Getting ready

Postby Wayne23 » Sat Jun 15, 2013 5:38 am

5/1: Dad is staying for another week. Cutting a few guys who will never help us. They’re all either getting hardship or academic scholarships.

We’ll buy the National Gold. It will leave us a little tight for $ but I think we’ll be okay.

6/5: Looking at transfers and consulting with dad via phone, Skype, email, FB message... He still knows the talent better than anyone I know of.
Fortunately no one flew our coop.

6/12: Got two who look good.

6/26: Jones picked #33, Skif #34, Herr #38, Price #43, Fenn #45, Robb #48 in the pro draft.

It begins. 5 scholarships. Looking at 16.

7/11: We run kid camps, as always. Since it’s our first year the attendance is decent but not outstanding. The big thing is to see what my team looks like.

7/25: And my team looks like it needs work. I expected it to take a year or two and it will. The two transfers who need to sit out the year will be a huge help next year.

8/14: Next week it gets serious.

8/21: We make our offers. One guy seems very interested. The others only a little.

9/11: Home visits seem to go well. We’ll see.

9/18: Got One! #34 PF Nate Qual says yes. Some of the others seem close.
We have a schedule. Two ranked teams on the road but mostly 2 ½ star teams. We aren’t ready for stiff competition.

9/25: Got another one, #49 PG Mick Wing.

10/2: And another one, #30 SG Shag Stin.
First day of practice. We don’t have as much talent as I like but I will teach these guys to play hard.
We’re picked to finish fourth. I would be more than happy with that and equally surprised!

10/9: #37 C Carl Smith commits. One more to go.

Exhibition games and a great start to the season

Postby Wayne23 » Sun Jun 16, 2013 1:53 am

11/3: First exhibition is against Longwood. 30-42 at the half. Not encouraging against a pretty weak team.

Huge comeback, 78-76. -1, -2, 50-43%. John, Call, Carr, Davis played pretty well.

11/8: 2nd exhibition is against Longwood.
40-30 at the half, much different 1st half from last game.

75-58. +7, -3, 53-35%. Hart, Davis, Sloan, Minn, Pink played especially well.

Decision time. Going to stay with Hart at PG, John at SF, Gant at PF, Call at C but switching to Carr at SG and giving Davis LOTS of minutes up front. The rest will share minutes until they play themselves in or out. Vann and Pink are the odd men out for now but that too could change.

Ready to start- I hope! Creighton, from the Missouri Valley Conf. is in first.

They’re a higher rated team from a lower rated conf., so let’s see what happens.

11/15: 31-28 at the half.

We’re rebounding well. Ball handling isn’t so great (10 TOs).

Good 2nd half, 69-59.

+7, -2, 47-39%.

Davis has got to start, 14, 10, 1. 16, 3 for Carr, 12, 3, 2 for Hart but 7 TOs and 4 fouls. He and Call were in foul trouble for most of the game.

Clemson, 1-0, is in.

11/18: 36-35 at the half.

11 TOs and we gave up 5 threes. We talk about crisp passes, moving without the ball, and getting a hand in the shooter’s face.

And we do all three, 78-55. Great 2nd half!

+7, +5 (5 TOs in the 2nd), 57-43% (gave up 1 three in the 2nd).

17, 6, 1 for Carr, 16, 6 for Davis, 14, 6, 3, 2 for Call, 8, 2, 12 for Hart, 9, 4, 1 for John.

Seriously thinking of starting Davis for Gant. Hm. I talk it over with my terrific staff and with dad. We decide to give him starter’s minutes but we won’t actually start him. It’s the old sixth man theory of having a really good player come off the bench so that you don’t have a drop of quality when subbing. Still learning the team so other changes may well happen as we go.

3-1 Florida State is in. Tough inside.

11/22: 39-32 at the half.

Scoring easily but not taking care of the ball and letting their bench do a lot of damage.

We don’t let them get closer than 5 in the 2nd and win it 69-59.

+5, +1 (17 TOs), 47-42%, fouls 10-18.

17, 2, 4, 2 for Carr, 16, 6, 1 for Davis, 16, 2, 2 for Hart, 13, 8 for Call. We’re not getting much from anyone else and I don’t think we will.

2 good games then a really bad one

Postby Wayne23 » Sun Jun 16, 2013 4:46 am

At 1-1 Wake Forest. They haven’t played well but they look like a really good team on paper, and 1 and 3 are very tough. This is our biggest challenge so far.

11/25: 18-41 at the half.

We did nothing right. Davis had foul trouble on D and was stifled on O. Awful half.

Complete reversal, 42-19 in the 2nd and it’s OT. We scored the last 8 in regulation, dominated the boards, couldn’t miss in the last 5 minutes and shut them down. Our back court was on fire.

At the break I tell the guys to feed the guards.

It works, we score the first 9 on 3 threes. They come back but can’t catch us, 72-69. Good win over a tough team.
-2, even (18 TOs, TOs are our biggest problem, along with lack of depth), 40-42%, fouls were 18-6 which nearly did us in.

