New York, New York! Bringing a championship home

2018 NBA Playoffs

Eastern Conference
#1 Detroit vs. #8 Orlando
#2 Cleveland vs. #7 Washington
#3 New York vs. #6 Milwaukee
#4 Charlotte vs. #5 Toronto

Western Conference
#1 Utah vs. #8 Golden State
#2 New Orleans vs. #7 Minnesota
#3 Oklahoma City vs. #6 San Antonio
#4 Sacramento vs. #5 Memphis

Because the Kings were the top of their division they get the fourth seed, but we still have home court advantage.

We won the season series 2-1 with that loss happening at the start of the season when we didn’t have this current squad.

Western Conference First Round – Memphis vs. Sacramento

Point Guard
John Wall vs. Joe Holmes
14.6 points, 9.8 assists, 4.6 rebounds vs. 13.6 points, 5.5 assists, 4.2 rebounds

Joe Holmes is not a PG and shouldn’t be starting here but we all have things we want to change. John Wall will run rings around him and expect to see double digit assist numbers for the Memphis general.

Winner - Memphis

Shooting Guard
Paul George vs. Marcus Thornton
19.8 points, 3.9 assists, 7.1 rebounds vs. 20.1 points, 1.9 assists, 3.6 rebounds

On the surface this match up looks very close but look deeper and cracks start to appear. For one, Thornton is only 6’4” compared to George being 6’9”. Also George is a fantastic defender while Thornton is below average. He will still get his numbers but George should take him out of the series.

Winner - Memphis

Small Forward
Antoine Martin vs. Terrence Ross
16.2 points, 1.5 assists, 4.3 rebounds vs. 10.7 points, 3.5 assists, 3.8 rebounds

A mid season addition, Martin has been excellent as a secondary player. If the team’s stars are in trouble look for Martin to have a big game. Ross is a jack of all trades and could hinder Martin as he is a decent defender.

Winner - Memphis

Power Forward
Kenneth Faried vs. Thomas Robinson
14.2 points, 1.6 assists, 8.9 rebounds vs. 12.9 points, 1.6 assists, 7.3 rebounds

Faried is still banged up which will help out Robinson in this series. The King is a great scorer and rebounder and is two inches taller than Faried. Add in Faried’s series long injury and this match up is very, very close.

Winner - Draw

Centre
Ernest Jameson vs. DeMarcus Cousins
12.5 points, 1.4 assists, 8.1 rebounds vs. 21.3 points, 1.5 assists, 10.2 rebounds

The shining light for the Kings. Cousins is a bonafide superstar in this league, being one of only five players averaging 20 points and 10 rebounds a game on the season (Favors, Howard, Love and Griffin the other four). Jameson isn’t a very good defender either so Cousins could blow this series up in favour of Sacramento. If they go down early look for Cousins to quit on his team.

Winner - Sacramento

Bench
Nikola Vucevic, Mike Lloyd, Ricardo Marquardt vs. Bismack Biyombo, Isaiah Thomas, Jimmer Fredette

Even though the Grizzlies have a deeper bench the Kings have a better top. Biyombo should be starting in this league and Thomas should be leading a fringe playoff team as well.

Winner – Draw

Prediction – Memphis in five.

Even though we are the fifth seed we had a better record than the Kings and so we have home court advantage throughout this series so let’s put it to good use. In game one Antoine Martin explodes for 35 points and 10 rebounds in a huge statement. Paul George had 22 points, 11 rebounds, 7 assists and 5 steals as well as we win comfortably 103-85. Oh, I forgot about John Wall’s 14 points, 12 assists and 9 rebounds. It must be a good day if a near triple double only gets third on the bill. DeMarcus Cousins was frustrated all night with 15 points and 10 rebounds but shot 4/14 from the field before fouling out in only 31 minutes. Marcus Thornton top scored with 22 points on 21 shots. So far so good.

Memphis leads 1-0

Speaking of triple doubles, Anthony Davis had 17 points, 10 rebounds and 10 blocks in the Hornets’ 110-95 win over Minnesota and didn’t get the Player of the Game award, which went to Tiago Splitter’s 27 points and 14 rebounds.

Game two was similar for DeMarcus Cousins, going 4/14 from the field again. However, he went 12/20 from the foul line for 20 points while Joe Holmes may not be a point guard but he sure knows how to fill up the cup with 29 points and 12 assists (and seven turnovers). This sounds pretty grim for us, right? Well it was, as we went down 122-117 in double overtime. Even though the game went into double overtime it really didn’t feel like our game to win as they had most of the run. John Wall had 23 points and 10 assists to pace us but Antoine Martin, Paul George and Mike Lloyd all fouled out.

Series tied 1-1

Travelling into California I had a sinking feeling that we wouldn’t win either game away from home and that feeling was right, until halfway through the third term. For starters we outscored the Kings by seven in the last four minutes of the third and then went into God Mode, beating them 44-28 in the last to take back home court advantage with a 121-93 win. Paul George was our best with 18 points, 11 rebounds and 7 assists while Antoine Martin stepped up again with 24 points. Thomas Robinson shot terribly for 24 points and 8 rebounds as the Kings shot 36% to our mind bending 60% from the field.

Memphis leads 2-1

Finally! This is the DeMarcus Cousins I have heard all about! The big centre went ballistic with 41 points, 8 rebounds and 5 blocks with Joe Holmes dishing out 12 assists. Still didn’t give them a win though, as we again ride a stupidly good last quarter (35-15) to take them to the brink with a 115-105 win. John Wall was everywhere with 25 points, 9 assists, 5 rebounds and 3 blocks with Antoine Martin really showing me his grit with 28 points. Mike Lloyd took 10 shots in only 15 minutes off the bench, luckily for him he had 15 points for them. One more win!

Memphis leads 3-1

There was one sweep with #3 Oklahoma City bringing out the brooms against #6 San Antonio and I don’t think Dwight Howard is very happy at the moment.

I’ll say this straight away, we lost the fourth quarter 31-27. It didn’t matter as we had a very comfortable 20 point lead as we take the series 98-89 as Paul George led the way with 21 points. Even though Ernest Jameson has been nullified on the offensive end he has kept DeMarcus Cousins to poor shooting, this time going 2/8 for only 14 points. Marcus Thornton had 27 shots to get his 27 points.

Memphis wins series 4-1

#1 Detroit, #3 New York and #2 Cleveland all took their series 4-1 and surprisingly there is still three series going on, with all three going the distance. The favourites all won their respective games with #4 Charlotte, #1 Utah and #2 New Orleans winning their game sevens. Anthony Davis had a game seven for the history books with 20 points, 10 rebounds and an otherworldly 17 blocks, tying the most blocks in a game EVER. He had the most blocks in a game (tied), ever, in a game seven. Talk about clutch.

Up next – The currently fragile Utah Jazz.

2018 NBA Playoffs

Eastern Conference
#1 Detroit vs. #4 Charlotte
#2 Cleveland vs. #3 New York

Western Conference
#1 Utah vs. #5 Memphis
#2 New Orleans vs. #3 Oklahoma City

Unfortunately we lost the season series pretty badly 3-1. I’m hoping that the Jazz are second guessing themselves after going to seven games last series.

Western Conference Semi Final – Memphis vs. Utah

Point Guard
John Wall vs. Michael Fisher
19.0 points, 8.8 assists, 5.6 rebounds vs. 7.7 points, 7.6 assists, 4.3 rebounds

With the emergence of Antoine Martin as the go to scorer, John Wall was pushed back a little. Not this round, as Fisher is a very average player and worst of all, one of the worst defenders in the league. Looks for a massive series by Wall.

Winner - Memphis

Shooting Guard
Paul George vs. Danny Green
19.8 points, 5.2 assists, 8.8 rebounds vs. 15.0 points, 1.9 assists, 3.7 rebounds

Averaging nearly nine rebounds a game for a shooting guard is unheard of but it isn’t an anomaly. George is the team’s best player and will need to step up again for this team to have a chance to win. Green is a decent defender but is still three inches shorter than George.

Winner - Memphis

Small Forward
Antoine Martin vs. Lebron James
23.4 points, 2.0 assists, 7.0 rebounds vs. 28.6 points, 4.6 assists, 7.6 rebounds

During the season LBJ was known to give his younger players a chance to shine but come playoff time he has demanded the ball. He is currently shooting at 59% from the field and 46% from three. Martin needs to slow him down for the Grizzlies to have a chance.

