Game #16

Postby randy » Fri Nov 22, 2013 3:44 am

1/17/02: Arizona (10-5, 4-2) @ #16 USC (13-2, 5-1)

Scouting Report
  1. Primary defense: M2M
  2. Offense focus: Balanced
  3. Key Player: Sr SG Marcus Leib (10.7 ppg, 2-time All Conf)

Tip off (1st Half)

15:32, Up 7-2
Sloppy start for both teams' 7 combined turn overs

7:59, Up 22-12
Hard to imagine that we're leading by 10, given our 9 turn overs.

3:54, Up 24-13

Halftime, Up 31-25

Highlights
  • We played excellent defense, until the last couple of minutes of the 1st half when they were able to put up some pts on transition. We allowed ARIZ to shoot only 32% FG, 9 turn overs. Almost half of ARIZ's output came from the FT line, going 12-18 FT, no thanks to the 14 fouls called against us.
  • Our FG shooting is decent at 46%, but we can't get enough attempts due to our 11 turn overs

    Adjustments
    • Defense: Use m2m exclusively
    • Off intensity: Lower to 5

    Start of 2nd Half

    15:32, Up 42-30
SF Sam Millar starting to heat up again, 14 pts, 6-9 FG

    11:52, Up 48-34

    7:54, Up 55-41
Turn overs continue to pile up on use (17), which is keeping ARIZ at a striking distance. We go to 2-3 zone bec of foul trouble of our big men

    3:53, Up 62-44
    We'll slow down the game

    Final score: Arizona - 52, USC - 66

    Notes
    1. Our defense was good today, limiting ARIZ to 33% FG and forcing 17 turn overs. More importantly, ARIZ only scored 3 2nd chance pts, which further limited their scoring options
    2. C C Hasheem Bailey able to step in nicely, and made for the sub par performance of our starting big men. SF Anthony Bryant and PG Antonio Parker also chipped in for much needed scoring support
    3. We need to take care of the ball better. 21 turn overs, 10 coming from our point guards

Game #17

Postby randy » Fri Nov 22, 2013 5:00 am

1/20/02: Utah (7-10, 1-6) @ #16 USC (14-2, 6-1)

Scouting Report
  1. Primary defense: M2M
  2. Offense focus: Balanced

Tip off (1st Half)

15:51, Up 6-2
UTAH 0-5 FG

11:53, Up 15-6

7:50, Up 21-9

3:35, Up 32-16
I was given a T earlier, for complaining on successive fouls called. UTAH had a mini 5-0 run to cut our lead to 7, 21-14. The T may have fired up the players, and we go on a 11-2 run of our own. SG Kaniel Coley connected on 2 treys on that run, to the delight of the crowd

Halftime, Up 40-20

Highlights
  • We put up a good shooting performance, 54% FG, including 5 3s - 4 coming from SG Kaniel Coley. We also cut down on our turn overs (3).
  • We didn't let up on defense, forcing 13 UTAH turn overs, and shooting just 29% FG

    Adjustments
    • None

    Start of 2nd Half

    15:44, Up 44-25

    11:42, Up 53-32
After an error-free 1st half, PG Antonio Parker committed 4 turn overs already in the 2nd half; I immediately yanked him out of the floor. SG Kaniel Coley had just hit his 5th trey

    6:41, Up 61-42

    3:46, Up 66-44

    Final score: Utah - 52, USC - 70

    Notes
    1. We had 11 steals out of UTAH's 22 turn overs, helping us score 14 fast break pts. We did allow UTAH 11 off rebounds, but they only got 8 2nd chance pts our of those extra opportunities
    2. Our 3-man post players rotation all helped in getting us 34 pts in the paint today. Also, good to see SG Kaniel Coley regaining his stroke from the outside

Game #18

Postby randy » Fri Nov 22, 2013 6:34 am

1/24/02: #15 USC (15-2, 7-1) @ UCLA (8-9, 4-4)

Scouting Report
  1. Primary defense: M2M
  2. Offense focus: Balanced (fast)
  3. Previous meetings
    • 12/27/01 (Home): Won 75-63; UCLA's starting guards scored 36 pts combined

Tip off (1st Half)

We'll double both of their guards

15:40, Down 6-10

11:46, Down 11-18
UCLA's SG Jared Johnson 9 pts, 3-5 3PT. We'll shift to 1-2-2

7:51, Down 14-26
UCLA 6-10 3PT. We'll go exclusive m2m defense

3:44, Down 23-32
We cut the lead down to 5, 23-28, after SG Kaniel Coley's 3rd trey. UCLA scored 4 FTs after that