32, 3, 7 for Hart, 25, 1, 2, 1 for Carr. 8, 6 for Call. They focused on stopping Davis and did, he was scoreless, but he had 9 RBs. We got a total of 3 points from the bench which does not bode well for the future.

11/27: Nick Barber, #35 C, signs. Got 5. We may make some moves at the end of the season, we’ll see. Great draft and 2 outstanding transfers. Watch out for us next year!

2-3 Western Kentucky is in.
Some outside strength.

11/29: 40-33 at the half.

Hart played 3 minutes due to fouls. Wolk played 5 as his back up PG, due to getting in foul trouble. I had to go with two guys who don’t play much, and they did well. Fortunately the other guys had as much foul trouble as we did. Refs were whistle happy. I got a T and so did the W. KY coach.

Our bench saved us, 83-72. Refs stayed whistle happy. Hart played 10 min. before fouling out, and his back up Wolk played 18. Minn and Sloan got it done.

+13, -6 (15 TOs), 52-39%, fouls were 21-19 and again, the other guys had even more foul trouble than we did, 2 starters and a sub fouling out. Our 1st 2nd PGs fouled out.

18, 6, 1, 1 for Call, 16, 9 for Davis who was back on track, 11, 4 for John in his best game so far, 10, 2, 1 for Wolk, 6, 4, 3 for Minn, 5, 2, 1 for Sloan so some real help from guys who don’t play much.

This team has exceeded my expectations so far.

At 3-3 St. John’s. 2 bad losses, 1 good win.
Not deep but they have some talent.

12/2: 19-34 at the half.

As badly as we’ve played all year. Turning it over, not rebounding, standing around on both ends. I get pretty loud.

We play them even in the 2nd, never get it to single digits, 49-64. A real step backward.

-18 (!), -3 (18 TOs), 41-44%.

18, 1, 1, 1 for Call, 6, 6, 2 for Davis, 5, 3, 6 for Hart but 6 TOs. No one else did much of anything.

I’m hoping it was simply an off night but we’ll work hard in practice.

7-2

Postby Wayne23 » Mon Jun 17, 2013 2:24 am

1-4 Weber State is in. They really haven’t played well.

12/6: 43-25 at the half.

Way better than last game. The back court is really playing well, 3 TOs.

The 2nd is even and they never get close, 79-63.

Even, +6 (5 TOs!), 44-43%.

25, 2, 2 for Carr, 16, 5, 6 for Hart, 17, 3 for PG Wolk from the bench, 4, 8, 3 for Davis, the only big guy to do much.

At 5-2 Georgetown. They’ve played two good teams and been blown out by both, but they play good D and they’re good outside. This will be another challenge.

12/9: 27-32 at the half.

We aren’t hitting the boards and we’re standing around too much. I stay calm and try to teach instead.

Nope, didn’t work, 51-63. I guess we can beat everyone except the Big East. D wasn’t bad but we didn’t generate enough O and we didn’t rebound.

-12, +2, 32-38%.

13, 7 for Call, 8, 6, 2, 1 for John, 4, 13, 1, 1, 2 for Davis, 9, 2, 1 for Wolk. We aren’t getting much from Gant and Carr is inconsistent.

We discuss changes. We aren’t rebounding for one thing. I decide to go small, Wolk will start for Gant. I will play 6 guys most of the time. Let’s see what happens. We probably aren’t through tweaking yet.

#24, 5-4 Gonzaga is in. On paper they are WAY better than we are. They’ve played a very tough schedule. 6th man is hurt. We’ll need to play really well to have a chance.

12/13: 33-34 at the half.

Hanging with them. 11 TOs and 5 threes, otherwise we’re doing fine. Working on it.

In the 2nd 5 TOs, and we give up only 2 threes and it makes all the difference, 65-59. Great win!

+3, -6, 36-37%, fouls were 10-18, and that was huge.

20, 5, 3, 1 for Carr, 14, 6, 5, 1 for Hart, 14, 5, 2 for Call, 10, 11, 1 for Davis.

7-2 with 2 to play before conf. play starts.

9-2 heading into conf. play

Postby Wayne23 » Mon Jun 17, 2013 2:57 am

At 7-3 Purdue. 2 good wins, 1 bad loss. Tough inside but not good with the ball.

12/16: 33-30 at the half.

Hart gets in early foul trouble but we hang in. Giving up 9 threes really hurts. I’m all over the guys about that.

Hart only plays 13 min. due to fouls but we only give up 3 threes in the 2nd, 81-69.

-2, -1, 52-38%. Great shooting wins this one.

15, 7, 1, 1 for Call, 18, 2, 2 for Carr, 16, 7, for Davis, 10, 4, 9, 2 for John.

I decide to start Davis. He’s been getting starter’s minutes anyway. John will sit, but will get the most minutes from the bench. Hopefully this is the last major change.