Winner - Utah

Power Forward
Kenneth Faried vs. Derrick Favors
11.0 points, 1.2 assists, 6.8 rebounds vs. 21.7 points, 2.3 assists, 11.3 rebounds

Adding to those numbers Favors is averaging 2.4 steals and 3.4 blocks in the previous series and you have an all around monster. Faried had a very poor series last time and will have a chip on his shoulder to redeem himself. This will be a very good matchup to watch.

Winner – Utah (just)

Centre
Ernest Jameson vs. Mark Lewis
8.8 points, 1.4 assists, 6.2 rebounds vs. 15.3 points, 0.7 assists, 7.1 rebounds

Lewis is only 20 years old and it seems that the big lights of playoff basketball is knocking him around, only shooting 40% from the field and 43% from the line and averaging four fouls a game. This could work in favour of Jameson who needs a big series to not only help his team but help his chances of being on this team next season, as he has been a massive disappointment so far.

Winner - Draw

Bench
Nikola Vucevic, Mike Lloyd, Ricardo Marquardt vs. Lynn McMillian, Cederic Mapp, Myron Nee

McMillian has been good off the bench but again he is a poor defender while Mapp and Nee are just average. Another area that the Grizzlies could get the upper hand on this massive task.

Winner – Memphis

Prediction – Utah in six.

I admit, the odds are all in Utah’s camp. Winning two games is the goal at the moment but I really didn’t notice how bad their backcourt is compared to ours. If Wall and George can fire then anything could happen.

Urgh. I may have got a little ahead of myself in that previous statement. All of our energy was sapped after the Jazz beat us 38-18 in the first quarter as they went on to humiliate us 125-97. Derrick Favors (37 points, 9 rebounds), Lebron James (28 points, 11 assists, 9 rebounds) and Mark Lewis (18 points, 12 rebounds) combined for a whopping 83 points and 30 rebounds in the win as they really didn’t need anything else. Michael Fisher dished out 15 assists to primarily those guys. John Wall was our best with 23 points and 9 assists but Antoine Martin was kept to only 8 points.

Utah leads 1-0

James, Favors and Lewis combined for 62 points and 34 rebounds but the Jazz only shot 41% for the game and through three quarters the game was tied. Paul George stood up with 22 points but they again too out the win with a 34-23 final term to take a two game lead 108-97. John Wall was hounded all game, going 6/21 from the field for 13 points and 9 assists as Kenneth Faried and Ernest Jameson combined for a woeful 18 points. We have always been good at home so hopefully we can resurrect this corpse.

Utah leads 2-0

Home cooking, we need you. During the season we were fantastic at 36-5 so this is what we need to get back on track. Let’s run through some stats: Lebron James 18 points on 6/11 shooting, Derrick Favors 8 points, 12 rebounds and 6 turnovers on 3/15 shooting and Mark Lewis fouling out in 19 minutes after scoring 19 points and shooting 3/14 from the foul line. Pretty good, right? Yep, as we get out of a 32 point lead to get a game back 103-84. Kenneth Faried woke up with 15 points, 12 rebounds, 5 blocks and 5 steals as John Wall scored 25 points. Nikola Vucevic took over for Ernest Jameson who fouled out in 23 minutes with 8 points and 7 rebounds. Alright, we are off the goose egg and on our way.

Utah leads 2-1

The Memphis crowd is electric after winning the previous game and it rubbed off onto the players. Mark Lewis was about three foot tall all game, going 5/20 from the field and a terribly 3/19 from the foul line for 13 points and 15 rebounds and James and Favors combined for only 31 points and 19 rebounds as we tie the series 94-79. Kenneth Faried’s chip is getting bigger and bigger with 23 points and 11 rebounds and Antoine Martin gets out from LBJ with 21 points. If we can steal one game in Utah then I’m sure we can take this series at home but it really isn’t that easy, is it?

Series tied 2-2

#1 Detroit swept the Bobcats 4-0 and honestly, none of the games were close.

I have never seen a player shoot free throws worse than Mark Lewis. In game five, he went 10/23 to bring his playoff total to 45/129 or 34.9%. He also had 11 turnovers to go with his 20 points and 9 rebounds. Derrick Favors also had a terrible game with 10 points (3/16 FG) and 12 rebounds as we held a 67-58 three quarter time lead and I had a great feeling about it. Unfortunately we forgot about the best third of that team, Lebron James, as he single handedly beat us in the final term 36-21 to win 94-88. LBJ had 26 points but his free throws in the final term killed us, going 10/11 from the line in the fourth. Mike Lloyd had 20 points off the bench after Antoine Martin fouled out. Actually, not only Martin but Kenneth Faried, Ernest Jameson and Nikola Vucevic fouled out in another one sided foul count.
Utah leads 3-2

The Jazz shot 38/56 from the foul line compared to our 16/21 and I don’t care if I get fined again, THIS IS NOT ON. How can we foul a team 17 times more than they foul us! Unbelievable, I know James is the golden child of the NBA but this is stupidly biased and in no way subtle. Lift your game, league.

#3 Oklahoma City has moved on to the next round with a 4-1 series win over #2 New Orleans.

I have just got the news that because of my outburst against the league I have been banned from attending game six which is a crock. So I will be outside the arena handing out free blankets to the many thousands of supporters who could not nab a ticket. My son will be going to the game with my ticket.

Hey Ernest Jameson, where have you been? Our big man goes 11/14 from the field for 23 points (before fouling out naturally) as we take the series to a game seven with a 111-101 win! John Wall was our best with 26 points and 10 assists while Antoine Martin had 21 points of his own. Derrick Favors has another bad shooting night, going 8/20 for 21 points and 10 rebounds while LBJ had 25 points and nothing else. Yay, I get to see another game!

Series tied 3-3

The New York/Cleveland series has also gone to a game seven which is exciting.

All of the games in this series has been won by the home team and I would really love it if that trend would happen tonight. First up the Mark Lewis foul shooting count, 4/14, with 20 points and 16 rebounds. Lebron James had 21 points and 7 assists while Michael Fisher did something with 13 points and 8 assists. That didn’t matter as Derrick Favors had another shocker (4/11 FG) as we win the game 103-94 and move on to the next round! What an amazing display of courage under pressure as the Jazz roared back from 24 points down to get back under double digits but we held our nerve. John Wall had the game we all knew he could have with 28 points and 11 assists while Paul George helped him out with 24 points and 13 rebounds. Ernest Jameson fouled out again but that doesn’t matter, we won!

Memphis wins series 4-3

Oh my God this feels so good beating the massive favourites but I really hope we don't deflate in the next round because we got too pumped up after winning this. The goal isn't over yet.

In the NYK/CLE series Andrew Bynum had 22 points as the Cavs outscored the Knicks 26-16 in the final term to win 96-86 to move onto the next round.

Up next – Our biggest bogey team, the Oklahoma City Thunder.

2018 NBA Playoffs

Eastern Conference
#1 Detroit vs. #2 Cleveland

Western Conference
#3 Oklahoma City vs. #5 Memphis

The Thunder really are our bogey team as we just can’t stop Kevin Durant. We lost the season series 3-1 but that didn’t stop us beating Utah (stop getting ahead of yourself).

Western Conference Finals – Memphis vs. Oklahoma City

Point Guard
John Wall vs. Russell Westbrook
19.6 points, 8.4 assists, 4.8 rebounds vs. 21.3 points, 8.4 assists, 7.7 rebounds

Westbrook has been amazing this playoff campaign, nearly averaging a triple double. Couple that with is excellent defence and Wall is going to have a hard time. Wall shot badly going against the poor defender in Michael Fisher last series so don’t expect much from him here.

Winner – Oklahoma City

Shooting Guard
Paul George vs. George Hill
17.3 points, 5.3 assists, 8.1 rebounds vs. 2.2 points, 0.7 assists, 1.1 rebounds

Not their usual starter (DJ Augustin starts at SG) Hill is going to STRUGGLE here. Not only is he a whopping seven inches shorter than George and the Memphis star has been tearing it up this year. The Grizzlies are the underdogs here and will need George to have a huge series to win it.

