XFL Week 17: Renegade Defense Forces Four Turnovers, Seals Win over Battlehawks
July 20, 2024
Memphis, TN - The Dallas Renegades played spoiler as they took down the playoff-bound London Crusaders by a score of 36-22 at Choctaw Stadium. The game had an attendance of 18,545. The two teams combined for three punts to begin the game, before Dallas forced a fumble on the Crusaders' second possession. DB Myles Dorn forced the fumble of Crusaders WR Blake Jackson with LB Will Clarke falling on the loose ball for the Renegades. On the first play of the ensuing possession, QB Luis Perez connected with TE Sal Canella for a 46-yard touchdown to break the ice. The two-point conversion pass to WR Isaiah Winstead made it 8-0, which would be the score after one quarter of play. The Crusaders tacked on their first points early in the second quarter, thanks to a 20-yard field goal by K Andre Szmyt, cutting the Renegades' lead to five points. Dallas K Jonathan Garibay would answer with a 38-yard field goal of his own on the next possession to make it 11-3. The offensive fireworks would ignite after that, as a combined 26 points would be scored in the second quarter. Crusaders RB Jacob Saylers' 39-yard run would set up his 11-yard touchdown reception thrown by QB Manny Wilkins on the next drive, but the failed two-point attempt kept the Renegades in front, 11-9. WR Isaiah Winstead then caught a tough 27-yard touchdown from Perez, helping Dallas extend the lead to 19-9 after Winstead ran in the two-point conversion. Winstead finished with four catches for 64 yards and a score. London would orchestrate an eight-play, 57-yard drive before going to the locker room to claw back, however. Wilkins would score on a one-yard QB keeper as the half expired, but the two-point attempt would fail and the halftime score would be 19-15, in favor of the Renegades.
The Crusaders would take their first lead of the game to open the second half. A busted play at the end of a 65-yard drive would turn into a five-yard scramble for a touchdown to make it 21-19, in favor of London. TE Seth Green would help Dallas get the lead right back, converting on a fourth-and-one, then again on a five-yard touchdown catch. Green's two-point conversion catch would make it 27-21, giving Dallas the advantage after three quarters. Dallas' 11-play drive would end on a Garibay field goal from 26 yards out to create a nine point advantage. An interception by Dallas DB Steven Jones would be the second empty possession of the quarter for London. The Crusaders would get another possession with 1:40 in the game, but the first play would be an interception returned 49 yards for a touchdown by DB Joe Powell. On the one-point attempt, London DB Keylon Kennedy would return an interception to make it 36-22. A third interception of Wilkins in the quarter, this time by Dorn, would seal the win for the Renegades.

XFL Week 17: Thunder Hand Oklahoma City First Loss in 18-9 Affair
July 20, 2024
Berlin, GERMANY - Berlin did something no other UFL team managed to do this season, hold undefeated Oklahoma City under 10 points. The Thunder used a pressuring defense and QB Chase Garbers made his return as Berlin snapped the Oklahoma City Stampede's 15-game win streak, 18-9, in front of 21,839 fans. Garbers, who was placed on injury reserve after suffering a left-wrist injury against London in Week 3, completed 70 percent of his passes going 16-of-23 for 139 yards. Berlin's two-headed tandem at running back Anthony McFarland Jr. and Morgan Ellison sparked the offense. McFarland recorded his second consecutive game with 100+ all-purpose yards, and Ellison scored two touchdowns. The Stampede had an opportunity to tie the game under two minutes and down nine, but Thunder DB Teez Tabor picked off QB Adrian Martinez at the 1-yard line to seal the game.
