New York, New York! Bringing a championship home

Postby zike_42 » Thu Jan 24, 2013 8:49 pm

Our first game of the season is a disappointing 115-107 loss to the Clippers. Blake Griffin is electric with 26 points and 12 rebounds while Charles Canady puts up 21 points of his own. Brandon Rush gets the start at SG with only 3 points as Joe Johnson has 20 points off the bench. I think he is a bench player now, giving quick points but not being able to sustain it for a whole game. Damian Lillard has 21 points, 10 assists and 7 rebounds for us which is a great showing.

Memphis Grizzlies 0-1

With Joe Johnson, Hassan Benton and now Brandon Rush ahead of him I send Joe Abney to the D-League. It’s not a demotion, I just want him to get as much court time as possible and he won’t get it here in the pros this season. I still have high hopes for him in the future.

Ouch, that wasn’t pretty. We shoot 34% from the field in our 108-77 loss to Golden State. Again it is Marc Gasol doing the damage with 19 points and 11 rebounds while Steph Curry was close to the terrible triple double with 8 points, 10 assists and 9 turnovers. Travis Ross was our “best” with 13 points and 12 rebounds but turned the ball over six times.

Memphis Grizzlies 0-2

Our first home game is our first win, a 97-89 come from behind victory over Indiana. The last quarter was in our favour 31-17 which was a relief. Damian Lillard is earning his contract with 26 points, 11 assists and 7 rebounds while Joe Johnson was again great off the bench with 20 points in 29 minutes. Paul George was the Pacers’ best with 16 points and 14 rebounds.

Memphis Grizzlies 1-2

**TRADE**

Cleveland trade:
PF Amir Johnson
2017 2nd round pick

Philadelphia trade:
PG Changa Hendricks

Winner – Cleveland. Not because Hendricks is better than Johnson it’s just that Philly lose because they are admitting that Hendricks was a terrible pick at #2.

Another loss, this time a 119-103 downing to Washington. Bradley Beal has no sympathy for us with 27 points while John Wall doubles up. Travis Ross had 24 points but only 5 rebounds and 5 turnovers.

Memphis Grizzlies 1-3

Yes we are 1-3 at the moment but I’m not going to get angry because all of our starting five are new and they need time to work things out.

I’m ok, I’m ok. We lose 113-70 to Charlotte but I’m ok. Klay Thompson has made me eat crow as he is fantastic now, showing it with 28 points in this game. Damian Lillard was our best with 19 points but we shoot 29% from the field. Twenty nine percent!

Memphis Grizzlies 1-4

Orlando has started 4-1 but we make it 4-2 with a 115-90 confidence win. Damian Lillard was again our best with 25 points and 9 assists while Kawhi Leonard also stood up with 24 points and 9 rebounds. Gabe White was held to only 12 points after averaging over 25 in the last five games.

Memphis Grizzlies 2-4

That’s more like it, even if it is Sacramento. Damian Lillard has 32 points and 12 assists while Kawhi Leonard has 28 points and 6 steals in our 128-100 win over the Kings. DeMarcus Cousins has 24 points and 18 rebounds for the losers but shoots 12/19 from the foul line.

Memphis Grizzlies 3-4

Lebron James and his Jazz come to town and we smoke them 115-89. Our key free agency signing has 21 points, 8 assists and 6 rebounds as we have six players in double figures. Lebron has a game to forget (by his standards) with 13 points and 10 rebounds while Derrick Favors didn’t do anything either with 12 points and 6 rebounds. Great message game here.

Memphis Grizzlies 4-4

It’s the Kawhi and Damian show in our 112-80 win over Dallas. It seemed every play was Lillard (17 assists) passed to Leonard (30 points) who then scored, not that I’m complaining. Joe Johnson did his thing as well with 13 points in 18 minutes off the bench. Brandon Jennings had 21 points in the loss but they shot 35% from the field.

Memphis Grizzlies 5-4

After the game Gerald Wallace has a go at Brandon Rush and teammates had to break it up before it escalated. I sit Gerald down in my office and tell him straight, if you do that again you’re gone. I see him gulp before telling me he will try and do better in the future.

That’s five wins in a row as we beat the disappointing Lakers 113-105. Damian Lillard was our best again with 19 points and 14 assists but Brook Lopez was more important with 20 points and 9 rebounds as well as fouling out Ernest Jameson in only 18 minutes.

Memphis Grizzlies 6-4

The game against the Nuggets was a hair remover. We got out to a 18 point lead going into the fourth, then Denver roar back with a 39-24 last quarter to take the lead by two but luckily we had Joe Johnson on the court to hit the dagger three to win the game and break Denver’s heart. We escape Colorado with a 112-111 win. Damian Lillard had 18 points and 12 assists with five other Grizzlies in double figures. Kenneth Faried was amazing with 37 points and 11 rebounds but fouled out in the last five minutes so could not help his team in the clutch.

Memphis Grizzlies 7-4

The Nuggets get their revenge at Memphis with a vengeance, going up by 45 points to cruise to a 124-96 win. Kenneth Faried was again their best with 33 points and 7 rebounds but ex-Grizz Perry Jones III showed his skill with 34 points and 10 rebounds. Brook Lopez was our best with 22 points and 8 rebounds.

Memphis Grizzlies 7-5

In our 110-102 win over Phoenix it was again the Kawhi and Damian show. Leonard (32 points) and Lillard (15 assists) pretty much took over this game but it was fantastic to see Chris Bosh play 20 minutes off the bench with 10 points as he is slowly getting his legs back. Josh Smith is the best for the Suns with 23 points but they have Nate Roberts as C which just isn’t his position.

Memphis Grizzlies 8-5

Our last game for the month is a 114-96 loss to Minnesota and they are an elite team so I’m not that disappointed. Kevin Love had 37 points and 8 rebounds while Travis Ross was our best with 14 points before fouling out guarding Love.

Memphis Grizzlies 8-6

At 8-6 I’m not that disappointed because it’s such a new team and we had some tough games. We’re still fifth in the conference so once we click watch out! New Orleans has bolted out of the gate with a 13-1 record with Minnesota and Houston three games back. The Lakers are down the bottom again with a 3-14 record.

In the East Detroit have a slim lead at 11-3, only a game ahead of New York. In fact, Boston who are in eighth place are only 3.5 games behind Detroit, talk about a tight race so far. Miami are down the bottom to be expected with a 3-13 record.

Memphis Top Points
Damian Lillard – 19.2
Kawhi Leonard – 17.4
Travis Ross – 14.4

Memphis Top Assists
Damian Lillard – 10.2

Hassan Benton – 2.0

Memphis Top Rebounds
Kawhi Leonard – 6.8
Travis Ross – 6.1

League Top Efficiency
Kenneth Faried (DEN) – 32.6 (27.2 points, 1.9 assists, 11.7 rebounds, 2.4 steals, 2.3 blocks)
Kevin Love (MIN) – 30.3 (29.2 points, 1.7 assists, 12.3 rebounds, 1.3 steals, 0.6 blocks)
Anthony Davis (NOH) – 27.0 (18.8 points, 2.3 assists, 9.5 rebounds, 2.6 steals, 4.4 blocks)

November Player of the Month – Kenneth Faried, Denver Nuggets – 27.2 points, 1.9 assists, 11.7 rebounds, 2.4 steals and 2.3 blocks per game.

November Rookie of the Month – Travis Ross, Memphis Grizzlies – 14.4 points, 1.0 assists, 6.1 rebounds, 0.5 steals and 1.1 blocks per game.

It’s great to see Travis get some recognition for his excellent work and hopefully he can win a few more.

The first game of the month is a 107-95 loss to Utah as Derrick Favors erupts for 42 points and 15 rebounds in a magnificent display. I can see why Lebron choose the Jazz. Speaking of the Kings, he had 19 points on 6/17 shooting, very not royal. Damian Lillard was our best with 28 points and 9 rebounds as he hit eight three pointers on the night.

Memphis Grizzlies 8-7

Chris Bosh gets his first start of the season in our 120-100 win over Golden State with 11 points and 5 rebounds but he is still getting the hang of playing full minutes. Kawhi Leonard was our best with 23 points and 10 rebounds as seven Grizzlies were in double figures. Seven Warriors were in double figures as well but their highest scorer was Steph Curry with 18 points on 20 shots.

Memphis Grizzlies 9-7

Gerald Wallace has another go at Brandon Rush and he is outta here. Argh, I can’t trade him and I don’t want to just cut him so I’m going to wait until I can trade free agent signings because I want to trade another one of them. It’s not his fault just business.

Kawhi Leonard continues his fine form with 31 points, 9 rebounds and 6 steals in our 123-112 win over Houston. Another seven Memphis players were in double figures like last game as Brook Lopez and Damian Lillard double up. James Harden was a lone hand with 33 points but we just had too much depth.

Memphis Grizzlies 10-7

Even better news is that Kawhi Leonard was named the Player of the Week last week, good one him.

The Bobcats come back from 13 points down to fall at the last hurdle as we squeak out a 96-94 win. Who else but Kawhi Leonard was player of the game with 22 points and 6 rebounds with Brook Lopez backing him up with 21 points and 9 rebounds? Ty Lawson was the best for Charlotte with 20 points and 7 assists.