Winner - Memphis

Small Forward
Antoine Martin vs. Kevin Durant
18.9 points, 1.4 assists, 5.8 rebounds vs. 30.8 points, 0.8 assists, 8.8 rebounds

A perennial MVP candidate Kevin Durant is a scoring machine. Durant is only 28 years old and already 16th on the all time leaderboard for scoring. His rebounding has improved as well. Martin has been the go to scorer for the Grizzlies these playoffs but he will have to change up his game and do all he can to slow down KD.

Winner – Oklahoma City

Power Forward
Kenneth Faried vs. Serge Ibaka
13.1 points, 1.4 assists, 9.2 rebounds vs. 13.7 points, 0.9 assists, 10.3 rebounds

The battle of the scrappers as both these guys love to do the dirty work and they do it well. Faried can score in bunches while Ibaka doesn’t have that ability but he is a better defender and shot blocker. Great match up here.

Winner - Draw

Centre
Ernest Jameson vs. Peter Napier
10.0 points, 1.3 assists, 6.0 rebounds vs. 10.0 points, 1.0 assist, 7.0 rebounds

With all the scoring around with Westbrook and Durant there isn’t much for Peter Napier so he has become an amazing defender. He will need all the skills he has because even though Jameson has been a disappointment he can still put up points in a hurry.

Winner - Draw

Bench
Nikola Vucevic, Mike Lloyd, Ricardo Marquardt vs. Gustavo Ayon, Rasheed Miller, John Bragg

The Thunder rely on their starters with only Ayon and Miller playing more than 10 minutes a game off the bench. That could come back and bite them if their stars get into foul trouble.

Winner – Memphis

Prediction – Oklahoma City in six.

We got swept by the Thunder last season and they seem to be our bogey team so I’m not very confident at the moment. Our home record has been outstanding so I guess we can always fall back on that if we don’t start very well.

The Oklahoma City crowd seem to be even more rambunctious than usual, I think because they know we are a threat after taking down the great Utah Jazz. Kevin Durant gets his with 33 points while Russell Westbrook tears John Wall apart with 25 points and 9 assists while fouling out Wall in only 16 minutes. He also fouled out back up Mike Lloyd in only 22 minutes and shot 15/19 from the foul line. All of this equated to a 99-89 Thunder win to take first blood. Paul George tried his hardest with 19 points and 9 assists while Ernest Jameson had 12 points and 11 rebounds. It was a good start but not good enough.

Oklahoma City leads 1-0

Urgh, even though Kevin Durant only had 14 points we got into a 51-35 hole at half time before getting blown out 106-82 to go down 2-0. Peter Napier had the best of Ernest with 19 points and 8 rebounds while Gustavo Ayon put up 15 points in only 21 minutes off the bench. And Serge Ibaka did what he usually does with 14 rebounds and 7 blocks. Kenneth Faried went 4/22 from the field for 15 points and 17 rebounds and we shot 34% from the field. How embarrassing and now we have to pin everything on our stellar home record.

Oklahoma City leads 2-0

Ahh, that is much better. The Thunder never led in our 100-81 win and I don’t know how we do it at home. Paul George had 21 points and 9 rebounds while Mike Lloyd was perfect, going 4/4 from three for 12 points and 4 assists in only 17 minutes off the bench. Russell Westbrook had 29 points but Kevin Durant was held to 12 points on 4/19 shooting.

Oklahoma City leads 2-1

Before the game Kevin Durant told reporters that his 12 point outing last game was one of the worst games he has ever played and he guaranteed that he would do better in game four. Boy was he right. The Thunder got out to a 33-13 first quarter lead and at half time that was stretched to 59-29, all but destroying our chances as they took a commanding 3-1 lead with a 105-87 win. Kevin Durant exploded for 44 points and 9 rebounds as Russell Westbrook went back to PG duties with 12 points, 11 assists and 8 rebounds. John Wall went 9/29 for 20 points as Mike Lloyd was again our best with 15 points off the bench. So much for home court dominance.

Oklahoma City leads 3-1

It was practically a formality that the Thunder would go to the NBA Finals with a win in this game, especially after Kevin Durant lazily puts up 30 points. But the hell with that says Kenneth Faried who poured in 30 points and 9 rebounds while Paul George added 23 points and 9 rebounds as the Grizzly stirred for a 100-92 win. The Thunder shot 37% from the field to our 45% and with another win next game at home (fingers crossed) anything could happen in game seven.

Oklahoma City leads 3-2

I’m pretty sure all the population of Memphis and surrounding cities came to The Cave in anticipation for this game six. Even our own stingy owner Mike Hershey was getting into the action, handing out “The Bear has Awoken” T-Shirts to everyone in a ten mile radius of the stadium. This game is massive is an understatement. Unfortunately John Wall and Paul George combined for 8/30 shooting while Kenneth Faried and Ernest Jameson were hampered by fouls. Hang on, am I missing someone? Yep, Antoine Martin the guy responsible for containing Kevin Durant did just that. KD went 7/17 for only 22 points as Martin put the team on his shoulders with 28 points of his own as we force a game seven 102-88! What an amazing game and an amazing crowd. It might be frustrating dealing with a cheap owner but games like this is why I come to work day after day. We beat the Jazz on their home court in game seven to move on and after this performance I don’t see why we can’t do the same to the Thunder.

Series tied 3-3

The Detroit/Cleveland series has also gone the distance, with game seven being played in Detroit.

The Oklahoma City fans have always been outstanding and this game is no different. Apparently a Memphis fan took on the 500 mile road trip only to be told that he couldn’t bring in his Grizzlies jersey and had to leave it at the coat room. Harsh. It didn’t matter because we played one of the worst games I have ever seen as the GM of this team, even going back to the squad where I was hoarding expirings. I think this picture is definitely worth 1000 words -

Image

We scored 16 points in the first half and shot 25% from the field on our way to a humiliating 70-56 defeat. Kevin Durant had 18 points while Serge Ibaka, Peter Napier and Russell Westbrook doubled up but my God this game will haunt me to the grave.

Oklahoma City wins series 4-3

In the East, John Johnson put up 36 points as the Pistons won easily 114-82 to move onto the NBA Finals.

2018 NBA Finals – Oklahoma City Thunder vs. Detroit Pistons

Game One
Oklahoma City 103 – Detroit 111 (DET 1-0)
Player of the Game – Greg Monroe – 29 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists

Game Two
Oklahoma City 101 – Detroit 105 (DET 2-0)
Player of the Game – Jrue Holiday – 19 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists

Game Three
Detroit 91 – Oklahoma City 102 (DET 2-1)
Player of the Game – Serge Ibaka – 19 points, 10 rebounds

Game Four
Detroit 107 – Oklahoma City 113 (tied 2-2)
Player of the Game – Kevin Durant – 33 points, 10 rebounds

Game Five
Detroit 94 – Oklahoma City 101 (OKC 3-2)
Player of the Game – Kevin Durant – 37 points, 8 rebounds

Game Six
Oklahoma City 93 – Detroit 101 (tied 3-3)
Player of the Game – John Johnson – 35 points

Game Seven
Oklahoma City 93 – Detroit 109 (DET 4-3)
Player of the Game – John Johnson – 35 points

What a massive series, I really didn’t think the Pistons could win it even though they were the favourites. That’s two championships in four years as they add to their 2014 trophy. Congrats to the Detroit Pistons.

Lottery time but we don’t have any picks in the lottery (or any all up) so I’m just in it for the suspense.

14 – Atlanta (0)
13 – Boston (-1)

Holy hell the Pacers have jumped, they have a 0.6% chance of winning it! Talk about suspense.

12 – LA Clippers (-1)
11 – Houston (-1)
10 – Brooklyn (-1)
9 – Portland (-1)
8 – Dallas (-1)
7 – Atlanta (-1)
6 – Chicago (-1)
5 – LA Lakers (-1)
4 – Philadelphia (-2)
3 – Indiana (+10)
2 – Miami (+1)
1 – Phoenix (0)

Even though they probably won’t get one of the two centres unless something drastic happens I’m sure the Pacers are very, very happy jumping ten places to third.

Awards time and I really think that Paul George could get into an All NBA team again.

Most Valuable Player:
Kevin Durant, Oklahoma City Thunder – 30.8 points, 1.4 assists, 8.3 rebounds, 1.2 steals, 1.1 blocks

LBJ had a lower year with is increased help so it was between Durant and Davis for the highest accolade.

