XFL Week 5: Stallions Rally but Last-second field goal gives Breakers Victory

March 24, 2019

St. Louis, MO - K Donny Hageman kicked a 44-yard field goal as time expired to give the Los Angeles Breakers a wild 27-25 victory over the St. Louis Stallions in Week 5 of the XFL season. Hageman’s third field goal of the night was set up moments earlier by a 45-yard completion from QB Colin Kaepernick to WR Dontez Ford. QB Paxton Lynch had led the Stallions on a 76-yard scoring drive in the closing minutes to go up 25-24 with just under a minute remaining. DB Kameron Kelly had three interceptions, returning one 23 yards for a fourth-quarter touchdown, as Los Angeles improved to 3-2 with the victory.

In the third quarter, Breakers DB Jordan Martin returned a fumble 41 yards for a touchdown to give Los Angeles a 12-11 lead. On the ensuing Stallions drive, Breakers DL Damontre Moore sacked Lynch, forcing and recovering a fumble. The offense capitalized on the turnover when Kaepernick connected with TE Ben Johnson for an 18-yard touchdown and an 18-11 lead. Kaepernick threw for 304 yards and a touchdown. RB Joel Bouagnon ran for two touchdowns to keep the Stallions within striking distance. Lynch overcame three interceptions to lead the Stallions on what seemed to be a game-winning final drive, tossing a 6-yard touchdown pass to TE Nick Truesdell to pull St. Louis within one. Lynch then scrambled and completed a 2-point conversion pass to WR Kenny Bell to give the Stallions a 25-24 lead. Kaepernick, however, drove the Breakers into field goal position and Hageman split the uprights from 44 yards.

XFL Week 5: Landry Jones Picks Apart Faltering Dragons

March 25, 2019

Seattle, WA - The first three quarters of this game saw Oklahoma City and Seattle locked in a defensive battle. The Roughnecks entered the 4th quarter with a 6-3 lead but that soon changed. The 4th quarter started with a 6 yard reception from QB Jimmy Clausen to WR DaVaris Daniels. The conversion was no good which put the score at 9-6 with the Dragons ahead. RB Cameron Artis-Payne then finished off a great Oklahoma City drive with a 21 yard touchdown. The Roughnecks then went for 1 point and their attempt was successful which put Oklahoma City ahead 13-9. Oklahoma City then stopped the Dragons and forced a punt. QB Landry Jones then threw a 3 yard touchdown which put Oklahoma City up 19-9. Jimmy Clausen immediately fired back with a 44 yard touchdown to WR Nelson Spruce. The Roughnecks then put together a nice drive and ended with a 17 yard touchdown run from Artis-Payne to make the score 25-16. The Dragons’ last chance drive was unsuccessful as they turned the ball over on downs.

The Dragons have to feel good about the defense as they were absolutely commanding in the first three quarters only allowing 6 points. The defense forced three turnovers and kept Jones on his toes. The defense was lights out for the first three quarters while the offense struggled and then the roles were reversed. Artis-Payne was lights out finding the end zone twice in the 4th quarter to help the Roughnecks get the win. Much like the Dragons, the Roughnecks defense was a brick wall for the first three quarters only limiting the Dragons to a mere three points and forcing two turnovers.

-- (0-0)Roughnecks 25 - 16 Dragons(0-0)
(OKC): QB Jones - 21/30 305 yards, 1 TD, RB Artis-Payne - 22 carries, 131 yards, 2 TDs, WR Williams - 5 catches, 76 yards, 1 TD

XFL Week 5: Not the Atlanta Betas

March 26, 2019

Atlanta, GA - On the heels of winning their first game in franchise history, the Atlanta Alphas defeated the Ottawa Force 23-20 in a tightly contested Eastern Conference game. Alphas QB Aaron Murray threw for 306 yards and one touchdown, showing his playmaking ability and confidence. With the Force driving for a go-ahead score in the final minutes of the game, Alphas DB Tyson Graham Jr. came up with a clutch interception to give the ball back to the Alphas. Murray engineered a nine-play drive and K Younghoe Koo connected on a game-winning 35-yard FG. It was the second straight game-winning kick for Koo, who went a perfect 3/3 on the day.

Force QB Zach Mettenberger threw for 181 yards and rushed for a touchdown in his second consecutive start. After a key fumble recovery by the Force, Mettenberger got things moving quickly in the first quarter, throwing a 29-yard pass to WR Reece Horn. RB Zac Stacy finished the drive with a seven-yard touchdown run to give the Force a 6-3 lead. The Force carried the momentum into the second quarter, when Mettenberger threw a game-high 56-yard pass to RB Sherman Badie, leading to Stacy's second touchdown of the day, a three-yard rush for a 12-11 lead. The Force were unable to hold onto the lead, falling to 1-4 on the season while The Legends improved to 2-3.

-- (1-3)Force 20 - 23 Alphas(1-3)
(OTT): QB Mettenberger - 9/17 181 yards, 1 INT, RB Stacy - 18 carries, 53 yards, 2 TDs, 2 catches, 45 yards, WR Lucien - 2 catches, 75 yards

XFL Week 5: Rage Defense Sets Tone in Statement win over Steel

March 27, 2019

Birmingham, AL - In the battle between the XFL's best offense and its best defense, defense won the day. It just wasn't the defense people expected to win the day. The Orlando Rage's offense gained 468 total yards against the Birmingham Steel's defense, which came into the game allowing the fewest yards and points in the XFL. But the Rage's dominant performance on defense was what enabled the offense to keep getting on the field and gaining all those yards. Orlando gave up 272 total yards to Birmingham, but just 49 of those were on the ground. Nearly every time it looked like the Steel were taking the momentum, the defense made a play to stop a drive. In the end, that allowed the Rage to walk away from Legion Field with a 31-14 victory and a perfect 5-0 record. Rage head coach Jeff Brohm said after the game that this performance may have been his team's best yet, and is proof Orlando is a contender for the championship. "If we can stay in focus, stay within ourselves, our guys can achieve a lot this year," Brohm said.