Memphis Grizzlies 11-7

We never let the Raptors lead in our 110-93 win as Brook Lopez went nuts with 23 points and 9 rebounds while Travis Ross had 16 points and 7 rebounds off the bench. Kevin Seraphin had 21 points but Paul Orvis had a night to forget with 5 points on 1/12 shooting.

Memphis Grizzlies 12-7

I make a trade that removes some chaff but also sets us up in the future. Also brings back an old favourite.

Memphis trade:
SG Hassan Benton
SF Gerald Wallace
C Brook Lopez
2017 2nd round pick
2018 2nd round pick

Cleveland trade:
SG Avery Bradley
PG Mike Conley
SF Kent Harris

Winner – Both. Lopez was stunting star-to-be rookie Travis Ross while Wallace and Benton were unhappy with their playing time. So Benton is now starting, Lopez gives the Cavs some good bench play while Wallace will probably still be unhappy. For the Grizz, Bradley is an elite defensive SG who will pair well with Kawhi Leonard while Conley is a great back up PG and won’t be upset about limited minutes.

I also cut Mo Williams as there isn’t enough time for four point guards and I know he will start complaining. There was another trade today –

Houston trade:
C Omer Asik
2017 2nd round pick

Phoenix trade:
SG Johnny Keys

Winner – Phoenix. Keys is a great guy but Asik is a much better player and will fit in nicely with the Suns’ team.

Our new starting five is a great one –
PG – Damian Lillard
SG – Avery Bradley
SF – Kawhi Leonard
PF – Chris Bosh
C – Travis Ross

With much better depth off the bench.

Our first test comes the next night against New York and we lose of course 101-86. Rudy Gay had 22 points for the winners while Anderson Varejao had 15 points and 16 rebounds. Chris Bosh had his best game as a part of this team with 22 points and 12 rebounds and Avery Bradley put up 20 points against his old, old team. Good to see everyone but I don’t think the team is as good as the one I had but that is just bias.

Memphis Grizzlies 12-8

We face up against the Rockets again and we beat them again 122-108 behind Avery Bradley’s 24 points and Chris Bosh’s 23 points and 8 rebounds. Bradley was so good in this game that not only did he score 24 points but he kept James Harden to 5/15 shooting for 19 points. Travis Ross had 15 points and 9 rebounds as well.

Memphis Grizzlies 13-8

The next night the Dwight-less Spurs (broken arm) come to town and we rightfully beat them 105-95. Damian Lillard was our best with 20 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists and it’s Ernest Davis who is getting the back up PG minutes, not Mike Conley. Dwyane Wade was the Spurs best with 19 points and 7 rebounds.

Memphis Grizzlies 14-8

In the Indiana-Oklahoma City game they were tied at 115 all at the end of regulation and then the Pacers stopped playing. The Thunder outscored them 18-0 in the extra period to win 133-115.

**TRADE**

Phoenix trade:
PF Zach Randolph
2017 2nd round pick

Orlando trade:
SG Wesley Mathews

Winner – Phoenix. Not only do have they started clearing out the PF glut but have a look at Orlando’s depth chart now (from top to bottom) – PG, SG, SF, C, C, C, PF, PF, PF, PF, PG, SG, SG. Not a good balance.

Another win, this time over the disappointing Lakers 109-92. Chris Bosh is fully healed now and showing his skills with 25 points and 9 rebounds with Darrell Arthur putting up 15 points after Kawhi Leonard fouled out early. Ernest Jameson is the only bright spark for the Lakers at the moment, this time having 25 points.

Memphis Grizzlies 15-8

Wonderful. I’m not talking about our 124-89 win over Sacramento even though it was but Kawhi Leonard and Avery Bradley were seen fighting after the game. I sit them down and tell them not to jeopardise a great thing we have here and Bradley agrees but Leonard is not entirely convinced. Going back to the game, Damian Lillard had 28 points and 10 assist in a great showing while CJ Miles poked his head up for 16 points in 16 minutes. DeMarcus Cousins was the best for the Kings with 18 points before fouling out in only 21 minutes.

Memphis Grizzlies 16-8

Miami are awful this season and we heap more misery on them with a 131-95 win. Chris Bosh tears his old team apart with 32 points in 32 minutes while Darrell Arthur had 16 points, 6 rebounds and 3 blocks off the bench. Tyler Hansbrough was the best for the Heat with 17 points off the bench. I think the Heat are doing what we did last season by giving short two year deals to decent players so they can get high draft picks and then sign big name free agents later.

Memphis Grizzlies 17-8

Another poor team comes to town with the 5-21 Mavs getting demolished 113-80 by the mighty hands of the Grizzlies. Too dramatic? Kawhi Leonard had 22 points and 9 rebounds while Avery Bradley put up 21 points of his own. Brandon Jennings is held to only 7 points on 3/10 shooting as Dallas shot 9/20 from the foul line.

Memphis Grizzlies 18-8

Great, Kawhi and Avery are yakking again and I tell them to stop, or else. I’m not afraid to trade integral pieces of this team if they step out of line and these two are very, very close. I think this situation is Kawhi’s doing and if it happens again he will be the one to go.

Detroit are a very good team and they flex their muscles, beating us 96-76. Andre Drummond shows why he earns the big bucks now with 23 points and 5 blocks while Carmelo Anthony had 19 points and 8 rebounds. Chris Bosh was our best with 18 points and 11 rebounds.

Memphis Grizzlies 18-9

**TRADE**

Orlando trade:
PF Borut Peschat

Toronto trade:
2017 1st round pick

Winner – Both. It’s too early to tell but Toronto is 13-19 and sinking slowly. Borut is one of the purest shooters I have ever seen and from anywhere on the court, however his defence and work ethic are subpar.

[OOC – Seriously he is one of the best shooters I have ever seen. I don’t think I’ve seen a player with 100/100 on both Inside Shooting and Outside Shooting, with scoring 59/74 so he could be a phenomenal scorer eventually.]

A 10-3 record for the month has put us third in the conference, one game behind Utah and four and a half games behind the leading Hornets (24-6). Dallas and Phoenix are last with only six wins so far for the season.

In the East, New York, Detroit and Cleveland are tied for first with 22 wins while Miami aren’t last, that honour goes to Atlanta at 5-23.

Memphis Top Points

Damian Lillard – 17.7
Avery Bradley – 16.5
Kawhi Leonard – 16.2

Memphis Top Assists
Damian Lillard – 9.7
Mike Conley – 2.7
Kawhi Leonard – 2.5

Memphis Top Rebounds
Chris Bosh – 6.9
Kawhi Leonard – 6.4
Travis Ross – 6.1

League Top Efficiency
Kevin Durant (OKC) – 28.7
Kenneth Faried (DEN) – 27.8
Kevin Love (MIN) – 27.6

Rookie Top Efficiency
Mark Hill (ATL) – 14.0
Travis Ross (MEM) – 12.1
Christopher de Castro (LAC) – 11.7

First Round of NBA Draft Prospects

1. SG Alexander Verhaeren (Belgium), 20 years old, 6’2”, 218lbs
2. SG Earl Oliver (Kentucky), Sophomore, 6’5”, 210lbs
3. SF Lorec Balosak (Slovenia), 18 years old, 6’9”, 234lbs
4. C Jeff Cunningham (Liberty), Sophomore, 6’9”, 281lbs
5. C LeRoy Jones (Morehead State), Freshman, 6’9”, 262lbs

Thoughts – A raw crowd at the moment as none of the top five look like they would be able to immediately help an NBA team but they are all dripping with potential. Balosak is averaging 20 points and 10 rebounds in Slovenia at only 18 years old which is outstanding.

December Player of the Month – Kevin Durant, Oklahoma City Thunder – 33.9 points, 7.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.6 steals and 1.1 blocks per game.

December Rookie of the Month – Mark Hill, Atlanta Hawks – 16.3 points, 6.1 rebounds, 0.7 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.2 blocks per game.

Good crop of rookie centres this year with Mark Hill, Vitaly Ekomov, Peter Napier, Mark Lewis and our own Travis Ross lighting it up so far.

We start the month on the right foot with a 108-76 win over Atlanta at home. Kawhi Leonard is making it hard for me to hypothetically trade him with 23 points, 6 rebounds and 4 blocks while Damian Lillard had 21 points and 9 assists. Mark Hill had the win over Travis Ross with Hill putting up 15 points and 10 rebounds while Ross had one point in 20 minutes.

Memphis Grizzlies 19-9

**TRADE**

Philadelphia trade:
C Spencer Hawes

Dallas trade:
PG Rodrigue Beaubois
2017 2nd round pick

Winner – Dallas. Hawes is a quality starting centre which he is going to do in Dallas. He is overpaid but you pay for size. Beaubois is bench fodder.

Philadelphia trade:
PF Markieff Morris

Orlando trade:
2017 1st round pick

Winner – Philadelphia. The pick will be fairly low but Morris is worth less.

The Jazz have been clicking and they rampage past us 105-84. Lebron James turned it on with 22 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals while Derrick Favors had 18 points and 12 rebounds. I’m surprised Mark Lewis isn’t starting yet with second year player Jonathan Benson getting the nod. Avery Bradley was our top scorer with 20 points.

Memphis Grizzlies 19-10

Another elite team and another loss, this time a 109-95 win for the Timberwolves. Kevin Love and Nikola Pekovic combined for 49 points and 22 rebounds in the win. Chris Bosh put up 26 points while Brandon Rush had 15 points off the bench but the big news was that Kawhi Leonard broke his nose trying to get over a Pekovic screen and will have to wear a face mask for the nearly two months.