Defensive Player of the Year:
Anthony Davis, New Orleans Hornets – 19.4 points, 2.0 assists, 10.1 rebounds, 2.1 steals, 3.8 blocks

Won't give it up in a hurry.

Sixth Man of the Year:
Austin Rivers, Brooklyn Nets – 11.4 points, 6.3 assists, 3.5 rebounds, 0.8 steals, 0.0 blocks

Rookie of the Year:
Marcello Locatelli, Miami Heat – 9.9 points, 3.3 assists, 4.7 rebounds, 0.8 steals, 0.4 blocks

Coach of the Year:
Scott Brooks, Oklahoma City Thunder – 58-24 (.707)

All Rookie Second Team:

Williams Jones, Los Angeles Clippers
Bernard Neal, Charlotte Bobcats
Jeff Cunningham, Los Angeles Lakers

A few days later I get the call from Mr Hershey and he is fairly happy with the team so far but he really isn’t very happy about how much the team costs. He tells me to cut costs or start looking for a new job and if we are over the cap by more than five million then he won’t hesitate to cut me loose. You know what, screw it. I’m going to go all out and try and get a championship, which is why we play the game. If it costs me my job then so be it.

2019 NBA Mock Draft
1 – Phoenix – PG Brooks Badu
2 – Miami – C Bryce Metcalf
3 – Indiana – SG Ron Winston
4 – Philadelphia – PG Jay Warren
5 – LA Lakers – SF Sam Jennings
6 – Chicago – PF Jason Chambers
7 – Atlanta – SF Brian Williams
8 – Dallas – C Emmett Emerson
9 – Portland – PG Jevin Lindeman
10 – Brooklyn – PG Nate Nixon
11 – Houston – SF Cedric Watson
12 – LA Clippers – PG Ben Toton
13 – Boston – PG Andre Blunt
14 – Atlanta – SG Varlam Cherkezov

Well this looks like someone has just pulled names out of a hat. Brooks Badu at #1? Really? Emerson will definitely not go as low as #8 while Cherkezov looks pretty good so #14 will be a steal. Looks like a good time to draft for a PG though.

2018 NBA Draft

I’m going to look to make a huge splash with some trades, even if it means taking on more salary.

1 – Phoenix – C Emmett Emerson
Not the centre I thought would go first but a good enough pick for number one.

2 – Miami – SF Sam Jennings
He was a bolter in the combine but the Heat already have Marcello Locatelli at the SF so this is a strange pick. Good player, strange pick.

3 – Indiana – SG Ron Winston
This guy will definitely be a great player in a few years, mark my words. He is eerily similar to Mateen Yeaton of yesteryear with his size (6’8”) and scoring ability.

Dallas offers me Brandon Jennings for Ernest Jameson and I am very, very tempted as Jennings has really matured as a person and is without a doubt a top five PG in the league. I nix it though as I have a bigger trade in the works.

Memphis trade:
C Ernest Jameson
C Ricardo Marquardt

San Antonio trade:
C Dwight Howard

Winner – Both. Just judging from last season it’s a win for Memphis but a change of scenery for Jameson could be just what he needs to be the player he was. Howard may be 32 years old but he is still a force in this league.

I’m disappointed to see Ricardo go but I just didn’t have the salaries to match without giving up Marquardt or Joe Abney and I really want to see what Joe can do with this team. I’m really happy with this and I’m surprised how much trade value Ernest had in this league, as I had a discussion with Detroit for Greg Monroe which is huge but he isn’t a centre.

4 – Philadelphia – PG Brooks Badu
I really don’t know what everyone sees in this guy but apparently everyone loves him. For the Sixers sake I hope he doesn’t turn out to be another Changa Hendricks.

5 – LA Lakers – C Bryce Metcalf
I really didn’t see him dropping to #5 but this Lakers team is the worst place for him with Travis Ross and Jeff Cunningham on the roster. Triple Towers maybe?

6 – Chicago – SG Varlam Cherkezov
With Jake Chase heading into free agency and the Bulls having no guarantee that he will be back nabbing Cherkezov here is a great move.

7 – Atlanta – SF Brian Williams
Great all around player and at 6’9” will fit in nicely with the Hawks’ frontcourt. The experts are divided but I’m giving it to the Hawks here, dead on.

8 – Dallas – PG Jevin Lindeman
Very slight player who really needs to put on bulk to be effective in this league. Has great court vision but has probably been picked too high here.

9 – Portland – PG Nate Nixon
Word around is that the Blazers wanted Lindeman and as they couldn’t get him they took the next PG on the board, the 155lb Nixon. This was a bad decision as he shouldn’t be a lottery pick and Portland will shake their heads after the draft.

10 – Brooklyn – SF Lavor Freeman
Good pick at #10 as he was probably the best player available here. The experts don’t like it but I’m in the Freeman camp.

11 – Houston – SF Jarrett Taylor
Another team hoping for a player to drop (Freeman) and taking the panic pick. Not as bad as Portland’s pick but Taylor could have been taken lower down.

12 – LA Clippers – PF Jason Chambers
Fantastic pick here and could possibly be the new starter at the Clips. Not a massive steal because the teams in front of him were picking for need but still an above average selection.

13 – Boston – PG Jay Warren
He needs to work on the mental side of basketball to succeed but his physical tools are NBA ready. Good pick but with an asterisk.

14 – Atlanta – SF Cedric Watson
Hmm, he’s fit and athletic I guess. Umm...

15 – Golden State – PG Andre Blunt
16 – Detroit – SG Charles Gaines
17 – Washington – C Francis Culuko
18 – Sacramento – SF Terence Lampley
19 – Milwaukee – SF Nate Freeman
Brother of #10 pick Lavor Freeman.

20 – Detroit – SG Shawn Thompson
21 – Charlotte – SF Devin Davis
22 – New York – SF Derek Green
23 – Phoenix – PF Kareem Rhodes
Excellent pick here, Boston were thinking of drafting him at #13.

24 – Cleveland – PG Ben Toton
25 – San Antonio – SG Tim Curry
26 – Golden State – C Donnie Hankins
27 – Oklahoma City – PF Quyn Cox
And the winner for the weirdest name goes to...

28 – New Orleans – PG Gary Craft
29 – Detroit – PF Jeremy Brown
30 – Utah – PG Cortez Small

Here are the draft day trades and to be honest, there are some doozies here.

Phoenix trade:
SF Jim Turner

Indiana trade:
SF Kwame Cravens

Winner – Indiana. It’s a straight swap, they play the same position and their salaries are similar to it comes down to talent and Turner is a better player than Cravens, case closed.

Indiana trade:
C Andray Blatche
PG Matt Jones

Sacramento trade:
PG Isaiah Thomas
2018 2nd round pick

Winner – Indiana. They win again as Thomas is a great floor general while Blatche is stuck behind DeMarcus Cousins and Bismack Biyombo.

Utah trade:
PG Myron Nee

Detroit trade:
PG Changa Hendricks

Winner – Draw. Utah is Hendricks’ fifth team in three years while Nee is on a Piston team that has six PGs on the roster. Maybe that Draw should be a Neither.

Charlotte trade:
SF Tom Howard

Cleveland trade:
PG Li-chi King

Winner – Charlotte. King is really, really raw but has the potential to be a quality starting PG while Howard is a good defender and not much else.

OK, doozies isn’t the word for it but there were some good trades and it’s always good to see Changa get traded again.

I renounce Brandon Rush, Darrell Arthur and AJ Price but keep a hold of Mike Lloyd. I’ve decided that I’m going all in this season, to hell with the consequences.

We don’t have any players on our squad that are eligible to play in the Summer League so I’ll skip right past that. Talk about a win now team where all our players are too old for the SL.

At the start of the free agency period I look over the team and realise we only have eight signed players so the focus is to round out the bench with good defenders as our starters are very much set in stone.

Top Ten Free Agents
PF Derrick Favors
PF Chris Drexler
PF Josh Smith
SF Andrew Owens*
PG Charles Canady*
PF Lynn McMillian
C Demond Lewis
SF Carmelo Anthony
SG Jake Chase
PG John Weir

Not the most overwhelming crop but it is really deep so getting good bench players on the cheap should be a doable task.

