I prefer the Diamond and 4.

Actually when I coached in the real world I would often have my first unit practice against a 6 person defense. I wouldn't tell them I was doing it ahead of time, I'd just throw another kid out and have him double the ball.

Yeah, a lot of coaches do that too to help prepare for trapping pressure

The Pac 12 tourney

Postby Wayne23 » Tue Jun 25, 2013 1:43 pm

I’ll be, we got the #1 seed. I’ll take it! We play #9 seed Arizona State,

13-15, 5-11, first. Beat them by 41.

3/10: 33-12 at the half.

Can’t complain about the D!

54-30.
We stifled them all the way.

+6, +3, 44-20(!)%.

16, 9, 3 for Asp, 8, 7 for Young. The only low was 7 TOs for Tark.

All the favorites advanced so it’s #22 ranked, 21-7, 11-5 Stanford, a tough team. We lost by 5 there. There SF ran wild and we didn’t take care of the ball. We know what to work on. They are 10-1 in the last 11. We’d love to get to the title game.

3/11: 36-22 at the half.

We’re playing great D and playing well overall. The SF has 9 but we can live with that since no one else is doing much for them.

A good 2nd and we win 64-46. D was excellent.

+1, +8 (forced 22 TOs), 48-35%.

11, 3, 7, 3, 4 for Tark who had a great game on D as well, 12, 2 for Asp, 9, 6, 2, 5, 1 for Qual, 9, 2, 2, 1 for Lowe, 6, 4, 2, 4 for Young.

We need this kind of defensive effort tomorrow.

It’s #12, 23-8, 13-3 Oregon for the title. They beat UCLA by 2 in OT. It was a very tough, physical game and we can hope they’re tired. They beat us by 12 there. They’re a balanced team and they do most things well. We’ll need to be at the top of our form.

3/12: 27-36 at the half.

12 TOs and soft D. I chew them out then tell them how to fix it. I also tell them we can win this game.

We go down 14 with 14:44 left. I burn my 3rd time out and everything changes from then on.

We narrow the gap slowly but surely and take our first lead at 2:03, 56-55.

We outscore them 8-2 down the stretch to win 64-57. A great win for the Pac 12 title!

+11, -8 (but only 5 TOs in the 2nd), 44-35%, fouls were 9-14.

22, 2 for Lowe, 17, 13, 1 for Ash, 9, 4, 9, 1, 6 for Tark, 7, 6, 1 for Young.

Seems like the Pac 12 title has to be good for a 1 or 2 seed. We’re about to find out.

26-7, 13-3, #10, RPI #8.

NCAA 1st 2 rounds

Postby Wayne23 » Tue Jun 25, 2013 2:15 pm

Selection: Not in the East.

#2 in the Midwest, we play 23-7 Lipscomb. Kentucky is #1, Florida #3. I’ll take this draw.

3/14: USC won, Oregon State lost in the NCAA play in round.

Lipscomb is 23-7, 10-4, won the conf., and the tourney. They played a very weak schedule.

3/16: 31-15 at the half.

Great D!

We stretch the lead to 21 then I empty the bench. The final is 56-43 but it wasn’t that close.

-1, +11, 36-35%.

18, 10, 1, 2 for Asp, 10, 4, 7, 1, 4 for Tark, 11 for Lowe, 8, 5, 1, 1 for Young, Qual had 8 RBs.

Oregon and Stanford also won their NCAA games.

3/17: Arizona, USC, UCLA all won their NCAA games.

#10 seed, 17-12, 9-7 North Carolina upset Minn.
So we’ll play them. Not the typical UNC team, they give up points for one thing, and they never really jelled as a team. We need to contain their back court though, they can light it up.

3/18: 31-36 at the half.

Their SG is killing us and we are not rebounding. Shooting 33%. Not good. I try to address all of the problems but I’m not even finished when the knock at the door for the 2nd half comes. Only down 5 but it feels like we’re in trouble.

And we were. They built the lead to 11 with 6:44 left.

I called my next to last TO and did everything I could.

It got better but not enough, 59-64 at the end.

-5, +2, 37-46%. Their SG got 30 and 9.

11, 11, 3, 2 for Young. No one else did much and as a team we didn’t do nearly enough.

The bright side is that we aren’t losing anyone and we have some good kids coming in.

End of the season

Postby Wayne23 » Tue Jun 25, 2013 5:06 pm

3/20: Arizona, Oregon, UCLA all in the Sweet 16.

3/23: Oregon loses to UConn.

3/24: Arizona and UCLA both lose.

Final Four will be #2 UConn vs. #1 KY, and #4 MD vs. #3 ILL, so the top 4 teams made it. I’ll be there with dad again. Would I move? It would take a hell of an offer.

4/1: KY vs. MD for the title.

4/3: KY by 18.

I talked to a lot of A.D.s from some pretty good schools.

4/4: Awards: Brad Tark is conf. POY and 1st team, Josh Asp makes 2nd. That’s it.

4/9: No offers interesting enough to explore.

4/16: Two vacancies. I hire top notch guys. Great staff!