Memphis Grizzlies 19-11

It doesn’t matter because he has another go at Avery Bradley and being true to my word I go shopping. I try for Gabe White from Orlando, Andrew Owens from Philly and Paul Orvis from Toronto but was rightly shot down. It was a pipe dream to think I could get those guys, especially White, but it doesn’t hurt to ask. I nearly pull the trigger on two of my ex players, Rudy Gay and Carmelo Anthony but I hold back because of price and age respectively. Eventually I do get someone who I think will be a great addition to the team.

Memphis trade:
SF Kawhi Leonard

Indiana trade:
SG Paul George

Winner – Memphis. On talent alone it’s a tie but the Pacers have now have Leonard and Danny Granger and neither of them are very receptive to playing SG. It will be interesting to see how that pans out.

There was another trade that day –

Phoenix trade:
SG Wesley Mathews

Indiana trade:
C Samuel Dalembert
2017 2nd round pick

Winner – Indiana. The Suns now have one PG, one SG, two SFs, four PFs and five Cs on their roster. Talk about unbalanced.

Our new team goes into Sacramento and comes out with a 95-88 win. Damian Lillard was our best with 16 points, 11 assists and 6 rebounds while our new recruit had 19 points of his own. Bismack Biyombo has been filling in for DeMarcus Cousins and did very nicely tonight with 21 points, 9 rebounds and 4 blocks.

Memphis Grizzlies 20-11

The next night we travel to Portland and promptly lose 113-100. Kris Humphries was the best on the court with 28 points and 11 rebounds while Lillard’s replacement Courtney Lee had 19 points. Our old Wesley Fields had a chip on his shoulder and put us to the sword with 15 points, 8 assists and 5 rebounds to show what he can do. Paul George shot 7/18 for 23 points to lead the way.

Memphis Grizzlies 20-12

We get back to our winning ways with a 117-101 beating of Phoenix. Damian Lillard was our best with 23 points and 12 assists while Paul George put up 25 points to help out. Arnette Moultrie was the best Sun with 27 points but that roster is terrible and needs a shake up.

Memphis Grizzlies 21-12

The Sixers don’t have a quality starting centre on their roster as Thad Young is playing there and it showed. Sure Young had 22 points but they didn’t have any inside presence as we win 105-80. Damian Lillard led the way with 22 points and 7 rebounds while Chris Bosh and Paul George combined for 38 points and 19 rebounds.

Memphis Grizzlies 22-12

The Hornets are the best team in the league at the moment and we just aren’t there yet so to only loss 113-105 is a pretty good result. Eric Gordon had 32 points and Enes Kanter and Anthony Davis combined for 34 points and 26 rebounds in the win. Paul George was everywhere with 28 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 7 steals.

Memphis Grizzlies 22-13

**TRADES**

Dallas trade:
SF Moe Harkless

Orlando trade:
PF Markieff Morris
2017 2nd round pick

Winner – Dallas. Morris is a better player than Harkless and has a better contract, enough said.

Orlando trade:
SF Al-Farouq Aminu

Minnesota trade:
SF Wesley Johnson
2017 2nd round pick

Winner – Orlando. Johnson has an expiring contract but other than that isn’t good for anything.

Milwaukee trade:
SG Jon Eyles
C Emeka Okafor

Philadelphia trade:
PG Rodrigue Beaubois
2017 2nd round pick

Winner – Both. Rajon Rondo is injured for another couple of weeks so the Bucks wanted a back up PG while Okafor is a good bench big that will help out the Sixers.

It’s George vs. Leonard as we go to Indiana and although Paul didn’t play too well (5/15 FG for 16 points) he did better than Kawhi, who is starting at SG. Leonard shot 0/2 for a duck egg and three turnovers as we won easily 119-83. Damian Lillard was amazing with 35 points and 8 assists on 9/11 three point shooting as Avery Bradley destroyed Leonard for 24 points. Paul Millsap was the Pacers’ best with 19 points and 10 rebounds but turned the ball over six times.

Memphis Grizzlies 23-13

**TRADE**

New Orleans trade:
PG Raymond Felton

Chicago trade:
C Aaron Gray
2017 2nd round pick

Winner – Chicago. Let’s see, Chicago gets a great bench PG who will help immensely while New Orleans got a 13th man who will only see minutes when hell freezes over.

I don’t know why Felton has been traded so much, here is his playing history –
2005-2009 – Charlotte Bobcats
2010 – New York Knicks/Denver Nuggets
2011 – Portland Trailblazers
2012 – New York Knicks/Brooklyn Nets
2013 – Brooklyn Nets/New York Knicks
2014 – New York Knicks
2015 – Brooklyn Nets/New Orleans Hornets
2016 – New Orleans Hornets/Chicago Bulls

Crazy I say.

We go to Chicago and they kill us 107-84. Raymond Felton is good off the bench with 6 points and 3 assists in 12 minutes as Jake Chase (22 points), Luol Deng (21 points) and Joakim Noah (20 points) all getting to the 20 point barrier. Travis Ross really impressed me with 26 points and 11 rebounds, showing what I’m hoping will be the norm in a few years.

Memphis Grizzlies 23-14

Ah damn, even though Detroit is really good we should still be able to beat them at home and at three quarter time it looked like we would. Then the Pistons went on a 34-16 run in the final term to take the win 105-99. Greg Monroe was fantastic with 16 points, 10 rebounds, 7 assists and 5 steals. Damian Lillard was our best with 21 points but we just choked this game away.

Memphis Grizzlies 23-15

That’s three straight losses as we go down 125-104 against Brooklyn in our house which is just embarrassing. Terrence Ross has 28 points while Deron Williams had 22 points and 12 assists which is exactly the reason why I brought in Avery Bradley. Hmm. All of our starters were in double figures while Brandon Rush had 11 points (4/4 FG, 3/3 3P) in only 7 minutes off the bench.

Memphis Grizzlies 23-16

OK this is getting ridiculous, we get well and truly flogged 111-79 against Oklahoma City. Kevin Durant put up 46 points, 13 rebounds and 6 assists as the Thunder outrebound us 57-37 and we shot 31% from the field. Damian Lillard had 21 points for the third straight game but Paul George went 4/19 from the field.

Memphis Grizzlies 23-17

I get to exhale when we beat Boston 117-95 at home to slightly get this ship back on track. Chris Bosh led the way with 28 points and 14 rebounds while Avery Bradley put up 24 points as well. John Weir was the best Celtic with 17 points and 7 assists and Chandler Parsons, who I was tempted to trade Kawhi Leonard for had 15 points, 7 assists and 6 rebounds.

Memphis Grizzlies 24-17

Our last game of the month is a ‘monkey get off our back’ kind of game as we beat Minnesota 115-100. Damian Lillard went 11/14 from the field for 28 points and 13 assists, most of them going to Chris Bosh’s 30 points. Ricky Rubio had 17 points and 14 assists but Kevin Love was held to 4/14 shooting for 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Memphis Grizzlies 25-17

After a disappointing 7-8 January we are now sixth in the West, nine and a half games behind the leading New Orleans Hornets who are on 37-8. Utah are three games behind and then daylight. Dallas are still last with a 10-37 record.

In the East Detroit are leading the way with a 33-13 record, only half a game ahead of Cleveland and one and a half ahead of New York. Atlanta and Miami are level for the worst record in the conference, both at 11-34.

Memphis Top Points
Paul George – 18.6
Damian Lillard – 18.3
Chris Bosh – 16.8

Memphis Top Assists
Damian Lillard – 9.3
Paul George – 3.0
Mike Conley – 2.3

Memphis Top Rebounds
Chris Bosh – 7.4
Paul George – 7.2
Travis Ross – 6.3

Joe Abney has been tearing up the D-League, averaging 19.2 points, 2.2 assists, 5.1 rebounds, 0.7 steals and hasn’t blocked a shot yet for the Idaho Buckaroos. He won’t get called up this season but I’m really excited about his potential next campaign.

League Top Efficiency
Anthony Davis (NOH) – 28.4 (20.0 points, 1.8 assists, 10.2 rebounds, 2.2 steals, 4.3 blocks)
Kenneth Faried (DEN) – 28.1 (23.6 points, 1.8 assists, 11.4 rebounds, 2.3 steals, 2.4 blocks)
Lebron James (UTA) – 27.7 (27.3 points, 5.5 assists, 5.6 rebounds, 1.9 steals, 0.8 blocks)

Rookie Top Efficiency
Mark Hill (ATL) – 12.7 (13.4 points, 1.0 assists, 5.5 rebounds, 0.8 steals, 0.8 blocks)
Travis Ross (MEM) – 12.4 (12.2 points, 1.0 assists, 6.3 rebounds, 0.5 steals, 1.4 blocks)
Peter Napier (OKC) – 11.8 (9.1 points, 0.9 assists, 6.3 rebounds, 0.1 steals, 1.2 blocks)

Second Round of NBA Draft Prospects (previous rank in brackets)

1. (NR) SF Marcello Locatelli (Italy), 21 years old, 6’9”, 228lbs
2. (4) C Jeff Cunningham (Liberty), Sophomore, 6’9”, 281lbs
3. (3) SF Lorec Balosak (Slovenia), 18 years old, 6’9”, 234lbs
4. (1) SG Alexander Verhaeren (Belgium), 20 years old, 6’2”, 218lbs
5. (5) C LeRoy Jones (Morehead State), Freshman, 6’9”, 262lbs

Thoughts – It’s the foreign invaders at the moment as three of the top five are from Europe. It also looks like the crop of the small centres as Cunningham and Jones are only 6’9” but at least they have some bulk to them to make up for being undersized.