On the first day I offer Mike Lloyd a four year, $20 million contract which could be underpaying but I’m just putting it out there. I also throw a Hail Mary to Jake Chase for our MLE which is a massive shot in the dark.

Chris Drexler must like it in Denver as he re-signs there very quickly for a five year, $69 million deal.

The next day Derrick Favors, Andrew Owens and Demond Lewis all re-sign with their respective teams as well as an old Grizzly Hassan Benton who got a three year $17 million deal for some reason.

On the same day Mike Lloyd re-signs with us for the above deal Jake Chase goes north to Toronto in a massive steal, as the Raptors will be paying him $43 million over four years. That is a huge blow to Chicago as he was their best player.

Steph Curry takes his talents to the Big Apple, signing a four year, $48 million deal to the Knicks while Joe Holmes signs a $10 million a year contract with the Lakers while Alfred Abney signs a very similar one to Phoenix.

Charles Canady jumps ship to Golden State as the Warriors spend no time getting a replacement for Steph Curry, signing Canady to an offer sheet worth $45 million over four years. On the same day, Derrick Williams signs with Brooklyn, Andrew Seitz goes to the Lakers and Eric Johnson seems to want to be Jake Chase’s back up, signing with Toronto.

On tender offer day Chris Paul goes to San Antonio for three years while Gordon Hayward signs with Houston for three years as well. There is only one top ten player left after Lynn McMillian re-signed with the Jazz for way too much money, a five year $45 million contract to be a bench player. Josh Smith is the last of the top ten players. I offer Kevin Seraphin our MLE and I hope he bites because he would be awesome off our bench.

The Lakers finally have a PG as they sign Grevis Vasquez to a three year deal while Enes Kanter re-signs with the Clippers. Josh Smith goes to San Antonio and will make and outstanding duo with Chris Paul while Al Jefferson goes back to Charlotte for another four years. Raymond Felton signs with us for two years on the minimum which is great for our backup PG stocks.

Nooooooooooooo, not only did Kevin Seraphin dick me around for over a week he decides to go to New York for nearly $10 million a year. Why couldn’t you say we didn’t have enough money for you Kevin so we could look somewhere else? I’m sure the Knicks organisation had something to do with this to screw me over. Brandon Rush comes back to Memphis on a minimum deal as Michael Beasley signs with the Kings.

Yes, Andrew Bogut, Ekpe Udoh and Malik Cunningham decide they like Memphis and sign on the dotted line and that gives us 14 players and I’m done. With a salary of just over $80 million I’m sure our wonderful owner is not going to be happy but I don’t care, I want a championship.

Training camp has come and gone and Joe Abney has grown a little, even to the point where he could start at SG from the start of the season.

The Pre season polls have us second in the West behind Utah which is fair enough. I still think we should be in the discussion as a championship contender but we will have to wait and see if this team can gel quickly.

Eastern Conference Pre Season Poll
1. Detroit Pistons
2. Cleveland Cavaliers
3. Charlotte Bobcats
4. Brooklyn Nets
5. Toronto Raptors
Last – Orlando Magic

No way should Brooklyn be in the top four as their starting five consists of two SFs and three PFs with Derrick Williams starting at PG for some reason. In fact, they only have on PG on the roster in Brandon Croom and he didn’t play a game last season. Orlando are going to have to rely on Kemba Walker to score all their points, as any team that has Wesley Johnson starting is in deep trouble.

Western Conference Pre Season Poll
1. Utah Jazz
2. Memphis Grizzlies
3. Oklahoma City Thunder
4. Sacramento Kings
5. Minnesota Timberwolves
Last – Golden State

The Hornets will not be sixth in the West at the end of the season, they’re just too talented. I don’t see the Kings going top five either.

Here is your 2018-2019 “My last season here” Memphis Grizzlies –

PG – John Wall
SG – Joe Abney
SF – Paul George
PF – Kenneth Faried
C – Dwight Howard
6th – Mike Lloyd
7th – Ekpe Udoh
8th – Antoine Martin
9th – Nikola Vucevic
10th – Andrew Bogut
11th – Brandon Rush
12th – Raymond Felton
13th – Dante Cunningham
14th – Malik Cunningham

As you can see, we are a legit ten deep and it will take a few games to really work out how many minutes people get and if I will need to ship anyone out.

I’m really excited about this team, not only because our starters are as good as any team but our bench could possibly beat some of the bottom feeders in the league. Starting Felton/Lloyd/Martin/Udoh/Bogut would be pretty decent I reckon.

Our first game of the season is a 95-76 whitewash of Sacramento with Paul George leading the way with 24 points and 9 turnovers. Kenneth Faried was great with 8 points, 7 rebounds, 6 steals and 5 blocks as we hold the Kings to only 40% from the field. DeMarcus Cousins was the best for the losers with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

Memphis Grizzlies 1-0

I should have said that Mike Lloyd is now starting at SG but he fouled out in only 18 minutes against Phoenix which gave Joe Abney plenty of court time. In our 122-95 win over Phoenix Abney had 21 points in 21 minutes while Antoine Martin had 26 points off the bench as well. Dwight Howard went 8/12 from the field for 22 points and 10 rebounds in a great showing for his new team. The Suns have the worst balance in the league as 6’10” PF Nate Roberts is starting at SG, scoring 22 points on 13/20 FTs on the night.

Memphis Grizzlies 2-0

**TRADE**

Miami trade:
SF Danilo Gallinari

Dallas trade:
OJ Mayo
2019 2nd round pick

Winner – Miami
. Gallinari is probably a better player but the Mavs now have six starter quality SFs on the roster, making Gallinari just another part of the logjam. Mayo is now the Heat’s sixth man.

What’s great about this team is its depth; any one player can bring the noise. In our 97-71 statement win over Cleveland it was Kenneth Faried who put up 24 points and 14 rebounds while Antoine Martin had 19 points to help him out. We kept the Cavs to 33% shooting as Kyrie Irving was their only light with 12 points and 11 assists but was also held to 5/19 shooting. Andrew Bynum had 6 points and 6 rebounds before fouling out in 21 minutes.

Memphis Grizzlies 3-0

That’s four in a row to start the season as we put the Wizards to the sword with a 123-93 win. Dwight Howard is fitting in nicely here with 34 points and 10 rebounds while Paul George and Kenneth Faried combined for 45 points and 19 rebounds. Bradley Beal top scored for the Wizards with 29 points but Ricky Rubio had a night to forget with 9 points and 6 assists.

Memphis Grizzlies 4-0

It’s the 4-0 Grizzlies versus the 0-4 Magic so it is just a formality that we won right? We luckily yes, but it was hard fought. Orlando got out to a double digit lead before we zoomed back in the third to take the lead and the game 92-83. Dwight Howard was again our best with 26 points and 9 rebounds while Nikola Vucevic was great off the bench with 7 points and 5 rebounds in only 17 minutes. The Magic had six players in double figures but their leader was only 13 points, and Kemba Walker needed 21 shots for those 13 points.

Memphis Grizzlies 5-0

In our massive 106-75 win over Miami we had three standouts, starting with Kenneth Faried’s 22 points and 12 rebounds. Next was Paul George’s 25 points and third was John Wall’s 16 assists. After that there really isn’t much left to do but it was good to see all of our players get some playing time. Reigning Rookie of the Year Marcello Locatelli had a terrible game with 2 points and 6 turnovers on 1/6 FG.

Memphis Grizzlies 6-0

The Lakers came into town and leave with an embarrassing 106-78 loss as Travis Ross fouled out in an astonishing 11 minutes with only 1 point to his name. Paul George had 26 points and 10 rebounds to lead the way while Dwight Howard also had a 20/10 game with 21 points and 12 rebounds. The Lakers shot 28% from the field, led by Dylan Peterson’s 4/16 night for a team high 15 points.

Memphis Grizzlies 7-0

Our biggest test so far this season as the 7-1 Timberwolves come to town. Fortunately for us we outscore them 32-21 in the second quarter and that broke the game open to let us win 107-98 to remain unbeaten. Antoine Martin might not coming off the bench but he has been outstanding, this time putting up 17 points, 10 rebounds, 7 assists and 4 blocks in only 26 minutes. Kevin Love led the way for the T’Wolves with 21 points and 12 rebounds but they only shot 38% from the field.

