2010

Omaha, NE - ConAgra Foods and the United Football League are teaming up in an extensive initiative to help fight child hunger. ConAgra Foods partners with Share Our Strength nationally for the "No Kid Hungry Campaign," and Food Bank for the Heartland locally in Omaha, Nebraska, for its "Shine the Light on Hunger" campaign. The XFL, and its Omaha Mammoths team specifically, are helping ConAgra Foods with initiatives to help end child hunger at games in the coming weeks. "We look forward to seeing the end results and how the generosity of the people of Omaha will positively impact many children's lives," said Omaha Mammoths Director of Business Operations Don Igo. "The Mammoths are proud to be part of this initiative."

Chris Kircher, President, ConAgra Foods Foundation added. "We are really excited to be partnering with the XFL on such an important cause to ConAgra Foods that will benefit the communities in which we live and work. The partnership has exceeded our expectations and we are proud to 'Shine the Light on Hunger' in conjunction with the XFL."

XFL Names New Era Official Sideline Headwear Partner

"As we continue to build our alliance of world class partners, it was an easy decision to bring in New Era Cap to provide our players and fans with signature, premium caps on-the-field, in-the-stands and at home," said Dick Ebersol, XFL co-founder. "New Era Cap is a brand rooted in sports and innovation, and has become synonymous with our favorite players, leagues and teams, making them a perfect partner for the XFL."

"The XFL's commitment to players, fans and the game make it a strong addition to our portfolio of licensed league partners," said Ryan DiNunzio, Director of Football for New Era Cap. Vince Papale to Attend Brawlers Open Tryouts

December 13, 2010

Philadelphia, PA - The Philadelphia Brawlers announced that former Philadelphia Eagle, Vince Papale, will attend the team's open tryouts at the NovaCare Complex, home of the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles. "We are looking for high-character people who are good football players," said Ron Jaworski, Philadelphia Brawlers general manager. "We will go to any means to find them. We will scout NFL rosters, CFL rosters, UFL rosters, NCAA rosters. Our goal is to put together the best roster we can. If we can find a player who has slipped by some other teams or other leagues, that's fine. Dick Vermeil did the same thing back in the day and that brought Vince Papale to the Eagles."

"It's about opportunity," says Papale. "I applaud the Brawlers for sharing this opportunity with their fan base. Now it's up to those people who want to take advantage of this opportunity to showcase their abilities and create something for themselves."

Rage Spread Holiday Spirit with Subway at Salvation Army

December 20, 2010

Orlando, FL - The Orlando Rage teamed up with Subway Restaurants to take part in the 12th Annual Pat Carter Winter Festival at the Salvation Army Women and Children's Center in Downtown Orlando. The players also autographed Rage memorabilia for the center's residents, posed for photos, passed out t-shirts, and distributed Subway subs to residents.

"It always reminds me of how lucky we are to play football professionally when I come to events like this," said Rage QB Daunte Culpepper. "These folks have so little and are so happy to receive something for the holidays from us. It has to leave an impression on you that you can leave such an impression on others," he said. "It is really incredible and makes me thankful for what I have."

CFL Coaches, GMs Acknowledge XFL is Impacting Talent Level

January 8, 2011

Blue Mountain, ONTARIO, CANADA - Salaries are now higher in the XFL but the CFL is leaning on their long-term stability and have no plans to change their business model. But as of right now, there doesn’t seem to be much real concern that CFL veterans are going to pack up and head south to play in the spring league. The XFL is, however, affecting the availability of young players who are coming right out of college.

“I think you’re seeing less players available,” said Saskatchewan Roughriders head coach Greg Marshall. “There’d be more guys out there we’d be looking to bring in if it weren’t for the XFL, but all of that has kind of already happened. If a guy is going to the XFL, he’s already there so we’re not competing for that guy. But yes, if there was no XFL there’d be a lot more players you’d be looking at to bring into rookie camp and workout."

At the best of times, there are only so many quarterbacks in the world who are able to play their position at the professional level, and teams looking for young guys to come in and spend a couple years developing are in for more of a challenge now. “It’s harder to find quarterbacks right now because of the XFL,” said Calgary Stampeders head coach John Hufnagel. “There were some players on our negotiations list who we thought would be ready to come up right now, but they’re just not. We’ve dropped a few guys because of that and we’re trying to find other players.”

Tampa Bay Sports and Entertainment LLC Purchases Tampa Bay Bandits

January 13, 2011

Tampa, FL - Tampa Bay Sports and Entertainment Football LLC led by Jeff Vinik, announced the purchase today of the Tampa Bay Bandits from Stuart Sternberg and Sunburst Sports & Entertainment LLC. "As our business in Tampa Bay evolves and we deepen our commitment to the community, we believe it makes sense to bring the Bandits under the Tampa Bay Sports and Entertainment umbrella," said Vinik upon making the announcement. "The team is an asset for Tampa Bay and its sports fans and we want to ensure its stability and position in the XFL for the good of our community. We look forward to even more significant announcements in the future, further illustrating our intentions for Tampa Bay."