January Player of the Month – Lebron James, Utah Jazz – 28.4 points, 4.9 rebounds, 6.2 assists, 1.7 steals and 0.7 blocks per game.

January Rookie of the Month – Christopher de Castro, Los Angeles Clippers – 13.4 points, 5.1 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 0.6 steals and 1.1 blocks per game.

Wow, what a display from us as we run the Clippers off the floor with a 134-103 win. Damian Lillard had 35 points and 8 assists while Paul George (26 points, 12 assists), Travis Ross (26 points) and Avery Bradley (20 points) all shot the lights out but it was Chris Bosh who missed out, fouling out in only nine minutes. Blake Griffin was good with 21 points on 9/11 shooting but also fouled out in only 25 minutes.

Memphis Grizzlies 26-17

The next night we take down the Spurs in Texas 105-92 behind Avery Bradley’s 31 points and 8 rebounds. Chris Bosh actually played some minutes and had 21 points but Paul George turned it over nine times. Dwight Howard was the Spurs best with 26 points and 13 rebounds however Dwyane Wade went 3/17 from the floor.

Memphis Grizzlies 27-17

That’s three wins in a row to start the month as we beat Utah as Damian Lillard blows up with 44 points on 14/26 shooting, his highest ever. Derrick Favors had 35 points and 16 rebounds but Lebron James had one of his worst games ever with 6 points (1/7 FG) and only 26 minutes but had no fouls, just a bad game.

Memphis Grizzlies 28-17

**TRADE**

Cleveland trade:
C Benjamin Heskett
SG Anthony Morrow
SG Edem Claxton

Miami trade:
PF Carl Landry
2017 2nd round pick

Winner – Neither. Landry is better than all of the other players combined but he is stuck behind four better big men while for Miami, the three traded players won’t do much for the team.

Our best back up big man sprains his wrist in our 97-90 win over Milwaukee. Darrell Arthur is his name so it will be a bit harder with him not 100% for two weeks. Avery Bradley was our best with 23 points but Damian Lillard was close with 18 points, 8 assists and 8 rebounds. Ersan Ilyasova had 24 points and 9 rebounds for the Bucks while my ex-favourite Thomas Cooper had 18 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists at SF before fouling out.

Memphis Grizzlies 29-17

**TRADE**

LA Clippers trade:
SG Marshon Brooks

Cleveland trade:
PG Changa Hendricks
C Kevin Garnett

Winner – Cleveland. #2 pick Hendricks has been traded again as the Clips think he still has some potential and not that he was a terrible pick. Garnett was released so it’s Brooks vs. Changa and Brooks wins.

Rudy Gay has a broken hand while Chris Paul is not fully healed but it doesn’t matter as the Knicks beat us on our home court 114-102. Andrew Seitz was player of the game filling in for Gay with 24 points while Ekpe Udoh has 20 points and 12 rebounds while Andre Iguodala is finally starting at SG. Damian Lillard was our best with 19 points and 9 assists.

Memphis Grizzlies 29-18

I know Kevin Durant can turn it on in an instant but he always seems to do it against us, this time pouring in 48 points (14/23 FG, 17/17 FT) in their 113-89 humiliation of our home court. Avery Bradley and Damian Lillard combine for 57 points but no other Grizz scored more than 8 points which was embarrassing.

Memphis Grizzlies 29-19

After three wins in a row we lose three in a row with a 125-115 loss to Houston. James Harden was the best by far with 33 points and 10 assists as they shoot 12/24 from three point land. Paul George is our best with 28 points, 11 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals as Chris Bosh and Damian Lillard doubled up.

Memphis Grizzlies 29-20

Our last game before the All Star weekend is a Grizz win over Toronto 89-70. Avery Bradley was our top scorer with 20 points and 9 rebounds but it was our defence that won it for us. Andrea Bargnani went 4/22 for 12 points while the backcourt of Jeremy Lin and Monta Ellis combined for 5/20 shooting. This is what I want to see every night.

Memphis Grizzlies 30-20

The All Star weekend rolls around as our own Kent Harris wins the Slam Dunk Contest after coming second in the preliminaries. He beat Denver’s Aaron Smith pretty easily after Smith stuffed up his second dunk.

In the Long Distant Shootout New Orleans’ Ryan Anderson also came from second place in the first round to win the competition. He went nuts in the final, scoring 23 to beat Detroit’s John Johnson by a massive eight points.

In the Rookie game the Sophomores well and truly walloped the Rookies 139-97 after behind up by 49 points in the third quarter. Dave Webb from Brooklyn took the MVP award with 24 points, 12 rebounds and 6 blocks as eight Sophs scored in double figures. For the Rookies Minnesota’s Trello Price was the best with 17 points. Travis Ross was a Rookie bench player, playing eight minutes for four points as our only participant. Ex-Grizzly Wesley Fields had 12 points and 5 assists.

Speaking for Fields, he is playing quite well with the Blazers averaging 12.6 points, 5.2 assists and 4.2 rebounds as he has started 50 out of the 53 games he has played. He is only shooting 40.3% from the field and turns the ball over 3.5 times a game though which are a couple of the major reasons why I traded him.

The Western Conference has the home court advantage this year and it helped out as they take a 41-23 first quarter lead all the way to the end, winning 131-118. Russell Westbrook wins the All Star MVP with 25 points, 9 assists and 7 rebounds for the winners. The West shot 56% from the field and 55% from three as they lead from the first tip off. Lebron James and Kevin Durant both put up 21 points for the West. The best for the East was Gabe White with 15 points, while Chris Paul had 15 points and 5 assists in 15 minutes off the bench. We didn’t have any participants which is annoying, I was sure that Damian was going to be in the team, being better than Brandon Jennings. One of my old favourites Dion Waiters got a nod which was fantastic for him and the struggling Clippers.

Eastern Conference All Star Starters
Kyrie Irving, Cleveland Cavaliers
Klay Thompson, Charlotte Bobcats
Gabe White, Orlando Magic
Paul Millsap, Indiana Pacers
Andrew Bynum, Cleveland Cavaliers

Western Conference All Star Starters
Russell Westbrook, Oklahoma City Thunder
Eric Gordon, New Orleans Hornets
Kevin Durant, Oklahoma City Thunder
Kenneth Faried, Denver Nuggets
Dwight Howard, San Antonio Spurs

Our first game back from holidays was a 109-91 flogging by Denver as we were still in party mode. Kenneth Faried had 16 points and 12 rebounds while ex-Grizz Perry Jones III has been playing very well with 23 points this game. Damian Lillard was our best with 23 points and 8 assists whiel Paul George doubled up.

Big trades near the deadline –

New Orleans trade:
SF Michael Call

Brooklyn trade:
C Kevin Phillips
2017 2nd round pick

Winner – New Orleans. Phillips may look mediocre on the surface but he does what is needed for a team. He rebounds and defends like a mad man and makes the Hornets even more dangerous.

Minnesota trade:
PG Courtland Patterson (released)
SF Andrei Kirilenko
2017 1st round pick

Toronto trade:
SG Monta Ellis

Winner – Minnesota. Patterson was released, Kirilenko is nothing like he used to be and at best an expiring contract and the pick will be in the 20s. Ellis could make the T-Wolves into legit championship contenders.

Our next game is a 125-107 win over Miami as we shot 55% from the field. Paul George has 23 points while Damian Lillard has 25 points on 7/9 shooting which is phenomenal. Danilo Gallinari was the best for the Heat with 21 points and 8 rebounds.

Memphis Grizzlies 31-21

**TRADE**

San Antonio trade:
PF Patrick Patterson

Minnesota trade:
SG Jordan Crawford

Winner – Minnesota. The newly acquired Monta Ellis plays a lot of minutes, I mean a LOT (last five seasons – 37 mpg) so Crawford was expendable. They needed some big man depth so Patterson fits the bill there. The Spurs didn’t need to do this as they have D-Wade and Jarrett Jack at SG while only SF Jamal Howell who can properly play PF off the bench apart from bench warmers.

The Kings haven’t been good for a long time now and we make sure they aren’t good against us with a 114-82 drubbing. Paul George has 25 points and 12 rebounds as our whole starting five are in double figures. I’m sure Sacramento are going to be interested in trading DeMarcus Cousins with the way Bismack Biyombo has been playing lately and tonight he had 22 points, 11 rebounds and 6 blocks.

Memphis Grizzlies 32-21

We win again, this time to the tune of 114-97 over Portland. Chris Bosh had his way with LaMarcus Aldridge with 26 points and 8 rebounds while Damian Lillard put up 24 points and 9 assists. Wesley Fields had a ‘five’ night, with 10 points (5x2), 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 turnovers.

Memphis Grizzlies 33-21

In a squeaker at the Staples Centre we just get up over the Lakers 95-91 as there was 13 lead changes throughout the game. Paul George was electric with 37 points while Travis Ross made up for Chris Bosh’ 1/11 night with 23 points and 7 rebounds. Ernest Jameson is making his case for best C in the league with 28 points and 15 rebounds but the team was undone with 27 turnovers compared to our 12.

