Finding ways to win

Game #62

Postby randy » Wed Oct 22, 2014 11:07 am

Mar 3, 2002: (5) Mississippi Valley St (18-11, 8-8) vs (1) #19 Alabama St (24-4, 15-1)

Pregame Notes
  • We beat MVST in our only game this season (83-66 road win), in which our 2 freshmen (SG Drew Walker and C Robbie Wise) combined for 36 pts
  • MVST's leading scorer, Sr SG Anthony Crawford (14.6 ppg), suffered a sprained ankle during their last game, and is not sure if he's going to play today (75%)

Tip off

It turns out that MVST's SG Anthony Crawford won't be able to play today. But there is no reason to be confident. It's always dangerous to face a team that have their backs against the wall.

We were in for an early surprise, as MVST's big men bullying their way against our soft defense. I reminded my players during the timeout that we lost in last year's conference semifinals, and we don't want to repeat that again.
12:53, Down 11-15

We even went down by as high as 9 pts, 11-20. We have to thank SG Drew Walker, who is shooting 5-6 3PT already, for bringing us back in this game.
5:39, Up 28-24

MVST was not done, coming up with a 6-0 to reclaim the lead. The remainder of the 1st half was purely a fight for survival on our side, just to keep ourselves ahead (including a buzzer-beating 3 by PG Johnny Victor)

Halftime, Up 42-38
With or without their leading scorer, MVST is a good offensive team. We can't let this high-scoring game to continue, and then let MVST steal this game in the end with some crazy outside sniping.

Start of 2nd half

MVST must playing too fast for their own good, as they started taking quick, ill-advised shots. But this is no time to relax, as an 11-pt margin can also be erased quickly by MVST
11:25, Up 64-53

Scoring has slowed down for both teams. MVST still within striking distance
7:40, Up 68-58

We got ourselves into penalty. MVST came to within 8 pts. We scored 5 straight pts, but MVST still resilient.
3:38, Up 75-65

After MVST missed the front end of a 1-1 FT, SG Haven Wilkerson scored 5 unanswered pts to give ourselves a 15 pt lead with less than 2 minutes remaining. We slowed down the pace, and I was glad this game was over.

Final Score: Mississippi Valley St - 69, Alabama St - 86
In the end, MVST wasn't able to match our offense for the full 40 mins

Game #63 - 2002 SWAC Tournament Finals

Postby randy » Wed Oct 22, 2014 2:46 pm

Mar 4, 2002: (11) McNeese St (15-15, 6-10) vs (1) #19 Alabama St (25-4, 15-1)

Pregame Notes
  • As fate would put it, we'll be facing the team that eliminated us in last year's conference tournament. We beat them twice this year (79-72 road win, 74-72 home win), but all that wouldn't matter if we fail to win this game
  • After a forgettable conference regular season, MCNST strung up 3 successive tournament wins by an average margin of 17 pts. MCNST has shot 53% 3PT in those 3 games

Tip off

Both teams shooting well from the outside at the start of the game.
13:31, Up 14-13

We're converting our shots at a consistent rate, but MCNST shooting a scorching 71% FG, including 4-6 3PT. We will increase def intensity.
7:41, Down 25-31

MCNST FG% dropped a bit, but their scoring continues, this time from FT line capitalizing on our penalty situation. MCNST is just making shots from everywhere. We went down by 12, but finished the 1st half on a small 5-0 run.

Halftime, Down 39-46
It's been MCNST's 4 guard rotation doing most of the damage, combining for 36 pts. I have to take a risk here, and increase further our m2m def intensity, and hope we don't get called for lots of fouls just like in the 1st half

Start of 2nd half

SG Haven Wilkerson made a 3 to start the 2nd half, and our deficit trimmed down to 4. However, successive fouls (we have 4 team fouls already) on our part allowed MCNST to score 7 straight and we're staring at a double digit deficit once again. Wilkerson 2 straight FGs. And then we got a 4-pt play (made FG+foul+missed FT+off reb putback)
15:20, Down 50-53

