New York, New York! Bringing a championship home

Postby zike_42 » Sun Jan 20, 2013 6:19 pm

December Player of the Month – Kevin Durant, Oklahoma City Thunder – 35.0 points, 7.9 rebounds, 0.8 assists, 1.2 steals and 1.6 blocks per game.

December Rookie of the Month – Pat Archie, Dallas Mavericks – 11.2 points, 5.1 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 0.5 steals and 0.8 blocks per game.

Hey! It’s a win to start the month, as we down Indiana 105-90 behind Jarrett Jack’s 19 points, 7 assists and 6 rebound night. Hassan Benton had 18 points in his first start at SF while keeping Danny Granger to a 4/12 evening. He still put up 20 points but went to the line 13 times.

Memphis Grizzlies 7-24

Grr, the Spurs always seem to beat us after a win, this time we went down 99-85. Dwight Howard had 19 points, 9 rebounds and 5 steals and forced Marcin Gortat to eight turnovers. It was a much closer game than 14 points as they ran away with it at the end.

Memphis Grizzlies 7-25

**TRADE**

Charlotte trade:
SG Rodney Stuckey

LA Clippers trade:
2016 2nd round pick

Winner – Clippers. The Clips get another steal and even though Stuckey won’t have a lot of impact on games he is a great bench asset.

That’s another win which feels great. We take down the Sixers 113-106 in overtime as Jarrett Jack was everywhere, notching up a triple double with 18 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds. Hassan Benton likes it at SF with 22 points and keeping the young star Andrew Owens to 3/19 shooting. Jrue Holiday was their best with 23 points and 12 assists but no-one could tame Jarrett Jack tonight.

Memphis Grizzlies 8-25

That’s two wins a row baby as we take down Charlotte at their home 118-96. It was David Lee’s turn to star with 34 points while Jarrett Jack was close to another triple double with 8 points, 10 assists and 7 rebounds. Ty Lawson had 22 points in the losing effort and even though everyone is raving about Michael Kidd-Gilchrist I’m just not seeing a superstar in the making. Maybe I’m being too harsh on a 22 year old in his third season.

Memphis Grizzlies 9-25

Can you say three wins in a row? Not us as we go down in a heartbreaker 112-108 to Sacramento in overtime. Thomas Robinson was amazing with 27 points and 13 rebounds as DeMarcus Cousins is coming back into his game slowly. In Marcin Gortat’s foul trouble absence Tyson Chandler took over with 25 points, 10 rebounds and 4 steals off the bench for us.

Memphis Grizzlies 9-26

What a bounce back! I’m actually getting excited by this team as we mow down the very good Washington team 103-88. Marcin Gortat wasn’t in foul trouble and he exploded for 18 points and 13 rebounds (he still had five fouls) and David Lee helped out with 17 points and 7 rebounds. Very nice young guy Chris Drexler had 18 points and 11 rebounds and has broken out of the league. The second year player is a fantastic talent but doesn’t have the best personality which may cause problems down the road.

Memphis Grizzlies 10-26

We win again, this time over the equally inept Suns 113-95. Hassan Benton has been fantastic since he has started starting, this time putting up 28 points while Marcin Gortat and David Lee combined for 35 points and 26 rebounds which is awesome. Unfortunately Tony Allen started complaining to David Lee and I’m just not interested.

Memphis trade:
SG Tony Allen
2017 1st round pick

Boston trade:
SG Alec Burks
2016 1st round pick

Winner – Memphis. Allen has been insulting his teammates and the Grizz didn’t want him after this season with the emergence of Hassan Benton. Hopefully for the Celtics Memphis strike out in the off season so that pick can be a good one.

The Celtics are currently 14-25 which is pretty bad and hopefully they will still be bad at the end of the season. That gives us three first round picks this draft but with the way the Warriors are playing I don’t think it will be in the lottery (Golden State are only a game out of eight place).

In our 115-93 loss to Philadelphia Mike Conley strained his hamstring and will be out for nearly two weeks which sucks so I bring in Ernest Davis from the D-League to cover. Marcin Gortat had 21 points and 11 rebounds while Thad Young was the best for the winners with 26 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists.

Memphis Grizzlies 11-27

The Bucks look really good led by their defensive backcourt of Rajon Rondo and Iman Shumpert and they take us down 117-93. Ersan Ilyasova was pretty good with 20 points and 9 rebounds while Thomas Cooper is finally starting at PF and put up 18 points and 7 rebounds. Hassan Benton, Jarrett Jack and Wesley Fields combined for 5/23 from the field which doomed us.

Memphis Grizzlies 11-28

Wesley Fields is shooting a woeful 35.8% from the field and I know that he is a rookie getting to know his place in the league but that just isn’t good enough. I’m not going to trade him this season but if the right deal comes along I might pull the trigger in the off season.

So close but so far in our 115-108 loss to Atlanta as we squandered some good defence, keeping the Hawks to only 41% shooting. Marcin Gortat had 24 points and 9 rebounds while Wilson Chandler (remember that guy?) had 14 points in 18 minutes off the bench. Antoine Martin torched Wesley Fields with 21 points and 6 rebounds.

Memphis Grizzlies 11-29

My goodness we can turn it on when we want. The 29-12 Pistons come to town and we stomp them. Our biggest lead was 31 points as we went on to humiliate them 105-88. Marcin Gortat and David Lee combined for 48 points and 21 rebounds while Ernest Davis had his first start and dished out seven assists. Carmelo Anthony shot poorly for 28 points as we keep Detroit to 40% from the field.

Memphis Grizzlies 12-29

**TRADE**

Brooklyn trade:
SG Nathan Younger

Atlanta trade:
2016 1st round pick

Winner – Brooklyn, by a mile. Atlanta are 17-25 while Younger is D-League talent. You do the math.

Another win for you Memphis Grizzlies as we stomp Boston 109-90 behind Marcin Gortat (25 points), David Lee (25 points, 9 rebounds), Wesley Fields (23 points) and Jarrett Jack (18 points, 10 assists). Pretty good play by our four players. Ex-Grizz Tony Allen is starting for the Celtics and put up 19 points but turned the ball over eight times.

