Force Acquire McNown in Trade

March 29, 2008

Los Angeles, CA - The Los Angeles Stars acquire OL Mathias Vavao, QB Rohan Davey and WR Chris Jackson in exchange for QB Cade McNown and future considerations. "It's a great feeling coming to Ottawa," said McNown. "I'm looking forward to being in a place where we have an opportunity to win some ball games. I'm happy to have a new team, a new city and a new start."

XFL Week 7: This Game Had Everything

March 31, 2008

Chicago, IL - In one of the most entertaining games of the season, fans were treated to a variety of big plays and four lead changes. The game's first eight minutes featured two successful on-side kicks by Chicago, a field goal and a 49-yard interception return for a touchdown by Desperados DL Remi Ayodele. His interception of Enforcers' QB Joey Harrington came on the first play after Chicago had caught Dallas by surprise with its first on-side kick and gave the Desperados a 7-3 lead. After punting on their next possession, the Enforcers forced the Desperados into a punt of their own and Chicago WR Luther Leverson returned it 70 yards to the Dallas 16-yard line. Harrington hit WR David Terrell for 15 yards on first down and RB Noah Herron punched it in from there for a 1-yard touchdown to give the Enforcers a 10-7 lead. Chicago followed the touchdown with its second on-side kick of the first quarter and took possession at its own 48-yard line. The drive stalled, however, when Harrington threw incomplete on a fourth-down attempt and Dallas took over at its 45. The Desperados moved into field goal range on QB Tim Rattay's 20-yard completion to WR Bobby Sippio. After three straight running plays, K Ryan Killeen capped a 6-play, 29-yard drive with a 44-yard field goal to tie the game at 10. Both offenses were explosive in the second quarter as Chicago moved the ball 80 yards for the go-ahead touchdown-a 1-yard run by Herron and 83 yards for a 20-yard FG. Dallas answered with touchdown drives of 70 and 71 yards. The first score came on a 7-yard pass from Rattay to WR MarTay Jenkins and the second on an 8-yard connection from Rattay to TE Bobby Blizzard, giving Dallas a 24-20 halftime lead.

Dallas used its momentum on the opening possession of the second half, taking the kickoff and driving 68 yards in 13 plays for a 26-yard field goal. The Desperados' inability to turn a 1st-and-goal situation into a touchdown was costly. Chicago's defense responded by forcing three punts and two turnovers on Dallas' remaining five possessions. The Enforcers tied the game at 27-27 on the first play of the fourth quarter when Harrington found WR David Givens for a 5-yard touchdown to cap an 11-play, 67-yard drive. Dallas appeared to be moving into position for a go-ahead score midway through the fourth quarter, as Rattay converted a clutch 3rd-and-9 play to Blizzard for 28 yards to the Chicago 40-yard line. Three plays later, on 3rd-and-3, Rattay tried to find Blizzard again but Chicago DB Brent Grimes jumped the route to intercept the pass and returned it 58 yards to the Desperados' 8-yard line. From there, Herron took over with runs of 5 yards, 2 yards and ultimately 1 yard for the score, and the 34-27 lead that would hold up over the final three minutes.

Desperados' head coach Jerry Glanville said, "I think the Enforcers are a different team with Joey Harrington in the lineup. They do a lot of good things. Their running game has been playing better and it was a tough game. We knew that it would be tough coming in."

XFL Week 7: Omaha Too Tough in Second Half

April 3, 2008

Omaha, NE - Mammoths RB Ron Dayne rushed for three touchdowns and the defense limited Los Angeles to 13 points en route to a win on Sunday night. Dayne scored the first three touchdowns of the game for the Mammoths all on short yardage plunges as the defending champions built a 24-13 lead midway through the third quarter. Omaha K A.J. Haglund drilled a 21-yard field goal as time expired in the first quarter giving the Mammoths 3-0 lead. Following a 14-yard scoring pass from QB Ryan Dinwiddie to WR Jeremaine Copeland that gave the Stars a 13-10 lead early in the second quarter, the Mammoths used a 21-0 run spanning the third and fourth quarters to build a 31-13 lead and held on for the win.

XFL Week 7: Ghosts Lose to Guardians

April 4, 2008

New York, NY - Ghosts WR Lance Moore snagged two touchdown passes in New York and DB Abraham Elimimian returned an interception 42 yards for a touchdown, but it was not enough, as the Ghosts lost to the Guardians, 29-25. New York marched down the field on its opening drive, highlighted by a pair of QB Chris Redman passes to WR Yatil Green, including a 29 yard bomb to convert a 3rd and 15 situation. Green and Redman connected again on the following play on a three yard strike, allowing New York to take an early lead.

