Game #13 (Court Buddies Game #1)

Postby PointGuard » Sat Jun 01, 2013 1:11 am

Game #13: Dec. 26, 2014; CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners (10-2) at Wyoming Cowboys (7-4)

Wyoming shoots well from outside and has 3 players averaging in double figures. Our defense will have to rock solid if we are to have a chance.

My players took the floor in their ‘Court Buddies’. While Nike has it’s “swoosh” logo, my players say the Court Buddies have a “sploosh” logo since it looks like the resulting splash of a brick having been thrown into the water. Before the pre-game warm-ups were over, the Wyoming players were pointing at our players’ feet, then getting close to see what we were wearing. The derogatory remarks from the Cowboys are almost non-stop. My players glare at the Cowboys’ players but remain quiet.

The Cowboys’ hooting and our players’ burning ears and silence were replaced by our team simply stomping on the Cowboys at the beginning of the game. We came out guns a-blazin’, hitting shots from all over the court and hawking Wyoming every time they had the ball. We built a 17 point lead and finished the half with a 41-28 lead. We hit 59% of our shots and held Wyoming to 30% shooting. We forced the Cowboys to make 10 turnovers and out-rebounded them 19-12. Ali Lyde was particularly aggressive, scoring 11 points and hauling down 7 rebounds.

The Cowboys began to whittle down our lead in the 2nd half as we made far too many turnovers. Wyoming cut our lead to 61-60, but we refused to yield the lead. The Cowboys’ home crowd got into the game, forcing me to use up my time outs. With us leading 68-66 with 21 seconds to play, the Cowboys brought the ball up court and called timeout to set up a play. But on the ensuing play, Marcus Evans stole a pass and flew down the court to dunk a shot that nailed the game for us in the win column.

Final Score: CSU Bakersfield-70, Wyoming-66. CSU Bakersfield season record: 11-2.

Scoring leaders: Lyde-19, Durham-11, Evans-10, Bryson-9.

Rebound leaders: Lyde-10.

Assist leaders: Durham-8.

Player of the Game: PF Ali Lyde-19 pts, 10 reb, 1 assist.

Coach’s Pat on the Back Award: PG Randy Durham-11 pts, 3 reb, 8 assists, 1 steal, 1 block.

Other notes: We hit 52% of our shots while Wyoming could knock down only 37% of theirs. The Cowboys spirited play in the 2nd half nearly erased our rebounding advantage (33-31) and gave them a 19-16 turnover advantage. In addition they scored 5 more points than we did at the line. But we scored 34 points in the paint to the Cowboys’s 10 plus we scored 18 fast break points to Wyoming’s 8. The Cowboys swarmed Jerell Brown, keeping the ball out of his hands and limiting him to a career low 5 points.

I was disappointed that our next four opponents had scouts at the game, since I was hoping that more teams would make fun of our shoes so our players would turn their jeering into a big lead for us. But I’m sure the scouts noticed what happened in this game and will ensure no one gets on our players about the appearance of our shoes.

I've talked to the distributor, and he has assured me that he can get those shoes for you in hot pink if you like.

Yeah, that might get the opponents to continue trash talking us before games! :D

Well, if they can't stop laughing, you certainly would have them at a disadvantage!

Player analysis after pre-conference schedule

Postby PointGuard » Sun Jun 02, 2013 3:22 am

Point Guard:

We’re much stronger at PG this year than in previous years with Randy Durham creating points with his pin-point passes, heads up play and strong leadership. Darius Dunn and Michael Curry have been effective, particularly from a scoring standpoint, when they’ve come into the game.

Randy Durham: 23.8 mpg, 9.8 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 5.8 apg, 0.6 spg, 0.8 bpg, 2.4 A/TO
Darius Dunn: 13.6 mpg, 5.6 ppg, 1.2 rpg, 2.2 apg, 0.4 spg, 0.3 bpg, 1.4 A/TO
Michael Curry: 5.3 mpg, 1.8 ppg, 0.6 rpg, 1.1 apg, 0.2 spg, 0.0 bpg, 1.5 A/TO

Shooting Guard:

Jerell Brown’s scoring is down from last year since we now have more offensive threats and he is playing fewer minutes per game. But he is dishing out more assists, turning over the ball less, and playing stronger defense as demonstrated by his bpg. Marcus Evans has played well as his back up and has also started half of our games at SF. He is hitting 46% of his FG attempts (and an equal percentage of his 3 point shots). He needs to improve his defense, though. Alexander Forney has shot extremely well in limited appearances so will likely get more minutes as the season progresses, particularly if he can decrease his turnovers.