Memphis Grizzlies 34-21

The last game of February makes it a five game winning streak as we trounce the Bulls 108-95 behind Damian Lillard’s 25 points and 9 assists with Chris Bosh (18 points, 14 rebounds) playing Robin. Derrick Rose was also in fine form with 25 points but they were missing their sharpshooter Jake Chase through injury.

Memphis Grizzlies 35-21

I have really been enjoying Ricardo Marquardt’s play off the bench so I give him a $3.6 million extension over three years which is a great price for a back up C. He’s only 25 years old so I’m hoping he sticks around for a while now.

After starting the month 4-0, then going 1-4 in the next five and finishing the month on a five game winning streak we have been bumped up to fourth in the West. New Orleans are still way out in front with a 46-11 record, a massive six games in front of second place Utah. Dallas are still going well if their plan was to tank, with a 13-44 record.

In the East it’s still stupidly tight as Cleveland and Detroit are square at 42-18 while New York are only a half game back. Miami are looking to next season at 15-42.

Memphis Top Points
Damian Lillard – 19.3
Paul George – 18.2
Avery Bradley – 16.2

Memphis Top Assists
Damian Lillard – 8.9
Paul George – 3.4
Ernest Davis – 2.1

Memphis Top Rebounds
Chris Bosh – 7.6
Paul George – 6.9
Travis Ross – 6.1

League Top Efficiency
Anthony Davis (NOH) – 28.5 (20.4 points, 1.8 assists, 10.2 rebounds, 2.4 steals, 4.1 blocks)
Kenneth Faried (DEN) – 28.0 (23.3 points, 1.8 assists, 11.6 rebounds, 2.3 steals, 2.5 blocks)
Lebron James (UTA) – 27.8 (27.0 points, 5.7 assists, 5.6 rebounds, 1.8 steals, 0.8 blocks)

Rookie Top Efficiency
Mark Hill (ATL) – 13.2 (13.7 points, 0.9 assists, 5.8 rebounds, 0.8 steals, 0.8 blocks)
Travis Ross (MEM) – 12.6 (12.2 points, 1.0 assist, 6.1 rebounds, 0.5 steals, 1.5 blocks)
Vitaly Ekomov (PHI) – 11.7 (11.7 points, 0.6 assists, 4.9 rebounds, 0.5 steals, 0.4 blocks)

Third Round of NBA Draft Prospects (previous rank in brackets)

1. (NR) SG Earl Oliver (Kentucky), Sophomore, 6’5”, 210lbs
2. (4) SG Alexander Verhaeren (Belgium), 20 years old, 6’2”, 218lbs
3. (NR) PG Bret Davis (Central Arkansas), Sophomore, 5’11”, 182lbs
4. (2) C Jeff Cunningham (Liberty), Sophomore, 6’9”, 281lbs
5. (3) SF Lorec Balosak (Slovenia), 18 years old, 6’9”, 234lbs

Thoughts – This draft will definitely not be as good as the last one and there isn’t one truly outstanding player here. No Anthony Davis or Mark Lewis that teams are striving to be bad for. There is a lot of turnover in the top five which means that someone with picks 4-7 won’t be too disappointed with their selection (unless Changa Hendricks is in the draft again).

February Player of the Month – Kevin Durant, Oklahoma City Thunder – 32.1 points, 7.7 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.0 steal and 0.9 blocks per game.

February Rookie of the Month – Mark Hill, Atlanta Hawks – 14.6 points, 6.4 rebounds, 0.5 assists, 0.8 steals and 1.0 block per game.

Alright, I really don’t think we can get New Orleans but we are only two and a half games behind Oklahoma City for third and a half game in front of Denver for fifth so we need to keep winning.

It’s a good start as we beat the elite Cavs 113-97 at home. Paul George didn’t score the most points but he was the most important with 18 points, 7 assists, 5 rebounds and 5 steals while Chris Bosh and Damian Lillard both added 20 points. Kyrie Irving was the best for the Cavs with 19 points and 14 assists before fouling out.

Memphis Grizzlies 36-21

Another win, this time a come from behind 110-105 victory over Brooklyn. Damian Lillard is becoming a top five PG in the league and destroyed Deron Williams for 26 points and 10 assists as Paul George backed him up with 24 points and 9 rebounds. Dave Webb was the Nets’ best with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Memphis Grizzlies 37-21

It’s off to Boston and Marcin Gortat as the old friend had 17 points and 7 rebounds but it wasn’t enough as we beat the Celtics 109-99. Paul George had 28 points for us but the Celtics had the two best statlines – Chandler Parsons 1/16 FG for 2 points, 10 assists and 6 rebounds. Ben Chambers – 12/14 FG for 29 points and 9 rebounds in only 29 minutes off the bench.

Memphis Grizzlies 38-21

Whenever we get a good run it’s always the Hornets that break it, this time a 111-87 laugher. Anthony Davis really is a MVP candidate with 18 points, 20 rebounds, 4 assists, 5 blocks and 4 steals in the win while Enes Kanter and Lewis Vines doubled up. We just weren’t in the game at any stage, shown by our 39% FG.

Memphis Grizzlies 38-22

Wow! What a game. Being down by 25 points at half time we storm back with a 41-24 last quarter to force overtime against Denver, then to take the extra period 20-9 to win the game 132-121. Phew, I was on the edge of my seat for the last half an hour. Paul George had 30 points, 11 assists, 7 rebounds and 5 steals and Avery Bradley added 34 points as our starters scored 121 of the 132 points scored. Kenneth Faried was the Nuggets best with 27 points and 14 rebounds with Lou Williams putting up 23 points and 9 assists.

Memphis Grizzlies 39-22

Well that third quarter was a letdown in our 93-83 loss to Washington. We were up by eight at half time only to lose the third 23-7 and never got back into the game. Bradley Beal was fantastic with 19 points and 9 rebounds as Alton Hardy, their second year player had 19 points and 7 rebounds. Damian Lillard was again our best with 9 points, 11 assists and 9 rebounds before fouling out.

Memphis Grizzlies 39-23

Great, not only did we get stomped by the 18-46 Hawks 98-79 Damian Lillard has back spasms and will be out for over a week. Mark Hill and Demond Lewis are playing really well together, combining for 33 points, 29 rebounds and 9 blocks in this game. Chris Bosh was our best with 19 points and 10 rebounds but shot 4/17 from the field.

Memphis Grizzlies 39-24

The Cavs get their revenge with a 127-116 win as they outscore us 73-48 in the second half. Kyrie Irving and Andrew Bynum combined for 48 points, 19 rebounds and 17 assists but it was ex-Grizz Brook Lopez who did the damage with 21 points on 8/11 shooting off the bench. Chris Bosh was our best with 24 points and 10 rebounds.

Memphis Grizzlies 39-25

Damian Lillard takes the night off because of his injury but it doesn’t matter as we win anyway, a 112-88 smooshing of Milwaukee. Paul George led the way with 25 points and 6 steals and new PG starter Mike Conley had 17 points and 8 assists. Rajon Rondo and Iman Shumpert combined for only 12 points and 7 assists while Thomas Cooper fouled out in 13 minutes, not before scoring 12 points.

Memphis Grizzlies 40-25

We started slowly against the lowly Mavs but once we got into gear they couldn’t keep up with us as we blow them out 120-94. Avery Bradley was outstanding with 32 points but it was newly healed Damian Lillard who stole the show as he kept All Star Brandon Jennings to 6/19 shooting to make sure we got the win.

Memphis Grizzlies 41-25

Ah ha! We keep Kevin Durant to 9/21 shooting for ‘only’ 27 points and 11 rebounds and it means we won the game 96-92. Paul George was the stand out with 23 points and 8 assists as Travis Ross had 9 points, 10 rebounds and 5 blocks to do all the dirty work in the game.

Memphis Grizzlies 42-25

Travis Ross fouls out in 16 minutes but it’s Ricardo Marquardt to the rescue in our 108-86 win. Marquardt had 10 points, 10 rebounds and 5 blocks off the bench to nullify Meyerts Leonard while Damian Lillard (20 points) and Paul George (21 points, 10 rebounds) did all the heavy scoring. James Harden is held to only 4/16 shooting in the loss.

Memphis Grizzlies 43-25

That’s five wins in a row as we beat up on the Clippers 114-90 behind Chris Bosh’s 19 points and 12 rebounds and six other Grizz players in double figures. Blake Griffin was a lone hand in the loss with 22 points and 13 rebounds but took 24 shots to get those points.

Memphis Grizzlies 44-25

It’s all well and good to beat teams we are supposed to beat but when we keep losing to the elite teams that we need to beat to be seen as a contender it’s not a happy feeling. We went down to Minnesota in Memphis 98-83 and we looked flat and uninterested. Kevin Love had 26 points and 13 rebounds in the win as we didn’t have anyone of interest.

Memphis Grizzlies 44-26

The last game of the month is a 114-107 loss to the very average Sixers. Landry Fields had 25 points in 17 minutes off the bench which really killed us. Avery Bradley was our best with 26 points.

Memphis Grizzlies 44-27

Urgh, after a five game winning streak we only finished the month 10-6 which slips us down to fifth and out of first round home court advantage as Denver are now a half game in front of us. New Orleans (56-16) and Utah (52-21) are the only two West teams with 50 wins and I would love to get to that milestone. Dallas are last still with a 18-56 record.