Down 19-14 to open up the second half, the Guardians rallied with the defense once again setting the tone, harassing QB Joe Germaine in the backfield, forcing three straight incompletions and turning the ball back over to the offense after stopping the Ghosts on downs. Redman and the Guardians responded, capping a seven-play drive with a touchdown to WR Troy Walters. Redman would hook up with WR Zuriel Smith in the early fourth quarter, with the Guardians quarterback capping a quick and efficient six play drive with a nine-yard touchdown pass to the wide receiver. With the game now out of reach, the Ghosts nonetheless kept fighting, with Germaine tossing a strike to WR Lance Moore in the waning seconds of the fourth period.

"I have a week to make some evaluations and see what I can do to help improve this football team. But here's what we're not going to do. We're not going to get on an emotional rollercoaster. Right now, our Achilles heal is the turnovers," said Ghost head coach Marc Trestman. "We have continuity on special teams and defense, but we don't have that on offense. We're playing out of sync. We have to keep improving out protection, but every team we played this year has protection problems. We're not the only ones, and we're not going to make excuses."

-- (6-0)Ghosts 25 - 29 Guardians(2-3)
(COL): QB Germaine - 24/37 213 yards, 2 TDs, 3 INTs, RB Clarett - 21 carries, 86 yards, WR Moore - 6 catches, 87 yards, 2 TDs
(NY): QB Redman - 23/36 225 yards, 2 TDs, RB Scobey - 13 carries, 90 yards, WR Green - 5 catches, 90 yards, 1 TD

Stars and Bandits Make Exchange

April 5, 2008

Los Angeles, CA - The Los Angeles Stars acquire QB Shaun King in exchange for RB Mike Cloud and QB Rohan Davey from the Tampa Bay Bandits. "This is a big day for the Los Angeles Stars," said Stars head coach Rick Neuheisel. "Shaun is a great player and we are thrilled to have him in Los Angeles. He wants to be here as much as we want him here. He is the kind of player that makes us better in all phases of the game and he will mix very well with the veteran guys we have."

"Rohan Davey and Mike Cloud will bring us depth at key areas," Bandits head coach Steve Spurrier said. "It is important this time of year to stock up where you can and make a push toward the postseason. We look for each of those guys to step in and contribute to that effort."

XFL Week 8: Commanders' Redzone Defense Holds up Enforcers

April 7, 2008

Chicago, IL - The San Antonio Commanders got their record back to even tonight with a 19-13 come-from-behind victory over the Chicago Enforcers in front of 34,312 Chicago fans. The Commanders scored 10 points in the fourth quarter and intercepted a Enforcers' QB Joey Harrington pass with four seconds remaining in the game to thwart Chicago's last scoring threat. For nearly three quarters, the Enforcers maintained the upper hand in a sluggish battle dominated by field goals and untimely penalties. San Antonio, after early struggles on offense, began to find its rhythm late in the first half and scored on its last four meaningful possessions to overcome the Enforcers. Perhaps the most damaging sequence of penalties for the Enforcers came late in the third quarter after they had increased their lead to 13-9. San Antonio took possession at its own 28 after the ensuing kickoff, and two plays later found themselves staring at a 2nd-and-21 situation after DL Michael Haynes sacked QB Michael Bishop. But Haynes was called for a 15-yard personal foul away from the play and was ejected from the game for his actions, giving the Commanders new life. Three plays later, San Antonio threw incomplete on third down but Chicago DB Jordan Younger was called for pass interference downfield, and the Commanders drive was once again resuscitated. The Commanders then got on track offensively, converting two third-down plays to move inside the Chicago 10-yard line. On 3rd-and-goal from the 8, Bishop hit WR LC Stevens for an 8-yard touchdown to cap a 12-play 72-yard drive spanning 5:31, including 50 yards on penalties. Enforcers head coach Mike Singletary requested a replay challenge on the Bishop-to-Stevens touchdown, which Stevens hauled in while leaning out of bounds. The original ruling was upheld to give San Antonio its first lead of the game at 16-13 with 11:53 remaining in the game.

