At #24 Auburn, 5-2. A definite challenge! They have an excellent C.
12/5: Once again we controlled the 1st half. Went in up 29-23.
It all fell apart in the 2nd. We scored 17 points on 25% shooting. It ended 46-51. When you give up 51 you should win. 17 for Chang, 11, 2, 4 for Will and almost nothing from anyone else except for Raher’s 8, 3, 2.
-6 RB, 16 TOs (but they had 20), 33-37% shooting. Just awful. We need to do something about the 2nd half fade.
Giving more time to Raher and Rein and taking some from Carth. Burke is out for another month with the broken finger.
At 5-2 Fresno State next. We’ve been working hard. Hope to see some results. Their strength is outside but they aren’t good with the ball.
12/12: Thought we were in trouble. Down as much as 12 early. We raised the D level to 8 and fought back. Down 21-24 at the half. No O again.
We spent halftime talking about moving without the ball, making good, crisp passes, back door cuts, driving to the hoop…
It worked. 21 in the 1st half, 42 in the 2nd. We built the lead to 9 at 5:14, and won 63-58. We NEEDED a win and we got one. 20, 7, 1, 3 for Alex, 14, 4, 2, 2 for Chang. Bean, Will and Raher played well but Raher got hurt late.
-5 RB but only 10 TOs (they had 23!). 41-47% shooting, which wasn’t good.
Fouls were 10-15 and we made 6 more free throws so I guess that was the difference.
Raher hurt a knee and he’s out for about a week and a half. We’ll need to give Rein more minutes, and Carth will get more as well.
Last preconf. game is with 3-5 Butler, here. One good win but losses to some very good teams. They’ve played a tough schedule. They have some injuries.
12/19: Not a good first half. We played little to no D, and we picked up lots of fouls doing it. 35-43 at the break.
We talked about D and how to play it without fouling, which we’ve worked on at every single practice since I got here.
We played a little better in the 2nd but we could never quite catch up, 70-75 at the end. Rex Alex was outplayed by a C who was not at his level, Pete Will fouled out. He did get 20, 3, 5, and 3 but he wasn’t there for the last 3 minutes, when he might have made a difference.
-2, +6, 38-48% (the lack of D again), 18 fouls to 11. A very frustrating game.
Dad and I stayed and talked until very late. Nothing to do but focus on winning the conference. At least that’s the conclusion we reach.