There are three 50 wins teams in the East already with Cleveland (53-21) a half game in front of Detroit (52-21) and two games in front of New York (50-22). Miami are gunning for the number one pick with a 17-55 record.

Memphis Top Points
Damian Lillard – 18.3
Paul George – 18.1
Chris Bosh – 16.3

Memphis Top Assists
Damian Lillard – 8.7
Paul George – 3.6
Mike Conley – 2.2

Memphis Top Rebounds
Chris Bosh – 8.1
Paul George – 6.9
Travis Ross – 6.1

League Top Efficiency
Kenneth Faried (DEN) – 29.6 (23.7 points, 1.8 assists, 12.4 rebounds, 2.3 steals, 2.8 blocks)
Lebron James (UTA) – 28.6 (28.4 point, 5.4 assists, 5.9 rebounds, 1.7 steals, 0.8 blocks)
Anthony Davis (NOH) – 27.9 (20.0 points, 1.7 assists, 10.3 rebounds, 2.4 steals, 3.9 blocks)

Rookie Top Efficiency
Mark Hill (ATL) – 13.2 (13.9 points, 0.9 assists, 5.7 rebounds, 0.8 steals, 0.9 blocks)
Travis Ross (MEM) – 12.6 (12.3 points, 0.9 assists, 6.1 rebounds, 0.5 steals, 1.5 blocks)
Vitaly Ekomov (PHI) – 12.3 (12.1 points, 0.5 assists, 5.3 rebounds, 0.5 steals, 0.4 blocks)

Last Round of NBA Draft Prospects (previous rank in brackets)

1. (2) SG Alexander Verhaeren (Belgium), 20 years old, 6’2”, 218lbs
2. (4) C Jeff Cunningham (Liberty), Sophomore, 6’9”, 281lbs
3. (1) SG Earl Oliver (Kentucky), Sophomore, 6’5”, 210lbs
4. (5) SF Lorec Balosak (Slovenia), 18 years old, 6’9”, 234lbs
5. (NR) SF Marcello Locatelli (Italy), 21 years old, 6’9”, 228lbs

Thoughts – The European guys are the most impressive at the moment but it has to be said that Cunningham is still #2 even playing at a minnow college. Usually at this stage smaller college players drop off because their opposition is inferior to the ACC and SEC conferences.

March Player of the Month – Lebron James, Utah Jazz – 33.3 points, 6.8 rebounds, 4.4 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.1 blocks per game.

March Rookie of the Month – Jim Turner, Phoenix Suns – 12.8 points, 9.9 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.6 steals and 0.3 blocks per game.

With eleven games to go in the season I would be ecstatic if we can get above Denver for that fourth seed, at least we will have the first round home court advantage.

It’s off to a good start with a 110-88 win over San Antonio as Paul George was everywhere with 23 points, 11 rebounds, 6 assists and 6 steals. Dwight Howard was the best for the Spurs with 24 points and 10 rebounds but I have heard that he might not re-sign in San Antonio unless they get some better players.

Memphis Grizzlies 45-27

He won’t go back to the Lakers because they have Ernest Jameson, the next great Lakers centre. Tonight he had 27 points and 15 rebounds but it wasn’t enough as we beat them 98-90 behind Damian Lillard and Chris Bosh who each had 21 points.

Memphis Grizzlies 46-27

The next night we go to Phoenix and beat them up 119-94 as Damian Lillard was everywhere with 25 points and 10 assists. In Chris Bosh’s foul trouble absence Ricardo Marquardt put up 19 points (9/10 FG), 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 blocks in an awesome display. Jared Arenas (Gilbert’s half brother) was the best for the Suns with 19 points off the bench.

Memphis Grizzlies 47-27

Another win over a poor team as we snuff out the Clippers 112-100 as Chris Bosh put up 21 points and 10 rebounds. He had a lot of trouble guarding Blake Griffin who put up 33 points and 8 rebounds, primarily on Bosh.

Memphis Grizzlies 48-27

With that win we are now a whole game in front of Denver but about five days we are playing New Orleans so we have to keep winning to stay in fourth.

We do just that with a 106-92 win over Portland as Chris Bosh scores 24 points on 10 shots (15/20 FT) and 10 rebounds in the win. Paul George had 28 points to lead the way. LaMarcus Aldridge had 20 points and 11 rebounds in the loss while Wesley Fields had 17 points and six turnovers in his return to Memphis.

Memphis Grizzlies 49-27

Kemba Walker was amazing with 41 points and 8 assists as we finally lose a game 122-107 to Orlando. Terrence Williams and JaVale McGee combined for 47 points so those three players scored 88 points in this game. Chris Bosh matched Kemba’s score with 41 points and 8 rebounds of his own but our other players didn’t get close to Williams or McGee.

Memphis Grizzlies 49-28

I thought going back to Memphis would be good for us but we drop a 89-81 game to Golden State which puts us back to fifth. Steph Curry was great with 32 points and 10 assists while ex-Grizz Marc Gasol had 26 points and 13 rebounds. Avery Bradley was our best with 23 points as Travis Ross had 8 blocks and 0 points.

Memphis Grizzlies 49-29

Great, a home and home with New Orleans. The first one is in New Orleans and we get smashed 105-87. Eric Gordon top scored with 29 points and we had nothing. Chris Bosh going 1/12 nothing.

Memphis Grizzlies 49-30

The home at our home was closer as it went into overtime but the result was the same, a 112-101 loss to New Orleans. Eric Gordon was again the leader with 27 points but it was the overtime period that killed us as the Hornets outscored us 13-2.

Memphis Grizzlies 49-31

Argh, I want to win 50 wins but it’s five losses in a row with a 105-99 loss to the 21-60 Mavericks which sucks. Brandon Jennings shows why he was an All Star with 24 points and kept Damian Lillard to only 8 points. Avery Bradley had 21 points to lead us but we only have one more game to get to 50 and that is against the 38-43 Spurs in San Antonio.

Memphis Grizzlies 49-32

Well that sucks. Dwight Howard has 36 points and 14 rebounds as they deny us our 50th win with a 133-95 walloping. I really don’t care about recapping this game as we folded like Superman on laundry day.

Memphis Grizzlies 49-33

With that implosion and a six game losing streak I’m not really looking forward to the playoffs, especially now that we didn’t get home court advantage and so close to coming sixth. We got fifth, equal with Denver for sixth.

2017 NBA Playoffs

Eastern Conference
#1 Cleveland vs. #8 Boston
#2 Detroit vs. #7 Indiana
#3 New York vs. #6 Washington
#4 Charlotte vs. #5 Milwaukee

Western Conference
#1 New Orleans vs. #8 Houston
#2 Utah vs. #7 Denver
#3 Oklahoma City vs. #6 Memphis
#4 Golden State vs. #5 Minnesota

We lost the season series 1-2 against the Thunder and with our current form and not having home court advantage, as well as Kevin Durant’s going into God Mode whenever he plays us I am not confident at all.

Western Conference First Round – Memphis vs. Oklahoma City

Point Guard
Damian Lillard vs. Russell Westbrook
17.8 points, 8.6 assists, 4.4 rebounds vs. 22.4 points, 7.1 assists, 5.3 rebounds

Lillard has taken to his new location like a duck to water and loves leading this team. He will need all his composure to take on Westbrook who has been playing out of his mind lately and will try and continue that form.

Winner – Oklahoma City

Shooting Guard
Avery Bradley vs. George Hill
16.5 points, 1.6 assists, 3.8 rebounds vs. 7.6 points, 3.8 assists, 3.5 rebounds

The battle of the small 2 guards but the one thing that in is Bradley’s favour is that he is used to play SG while Hill is very much out of position. It also helps that Bradley is an outstanding defender and is downright better than Hill.

Winner - Memphis

Small Forward
Paul George vs. Kevin Durant
17.9 points, 3.5 assists, 6.8 rebounds vs. 30.4 points, 1.6 assists, 7.5 rebounds

If it wasn’t for a so called King, Durant would be the outright best player in the league. In the last five years Durant has the top seven scores in a game and nine of the top eleven, led by his 68 points in 2014. Good luck to Paul George.

Winner – Oklahoma City

Power Forward
Chris Bosh vs. Serge Ibaka
17.0 points, 1.7 assists, 8.1 rebounds vs. 12.0 points, 1.4 assists, 10.5 rebounds

Bosh is the Grizzlies best scorer and veteran leader. He needs to fire in this game or else it’s lights out for his team. It won’t be easy because Ibaka is an outstanding defender and probably the best shot blocker in this league outside of Anthony Davis.

Winner - Draw

Centre
Travis Ross vs. Peter Napier
11.9 points, 0.9 assists, 6.0 rebounds vs. 8.6 points, 0.9 assists, 6.5 rebounds

It’s the battle of the two rookies and this draft class is an amazing crop for big men. It’s also the battle of opposites as Ross is a great offensive player while Napier is already a fantastic defender and will work well with Ibaka in closing down the paint.

Winner – Memphis (by a hair)

Bench
Ricardo Marquardt, Mike Conley, Brandon Rush vs. Rodney Stuckey, Tyler Hansbrough, DJ Augustin

Stuckey is the only Thunder player that plays substantial minutes off the bench which could be the Achilles heel for the favourites if their starters get into foul trouble. Marquardt has been a fantastic addition to the Memphis team and will slide in nicely if Ross becomes troubled.