Chicago answered with an impressive drive on its next possession, and was poised to regain the lead before RB Noah Herron fumbled at the 1-yard line and the ball was recovered in the end zone by Commanders' DB Joselio Hanson. Herron, who finished the game with only 42 rushing yards, had ignited the potential go-ahead drive with a 29-yard catch-and-run on a screen pass from QB Joey Harrington. San Antonio took over with 6:43 on the clock and was successful in running the clock down with a methodical nine-play, 66-yard drive for a 33-yard field goal and a 19-13 lead with 2:01 remaining. The Enforcers would not go down without a fight as they once again moved the ball downfield, this time with Harrington efficiently spreading the ball to four different receivers who were adept at getting out of bounds to stop the clock. Chicago managed to run 10 plays and cover 60 yards in just 1:47, reaching the San Antonio 20-yard line with 11 seconds on the clock. Staring at a 4th-and-5 situation, Harrington's last shot at the win was denied when Hanson struck again by intercepting Harrington's pass at the 5-yard line to seal the win.

Commanders' QB Michael Bishop after the game said, "This win was huge. This was about the playoffs. If we lost, it would be devastating to us. Our goal has always been to get to the championship game. Both teams out there battled. We knew coming into this game it was going to be tough. They have gotten much better since the beginning of the season. We felt that we've gotten much better also, and we've had 2 of 3 weeks in a row where we've felt we have been doing some good things."

XFL Week 9: Guardians Blow Out Stars

April 14, 2008

New York, NY - The Guardians scored on seven consecutive possessions after punting on their opening series, and went on to amass 351 yards of total offense, including 247 passing yards. RB Josh Scobey started New York's first scoring drive with an 8-yard gain and QB Chris Redman found his rhythm in the passing game, completing three tosses on the drive to WR Tai Streets. Scobey scored on a 1-yard run to cap an 11-play, 80-yard drive. After forcing a three-and-out on Los Angeles' next possession, New York started in excellent field position courtesy. Redman drove his team into field goal range, and K Rhys Lloyd converted a 44-yard field goal to increase the New York lead to 10-0. Scobey's second touchdown run of the half came on a 6-yard dash with 10:17 remaining in the second quarter. The 54-yard march was keyed by three Redman completions for 43 yards, before Scobey took over with runs of 4 and 6 yards to cap the drive and push the lead to 17-0.

Los Angeles finally found its offensive rhythm on the ensuing possession, putting together an impressive 14-play, 83-yard drive that culminated in a 2-yard touchdown pass from QB Shaun King to WR Dez White on a fade route to the left side of the end zone. The drive was aided by two 15-yard penalties on New York, the first of which nullified a third-down stop back at Los Angeles's own 26-yard line. RB Kevan Barlow carried the load for much of the drive with six rushes for 29 yards, while King completed all five of his pass attempts to four different receivers. The Guardians, however, came back with a quick-strike scoring drive before the half to push their lead to 24-7. Moving the ball entirely through the air, New York was able to drive 68 yards in just 1:30, and scored on a 14-yard pass from Redman to TE Sean McHugh with 53 second remaining in the half. The two teams traded field goals in the third quarter, as each team's only possession consumed nearly the entire quarter. The Stars' field goal, a 38-yarder, narrowed the gap to 24-10. Any hopes of a Los Angeles comeback were dashed when New York added two touchdowns in a 2:33 span in the fourth quarter, the first via a 17-yard Redman touchdown pass to WR David Givens. The Guardians' DB Diamond Ferri then closed the game by returning an interception 75 yards for a touchdown with 6:45 to play.

XFL Week 10: Canada Provides a Great XFL Football Atmosphere

April 21, 2008

Ottawa, ONTARIO, CANADA - The Ottawa Force kept themselves in contention tonight for a playoff birth as they defeated the Washington Valor 44-13 in front of 34,392 fans. Force' QB Brock Huard threw two first-half touchdowns as the Force built a 24-7 halftime lead in a game they dominated from start to finish. Huard then added two more touchdowns through the air in the second half to help the Force get one game closer to evening their record at 5-5. Huard completed 28 of 45 pass attempts for 310 yards and four touchdowns, while Watts and Looker each led the pass catchers with six receptions for 81 and 56 yards, respectively. RB Ken Simonton added 17 carries for 87 yards as 7 different Force players caught passes on the night.

