XFL Week 1: Haves & Have Nots

March 4, 2014

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma - In the best game of the week the high-flying Oklahoma City offense discovered that Birmingham could be equally potent. QBs Brodie Croyle and Rusty Smith both threw for 4 scores, but Smith outgained Croyle 422-312 and got the most important yards on the final drive that put K Paul Edinger in range to kick the winning field goal with 18 seconds left on the clock. Oklahoma City had 3 receivers go over 100 yards as they struggled to run the ball with RBs Cory Ross and Vernand Morency, but found plenty of space in the Birmingham zones. WR Adarius Bowman led all receivers with 12 catches on 15 targets. WR Malcolm Kelly was also a big part of the Roughnecks’ plans, catching 9 for 118 and a score, while veteran WR Ron Bellamy scored twice and caught 6 for 108.

Birmingham had their stars too, with WR Earl Bennett drawing single coverage opposite WR Troy Williamson all day. Bennett caught 3 balls all day but all 3 were scores. The problem for Birmingham was pass protection as QB Croyle was felled 9 times by the aggressive Roughnecks' pass rush. Oklahoma City LB Rufus Alexander blitzed early and often and now leads the league with 3 sacks. Add in two each from DL Tommie Harris and Kelly Talavou and you have a rough day for Croyle. And yet, after WR Bennett’s 3rd touchdown of the day with only 55 seconds left on the clock, the game was tied. But, QB Smith had found receivers all day, and in his last minute drive, he found them again, first TE Trent Smith, then Bellamy, then Smith again, and within 4 plays the Roughnecks set up Edinger for a 42 yard kick on a 4th down play. Edinger’s kick sailed true and the Roughnecks got a big opening day win in front of a solid 44,202 crowd.

-- (0-0)Steel 31 - 34 Roughnecks(0-0)
(BIRM): QB Croyle - 25/33 312 yards, 4 TDs, RB Williams - 11 carries, 43 yards, WR Bennett - 10 catches, 157 yards, 3 TDs, WR Williamson - 2 catches, 44 yards

XFL Week 2: OT Thriller in Seattle

March 11, 2014

Seattle, WA - We had our first overtime game of the season this week as the Seattle Dragons came back on the Commanders, scoring the game tying field goal with only 20 seconds left and then getting a quick strike touchdown in overtime to take the home win. San Antonio at one point had a 10 point lead, but just could not hold the Dragons as Bollinger fell only a yard short of a 400-yard day. San Antonio started well with QB Vince Young hitting WR Rashaun Woods for a game-opening touchdown, but when Young was hurt later in the first half, the San Antonio offense started to sputter. Down 17-3, Seattle slowly fought back as Bollinger found WR Reggie Williams for a touchdown and then hit Williams for another in the 4th quarter to pull the game within three. A final drive by Seattle ended with a 26 yard field goal and the game went to overtime.

San Antonio had the first crack at the win in overtime, but on a 3rd and 4, RB Laurence Maroney was tripped up in the backfield and the Commanders had to punt the ball away to Seattle. The Dragons took over on the 19, and on the first play from scrimmage, the called a play which had WRs Taye Biddle and Williams both on the left side, and both ran inside moves to pull the defense inside, leaving TE Dominique Byrd wide open to the outside. Byrd shook off the safety and got a great block from RB Musa Smith to break the sideline run down the field and all the way for an 81-yard game winner. The second loss of the year brought out concerns that the stingy San Antonio defense was not the same animal this year, while fans in Seattle are hoping that they found a system that maximizes the unique talents of their roster.
