when I played CFB a few years ago, I thought upsets were overdone. In my first few years, teams like UGA and Bama would often post 8-4 or 7-5 records, which is very unrealistic. Do you think the current game has this realism better tuned?

There is nothing in the engine related to "upsets". It doesn't know who the teams are, or what their real-life counterparts are doing. Prestige drives a lot of the recruiting, so higher prestige schools in high talent recruiting areas should do very well in signing top players, and therefore have huge advantages in games against teams with lesser players. But nothing about their prestige or "who they are" gives any specific advantage on the field.

I used to be frustrated about unrealistic upsets too. But I noticed that the higher prestige teams almost always get the better recruits and finish on top of the recruiting rankings. So after about 3 or 4 seasons into playing a save, teams will start to have more realistic ‘on the field’ results based on how high their team prestige is.