Force head coach John Jenkins said, "All in all, I thought we played well and came out pretty injury free. I didn't want to play RB Jamal Robertson tonight. He's got a foot problem, but I think he'll be alright. He's pretty dynamic for us," and when asked about his team's playoff opportunities, "We try not to look that far but we're trying to take it one step at a time. It's important for us to get better as a team in all three phases of the game. Tonight is something we can build on for the next week to get the victory. We have a great fan base out there. The fans really come out to support us and get into the games. They are yelling and screaming and it's a great football atmosphere."

XFL Introduces Las Vegas Conquerors as Expansion Franchise

April 25, 2008

Las Vegas, NV - At a press conference today, new XFL franchise owner, billionaire entrepreneur and Wall Street investor Bill Hambrecht along with Hambrecht Sports & Entertainment LLC announced that Las Vegas will be returning to the league and the franchise will be named the Conquerors. The name "Conquerors" was selected after reviewing more than thirty thousand fan entries and receiving interpretation from industry experts and an in-house creative team on what attributes the fans were seeking with their submissions. Las Vegas Conquerors first head coach Dennis Green was also in attendance at the press event. The former Arizona Cardinals and Minnesota Vikings head coach will be joined by Ted Cottrell as his defensive coordinator and Mike Kruczek as his offensive coordinator. Sid Pillai will serve as the general manager and the team will play their home games at Sam Boyd Stadium.

"I am thrilled to bring football back to Las Vegas," said Hambrecht. "Las Vegas is one of the fastest-growing cities in the country and is hungry for professional sports, especially football. We hope to be the preeminent pro sports franchise in Las Vegas for many years to come. It was critical for us to select team names that we felt best reflected the local community while simultaneously defining the personality of the team," added Hambrecht. “I’ve had a lot of places I’ve worked with, and I really like the direction of the XFL and its goals. The commissioner himself is first class to work with, and he has a great vision and bringing a coach of Dennis Green's caliber to the Conquerors is a major step forward not only for the team but also for the XFL. He is a coach who will excite the fans here and will be an integral part of the team we are building that we hope can bring a championship to Las Vegas. I am delighted that he joined the league."

XFL Week 11: Bandits Out Gun Ghosts

April 28, 2008

Columbus, OH - With no timeouts and just 37 seconds left for the final drive, starting from their own 25, the Tampa Bay Bandits had little room for error. But the confidence to get it done was there. "Yeah, a lotta time. Lotta time left," QB Gibran Hamdan said. Head coach Steve Spurrier added he was "cautiously optimistic." The Ghosts had just taken their first lead of the game, 34-30, on WR Mike Furrey's 12-yard touchdown reception to cap an eight-play, 75-yard drive. The score completed Columbus' comeback from a 17-0 deficit in the second quarter, a hole that was still 10 points, at 30-20, early in the fourth. But 37 seconds was enough to get three plays off – two completions to WR Doug Gabriel, covering 25 and 17 yards, sandwiched around an incomplete pass to WR DeAndrew Rubin. Hamdan spiked the ball after both catches, the last one with three seconds left. The goal was to get in range for one last chance at the endzone. Mission accomplished. On the last play of the game, Hamdan dropped back and hit Gabriel for the 47 yard score and win.

XFL Week 12: Rage Cruise Through Salt Lake

May 5, 2008

Salt Lake City, UT - The Orlando Rage cruised to a 44-10 victory tonight over the Salt Lake City Mountain Lions before a crowd of 33,306 in a game that the Rage benefited from five turnovers and had five different players score touchdowns. The Rage set the tone early in this contest, blocking a Mountain Lions' punt on Salt Lake's first possession. RB Maurice Hicks knifed through the Mountain Lions' line for the block, and LB Tommy Polley scooped up the loose ball and ran 17 yards for a touchdown to give Orlando a 7-0 lead. Both teams' defenses stayed tough for the remainder of the first quarter. Salt Lake's next three possessions resulted in two punts and an interception, while Orlando punted twice before mounting what would become its first offensive scoring drive. Taking possession with 1:04 to play in the first quarter, QB Joe Hamilton moved the Rage 62 yards in seven plays for a touchdown and a 14-0 lead. Hamilton found TE Lawrence Hart for a 4-yard touchdown toss to cap the drive. The Rage's next drive covered 63 yards in 13 plays, before they settled for a 32-yard FG and a 17-0 lead heading into halftime.

