Comments: This is the American Sports Network’s Roger Rydell. I’ve been following the coaching careers of 5 coaches who began coaching in 2030 at teams trying to advance into Division 1. Following a difficult start, all 5 have successful teams playing at various levels in Division 1. With just a month remaining in the regular season, I recently contacted each one and asked them the same question, “Hey coach, what’s been the most positive thing about your team this season and what’s your biggest concern related to your team?” Here are their responses:

Mike McMillan, MD-Eastern Shore Hawks: “I’m most excited by our defense. We’ve held opponents to 62.7 ppg which is 27th best in the country. And on offense my guys have the best field goal percentage (51.1%) of any team in Division 1. Both of those are pretty impressive. My primary concern is our lack of depth. We’ve relied very heavily on our starters, so we need to avoid any major injuries.”

Ramon Montez, Alcorn State Braves: “Roger, our offense has run hot and cold so it’s darned good that we’ve played exceptionally strong defense. We’ve held our opponents to an average of just 60.9 ppg which is 12th best within Division 1. And on offense, Caleb Sanden is putting together just a fantastic senior season, hitting 50% of his FG’s, 42% of his 3’s, and 80% of his FT’s and is averaging 19.6 ppg. A big concern of mine is that 2 of our next 3 games are away games against very strong teams so we’re really going to be tested. If we were to lose those 2 games, we’d drop way down in the standings.”

Terry Morillo, Western Illinois Leathernecks: “There are a lot of positives about the Leathernecks. Our players have put together a good combination of strong offense and defense and in our last 7 games, which we’ve won, we’ve been extremely consistent, scoring 70-79 points in each game and doing what’s needed to carve out wins. Concerns? Not any big concerns. 5 of 8 of our remaining conference games are on the road, so we’ll need to bear for each of those games. And a concern for next season is that both of our starting guards will be graduating after this season.”

Dontell Spencer, Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions: “A concern is that our FT shooting has been horrible. We’re only hitting 64% of our foul shots and that’s pretty close to being near the bottom of the barrel in Division 1. That could be the difference in a close game. Otherwise our offense has been a big positive since we’re scoring 75.7 ppg which is 36th best in the nation…and unlike our FT shooting, our FG percentage is very good…47.6% which is 39th in the country. And Chris Betts, Bill Thorton and Dan Jefferson are averaging between 17.2 ppg and 13.1 ppg so that makes it tough for opponents to focus on shutting down a single player of ours and thereby throttling our offense.”

Ken Yamoto, UC-San Diego Tritons: “We expected Jack Robinson and Chris Williams to play well and they’ve done exactly that, but a real positive has been players with limited prior experience who are producing so well…Michel Woodward, Brad Sanders, Jeremiah Mason, Jared Keating, and Dalonte Keams. And since all our other PG’s are freshmen, Dalonte’s emergence as a playmaker and distributor of passes has filled what otherwise would likely have been a big hole in our lineup. My primary concern is that while we’re 9-0 at home, we’re 1-9 on the road. Some of that is due to our team being pretty young and lacking experience, but we just have to do better when we’re playing away. Another concern that I think probably is common to one extent or another to each of us 5 coaches is the difficulty of attracting quality recruits to basketball programs that are in the lower echelon within Division 1. For me, recruiting has often been the bane of my frustration with coaching at the Division 1 level.”

MD-Eastern Shore (19-5, 9-3)—82, Hampton—76 (The Hawks led by as much as 16 points in the first half but the Pirates trimmed their lead to 5 at the break and overtook MD-Eastern Shore early in the 2nd half. The Hawks regained the lead quickly and then held onto a small lead the rest of the way. PF Dwayne Bullett had 25 points and 8 boards, PG Lataryl Brown scored 18, and C Terrance Minor and SG Carl Hancock both scored 11 points.)

Conference U:

Maine—77, UC-San Diego (11-11, 5-6)—68 (This was an exciting game with 16 lead changes and 7 ties, but the Tritons ran out of gas late in the 2nd half for a disappointing home loss. SF Brad Sanders scored 22 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. C Michel Woodward had 13 points and reserve forward Jeremiah Mason scored 10.)

UC-San Diego (12-11, 6-6)—86, Dartmouth—71 (With C Donnell Grisham scoring 25 and grabbing 10 boards, Dartmouth kept things interesting for the first 30 minutes but then the Tritons pulled away to record an easy win. SG Chris Williams poured in 28 points for the Tritons with PF Jack Robinson dropped in 23 points, and PG Dalonte Keams recording a double-double (11 points and 10 assists).

Western Illinois (16-6, 9-2)—78, Sacred Heart—68 (Neither team gained much of an advantage in the first half. After 12 lead changes and 7 ties, the half ended with Sacred Heart holding a 39-38 lead. But the Leathernecks took control in the 2nd half to gain a nice road victory. Western Illinoi hit 54 % of their FG’s with SG Marcelo Barker scored 17 and had 4 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals and a block, C Craig Grant put in 16 points, and reserve forward Zac Johnson added 11 points.)

