Calling a play at any time

Am I correct that I can't just call a play for a player anytime that I want to during live play? That's unfortunate if that is the case as that is a big part of coaching in the NBA.

Yes you are correct - that may be something that gets added in the future although it is something that would take some significant testing and design to do so because I would not want it to be something automatic where you can just decide that a certain player is going to get a certain type shot whenever you want and it would also have to be tied into the player type system to make players be able to refuse something that is not in their style of play and possibly get annoyed at you for doing it as well as getting jealous/upset that you call plays for one player more than others. Its a good idea but it will just take alot to do it correctly in a future version