Salt Lake's offense continued to struggle after the break, as their five possessions in the third quarter netted a total of -8 yards on 14 plays. Three possessions ended on turnovers, including two fumbles that the Rage turned into touchdowns. Hamilton's second touchdown toss of the night, covering 3 yards to WR Troy Edwards, increased the lead to 24-0, and RB Maurice Hick's 1-yard scoring run raised it to 31-0 with 8:49 to play in the third quarter. The third Rage touchdown of the quarter also came on a short field, this time the result of a Salt Lake breakdown on special teams. WR Tamarick Vanover returned a Salt Lake punt 54 yards to the 5-yard line, setting up a quick 5-yard scoring pass by Hamilton for a 38-0 lead. The Mountain Lions erased the shutout on their next possession when RB Musa Smith scored on a 1-yard run to cap the longest Salt Lake drive of the night, 80 yards in nine plays.

XFL Week 13: No Parity in Omaha

May 12, 2008

Omaha, NE - The Omaha Mammoths showed their dominance of the XFL with a decisive 34-7 victory over the Washington Valor tonight before a crowd of 42,021. The Mammoths moved to 9-3 on the season, while the Valor fell to 1-11. The Mammoths' offense came alive in the second quarter. Banks connected with the WR Herb Haygood for the longest pass play of the game, a 61-yard touchdown to give the first-place Mammoths a 7-0 lead. On Valor's first play of the next series, Omaha DL Cullen Jenkins stripped Valor RB Lee Suggs of the ball and Mammoths' LB Quinton Caver recovered at the DC 19-yard line. Banks then connected with WR Matthew Hatchette for a 14-point lead. After a late FG Omaha took a 17-0 lead into halftime.

Omaha's offense continued to roll in the third quarter, scoring on each of their first two possession to take a commanding 27-0 lead. Two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties against the Mammoths early in the fourth quarter helped Washington move the ball to the 22-yard line. RB James Jackson finally scored Washington's first points of the game on the third play of the fourth quarter, carrying around left end for a 2-yard touchdown. But the Mammoths would tack on another score on a Banks touchdown pass to WR Kevin Kasper. Neither team rushed for 100 yards in the game, and the Mammoths' defense forced five turnovers while their offense recorded almost twice as many first downs as the Valor.

Mammoths' head coach Frank Solich said, "We started a little sluggish and our offense really didn't get things going until midway through the second quarter. But our defense did a nice job and forced a few turnovers that kept us in the game and enabled us to score some points."

UFL Cuts Season Short, Championship Game this Weekend

May 15, 2008

New York, NY - The UFL will move up the their Championship Game that will feature its two 3-1 teams, the Florida Blacktips and California Redwoods, while the other four teams will play in a consolation games on May 17th.

"Our two top teams are playing in the Championship Game this weekend and at 3-1 they are deadlocked with the best record, so are deserving finalists," said UFL founder Cedric Dempsey. "I am confident this game will be a spectacular close to our first season. This strategy of moving straight to the Championship Game is the best means by which to take the UFL forward. We faced many challenges during the offseason, but were still able to kick off our first season. The focus on building a blueprint for the long-term success of the league begins immediately with plans to expand to a minimum of eight teams for the 2009 season."

XFL Week 14: Guardians Take Ottawa by Force

May 19, 2008

Ottawa, ONTARIO, CANADA - The Force were unable to carry the momentum into the second half after a last second touchdown that made the 19-15, going three and out. It looked as if Ottawa was once again going to watch the game get away from them until the Guardians missed on a 38-yard field goal. Force QB Brock Huard then led an impressive drive that featured some nice runs by RB Ken Simonton and short receptions by WR Darius Watts. However, it was WR Reche Caldwell's 29-yard reception that got Ottawa into the lead for the first time in the game. Ottawa moved the ball to New York's 48-yard line with 3:46 remaining in the game looking to clinch the game but turned the ball over on downs. The Guardians used their good field position to regain their lead for good, 26-23 on a QB Chris Redman to WR Troy Walters 24 yard touchdown to close the scoring.

"We are really working hard on getting off to a better start and I think we're getting close," said Force head coach John Jenkins. "I liked their bounce back and resiliency because there was a chance where they could have gone up 22-15, and we held them to a missed field goal, so that was a big moment. I thought, oh boy, we got it going right now. Then our offense got a few good things going. It's unfortunate it didn't work out. We got a penalty and some things didn't go our way. But we are getting close."