Memphis Grizzlies 13-29

Phoenix gets their revenge with a 116-91 shellacking. Dion Waiters has been playing like everyone knew he could (maybe even an All Star?) and had 24 points and 7 assists tonight to lead seven Suns players in double figures. David Lee was our best with 21 points and 8 rebounds with Marcin Gortat chipping in with 17 points and 13 rebounds.

Memphis Grizzlies 13-30

Utah have been as bad as us which is strange because they have a good young core. We beat them 111-96 despite Derrick Favors’ 29 points, 20 rebounds, 5 blocks and 4 steals. David Lee wasn’t as good but still good enough with 22 points and 7 rebounds while Wesley Fields had 20 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Man Favors is a talent and if the PF spot wasn’t so stacked and he wasn’t in Utah he would be getting so much hype.

Memphis Grizzlies 14-30

That’s the end of January and there was a little light to this team, going 8-7 and showing some fight. That means that we aren’t last in the conference that honour goes to the 12-31 Lakers. In fact, we are only five games out of the eighth playoff position! Crazy! New Orleans has taken over the lead with a 38-7 record with Minnesota two games behind and then daylight to third.

In the East the Knicks have taken the outright lead at 35-10 with Detroit and Charlotte not that far behind. Brooklyn are still last on 15-32 but in good news Boston has fallen to 15-31 which helps our draft stocks.

Memphis Top Points
David Lee – 16.2
Marcin Gortat – 14.6
Jarrett Jack – 14.1

Memphis Top Assists
Jarrett Jack – 5.5
Mike Conley – 5.3
Ernest Davis – 4.4

Memphis Top Rebounds
David Lee – 7.8
Marcin Gortat – 7.6
Jarrett Jack – 4.4

League Top Points
Kevin Durant (OKC) – 35.3
Lebron James (MIA) – 30.3
Kevin Love (MIN) – 28.6

League Top Assists
John Wall (WAS) – 9.8
Kyrie Irving (CLE) – 9.7
Ricky Rubio (MIN) – 9.7

League Top Rebounds
Kevin Love (MIN) – 13.2
Kenneth Faried (DEN) – 11.9
Dwight Howard (SAS) – 11.8

Rookie Top Efficiency
Dave Webb (BKL) – 14.6 (11.4 points, 1.5 assists, 7.8 rebounds, 1.4 steals, 1.7 blocks)
Pat Archie (DAL) – 13.2 (11.3 points, 2.3 assists, 5.2 rebounds, 0.6 steals, 0.8 blocks)
Paul Orvis (TOR) – 10.3 (8.8 points, 1.2 assists, 3.8 rebounds, 1.6 steals, 1.0 block)

Second Round of NBA Draft Prospects

1. (1) C Mark Lewis (NC State), Freshman, 6’11”, 252lbs
2. (2) C Travis Ross (Dayton), Sophomore, 6’11”, 281lbs
3. (4) PF Borut Peschat (Slovenia), 20 years old, 6’10”, 229lbs
4. (5) C Mark Hill (Temple), Senior, 6’9”, 279lbs
5. (3) SG Joe Abney (Iowa), Sophomore, 6’7”, 208lbs

Thoughts – It’s still a two horse race between Lewis and Ross with Lewis leading the way but it looks like the top five is already taking shape. Abney falling to five is an interesting move as a lot of NBA scouts still have him at #3.

January Player of the Month – Lebron James, Miami Heat – 30.6 points, 6.4 rebounds, 4.8 assists, 2.8 steals and 1.0 block per game.

January Rookie of the Month – Dave Webb, Brooklyn Nets – 13.5 points, 8.9 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 1.7 steals and 2.1 blocks per game.

We play one of only two teams with a worse record and we lose, awesome. The Lakers destroy us 110-86 as Ernest Jameson is looking fantastic with 27 points and 13 rebounds on 13/16 shooting as all of their starting five were in double figures. Marcin Gortat sprains his wrist in the loss as we only had three people in double figures, led by David Lee’s 21 points.

Memphis Grizzlies 14-31

I decide to lose some more salary and dump our bench guys that have multi-year contracts for some draft picks.

Memphis trade:
PG Gary Neal
C Tyson Chandler
PF Glen Davis

Orlando trade:
2016 2nd round pick (CHI)
2016 2nd round pick (ORL)
2016 2nd round pick (MEM)

Winner – Orlando. We know what the Grizzlies are trying to do but there is too much talent there for just second rounders. The Magic would not be able to get players like these with those picks.

I don’t care; we lose another $5.3 million which is what is the difference between two maximum guys or one max and a lesser player. I sign Aaron Brooks for one year to round out the squad.

Zaza Pachulia of all people get the best of us with Dallas beating us 112-100. Zaza had 22 points and 7 rebounds, combining with Brandon Jennings who had 20 points of his own. David Lee was our best with 19 points and 11 rebounds and I really hope I’m still here next season.

Memphis Grizzlies 14-32

Marc Gasol still hasn’t forgiven us for trading him (and I don’t think he ever will) as he ran riot on us in the Warriors 106-86 win. Marc had 19 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals to showcase his all around game as Golden State shot 11 more free throws than our team. David Lee had 20 points but negated that with six turnovers.

Memphis Grizzlies 14-33

The next night we got absolutely killed 110-78 to Denver. JaVale McGee and Kenneth Faried combined for 41 points and 20 rebounds in only 30 minutes as Tim Duncan was our best off the bench with 11 points and 5 rebounds. I don’t know if I’ll see out the season at this stage.

Memphis Grizzlies 14-34

I don’t know how a team with Deron Williams leading the way is 16-36 but the Nets are just that. Make that 17-36 as they beat us by 24 points 97-73. Wesley Fields lays a goose egg going 0/10 for 0 points as Brook Lopez is the best on the court with 17 points and 8 rebounds. We shoot 35% from the field and I just can’t wait until the All Star break.