Orlando sacked Birmingham's quarterbacks five times, a season high and hurried them seven more. The Steel showed signs of life when QB Louis Perez entered the game to replace Tahj Boyd. He led the team on two scoring drives, one of which marked the Steel's first passing touchdown of the season. Perez threw for 234 yards, but couldn't get the Steel into scoring position more than a couple of times. The performance by Orlando's defense overshadowed the most balanced performance of the season by its offense. Rage QB Garrett Gilbert threw for 286 yards and two touchdowns, and RB D'Ernest Johnson rushed for 119 yards on 14 carries. Fellow RB Akeem Hunt had a big game, as well, with 122 total yards from scrimmage, including 73 receiving. The running game helped Orlando put together long scoring drives, all five of its scoring drives spanned at least 66 yards. The Rage possessed the ball for nearly 35 minutes (34:44) , minimizing any opportunities the Steel may have had to get back in the game. Gilbert said after the game that the Rage maintaining control of the ball began with the offensive line: "I can't say enough about those five guys. Akeem and D'Ernest did a great job running, but that starts with those five up front."

-- (0-0)Rage 31 - 14 Steel(0-0)
(ORL): QB Gilbert - 23/35 286 yards, 2 TDs, RB Smith - 14 carries, 119 yards, RB Johnson - 12 carries, 66 yards, 5 catches, 73 yards, WR Johnson - 6 catches, 83 yards, 1 TD, TE Orndoff - 3 catches, 61 yards

XFL Week 5: San Antonio Commanders Knock off Stampede

March 28, 2019

San Antonio, TX - The San Antonio Commanders turned four first-half turnovers by the Houston Stampede into 18 points to stake a 26-0 halftime lead. In the second half, the Commanders were able to hold onto the lead and beat the Stampede 29-25. Commanders' QB Logan Woodside completed 21 of his 27 passes for a season high 290 yards, in addition to two TDs. San Antonio finished with 367 yards offensively, as they tied their season high in points in the win. Defensively, the Commanders forced five turnovers. Houston ran the ball 29 times for 112 yards and QB Jalen Hurts threw two TDs. DB Derron Smith put the Commanders on the board first with a 66-yard pick-six off Hurts at the 12:25 mark of the first quarter. The interception ended Houston's initial drive of the game that had covered 28 yards in seven plays.

After the Commanders defense forced the Stampede 3-and-out, the San Antonio offense took over on its own 12-yard line and proceeded to put together a 10-play, 88-yard drive that culminated in a 54-yard Woodside to WR Mekale McKay touchdown pass. Woodside ran in the ensuing two-point try to give the visitors a 14-0 lead with less than 10 minutes elapsed off the clock. Reigning Offensive Player of the Week Kenneth Farrow extended the Commanders' lead to 20-0 with a 1-yard TD plunge 2:25 into the second quarter. The drive, which encompassed nine plays and 38 yards, was set up by a DL Jayrone Elliott recovery of a RB Justin Stockton fumble on a 3-and-1 from the 36. Following Smith's second interception of the first half, Woodside found TE Stehly Reden alone across the middle of the end zone for the Commanders' fourth TD of the opening half. The five-yard TD pass, which gave the Commanders' a 26-0 lead, capped San Antonio's 70-yard drive that included a 57-yard Woodside to WR Alonzo Moore connection that set the Commanders up at the 13-yard line.

Houston made it a 26-8 game with 5:31 showing on the third-quarter clock with a 45-yard Hurts to Rashad Ross TD pass. The drive was ignited by an DB Erick Dargen interception of Woodside at the 2-yard line as San Antonio was driving for its fifth TD of the evening. K Nick Folk added three points for the Stampede with 13:04 to play. The 23-yard field goal, trimmed the Commanders' lead to 26-11. San Antonio immediately answered with a field goal of its own as K Nick Rose made his ninth consecutive attempt of the season. The 21-yard field goal was the product of an eight-play, 72-yard drive. Following Rose's successful field goal attempt, Houston drove 59 yards down the field, where Hurts found TE Thomas Duarte for a 4-yard TD pass to cut the lead to 10. On the ensuing onside conversion attempt, Houston fumbled a completed pass that was then recovered by San Antonio. The Commanders took time off the clock but punted the ball back to the Stampede with 2:57 left in the game. With 1:21 left on the game clock, Stampede RB Tim Cook found the end zone. After a failed two-point try, the score sat at 29-25 in favor of the visitors. The Stampede did not convert the onside conversion attempt and the Commanders kneeled out the rest of the clock to secure the victory.

XFL Week 6: Commanders Finish off Atlanta

March 31, 2019

Atlanta, GA - The San Antonio Commanders scored early and never trailed as they defeated the Atlanta Alphas 37-6 in front of 30,619 people at Georgia State Stadium. The Commanders scored 37, and the defense matched its best performance of the year by holding the Alphas to just six points. The San Antonio defense led the way by forcing four turnovers, marking the third straight week with three or more turnovers. DBs De'Vante Bausby, Zack Sanchez and Derron Smith all tallied an interception and DB Duke Thomas recovered a fumble in the victory. Offensively, QB Logan Woodside completed 17 of his 23 passes for 164 yards and two touchdowns, one to WR Mekale McKay and another to TE Evan Rodriguez. Alphas QB Aaron Murray completed 30 passes for 215 yards, in addition to one TD and three interceptions. WRs Keith Towbridge and Seantavius Jones combined for 11 receptions and 80 yards. San Antonio got on the board first when RB Kenneth Farrow scored his third touchdown of the season via a 13-yard rush with 7:45 to go in the first quarter for a 6-0 Commanders' advantage.

On the ensuing drive, the Commanders made the Alphas pay for their second turnover in as many possessions. After Sanchez intercepted a Murray pass, the Commanders marched 48 yards in 12 plays with Woodside finding McKay in the end zone for a 5-yard pass. The two then connected on the 2-point conversion, giving San Antonio a 14-0 lead with 13:35 to play in the opening half. Bausby made it three consecutive Atlanta possessions with a turnover as he picked off Murray on the Alphas first second-quarter possession. The interception was Bausby's league leading fourth of the season. Two plays later Woodside hit Rodriguez in stride down the right side for a 33-yard TD pass. The ensuing conversion attempt failed, putting the Commanders ahead 20-0 with 10 minutes to play before halftime. Atlanta responded with a 13-play, 75-yard drive that consumed 7:18 off the clock and resulted in a Murray to RB Tarean Folston touchdown pass on 4th-and-goal from the 1-yard line. The conversion attempt failed, leaving the Commanders ahead 20-6.