MCNST draining another 3. But we were able to tie the score a few plays later, with a combination of fast break pts and 2nd chance opportunities. We have 5 team fouls, but we're starting to force MCNST into errors. MCNST made their last shot to regain the lead.
11:38, Down 56-58

A close game, as we're trailing only by 2. And then again, MCNST unleashing a barrage of outside shots, and they lead by 10 again. I am very frustrated with the turn of events, and called an early timeout. MCNST is shooting 8-11 3PT today.
8:48, Down 58-68

SG Drew Walker hits a 3. Teams exchanged some misses, and a made FG. And then Walker connecting on another 3. We're knocking on the door once again.
6:29, Down 66-70

MCNST missing a shot, and turned the ball over on their next possession. SG Haven Wilkerson got fouled twice driving to the hoop, and made 3 of 4 FTs.
5:17, Down 69-70

MCNST with another 3, their 9th of the game. We miss a 3. MCNST not wasting time, putting up a quick 3 on their next play, and it goes in again! Timeout. 10-15 3PT shooting for MCNST today.
4:20, Down 69-76

SG Drew Walker getting one back, getting his 5th 3PT shot of the game. We get a steal. Walker fakes a 3, drives, miss, but PF David Andrews got the off rebound, and the putback is good!
3:37, Down 74-76

MCNST finally missing a 3. We went to PF David Andrews on the low post. Andrews shoots, and scores again plus a foul. Prior to his 2 consecutive baskets, Andrews was 1-7 FG. Andrews makes the bonus FT. We take the lead after a long while
3:18, Up 77-76

MCNST: PG Terry Hoyer, who has burned us today with 21 pts, shoots and miss. Hoyer getting the off rebound. They reset. We get a steal.
ALST: SG Haven Wilkerson drives. Wilkerson miss.
MCNST: We get another steal!
2:12, Up 77-76

ALST: I only have 2 timeouts left, due to those 2 I called earlier in the 2nd half to stop MCNST's runs. I elected not to call a timeout. SG Drew Walker gets the ball. Walker cant get a shot. Kickout to PG Johnny Victor. Victor drives. Miss!
MCNST: We're playing good D. They miss. But they grabbed another off rebound, their 13th of the game. They get another opportunity. PG Terry Hoyer shoots. Miss. We finally get the def rebound. Now we need a timeout
1:17, Up 77-76

ALST: SG Drew Walker takes a 3. Miss. Timeout MCNST
0:55, Up 77-76

MCNST: We double team on MCNST's C Adam Carr on the outside. Carr in a bit of a bind because of the double team. PG Johnny Victor takes away the ball. Victor is running the fast break. PF David Andrews on the wing, gets the ball, and slams it home! 7 straight pts for Andrews. Timeout MCNST
0:42, Up 79-76

MCNST puts up a quick shot, perhaps think of a 2-for-1. Miss. We get the rebound. We dribble to the front court. I decided to call my last timeout
0:24, Up 79-76

As expected. MCNST giving up a fouls. They needed 3, to make it to the penalty, and they did. PG Johnny Victor calmly sinks both FTs. Timeout MCNST

We just need 1 more defensive stop. MCNST puts up a 3 against a double team. Miss. We dribble the clock away. Finally this game is over

Final Score: McNeese St - 76, Alabama St - 81
This game had more ups and downs than a roller coaster. Never too late to play good defense, as we somehow shackled MCNST's offense and they went scoreless for the last 4:20.

Game #64 2002 NCAA Round of 64

Postby randy » Thu Oct 23, 2014 3:07 am

Mar 17, 2002: (11) Texas Tech (16-12, 10-6) vs (6) #18 Alabama St (26-4, 15-1)

Pregame Notes
  • Key Players
    1. Jr SF Tyran Ducharme (11.0 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 35% 3PT)
    2. Sr C Donny Crean (8.6 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 58% FG)
  • How they got here
    1. Finished 5th Big 12; Lost in the Big 12 Tournament 1st Round
  • Strengths
    1. Only 13.1 turn overs per game (#3 Big 12)
  • Weaknesses
    1. Sends opponents to the FT line a lot, with a DFTRate of 39.5 (#2 worst in Big 12). In each of their last 2 losses, they sent their opponents to the line 26 times.