Memphis Grizzlies 14-35

That’s six losses in a row to start February as the Celtics hold their lead late to win 110-103. Jared Sullinger had 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead the way and Rajon Rondo’s replacement John Weir did his best Rondo impression with 12 points and 14 assists. Marcin Gortat had 26 points for us but our back up PG Ernest Davis has broken his wrist and will be out for two months. Luckily I signed Aaron Brooks I guess.

Memphis Grizzlies 14-36

Our last game before the break is a 100-78 loss to Toronto. Kevin Seraphin had 16 points, 11 rebounds and 5 blocks in the win and we had nothing, as Wesley Fields again laid a goose egg, again going 0/10 for 0 points. I’m really going to look to shop Fields because he just isn’t getting any better.

Memphis Grizzlies 14-37

Finally we get to the All Star festivities as Dallas’ Jamal Howell wins the Slam Dunk Contest by the barest of margins, 65-64 over Cleveland’s Kent Harris. Very exciting. Jerryd Bayless from Miami wins the preliminaries and the final of the Long Distance Shootout fairly easily over Minnesota’s Wesley Matthew and Charlotte’s Klay Thompson.

The Sophomore team took out the Rookie game very easily but not before a few hiccups in the early stages of the game. They got themselves together and took out the game 114-98 behind MVP Joe Holmes with 21 points and 5 rebounds as six sophomores were in double figures. Dave Webb led the way for the Rookies with 21 points and 12 rebounds as six rookies were in double figures. We didn’t have any participants for good reason as no-one on our team is playing well enough to get a spot.

I try to trade Wesley Fields but there just isn’t anyone I want to trade for that won’t destroy my free agency plan so he is a part of this team for the time being.

Brandon Jennings gets the start again for the Western All Stars and wins the MVP in the West’s 135-127 win. Jennings had 29 points and 7 assists while Kevin Durant put up 25 points for the winners. Lebron James was the best for the East with 24 points and 9 rebounds but the team shot 10% less from the field than the West.

Western Conference All Star Starters –
Brandon Jennings, Dallas Mavericks
James Harden, Houston Rockets
Kevin Durant, Oklahoma City Thunder
Kevin Love, Minnesota Timberwolves
Dwight Howard, San Antonio Spurs

Eastern Conference All Star Starters -
Kyrie Irving, Cleveland Cavaliers
Dwyane Wade, Miami Heat
Lebron James, Miami Heat
Greg Monroe, Detroit Pistons
Al Jefferson, Charlotte Bobcats

Obviously there were no Memphis All Stars this year.

Our first game back is against my old team the New York Knicks and they take no mercy on us, winning 98-82 in a fairly easy manner. Chris Paul had 21 points, 11 rebounds and 7 assists while Anderson Varejao put up 18 points and 9 rebounds. Wesley Fields has pulled his head in after I said I was looking to trade him and had 18 points on only 8 shots.

Memphis Grizzlies 14-38

**TRADES**

Denver trade:
2016 1st round pick

Detroit trade:
SG Danny Green

Winner – Denver. The pick will be very low while Green is a decent bench player with a $5 million expiring contract.

New Orleans trade:
C Jason Smith

LA Lakers trade:
PG Ramon Sessions

Winner – Lakers. They are both important bench players but Smith is a better player and will help out Ernest Jameson in the future.

New Orleans trade:
SF Brandon Rush
2016 2nd round pick

Brooklyn trade:
PG Raymond Felton

Winner – Brooklyn. Talent wise the Hornets won this trade but they now have four quality PGs on the roster and there just isn’t enough minutes for all of them.

Jarrett Jack had 22 points while David Lee doubled up but it just wasn’t good enough for Memphis as we go down 106-92 to Cleveland. Kyrie Irving shows why he is one of the best players in the league with 22 points, 16 assists and 6 rebounds while Brennan Weber had 25 points and 12 rebounds.

Memphis Grizzlies 14-39

Ah ha! It’s pretty bad that I celebrate a win with such enthusiasm like we won the title but it doesn’t matter, we beat Orlando in Florida 96-93. Marcin Gortat had 19 points and 12 rebounds while Hassan Benton put up 13 points in 19 minutes off the bench. Kemba Walker was the best for the Magic with 16 points and 7 assists while Gabe White had 18 points on a whopping 27 shots.

Memphis Grizzlies 15-39

The 45-10 Hornets come to town and leave with a win, just. We take them to overtime as they finish us over eventually 115-108 so I’m not too upset about this loss. Anthony Davis had 24 points, 10 rebounds, 8 blocks and 6 steals in a fantastic display of his talent while Eric Gordon scored 28 points on only 16 shots. Mike Conley had 21 points for us before fouling out while Wesley Fields had 17 points on good shooting so maybe I have got through to him.

Memphis Grizzlies 15-40

The 41-15 Timberwolves come to town the next night and it wasn’t as close. Minnesota’s top lead was 41 points as they level us 119-82. Kevin Love had 37 points and 10 rebounds while Ricky Rubio dished out 18 assists for the victors. I’m glad Wesley Fields has started to turn a corner as he had 21 points on 8/11 shooting instead of going 0/10 on multiple occasions.

Memphis Grizzlies 15-41

After an eight game road trip and two home games against two of the best teams in the league our record was 1-11 for the month and we are last. Not just last in the conference but last in the league. At least Boston is 19-39 for another good draft pick. The two leaders in the two conferences are New Orleans (47-10) and New York (45-12) and are taking the lead with them. I may be still bitter about getting fired but I’m still supporting them for the title. Quietly.