Greg Ward Jr. capped the first half scoring with an Alliance-record 79-yard punt return for a touchdown. Ward Jr. fielded the 42-yard Cameron Nizialek punt at his own 21-yard line, let the blocks set before sprinting untouched down the right sideline. The score gave San Antonio a 26-6 halftime lead. K Nick Rose connected from 23 yards out for his 11th field goal of the season on the Commanders' opening drive of the second half. The drive, which resulted in a 29-6 San Antonio advantage, consumed 80 yards over 11 plays and 6:21 of game time. Two Atlanta drives later, the Commanders came away with a stop inside the red zone with 14:14 to play. Duke Thomas stopped the Legends' Justin Thomas short of the line to gain at the 2-yard line on a 4th-and-7 play.

XFL Week 6: Guardians hand Rage their First loss of the Season

April 1, 2019

Orlando, FL - The Guardians' hunger to save their season proved to be stronger than the Rage's hunger to maintain theirs, and the Guardians handed the Rage their first loss of the season, 22-17. Initially, things looked like they would go well for the Rage, as they have for a good portion of the season. Orlando opened the game with a 12-play, 75-yard scoring drive that took nearly seven minutes. It seemed like the New York defense had no answer for Orlando RB D'Ernest Johnson early on. Then, New York got the ball. While the Guardians struggled to get in the end zone on their first two drives, K Nick Folk managed to hit two 50-plus-yard field goals to tie the game. The Rage answered back with a field goal of their own, but the wheels fell off after that.

Orlando's apparent "bend-but-don't-break" strategy on defense stopped working, and New York put together a long touchdown drive. Then, Rage QB Garrett Gilbert threw his first interception of the season. It didn't lead to any points, but Gilbert, under duress quite often, nearly threw several more the rest of the night. Things didn't get a whole lot better for the Rage in the second half. The offense continued to look out of sync, and Rage LB Terence Garvin, one of the leaders on defense was ejected from the game for throwing a punch. Despite losing Garvin, Orlando's defense responded, stopping New York's offense and giving its own offense multiple opportunities. The Rage finally capitalized on one in the fourth quarter, with a six-play, 98-yard touchdown drive to take the lead with less than 10 minutes to play. New York roared back, scoring a touchdown and a two-point conversion with 5:17 left in the fourth quarter to retake the lead. But, the Rage weren't done yet. They managed to drive down into New York territory, but Gilbert was sacked and fumbled just after the two-minute warning. The Guardians recovered, but Orlando forced a punt with 55 seconds left on the clock. The Rage took over on their own 18-yard line, and after an incomplete pass, Gilbert found TE Sean Price wide open down the right sideline for a 48-yard play. Price managed to get to the New York 34-yard line, but stayed in bounds, which to a spike by Gilbert to stop the clock. Another completion, this one for 236 yards to WR Jalin Marshall, got Orlando down to the 8-yard line with less than 10 seconds to go, but a false-start penalty when the Rage tried to spike the ball led to a 10-second runoff, ending the game.

XFL Week 6: Ghosts get back to Winning

April 2, 2019

Columbus, OH - Up until the fourth quarter, this game was far out of reach. Four first-half turnovers by the Guardians helped add to their 26 point halftime deficit. The Commanders simply blitzed New York with an offensive onslaught in the first half. A late rally by New York falls short by a QB Josh Freeman fumble, a fitting end to a disastrous game. The Commanders held on for a 29-25 victory. This game was decided once the first quarter ended. Freeman and the Guardians offense could not hold on to the football. They turned the ball over four times, including three interceptions thrown by Freeman. On the Guardians first drive of the game, Freeman threw a pick-six that would begin the downward spiral. Freeman finished the half completing 50 percent of his passes for 67 yards and three interceptions.

The Ghosts offense, on the other hand, came out on fire. Ghosts QB Cooper Rush only had one incompletion in that first half, throwing 12 of 13 for 192 yards and two touchdowns. The Ghosts outgained the Guardians 232 to 129 in total yards. Not much changed for most of the second half to make it a close contest. The 26 point lead was just too insurmountable to overcome. Freeman played better in the second half but his first-half mistakes were too much to overcome. New York's offense did come alive though. A bomb from Freeman to WR Reuben Randle and two touchdowns later in the 4th help cut the lead to four. But a late fumble after an onside conversion by Freeman was a fitting end.

XFL Week 6: Bolts Fall on Final Play

April 3, 2019

Los Angeles, CA - Bolts WR Martavis Bryant caught passes of 72, 70 and 40 yards from QB Colin Kaepernick. Bryant has now caught Los Angeles' four longest passes and five of six longest for the Breakers this season (72, 70, 54, 45, 40). WR LaQuvionte Gonzalez (43) has the other. Birmingham QB Luis Perez made his first start of the season. Perez threw for a career-high 359 yards, going 27-for-49 with three touchdowns and two interceptions. Kaepernick played well and passed for 311 yards and finished 17-for-34 with three touchdowns and two interceptions against the Steel. Birmingham's 83-yard touchdown reception from Perez to WR L'Damien Washington was the Steel's longest scoring play this season.

"It's a great feeling, I'll tell you what," said Perez. "To come home, back to California, where I grew up and where I was born and raised. It's a great feeling, especially to be able to do it in front of my family and friends who really support me through everything, through thick and thin. For me to get in and be able to pull off a win as a team like this in front of my hometown is a great feeling."

