1/10/94: Sam Houston St (12-3, 2-0) @ Texas San Antonio (5-10, 0-2)
Pre-game Notes
1. They lost their first 2 conference games, but they were close games (one was in OT). In both losses, they had 40+ rebounds per game, so we have to make sure we limit them on the boards. They might run more 5-out sets, to take away our big men from the basket.
2. Their starting PG is the only player averaging in double figures (13 ppg). We'll stick to man, single coverage on everyone.
Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Freedom: Auto / 75%
2. Defense Sets / Intensity: Man to Man / 7
3. Press Sets / Frequency: HC Trap / 8
4. Off/Def Reb Intensity: 10/9
5. Off Pace / Focus: 5 / Favor Inside
Tip off (1st Half)
14:19, Down 8-11
Both teams trading turn overs (2 each). Cook scored all our 8 pts. Their 4 scored on a 3, so yes, they like to play outside even their big men. Carr has 2 PFs.
9:08, Up 19-14
We're shooting well (57% FG), but the fouls our mounting against us. Cook also has 2 PF so he's on the bench together with Carr.
6:54, Up 28-16
We go on a run, which forced them to call a time out. Everyone is contributing both on offense and defense. I am pleased, but reminded the team not be complacent..
2:55, Up 32-23
They hit 2 consecutive 3s. I called time out. I am tempted to bring back Carr and Cook on the floor, but decided not to take a risk
Halftime, Up 42-25
A strong finish to end the half.
Notes
1. My seldom used SF Jonathan Smith came up big with 8 pts in 10 mins. Carr meanwhile is scoreless, playing only 6 mins due to foul trouble.
2. We did a good job passing the ball; 15 assists on 17 FGMs.
3. They continue to play outside, which allowed us to dominate the paints; 14-4 advantage on inside points
4. Granville has 4 tos. I may have to play Johnson more
5. We have limited them to only 12 rebs thus far
Start of 2nd Half
I won't adjust the rebounding intensities, to continue limiting their rebounds. I'll start with Johnson at 1 (instead of Granville)
18:41, Up 46-35
Our shooting got cold. I'll shift to Heavy Inside.
11:24, Up 48-39
We are still cold; our outside shots are not falling, and we have difficulty gettting the ball inside due to their 2-3 defense.
7:07, Up 58-49
Granville fouled out immediately, after playing only 2 mins to give Johnson some rest. Switching back to Favor Inside.
Realizing our offense is having an off day today, we will rely on defense for the rest of the game. Increasing def intensity to 9, and switch to 1-2-2 zone defense. Increased Press frequency to 10.
3:03, Up 62-56
They clawed their way back, and I called time out to stop their momentum.
2:40, Still 62-56
Coulibaly missed a J, they rebound, and we were called with another foul. We're now on penalty. 1-1 situation
Hits both. Up 62-58
I put in Majerus for Griffin, for offensive purposes.
Cook settled for an outside. Miss again. They rebound. Cook has not scored since around the 15 minute mark in the first half
They turned it over.
2:07, Up 62-58.
We turned it over as well, and they hit us on the break. I called another time out. We led by as many as 21 back in the 1st half, and is now down to 2!
1:44, Up 62-60
Coulibaly is exhausted, and has not rested in the 2nd half due to Granville's quick exit. I'll give him a quick rest, putting in Smith. It's a tall line up we have there (1G, 4F). I called for a pick and roll between Carr and Cook
Carr missed a jumper. They rebound
They turned it over for the 19th time in this game.
1:15, Up 62-60
I didn't call time out, but shouted to them to slow things down
Another missed J, this time by Majerus. They rebound. They called a time out
0:54, Up 62-60
They got a shot attempt inside the paint. Majerus blocks the shot. They recover. Shoots again. Another block by Majerus! We recover the ball. Brought the ball to the front court. I called time out.
0:27 Up 62-60
We don't need to score. Their main problem now is that they are not yet still in the penalty. Brought back Coulibaly, for ball handling and later on, FT shooting. We'll run a 5-out set
They foul, but only their 4th as a team. 0:23 left.
Another foul (5th). 0:22
6th team foul. 0:17. The game clock is agonizingly slow, at least from my perspective
They foul Smith. Penalty. 1-1 situation. Smith is 3-3 from the line so far
Hits the first. Hits the second. Clutch FT shooting! Now, it's a 2 possession game. They called a time out
0:14, Up 64-60
We'll continue to play 1-2-2. We can give up an inside basket, as long as don't give up a foul
They elected for a 2-pt basket. But only 0:02 left. We quickly ran away with the ball, and they didn't had the chance to foul us
Final score: Sam Houston St - 64, Texas San Antonio - 62
A gritty and ugly road win. Another poor 2nd half performance for us.

Other Notes
1. We got outscored in the 2nd half 22-37. If not for their 19 turn overs, we would have most likely lost this game.
2. We won, but our most glaring weakness got exposed today, esp in the 2nd half. They clamped down on our inside play by going mostly on 2-3 zone. Compounding the problem is the fact that we can't hit outside shots during the 2nd half. I am sure our future opponents will review this game over and over again.
3. ISR = 1.0 (same amount of inside and outside pts)
