Jess Wynn, to do the impossible

A couple of wins and a loss

Postby Wayne23 » Sun Jun 23, 2013 1:48 pm

At 0-4 Texas next. This kind of game always scares me. A good program on a bad streak but at home. DANGER!!! They’ve lost to four ranked teams. This team is too good, especially up front, to keep playing this way. We’ll need to be sharp.

12/9: 23-21 at the half.

At least we’re playing good D. We’re also rebounding. But we’re missing shots (33%) and we’re sloppy (11 TOs).

Better in the 2nd but not a lot. They stay close all the way, even lead a couple of times. We go on a late run and go up 13 with 3:44 left. They rally but can only get it to 4, 58-54. We escaped.

+17, -4, 39-41%, fouls were 9-17 so we won at the line yet again. D was better but I like to keep opponent shooting pct. Below 40% so still some work to do.

13, 14, 1, 2 for Qual, 16, 4, 6, 3, 6 for Tark who’s leading the nation in blocked shots (go figure, he’s a PG), 8, 12, 2 for Young, 11, 2, 2 for Asp, 8, 1, 2 for Lowe.

#15, RPI #2.

At 4-1 Gonzaga.
Lost to Hawaii in their last but 2 good wins, and they’re at home. Their SF, best player, tore his ACL in their last game.

12/13: 28-36 at the half.

Not playing well, D is a step slow, we’re sloppy. I stay calm and try to fix it at the half.

Total fail. As bad as we’ve played all season, 52-65. Couldn’t make shots, we stayed sloppy. D was better in the 2nd but that’s all that was.

+6, -3, 35-48%.

11, 5, 7, 1, 3 for Tark, 11, 9, 1, 2 for Qual, 13 for Layt.

Maybe this team isn’t as good as I thought they were. Either that or we haven’t jelled yet. Dad and I, as well as the rest of the staff, discuss it for several hours after we get home. Our problems are led by poor shooting (a woeful .417%), and poor ball handling (more TOs than assists). Much as I complain about the D we’re only giving up 60.5 per. Hopefully a four game home stand will help but the 4th is with #1 in the country UCLA.

6-3 Texas A & M is in. They lose to the good teams and give up points doing so. PG and C are their best players but we’re the better team if we play. We’ve been working hard in practice.

12/16: 32-20 at the half.

Great D! We rebound and make shots, and we take care of the ball.

A good 2nd half too, 70-50.

+15, +1, 46-33% (!).

16, 5 for Lowe, 12, 8, 6, 1, 1 for Tark, 6, 13, 3, 2 for Asp, 9, 7, 3, 1, 1 for Young.

#18, RPI #2.

10-4 going to conference

Postby Wayne23 » Sun Jun 23, 2013 2:24 pm

Minnesota, 7-3, is in. One bad loss. Only impressive win was in 1st game of season.
12/20: 32-28 at the half.

Doing most things well but these guys are hanging right in.

They chip away, take a late lead and hang on, 58-61. Another frustrating loss.

+4, +3, 37-38%, fouls 10-15. Every # good except the score.

21 for Lowe, 7, 2, 10, 1, 6 for Tark, 10, 6, 1, 1 for Asp, 6, 9, 1 for Qual, 6. 8 for Sigg. A game we should NOT have lost.

Nick Barr hurt his leg, out about a week but he doesn’t play much.

Our last pre-conf. game is with Miami, 3-7, here. I WANT a win, and I WANT us to play well. Tough sched., 2 bad losses no quality wins.

12/23: 23-24 at the half.

So frustrated I’m biting my own forehead. We’re not making shots.

The D is great in the 2nd but the O is what it’s been, lousy. 54-45.

NOT the effort I was looking for. Maybe I just need to have these guys spend all their time working on their shot. That’s the biggest problem right now.

+7, even (12 TOs), 34-27%.

17, 8, 3, 2, 5 for Tark but 7 TOs, 10, 17, 2 for Young, great game, 6, 9, 2 for Qual, 13, 4 for Layt.

Lowe hurt his back but he shouldn’t miss any games.