Memphis Grizzlies 8-0

Ah, it was bound to happen eventually. Houston pummel us in the third term to break out winning streak with a 104-92 win. James Harden led the way with 26 points while Lavoy Allen hit all five of his shots for 11 points off the bench. Dwight Howard did his best with 32 points and 15 rebounds but he just didn’t have any other support.

Memphis Grizzlies 8-1

We didn’t let that loss slow us down as we get right back to winning with a 101-88 victory over the Clippers. Paul George had 19 points while Kenneth Faried put up 22 points and 12 rebounds while Antoine Martin had 11 points and 9 rebounds off the bench. I’m pretty sure I have commented on Martin’s play more times this year now he is on the bench than I did all last season. Christopher de Castro had his way with Mike Lloyd for 31 points and 7 rebounds.

Memphis Grizzlies 9-1

It’s a home and home against Denver with the first game being in Colorado. Dwight Howard put up 24 points and 14 rebounds as we outscore the Nuggets by 12 in the final term to win 99-88. John Wall had 20 points and 6 assists while Ekpe Udoh blocked four shots off the bench. Harrison Barnes led the way for the Nuggets with 22 points while Chris Drexler was hounded all night with 9 points and 9 rebounds in only 24 minutes.

Memphis Grizzlies 10-1

Back home and it was a struggle all night and Denver capitalised on our struggles with a 112-104 surprise. Harrison Barnes is fitting into his new PG position quite well, tonight having a 21 point, 13 rebound and 10 assist triple double while Murman Andronikov had 20 points. We had six players in double figures but when our highest scorer is John Wall with 17 points we aren’t going to win many games. We need a player above 20 points.

Memphis Grizzlies 10-2

To make matters worse both Raymond Felton and Andrew Bogut complained to the media about playing time so I tell them to be quiet or be prepared to go. Sure you can have a bitch behind closed doors but going straight to the media is just not on and makes the whole organisation look bad.

We might have won 86-76 against Golden State but man was it a slog. Neither team shot more than 37% from the field and both teams had 21 turnovers in a terrible display of professional basketball. Kenneth Faried was our best with 13 points and 17 rebounds while John Wall had one of the worst shooting nights I have ever seen, going 0/14 from the field for 2 points. Charles Canady led the way with 15 points but did turn the ball over seven times. Let’s just slide past this game and never talk about it again.

Memphis Grizzlies 11-2

Excellent game as we take care of the 12-3 Thunder 110-99 in Oklahoma City. Talk about showing up the elite teams. Russell Westbrook had 30 points and Peter Napier had 25 points and 14 rebounds but Kevin Durant only had six shots the whole game for 12 points. He wasn’t in foul trouble, it was our defence that smothered him. John Wall had 22 points and 4 assists while Paul George took over the distributing with 9 assists.

Memphis Grizzlies 12-2

After an outstanding 12-2 November we are still... second. Great. The Jazz went 14-2 on the month while Minnesota and Oklahoma City are at 12-4 so this is going to be a dogfight for the top of the West. Phoenix are at 2-14 while Portland aren’t far behind on 2/11 for the worst in the conference.

In the East Detroit are 12-2 and breaking away from the pack. Boston are close behind with a 10-4 record but the pack is a long way behind. Miami and Orlando are battling their own Florida fight to see who will be the worst in the conference with the Heat winning so far on 2/13, the Magic on 2/12.

Memphis Top Points
Dwight Howard – 18.7
Paul George – 15.4
Kenneth Faried – 15.1

Memphis Top Rebounds
Dwight Howard – 10.0
Kenneth Faried – 9.1
Paul George – 6.4

Memphis Top Assists
John Wall – 7.7
Paul George – 4.1
Mike Lloyd – 2.9

League Top Efficiency
Kevin Durant (OKC) – 31.4 (32.3 points, 1.2 assists, 8.4 rebounds, 0.9 steals, 1.3 blocks)
DeMarcus Cousins (SAC) – 28.1 (23.4 points, 1.6 assists, 12.3 rebounds, 3.6 steals, 1.7 blocks)
John Johnson (DET) – 27.4 (23.2 points, 3.9 assists, 5.3 rebounds, 0.4 steals, 2.1 blocks)

Rookie Top Efficiency
Brooks Badu (PHI) – 11.0 (8.6 points, 4.4 assists, 2.4 rebounds, 0.5 steals, 0.1 blocks)
Sam Jennings (MIA) – 9.5 (11.3 points, 1.3 assists, 5.3 rebounds, 0.9 steals, 0.7 blocks)
Mark Harris (CLE) – 8.0 (6.0 points, 0.0 assists, 2.0 rebounds, 0.0 steals, 0.0 blocks)

November Player of the Month – Kevin Durant, Oklahoma City Thunder - 32.3 points, 1.2 assists, 8.4 rebounds, 0.9 steals and 1.3 blocks per game.

November Rookie of the Month – Sam Jennings, Miami Heat - 11.3 points, 1.3 assists, 5.3 rebounds, 0.9 steals and 0.7 blocks per game.

We start the month on the road to the 12-4 Timberwolves and surprisingly enough we take care of the easily 109-96. Dwight Howard is really gelling with this team, tonight having 28 points and 9 rebounds while Kenneth Faried put up 20 points and 17 rebounds. Kevin Love was everywhere for Minnesota with 24 points and 14 rebounds with Monta Ellis having 22 points. Our old PG Damian Lillard had 15 points and 8 assists before fouling out.

Memphis Grizzlies 13-2

Phoenix are all over the place and really need a clean out. In the meantime we cleaned their clock 119-91 behind Dwight Howard’s 23 points, 12 rebounds and 5 steals and Paul George and Kenneth Faried combined for 45 points and 14 rebounds. Our starting frontcourt are really stepping up which is great because John Wall can just focus on being the awesome distributor that he is. Nate Roberts (the 6’10” PF posing as a SG) had 17 points, 9 rebounds and 9 turnovers. I really don’t know why he is starting there. Maybe after I get fired from Memphis I can turn their problems around.

Memphis Grizzlies 14-2

You know how disappointed I was with Ernest Jameson here in Memphis? Right now he is even worse with San Antonio. Talk about peaking too early. After 16 or so games he is only averaging 11.9 points and 8.5 rebounds a game, a long way from his 20.1 points and 11.9 rebounds only two years ago. Tonight he did much better with 19 points and 13 rebounds but we still beat the Spurs 102-93 as Kenneth Faried led the way with 23 points and 7 rebounds.

Memphis Grizzlies 15-2

**TRADE**

Atlanta trade:
PF Amare Stoudemire
2019 2nd round pick

Phoenix trade:
C Fab Melo

Winner – Neither. What a terrible trade for both teams. Atlanta trades for another C who will never get any court time behind Demond Lewis and Mark Hill while Phoenix trades for ANOTHER PF which they have like a million.

Phoenix does have talent but they just have it doubled up everywhere and they don’t know what to do with it.

Orlando shot a woeful 32% from the field as we absolutely annihilated them 112-72. Dwight Howard was a man among boys with 25 points and 13 rebounds while Kenneth Faried took previous #1 draft pick Casey Floyd to school with 19 points and 13 rebounds while fouling Floyd out in only 17 minutes. When Wesley Johnson top scores for your team with 15 points you know you’re in trouble.

Memphis Grizzlies 16-2

I’m not going to get too excited as we extend our winning streak to seven games with a 114-82 away win over Brooklyn because most of the teams we have beaten have been sub 500 and at home. John Wall was the best in this game with 25 points and 8 assists while Paul George was uber-efficient with 26 points and 7 rebounds on only 8/9 shooting. Tristian Thompson was important for the Nets with 20 points and 13 rebounds off the bench as Blake Griffin fouled out in only 16 minutes.

Memphis Grizzlies 17-2

**TRADE**

Charlotte trade:
PG Marco Barker

Miami trade:
PF Chevalier Williams
2019 2nd round pick

Winner – Miami. Even though he isn’t slated to start right now I really hope Barker gets a chance to on this horrible Heat roster because he could be a great PG in the future.