Tip off

Both teams with cold shooting on opening minutes. I am more worried about about 3 early turn overs.
15:50, Down 0-3

We're slowly getting our offensive groove back. We have 6 turn overs already, and TT manhandling us on the boards grabbing 7 off rebounds.
7:43, Up 15-14

It didn't matter that TT just shot 32% FG. They are having more opportunities to shoot because of their off rebounding, and the 9 turn overs we had in the 1st half.

Halftime, Up 32-31
We have maxed out our intensity of def rebounding. We'll try to field in a tall lineup as often as possible for the 2nd half.

Start of 2nd half

TT starting to rack up their fouls, and we slowly built a 5 pt lead. But TT able to hit back-to-back 3s, and just like that they are now in the driver's seat.
14:43, Down 40-41

We turn the ball over twice. TT continuing to hit from the outside. I've seen enough. Early timeout. Perhaps the timeout is too late, as we're in a precarious situation now.
10:07, Down 46-55

We increased our def intensity. SG Drew Walker scored 4 straight pts. But Walker called for travelling both in our next two possessions. We have 14 turn overs already as a team. We still trail by 7, before PF David Andrews drained his 1st 3 of the game. A miss by TT. We went back to Andrews again, and he got fouled on the act. Andrews connects on both FTs, and we're back in business.
7:09, Down 55-57

A miss by TT. SG Haven Wilkerson, who just got back in the back, nails a jumper. We're tied. A turn over by TT, and we scored on transition, to retake the lead! We're on a 13-2 run.
7:09, Up 59-57

Teams exchanging baskets and FTs, not allowing the other to lead by more than 2 pts. Both teams in the penalty. Hang on to your seats.
3:53, Up 65-63

TT: Missed a 3.
ALST: We went to C Robbie Wise on the post. Wise shoots, miss, but got fouled. Wise makes both. We're 21-23 (91%) from the FT line so far.
3:21, Up 67-63

TT: C Donnie Crean makes a bad pass. Crean has been a non-factor, 4 pts, 1-6 FG.
ALST: We're going offense/defense substitution. SG Drew Walker drives, and Walker scores!
2:42, Up 69-63

TT: C Donnie Crean able to bully his way inside and scores. Timeout
2:20, Up 69-65

ALST: SG Drew Walker got fouled quickly. Walker hits both FTs.
2:18, Up 71-65

TT: In comes our rebounding and defensive unit. Miss by TT.
ALST: Im trying to save my timeouts (2 left). Dribble drive penetration by SF Terrance Walls. Drops the pass to C Chris Hawkins. Hawkins got fouled. Hawkins splits.
1:46, Up 72-65

TT: Foul caled. TT to shoot 1-1. They made 1. Timeout
1:23, Up 72-66

ALST: SG Drew Walker is back on the floor. Without hesitation, Walker shoots from 3. BANG! That is Walker's 3rd triple of the game, and probably put the nail on the coffin of TT
1:14, Up 75-66

TT exchanged a 3PT shot, but giving up a foul on the other end. Not enough for them

Final Score: Texas Tech - 72, Alabama St - 79
There was a point middle of the 2nd half where TT looks poised to run away and take this game. Our players able to regroup, and played good defense in the end game. It also helped out FT shooting today was spotless, 28 of 31 (90%)

Game #65 - 2002 NCAA Tournament Round of 32

Postby randy » Thu Oct 23, 2014 10:33 am

Mar 19, 2002: (6) #18 Alabama St (27-4, 15-1) vs (3) #14 Arizona (23-9, 14-4)