Memphis Top Points
David Lee – 16.1
Marcin Gortat – 14.6
Jarrett Jack – 13.9

Memphis Top Assists
Jarrett Jack – 5.3
Mike Conley – 5.2
Ernest Davis – 4.4

Memphis Top Rebounds
David Lee – 7.6
Marcin Gortat – 7.5
Jarrett Jack – 4.5

League Top Efficiency
Lebron James (MIA) – 30.7 (32.1 points, 5.2 assists, 6.3 rebounds, 2.4 steals, 0.7 blocks)
Kevin Durant (OKC) – 29.5 (35.4 points, 1.1 assists, 7.4 rebounds, 1.2 steals, 1.4 blocks)
Kevin Love (MIN) – 28.2 (29.4 points, 1.4 assists, 13.1 rebounds, 1.2 steals, 0.6 blocks)

Rookie Top Efficiency
Dave Webb (BKL) – 14.7 (11.1 points, 1.5 assists, 7.7 rebounds, 1.4 steals, 1.7 blocks)
Pat Archie (DAL) – 12.6 (11.2 points, 2.2 assists, 5.2 rebounds, 0.5 steals, 0.7 blocks)
Paul Orvis (TOR) – 9.8 (8.6 points, 1.1 assists, 3.6 rebounds, 1.5 steals, 1.0 block)

Third Round of NBA Draft Prospects (previous rank in brackets)

1. (1) C Mark Lewis (NC State), Freshman, 6’11”, 252lbs
2. (2) C Travis Ross (Dayton), Sophomore, 6’11”, 281lbs
3. (5) SG Joe Abney (Iowa), Sophomore, 6’7”, 208lbs
4. (3) PF Borut Peschat (Slovenia), 20 years old, 6’10”, 229lbs
5. (4) C Mark Hill (Temple), Senior, 6’9”, 279lbs

Thoughts – Abney moves up again while the top five stays the same. Lewis is becoming the clear number one draft pick but Ross is still a decent silver medal. Peschat has been known to be little lazy playing lesser opponents.

February Player of the Month – Lebron James, Miami Heat – 37.6 points, 7.1 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 2.4 steals and 0.7 blocks per game.

February Rookie of the Month – Dave Webb, Brooklyn Nets – 10.2 points, 7.3 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.7 steals and 1.8 blocks per game.

Our first game for March is a 111-105 win over the struggling Bulls. David Lee was one three Grizz players over 20 points with 23 points and 15 rebounds while Jarrett Jack is turning into a near triple double machine with 22 points, 11 rebounds and 9 assists. Derrick Rose was the best with 26 points but he just isn’t the same player as he was pre-injury.

Memphis Grizzlies 16-41

Minnesota always seem to harsh my buzz as they beat us easily 102-89. Kevin Love had 36 points and 18 rebounds and will be on the top of my free agency list. Wesley Fields top scored for us with 20 points but we shot 41% from the field.

Memphis Grizzlies 16-42

Woah, we weren’t ready for the Kings as they shoot 55% from the field to run us off the court with a 125-101 score line. DeMarcus Cousins had 34 points and 10 rebounds while Thomas Robinson helped him out with 26 points and 8 rebounds. Our best was Marcin Gortat with 19 points and 8 rebounds.

Memphis Grizzlies 16-43

We stuck around with the Hornets but they just have too much talent to take the win 96-88. Anthony Davis and Enes Kanter combined for 41 points and 13 rebounds but Lewis Vines had eight turnovers. David Lee took it to Anthony Davis with 19 points and 12 rebounds but fouled out trying to defend Davis.

Memphis Grizzlies 16-44

We lose to Orlando 114-94 but the best storyline was Bill Mallet. Mallet is still recovering from a broken elbow yet still puts up 28 points in the win. Gabe White had 21 points on 25 shots and he is shooting worse than Wesley Fields. David Lee was our best again with 22 points and 10 rebounds.

Memphis Grizzlies 16-45

That’s five losses in a row as we go down to the terrible Lakers 93-81. Ernest Jameson is become a top flight centre in the league with 22 points and 13 rebounds while Jonas Jerebko also had a double double. We didn’t have much to crow about as we shot 39% from the field but it was good to see Ivan Johnson get some court time with 12 points in 15 minutes.

Memphis Grizzlies 16-46

The losing streak has been snapped as we beat Atlanta 104-89. David Lee and Marcin Gortat combine for 32 points and 19 rebounds as we had six players in double figures. The Hawks aren’t the best anymore with Brandon Roy having their best game off the bench with 12 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists.

Memphis Grizzlies 17-46

We have a winning streak! It may be only two wins in a row but who cares? The Suns go down in this one 111-102 as Jarrett Jack was everywhere with 23 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists as Wesley Fields backs him up with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Arnette Moultrie was the best as an undersized C with 20 points and 6 rebounds.

Memphis Grizzlies 18-46

That streak was quick as we lose to Houston 100-84 in Houston. James Harden had26 points in the win as we shot an anaemic 32% from the field, punctuated by Wesley Fields’ 3/19 night. Onto the next game please.

Memphis Grizzlies 18-47

The Blazers were just too good for us with their 95-88 win. Damian Lillard had 31 points on the night while Kris Humphries had 22 points and 11 rebounds. David Lee was our best with 20 points and 9 rebounds.

Memphis Grizzlies 18-48

Kevin Durant scores 50 points on 17/25 FG but we somehow withstand that to win 112-109 over Oklahoma City. Marcin Gortat was amazing with 22 points and 16 rebounds while David Lee had 20 points and 13 rebounds on the night. The Thunder only have Durant and Russell Westbrook with their SG, PF and C positions being filled with below average young guys as Serge Ibaka has torn his ACL. I wonder if Durant will stick around with this very average team.

Memphis Grizzlies 19-48

Will we get our 20th win or our 50th loss first?

It’s not our 20th win as we get hammered 110-85 to Brooklyn. Brandon Rush had 25 points as he was hot all night, hitting six three pointers while Deron Williams was close to a triple double with 16 points, 12 assists and 8 rebounds. Marcin Gortat had 24 points and 8 rebounds but this game was over in the first quarter as the Nets outscored us 32-19.

Memphis Grizzlies 19-49

Would you guess against the 42-39 Rockets we would get out 20th win of the season? How about a 114-93 whacking of Houston? That’s what happened as Mike Conley had 23 points and 11 steals, the most in the four seasons I have been here. Wesley Fields scored 23 points with Jarrett Jack pouring in 20 points. James Harden had 17 points to lead the way for Houston.

Memphis Grizzlies 20-49

Marcin Gortat had 21 points and 14 rebounds as this team doesn’t want to lose 50 games as we beat Golden State 114-106. Wesley Fields had 21 points on only 10 shots as we shot 52% from the field. Harrison Barnes was the best for the Warriors with 22 points and for once Marc Gasol didn’t torch us, only playing 28 minutes before fouling out.

