I wanted to try a basketball General Manager style game and this looks ideal.

Although it doesn't have the NBA licenced names I read that mods are readily available through this community.

I have no experience of modding games or where to start though.

What do I need to do, step-by-step to modify the game to include real NBA names/logos/appearances etc?

For logos, you can go to the ..\DDSPB20\app\disk\graphics\logos folder on your computer and download and replace the logos. Make sure you get .png logos
