How come the jersey and helmets I change won't stay?

I made a change to helmets and jerseys in a historical sim and they won't stick. It goes back to the ones the game made over and over again. I deleted the original ones. I used helmets from the 70's file and used jersey files from the file that was in the game itself that best matched the team. How can I make the changes stay?