Memphis Grizzlies 21-49

There is the 50th loss as we went down 124-98 to Miami which no-one expected us to win. Lebron James had 33 points while Jerryd Bayless made up for Dwyane Wade’s 3/10 shooting night with 22 points. Marcin Gortat had 29 points as the Heat have a major problem at C because Chris Bosh is injured (not that he made much difference) but they have Josh Harrellson starting there.

Memphis Grizzlies 21-50

Our last game for March is a 98-89 loss to Sacramento as they were just too good for us. DeMarcus Cousins had 21 points and 10 rebounds as they had six players in double figures. David Lee was our best with 26 points on 14/16 free throws and Wesley Fields has gone back to his normal ways with a 4/17 night.

Memphis Grizzlies 21-51

With ten games to go in the season we are no longer last in the league, which goes to the 20-51 Mavs. Minnesota has roared back into the lead in the West with a 56-17 record while New Orleans is only 0.5 games behind. In the East New York is still number one with a 57-16 record, five games ahead of #2 Detroit. In good news for us Boston is now on the bottom of the conference with a 23-49 record.

Memphis Top Points
David Lee – 16.2
Marcin Gortat – 14.9
Jarrett Jack – 14.3

Memphis Top Assists
Jarrett Jack – 5.4
Mike Conley – 5.1
Ernest Davis – 4.4

Memphis Top Rebounds
David Lee – 7.8
Marcin Gortat – 7.7
Jarrett Jack – 5.4

League Top Efficiency
Lebron James (MIA) – 31.6 (32.7 points, 5.0 assists, 6.3 rebounds, 2.5 steals, 0.8 blocks)
Kevin Love (MIN) – 29.1 (30.3 points, 1.4 assists, 12.9 rebounds, 1.1 steals, 0.6 blocks)
Kevin Durant (OKC) – 28.6 (34.2 points, 1.2 assists, 7.6 rebounds, 1.1 steals, 1.3 blocks)

Rookie Top Efficiency
Dave Webb (BKL) – 14.7 (11.5 points, 1.5 assists, 7.5 rebounds, 1.3 steals, 1.8 blocks)
Pat Archie (DAL) – 11.5 (10.6 points, 2.1 assists, 4.9 rebounds, 0.5 steals, 0.7 blocks)
Paul Orvis (TOR) – 9.7 (8.3 points, 1.1 assists, 3.4 rebounds, 1.5 steals, 1.0 block)

Last Round of NBA Draft Prospects (previous rank in brackets)

1. (1) C Mark Lewis (NC State), Freshman, 6’11”, 252lbs
2. (2) C Travis Ross (Dayton), Sophomore, 6’11”, 281lbs
3. (3) SG Joe Abney (Iowa), Sophomore, 6’7”, 208lbs
4. (4) PF Borut Peschat (Slovenia), 20 years old, 6’10”, 229lbs
5. (5) C Mark Hill (Temple), Senior, 6’9”, 279lbs

Thoughts – As it’s been throughout the season this looks the top five going into the draft combine. Don’t sleep on #6 SF Jamaal Watson from BYU or #10 SF Christopher de Castro from Brazil who could sneak into the top five.

March Player of the Month – Lebron James, Miami Heat – 34.9 points, 6.3 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 2.8 steals and 1.0 block per game.

March Rookie of the Month – Dave Webb, Brooklyn Nets – 13.0 points, 6.7 rebounds, 1.2 assists, 0.9 steals and 2.5 blocks per game.

We are now the worst team in the league as Dallas beats us 99-95 behind OJ Mayo’s 21 points off the bench. Marcin Gortat was our best with 14 points and 16 rebounds while Wesley Fields had a 1/8 shooting night.

Memphis Grizzlies 21-52

We were never going to beat the 50-23 Blazers but we could of at least lead at some point in the game but we didn’t, going down 108-93. Damian Lillard is looking better and better with 29 points, 14 rebounds and 8 assists in the win and he is definitely a Plan B this off season if Plan A doesn’t work out. Marcin Gortat missed four shots all game for 24 points and 6 rebounds but fouled out in the third quarter.

Memphis Grizzlies 21-53

The 54-21 Pistons were as merciful as the Blazers as we don’t lead in this game either, losing 103-83. Greg Monroe had 21 points and 9 rebounds while Paul Gasol put in 22 points in only 21 minutes off the bench which I still don’t understand why the Pistons signed him. David Lee had 12 points and 10 rebounds and even though we had six players in double figures our leader was Jarrett Jack with only 16.

Memphis Grizzlies 21-54

Another loss and I think this team has checked out and wanting to go on holidays. We lose to Chicago 111-99 as Carlos Boozer wins player of the game with 25 points and 10 rebounds while Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah double up. Tim Duncan gets some court time and produces 16 points and 5 rebounds off the bench.

Memphis Grizzlies 21-55

Urgh, Portland again. They beat us 106-86 as Kris Humphries is the killer this time with 20 points and 16 rebounds. David Lee puts up 26 points and 11 rebounds while Wesley Fields has 21 points and 9 rebounds but these good teams at the end of the season are killing us.

Memphis Grizzlies 21-56

Holy moly we beat the 60-17 Timberwolves! Mike Conley had 22 points in the win as we keep the league leading T-Wolves to 35% from the field. Kevin Love shoots poorly to 32 points but I’m just over the moon and this wins gives the diehard fans something to cheer about after the awful season.

Memphis Grizzlies 22-56

Our 96-90 win over Utah guarantees that we don’t lose 60 games this season which is something I guess. Jarrett Jack had 21 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists in the win as all of our starters had at least 13 points. DeJuan Blair is filling in for Derrick Favors who has broken his elbow and had 20 points and 10 rebounds but they really didn’t have much in terms of stars.

Memphis Grizzlies 23-56

That’s three wins in a row as the team shuts me up for saying they checked out as we beat the Clippers 105-98. We outscored them 36-22 in the final term to take the win. Jarrett Jack and Mike Conley combine for 50 points as Charles Canady and Kevin Martin were held to 7/27 shooting combined. Blake Griffin was the best for the losers with 25 points and 19 rebounds.