Winner – Memphis

Prediction – Oklahoma City in five. The Thunder just have too much firepower in their starting line-up for the Grizzlies to hassle them too much.

Like an actor on cue, Kevin Durant opens up a can of you know what in their demoralising 106-86 win. KD put up 46 points and 12 rebounds and also held Paul George to 6/20 from the field. Not only did we get smashed our one ace in Ricardo Marquardt has gone down with a heavily sprained wrist. Avery Bradley was our best with 22 points.

Oklahoma City leads 1-0

It was little used CJ Miles who got into the team, telling us to have some pride in this team and your other players and it work. We got to a little lead before the Thunder forced overtime. After five minutes it was still locked and another extra period was needed. We ran out of steam unfortunately, going down 111-105 in a message to the Thunder that we won’t roll over. Kevin Durant still put up 37 points but he shot 12/30 from the field as we hounded them all game. Russell Westbrook had 25 points and 11 rebounds while Peter Napier demolished Travis Ross with 22 points while holding Ross to 1/10 shooting. Paul George was our best with 28 points while Mike Conley was amazing in the first overtime, scoring eight of his twelve points in the term.

Oklahoma City leads 2-0

Going back home felt like we could do anything but feelings don’t equate to wins as the Thunder got out to a 28-11 first quarter lead to win the game 99-86 to put us on the brink of elimination. If I said Kevin Durant scored 15 points in the win you would tell me I’m daft but Russell Westbrook took up the slack with 41 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists in the win. Damian Lillard tried to match him with 21 points but was left in Westbrook’s wake.

Oklahoma City leads 3-0

I would be happy with at least one win to avoid the sweep. But what do we do? Get smashed, that’s what. We never led in the game as the Thunder moved on with a 113-98 win as Durant finds his groove again with 34 points. We had six players in double figures but when we get smashed by that much on our own court no-one should get a mention.

Oklahoma City wins 4-0

At least we weren’t the only sweep, with New York taking the brooms to Washington.

Eastern Conference First Round
#1 Cleveland beat #8 Boston 4-3
#2 Detroit beat #7 Indiana 4-3
#3 New York beat #6 Washington 4-0
#4 Charlotte beat #5 Milwaukee 4-2

Western Conference First Round
#1 New Orleans beat #8 Houston 4-1
#2 Utah beat #7 Denver 4-1
#3 Oklahoma City beat #6 Memphis 4-0
#4 Golden State beat #5 Minnesota 4-3

Eastern Conference Semi Finals
#4 Charlotte beat #1 Cleveland 4-2
#3 New York beat #2 Detroit 4-0

Western Conference Semi Finals
#1 New Orleans beat #4 Golden State 4-1
#2 Utah beat #4 Oklahoma City 4-2

Eastern Conference Finals
#4 Charlotte beat #3 New York 4-3

Western Conference Finals
#2 Utah beat #1 New Orleans 4-3

2017 NBA Finals – Charlotte vs. Utah

Point Guard
Ty Lawson vs. Michael Fisher
18.8 points, 6.4 assists, 5.8 rebounds vs. 11.4 points, 8.2 assists, 4.0 rebounds

Lawson has the obvious talent advantage but the biggest killer for Fisher is that he is a horrendous defender and with the offensively geared Lawson at the helm the young Jazz PG is going to have a long series.

Winner - Charlotte

Shooting Guard
Klay Thompson vs. Raul Riviera
17.7 points, 4.4 assists, 5.0 rebounds vs. 4.8 points, 2.1 assists, 1.1 rebounds

Usual starting SG Danny Green is out with a strained abdominal for about three games so they throw raw PG Riviera at the SG, which is pretty much throwing him to the wolves. Thompson has also been hampered by injuries but he will destroy Riviera in the first couple of games.

Winner - Charlotte

Small Forward
Michael Kidd-Gilchrist vs. Lebron James
14.6 points, 5.3 assists, 7.5 rebounds vs. 26.2 points, 5.9 assists, 5.3 rebounds

The six time league MVP James shocked the world when he decided to go to Utah of all places to try for another ring. It has seemed to work and will be the focal point of this Jazz team until he retires it seems. MKG is a great defender but LBJ is just in another stratosphere.

Winner - Utah

Power Forward
Dennis Freymond vs. Derrick Favors
12.7 points, 1.3 assists, 10.7 rebounds vs. 19.2 points, 1.4 assists, 13.4 rebounds

Dennis Freymond has been a great player ever since he came into this league but Favors is as good as any other PF not named Kevin Love, with Anthony Davis included. He has also been playing out of his mind in these playoffs and should neutralised Freymond here. If anyone is wondering, Freymond still hasn’t blocked a shot yet.

Winner - Utah

Centre
Al Jefferson vs. Mark Lewis
16.4 points, 2.2 assists, 8.8 rebounds vs. 12.1 points, 1.2 assists, 7.6 rebounds

The newest number one draft pick, Lewis has oodles of potential but at the moment is just running on physical talent at the moment. Bad news because Big Al eats up raw big men like it’s breakfast with his crafty post moves.

Winner - Charlotte

Bench
Tiago Splitter, Alfred Abney, Lavoy Allen vs. DeJuan Blair, Lynn McMillian, JR Smith

Very, very similar benches with Splitter and Blair being the same, Abney and Smith being the same and Allen and McMillian are being the same. Whichever bench can lift may win the championship for their team.

Winner – Draw

Prediction – Utah in six. James and Favors are going to be too much for this Bobcats team, especially with Thompson being injured.

Game One
Charlotte 92, Utah 87 (CHA 1-0)
Player of the Game – Ty Lawson – 19 points, 14 assists, 5 rebounds

Game Two
Charlotte 97, Utah 92 (CHA 2-0)
Player of the Game – Al Jefferson – 23 points, 13 rebounds

Game Three
Utah 110, Charlotte 113 (CHA 3-0)
Player of the Game – Klay Thompson – 32 points, 5 assists

Game Four
Utah 83, Charlotte 102 (CHA 4-0)
Player of the Game – Klay Thompson – 24 points, 4 assists, 4 rebounds

What? How is that even possible? I have no idea how the Bobcats swept the Jazz but it just happened. Congratulations to the Charlotte Bobcats on their first ever championship, it look them 13 years to get one and I’m sure that people of North Carolina will be celebrating this for the next 13 years.

Moving on from that ridiculous outcome of the NBA Championship it’s time for the lottery but I’m not really interested because we don’t have a draft pick this year because I traded it in a previous trade.

14th – Philadelphia (0)
13th – Dallas (0)
12th – Philadelphia (0)
11th – Sacramento (0)
10th – Chicago (0)
9th – Brooklyn (-1)

Wow Orlando have jumped! They have only a 3.4% chance of winning the lottery.

8th – Portland (-1)
7th – LA Clippers (-1)
6th – LA Lakers (-1)
5th – Dallas (-2)

Phoenix have also jumped, but they have better odds than the Magic (9.8%).

4th – Miami (-3)

Holy moly, this draft has gone from interesting to OH WOW WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON WITH ALL OF THESE TEAMS JUMPING!

3rd – Atlanta (+1)
2nd – Phoenix (+2)
1st – Orlando (+8)

The end of the season started strangely with Charlotte sweeping and now Orlando taking their 3.4% chance to win the lottery all the way to the bank. What else does this off season hold?

It’s awards time and I would love to see either Damian Lillard (unlikely) or Paul George (maybe) sneak into an All NBA team.

Most Valuable Player:
Lebron James, Utah Jazz – 28.8 points, 5.5 assists, 5.9 rebounds, 1.7 steals, 0.8 blocks

Well played by the King as I can’t see anyone else taking this award away from him any time soon.

Defensive Player of the Year:
Anthony Davis, New Orleans Hornets – 19.3 points, 1.6 assists, 10.2 rebounds, 2.3 steals, 3.8 blocks

He really is the whole defensive package and has taken over from Dwight Howard as the premier defender in the league.

Sixth Man of the Year:
Andre Iguodala, New York Knicks – 11.3 points, 4.8 assists, 4.4 rebounds, 1.4 steals, 0.3 blocks

It’s great to see him win an award but the team would be so much better if he started.

Rookie of the Year:
Mark Hill, Atlanta Hawks – 13.6 points, 0.9 assists, 5.7 rebounds, 0.7 steals, 0.9 blocks

A worthy winner. Even in my biased state I still think he was better than Travis Ross this year.

Coach of the Year:
Mike Woodson, New York Knicks – 57-25 (.695)

As much as it’s great to see him win I reckon the coaches from Utah (Nate McMillan) or New Orleans (Jeff Van Gundy) should have won.

All NBA First Team:
Kyrie Irving, Cleveland Cavaliers
James Harden, Houston Rockets
Lebron James, Utah Jazz
Anthony Davis, New Orleans Hornets
Ernest Jameson, Los Angeles Lakers

All NBA Second Team:
Steph Curry, Golden State Warriors
Bradley Beal, Washington Wizards
Kevin Durant, Oklahoma City Thunder
Kenneth Faried, Denver Nuggets
Andrew Bynum, Cleveland Cavaliers

All NBA Third Team:
Chris Paul, New York Knicks
Klay Thompson, Charlotte Bobcats
Paul George, Memphis Grizzlies
Kevin Love, Minnesota Timberwolves
Joakim Noah, Chicago Bulls

This just shows the dominance of the Western Conferece as nine of the fifteen players named here are from the West, with three of the six East players coming the in the Third team.

