Can you clarify what the "Skill" rating means?

Can you clarify what the "Skill" rating means?

Postby tbrtb » Wed Aug 24, 2022 6:50 am

For some positions, there are already ratings for (what I would consider) position-specific skills. For a QB, there are Throwing power and accuracy ratings. So what does skill cover for QB? Similarly, for OL, run blocking and pass blocking ratings already exist. So what does the skill rating mean for OL? There isn't anything specific for a position like CB, so is Skill an indication of their man and zone coverage abilities?

On the extremes, if a QB had 99 throwing power and accuracy, but 50 skill, what does that mean? And vice versa

Thanks!

Skill is comfort level at a particular position. If you take identical QB's, with 99 arm, 99 accuracy, etc. but one with 25 skill and one with 100 skill, the 100 skill player will play more to their attributes where the 25 skill one won't. Skill isn't as heavily weighted as physical attributes in most scenarios, so I wouldn't put a 100 skill 50 speed RB in over a 99 speed RB. Skill is more like the "learning curve" of a position, and helps us differentiate players who may be out of position or moving to a new position.

thank you! so, in a sense, it may be considered similar to "Awareness" in EA sports games, which tends to increase as players gain more experience? or, in this case, can also grow with training focusing on building skill?

Yea, that sounds similar. We needed a way to track ability to excel at a position... even if a DE and a LB have very similar physical traits doesn't mean they know the ins and outs of the position, so that's where skill comes in.