Memphis Grizzlies 24-56

Our win streak was snapped with a 113-105 loss to Golden State as Steph Curry does it all with 31 points and 11 assists, ably helped by Harrison Barnes and his 20 points and 15 rebounds. David Lee was our best with 20 points but Ivan Johnson had 10 points and 11 rebounds off the bench as Marcin Gortat was in foul trouble all night.

Memphis Grizzlies 24-57

We get revenge against Dallas in our last game of the season with a 119-84 win as we got out to a lead of 45 points. Good way to say goodbye to the fans. Wesley Fields had 20 points as everyone on the team played at least 10 minutes, even fully recovered Ernest Davis who had 5 assists off the bench. Byron Mullens had 17 points in 22 minutes for Dallas.

Memphis Grizzlies 25-57

We didn’t come last, we didn’t even come second last as our burst at the end gave us a three game lead over Dallas and a one game lead over Utah. Every little win helps I guess. Our other draft pick from Boston will also be high as the Celtics finished at 27-55.

Western Conference Final Standings
1. New Orleans Hornets – 65-17 (.793)
2. Minnesota Timberwolves – 62-20 (.756)

Game Six
Portland 100 – New York 90 (POR 4-2)
Player of the Game – Kris Humphries – 29 points, 9 rebounds

Well that was a shock New York going down. At least they made it to the Finals but now Grant Hill is in the hot seat which is just stupid.

Lottery time! Come on ping pong balls papa needs a brand new pair of everything! We have the third and seventh best odds.

14th – Philadelphia (0)

Phoenix have also jumped meaning our other pick has dropped.

5th – Memphis (-2)

Dammit.

4th – New Orleans (-3)

At least we aren’t as unlucky as the Hornets.

3rd – Phoenix (+2)
2nd – Memphis (+5)

Oh well, second is better than seventh.

1st – Utah (+1)

I’m happy with second and fifth but I’m going to try and trade up to get Mark Lewis who will most likely be the number one draft pick.

Awards time and hopefully Wesley Fields can sneak into a All Rookie team.

I get the phone call I have been dreading all week.

“Hello Yaxley, now that the season is over I thought we’d have a quick chat about it. So tell me, how do you rate your performance this season?” He starts.

“To be honest we did OK but we could have done a lot better. But next season is where it is all going to come together! We have oodles of cap space, two top five draft picks and some really good young guys to build around.” I respond, almost pleading.

He doesn’t say anything for quite a while, I know he is tossing up between keeping me for another year or giving me the boot. At last he answers.

“Well you failed to put out there the team you told me you would and you spent more than we agreed upon (Here comes the boot). I can’t say I’m pleased with that (I’m just going to start cleaning out my office). Despite all of that I’m willing to let you keep your job for another year.”

WHAT!?! Quick, tell him yes!

“That you sir, you won’t regret it. This team is on the up.”

“It better be or you won’t.” He ends the conversation with what I already know, win or else. Sounds like New York all over again.

I go to Eddie Jordan and tell him that he did a decent job he wasn’t in our long term plans and fire him. We need an elite coach for the team I’m hoping to build and Rick Carlisle is the man to do it. He accepts my offer for a 3 year, $3.7 million deal to lead this team. I also sign 68 year old Jaymes Bekale, 39 year old Bill Singletary and legend Patrick Ewing to be our assistants in descending order. In other coaching news, Doug Collings goes to Dallas, Nate McMillan goes to Utah and Mike Dunleavy Sr goes back to the Clippers for one last run.

The NBA Draft Mock came out today –

1 – Utah – C Mark Lewis
2 – Memphis – C Travis Ross
3 – Phoenix – SF Christopher de Castro
4 – New Orleans – SG Joe Abney
5 – Memphis – PF Borut Peschat
6 – Atlanta – SF Jim Turner
7 – LA Clippers – SF Cederic Mapp
8 – Brooklyn – C Mark Hill
9 – LA Lakers – SG Bill Gearhart
10 – Oklahoma City – C Vitaly Ekomov
11 – Chicago – SF Kwame Cravens
12 – Orlando – C Peter Napier
13 – Indiana – SF Corry Hackworth
14 – Philadelphia – PF Dwayne Knight

I would love to come away with Lewis and Abney as I think Peschat may be a little too lazy to be truly elite. I don’t think Hill is going to slip to #8 and I do like Dwayne Knight who should go higher.

2016 NBA Draft

I can’t get Utah to trade down, not even when I give them everything except for the #5 pick.

1 – Utah – C Mark Lewis
Dammit, great pick here and will be a fantastic running mate for Derrick Favors.

2 – Memphis – C Travis Ross
There wasn’t anyone else good enough to go higher than Ross. He is still an outstanding player so I’m not that disappointed.

I trade our #5 and #33 picks to Phoenix to move up to #3 to snag my other target.

3 – Memphis – SG Joe Abney
At 6’7” he is a big 2 guard and an excellent scorer. The experts don’t really like this pick but I’m over the moon that I could snag him.

4 – New Orleans – SF Corry Hackworth
Wow, did not see him going this high. At 6’10”, 195lbs he is a stick and not the best defender. Massive reach here.

5 – Phoenix – SF Jim Turner
Decent pick by the Suns with our old pick. He is an excellent rebounder which should translate into the pros. Not the best pick but compared to the last one this is passable.

6 – Atlanta – C Mark Hill
He slipped one spot but it’s good to see him go high. The Hawks have a starting centre right here if Al Horford doesn’t come back.

7 – LA Clippers – SF Christopher de Castro
I would have thought he was going to sneak into the top five but as he is a little raw #7 is a good spot for him.

8 – Brooklyn – SF Cederick Mapp
The Nets wanted de Castro here but Mapp is a very good silver medal. He needs to screw his head on straight because he makes some bonehead plays but he will turn that around with proper coaching. Good pick.

9 – LA Lakers – SG Bill Gearhart
The bolter of the draft, I can see him being a top 5 of this class if he puts his mind to it. This pick can go either way but it’s good to see the Lakers having a backbone. Also to note, after Steve Nash retired he became the Lakers’ General Manager and made this pick.