XFL Week 15: Nothing Comes Easy

May 26, 2008

Omaha, NE - Oklahoma City DB Clint Finley ripped off his helmet once the victory was finally secured, after a 29-point lead on the Salt Lake City Mountain Lions late in the third quarter evaporated into yet another teeth-clenching finish. Finley looked exhausted and exasperated, hardly excited at all. These Roughnecks don't make anything easy on themselves. RB Mike Anderson rushed for 110 yards and RB Autry Denson added another 61 on the ground with a touchdown and the Roughnecks held on to beat the Mountain Lions 35-33 by forcing an incomplete pass in the end zone on the final play Thursday night. QB JT O'Sullivan's throw to TE Doug Jolley was on target, but Finley smashed into the tight end at just the right moment to dislodge the ball as DB Derrick Strait and LB Lester Towns converged. That gave the Roughnecks a critical victory after they flirted with an unforgivable loss. “It is frustrating having to come down to the last second. It’s taken a few years of my life this season, but it’s good to be on this side of a close one,” Finley said.

Salt Lake City head coach Dennis Erickson wasn't all that impressed by the comeback. “We were JV again tonight, and I'm talking up front on both sides,” Erickson said. “There’s some good out there. There’s some bad out there. We’ll have to go back and watch and see what it really was."

UFL Hunts For New Teams, TV Deal And An NFL Marriage

May 28, 2008

New York, NY - Now, it remains to be seen whether or the UFL has played their final game ever because the financially challenged UFL has struggled to attract the television licensing deal or NFL partnership that would propel it into financial stability and the American mainstream. League founder Cedric Dempsey said Friday that a decision should come in January. League officials this week were optimistic that the league would survive long enough to play a second season. The six-team league had to cut its regular season short to just four games to save about $20 million, leaving total losses this season at $20 million. The savings will help the league come out stronger in future seasons, officials said.

"Obviously we fell short on finances this year and that's why we're where we are at," said Dempsey. "The overall model has to be a little more financially responsible." League officials all agree that the next step is to add more teams, which would would attract more eyeballs across the country and extend the season. Both of those effects would make it easier to find a broadcast network willing to carry the league's games. "With everyone playing four or five games, that's not a real football season," Dempsey said.

Dempsey suggested teaming up with the UFL would help the NFL deliver programming to the NFL Network and expose its brands to smaller markets without a specific NFL team to follow. He suggested in an 8-team UFL, each team could serve as the "farm team" for four nearby NFL franchises. "If you do have a strategic relationship with the NFL, then you get the benefits that come with that from a marketing standpoint," Dempsey said.

XFL Quarter-Final: Bandits Eliminate Red Hot Guardians

June 2, 2008

Tampa, FL - The New York Guardians fell to the Tampa Bay Bandits, 31-24, on Sunday night as the Bandits outlasted the Guardians despite multiple New York rallies. Leading by a touchdown and facing a third-and-five with two minutes remaining, Bandits' QB Gibran Hamdan found RB Josh Scobey for a gain of eight to move the chains. The play essentially sealed the victory for the Bandits, and while the Guardians fought hard throughout, New York was ultimately dealt the end of their season. Tampa Bay jumped out to a 14-point lead through the first 15 minutes of action, as Hamdan tossed a 4-yard touchdown to WR Drew Haddad before finding him again for a 1-yard score two drives later. The Guardians answered with a pair of touchdowns themselves, however, as QB Chris Redman tossed scoring strikes to WR David Givens and TE Sean McHugh to even the score midway through the second quarter.

The Bandits answered with 10 unanswered points of their own to begin the second half, taking a seven-point lead early in the fourth quarter, but New York responded with a 10-play, 75-yard touchdown drive that culminated in a 3-yard scoring reception from Givens. Tampa Bay then responded in short order, however, as Hamdan fired a short pass to RB Avon Cobourne, who turned upfield and avoided would-be tacklers for a 67-yard, go-ahead score. The Guardians couldn't move the chains on their next possession, and they wouldn't possess the ball offensively again as Tampa Bay ran out the clock.