XFL Week 6: Mountain Lions Defense Maul Force

April 4, 2019

Salt Lake City, UT - The Mountain Lions continued their defensive prowess by grabbing a season high, of seven sacks with DL Karter Schult, DL Chris Odom and Tenny Palepoi each tallying two sacks in the game. The stout defensive unit also accounted for 12 tackles for loss and 12 quarterback hits with two fumble recoveries from DB Will Davis and DL Mike Purcell. On the first Ottawa offensive play of the game, DE Karter Schult pierced the offensive line to account for his sixth (league leading) sack on Force QB Zach Mettenberger who would leave the game immediately with an ankle injury. Mettenberger would not return. Salt Lake started out strong offensively in the opening quarter jumping to an early 16-0 lead at the hands of QB Josh Woodrum completing an 11-yard touchdown pass to TE Nick Truesdell on the game's opening drive. Continuing with the league's highest 2-point conversion rate, Woodrum capitalized the drive when hitting WR Jordan Leslie for the two-point conversion. Salt Lake continued with their first quarter flurry by capping off a 44-yard scoring drive with a 14-yard touchdown from Woodrum to TE Anthony Denham. RB Terrell Newby caught a pass from Woodrum would boast to a career high 123.7 passer rating when Mountain Lions converted their second consecutive two-point conversion to take a 16-0 lead heading into the second quarter. Following a key defensive stop following on a surprise Memphis fake-punt, K Taylor Bertolet made his fifth field goal of the season to put the Mountain Lions up 19-0.

Ottawa responded by scoring the final nine points of the quarter. K Austin MacGinnis connected on a 31-yard attempt with 3:52 left in the second quarter. The Force rebounded on a Mountain Lions turnover, leading to their first and only touchdown of the game where QB Brandon Silvers threw an 11-yard pass to RB Zac Stacy. A defensive battle ensued for the second half, where the only additional points from the Mountain Lions would come from Bertolet on a 22-yard field goal in the fourth quarter, solidifying the Mountain Lions.

Manziel is Back in the XFL

April 6, 2019

Ottawa, ONTARIO, CANADA - Johnny Football is heading to Ottawa to resume his football career. Former Memphis Express QB Johnny Manziel signed with the XFL and will join the Ottawa Force. In Ottawa, Manziel could get an opportunity to play quickly. Force QB Zach Mettenberger was injured and unable to return to the team's 22-9 loss at Salt Lake and his status is uncertain. Mettenberger had replaced Christian Hackenberg as the Force starter, so head coach Mike Singletary could look to Manziel to lead his squad. QB Brandon Silvers was released to make room on the roster for Manziel.

XFL Week 7: Force defeat Steel 31-25 in Overtime

April 7, 2019

Ottawa, ONTARIO, CANADA - QB Johnny Manziel went 24-for-35 passing for 266 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winner to wide receiver Dan Williams on a 10-yard slant in his return to the XFL. After the defense stopped the Steel offense on the first possession of overtime, Manziel stayed calm and knew he had the game won. It's a confidence that has been with him since he started playing football. Force head coach Mike Singletary gave the game ball to Manziel as his teammates mobbed him in the locker room following the victory. "I guess you can say I was born with it," Manziel said about his calmness in late-game situations. "I've led a lot of game-winning drives back in high school and at Texas A&M. I'm just happy to get back in there, have some drives and get the opportunity to win the game."

Singletary knew all week that Manziel was going to be the starting quarterback. Singletary said the plan was to start Manziel and give Hackenberg some playing time during the game. After the game, it was clear to Singletary that Manziel earned the opportunity to play in the future. "Right now, Brandon is our quarterback," Singletary said. "I'm very excited about what Johnny does and what he brings to the team."

The Ottawa Force scored the final 17 points of the game after trailing 25-14 with 9:01 left in regulation. The performance of Manziel, the Force defense getting pressure on Steel QB Luis Perez and big plays on special teams carried Ottawa to its second win of the season. "I'm really thankful for our guys. It was a complete team win," Singletary said. "We executed and fought for four quarters and we played tough until the end."

The momentum of the game started to change late in the third quarter when LB DeMarquis Gates blocked an Steel punt and DB Terrell Bonds ran it back 50 yards for the touchdown. Creating turnovers and getting stops on third down has been a key focus for the Force defense this season. The Force defense and special teams did that to earn their upset win. "When we had opportunity to make plays to change the game, we did that," Singletary said. "That blocked punt changed the game for us. It was a great play and I'm proud of the way our defense and special teams fought the entire game."

With the win, the Force kept their hopes alive for the playoffs and found new life thanks to Manziel and heroics on defense and special teams. It was a complete effort for the Force, something the players and coaches preached all week. "Today was really good for us," Manziel said. "We did great things on both sides of the ball and I'm really proud of our guys. What a win."

XFL Week 7: Rage rout Alphas

April 8, 2019

Atlanta, GA - Led by RB D'Ernest Johnson's three rushing touchdowns, Orlando beat the Atlanta Alphas at Georgia State Stadium in Atlanta 36-6. The Alphas have improved a great deal since losing to the Rage 40-6 in Week 1 and in the first half of this week's game, it looked like things would be close. There were just six combined possessions in the first half, due to long, sustained drives by both offenses. Orlando QB Garrett Gilbert and Atlanta QB Aaron Murray completed a combined 86 percent of their passes in a first half where it seemed both defenses tried to take away the big play while allowing things to work underneath.
Any hope of a close game disappeared in the second half when Atlanta turned the ball over twice to end promising drives. The first came in the third quarter, when Rage DB Deji Olatoye intercepted a pass from Murray and returned it 65 yards for a touchdown. That put Orlando up 28-6 and it was all Rage from there.

Murray would throw another interception on the Alphas' next possession, this one to DB Cody Riggs at the Rage's goal line. He was then replaced at quarterback by Matt Simms. Gilbert added a touchdown pass to WR Charles Johnson in the fourth quarter and the Rage ran out the clock from there.

XFL Week 7: Commanders Score Late to Beat Salt Lake

April 10, 2019

San Antonio, TX - RB Trey Williams' 36-yard touchdown reception and WR Greg Ward Jr.'s two-point conversion catch with less than six minutes remaining helped lift San Antonio to a 19-15 victory over St. Louis in front of 50,345 fans at the Alamodome. Williams took a short pass from reserve QB Marquise Williams, who entered the game in the fourth quarter for injured starter Logan Woodside, sprinted down the right sideline and leaped into the end zone for the go-ahead score. Williams then found Ward Jr. for a successful two-point conversion to put San Antonio up 17-9 with 5:29 left to play. On the ensuing possession, the Stallions drove 75 yards to make it a two-point contest after WR Terrell Newby's 21-yard TD reception from QB Paxton Lynch on the first play following the two-minute warning. St. Louis had a chance to tie the score on the two-point try but DB De'Vante Bausby stepped in front of Lynch's pass in the left flat and returned it untouched to make it 19-15.