The Thunder went into their bag of tricks in the first quarter for the game's first touchdown with a WR Jontre Kirklin 36-yard pass to WR Justin Smith. The one-point conversion was unsuccessful, but Berlin broke the seal and led 6-0. Thunder LB Zach Morton, making his season debut, was active early with a sack on Martinez. Morton collapsed on Martinez with Garrett Nelson. The Thunder defense did not allow any points in the first quarter. Oklahoma City got its first points of the game with a K Ramiz Ahmed 34-yard field goal early in the second quarter to cut the lead in half, 6-3. Garbers settled in after a couple drives with a 34-yard pass to Kirklin to get into the redzone. Ellison capped the drive with a one-yard touchdown rush to make it a 12-3 game. Garbers found his rhythm close to halftime, leading the Thunder down the field with 62 passing yards. K Ryan Santoso came in for the 53-yard attempt, but the kick was denied by the left post. Berlin kept their nine-point advantage heading into the break. Three points is the least amount of points Oklahoma City had scored in a first half in franchise history.
The Stampede started the third quarter hot with a 48-yard catch-and-run from Martinez to TE Jace Sternberger all the way to Berlin's six-yard line. Despite a nine-yard tackle for loss by DB AJ Hendy on the very next play, Oklahoma City found the end zone right after with a 15-yard touchdown to Sternberger. The two-point attempt was no good, and the score took 12-9 in favor of Berlin. Berlin LB Delontae Scott tallied the team's second sack of the game and his fourth of the season towards the end of the third quarter. Scott helped the defense force a three-and-out on Oklahoma City to maintain separation on the scoreboard heading into the final frame. McFarland opened the fourth quarter with a 17-yard run to get into Oklahoma City territory. Two plays later, McFarland burst for another big gain of 15 yards. The Thunder running back picked up where he left off last week making big plays on offense. Ellison picked up his second touchdown of the game with a nine-yard rushing score. The one-point attempt was no good, making it a 18-9 game.

XFL Week 17: Defenders Cruise Past Showboats in Road Finale, 36-21
July 21, 2024
Salt Lake City, UT - The Washington Defenders defeated the Salt Lake City Showboats handedly, 36-21. Following a Salt Lake punt on the opening possession of the game, QB Jordan Ta'amu would lead the Washington offense on a seven-play, 77-yard scoring drive in just three minutes. On fourth down, Ta'amu connected with WR Chris Rowland for a score from 35 yards out, giving the Defenders an early 6-0 lead. A quick three-and-out by the Showboats gave Washington the ball back, with them driving as the first quarter came to an end. WR Keke Coutee found the end zone on a 6-yard rush to start the second quarter, capping off the Defenders' 14-play, 89-yard scoring drive. Ta'amu hit TE Kaden Smith on the ensuing two-point conversion, extending the Washington lead to 14-0. After another Salt Lake punt, Ta'amu would give the Showboats the ball right back with an interception thrown in the back of the end zone, picked off by DB DJ Daniel. Back-to-back punts by the two teams led to Salt Lake's first points of the game, as RB Darius Victor pounded in a 6-yard touchdown. A successful one-point conversion pass from QB Josh Love to WR Jonathan Adams made it 14-7. Washington responded accordingly with a two-minute drill executed to perfection, as the Defenders marched down the field, eventually finding TE Alex Ellis for a 15-yard score. Ta'amu ran it in for the two-point conversion, giving them a 22-7 lead heading into the break.
The Defenders stayed hot in the second half, as their offense went on a nine-play, 62-yard scoring drive to start the third quarter. Ta'amu ran in a QB keeper for a one-yard touchdown, followed by a two-point conversion pass to Smith, pushing the Washington advantage to 30-7. After yet another Salt Lake punt, Ta'amu would throw his second interception of the day, as DB Delrick Abrams picked it off in his own end zone. The Showboats would make good on the turnover at the start of the fourth quarter, as Love linked up with WR Vinny Papale for a 14-yard touchdown, shortening the gap to 30-13. DC countered once again, as QB Jalan McClendon ran in a four-yard touchdown, increasing the lead to 36-13. The Defenders came up with their first takeaway of the game on the next drive, as DB Dareon Conley picked off Love. DC couldn't capitalize on the interception, going three-and-out before Salt Lake would score on a 1-yard QB sneak by Love. A successful two-point conversion pass from Love to Adams made things interesting at 36-21. On the ensuing alternate kickoff attempt by the Showboats, DC secured their second interception of the day on Love, this time thanks to DB Montae Nicholson, icing the game.

