2014 NBA Draft
1 – Cleveland – PF Reggie Young
Not the best passer but when you average 34 points and 22 rebounds in a season then people can look past that.
2 – Milwaukee – C Dexter Floyd
Called it. Floyd will never be a good scorer, or even an average one but he will be one of the best defenders and rebounders in the league soon.
3 – Detroit – SG Jeff Brown
Short but has great potential. You could see a light switch turn on during last season and hopefully he continues with his growth watch out.
San Antonio offers us SF Hassan Trivuncic for SF George-Marie Gauthier which is a no brainer. Sure Trivuncic is rawer than Gauthier but will be a better rebounder, scorer and defender and will be a great back up to Kevin King. I accept their offer.
4 – Los Angeles Clippers – PF Scott Channing
He is a great player and could have been picked #1 in other drafts but this one seems loaded. Great replacement for Blake Griffin.
5 – Detroit – PF Kelvin Rivers
They needed a bigman after drafting Jeff Brown earlier and looks to have reached. Eric Archibald seemed a better pick.
6 – Memphis – PF Joey Kouser
Or Kouser. Skinny for a PF, but is a very physical player. Put 20 extra pounds on him and he could explode. Good pick for #6.
7 – Charlotte – C Eric Archibald
Not the best defender but if someone was to say that he was available at #7 people would either say that the other teams picked badly or it’s a stacked draft. Looks to be the latter.
8 – Houston – C Greg Smith
Was hoping Archibald was going to drop and reached a little. Not bad but definitely not great.
9 – Boston – SF Jim Seymour
Wonderful pick who although is only 195lbs (6’9) is an outstanding rebounder. He will get plenty of minutes for the rebuilding Celtics.
I’m surprised the 7’2 monster Shea Hines hasn’t been taken yet.
10 – Denver – SG Boosty Nelson
Huge 2 guard at 6’8 will cause havoc for defenders. Is a little inconsistent but is a decent pick.
11 – San Antonio – SG Tony Chase
Fantastic scorer and solid player, if he adds a 3 point component to his arsenal then look out.
12 – Memphis – PF Darrell Holtz
Not sure about this pick. Sure Holtz will be a good player but they now have drafted two PFs in the space of 6 picks.
13 – Milwaukee – C Vandyke Bushnell
Super, super raw player out of the Netherlands is a very bad pick. Not only is Shea Hines still on the board if they were looking for a Centre, they drafted stud Dexter Floyd with the second pick which is just doubling up.
14 – Washington – C Shea Hines
I guess they were going for BPA as they have Michael Nicholson and Rashid Shiran at the PF and C positions so Hines will be a very good back up to them.
15 – Los Angeles Lakers – PG Mills Watkins
Very clever guard that can shoot from range and is a great passer. Great pick up by the Lakers. This draft is DEEEEEEEEEP.
16 – Sacramento – SG Lloyd Grundman
Strong guard that is a human Adonis but his defence is lacking. Good pick but don’t expect too much from him too soon.
17 – Chicago – SF Emmett Cooper
Very small SF would will have trouble getting his shot off. Average at most things but might struggle because of his height.
18 – Oklahoma City – PF Gelnn Harris
His parents were going to call him Glenn but there was a typo on his birth certificate. Good choice at #18 could do much worse.
19 – Golden State – C Brandon Martin
Is very slow and short which is never a good combination. Reminds me of Zach Randolph – sure he can’t jump high but he knows how to rebound the ball by using his body. No where near as good as Randolph of course.
Kenny Costa who was slotted at #6 in the mock draft is still on the board.
20 – New Jersey – SF Bobby Ellis
Very good defender who is a pest on that end. Long arms and a decent shooter. Could have been picked 5-10 slots lower though.
21 – Indiana – SG Dennis Stone
Young and raw but could develop into a decent wing player. Give him time and he should reward you.
22 – Los Angeles Lakers – SF Tengiz Davidov
Estonian Dirk. He can shoot from range but also put it on the floor. He slipped a few spots so good pick by the Lakers.