4/23: I ask for $. Got $11,000.

My #’s are: Off. 38, Def. 58, Recruit 66, Scout 8, Player Development 48,
Reputation 43. Record is 247-75, .767. Pretty good! Oh, I got a $7,000 raise.

New season coming up and with everyone coming back I’m expecting great things.

Getting ready

Postby Wayne23 » Wed Jun 26, 2013 4:29 am

5/1: Preseason #23. We buy the National Gold.

6/5: No open spots for transfers.

6/25: Got a little extra money so we’re going to the national and Vegas camps.

6/26: Here we go, 10 to fill. That’s a TALL order! Looking at 18, 5 PG, 3 SG, 1 SF, 5 PF, 4 C.

Nobody drafted by the pros, since everyone is back.

7/11: Our kid camps start. We’re sold out for both weeks.

7/25: Some terrific kids that we’ll be going after in the future. My team looks really good. I’m excited about the year. A LONG time until we even start to practice. The guys are on campus and working but I can’t be part of it.

Quite a few recruits showing at least some interest but 10 scholarships!

8/7: Brad Turk is #3, Josh Asp #19, Sid Young #38 on the first Norton List.

8/21: We offer to 5 smalls and 5 bigs.

9/4: Visits next week but 10 schollies and only 4 visits.

9/11: 4 visits. Wish I could visit the other 6.

9/18: Lost one. We have a sched. Going to the Sunshine Shootout. At least 5 ranked teams, all on the road.

9/25: Got 2, lost 2. Got #32 PG Dave Marr and #56 PG Irv Dark.

10/2: Got 1, lost 2. We aren’t getting any bigs. Landed #39 SG Joel John.

1st day of practice is finally here.

We are picked to finish 2nd behind Arizona. The conf. is very strong again this year.

10/9: Got Len Bosl #52 C. So we have 5, 2 bigs, 3 guards, and we’re going after a guard and a big. Time to widen the search.

10/23: Wow! We’re #4 in one of the preseason polls.

Exhibitions then 2 road wins

Postby Wayne23 » Thu Jun 27, 2013 4:48 am

11/2: First exhibition game is vs. Utah Valley. 32-13 at the half.

Great, Barr fouls out. Played 10 min. 60-35. +15, +5, 43-30%.

11/7: 2nd exhibition game is vs. Utah Valley. 39-21 at the half.

75-55. +12, +3, 39-38%. Fouls 13-18. Whole starting 5 plus Barr played really well.

Changes: I move Sigg way up the depth chart. That’s about it. We have depth!

We start at Mississippi in the SEC.
Not much to go on.

11/15: 33-23 at the half.

All 5 starters hitting shots and playing D.

More of the same, 68-44.

+16, +7, 37-30%, fouls 5-18.

15, 12, 2, 2 for Asp, 15, 4, 8, 1, 4 for Tark, 14, 8, 3 for Lowe, 9, 10, 1 for Qual, 6, 7, 5, 2 for Qual. Wyck and Sigg played well from the bench.
Hope this is a sign of things to come because we looked great tonight.

At #16, 1-0 Wake Forest. Very good starting 5 and these guys can play. This should be a challenge.

11/18: 40-36 at halftime.

Doubling their 2 and stopping him but the PG is lighting us up. Their rebounding with us and we’re throwing the ball away too often. We also need to stop the 3.

We stretch the lead out to 15. They try to cut it and get it to 4 three times but no closer. The final is 68-60.

+3, -7 (18 TOs), 48-38%.

15, 4, 2 for Lowe, 11, 1, 7, 1, 3 for Tark, 7, 7, 1 for Asp, but the bench won this one- 14, 1, 1, 1 for Wyck, 7, 6, 2 for Sigg, 4, 3, 2 for Layt, 27, 13, 6 to 17, 8, 4.

11/20: #16.

At 1-1 Virginia next.
They have talent, especially outside, and their C can RB.

11/22: 33-33 at the half. They’re hangin’ right with us. We aren’t hitting shot sand we aren’t in the faces of their outside shooters.

Now we are, 65-49. Held them to 16 in the 2nd.

+8, +10, 37-46%, fouls 9-16.

25, 2, 2, 3, 1 for Lowe, 12, 7, 1, 1 for Asp, 9, 2, 6, 3, 4 for Tark, 8, 12, 1, 1 for Qual.

Finally headed home, for 4 games.

Still winning

Postby Wayne23 » Fri Jun 28, 2013 7:36 pm

4-1 New Mexico is in. Lost to Stanford then beat #5 North Carolina, which is now #16. Pretty solid inside game but the guards are weak.

12/6: 25-17.

Great D but not much O. We are missing shots- lots of shots 25% shooting, and not rebounding.

We get outplayed in the 2nd but hang on to win 51-47. They scored the last 4 points so we were never really in danger.

-3, +13, 32-41%. Just a really bad shooting night.

15, 6, 5, 3, 3 for Tark, 16, 4, 1, 4 for Lowe, 7, 8, 3, 4 for Young. Nothing from the bench. Still, it’s a win.

Heading for the Sunshine Shootout.
