XFL Week 5: Stallions Rally but Last-second field goal gives Breakers Victory
March 24, 2019
St. Louis, MO - K Donny Hageman kicked a 44-yard field goal as time expired to give the Los Angeles Breakers a wild 27-25 victory over the St. Louis Stallions in Week 5 of the XFL season. Hageman’s third field goal of the night was set up moments earlier by a 45-yard completion from QB Colin Kaepernick to WR Dontez Ford. QB Paxton Lynch had led the Stallions on a 76-yard scoring drive in the closing minutes to go up 25-24 with just under a minute remaining. DB Kameron Kelly had three interceptions, returning one 23 yards for a fourth-quarter touchdown, as Los Angeles improved to 3-2 with the victory.
In the third quarter, Breakers DB Jordan Martin returned a fumble 41 yards for a touchdown to give Los Angeles a 12-11 lead. On the ensuing Stallions drive, Breakers DL Damontre Moore sacked Lynch, forcing and recovering a fumble. The offense capitalized on the turnover when Kaepernick connected with TE Ben Johnson for an 18-yard touchdown and an 18-11 lead. Kaepernick threw for 304 yards and a touchdown. RB Joel Bouagnon ran for two touchdowns to keep the Stallions within striking distance. Lynch overcame three interceptions to lead the Stallions on what seemed to be a game-winning final drive, tossing a 6-yard touchdown pass to TE Nick Truesdell to pull St. Louis within one. Lynch then scrambled and completed a 2-point conversion pass to WR Kenny Bell to give the Stallions a 25-24 lead. Kaepernick, however, drove the Breakers into field goal position and Hageman split the uprights from 44 yards.

XFL Week 5: Landry Jones Picks Apart Faltering Dragons
March 25, 2019
Seattle, WA - The first three quarters of this game saw Oklahoma City and Seattle locked in a defensive battle. The Roughnecks entered the 4th quarter with a 6-3 lead but that soon changed. The 4th quarter started with a 6 yard reception from QB Jimmy Clausen to WR DaVaris Daniels. The conversion was no good which put the score at 9-6 with the Dragons ahead. RB Cameron Artis-Payne then finished off a great Oklahoma City drive with a 21 yard touchdown. The Roughnecks then went for 1 point and their attempt was successful which put Oklahoma City ahead 13-9. Oklahoma City then stopped the Dragons and forced a punt. QB Landry Jones then threw a 3 yard touchdown which put Oklahoma City up 19-9. Jimmy Clausen immediately fired back with a 44 yard touchdown to WR Nelson Spruce. The Roughnecks then put together a nice drive and ended with a 17 yard touchdown run from Artis-Payne to make the score 25-16. The Dragons’ last chance drive was unsuccessful as they turned the ball over on downs.
The Dragons have to feel good about the defense as they were absolutely commanding in the first three quarters only allowing 6 points. The defense forced three turnovers and kept Jones on his toes. The defense was lights out for the first three quarters while the offense struggled and then the roles were reversed. Artis-Payne was lights out finding the end zone twice in the 4th quarter to help the Roughnecks get the win. Much like the Dragons, the Roughnecks defense was a brick wall for the first three quarters only limiting the Dragons to a mere three points and forcing two turnovers.