St. Louis elected to not take an onside conversion and San Antonio got one first down and ran out the clock to ice the win and remain in the thick of the playoff race. Neither team could muster much offense in a game controlled by the defenses, as the Stallions outgained the Commanders, 263-240. St. Louis opened the scoring with a K Taylor Bertolet field goal from 32 yards on the game's opening possession. Woodside completed a 21-yard pass caught over the shoulder in the corner of the end zone by WR Mekale McKay to get the Commanders on the board with 4:42 left in first quarter, but Bertolet drilled a 53-yard field goal early in the second stanza to knot the score at 6-6. The Commanders took a three-point lead into halftime. A defensive holding penalty on a field-goal attempt gave San Antonio first-and-goal at the 4-yard line late in the first half, but a false start penalty forced the home team to settle for a 23-yard field goal by K Nick Rose. Bertolet again tied the score with his leg, as the former Texas A&M place-kicker split the uprights from 52 yards with 9:20 left in the third quarter to make it 9-9.

XFL Week 7: No Breaks for Berlin

April 11, 2019

Los Angeles, CA - It was rough from the beginning for the Pittsburgh Maulers as they were penalized for a false start on the first snap of the game. They did recover to score the opening touchdown, but they wouldn't be able to find the end zone nearly enough as the game wore on. The Los Angeles Breakers answered on the following drive when QB Trevor Knight came in for a designed run at quarterback and dove into the end zone to tie the game at 6-6. A couple of field goals later, the Breakers took a 17-9 lead on a 36-yard pass from QB Colin Kaepernick to TE Thomas Duarte. While the Maulers brought the warm and fuzzies on the CBS Sports Network broadcast, the Breakers poured on the points, extending their lead to 23-9 ahead of the two-minute warning in the second quarter with a 15-yard Kaepernick pass to WR Deion Holliman.

The final minute of the first half took a turn in the Mauler's direction when Kaepernick was intercepted by Kelly with 46 seconds left. Pittsburgh converted the turnover into a 38-yard touchdown pass over the middle between two defenders from QB Matt McGloin to TE Marcus Baugh, cutting the Los Angeles' lead to 23-15 at halftime. Baugh's touchdown was then reviewed after he appeared to chuck the ball before crossing the goal line, but officials upheld the score. And the score would stay that way until Kaepernick took off for a 35-yard rushing touchdown with a little over six minutes to go in the game. The Breakers would ultimately treat their home fans to a 32-15 win.

XFL Week 8: Commanders Fall to Aztecs

April 14, 2019

San Antonio, TX - New York used a stingy defense and a 200-yard passing night from QB Josh Freeman to down San Antonio 23-6 in front of 23,504 fans at the Alamodome. Freeman completed 17 of his 23 passes for 216 yards and a touchdown while the Guardians held the Commanders out of the end zone for the first time this season. San Antonio outgained New York 305-300, posted a 38:03-21:57 advantage in time of possession and was just two yards shy of a season high with 173 rushing yards but the Commanders were limited to a pair of K Nick Rose field goals. New York struck first when Freeman found WR Rashad Ross open on a deep pass over the middle for a 58-yard touchdown strike with 9:18 left in the opening quarter. The Guardians stretched their lead to 9-0 after settling for a 25-yard field goal by K Nick Folk early in the second stanza following an 11-play, 74-yard drive that took 6:34 off the clock. New York then took advantage of a 38-yard interception return by DB Dexter McDougle to the San Antonio 13-yard line. Four plays later, RB Tim Cook dashed six yards off left tackle to pay dirt to make it 15-0.

Rose got the Commanders on the board in the final minute of the first half with a season-long 54-yard field goal. Rose remained perfect on 14 kicks this season after splitting the uprights from 35 yards to make it 15-6 midway through the third quarter. San Antonio put together a time-consuming drive that reached the New York red zone midway through the final quarter. Facing third down at the 18-yard line, reserve QB Marquise Williams dropped back to pass but was sacked and stripped of the ball by DB Da'Sean Downey. New York then put the game away by marching 69 yards on just six plays, the last a 20-yard touchdown scamper by Cook. The two-point conversion pass from Wolford to Connor Hamlett made it 23-6 with 4:16 left to play.

XFL Week 8: More Defense in Birmingham

April 15, 2019

Birmingham, AL - The Alphas traveled to Birmingham and the Steel were victorious in a game defined by defense. Both teams combined for eight sacks, two interceptions and allowed just six third-down conversions in 28 attempts. The Steel's third-quarter goal line stand proved to be the defining moment of the game, stopping the Alphas at the one-yard line to maintain a 14-9 lead. Steel RB Trent Richardson scored the only touchdown of the game and Alphas K Younghoe Koo converted all three field goal attempts, continuing his perfect kicking season.

Midway through the second quarter, with the score tied 3-3, Richardson scored his league-leading 11th rushing touchdown of the season for an 11-3 lead. On the next Steel possession, the Alphas' defense forced a Richardson fumble with 4:20 left in the half. Koo cut the lead to 11-6 at the half with his second field goal of the day. Alphas QB Aaron Murray drove to the Steel's two-yard line with a chance to take the lead. On fourth and goal, Murray scrambled and dove for the end zone, but Steel DB Max Redfield stopped him short. With 3:49 remaining, Alphas LB Jeff Luc tallied his third sack of the day. The sack was not enough, as the Steel forced turnovers on the Alphas final two possessions to secure the win.