Pregame Notes
  • Key Players
    1. Fr PF Terrell Crooks (16.0 ppg, 10.5 rpg); #1 class rank
    2. Jr SG JD Brinkley (9.6 ppg, 40% 3PT)
  • How they got here
    1. Finished 1st Pac 12; Won Pac 12 Tournament
  • Strengths
    1. Rebounding: 37.1 rpg (#9 national), DR% is 85.4 (#1 national)
    2. Defense: 55.6 opp ppg (#9 national)
  • Weaknesses
    1. Because ARIZ likes to play a really slow-paced game (#13 slowest national), they average only 61.8 ppg (#318 national). They don't shoot a lot of 3s, and makes 32% of their shots from downtown
  • 2nd year in a row where we meet ARIZ in a post season tournament. We beat them last season in the NIT 2nd round. Some names are familiar like Brinkley, but they hit the jackpot this year with #1-ranked recruit, Crooks.
  • We may be forced to play a lot of 2-3 zone, to contain ARIZ's rebounding strength. We'll roll the dice with their perimeter players like Brinkley, and give them outside shots.

Tip off

Bad news is that SG Haven Wilkerson picked up 2 quick fouls. Good news is that Wilkerson's replacement, SG Drew Walker, scored all of our pts so far, including 4 from beyond the arc.
13:28, Up 14-7

ARIZ is playing exclusively 2-3 zone, giving us the freedom to shoot from long range. 14 of our 18 attempts were from 3, and we're making ARIZ pay by connecting on 9 3PT shots already. We're in the penalty though.
6:35, Up 29-18

We're also executing our defensive game plan. We try to hound and double team their shooters, but the moment they dump to ball to their big men in the low post, we'll collapse in the zone. Sometimes we're late in rotating, but oftentimes it was successful. So far so good in defensing ARIZ's superstar freshman PF Terrell Crooks, just 3 pts, 1-6 FG.

Halftime, Up 36-25
As long as ARIZ keeps using the one, we hope to continue hitting our 3PT shots (10-18 3PT in the 1st half, 7 coming from SG Drew Walker). And we will continue with our "harass and collapse" defense, which we are using extensively for the 1st time this season.

Start of 2nd half

Out outside shooting has soured off in the 2nd half, so far missing our 4 attempts from 3. But we started getting some inside pts also, with C Robbie Wise scoring 6 of his 8 pts in the 2nd half
13:39, Up 44-32

SG Drew Walker regaining his touch from the outside, adding 2 more triple to bring his game total to 9. ARIZ's PF Terrell Crooks and C Dave Bennett have played without relief, and fatigue starting to show as ARIZ relying mostly with their perimeter players on scoring.
7:38, Up 57-43

PG Johnny Victor joins the 3PT party, and gave us our 14th triple of the game, and extend our lead further.
5:20, Up 63-45

ARIZ's very tired starting unit does not have the legs anymore to mount a rally. Our bench warmers finished the game

Final Score: Alabama St - 70, Arizona - 50
Our players did an excellent job in executing of defensive game plan, taking away ARIZ's strengths. ARIZ just 16 pts in the paint today. ARIZ's celebrated freshman, PF Terrell Crooks finished with 5 pts, 7 rebs, 2-10 FG.

Game #66 - 2002 NCAA South Regional Semi Finals (Sweet 16)

Postby randy » Thu Oct 23, 2014 1:51 pm

Mar 24, 2002: (6) #18 Alabama St (28-4, 15-1) vs (2) #8 Gonzaga (30-5, 14-2)

Pregame Notes
  • Key Players (Gonzaga)
    1. So SG Brian Hayes (14.6 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 41% 3PT)
    2. Jr C Victor Prince (9.0 ppg, 8.0 rpg, 2.3 bpg
    3. Fr PG Rashane Perry (11.2 ppg, 4.8 apg, 38% 3PT)
  • How they got here
    1. Finished 1st WCC; Won WCC Tournament
    2. (Round 64) Def Western Illinois, 73-54 (Perry 17 pts, 7 rebs; ZAGA: 21 fast break pts)
    3. (Round 32) Def Pepperdine, 74-61 (SF Jon Knight 18 pts, 6 rebs)
  • Strengths
    1. Scoring: 7 players averaging at least 7.5 ppg; 75.6 ppg (#5 national)
    2. Ball handling: Only 11.9 topg (#7 national)
  • Weaknesses
    1. Probably just an average rebounding team. If we can box put Prince, we'll have a chance of winning the rebounding battle
  • We're both ranked in the top 10 national in terms of fewest turn overs. Whichever team can force more turn overs gets a major advantage in this game
  • ZAGA shoots almost 40% 3PT. Plus they have Prince who can score inside, so that makes them a tough team to defend. Our defensive rotation should be very quick.