23 – Dallas – PF Carlos Gearhart
Solid player who will never be more than a bench player, but I guess at pick 23 that is all you can hope for.
I have been trying to move up in the draft to get Kenny Costa but no one is biting until Miami comes around. I give them our next year’s first round pick as well as two second round picks for their #24 pick in this draft.
No use beating around the bush, I know who I want.
24 – Toronto – PG Kenny Costa
The experts love the pick and I am very happy.
25 – Utah – SG Antonio Lytle
Another 6’8 SG who is dead eye at the mid range game. Will be a very good player off the Jazz bench.
26 – New York – SG Pete Conley
Decent passer and will give the Knicks production off the bench. Solid pick. Apparently the experts disagree and are tearing shreds off Donnie Walsh.
27 – Portland – C Kenneth Thornton
The Trailblazers were going for BPA and got the 6’9, 295lb behemoth Thornton who could eat Shaquille O’Neal if he wanted to. Good pick.
28 – Philadelphia – SG Ryan Howell
Yuck. Not a fan of this pick.
29 – New Jersey – C Noel Wooley
Will need some Wool(ey) up in New Jersey. Yep, he is that unremarkable I don’t really have much to say about his play.
30 – Cleveland – PF Ed Lilly
And with our pick they pick up a skinny, short and slow PF who will be out of the league when his rookie contract is up. We won the deal hands down.
There were no trades in the first round (apart from ours) but four in the second, including a big one.
Portland trades:
C Kenneth Thornton
Cleveland trades:
C Jacob Trilli
Why for Portland:
They didn’t want to pay a first round salary so they shipped off the superior Thornton for the unguaranteed Trilli.
Why for Cleveland:
They were hoping Thornton dropped to the second round, but when he didn’t they just traded for him. He looks better than advertised as well.
Winner – Cleveland
Thornton is better than Trilli and it’s not much different money wise.
Minnesota trades:
C Chucky Durden
New York trades:
SG Corey Hines
Why for Minnesota:
Marcus Mickens has been playing well at C so shipping off the under used Durden was inevitable. Too bad they got a $1 player with a 10c brain in Hines. If he had his head screwed on properly he could be a star but he is too busy picking fights.
Why for New York:
It’s addition by subtraction. Hines had worn out his welcome and they needed an extra big man to help spell Stoudemire.
Winner – New York
Sure Hines is a better player but the way he has been booted out of two teams in two years is a worry for the Timberwolves.
New Orleans trades:
SF Trevor Ariza
Detroit trades:
PG Terrico White
Why for New Orleans:
Trevor Ariza is good and all, but he is still owed $17 million over 3 years and the Hornets have only one player (David West) with a contract going past next year. Pure salary dump.
Why for Detroit:
They now have mean backcourt of Ariza at point guard, Brian Perkins at SG and Joe Taylor at SF who will beat up the opposition’s guards every night. They desperately need a PG now as Jeff Brown is still too raw to look after that spot (even though he is a SG).
Winner – Both
New Orleans cuts salary and Detroit gets another decent player. Win/win.
Los Angeles Clippers trades:
SF Quinn Trent
SF Chris Douglas-Roberts
Milwaukee trades:
C Andrew Bogut
Why for the Clippers:
Bogut is a fantastic player who averaged 17 points, 12 rebounds and 3.5 blocks a game last year and you trade two average players for him? Count me in.
Why for Milwaukee:
Salary dump. Bogut was owed $41 million over 4 years but they could have got so much more than two expiring.
Winner – Los Angeles Clippers
Wow. Steal of the century here. Pairing Bogut with Justin Cabrera and Scott Channing is a magnificent front court that would rival any other team.
I can’t believe the steal from the Clips. Too bad Cabrera will wear out his welcome and be traded for a first round pick or something.
It looks like Kenny Costa will be put in the D-League for a year but I might keep Trivuncic in the team to see what he can do.