Halftime, Down 29-48

Highlights
  • UCLA's shooting difficult to contain, despite the different types of defenses we employ; they are now 8-14 3PT. The 11 fouls called on us just compounded our problems, allowing UCLA to score 12-16 FT.
  • Only C Antonio Forney (11 pts) and SG Kaniel Coley (12 pts) gave us something significant on offense.
Adjustments
  • Defense sets: Use m2m defense exclusively
  • Offense pace: 10

Start of 2nd Half

15:44, Down 38-61

11:50, Down 48-65
Closest we got in trimming the deficit was at 15

9:59, Down 57-65
After cutting down the deficit to 14, SF Sam Millar and SG Kaniel Coley both hits a 3. Down to 8. UCLA sensing an uprising, called a timeout

7:12, Down 59-75
They hit 2 FTs, and then a 3. We get a FG, and then we got called on a succession of fouls. I already got a T in the 1st half. We shift to balanced offense

3:50, Down 67-85
More long range shots connecting for UCLA. They played extremely well today

We lose our 2nd straight road game. 6 of our next 9 games are on the road. This season is going to be a tight race in the Pac 12

Final score: USC - 75, UCLA - 92

Box Score
Coley 24, 3, 2, 8-13 3PT
Forney 21, 7, 2, 2 stls
Millar 9, 3, 1, 3 tos

Notes
  1. It didn't mattered that UCLA had 16 turn overs. With that kind of a shooting performance, which included 14-22 3PT, they are very hard to beat. And for good measure, they added 24-28 FT
  2. Efficient shooting from SG Kaniel Coley, but he and C Antonio Forney were not enough to match up with UCLA's offensive performance today

Pac 12 Conference Standings

Game #19

Postby randy » Fri Nov 22, 2013 7:46 am

Oregon's 3-time Conf POY SG Frank Perry is gone. Oregon is returning only 1 starter from last year's team. And yet, they still manage to win despite a "rebuilding" year. Goes to show they have one of the better basketball program in the Pac 12.

1/24/02: #15 USC (15-3, 7-2) @ Oregon (12-8, 5-4)

Scouting Report
  1. Primary defense: M2M
  2. Offense focus: Outside

Tip off (1st Half)

14:33, Up 8-4

11:27, Up 8-6
Both teams shooting less than 30% FG, and combined 11 turn overs.

7:41, Up 14-10
At this rate, 40 pts might be enough to get a win

3:43, Up 22-15
C Antonio Forney's 12 pts almost equaling the entire output of OR

It was 22-13 earlier. OR had a rally, going on a 12-0 run to get a 3-pt lead. SG Kaniel Coley ended the half with his 1st trey of the game

Halftime, Tied at 25

Highlights
  • Both teams almost identical in all stats. We converted 3 more FTs, and OR had 1 more 3pt shot; so it just cancels out
  • In this type of game, every possession counts, so we need to cut down on our turn overs in the 2nd half
Adjustments
  • Defense sets: Use 1-2-2

Start of 2nd Half

15:24, Up 37-33
We go called for a foul twice in the 1st minute. I had to lower def intensity, as this game might be decided by FTs

11:24, Up 44-38
C Antonio Forney with a double-double, 18 pts, 12 rebs.

5:01, Up 59-44
Our lead was trimmed down to 4 after a score by OR, 44-30. We then went on a 15-4 run, by forcing OR to a succession of turn overs, and dominating the off glass. All these happened with C Antonio Forney resting in the bench

We'll slow down the game, and eat some clock

Final score: USC - 66, Oregon - 54

Box Score
Forney 20, 13, 0, 2 stls (*)
Dare 13, 4, 1, 3 stls, 2 blks

REB: +10
AST: -4

Notes
  1. We did a better job handling the ball in the 2nd half, with only 4 turn overs; we finished the game with 15 total
  2. We won the rebounding battle, and shot well from the FT line 19-21 FT. Those were enough to hack out this win.

Game #20

Postby randy » Fri Nov 22, 2013 9:00 am

1/31/02: California (6-13, 3-7) @ #17 USC (16-3, 8-2)

Scouting Report
  1. Primary defense: M2M
  2. Offense focus: Balanced

Tip off (1st Half)

15:48, Down 8-11
CAL with a good start, 5-7 FG

11:49, Tied at 16
C Antonio Forney 14 pts, 6-6 FG

7:48, Up 23-18

4:43, Up 28-22

Halftime, Up 39-34

Highlights
  • CAL was able to score 16 pts in the paint, which was not far from the 24 we scored. All other stats were equal.
  • We had a total of 7 turn overs, but 3 of those came early in the game, all on PG Antonio Parker. At this point in the season, I am trusting more on his backup, PG Shea Wheat to be on the floor during end games
Adjustments
  • Defense sets: Use 2-3