10 – Oklahoma City – C Peter Napier
Centre is the Thunder’s biggest need and with the other centres off the board already they went with Napier. Good pick for the size starved Thunder.

11 – Chicago – SF Kyle Brinker
Two Dukies picked in a row but this pick won’t pan out. Brinker is not a lottery talent and I don’t think we would have picked him at #21 to be honest.

12 – Orlando – PF Borut Peschat
The Slovenian finally gets picked by the Magic. His drop was down to his lazy attitude and cold personality but all in all, the Magic got a genuine steal here.

I make another trade, it’s more an addition by subtraction deal.

Memphis trade:
SF Wesley Fields
2016 1st round pick (#21)

Portland trade:
C Ricardo Marquardt
PF Udonis Haslem

Winner – Portland. Marquardt is a decent bench big with outstanding defence but Fields and #21 is much, much better.

It may look bad but we gain another two million in savings while I have wanted Marquardt for a long time. Fields got on my nerves too much to be a long term part of this team.

13 – Indiana – SF Kwame Cravens
Very good scorer and rebounder and a good pick up at the end of the lottery.

14 – Philadelphia – C Vitaly Ekomov
Unbelievably raw at the moment and has terrible hands this guy is a huge project. He could work out but the Sixers will have to be very patient to see some rewards.

15 – Toronto – SG Jay Smith
16 – Sacramento – SF Arnold Woodman
17 – Cleveland – PG Marco Barker
18 – Houston – PG Ryan Robinson

Robinson is 5’6” 154lbs.

19 – Milwaukee – PF Dwayne Knight

Falls because of his awful personality. Thinks he is God’s gift to basketball already.

20 – Brooklyn – PF Donte Rock
21 – Portland – SF Jamaal Watson

Decent pick for our selection.

22 – Miami – SF Keith Selden
23 – Washington – PG Raoul Dumas

Who I would have picked with #21.

24 – Charlotte – SG Stefan Nitschke
25 – Detroit – PF Bart Flanders

Simpsons reference.

26 – Portland – SG Donte Tolliver
27 – Detroit – SG Bernard Belton
28 – Minnesota – PG Trello Price
29 – Charlotte – SF Tom Howard
30 – New Orleans – C Thomas Boone

I select PF Andy Williams and Stephan Wimbley with our second round picks and to be honest they are D-Leaguers at best. Joe Abney is pretty average at the moment but could be an outstanding scorer in the future while Travis Ross could be an elite C in the league in the future. Not as good a rebounder as I would have hoped but still very good. Mark Lewis on the other hand has all the tools to be THE best centre in the league.

There were a lot of trades this draft but only a handful were really important to document.

San Antonio trade:
C Tiago Splitter

Charlotte trade:
PF Patrick Patterson
2016 2nd round pick

Winner – Charlotte, just. Sure Splitter is a much better player but he is now stuck behind Al Jefferson and Dennis Freymond and I’m sure he wants to start.

Portland trade:
SG Eric Johnson

LA Lakers trade:
SF Kyle Singler
2016 2nd round pick

Winner – Lakers. Johnson is just flat out better than Singler and I have no idea why the Blazers traded him.

Philadelphia trade:
SG Joe Holmes

Sacramento trade:
SF Gary Gravitt
2016 2nd round pick

Winner – Sacramento. Copy and paste the last trade and just replace Johnson and Singler with Holmes and Gravitt.

Cleveland trade:
SG Altron Johnson
C Tony Wright
2016 2nd round pick

New York trade:
SG Avery Bradley

Winner – Cleveland. Altron is a poor man’s Bradley so it’s a dumb trade by New York. The Cavs are ridiculous now with Irving and Bradley in the backcourt.

Seems like you had a very good draft. Hopefully the two kids can blossom into cornerstones at some point.

Travis Ross is going to be a great player no doubt, not an MVP calibre player (which Mark Lewis is going to be) but I happy with him. Joe Abney is going to be my favourite player I think as he has the size and scoring skills to be a great SG. Sort of like Joe Johnson but a better rebounder and worse passer.

I renounce everyone on the roster that I can which gives us just over $31 million in cap space which should be enough for a Lebron James and an Anthony Davis.

Coming into Summer League play I’m very interested in how our two draft picks will go. Unfortunately not very good in our first game, a 91-87 loss to Boston. Travis Ross had 8 points and 7 rebounds while Joe Abney went 1/14 from the field for 11 points. Hassan Benton was also terrible, going 1/11 for 4 points.

Our next game, a 104-82 win over Detroit was better as Travis Ross had 16 points and 7 rebounds while Joe Abney put up 16 points of his own. Ricky Grundy, one of our walk ons had 22 points in 25 minutes.

Another win as Joe Abney is hitting his stride. We won 102-84 against Golden State as Abney scored 27 points to lead the way. Marquis Brown was the best for the Warriors with 23 points.

Our 75-72 loss to Denver was ugly as neither team shot about 36% from the field. Joe Abney was our only player in double figures with 19 points while Travis Ross went 3/14 from the floor for 8 points.

Our last summer league game was a 100-89 win over Miami. Travis Ross was our best with 20 points and 8 rebounds while Hassan Benton had 16 points and 8 assists in the win.

Onto free agency and it is a doozy, I’ll let the list tell the story.

SF Lebron James
PF Anthony Davis*
PF Kevin Love
SF Kevin Durant
C Andre Drummond*
SF Michael Kidd-Gilchrist*
SG Bradley Beal*
C Roy Hibbert
PF Thomas Robinson*
C Jonas Valanciunas*

*Restricted

That’s just the top ten which doesn’t include the like of Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Nic Batum, Al Horford, Joakim Noah, Damian Lillard and Eric Gordon. Unbelievable.

Straight away I offer Lebron James and Anthony Davis maximum contracts over four years which eats up all of our cap space and I sit and wait.

After a couple of days Kevin Durant re-signs with Oklahoma City for a max, five year deal which was to be expected.

