3/9: We play #9 seed Baylor, 11-17, 6-12, in the quarters.
3/10: 84-64. It wasn’t that close. 30 for Milt Walk, 14, 5, 15 for Sha Riva, 18, 9, 5 for Mike Baer. Mill had only 12, 9. He turned an ankle and we didn’t want to take a chance of making it worse so he sat through most of the second half. He seemed fine after the game.
#5 seed Iowa ST, 17-13, 8-10, in the semis.
3/11: 93-71. 26, 11 for Mill, 11, 8, 11 for Riva, and all 5 starters had at least 11. +17 RBs, 5 TOs.
#7 seed Oklahoma, 20-13, 8-10, for the title. They played us tough twice, losing by 5 and 7, so we’re taking this seriously.
3/12: 87-71. We never trailed. 29, 22 for Mill, 18, 2, 13 for tourney MOP Sha Riva. 4 Tos.
We should be #1 overall.
#1 Midwest, #2 overall. Okay, Maryland is 29-1, but we’re first in both polls, first in RPI. I don’t get it. Doesn’t matter, we need to win six games to take the title, but still, it’s not right.
We play #16 seed Fairleigh Dickinson, 18-12, in the first round.
3/16: 86-60. 50-20 at the half. 22, 8 for Mill, all 5 starters had at least 12. +17 RBs, 8 TOs.
#9 seed Fresno ST, 21-11, in round 2. We beat them by 42 in the Coaches Classic.
3/18: 79-57. 18, 18 for Mill. +12 RBs, 7 TOs.
#4 seed, #14 ranked Washington, 25-8, in the Sweet Sixteen. They have an outstanding Center. We beat them by 6 in OT in December so we’re working hard.
3/23: 84-50. Mill had 28, 13 and held the other C to 4 and 6. 11, 9, 8 for Baer. +15 RBs.
#2 seed, #7 ranked Florida, 27-8, in the Elite Eight. Their SG and their PF can play. This could be a real challenge.
3/25: 77-60. They were in it for about 18 minutes. Then we went on a 17-2 run. 20, 16 for Mill, 21, 5, 7 for Riva, 11, 13 for Hamm.
In the Final Four vs. 33-1, #2 ranked Maryland, the #1 overall seed in the tournament. On paper it looks like a very close match up. Hopefully we’ll bring our best effort to this one.
4/1: Well, we sure didn’t bring our best game tonight, 72-92. They scored the first 7 points and never trailed. We had some great individual efforts, 26 for Walk, 10, 10, 10 for Riva, 10 and 19 for Mill, 17, 6, 4 for Baer, but we didn’t play D, we were -8 in TOs, and only +4 in RBs, and we were 9-23 from the line.
Very frustrated in that I feel we had the best team in the country both last year and this year, and we didn’t win the title either time.
4/3: Maryland won the title, with a 19 point win over #3 Kentucky.
4/4: Awards: Jess Mill is National POY, and 1st team All American. I get National COY, but it doesn’t mean much, given that we didn’t win the title. In the Big 12, Mill is POY. Milt Walk is Frosh OY and Def. POY. Both make 1st team along with Mike Baer. Sha Riva makes the 2nd team. He should have been 1st team.
4/9: Interestingly enough Maryland called and offered me the head coaching job. It’s almost tempting, but no.
35-3. Overall, 421-78, .844.