XFL Week 17: Perkins Leads Panthers to 26-22 Comeback Win Over Roughnecks
July 21, 2024
Houston, TX - Panthers QB Bryce Perkins came into the game in the second half and was a man on a mission, recording 121 passing yards, 79 rushing yards and three total touchdowns (one passing, two rushing) in Detroit's 26-22 comeback victory over the Houston Roughnecks at Rice Stadium. The Panthers overcame 16 unanswered points from Houston and a double-digit deficit in the fourth quarter. Perkins scored the game-winning touchdown with a five-yard rushing score with 3:36 remaining in the game. Two Panthers contributed their first touchdowns of the season in the comeback victory: RB Nate McCrary, stepping up in the absence of Wes Hills, and WR Trey Quinn. DL Breeland Speaks also recorded three sacks and four TFLs to continue his dominant campaign, moving into first in the league in both categories (17 sacks and 25 TFLs). Speaks now has two three-sack games this season. Detroit will ride into Oklahoma City next week against a Stampede team coming off their first loss of the season. The Panthers and Stampede will square off in the final slate of the regular season.
QB Danny Etling made the start for Detroit. Etling looked like his old self, completing 12-of-18 passes for 110 yards in the first half. Both teams traded punts on their first possessions. It was the first time in the last five weeks that the Panthers did not open the game with a touchdown. Etling settled in soon after, firing a 20-yard pass to WR Devin Ross. Three plays later, Etling connected with WR Siaosi Mariner for a 19-yard gain. Detroit came up empty-handed on the drive, as K Jake Bates pushed a 39-yard attempt wide right. The Panthers got the ball right back with a fumble recovery by DL Kenny Willekes. DL Jesus Gibbs forced the fumble on RB Mark Thompson and Willekes returned it to Houston's 16-yard line. Detroit found the endzone this time around for the game's first points with a McCrary three-yard rushing score. The one-point attempt was unsuccessful, and the Panthers led 6-0 after the first quarter. Houston responded with points of their own, a K JJ Molson 39-yard field goal to cut Detroit's lead in half. The Roughnecks got a takeaway of their own with a LB D'Juan Hines interception off Etling with 4:21 remaining before halftime. However, DL Breeland Speaks thwarted Houston's opportunity to capitalize with a sack to force a punt. Detroit was unable to hold Houston out of the endzone, as the Roughnecks only needed two offensive plays to hit paydirt to open the third quarter. QB Nolan Henderson connected with WR Justin Hall for a catch-and-run 63-yard touchdown. The two-point attempt was no good, but Houston got their first lead up 9-6. Perkins took over for Etling in the second half but would throw an interception four plays into his first drive. The Roughnecks took advantage of the takeaway with another Hall touchdown, this time a reception of seven-yards. Hall also converted the one-point attempt to give Houston a double digit lead. Perkins kept the drive alive on their ensuing possession with a 33-yard run on third-and-long. Three plays later, Perkins threw a four-yard touchdown to WR Trey Quinn which made it a 16-12 game. Houston kept driving and made plays when they needed to. Henderson completed a 33-yard pass to WR Emmanuel Butler on third-and-long. The Roughnecks found the endzone once again with a two-yard rushing score by Thompson to reclaim their 10-point lead. Perkins scored his first rushing touchdown of the season early in the fourth quarter to cut into Houston's lead. Detroit's one-point attempt was successful with a pass to TE Cole Hikutini, putting them within a field goal. With the Panthers defense needing to make a stop, DL Ron'Dell Carter and Mika Tafua stepped up, collapsing on Henderson for a sack. Houston was later forced to punt, giving Detroit a chance to take the lead. Facing 3rd-and-14, Perkins went to his legs again, scrambling for 25 yards to keep the drive alive with less than five minutes remaining in the game. Perkins gave Detroit the lead with his second rushing touchdown of the game, Detroit's first lead since the first quarter. Perkins found Hikutini again for the one-point conversion to lead by four. The Roughnecks had one last chance to win the game, but the Panthers were able to get the stop and complete the comeback.
