Stat Bug with Penalties and Sacks

Stat Bug with Penalties and Sacks

Hi Brooks and AKH,

Saw the following issue and wanted to bring to your attention:

8:25 1st and 10 Bir - 31 Beck, J. is SACKED by Bert Askson - DE for -6 yds.; Memphis Penalty on Athas, P.: Unsportsmanlike Conduct.; Automatic First Down!
8:13 1st and 10 Bir - 40 Pass by Beck, J., complete to Charles, J. for 10 yds. Tackle by Belcher, J.; First Down!

A couple of issues:
1. Askon got credited with the sack in his stats on the play when he shouldn't have. The penalty should have negated the sack
2. The ball should be on the Bir 46 instead of the Bir 40. The engine credited the sack yardage then the penalty yardage. That should not have happened.

I am seeing a few instances where penalties that negate offensive plays are not being computed right from a yardage perspective; if a penalty is not an add on (like defensive personal fouls, facemasks, etc.), the offensive play should not count and any yardage gained should be negated.

You may want to look at this because this will skew stats. Thanks!

Here is another instance:

5:01 3rd and 2 Mem - 15 Rush by Campbell, J. for -2 yds. Tackle by Umenyiora, O.; Memphis Penalty on Holmes, S.: Unsportsmanlike Conduct.
4:58 4th and 10 Mem - 7 Punt by Hodges, R. of 41 yards.; Returned by Williams, R. for 2 yards. First Down!

1. It looks like the defense declined the penalty (Good), but the engine still credited the penalty yardage half the distance to the goaline (bad)
2. The ball should have stayed on the Mem 15 since the defense declined the penalty

Just wanted to bring these to your attention because I am seeing these a lot. Thanks!

Unsportsmanlike penalties are currently set as tackon, dead ball, or not a part of the play, so they are evaluated in addition to the play results.

Brooks,

Defensive Unsportsmanlike Conduct (Example One above) is a tackon foul only during a positive play result, not with a negative play; if the play is a negative play result, the foul is taken from the line of scrimmage, not from where the sack happened.

Offensive Unsportsmanlike Conduct (Example 2) would not have been reflected because the defense declined the penalty; the penalty didn't happen, therefore, no yardage would have been deducted:

Refusal of Penalties. Unless expressly prohibited, the penalty for any foul may be declined by the offended team, and play proceeds as though no foul had been committed. The yardage distance for any penalty may be declined, even though the penalty is accepted. (NFL Playbook)

The game doesn't use specific NFL rules for all penalties. The engine just treats it like a personal foul/dead ball penalty. In the cases above the penalties were not declined... they were accepted and tacked on to the result of the play. In theory you could mod the penalties.xml file and change some of the behavior if you want... either removing that particular one, or changing whether it tacks on, etc.