Start of 2nd Half

14:10, Up 51-41
C Antonio Forney scored 6 of our 1st 12 pts of the 2nd half, bringing his total to 20 pts

7:10, Up 68-50

Final score: California - 53, USC - 85

Notes
  1. The defensive adjustments at halftime proved wonders, as CAL has zero pts in the paint in the 2nd half, after scoring 16 in the 1st. Their outside shooting, 6-29 3PT, did not merit enough for us to change from a 2-3 zone defense
  2. Almost a double-double from SG Kaniel Coley. This kid continues to surprise a lot of people. He may be an option I can use at times, to play the 1 spot

Arizona St is 5-0 at home, in conference play

2/3/02: #17 USC (17-3, 9-2) @ Arizona St (10-10, 6-5)

Scouting Report
  1. Primary defense: M2M
  2. Offense focus: Balanced (fast)

Tip off (1st Half)

15:32, Down 4-9

11:43, Down 6-14
A very tough start for us, 2-10 FG, 4 turn overs

7:39, Down 12-27
AZST shooting the lights out, 64% FG

Halftime, Down 23-44

Highlights
  • None of our defensive schemes worked effectively against AZST's offense; they shot 58% FG
  • We won some games before where we shot less than 40% FG. But having 13 turn overs at the 1st half won't give us a chance
Adjustments
  • Defense sets: Use 1-2-2
  • Offense focus: Balanced

We just need to cut into this lead 1 possession at a time

Start of 2nd Half

17:44, Down 32-44
We scored 9 straight to start the 2nd half

We get a steal. Fast break. SF Sam Millar slams it down on the break

AZST miss. SF Anthony Bryant with the ball. Bryant driving strong. Bryant scores a tough shot in traffic plus a foul! Bryant hits the bonus FT. Timeout AZST. We sliced a 21-pt deficit to only 7, in a span of 3 mins

17:00, Down 37-44

Teams trading turn overs. On our next possession, SF Sam Millar puts drains a bucket. A 16-0 run!

15:53, Down 39-44

Teams traded baskets and split FTs

11:56, Down 46-52

AZST goes on a 6-0 run. We get 4 straight. And then a dagger 3 by AZST!

7:52, Down 50-61

We couldn't hit shots afterwards. SG Kaniel Coley is 0-7 3PT so far. AZST hit some shots, and the lead ballooned again to 16

5:29, Down 52-68

We get an inside bucket from C Elliott Dare. After an AZST miss, SG Kaniel Coley hits his 1st 3, after missing his previous 7 attempts. Down 11. Teams traded baskets afterwards

An AZST miss. SF Anthony Bryant drives. Miss. Gets fouled. 2 FTs. Media timeout

3:19, Down 61-70

We go with a small lineup. Balanced offense. Max pace

SF Anthony Bryant drops 2 FTs. Down 7.

AZST miss. We go to C Antonio Forney at the post. Forney powers his way in. Forney scores. Down 5

AZST with a clutch basket. Down 7 again

We go to SG Kaniel Coley. Without hesitation, Coley shoots from downtown. SWISH. Down 4

AZST miss. We go to Coley again. Coley fakes a 3. Goes closer. Coley with a pull up jumper. Coley rattles one home! A couple of minutes ago, Coley was scoreless. He has 8 pts now.

2:01, Down 70-72

AZST goes to the post. Miss. We go again to Coley. Coley surveys the defense. Coley makes a pass. Turn over!

AZST punished us with that lost opportunity by hitting aFG. Down 4. We dribbled front court. Timeout

1:03, Down 70-74

We'll go for 3 for Coley

Coley put one up. Miss. We get the off rebound. Follow up C Antonio Forney. Miss. But a foul was called. 2 FTs

Forney missed both! Down 4, 0:48

AZST turns it over. 0:41. 2 possession game

Coley missed again. We foul intentionally ... twice since we're not in penalty. AZST missed their FTs, but not enough time for us anymore

Highlights
  • We got high-percentage shots majority of time; 24 pts in the paint, 10 fast break pts, and even our outside shot were fallin. All of these result to 71% FG shooting in the 1st half. We could have scored 60 if not for our 8 turn overs
  • C Antonio Forney (16), SF Sam Millar (10), and SG Kaniel Coley (12) all have double-figure scoring
  • Our defense was also good, forcing STAN to 12 turn overs and 33% FG. The only positive on STAN's offense was their 4-8 3PT.

