When we release a player is the Drop Penalty kick in for the current year's salary or for the total Remaining contract?

Example:
Player A is making $5 million a year for 4 years and we cut him with a 10% Drop Penalty.
Is our drop penalty - A) $500k (10% of $5 mil annual salary), B) $2 million (10% of the $20 mil total contract) or C) something else

And are retirement penalties handled the exact same way as Drop Penalties?

Both retirement and cut penalties are calculated per year. So 4 years, 5mil at 10% penalty would be 500k in the lost salary bucket for each year.