That’s more like it. We go to Boston to battle the 14-8 Celtics and they give us a hell of a fight. We get out to a 22 point lead going into the fourth until the Celts come racing back with a 36-23 final term to just fall short as we take the win 106-101. John Wall was so close to a triple double with 23 points, 9 rebounds and 8 assists while Paul and Kenneth combined for 42 points again. Chandler Parsons had 25 points for the defeated while John Weir held his own against Wall with 11 points, 10 rebounds, 8 assists and 0 turnovers.

Memphis Grizzlies 18-2

**TRADE**

Milwaukee trade:
SG Iman Shumpert
2019 2nd round pick

Minnesota trade:
SF Al-Farouq Aminu
SF Chase Budinger

Winner – Minnesota. What are the Bucks thinking?!? They trade away a superstar defender and quality scorer for nothing more than expiring. Timberwolves are legit championship contenders now but are strangely still sticking with Monta Ellis at the starting SG position.

WOW. What a massive trade for the Wolves. Damn, if I knew Shump was on the block I would definitely tried to get him.

The Spurs get their revenge as Chris Paul torches John Wall for 25 points and 8 assists as they win 103-90. Ernest Jameson was disappointing with only 11 points as Kenneth Faried was our only decent player with 24 points and 14 rebounds.

Memphis Grizzlies 18-3

Paul George (26 points, 6 rebounds), Kenneth Faried (24 points, 10 rebounds, 7 blocks, 5 steals) and Dwight Howard (20 points, 12 rebounds) combined for a whopping 70 points, 28 rebounds, 11 steals and 11 blocks in our 112-81 victory over Dallas. Granted the Mavs were without their superstar Brandon Jennings but tonight they just didn’t have any chance against our magnificent starting frontcourt.

Memphis Grizzlies 19-3

Did I say that Dwight Howard was taking over this team? Sorry, I should have said Kenneth Faried after this performance in our 108-82 win over the Clippers. “Don’t call me Ken” Faried had 33 points and 20 rebounds to totally destroy the Clips’ chance of winning. Paul George was a distant second with 23 points and 7 rebounds. Christopher de Castro was again their best with 22 points and 8 rebounds.

Memphis Grizzlies 20-3

The Lakers are a shell of what they used to be but they do have some potential, just not now. We had their measure from the opening tip as we sweep them aside 111-76 behind Paul George’s 22 points, 12 rebounds, 8 assists and 4 steals while Mike Lloyd had 10 points in 11 minutes as Brandon Rush started the game at SG. Travis Ross had 15 points to lead the Lakers but only 3 rebounds; in fact LA only had 27 rebounds for the whole game compared to our 49 boards.

Memphis Grizzlies 21-3

The Bobcats are a very good team, and they showed it two days later as they blanked us 98-80. Ty Lawson and Klay Thompson scored 26 points apiece while Michael Kidd-Gilchrist had 15 points, 8 assists, 6 rebounds and 5 blocks for a great all around game. Dwight Howard was our best with 22 points and 11 rebounds but when John Wall goes 5/22 it’s hard to win.

Memphis Grizzlies 21-4

Kenneth Faried had 26 points, 14 rebounds and 5 blocks while Dwight Howard chipped in for 22 points and 16 rebounds as we out-rebound the Rockets 61-36 to win 112-96. James Harden tried his hardest with 33 points but the rest of his team just didn’t show up.

Memphis Grizzlies 22-4

The Bucks aren’t as good without Iman Shumpert as we roll them 101-85 in Milwaukee. Chase Budinger does a good impression with 27 points at the SG position but when we have Dwight Howard putting up 24 points and 18 rebounds and Kenneth Faried chipping in with 21 points and 11 rebounds it’s hard for the Bucks to get a look in. Antoine Martin was great off the bench in the place of foul hampered Brandon Rush with 21 points in 28 minutes.

Memphis Grizzlies 23-4

Guess what? We’re now #1 in the West. Not but much mind you, with Utah breathing down our neck so hard my hairs are standing on end at 26-6 with the Thunder down to 22-9. The shambles of Phoenix are still last with a 5-23 record.

In the East Detroit are beating us with a 24-4 record, good for a five game gap in front of second placed Cleveland at 20-10. Miami are equally repugnant at 5-24, beating Phoenix out for the worst record in the league.

Memphis Top Points
Dwight Howard – 19.3
Kenneth Faried – 18.2
Paul George – 15.7

Memphis Top Assists
John Wall – 7.9
Paul George – 4.2
Mike Lloyd – 2.4

Memphis Top Rebounds
Kenneth Faried – 10.1
Dwight Howard – 10.0
Paul George – 6.6

League Top Efficiency
Kevin Durant (OKC) – 29.1 (29.8 points, 1.3 assists, 8.0 rebounds, 0.9 steals, 1.5 blocks)
DeMarcus Cousins (SAC) – 26.3 (21.9 points, 1.6 assists, 11.3 rebounds, 3.1 steals, 1.3 blocks)
Lebron James (UTA) – 25.9 (24.8 points, 6.7 assists, 5.1 rebounds, 1.8 steals, 0.7 blocks)

Rookie Top Efficiency
Brooks Badu (PHI) – 10.8 (8.4 points, 4.7 assists, 2.4 rebounds, 0.5 steals, 0.0 blocks)
Sam Jennings (MIA) – 10.3 (11.3 points, 1.5 assists, 4.5 rebounds, 1.2 steals, 0.9 blocks)
Jevin Lindeman (DAL) – 8.4 (7.3 points, 2.3 assists, 1.6 rebounds, 0.2 steals, 0.2 blocks)

First Round of NBA Draft Prospects
1. SF Raul Lopez (Virginia), Freshman, 6’10”, 221lbs
2. PF Chad Dickenman (Cincinnati), Sophomore, 6’9”, 236lbs
3. C Ronnie Howard (Temple), Freshman, 7’1”, 294lbs
4. SF Ryan Garris (UT-Chattanooga), Junior, 6’9”, 217lbs
5. PF Leone De Niro (Italy), 19 years old, 6’9”, 223lbs

Thoughts – This is the Raul Lopez draft. Do you know why teams like Phoenix and Miami are tanking so badly? It’s because of Raul Lopez. This is his stat line so far – 36.2 points, 13.8 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 1.4 blocks and 1.4 steals per game. Read that again. Lopez is doing that as a freshman and he is 6’10”. Talk about superstar phenom.

December Player of the Month – Kevin Durant, Oklahoma City Thunder – 27.1 points, 7.5 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 0.9 steals and 1.7 blocks per game.

December Rookie of the Month – Sam Jennings, Miami Heat – 11.3 points, 3.7 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.1 blocks per game.

Atlanta comes to town and it’s the first time I have had to really see how Avery Bradley and Deron Williams are doing after I traded them away. After this game it seems like they are doing just fine as they combined for 49 points and 18 assists as they beat us by a single point 105-104. Bradley was PotG with 28 points while Deron Williams chipped in with 21 points and 16 assists of his own. Kenneth Faried was our best with 20 points and 11 rebounds while Andrew Bogut finally got some court time with 13 points and 7 rebounds off the bench.

Memphis Grizzlies 23-5

Our first losing streak of the season as we go down to the amazingly hot Timberwolves 131-115. They just ran us out of the stadium, putting up a whopping 95 shots in regulation. Kevin Love had 22 points and 11 rebounds while Iman Shumpert put up 22 points and 4 steals in only 29 minutes off the bench. It seems like they are keeping him on the bench which is a stupid idea. Kenneth Faried was our best with 35 points and 9 rebounds but he and Dwight Howard both fouled out early in the final term.

Memphis Grizzlies 23-6

That’s three in a row as we get smashed 116-87 to Oklahoma City as Kevin Durant pours in 34 points to go with Russell Westbrook’s 27 points and 9 rebounds. All five of our starters were in double figures but Kenneth Faried was the leader with 16 points which isn’t enough against a team like the Thunder. No need to panic just yet.

Memphis Grizzlies 23-7

That’s better as we take out the Lakers 116-103 behind Paul George’s 35 points and John Wall’s 18 points and 14 assists. We really needed those two to fire because they have had a little bit of a slump but more importantly we play the Jazz in Utah tomorrow and need them to be on their game. Dylan Peterson top scored for the Lakers with 24 points and 9 rebounds off the bench.