XFL Semi-Final: Mountain Lions Prevent Mammoth's from Fourth Straight Championship

June 9, 2008

Omaha, NE - The demons can relocate to some other team's locker room. QB JT O'Sullivan and HC Dennis Erickson are championship material now. O'Sullivan led the Mountain Lions from 18 points down in the second quarter and on a game-winning 80-yard drive late in the fourth, for a wildly entertaining 38-34 victory Sunday over the Omaha Mammoths to reach the XFL Million Dollar Game. O'Sullivan wouldn't concede that he got a monkey off his back with the win, the biggest in his professional career. "I don't get into monkeys and vindication," he said. "I don't play that card. I know how hard I worked this season, I know how hard I worked this week. I said a little prayer on that last drive, I don't know if you're supposed to pray for stuff like that, but I said a little prayer."

He led the Mountain Lions on an 80-yard drive late in the first half for a field goal to make it 21-6. In the third quarter, he was at his cruel best, dissecting an exhausted Mammoths' defense for a pair of long drives and scores. The first came on a 11-yard slant to WR Paris Warren. The second was capped by a 21-yard pass to WR Freddie Mitchell. "I'm so proud of the way our guys fought," Erickson said. "I'm very happy for JT. He was very, very calm. He had to bring us from behind three or four times. It's just fitting. Our team went the hard way the whole year."

After Salt Lake tied the score, the Mammoths answered with an 80-yard drive, which ended with a 6-yard touchdown pass from QB Brad Banks to WR Frank Murphy. O'Sullivan came right back and found Warren again for the score. After that drive, O'Sullivan could be seen on the sideline, nursing a sore thumb. But he wasn't coming out. "I was a little worried at first, but I went over, made a few warmup throws and it was fine," he said. "I guess adrenaline pulled me through there a little, too." The teams traded field goals, leaving Omaha ahead 34-31 with 3:49 left. After a touchback, it was time for O'Sullivan's drive, concluding in a 29 yard over the shoulder touchdown pass to Mitchell.

-- (9-5-1)Mountain Lions 38 - 34 Mammoths(12-3)
(SLC): QB O'Sullivan - 21/25 426 yards, 5 TDs, RB Smith - 16 carries, 83 yards, WR Warren - 5 catches, 183 yards, 2 TDs, WR Mitchell - 4 catches, 101 yards, 2 TDs

XFL Million Dollar Game: Bandits Brings First XFL Championship to the Eastern Conference

June 16, 2008

Tampa, FL - The Bandits drew first blood with a field goal, but on their next attempt, Bandits' QB Gibran Hamdan led his team 8-play, 79-yard drive that ended with RB Taurean Henderson running the ball in from a yard out. The Mountain Lions tried to respond with a touchdown, but Tampa's defense made them settle for a 39-yard field goal. In the second quarter, Hamdan led his team on a 3-play, 15-yard drive and he concluded it with a 10-yard pass to WR DeAndrew Rubin. Again, Salt Lake City tried to respond with a touchdown of their own, but again, the Tampa defense made them settle for another field goal. Afterwards, the Bandits would quickly respond with a 3-play, 79-yard drive that ended with a 29 yard pass from Hamdan to WR Taylor Jacobs for a touchdown. With only two minutes left until halftime, the Mountain Lions desperately needed a touchdown to keep up with the Bandits. At first, their drive showed promise as they started from their own 44-yard line and managed to get to the 9-yard line. Unfortunately, the drive stalled once Salt Lake got there and they had to settle for another field goal.

At halftime, the Bandits had a comfortable 25–9 lead. In the third quarter, Salt Lake got the ball to begin the second half and on their opening drive and the Mountain Lions managed to get to the 1-yard line. However, on 4th & goal, Salt Lake OL Jacob Bender fumbled the ball and Tampa DL Cedric Killings managed to recover the ball, preventing Salt Lake from another touchdown opportunity. Then Hamdan lead his team on a 10-play, 99-yard drive that ended with him finding Rubin for a 1-yard touchdown strike. Heading into the fourth quarter, the Mountain Lions trailed 32–9 and only a miracle could save any hope of them winning their first XFL title. Alas, the Bandits would just kick a 34-yard field goal to increase their lead and make the score 35–9. Even though Salt Lake would finally respond with a 5-yard touchdown pass from QB JT O'Sullivan to WR Paris Warren and another to WR Freddie Mitchell, it was too little, too late for the Mountain Lions.

-- (10-5-1)Mountain Lions 24 - 45 Bandits(13-3)
(SLC): QB O'Sullivan - 21/31 332 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT, RB Smith - 13 carries, 78 yards, WR Warren - 6 catches, 154 yards, 1 TD, TE Johnson - 4 catches, 82 yards, WR Mitchell - 6 catches, 55 yards, 1 TD