At 5-5 Boise State.
Up and down vs. a weak sched. Some bad losses but the D has been decent. Sloppy.

12/20: 26-41 at the half.

Didn’t show up, 7 threes, 10 TOs, -5 rebounding. I try the silent treatment, take the coaches into the visiting coach’s office and stay there until it’s time to start the 2nd half. These guys have heard it too often. Time for them to wake up on their own.

And they do, we give up 1 three, commit 5 TOs, and are +8 RB. 73-66.

+3, -5, 51-43%, fouls are 11-18.

18, 3, 4 for Hart, 14, 8, 1, 1 for Davis, 14, 4, 1 for Wolk, 13, 2, 2 for Call.

9-2 in the pre-conf., RPI #16, which is great. I don’t think we’ll do nearly this well in conf., the league is TOUGH this year.

TOUGH conf.!

Postby Wayne23 » Wed Jun 19, 2013 4:28 am

At #16, 8-5 UCLA to start. They played a very tough sched. and lost only to ranked teams. This will be our biggest challenge so far.

12/30: 20-25 at halftime.

Where’s the O? 12 TOs and 10 fouls.

More of the same, 51-61.

-5, -12 (20 TOs), 39-37%, 17-9 fouls. We were overmatched but we need to play better than this.

15, 9, 1 for Davis, 12, 4, 5, 1 for Hart but 9 TOs, 8, 7, 3 for Carr.

1/1: Happy 2022. 3-9, 0-1 Utah is in.
They’re having a tough season, several bad losses and no quality wins.

1/3: 30-33 at the half.

Nothing’s going to be easy in this conference. Their bench is killing us, we’re holding their starters.

19 lead changes, 12 ties. Down 2, :48. We bring it down and throw it away.

They bring it down, Hart steals, throws out to Carr who takes it in ahead of the field and dunks. Tied, :14.

We steal the in bounds pass and they foul Davis with :04 left. He hits the front of the 1 and 1, misses the 2nd. We tip the RB. They get it but can’t get a shot off. 72-71.

+8, -4, 41-42%.

16, 10, 1 for Davis, 15, 6, 1, 1 for Carr, 16, 1, 3, 1 for Hart, 9, 5, 1 for John from the bench.

At #3 in the country Arizona, 14-2, 1-1. Lost their last to USC in a shocker. Only other loss was to #1 FL. I hope we can be competitive.

1/6: 32-33 at the half.

We’re hanging in with one of the best teams in the nation.

We can’t stay with them in the 2nd, good D but 15 TOs, and we shoot 22%. 47-62 at the end.

-7, -8, 35-39%.

15, 5, 3 for Hart but 7 TOs. 9, 7, 1, 2 for Davis, 8, 4, 1 for Call, 6, 6 for Carr, 5, 6 for John. We need to generate more O but I’m not sure it’s going to happen with this team. Can’t WAIT for next year when we’ll have some actual talent.

3-3 in conf., struggling for every win

Postby Wayne23 » Wed Jun 19, 2013 4:51 am

8-6, 3-0 USC is in. They have 4 bad losses but they’re hot right now. Starting SF flunked off the team. Probably their bets player but they haven’t lost since he left, even beating AZ. Go figure! We think we’re the better team if we play well.

1/10: 35-36 at the half.

We’re doing lots of things well but they have 8 threes.

We stop the 3 and Davis goes crazy, 82-67.

+10, +2, 57-40%.

36, 10 for Davis, 12, 5, 2, 1, 1 for Call, 17, 3, 5, no TOs for Hart, 8, 5, 5, 1 for John who has been playing great ball since he isn’t starting.

At 7-8, 0-4 Washington State. Great start to their season but they’ve lost 6 in a row. Strength is outside. Road wins are tough in this league and we’d like to get one here.

1/13: Great 1st half, 46-23.

Making shots, rebounding, taking care of the ball, playing D.

None of the above in the 2nd, 64-73. I don’t understand how we could fall apart so completely.

+5, -6 (but only 12 TOs), 37-47% (They shot 61% in the 2nd).

15, 8, 2 for Carr, 18 for Wolk, 8, 13 for Davis. The D was nonexistent in the 2nd and we couldn’t make a shot.

Dad says it’s simply going to be a long season. I need to stay positive with the guys but there just isn’t enough talent. Next year we’ll be tough, there are at least 6 guys coming in who can definitely play.

8-8, 3-2 California is in. They can turn it over and we need to exploit that but this won’t be easy, not many will be.

1/15: 36-42 at the half.

D isn’t there. At the half I challenge my guys to play strong D.

It works! 79-71.

+11, -1, 47-48%, fouls were 9-21 which was the diff, along with the rebounding.

20, 5, 6, 3 for Carr, 17, 9, 1, 1 for Call, 15, 3, 2, 1 for Wolk, 9, 11, 2 for Davis. Hart fouled out, which has been par for the course lately.

We’re 3-3 in the conf., 12-5 overall.