All Defence First Team:
Lewis Vines, New Orleans Hornets
Iman Shumpert, Milwaukee Bucks
Paul George, Memphis Grizzlies
Anthony Davis, New Orleans Hornets
Andre Drummond, Detroit Pistons

All Defence Second Team:
Jeremy Lin, Toronto Raptors
Dion Waiters, Los Angeles Clippers
Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Charlotte Bobcats
Kenneth Faried, Denver Nuggets
Marc Gasol, Golden State Warriors

All Rookie First Team:
Trello Price, Minnesota Timberwolves
Bernard Belton, Detroit Pistons
Jim Turner, Phoenix Suns
Jared Arenas, Phoenix Suns
Mark Hill, Atlanta Hawks

All Rookie Second Team:
Marco Barker, Cleveland Cavaliers
Donte Tolliver, Toronto Raptors
Christopher de Castro, Los Angeles Clippers
Dwayne Knight, Milwaukee Bucks
Travis Ross, Memphis Grizzlies

The phone call with Mike Hershey was pretty simple, he was happy enough with the team and how we went last season which is good. He also tells me that I need to be a little tighter with the cash than last season which is a jib. If he wants playoffs then it needs to be more than ‘just right around the cap’. We’ll see what I can, but don’t expect me to be trying very hard.

The mock draft comes out like it always does and this draft is a bit of a snooze. There isn’t any real five star prospect here with a lot of solid guys but not even some All Stars it seems.

1 – Orlando – SG Alexander Verhaeren
2 – Phoenix – SG Earl Oliver
3 – Atlanta – SF Marcello Locatelli
4 – Miami – PG Bret Davis
5 – Dallas – PF Casey Floyd
6 – LA Lakers – SG Brian Simmons
7 – LA Clippers – C Jeff Cunningham
8 – Portland – PG Li-chi King
9 – Brooklyn – C LeRoy Jones
10 – Chicago – SF William Jones
11 – Sacramento – SF Lorec Balosak
12 – Philadelphia – SG Billy Huld
13 – Dallas – SG Steve Anderson
14 – Philadelphia – PF Bernard Neal

Casey Floyd has come out of nowhere but is definitely a top five player at the moment. Lorec Balosak should not go #11 and could go as high as #6 to the Lakers.

2017 NBA Draft

1 – Orlando – PF Casey Floyd
What! I can’t believe that this bolter made it all the way to number one. Sure he’s good but I would have picked Verhaeren first.

I hit the trade lines to see what I can get. I find a trade that may alienate a lot of our fanbase but it’s what I think we needed.

Memphis trade:
PG Damian Lillard
SF CJ Miles
2019 2nd round pick

Minnesota trade:
PG Ricky Rubio
2018 1st round pick

Winner – Draw. Both teams get an elite PG while the first rounder won’t be until late next year.

I’m happy with this trade because I love having pass first PGs on my team. We went well with Chris Paul and now we have Ricky Rubio. I’m not a huge fan of having our PG do most of the scoring, and an added bonus is that Rubio is a great defender as well.

2 – Phoenix – SG Alexander Verhaeren
Great pick here by the Suns as it was the right one. Still a little raw but can be an All Star SG in the future.

I try and trade for Josh Smith but the Hawks are waaaaaaaaaay overvaluing him so I sit tight for a bit.

3 – Atlanta – PG Bret Davis
The more I look at this kid the better he seems. He isn’t the best shooter from deep but his slashing and court vision is very, very good.

4 – Miami – SF Marcello Locatelli
Another good pick here, his defence is already outstanding. The Heat will look to build around him for the future.

5 – Dallas – SF Lorec Balosak
I said as high as #6 but the Mavs take him higher than that. Still raw but can be an great player in the future. I don’t mind him here.

I badger the Suns and I finally get him.

Memphis trade:
PF Chris Bosh
SF Kent Harris
PG Ernest Davis
2018 1st round pick (MIN)

Phoenix trade:
PF Josh Smith

Winner – Phoenix. Although Smith is better than Bosh, Harris and Davis are good, young bench guys to have on a team.

Whatever. I’m going to be sad to see Harris go but Davis has been a thorn in my side ever since he came to this team so no tears will be shed for Ernest Davis. What this means is that my starting five (apart from Travis Ross) are very good defenders which I love. Try and score against us now NBA.

6 – LA Lakers – C Jeff Cunningham
Falls out of the top five because of his size. He is 6’9”, 281lbs and needs to lose a bit of weight because he gets into trouble with conditioning. Still, at #6 to get someone of his talents is a bargain.

7 – LA Clippers – SF William Jones
A turnover machine but his effort and rebounding makes him a top 10 pick. Needs to work on his game to truly be a part of the rotation.

8 – Portland – SG Earl Oliver
I’m not quite sure why Oliver dropped as he was slated as a guaranteed top five player throughout the season. Reports are that he tries to do too much all the time which makes him pick up cheap fouls and turnovers.

9 – Brooklyn – C LeRoy Jones
Good passer and shot blocker with some decent post moves, Jones could easily become a top 10 centre in the league if he works on it. His shot selection is poor at the moment (probably because he was the only decent player of Morehead State this year) and work on his free throws.

10 – Chicago – PF Boris Lagumdzija
He is a good outside shooter and a decent defender but reports coming in are saying that he has a terrible attitude and will not listen. Chicago are going to have a very hard time reeling Boris in and seems like a wasted lottery pick.

11 – Sacramento – SF Raz Lip****z
Very smart basketball player that is sneaky athletic. Doesn’t help that he has no basketball skills to back that IQ up. He is not a good defender and turns the ball over too much because he just doesn’t have the skills to keep up with professional basketballers.

12 – Philadelphia – PF Beau Henry
This draft has suddenly fallen off a cliff with recent picks as that is three shockers in a row. In any other draft there is no way that Henry even sniffs the lottery.

13 – Dallas – PG Nathan Howard
Stick thin (6’4”, 166lbs) who is only just ‘meh’. Make that four from four terrible picks and I’m glad I traded out of this draft.

14 – Philadelphia – SG Desmond Morgan
With a guy like Billy Huld still available the Sixers make another blunder. I’m so glad that it’s the end of the lottery as I’m running out of ways of saying that the pick is a wasted one.

15 – Boston – SG Brian Simmons
16 – Houston – C Damon McMaster
17 – Indiana – PG Matt Jones
18 – Washington – SG Steve Anderson
19 – Milwaukee – SG Darryl Iacona
20 – Golden State – SG Billy Huld

He finally goes at #20.

21 – Denver – C Jerrance Hicks
22 – Boston – SF David Forney
23 – Toronto – C Victor Jones
24 – Charlotte – PF Bernard Neal
25 – Oklahoma City – SF John Bragg
26 – New York – SG Tom Kickert
27 – Detroit – PG Marcus Collins
28 – Cleveland – PG Li-chi King

Slotted at #8 on the mock draft, it’s a bit of a fall down to #28.

29 – Philadelphia – SF Greg Venner
30 – New Orleans – PF Bektas Baykurt

As usual we don’t have any second round picks so I’ll go over the draft day trades.

Indiana trade:
SF Danny Granger

Detroit trade:
PF Pau Gasol
2017 2nd round pick

Winner – Detroit. Getting rid of Gasol off the bench was great for the Pistons and getting someone who will take to being a bench player and excel at it is even better. At 36 years old, Gasol is nothing but an expiring contract for the Pacers.

Chicago trade:
SF Luol Deng

Philadelphia trade:
C Emeka Okafor
2017 2nd round pick

Winner – Philadelphia. Simply put, both are expiring contracts while Deng is a better player.

LA Clippers trade:
PG Charles Canady

New Orleans trade:
SF Corry Hackworth
2017 2nd round pick

Winner – New Orleans. Even though Hackworth has become a better player than most people gave him credit for, Canady is a great PG. Does this mean that Lewis Vines isn’t coming back to the Hornets?

Orlando trade:
C JaVale McGee

Detroit trade:
SF Tobias Harris

Winner – Detroit. The Pistons got another great bench piece while the Magic don’t know what they’re doing. Strange trade by the Magic.

Dallas trade:
C Spencer Hawes

Portland trade:
SF Nicolas Batum
2017 2nd round pick

Winner – Dallas. Wow. This trade is so lopsided. It’s not even like the Blazers got an expiring contract as Hawes still has two years left on his deal.

Charlotte trade:
C Tiago Splitter

New Orleans trade:
PG Ramon Sessions
2017 2nd round pick

Winner – New Orleans (just). Sure Splitter is a better play but he has been a little grumpy about playing time so getting rid of him for a large expiring contract is a plus for the Bobcats.

New Orleans trade:
C Enes Kanter

LA Clippers trade:
PF Hayletts Smith

Winner – Clippers. A straight up trade where one player is better than the other. Another slap in the face for the Hornets is that Kanter and Anthony Davis seemed to have real chemistry together and will be hard to replicate with Tiago Splitter.

Charlotte trade:
SG Alfred Abney
2017 2nd round pick

Orlando trade:
PF Bill Mallet

Winner – Orlando. Abney has loads of talent but it wasting away at Charlotte. He gets to spread his wings in Orlando and it’s not out of the question that he could average 20ppg with this team.

Phew, that’s a lot of trades.
