The Phenom

1/26: 71-62 at 13-8, 2-4 Creighton. Once again we take an early lead but they come back. Down 1 at the half. It was close until near the end. With less than 5 minutes to play we finally went on a run.

14, 21 for Stan, 18, 11 for Feld, 15, 6 for Ward.

+24 RBs was the key factor. We held them to 37.7% from the field.

We shot a dismal 13-31 from the line. Awful. +22 in the paint and +18 on 2nd chance points.

I'm still feeling really isolated when I'm away from my basketball world. Of course I'm not away from it very much, but still...

1/29: As expected everyone hit our SAT score.

Marq Feld is #21 and Brian Ward #27 on the Norton list.

I was looking at a very good C but he failed to hit our SAT score. Just as well, I would have had to cut someone to free up a scholarship for him.

1/30: 63-57 vs. 13-7, 4-3 Providence here. We scored the 1st ten points. We blew the doors off, and led by 13 at the half but it felt like it was going to turn into a rout. We spent the 2nd half sleep walking. We were never seriously challenged but we never broke it open the way I thought we would. We led by as many as 20 in the first, but rarely by more than 10 in the 2nd.

This one was a real defensive struggle so no bright, shining stats. Feld led us with 14 and 6, and 4 blocks. 12, 9, 3 with 4 steals for Stan.
Still feeling very alone, and I guess lonely, too. They're not the same thing. PG knows something's wrong and is kind of clingy.

2/2: 109-43 vs. 10-11, 2-6 DePaul here. Took us 4 minutes to establish a 10 point lead, and it was quickly 20, and then 30. 54-17 at the half. This one was embarrassing. I played my bench for nearly half the game, 95 minutes out of 200.

19, 3, 4 for sub guard Mike Wins, 18, 6 for Hawk.

+15 RBs, only 6 TOs.

We shot 63.4% to their 27.3%. We hit 13 of 26 threes.

+38 points in the paint.

2/6: 80-88 at 14-9, 5-4 Xavier. We got the lead to 10 quickly and then they came back and took a lead. Down 5 at the half. The D was just plain awful tonight; 8 more points given up than our previous high, and that was in an OT game.

17, 11 for Stan, 18, 5, 4 for Gazu, 13, 7 for Feld.

+7 RBs. But they shot 53.6%, 10-21 on threes. We were 7-18 from the line. We're now one back of 1st, one ahead of Xavier.

When I got home Brandi was in my place; she still takes care of PG when I'm on the road, but this is the first time she's been here waiting for me. She wanted to talk.

She wants to get back together. I'm not convinced. I mean we'd still be in a space that was too crowded and I'm not all that sure that it would work in a larger space.

Ruth, my therapist, talks a lot about control issues and she's brought me around to the belief that our battles over space were really about control, and that we hadn't been very good at all at resolving those issues.

At the end of the discussion with Brandi I told her I needed to think about things. She wasn't happy with that.

2/9: 66-63 with #25 Marquette, 15-9, 6-4, here. Close for the entire half. Down 2 at the break. What a war! 18 lead changes, 13 ties. We finally took a 7 point lead, our largest of the game, very late in the game. They got it to three but that was as close as they came. We had to work for this one.

13, 15 for Stan, 13, 4 for Juli.

+7 RBs but too many TOs, 16. We shot only 33.9%; they shot 34.5%. We won it in the paint, +14.

I've discussed giving the relationship another chance with Ruth. She didn't tell me what I should do, but kept trying to help me figure out what I want to do. I'm not sure, and Ruth suggested that this in itself may be an answer... Thinking about it.

2/13: 90-71 at 12-12, 4-7 UConn. This was a battle through the first half. Up 2 at the break. A good run midway through the 2nd gave us control.

Big game for Gabe Stan, 25, 17. 15, 7 for Juli, 13, 3, 5 for Gazu.

+21 RBs, and that was key. It gave us an amazing 28 more shots.