10-4 for the pre-conf. season.

What a start to conf. play!

Postby Wayne23 » Mon Jun 24, 2013 3:22 am

#2, 12-1 UCLA is in. One of their 2-3 best players, their C, flunked off the team, but they’re deep. This is a tough team.

12/30: 31-20 at the half.

I couldn’t ask for more from my guys. We’re turning it over but they’re turning it over much more. We’re playing great D, holding them to 25%. Partly they’re just missing but we have a hand in the shooter’s face every time and we aren’t letting them get it inside.

Unbelievably, we hold them to 7 points in the 2nd half, 59-27. Unbelievable is the only word that fits. They made 1 two, 1 three and 2 free throws, 9.5% from the floor.

+12, +7, 46-18%.

21, 5, 6, 1, 6 for Tark, 19, 11, 4 for Asp. This was a once in a lifetime experience. I’m sure I’ll never see anything like it again.

#19, RPI #4.

At 2-10, 0-1 Utah. This is not a very good team, to say the least.

1/3: 32-29 at the half.

Their bench is hurting us and we’re a little sloppy. We talk about how to fix it.

A little better in the 2nd, 67-57.

+9, +1, 38-41%, fouls were 8-25 so another win from the line.

15, 9, 4, 1, 5 for Tark, 14, 18, 5, 1, 1 for Asp, 14, 5, 1 for Young. Not happy letting them shoot 41% but it’s a win.

Another challenge, with #8, 12-3, 2-0 Arizona in. They’ve won 7 in a row and 10 of 11. Starting C flunked off the team. Tough inside but not as tough as they were. These guys are the real thing and we’ll need to be on our game.

1/6: 28-17 at the half.

Terrific D against a really good team, and we’re controlling the boards.

We build it to 15 then suddenly stop doing the things that were working. They chip away at the lead and get it to 2 with 1:37 left.

They bring it down, take an open 10 footer which misses. We get the RB bring it down and they foul. Tark hits the 1st, misses the 2nd they RB and call a TO. Up 3, 1:08.

They hit a 3 to tie, :50. We bring it down, chew some clock, miss a 12 footer. They RB call time, :25.

They bring it down, work it and get a lay up. Down 2, :09.

We bring it down, can’t get it inside. Lowe takes a 3 at the buzzer and it goes in, 58-57. What a game!

+18, -3, 36-38%, fouls were 10-18. We made 14 of 22 free throws they made 5 of 7.

16, 5, 7, 3, 7 for Tark, 10, 12, 1, 2 for Young, 9, 8, 2 for Asp, 6, 8, 3, 1 for Qual, 10 for Lowe including the game winner.

We beat #2 and #8 within a week!
Maybe we’ve finally jelled. Dad has been a huge help as always. He says shooting will probably remain a weakness with this team but we’re working on the other things that were holding us back.

#15, #5.

Playing great ball

Postby Wayne23 » Mon Jun 24, 2013 4:10 am

At 9-5, 2-1 USC. They’ve had trouble with the good teams. They don’t play great D and don’t have a go to guy.

1/10: 38-25 at the half.

Controlling the boards but really sloppy, 13 TOs. We talk about crisp passes.

Excellent 2nd half, 80-46. 5 TOs.

+21, -2, 58-34%, fouls were 7-15.

22, 5, 12, 1, 4 for Tark, 14, 11 for Asp, 16, 1, 1, 1 for Lowe, 8, 14, 3, 1 for Young. We’re playing great ball right now.

Jerr Lowe has a bronchitis attack but he should be okay. He misses a day of practice.

4-11, 1-3 Washington State is in. Starting SG flunked off the team and they weren’t very good when they had him.

1/13: 39-20 at the half.

In total control.

72-47.
Never a game.

+13, +5, 44-30%.

16, 8, 4, 1 for Asp, 17, 5, 2 for Qual, 10, 9 for Young, 15, 3, 1, 2 for Lowe, 6, 5, 11, 4 blocks for Tark who still leads the country in blocks and is 2nd in assists.

#12, RPI #8.