Jerell Brown: 27.8 mpg, 16.1 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 1.6 apg, 1.1 spg, 1.7 bpg, 1.0 A/TO
Marcus Evans: 23.3mpg, 10.5 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 1.1 apg, 0.7 spg, 0.0 bpg, 0.7 A/TO
Alexander Forney: 5.4 mpg, 2.4 ppg, 1.1 rpg, 0.1 apg, 0.1 spg, 0.2 bpg, 0.3 A/TO

Small Forward:

Isaac Bryson began the season as our starting SF, but has normally be replaced by Marcus Evans as a starter due to Evans more productive offense. But Bryson is strong defensively than Evans. Ammer Self has played little and has yet to show enough ability to justify increased playing time.

Isaac Bryson: 18.2 mpg, 4.5 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 0.9 apg, 0.7 spg, 0.2 bpg, 0.7 A/TO
Ammer Self: 4.8 mpg, 0.5 ppg, 1.3 rpg, 0.3 apg, 0.0 spg, 0.0 bpg, 2.0 A/TO

Power Forward:

Ali Lyde continues to be a strong presence inside, scoring and rebounding well and defending well. Mitchell Jarmond has played well at times but has been inconsistent. C.J. Galloway and Terrance WIatre have not played much, but each has had a couple good games.

Ali Lyde: 25.9 mpg, 10.2 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 1.8 apg, 0.8 spg, 0.4 bpg, 2.3 A/TO
Michael Jarmond: 9.5 mpg, 1.8 ppg, 1.8 rpg, 0.5 apg, 0.3 spg, 0.2 bpg, 1.2 A/TO
C.J. Galloway: 3.8 mpg, 0.8 ppg, 0.8 rpg, 0.3 apg, 0.0 spg, 0.0 bpg, 0.7 A/TO
Terrance Wiatre: 2.5 mpg, 1.0 ppg, 0.6 rpg, 0.3 apg, 0.1 spg, 0.0 bpg, 2.0 A/TO

Center:

Mark Saunders has started all games and has had a few good games, but also some games where he almost disappears. Marcelle Pastner has played well as Saunders’ primary relief, shooting and scoring better but not rebounding as well. Josh Brown has played a limited amount of time and has yet to assert himself.

Mark Saunders: 19.9 mpg, 4.6 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 0.8 apg, 1.0 spg, 0.5 bpg, 1.7 A/TO
Marcelle Pastner: 12.9 mpg, 5.1 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 1.2 apg, 0.7 sgp, 0.5 bpg, 3.8 A/TO
Josh Brown: 5.6 mpg, 0.7 ppg, 1.0 rpg, 0.2 apg, 0.2 spg, 0.1 bpg, 1.5 A/TO

CSU Bakersfield Team Summary after pre-conference games

Postby PointGuard » Sun Jun 02, 2013 3:26 am

We’re scoring 72.8 ppg (34th best in the nation), and we've allowed just 58.5 ppg (17th best in the nation).

Rebounding has been a strength. We’ve pulled down 35.2 rpg (29th best in the nation) and our opponents have only been able to grab 30.7 rpg (157th best in the nation).

Three other areas of strength are blocks where we are averaging 2.9 bpg (50th best in the nation) while sustaining just 1.5 bpg against us (42nd fewest blocks in the nation), steals...we have been getting 6.7 spg (89th best in the nation) while allowing our opponents only 3.7 spg (the fewest spg allowed in the nation), and assists (we have made 17.2 apg which is 9th best in the nation) while holding our opponents to 12.2 apg (16th fewest in the nation).

We’re unbeaten at home (7-0) and are 4-2 on the road. Our overall 11-2 record has yielded us an RPI that is 31st best in the country.
