For the last full season for my team, they had 576 free throws attempted in 32 games...an average of 18.0 per game. The season before that they had 533 free throws attempted in 33 games...an average of 16.15 FTA's per game. In the next season before that they had 592 FTA's in 31 games...an average of19.10. I play out almost all my games using 2D and only rarely sim a game. In most games, each team will typically get called for 12-20 fouls during the game. Occasionally one team might have more or less than that range in a game, but that's rare. I work the ref, but seldom yell at the refs and am judicious in how i work the refs, so seldom get called for a technical.
I seldom have players foul out of games. I do tend to protect my players...if they pick up their 2nd foul in the first half I often sit them the rest of that half or at least most of it to avoid them having 3 fouls in the first half...if they pick up their 3rd foul early in the 2nd half, again they most often sit past the midpoint of the 2nd half. And while that happens to a few players in most games, it doesn't happen to the extent that my team is hobbled by players being benched for long periods of time or too many players saddled with a lot of fouls. I typically play with Defensive Intensity in the range of 5-7 on a scale of 10...but if it's a close game and I'm behind in the last 2-5 minutes of a game, I sometimes crank it up to 10 hoping my D will stifle the other team and give me a chance to overtake them. I double team a player on the opponent's team all or nearly all of the game. I play M-2-M 60-80% of the game and one of the zone D's the other portions of the game. When I begin coaching a bad team, there is a slightly higher number of fouls by my team the first season while players are gaining experience with the defensive sets I'm using, but that increase isn't a lot more than in succeeding seasons when my players are more experienced.
I do agree with you, though, that it SEEMS to me that there are more fouls in the first 5-10 minutes of the 1st half than during any other 5-10 minute portion of games...but that's an IMPRESSION based on me hating to have players pick up 2 early fouls rather than proven fact and it doesn't happen every game...so I MAY be overly sensitive about early fouls and my mind overly impacted when it happens.