The next day Anthony Davis re-signs with New Orleans. He told me that the Hornets offered them a five year deal which is what clinched it for him as we could only offer him a four year deal. I take that money and send it to Damian Lillard who had an amazing season and could be fantastic with us.

Good news and bad news a couple of days later. The good news is that Damian Lillard signed our offer sheet and we just have to wait to see if Portland will match it. The bad news is that Lebron James has signed with Utah of all places. I guess the allure of playing with Derrick Favors and Mark Lewis was just too great. Kevin Love re-signs with Minnesota which was also to be expected. I didn’t offer Love or Durant a contract because I was certain that they would re-sign with their teams which turned out to be right. I offer Bradley Beal a four year deal worth $13 million a year.

Big news! Not only has Bradley Beal decided to sign an offer sheet here but Andre Drummond has signed one with Orlando and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist has signed one with Denver! Maybe the Magic will keep a big name centre instead of losing one. Thomas Robinson also signs an offer sheet with Boston.

The next day Dwyane Wade signs with San Antonio, giving Dwight Howard a very deadly backcourt mate. Nic Batum, Eric Gordon and Tristan Thompson all re-sign with their respective teams. Gordon’s deal is a very nice one for the Hornets, a 3 year $27 million deal which is cheap for a SG like Gordon.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS. The Blazers don’t match Damian Lillard’s contract so he is all ours. An old favourite of mine Dion Waiters signs with the Clippers for a 4 year, $33 million deal.

NOOOOOOOOOOOO. On the day of matching the Wizards matched our offer for Beal which sucks. Detroit matches Drummond, Charlotte matches Kidd-Gilchrist and Sacramento matches Robinson. Damn. Jonas Valanciunas re-signs with Milwaukee. I offer Chris Bosh a 2 year, $24 million contract to become a Grizz. He is still injured but if I tell him he can be a PF again I’m sure he will join us.

Bosh signs the next day and is reportedly very happy about this team. Harrison Barnes signs an offer sheet with Denver as a silver medal for the Nuggets who missed out on Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. We still have just under $8 million in cap space and I’m just going to fill out the roster now.

I offer Joe Johnson a 2 year, $6 million year as well as Donatas Motiejunas on the same offer. I try and bring back Gerald Wallace for a 2 year, $4 million deal and hopefully he accepts.

Joe signs while Donatas takes a tender offer from Indiana which sucks. Joakim Noah re-signs with Chicago while Al Horford goes to Boston on a four year deal. There is still a lot of good big men available and even though we are pretty set I’m really interested in getting one cheap. So I send a lowball offer to Brook Lopez to see if he bites.

Gerald Wallace signs here while ex-Grizzly Mike Conley becomes Kyrie Irving’s back up with a one year deal.

David Lee goes to Miami to be Chris Bosh’s replacement while JJ Hickson signs with Atlanta. Brook Lopez signs here which is great, so does Brandon Rush and CJ Miles and I think I’m done. Bismack Biyombo signs with Sacramento for a massive bargain of one year, $3 million. Bargain!

Actually I lied, I sign Darrell Arthur and Mo Williams to two year, minimum deals to give us 15 players on the roster. Now I’m done.

Training camp comes and goes and there was some nice growth from some of our players. Ernest Davis has shown a little more potential, Joe Abney will probably be our starting SG while Travis Ross will probably be our starting PF which I don’t really like. We have Ross, Gortat, Lopez and Marquardt as capable centres but Joe Johnson is starting at SF so I go shopping.

Memphis trade:
C Marcin Gortat
2019 1st round pick

Boston trade:
SF Kawhi Leonard

Winner – Memphis. Gortat makes the Celtics one of the biggest teams in history, here is their starting five –

PG – John Weir (6’4”)
SG – Chandler Parsons (6’10”)
SF – Jared Sullinger (6’9”)
PF – Al Horford (6’10”)
C – Marcin Gortat (6’11”)

In fact they don’t have any bench PGs or SGs with their roster being composed of one PG, zero SG, two SF, five PF and four C. Hopefully they can pick up some guards off the free agency pile. On the other hand Memphis gets an outstanding defender who was an All Defense second teamer not long ago.

I’m very happy with this trade as it rounds out our team. At the moment we don’t have the best big man bench but we just have to stay above water until Chris Bosh comes back. The pick should be insignificant.

The pre-season polls are out and we have been picked ninth in the West which is decent I guess because I don’t think they took Chris Bosh into account, who will be back in about a month and a half.

Eastern Conference Pre Season Rankings
1. Detroit Pistons
2. Charlotte Bobcats
3. Washington Wizards
4. Cleveland Cavaliers
5. Milwaukee Bucks
Last – Miami Heat

It is the changing of the guard as all of these uber-talented young teams are finally playing up the their potential. I actually like this top five and nearly all of these teams have got here by sticking with their young guns. Miami last is on the money also as their Three Kings have all left to greener pastures after winning not seven, not six, not five, not four, not three, not two but one championship in their tenure.

Western Conference Pre Season Rankings
1. Sacramento Kings
2. Utah Jazz
3. New Orleans Hornets
4. Minnesota Timberwolves
5. Oklahoma City Thunder
Last – Dallas Mavericks

I’m pretty sure whoever writes these rankings is from California because the Kings should definitely not be above Utah. Sure they are good but having a starting five of Michael Fisher/JR Smith/Lebron James/Derrick Favors/DeJuan Blair with number one pick Mark Lewis off the bench should be #1. Dallas is all over the place and are just throwing stuff to the wall and seeing what sticks. I’m guessing that half way through the season Brandon Jennings is going to ask for a trade.

So here is your “I’m actually pretty excited about this team” 2016-17 Memphis Grizzlies –

PG – Damian Lillard
SG – Joe Johnson
SF – Kawhi Leonard
PF – Brook Lopez
C – Travis Ross
6th – Joe Abney
7th – Ernest Davis
8th – Richard Marquardt
9th – Brandon Rush
10th – Hassan Benton
11th – Gerald Wallace
12th – Darrell Arthur
13th – CJ Miles
14th – Mo Williams
IR – Chris Bosh (45 days to go)