XFL Week 8: Turnovers Cause No Upset

April 16, 2019

Memphis, TN - The Express played easily their best game of the season, moving the ball on the Rage and creating takeaways on defense. And, yet, penalties and special teams mishaps doomed them in the end, preventing the upset bid. With both sides exchanging points, the game really began to change in Orlando's favor when Memphis punter Ryan Winslow bobbled a snap, giving the Rage the ball on the 26-yard line. Shortly thereafter, RB D'Ernest Johnson plunged into the end zone for a touchdown. Though the call was initially short, the SkyJudge overturned the ruling and gave Orlando the lead with under two minutes to play.

Finally, Memphis QB Brandon Silvers was picked off as he tried to get rid of the ball as Memphis tried to rally. That allowed Orlando to run out the clock. Silvers had played well finishing the game with 269 yards and a touchdown. His lone mistake ended up being costly. All in all, it was a sloppy, heated game with the teams combining for 25 penalties for 259 yards. Orlando QB Garrett Gilbert also had a streaky day with 310 yards passing and a pair of touchdowns, but also two interceptions (and another two called back because of defensive penalties). Those kinds of mistakes are uncharacteristic of Orlando. This easily could have been an Express win and undoubtedly they feel they should have won.

XFL Week 8: Ugly game in Salt Lake

April 18, 2019

Salt Lake City, UT - The low scoring affair came at the hands of both clubs trading three turnovers each, accounted from two interceptions and a fumble recovery on each side. The typical stout defensive performance by the Stallions remained in full force, holding the Mammoths offense to only 54 total yards rushing on the night. However, it was the first game in the season where Stallions did not account for a single sack. After a decisive opening drive into the Mammoths red zone, Woodrum would sail a pass down the right sideline to trigger an exchange of possessions to keep the game scoreless at the end of the first quarter. With under two minutes in the second quarter, the Stallions took the lead on a botched center exchange on the Mammoths goal line, causing RB Joel Buoagnon to shoot an inadvertent gap to find the end zone. On the ensuing 2-point conversion, Woodrum would find WR Jordan Leslie in the back of the end zone to put the Stallions up 8-0 heading into the half.

The second half would mirror the first with missed opportunities on both sides. Following an exchange of possessions, the Mammoths would find a rhythm driving the ball deep into the Stallions end zone, only to find Omaha K Donny Hageman missing a 25- yard field goal wide left. Third down efficiency proved to be a struggle, as both clubs combined converted only 1/9 third down attempts. Early in the fourth quarter, the Mammoths would kickstart another drive to move the ball deep into Stallions territory, only to stall and hit a 29-yard field goal to narrow the score to 8-3, with under 11 minutes to play in the game. Penalties would extend the ensuing Stallions drive, however an exchange of punts would follow a Mammoths three-and-out with nearly five minutes left in the game. The Mammoths who would aim to mount a two-minute drive to potentially take the lead with little time on the clock. Bercovici would convert a game-deciding 4th and 12 with a 23-yard pass to Mammoths TE Marcus Baugh to put the Fleet in prime position with under a minute left in the game. But on the a 2nd-and-10 on the Stallions 30-yard line, Bercovici would throw his second interception of the night down the right sideline intended for Omaha WR Brian Brown. Stallions seal the victory with a final score of 8-3.

San Diego Fleet to have Coaching Staff Filled with NFL Names

June 1, 2019

San Diego, CA - The XFL is planning to bring professional football back to San Diego with former St. Louis Rams head coach Mike Martz serving as the head coach of the franchise and Martz’s coaching staff will be filled with many prominent names with NFL backgrounds as well. Jon Kitna will serve as the team’s offensive coordinator with former Rams and Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Larry Marmie serving as the team’s defensive coordinator. Hall of Fame offensive lineman Jackie Slater, T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Dre Bly will also coach on Martz’s staff.

"I have a great deal of respect for what each of these coaches have accomplished and experienced throughout their careers and this group will help ensure that we put the best possible football product on the field each weekend in San Diego," said Martz. "We have a unique opportunity to provide our players with a dynamic staff that can help shape their careers in ways no other league can provide. Just as the XFL is a opportunity for players to begin, extend or continue their careers, this league also provides the same opportunity for coaches to advance their careers. With my coaching staff taking shape, we are getting closer and closer to bringing pro football back to the great city of San Diego."

Oakland Panthers Join XFL with Owner Marshawn Lynch

September 10, 2019

Oakland, CA - The Oakland Panthers will join the XFL and play eight home games at the Oakland Coliseum in the Spring of 2020. The team is founded by NFL legend and Oakland-native Marshawn Lynch, along with Roy Choi, an entertainment and gaming entrepreneur and West Coast Sports & Entertainment LLC. The Panthers have also named longtime sports executive Scott McKibben as its President and general manager.

Team co-owner Marshawn Lynch said, "I believe the power of football has the ability to transform a community and the families who live there. I've seen it and lived it. I'm excited that Da' Town will get another team to call its own. I attended some XFL games last year and had a good ass time. The games have lots of fluidity and tickets are priced so that the entire family can check it out. I was blessed with my time and journey making it to the league but there are more ways of getting there than the route I took, so its hella important to me, to keep finding opportunities for players to pursue their dreams of getting to that next level and I know the Panthers and this league can help with that."

Naming the team as the Oakland Panthers is no accident. The Oakland community has a long history with the name. It references the Bay Area indigenous cougar and the recent blockbuster superhero film (directed by Oakland native Ryan Coogler). It also pays tribute to Oakland's history of activism with the groundbreaking social action of the Black Panther movement of the '60s.

Co-founder Roy Choi, already the owner of two IFL franchises, adds, "Oakland and the Bay Area embody activism, work ethic, passion, and loyalty. Those qualities are represented by the Panther name and by my co-founder Marshawn Lynch. While I am obviously impressed by his on-field performance, it is his community work that is the most inspiring. There is no one better than Marshawn to lead such a community-oriented sports franchise like the Oakland Panthers. Additionally, we're also exploring ways the community can also have ownership in our team."

The Oakland Panthers franchise will support its athletes in a unique manner. Given the challenges of Bay Area housing prices, the Panthers will not only provide salaries for players, but the team will also provide lodging and meals during the season. Lodging and practice facilities will be located in the East Bay.