At 4-12, 1-4 California. Just beat Colorado after losing the previous 8. Two guards out with injuries so they’re thin.

1/17: 51-29 at the half.

We can’t miss and neither can they (64%) but they aren’t getting many shots because we’re owning the boards and turning them over.

80-57 at the end. Never a game.

+14, +11, 53-60% (but they took only 40 shots).

16, 2, 12, 1, 2 for Tark, 18, 7, 3, 1 for Young, 14, 6, 4, 3 for Asp, 12, 1, 1 for Lowe, 5, 7 for Qual.

We’re rolling along. Tied for 1st with Oregon, only UCLA is one back. 16-4, 6-0.

Still playing great

Postby Wayne23 » Mon Jun 24, 2013 4:37 am

1-16, 0-6 Colorado is in. They’ve lost 15 in a row. As if things weren’t bad enough their starting C flunked off the team.

1/20: 35-28 at the half.

They’re playing way above their heads due to making 8 threes for almost all of their points. I’m all over my guys about playing D and getting out on the shooter.

Much better in the 2nd, 76-48. We still give up 4 additional threes. 39 of their 48 came on threes.

+14, +9, 48-36%, fouls were 7-21.

12, 2, 15, 3, 3 for Tark, 16, 9, 1 for Young, 16, 8, 1, 1, 1 for Asp, 15, 2, 1 for Lowe, 11, 6, 1, 1 for Qual.

UCLA lost to fall 2 games back.

#10, #10.

The showdown for first, at #11, 15-5, 7-0 Oregon. 7 straight wins. All 5 losses were to top 25 teams, 4 to top 10. These guys can play. They are especially strong inside but solid at all 5 spots.

1/24: 35-33 at the half.

It’s a battle. 10 TOs and we’re letting them work the ball for open shots. I diagram some changes in our D and tell the guys to make good passes.

The first 10 min. of the 2nd are close then we go on a 12-0 run and hang on to win 75-63.

+12, -2 (3 TOs in the 2nd), 42-38%.

21, 3, 1 for Lowe, 18, 3, 4 with 6 blocks for Tark, 11, 9, 5 for Asp, 6, 19, 2, 1, 1 for Young, 13, 6, 1, 1, 1 for Qual. All 5 starters were terrific.

We’re alone in 1st.

10-10, 4-4 Oregon State is in.
Lost their last 3, one quality win.

1/27: 40-28 at the half.

Giving up threes again- 5. All by the PG who’s having a great game.

Tark takes over and stops their PG, 75-45.

+8, +9, 53-34%.

19, 5, 2, 3, 1 for Lowe, 14, 5, 13, 1, 7 but 7 TOs for Tark (5 TOs in the 1st), 9, 8, 3, 1 for Asp, 11 for Layt.

#10, RPI #7, 19-4, 9-0.

Two on the Norton List, Brad Tark is #4, Josh Asp #18, Sid Young #25.

Tough times

Postby Wayne23 » Mon Jun 24, 2013 2:42 pm

At #24, 14-6, 5-4 Stanford. They’ve struggled in conf., but won their last 3, beating both UCLA and Arizona. Their 2 and 3 are terrific, we’ll need to contain them, especially from long range. They are weak at PG and we’ll need to exploit that. This could be a very tough game.

1/31: 29-25 at the half.

It’s a real battle. They’re turning us over and making us foul, and we aren’t getting open looks.

We stop the 2 but not the 3 and we don’t do enough of the things our game plan called for, especially on O, 50-55. You can’t win scoring 50.

+9, even (16 TOs), 39-47% (Highest % we’ve allowed in a long time).

16, 8, 2, 1 for Asp, 10, 5, 8, 1, 5 for Tark but 8 TOs, 8, 11 for Young, 10 for Layt. We should win when we give up 55 but the O wasn’t there against a good defensive team on the road.

11-10, 4-6 Arizona State is in.
4 losses in a row. 2 bigs out.

2/3: 42-16 at the half.

Complete domination. Lowe picked up 2 quick fouls but Layt played big in his place.

More of the same, 73-32.

+21, even, 51-21%.