XFL Week 5: Not the Atlanta Betas
March 26, 2019
Atlanta, GA - On the heels of winning their first game in franchise history, the Atlanta Alphas defeated the Ottawa Force 23-20 in a tightly contested Eastern Conference game. Alphas QB Aaron Murray threw for 306 yards and one touchdown, showing his playmaking ability and confidence. With the Force driving for a go-ahead score in the final minutes of the game, Alphas DB Tyson Graham Jr. came up with a clutch interception to give the ball back to the Alphas. After a key fumble recovery by the Force, Mettenberger got things moving quickly in the first quarter, throwing a 29-yard pass to WR Reece Horn. XFL Week 5: Rage Defense Sets Tone in Statement win over Steel
March 27, 2019
Birmingham, AL - In the battle between the XFL's best offense and its best defense, defense won the day. It just wasn't the defense people expected to win the day. The Orlando Rage's offense gained 468 total yards against the Birmingham Steel's defense, which came into the game allowing the fewest yards and points in the XFL. But the Rage's dominant performance on defense was what enabled the offense to keep getting on the field and gaining all those yards. Orlando gave up 272 total yards to Birmingham, but just 49 of those were on the ground. Nearly every time it looked like the Steel were taking the momentum, the defense made a play to stop a drive. In the end, that allowed the Rage to walk away from Legion Field with a 31-14 victory and a perfect 5-0 record. Rage head coach Jeff Brohm said after the game that this performance may have been his team's best yet, and is proof Orlando is a contender for the championship. "If we can stay in focus, stay within ourselves, our guys can achieve a lot this year," Brohm said.
Orlando sacked Birmingham's quarterbacks five times, a season high and hurried them seven more. The Steel showed signs of life when QB Louis Perez entered the game to replace Tahj Boyd. He led the team on two scoring drives, one of which marked the Steel's first passing touchdown of the season. Perez threw for 234 yards, but couldn't get the Steel into scoring position more than a couple of times. The performance by Orlando's defense overshadowed the most balanced performance of the season by its offense. Rage QB Garrett Gilbert threw for 286 yards and two touchdowns, and RB D'Ernest Johnson rushed for 119 yards on 14 carries. Fellow RB Akeem Hunt had a big game, as well, with 122 total yards from scrimmage, including 73 receiving. The running game helped Orlando put together long scoring drives, all five of its scoring drives spanned at least 66 yards. The Rage possessed the ball for nearly 35 minutes (34:44) , minimizing any opportunities the Steel may have had to get back in the game. Gilbert said after the game that the Rage maintaining control of the ball began with the offensive line: "I can't say enough about those five guys. Akeem and D'Ernest did a great job running, but that starts with those five up front."

XFL Week 5: San Antonio Commanders Knock off Stampede
March 28, 2019
San Antonio, TX - The San Antonio Commanders turned four first-half turnovers by the Houston Stampede into 18 points to stake a 26-0 halftime lead. In the second half, the Commanders were able to hold onto the lead and beat the Stampede 29-25. Commanders' QB Logan Woodside completed 21 of his 27 passes for a season high 290 yards, in addition to two TDs. San Antonio finished with 367 yards offensively, as they tied their season high in points in the win. Defensively, the Commanders forced five turnovers. Houston ran the ball 29 times for 112 yards and QB Jalen Hurts threw two TDs. DB Derron Smith put the Commanders on the board first with a 66-yard pick-six off Hurts at the 12:25 mark of the first quarter. The interception ended Houston's initial drive of the game that had covered 28 yards in seven plays.
After the Commanders defense forced the Stampede 3-and-out, the San Antonio offense took over on its own 12-yard line and proceeded to put together a 10-play, 88-yard drive that culminated in a 54-yard Woodside to WR Mekale McKay touchdown pass. Woodside ran in the ensuing two-point try to give the visitors a 14-0 lead with less than 10 minutes elapsed off the clock. Reigning Offensive Player of the Week Kenneth Farrow extended the Commanders' lead to 20-0 with a 1-yard TD plunge 2:25 into the second quarter. The drive, which encompassed nine plays and 38 yards, was set up by a DL Jayrone Elliott recovery of a RB Justin Stockton fumble on a 3-and-1 from the 36. Following Smith's second interception of the first half, Woodside found TE Stehly Reden alone across the middle of the end zone for the Commanders' fourth TD of the opening half. The five-yard TD pass, which gave the Commanders' a 26-0 lead, capped San Antonio's 70-yard drive that included a 57-yard Woodside to WR Alonzo Moore connection that set the Commanders up at the 13-yard line.
Houston made it a 26-8 game with 5:31 showing on the third-quarter clock with a 45-yard Hurts to Rashad Ross TD pass. The drive was ignited by an DB Erick Dargen interception of Woodside at the 2-yard line as San Antonio was driving for its fifth TD of the evening. K Nick Folk added three points for the Stampede with 13:04 to play. The 23-yard field goal, trimmed the Commanders' lead to 26-11. San Antonio immediately answered with a field goal of its own as K Nick Rose made his ninth consecutive attempt of the season. The 21-yard field goal was the product of an eight-play, 72-yard drive. Following Rose's successful field goal attempt, Houston drove 59 yards down the field, where Hurts found TE Thomas Duarte for a 4-yard TD pass to cut the lead to 10. On the ensuing onside conversion attempt, Houston fumbled a completed pass that was then recovered by San Antonio. The Commanders took time off the clock but punted the ball back to the Stampede with 2:57 left in the game. With 1:21 left on the game clock, Stampede RB Tim Cook found the end zone. After a failed two-point try, the score sat at 29-25 in favor of the visitors. The Stampede did not convert the onside conversion attempt and the Commanders kneeled out the rest of the clock to secure the victory.