Memphis Grizzlies 24-7

Nope. Lebron James, Derrick Favors and Mark Lewis combined for 79 points as they nearly beat us themselves in a 107-86 victory to the Jazz. Lewis had 31 points and 9 rebounds (5/12 FT) while Derrick Favors put up 20 points, 11 rebounds and 6 blocks in the win. Jon Wall had 17 assists but shot 2/11 while Dante Cunningham went 0/3 from the field but hauled in 12 rebounds off the bench.

Memphis Grizzlies 24-8

Being back home always feels good and it shows on the scoreboard as we blow pas the Warriors 124-113 after shooting 52% from the field. Dwight Howard was our best with 26 points and 9 rebounds while Antoine Martin put up 16 points on only 4/7 shooting off the bench. Derrick Woodward was the best for Golden State with 18 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.

Memphis Grizzlies 25-8

Unfortunately after the game I was told that Paul George has been having severe back spasms and will be out for over a week with Antoine Martin slotting into the starting SF position while George is out.

Antoine Martin has 17 points in his start as we absolutely demolish the Knicks 115-89, and that’s flattering New York as we got out to a 39 point lead at one stage. Kenneth Faried had 27 points and 11 rebounds while John Wall had 22 points and 12 assists. Camara Brinker has become an excellent centre and had 21 points and 13 rebounds tonight but this team isn’t the same one that was a championship threat every year when I was there. Rudy Gay went 5/21 from the field for 19 points.

Memphis Grizzlies 26-8

Back on the road again with three massive games, first against the 26-12 Hornets and we massacre them to really show the league what we are made of 107-87. Paul George seems better with 24 points, 9 rebounds and 6 steals while Antoine Martin had 18 points off the bench. Anthony Davis had a terrible shooting night, going 3/13 for 17 points and 9 rebounds as Lewis Vines was their best with 21 points and 6 turnovers.

Memphis Grizzlies 27-8

**TRADE**

Indiana trade:
SG Stefan Nitschke

Phoenix trade:
SG Alexander Verhaeren

Winner – Indiana. Verhaeren has all the signs of being an elite SG in this league but Phoenix stupidly limited his playing time, instead starting PF Nate Roberts at SG. Nitschke is going to suffer the same fate while Indiana at least has AV as their first SG off the bench. Phoenix are becoming the biggest laughing stock in the whole league.

Next on the road trip from hell is the 22-14 Cavs and it was a real team effort as we held our nerve after Cleveland stormed back as we won 94-89. Dwight Howard and Kenneth Faried combined for 37 points and 23 rebounds while Antoine Martin poured in 18 points off the bench. Kyrie Irving took 28 shots to get 29 points while Andrew Bynum was nullified, going 4/8 for only 10 points and 8 rebounds.

Memphis Grizzlies 28-8

Last on our road trip is the 32-6 Pistons and obviously we couldn’t keep it up and fell 104-91 to probably the best team in the league, even better than Utah. John Johnson had 27 points while Jrue Holiday put in 20 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists. Kenneth Faried had 26 points and 9 rebounds but we just ran out of gas after the other two hard fought road games.

Memphis Grizzlies 28-9

**TRADE**

Miami trade:
SG OJ Mayo

Oklahoma City trade:
SF John Bragg
PG George Hill

Winner – Oklahoma City. The Thunder get better because for some reason the Heat wanted another SF to add to their collection and if things don’t work out Mayo is a massive expiring contract.

I still don’t know why the Bucks traded Iman Shumpert but it worked in our favour as we destroyed them 117-88 after a massive 31-12 final term. Kenneth Faried, Paul George and Dwight Howard combined for 72 points on 32/47 shooting, or 68% while John Wall gave them the ball with 17 assists. Rajon Rondo was the lone hand for Milwaukee with 17 points and 8 assists.

Memphis Grizzlies 29-9

I really like Paul Orvis as a player and he has done great things for Toronto, averaging over 20 points and game and 2.5 steals and 2.5 blocks is amazing. Unfortunately for him he didn’t have any help as we send the Raptors to extinction 105-87. Orvis had 19 points but their star recruit Jake Chase only had 15 points on 6/17 shooting. Dwight Howard was our best with 24 points but Paul George was the talking point as he nearly had a triple double with 9 points, 9 assists and 7 rebounds.

Memphis Grizzlies 30-9

Another player that has surprised me is my old enigma Wesley Fields. Fields has been great this season, averaging 15 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists on decent shooting for once for the Blazers. But again, in our 97-75 win over Portland he didn’t have any help, putting up 18 points and 9 rebounds but nothing else. Dwight Howard was everywhere with 29 points and 11 rebounds but it could have been more if he could shoot free throws, going 13/23 from the charity stripe.

Memphis Grizzlies 31-9

Paul George had a man sized stat line with 25 points, 10 rebounds, 5 steals and 4 blocks in our 114-90 pummelling of Philadelphia. Antoine Martin stepped in as well with 18 points in only 20 minutes, going 7/8 from the floor and 4/4 from three. Brooks Badu has made me eat my hat as he is actually doing really well, tonight putting up 15 points and 8 assists in the loss. I’m still bamboozled as to why the Sixers aren’t starting star SF Gabe White. Sure they have Andrew Owens at SF but he is much better than PF Patrick Patterson and at 6’10” White can easily play there.

Memphis Grizzlies 32-9

Our last game of the season is a 111-101 win over Oklahoma City, mostly because only Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook decided to play. Durant had 38 points (on 16/16 FT) and Westbrook put in 23 points but no other Thunder player scored in double figures. John Wall was our best with 23 points and 8 assists while Nikola Vucevic had 12 points and 5 rebounds off the bench after Dwight Howard got into early foul trouble.

Memphis Grizzlies 33-9

After our little 1-4 stumble during the month we went 9-1 to finish it off to still be #1 in the West, practically. Utah are currently -1 games behind us because they even though they have won three more games than we have they have lost one more so their win percentage is 0.003 behind us. Tlak about close. Phoenix have somehow won 9 games this season, but have also lost 34 to be last in the West to no-one’s surprise.

In the East Detroit are again leading the way with a 36-8 record, 4.5 games in front of Washington at 32-13 and a massive 10.5 games in front of third place Cleveland. Miami are strangely worse than Phoenix at 7-37 and are already talking about their saviour Raul Lopez.

Memphis Top Points
Dwight Howard – 19.4
Kenneth Faried – 18.8
Paul George – 16.0

Memphis Top Assists
John Wall – 8.9
Paul George – 3.9
Malik Cunningham – 2.2

Memphis Top Rebounds
Kenneth Faried – 9.8
Dwight Howard – 9.8
Paul George – 6.3

League Top Efficiency
Kevin Durant (OKC) – 30.0 (30.4 points, 1.4 assists, 8.1 rebounds, 1.0 steal, 1.5 blocks)
DeMarcus Cousins (SAC) – 26.3 (21.9 points, 1.6 assists, 11.3 rebounds, 3.1 steals, 1.3 blocks)
Kevin Love (MIN) – 25.7 (25.0 points, 1.2 assists, 11.9 rebounds, 1.0 steal, 0.3 blocks)

Rookie Top Efficiency
Brooks Badu (PHI) – 12.8 (10.2 points, 5.7 assists, 2.5 rebounds, 0.9 steals, 0.1 blocks)
Sam Jennings (MIA) – 9.2 (10.5 points, 1.5 assists, 4.3 rebounds, 1.1 steals, 0.9 blocks)
Jevin Lindeman (DAL) – 7.6 (6.6 points, 2.4 assists, 2.0 rebounds, 0.4 steals, 0.1 blocks)

Second Round of NBA Draft Prospects (previous rank in brackets) –
1. (1) SF Raul Lopez (Virginia), Freshman, 6’10”, 221lbs
2. (NR) C Eryk Charnowski (Poland), 17 years old, 6’10”, 254lbs
3. (2) PF Chad Dickenman (Cincinnati), Sophomore, 6’9”, 236lbs
4. (3) C Ronnie Howard (Temple), Freshman, 7’1”, 284lbs
5. (4) SF Ryan Garris (UT-Chattanooga), Junior, 6’9”, 217lbs

Thoughts – Lopez’s numbers dropped a little but he is still far and away the best prospect seen since I have been in the league. Everyone is sleeping on Garris right now, maybe because he is playing for UT-Chattanooga (whoever they are) and a junior but he is the real deal so far.