4 to play. We're still #3, NET #3, in 2nd place, 1 back of Georgetown, 1 up on Xavier. We play Georgetown there next week.

#9 Seton Hall is next, at our place. We won by 14 there.

2/16: 82-64. Low scoring first half, and close. Up 7 at the break. Ridiculous number of foul calls in the 1st half. We slowly and steadily built the lead in the 2nd half. It's nice to beat #9 in the country by 18.

Sila Gazu abd Angelo Triua both got hurt. Tria should be ready for Georgetown. Gazu will not. Mike Wins will start.

#2 Georgetown lost, and Xavier lost their last 2. We're tied for 1st, 2 up on third place Seton Hall.

At #2 Georgetown next. They're 26-2, 11-2, beat us by 3 in OT at our place but Feld was hurt. On paper it is a very even match up. Wins will need to step up big, especially on D, as his man gets 22.3 PPG. Marq Feld will also have a challenge at PF. Our depleted bench also needs to come up big for us, especially Deke Juli. We need to score and we need to play our best D in this big game. Statistically we hold an edge in D and in RBs but we'll see what happens.

2/20: 79-77! As expected, this is a real battle. We went on a big run midway through the half. Up 12 at the break. Then they went on a huge run in the 2nd, caught us and built an 11 point lead. We battled back, tied it in the last minute, then Gabe Stan hit an 8 footer with a hand in his face with 1.3 to go for the win!

We played against Georgetown short handed both times, lost in OT at our place, won by 2 at their place. If we meet in the Big East tourney final it should be quite a game!

23, 6 for Stan. 6 players had between 10 and 7 points.

-5 RBs, 11 TOs. Our usual horrible free throw shooting, 8-20, kept it closer than it should have been. I have no solution for this. They went 31-39 from the line.

We shot 45.6%, they shot 37.7%. We took 15 more shots and made 11 of them, and had 9 threes to their 6. The foul line kept them in it. Feld fouled out in 23 minutes, but Juli and Tria stepped up.

Our bench was 22, 13, 7, to 13, 7, 1, and that was a big factor as well.

Barring a slip up in one of our last two games we'll be the #1 seed in the conf. tournament.

When I got home Brandi was waiting for me again.

When I told her I didn't think giving our relationship another try was a good idea, she gave back my house key and told me to make other arrangements for taking care of PG when I'm on the road. Great!

2/23: 81-55 vs. 12-17, 6-8, ST Johns here. We scored the 1st 9 points. Up 20 at the half. We expected a mismatch and we got one.

20, 10, 4 for Feld, 12, 10 for Stan. Good play all around.

+9 RBs, only 6 TOs. We took 23 more shots from the field and made 12 of them. +22 points in the paint.

2 game lead with one to play so we've clinched 1st place.

2/24: The A. D.'s secretary agreed to look after my cat when I'm on the road.

2/27: 67-51 at 15-13, 5-10 Villanova. They took an early lead. I thought my kids weren't at all focused. It took 2 time outs to wake them up. Up only
6 at the half. Not our best effort. The D was good though.

17, 6 for Feld, 15, 8 for Stan, 11, 13, with 4 steals for Juli.

+11 RBs. We held them to 34% from the floor, 27.6% on threes. +22 in the paint.

#2 in the country, NET #2. 29-2, 14-2, 2 up on 2nd place Georgetown, #3 ranked.

#1 Overall NET rating, #1 Def., #9 Off. #1 in RBs, #5 in PPG, #8 in PPG Allowed.

+19.2 PPG, +9.3 RBs, -5.8 TOs, +6 Assists, +3.2 steals.

Gabe Stan leads us in PPG with 17.2, and in RBs with 9.1. The next 5 scorers range from 12.5 to 8.6.

On to the post season. What are our chances of repeating as national champ? Difficult to say, but we're #2 in the country so we certainyl have a shot!