"It's an honor to partner with an organization that has such a celebrated legacy such as the Tampa Bay Lightning," XFL Co-Founder Vince McMahon added. "We are truly excited to add Jeff Vinik and Tampa Bay Sports and Entertainment to the XFL today. Mr. Vinik brings a long-time passion for the sports and entertainment industry to the league and it is tremendous to welcome a group with football expertise brought by Tod Leiweke, having previously served as the CEO of the National Football League's Seattle Seahawks."

"I couldn't be more thrilled to welcome Mr. Vinik to the Tampa Bay Bandits family as he joins us in our quest for another XFL championship" Bandits head coach Steve Spurrier said. "Under his leadership, I am confident the team will be able to develop and sustain a high degree of stability, while consistently providing our fans with an excellent and exciting product on the field."

XFL Player Personnel Staff To Attend Under-Armour Senior Bowl

January 21, 2011

Jacksonville, FL - XFL player personnel staff will attend the Under-Armour Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama, for three days next week to take in practices and other events.

"Our agenda will entail attending practices that will give our XFL Football Administration and personnel department the opportunity to evaluate players and interview players, coaches, scouts and agents," said Brian Woods, XFL director of football development. "Approximately 98 percent of Senior Bowl attendees end up spending time in the NFL, so we expect most of these players to carry their talents on to the next level. With the potential for an NFL lockout, this number could be lower, as undrafted free agents may not be able to sign after the NFL Draft, thus increasing the pool for potential XFL players."

Rage Open Camp on Monday, Gruden Analyzes His Team

January 22, 2011

Orlando, FL - Rage head coach Jay Gruden will welcome 70 players on Monday as the Orlando Rage open training camp for the 2011 season. "I'm excited to get started," Gruden said. "We have a terrific base of players from last year returning and some outstanding new prospects. We obviously want to take that final step and bring a championship back to Orlando. With the heat and humidity in Florida, you are always dealing with thunderstorms in the afternoon on a daily basis. By going one long practice in the morning you usually take the weather out of the equation, with the added benefit of giving the players and coaches a longer time to recuperate."

XFL Teams Announce Additional Reserve List

February 26, 2011

Greenwich, CT - The twenty teams of the XFL have each released their reserve lists, the players who practice with the XFL universal practice squad, Greenwich Road Warriors.

"You never have enough big men," said Desperados head coach Jerry Glanville. "We got three offensive linemen that when they break the huddle, they should block out the sun. We had to get a quarterback. We had to get safeties and you've got to have corners to win. We got a defensive tackle with size who can run. All in all, we tried to fix what was broken."

"I'm impressed with the talent but more importantly with the person and the passion and competitiveness they all have," said New York Guardians head coach Jim Fassel. "I'm very pleased with the list of players because we research players carefully and talk to them to make sure they are our kind of guys. We don't have to talk anyone into coming to play with us. They all want to be on this team. They all have NFL experience and will be an asset to the team."

"This list of players we aim to bring to the Road Warriors encompasses many of the elements we are looking for in our roster beyond the obvious goal of them contributing on the football field," said Orlando Rage head coach Jay Gruden. "We have a player with local ties, some with notable NFL experience, some who have played in other leagues similar to our, and one who is returning to the team and understands the set up here in Greenwich.

XFL Week 1: Get This Party Started

March 1, 2011

Salt Lake City, UT - A good opening day battle between two potential contenders in the Western Conference as Los Angeles traveled to Salt Lake to open the season. A light rain fell during most of the game but did not seem to impact play as the two teams combined for 817 yards of offense. Both Kevan Barlow and Matt Asiata started the season well, with the Stars leading rusher gaining 116 to kick off a new year while the Mountain Lions’ Asiata gained 93 and scored on his first action of the year.

A 14-13 game at the half in favor of the visitors, thanks to touchdowns’ from wide receivers Reggie Williams and Dwayne Jarrett. Los Angeles boosted their lead on the first drive of the second half when backup RB DeShaun Foster rumbled in from 8 yards out, but Salt Lake would find a way back. Down 24-16 after 3 quarters, the Mountain Lions got touchdowns from backup RB Musa Smith and a TE Teyo Johnson touchdown catch to take the lead 29-24 with only minutes left. But, on the touchdown toss, QB JT O'Sullivan was dinged up and little used backup QB Shane Boyd would have to finish the game.

San Antonio Commanders Announce Partnership with Alamo Beer Company

March 3, 2011

San Antonio, TX - The XFL's San Antonio Commanders have announced a partnership with San Antonio-based Alamo Beer Company. The partnership, which is the first between an XFL team and a brewery, includes the production of two seasonal craft beers that will carry the Commanders' name. Alamo Beer will brew, serve and distribute a Commanders Light and Commanders Amber during the first quarter of 2011.

"When the opportunity to work with the Commanders presented itself, it was an obvious choice; what pairs better than beer and football?" said Eugene Simor, Founder and President of Alamo Beer Company. "Alamo at its core is local. We jump at the chance to support organizations that share our fierce independent spirit. So, collaborating with a new team to ignite excitement about football in San Antonio - we're in."

"As we prepare for our inaugural season, we are thrilled to develop a partnership with a local brewery such as Alamo Beer Company," said Commanders' Owner Larry Benson. "This partnership allows us to align with a staple of San Antonio. The development of the two co-branded beers provides a unique tool that lets San Antonio know the Commanders have arrived and are eager to become part of the fabric of the Alamo City community."