Notes
  1. It is somehow ironic that we played our best 20-minute (1st half) offensive performance, and our worst 20-minute (2nd half) ball handling performance, in the same game. We had a mind-numbing 16 turn overs in the 2nd half

Pac 12 Conference Standings
  1. #17 USC, 10-3 (W1)
  2. Arizona, 9-4 (W1)
  3. Colorado, 9-4 (W2)

Game #23

Postby randy » Fri Nov 22, 2013 11:11 pm

2/10/02: Washington (9-13, 5-8) @ #17 USC (18-4, 10-3)

Scouting Report
  1. Primary defense: M2M
  2. Offense focus: Balanced (fast)
  3. Previous meetings
    • 1/3/02 (Away): Won 65-48
Injury
  • Antonio Parker (sprained finger, 76%, 6 days); won't play, PG Shea Wheat to start

Tip off (1st Half)

15:54, Up 10-0

11:54, Up 19-4

7:54, Up 31-8
We are scorching on the field again, 75% FG

3:53, Up 37-13
Even seldom-used SG Malik Owes is perfect from the field, 10 pts, 5-5 FG

Halftime, Up 45-22

Highlights
  • WASH improved their shooting towards the end of the half, but it didn't matter as we continued to play our efficient half-court offense - 30 pts in the paint, 62% FG, and only 1 turn over
Adjustments
  • Defense sets: Use 1-2-2 defense exclusively

Start of 2nd Half

15:46, Up 50-31
WASH opened up their scoring in the 2nd half with 3 treys

11:24, Up 58-35

7:58, Up 64-35

4:31, Up 72-40
After their good 2nd half start, WASH's offense has gone relatively quiet. More playing time for the bench today. As a reward, even our PG walk on will get to see action for the 1st time this season today

Final score: Washington - 48, USC - 81

Box Score
Forney 20, 7, 3, 2 stls (*)
Owes 15, 1, 2, 7-8 FG
Dare 14, 5, 1, 2 stls
Bailey 12, 5, 1, 6-7 FG
Bryant 7, 4, 1
Wilden 5, 1, 0
Millar 4, 6, 3
Coley 3, 3, 7, 1-6 3PT
Perry 1, 2, 0
Wheat 0, 1, 3, 2 stls
Rein 0, 0, 0

REB: +15
AST: +10
TO: -11
Paint: +36
2nd Chance : +5
Fast Break: +10
Notes
  1. Inside scoring is still our main source on offense (52 pts); if we do that together with taking care of the ball (only 4 turn overs) and passing the ball well (21 assists), then our offense becomes very potent.
  2. Surprise performance from 2 bench players - SG Malik Owes, and PF Hasheem Bailey

Pac 12 Conference Standings

  2. Arizona, 10-4 (W2)

Game #24

Postby randy » Sat Nov 23, 2013 12:35 am

2/14/02: #16 USC (19-4, 11-3) @ Oregon St (8-15, 6-8)

Scouting Report
  1. Primary defense: M2M
  2. Offense focus: Balanced (slow)
  3. Previous meetings
    • 1/6/02 (Home): Won 66-60
Injury
  • Antonio Parker (sprained finger, 91%, 2 days); won't play, PG Shea Wheat to start

Tip off (1st Half)

15:30, Up 12-6
Our offense started strong again, for the 3rd consecutive game

11:45, Up 21-11

7:40, Up 27-14

3:49, Up 35-22

Halftime, Up 39-28

Highlights
  • Despite committing 11 turn overs, ORST managing to hang around with their 50% shooting. ORST also shot 3-9 3PT
  • We shot slightly lower FG% (46%) compared to ORST, but we are +8 FGA. We didn't get too many inside pts (14), but we did well on the line, 12-12 FT
Adjustments
  • Defense sets: Use 1-2-2 defense exclusively

Start of 2nd Half

15:09, Up 46-34

11:50, Up 50-38
Game is still uncomfortably close, as ORST continues to knock down outside shots.

7:41, Up 63-43

3:51, Up 67-52

Final score: USC - 72, Oregon St - 54

Box Score
Coley 16, 2, 3
Bryant 16, 2, 1
Forney 14, 11, 3, 2 stls (*)
Dare 8, 4, 0
Millar 7, 4, 3, 2 stls
Wheat 4, 2, 3, 3 stls, 3 tos
Bailey 4, 2, 0
Perry 3, 1, 0
Owes 0, 0, 1

REB: +8
AST: +2
TO: -11
Paint: +18
2nd Chance : +10
Fast Break: +10

Notes
  1. Similar story with the 1st half. Despite ORST shooting a little better FG%, by inside scoring (30), rebounding (8 off rebs, 10 2nd chance pts), and making our FTs (21-23 FT), we can still win big.