Tip off

SG Haven Wilkerson scored all of our pts so far. Issue we are having on defense is that ZAGA's big men are skilled enough to either shoot from medium range, or take their defender off the dribble. So we can't really just instruct our players to just collapse on the shaded area every time ZAGA's big men get the ball.
13:42, Tied at 12

SG Drew Walker's shooting off so far, 1-4 FG. We're getting a feel of ZAGA's depth, as their offense not really dropping off even with their 2nd unit.
7:31, Down 22-24

ZAGA's ball movement just too quick for our defense to react. The moment we collapse on the lane to prevent an inside basket, they can quickly kick out for an open 3 (ZAGA is 4-9 3PT).

Halftime, Down 34-37
We haven't had a consistent scorer other than SG Haven Wilkerson. But considering that SG Drew Walker and PF David Andrews have combined for only 3 pts, and we're down by just 3, we're still in a good position to snatch this game. We have done a good job so far on the defensive glass, allowing only 1 offensive rebound for ZAGA

Start of 2nd half

ZAGA got off to a quick 10-0 start, including a couple of 3PT shots. I was contemplating on playing purely 2-3 zone to neutralize their penetrations, but clearly, ZAGA has shown they can score in a variety of ways.
15:54, Down 36-50

Our deficit grew to 18. After a long time not getting our shots to fall, we finally were able to hit a couple of 3s. But ZAGA's Victor Prince (17 pts) beginning to dominate the inside. I have to take a risk here, and go 2-3 zone all the way and hope their outside shots won't fall.
11:40, Down 44-59

PF David Andrews gets his 1st pts of the game on an offensive put back. After an unsuccessful possession by ZAGA, Andrews makes a 3. Another miss by ZAGA. Andrews already feeling it, shoots another 3, and scores again! An 8-pt explosion from Andrews.
10:03, Down 52-59

ZAGA finally able to break our zone and scores a 3. But I an encouraging my players to just stick with our plan. It's still a long way to go
7:36, Down 56-64

ZAGA hits 2 more 3s in the last minute to go up on double digits once again. We have a small lineup ( 4 shooters) on the floor, to generate more offense. We'll also favor more outside shots.
4:25, Down 62-72

We cut it down to 8. ZAGA with another 3. Sg Drew Walker gets it back, hitting a 3 also. But ZAGA answers back once again, with a triple. I have no choice but to switch to m2m defense
3:07, Down 67-78

ZAGA gets another FG, to up their lead to 13. We got a 3 to fall. After a ZAGA miss, we scored on inside. Deficit down to single digits (8). Another unsuccessful possession by ZAGA. We had a chance to cut down our deficit to 6 (or possibly 5), but we turned the ball over on a bad pass. Such a crucial turn over.
1:20, Down 72-80

ZAGA's C Victor Prince shoots from the low post. Miss. Prince getting the off rebound. Prince shoots again, but he got blocked. but Prince recovers the ball again, and his 3rd serving is good this time. Prince is a handful for us today.

We started taking 3s. We got 1 to fall, but not enough time to make a rally.

Final Score: Alabama St - 75, Gonzaga - 84
ZAGA had 4 players in double figures led by C Victor Prince (21 pts, 7 rebs, 5 asts, 2 blks). No shame in losing to a good team. SG Haven Wilkerson gave it all on his last collegiate game, coming up with a double-double. SG Drew Walker and PF David Andrews came alive in the 2nd half to give us some chance.