19, 3, 1, 3, 1 for Layt, 10, 7, 13, 7 blocks for Tark, 6, 14 for Young, 13, 2, 1 for Lowe in only 8 min.

#10, RPI #8.

The sched. gets tougher, UCLA and Arizona, both away, in the next 3 games.

At #5, 20-4, 8-3 UCLA.
We crushed them last time and I’m sure they’ll be seeking revenge. They’ve struggled against good teams but they haven’t lost at home all season. They do most things well. Their back court is not all that strong so we need to work that. We’re expecting a very tough game.

2/7: 14-29 at the half.

Well that’s about as bad as we can play. Couldn’t make a shot, 11 TOs, slow on D. I kick butts and try to fix it.

We played much better in the 2nd but not enough, 48-57.

+8, -7, 30-39%, fouls were 17-9.

14, 7, 4 for Asp, 8, 16, 1, 1, 2 for Young, Tark was ineffective.

Work to be done.

Up and down

Postby Wayne23 » Mon Jun 24, 2013 8:38 pm

4-19, 2-10 Utah is in. We won by 10 there.

2/10: 25-19 at the half.

The weak O continues. I work on some things at the half- mostly the ones we’ve been working on in practice. NOT happy.

Much better, we score 40 in the 2nd, 65-39. Great D.

+7, +5, 44-27%, fouls 7-25.

14, 6, 3 for Asp, 15, 3, 1 for Lowe, 13, 6, 7, 1, 7 for Tark, 9, 7 for Qual.
Oregon lost so we’re tied for 1st again with UCLA one back. If it stays this way we’d wear the whites all the way.

#Still #10, #8.

Tark is #4 on the Norton List, Asp #17.

At #14, 19-7, 9-4 Arizona.
Won their last 5. They have some holes but they’re strong. Another real challenge.

2/14: 29-40.

No D at all and we’re throwing the ball away regularly. A big hole to climb out of.

Not even close, 55-67. The O was not there and the D wasn’t a lot better.

+13, -3, 31-39% (Can’t win shooting 31%).

15, 4, 1, 3 for Lowe, 13, 4, 6, 2, 2 for Tark, 7, 9, 1, 1 for Qual, 6, 9, 1, 1 for Sigg.

Tied for 2nd with UCLA which means we’d be the #3 seed in the tourney.

21-7, 11-13 with 2 to play.

End of regular season- 23-7, 13-3, tied for 1st

Postby Wayne23 » Mon Jun 24, 2013 9:07 pm

Home finale vs. 16-9, 9-5 USC. We won by 34 there. 7-2 in their last 9. We’re the better team but we need to play that way. We also need some help to move up in the standings.

2/17: 29-25 at the half.

I remind the guys that there’s a lot at stake. Biggest problem is sloppy play.
We own the 2nd, 33-14. Final is 62-39. When we play D we’re hard to beat.

+14, -2, 48-29%.

20, 2, 1, 1 for Lowe, 14, 5, 7, 2, 4 for Tark but 6 TOs, 10, 7, 2, 2, 1 for Ash, 8, 8, 1, 3, 2 for Qual, 10 RBs for Young.

#10, RPI #9.

We finish at 8-18, 5-10 Washington State.
We won by 25 at home. They’ve lost 4 of 5. If we play we’ll be fine. This is a must win if there’s any chance for us to move up.

3 way tie for 1st with one to play.

2/21: 40-25 at the half.

Playing like we mean it. Their SG is doing some damage but no one else is.

In charge, 75-49.

+11, +7 (6 TOs), 48-36%, fouls 10-20.

23, 3, 9, 3 blocks for Tark, 13, 2, 3 for Layt, 11, 3, 1, 1, 1 for Qual, 7, 9, 2, 1 for Young, 4, 11, 3, 3, 1 for Asp, 7, 6, 2 for Sigg.

Oregon and UCLA both won so it’s a 3 way tie. Not sure of the seeding but I think we’re #3 which would make it rough.

Still #10, #9.

Tark leads the nation in blocks, 2nd in assists, #4 on the Norton List. Hell of a player!
