2016-17 season mod

2016-17 season mod

Postby NCAAhoops » Tue Feb 27, 2018 12:15 am

I have been working on a 2016-17 season mod for DDSCB for some time now. Why 2016-17 and not 2017-18 you may ask? When I started I did not feel there were enough stats for the current season and it would skew averages too much. But I'm setup to just add the 2017-18 season as soon as it ends and final stats are available.

This mod will NOT interfere or overwrite Bloomington's great real life mod or hopefully any others. It works in a total different way by importing when you start a new association by using the customize association and then import roster file. I also named all the graphics in a way they would not overwrite his or the original release graphics. I did leave the court file names alone so they will appear if you installed Bloomington's mod and I highly recommend you should to get a full real life experience.

In its current form it only works with DDSCB18 version. It does not work with the 2017 version. (another reason to upgrade your game to the 2018 version)

Conferences - renamed to real 2016, new logos adjusted and sometimes modified so they are seen better in the game screen bar .

Teams - 2016 season, placed in proper 2016 conferences, new logos, updated team primary & secondary colors, ratings adjusted to 3-4 year averages. Didn't spend a lot of time on Arena names and capacities, just used transferred from Wikipedia so if there are errors that's most likely why.

Jerseys - My favorite are the new jerseys including many new alternate jerseys.

Coaches - all 2016 head coaches, assistant coaches for major conferences and some mid-major conference assistants, headshots of all head coaches and some assistants, ages for all head coaches & some assistants, ratings adjusted from 3 to 4 year averages of how real life coaches produced. I used 3-4 year averages for ratings so the season would be more enjoyable if played out into multiple years as just using 2016 stats made the same 2016 teams carry over too much.

Players are game generated. I plan to add real players later (need more time and will include head shots of most players which are done already)

Tournament - Logos included. The WS Midwest Invitational logo and the Jag Holiday Invitational logos have a _16 at the end of the name. You will need to delete the _16 to use these. I did this to keep from overwriting any you may be using now as these two must be named as they are in the game. The other logos can just be loaded from the options screen when you start a new association.

Courts - If you installed Bloomington's mod it will use those as I left the court names defaulted. I created some new tournament courts, the Paradise Jam, Phil Knight Invitational, Las Vegas Classic, Ivy League Conference Tournament & fourth tournament as the CIT tournament (this will have a _16 at the end of the name and would need to be renamed as well as there is a court in Bloomington's mod I do not want to over write.

I had planned to do 2 versions one with players and one without players so you could choose which to use. The game generated players adds some variance so it becomes a more playable mod over time.

There are no historical stats included. Bloomington's mod has already done this in his mod so I didn't take the time to re-invent the wheel.

The first version is complete and I'm running some trials before release, but so far I've run 3 years at least 5 times without issue. This version will not contain players.
I plan to release this week to coincide with the official release of DDSCB18 and the start of March Madness!

I just downloaded an installer package today and plan to start packaging as soon as I can get familiar with the program.

Future?
2017-18 season
I'm considering making a slight historical mod, not for career play but for Exhibition's and Tournament play. Not all teams just some of the better teams. Such as some of the great Duke, Kentucky, North Carolina teams plus some others maybe even the final four teams starting this year and work back maybe. Again these would only be for playing Exhibitions and Tournaments. So maybe one night I'd like to play the '96 Kentucky team against '91 Duke in an exhibition as just an escape and try my coaching skills. If there are others interested in this let me know as it may motivate me to roll up my sleeves.

Nice! Thanks for all your effort.

The historical mod you mentioned in the last paragraph sounds like a lot of fun. Is is possible to create it so that teams from different years can be inserted into a tourney within Tournament Maker? Not sue if the DDSCB program will allow this, but it would be cool.

Yes you can create tournaments. I've actually done 4 teams just to try. The only issue (or positive depends how you look at it), is I will not do 352 team.
Just take say the ACC and have the conference look like this:
91 Duke
96 Duke
13 Duke
80 North Carolina
16 North Carolina
13 Syracuse

SEC
96 Kentucky
94 Arkansas
09 Florida

and so on, I guessed at the years above as I was too lazy to go back and look. But one big file with a lot of these type teams. Not all conferences would be modified as there are just too many for now but could be updated every year with the Final Four teams of the year as we go on and add some more historical teams. I can only go back so far with stats to make the players but I would start with recent teams and work back. Maybe a few of the teams considered the greatest of all time. I'm open to ideas as it will be about 3 weeks before I dive into this.

As an example. If enough people are interested maybe we can start a post nominating teams.
This is why I did the logos with the year attached to the file name as say 96 Kentucky had a different logo back then and doing this way we can have all historical logos pick up when you load the mod.

This would be useless as a played out association but great for Exhibitions or Tournaments.
But you could cut out and paste one of these historical teams and paste into you association export and import back in :D

As soon as I have the 2016 player complete (by tournament time hopefully), I'll start this project.

So would the 16-17 mod be used In addition to Bloomington’s real world mod when it comes out? Because as I understand his doesn’t include coaches, jerseys?

It uses the courts from Bloomington's mod only, as I left the courtpath field in the original DDSCB2017 default.dat file install, which picks them up if you installed his mod. Otherwise everything is new and comes in from the import. If you don't use this import then it uses Bloomington's mod from the default.dat in his mod if you have it installed and does not affect his mod in any way nor do I want it to, that's why I went this route to install. He has too much time and effort in his (I know!). I'm not trying to replace his mod just give you an option to load a different season. They load differently. Bloomington's mod uses the default.dat file and I do not instead I use a Roster Import file which brings the Conferences, teams, coaches and eventually players in. So the Roster Import does more than it indicates.

That's why I recommend using his mod and only use this if you wish to start from the 2016-17. They coexists. You can choose one or the other and eventually others as well.

Will be releasing this mod tomorrow (Friday 3/3) Looking for 2 or 3 people to try first before full release. Just need to see if the installer works for others besides me. Will be busy in the morning so should have it posted sometime tomorrow evening.

I'd be curious to hear how you came up with coach ratings. I've been working on a similar project on my own time, and creating ratings for OFF/DEF/REC isn't too bad, but so far my process for DEV/SCO is somewhat arbitrary.

I used W-L records of coaches for 3-4 years for scouting and used w-L record plus players that went to the NBA for Develop Players. Not all coaches get players in the NBA so a weighted W-L record balances it out for those who don't because they are at a lesser prestige's team.
I figured if the coach is winning games in his conference then he must be able to Scout and Develop Players better than the other coaches in his conference, plus in the smaller conferences they don't send many players to the NBA.

Gotcha, I like the addition of NBA players to an extent, however I feel like NBA players will be NBA regardless of coaching, and I’m not really sure how much impact certain coaches have on that impact, you know?

To find offense/defensive ratings, and using KenPom’s efficiency ratings (adjusted for SOS), I was able to find an “expected efficiency overall rating for each team, based off of their recruiting rankings. That way we can see how successful a coach is, relative to how we expect them to perform given their talent level. If you’re interested, let me know and I can you the ratings.