NFL Network to Televise 16 XFL Games

September 23, 2019

New York, NY - The XFL and NFL Network announced a multi-year programming deal that will include live event coverage of the XFL's 20th season. "NFL Network understands the mission and vision for the XFL and what we are accomplishing," said Dick Ebersol, co-founder. "This partnership will now keep professional football on weekdays on the NFL Network, allowing fans more opportunities to continue watching America's most popular sport."

"Having live football games on NFL Network in February, March, April and May will be a great addition to our lineup and a nice complement to our coverage of the NFL Combine and NFL Draft," said Mark Quenzel, Senior Vice President of Programming and Production at NFL Network.

Relationship between XFL and NFL grows but There’s No Investment, Yet

December 2, 2019

New York, NY - The NFL sees a clear benefit in broadcasting 16 XFL games this season. “There’s no investment,” NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy in response to the question of whether the league or any owners have invested in the XFL. “It’s a programming partnership with the XFL. The XFL provides another opportunity for players, coaches, officials, personnel people to get valuable experience,” McCarthy said. “The XFL, demonstrate the strength of the game and the health of football as entertainment. They reflect substantial investments and major commitments by serious and credible football and business people.”

Montreal Alouettes Find Ownership Group

January 9, 2020

Montreal, ONTARIO, CANADA - The CFL announced this morning that the Montreal Alouettes have been purchased by Clifford Starke, a 35 year old entrepreneur in medical cannabis and friend with former league commissioner Larry Smith, as the majority owner. The league had been running the team since former owner Robert C. Wetenhall sold the franchise in May. The favorites to buy the team were originally believed to be S and S Sportsco LLC with Gary Stern and Sid Spiegel as the majority owners. However, last month the group stated that they were displeased with the state of the Alouettes organization, the CFL and if they weren't Montreal residents they wouldn't have even considered the purchase.

Birmingham Steel Land Their Quarterback

January 27, 2020

Birmingham, AL - The National Champion winning Clemson Tiger QB Trevor Lawrence has decided to forego his junior season at the college level to play professionally for the Birmingham Steel. Lawrence is projected to be the #1 overall selection in the 2021 NFL Draft, which he intends to enter after completing his two-year $4M contract with the Steel.

Lawrence won the starting job for the Tigers midway through his freshman season, leading them to an undefeated season that ended with a victory in the 2019 National Championship Game. As a sophomore, he led Clemson to another undefeated regular season before being defeated by LSU in the 2020 National Championship Game.

Birmingham Iron owner Jim Speros, a Clemson alum, was going to make sure he got this deal done after his Steel once again fell short of the XFL Championship in July.

Brawlers name P.J. Walker starting QB over Connor Cook

February 5, 2020

Philadelphia, PA - Former Temple star P.J. Walker will be the starting quarterback for the XFL's Philadelphia Brawlers this season after winning a competition with former Raiders quarterback Connor Cook. The Brawlers officially named Walker their starter three days before their season opener against the Los Angeles Breakers. The 5-foot-11 Walker played under current Carolina Panthers coach Matt Rhule at Temple and led the Owls to back-to-back 10-win seasons in 2015 and 2016.

"I'm an undersized QB so I'm always going to carry a chip on my shoulder," Walker said. "I am always going to walk on the field like I am the best player on the field."

XFL Week 1: Valor Freeze Bandits with Big Plays

February 6, 2020

Washington, DC - Playing in-front of a home crowd estimated at 37,000, the Washington Valor edged the Tampa Bay Bandits, 31-19. Although both teams leaned heavily on their running games, with a total of 49 carries between them, the defenses made their mark for the Valor, with 43 combined tackles, two interceptions, a sack and a blocked punt. With the secondary leading the way, it tallied nine pass deflections and two interceptions. Despite a slow start for Washington that saw Tampa take an early 6-3 lead, DB Rahim Moore made a decisive read to intercept Bandits QB Brandon Silvers with 10:30 left in the second quarter. "We had a good week of practice, great film study, our calls were on-point from the defensive coordinator," Moore said. "The good thing about it though was that we were able to see who we were going up against. Our D-line was on point tonight. Our linebackers were communicating, flying around, making tackles."

Washington's defense continued with a blocked punt by DB Elijah Campbell later in the second quarter that was scooped up for a score by DB Jonathan Celestin to give the Valor a 9-6 lead. It also spurred the offense to loosen up and start moving the ball consistently. Tampa went ahead 13-9 after a 13-yard touchdown pass from Silvers to RB JaQuan Gardner and the subsequent 1-point conversion with 20 seconds left in the half, but the Valor got back within a point on a 55-yard field goal from K Ty Rausa with five seconds left in the half to make it 13-12. Washington QB Cardale Jones helped the Valor keep pace with the up-tempo Bandits with two third-quarter touchdown passes to carve out a 25-19 lead. Seattle was driving early in the fourth quarter, but DB Shamarko Thomas stepped in front of a Silvers pass intended for WR Austin Proehl and returned it for a 69-yard touchdown to give the Valor some breathing room. Washington clamped down on the Bandits' last two offensive drives for the victory. "You practice how you play," Thomas said. "It was the same exact play as in practice, so the moment I saw the quarterback's shoulders turn my way, I'm like, 'Man, this all she wrote right here.' It's nothing but dog work man. I knew the ball was coming out high. They thought I was in 'Cover 2' but I disguised it; I was in man. When I saw him about to let loose, I broke on the ball."

XFL Week 1: Walker Dazzles in Season Opener

February 7, 2020

Philadelphia, PA - In the third game of the XFL's season, Walker led the Brawlers to a dominant 37-17 victory over the Chicago Enforcers. Walker got things started early, making use of the XFL's by-design fast tempo with a 50-yard bomb to WR Cam Phillips, the Brawlers' leading receiver on the night, to put Philadelphia up 6-0 within two minutes of kickoff. A quarter later, with the Brawlers down 14-6, Walker's "magic" continued when he connected with RB James Butler for a 16-yard score to put Philadelphia within two. Walker played well in front of over 37,000 fans, tossing for 272 yards en route to a four-touchdown performance that had his concerned coach surprised. "I was kind of anxious to see him when the play breaks down to create things," offensive coordinator June Jones said. "He did create a lot of stuff. That was his magic in college, too."

Many of Walker's highlights, including his 39-yard, go-ahead touchdown pass to WR Sam Mobley towards the end of the second quarter to put Philadelphia up 18-17, also had fans shocked. "I just learned so much, man," Walker said of how much he's picked up watching other professional players. "Seeing how these guys develop into really good football players and the way they process the game the way that they do, I'm just trying to model my game the same way." The quarterback took two more successful shots at the end zone in the Brawlers' victory, hitting WR Khalil Lewis for a 4-yard score set up by Walker's 29-yard completion to WR Sammie Coates and another 4-yarder to Butler for his final touchdown pass of the night. For Walker, who also rushed for 26 yards in the game, to be able to play with the Brawlers, and the chance to continue winning, is thrilling, and he promised Philadelphia will continue rolling. "I was out there having fun and embracing the moment," Walker said. "It was just amazing to have the opportunity to go out there and play a live football game. I'm excited. I think we got a great team. I think we know who we got in front of us. I don't think we're going to take our foot off the gas pedal at all."

XFL Week 1: Football Returns to San Diego

February 8, 2020

San Diego, CA - The XFL got exactly what they wanted from their Week 1 games, especially their headliner of the return of football to San Diego. The league had former XFL stars Tommy Maddox and Rod Smart as the 20 year anniversary honorary captains for the coin toss and it was the perfect amount of nostalgia to get the crowd in the game from the get go. Maddox played for the XFL's Los Angeles Stars and Smart played for the Las Vegas Outlaws.

Panthers QB Brett Hundley got off to perfect start in the first quarter running the offense with his two touchdown passes to WR Dorial Green-Beckham to give Oakland a 14-0 lead after one. However, the Fleet narrowed the gap to 14-6 by halftime. In the late parts of the 3rd quarter, nursing a 14-9 lead, Hundley forced a throw into coverage that Fleet DB Bradley Sylve intercepted and returned for a touchdown making the game 15-14. Hundley then fired back and led the Panthers down the field, ending the drive with a TE De'Quan Hampton touchdown catch putting the Panthers back up 21-15. QB Josh Johnson then hit WR Nelson Spruce in stride for an 67 yard touchdown catch to give San Diego a 22-21 lead with 3:13 left. But Hundley was not to be denied on this night, he passed for 71 yards and finished with a QB sneak on the final drive to give Oakland the 27-22 victory in front of the 42,679 Fleet fans in San Diego.

XFL Week 1: Crusaders Spoil Roughnecks Hopes

February 9, 2020

Oklahoma City, OK - It wasn't pretty. Much like the weather, the season opener between the Oklahoma City Roughnecks and London Crusaders was far from perfect. Not that the Crusaders are complaining, leaving with a 15-9 victory that has a way of warming the soul. "We fought very hard," London coach Jonathan Hayes said. "Defense played really well, offense ran the ball when we needed to, and we really set the tone of the game." QB Jordan Ta'amu's 9-yard strike to WR Alonzo Russell in the back of the end zone early in the fourth quarter proved the difference on the scoreboard. That was hardly the whole story. Defensive coordinator Jay Hayes' unit deserves plenty of credit for slowing down the Roughnecks "Air Raid" attack as Oklahoma City managed only three field goals. Ta'amu did enough in his professional debut. The Ole Miss product completed 20 of 27 passes for 207 yards and added 77 yards on the ground, with his lone touchdown pass with 13:18 left giving London a 12-9 lead. Ta'amu's ability to extend plays helped lead to both touchdown drives. "One of my strengths was being able to use my legs when I had nothing down field," he said. "That kind of opened up our offense a lot. They had to worry about our receivers, our great running backs and the quarterback on top of it. Being able to use my feet was another weapon."

The Crusaders rolled up 191 yards rushing. RB Matt Jones racked up a team-high 85 yards on 21 carries. RB Keith Ford chipped in with a 16-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Oklahoma City managed only 267 yards on 59 plays, an average of 4.5 yard per pop. The Roughnecks had only two plays of more than 13 yards. "You can't allow big plays because big plays dictate the momentum of the game," said Crusaders DB Dexter McCoil, who had a sack and eight tackles. "You get points off big plays." Roughnecks offensive coordinator Hal Mumme's signature "Air Raid" didn't take flight. Maybe it had something to do with backup QB Brogan Roback starting in place of Landry Jones. London's defense also played a part. The Roughnecks punted five times. The only three drives to make a dent ended in field goals. "Too many field goals get you beat," Roughnecks head coach Bob Stoops said. "You've got to be able to put the ball in the end zone and we didn't do that." Stoops refused to pin the loss on Roback. "Some of the inconsistency isn't on him," Stoops said. "We've got to be able to convert in the red zone."

(LON): QB Ta'amu - 20/27 209 yards, 1 TD, 9 carries, 77 yards, RB Jones - 21 carries, 85 yards, WR Washington - 4 catches, 64 yards, WR Russell - 3 catches, 49 yards, 1 TD, TE Lucas - 4 catches, 40 yards

XFL Week 1: Mammoths turn the ball over 3 times, lose 23-3 to Guardians

February 9, 2020

New York, NY - The Omaha Mammoths did not get the start to the season they were hoping for, falling to the New York Guardians in their season opener, 23-3. The Mammoths turned the ball over three times and failed to get any more than a field goal in the first game of the year. QB Aaron Murray completed 16 of 34 passes for 231 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions. QB Quinton Flowers did come into the game for a few plays throughout the game and completed one of two passes for 37 yards. He also rushed five times for 34 yards. “Our play today was unacceptable," Mammoths head coach Marc Trestman said. "We turned the ball over three or four times. We didn’t tackle as well as we needed to tackle in the first half. When you have over 400 yard of offense and come up with three points, your play is just not acceptable.”

The Alphas got into the red zone four times and failed to get into the end zone. Guardians QB Josh Freeman had two total touchdowns on the day, but it was a late defensive touchdown that sealed the game for New York. Freeman completed 15 of 29 passes for 182 yards with one score to WR Coby Pearson. New York’s defense flustered the Mammoths offense, forcing them into four turnovers, including a pair of turnovers on downs in the fourth quarter.