Game Results:

February 19-25, 2037:

Conference S:

Alcorn State (17-7, 10-3)—75, Northern Colorado—53 (The Braves had absolutely no problem handling Northern Colorado and had the advantage in every team stat. C Bernie Graham and SG Caleb Sanden led the scoring with 16 points apiece. PF Jared Kraft scored 14 and had 8 rebounds. Reserve guard Teremun Harris tossed in 12 points in his 12 minutes of play.)

Alcorn State (18-7, 11-3)—59, New Orleans—51 (This road game for the Braves was in doublt for 38 minutes but Alcorn State edged ahead at the end. SG Caleb Sanden scored 20 with C Bernie Graham and PG Todd Young both adding 12 points.)

Arkansas-Pine Bluff (20-4, 12-1)—69, California Baptist—66 (The Golden Lions looked to have an easy road victory rapped up when they went ahead by as much as 17 points, but the Lancers made big run in the final 6 minutes to throw a real scare into Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The Golden Lions out-rebounded the Lancers 43-28 but made 21 turnovers compared to just 11 by California Baptist. Dan Jefferson moved from SF to SG with Bill Thorton recovering from an injured arm and scored 18 points. PF Antonio Gailey tossed in 13 points and pulled down 8 boards and PG William Huggins had 12 points, 8 assists and 6 rebounds.)

Arkansas-Pine Bluff (21-4, 13-1)—85, Campbell—73 (The game was exceptionally close for the first 12 minutes and then again midway through the 2nd half, but the Golden Lions outshot the Camels 56% to 39% to prevail. Dan Jefferson again started at SG and led the scoring with 20 points. C Chris Betts scored 11. Reserves Henry White, Bill Thorton, and Delvon Palmer scored 12, 11 and 10 points, respectively.)

Conference T:

Charleston Southern—62, MD-Eastern Shore (19-6, 9-4)—43 (The Hawks came in flat and played that way the entire game as they let the Buccaneers run roughshod over them. Dwayne Bullet and Terrance Minor switch positions with Bullett scoring 17 at C and Minor contributing 10 at PF.)

Seattle—73, MD-Eastern Shore (19-7, 9-5)—61 (For the 2nd straight game, the Hawks were slow out of the blocks and failed to ever make a serious run. They were -10 in rebounding. Their scoring was led by reserve C Geordie Johnson with 17 points. Starting C Dwayne Bullett was in foul trouble most of the game but scored 10 points.)

Conference U:

Prairie View—90, UC-San Diego (12-12, 6-7)—82 (The biggest lead by either team was 9 points and the game wavered back and forth the entire way. But again, the Tritons let yet another awayD game slip away from them in the final minutes. Coach Ken Yamoto said, “Offensively we played one helluva game out there, but we just didn’t stop them defensively, letting them hit 58% of their shots. And the Panthers’ PG Donald Salyers was on fire, hitting 12 of 13 from the field including all 6 of his 3’s and scoring 34 points.” The Tritons’ reserve forward Jeremiah Mason hit 9 of 11 shots and scored 24 and PF Jack Robinson and SG Chris Williams both chipped in 12 points.)

UC-San Diego (13-12, 7-7)—87, Sacred Heart—81 (The first 13 minutes of this game were a series of lead changes with the Tritons coming away with a slim 44-42 halftime lead. The Tritons took control in the second half but had to hang on in the final moments to get a critical win. SF Brad Sanders dropped in 22 points, PF Jack Robinson added 12, and reserve forward Jeremiah Mason scored 11.)

Western Illinois (18-6, 11-2)—86, Tennessee-Martin—64 (The Skyhawks took a small lead that lasted for 11 minutes, but then Western Illinois grabbed the lead and never let it go. Both teams emptied their bench in this romp by the Leathernecks. SF James Johnson led all scorers with 18 points and SF James Johnson and reserve forward Joe Bergmann both scored 10 points.)

Massachusetts-Lowell—73, Western Illinois (18-7, 11-3)—62 (The Leathernecks fell behind early. By hitting just 39% of the FGA’s and 27% of their 3’s and failing to compete on the boards (-10), they never truly challenged the River Hawks even though 4 starters scored in double figures: SF James Johnson-14; SG Marcelo Barker-13; C Craig Grant-10; PG Tom Daniel-10.)

Significant Injuries: None

Awards: None

Comments: MD-Eastern Shore’s disastrous week dropped them from 1st to 3rd place in Conference T, a game behind the co-leaders. The Hawks losses brought out some animosity within the team that Coach Mike McMillan had to try to alleviate. When he was rebuffed, he suspended reserve C Jim Taflinger for the coming week’s final 2 games of the regular season. UC-San Diego is tied with 2 other teams for 6th place in Conference U and needs to win both remaining 2 games to gain any chance of moving up to 4th place. Gaining promotion by winning the conference tournament is an even bigger challenge for the Tritons.

Alcorn State (20-7, 13-3)—82, McNeese State—60 (The first half was a defensive battle with Alcorn State eking out a 28-24 lead. Arkansas-Pine Bluff (23-4, 15-1)—The Golden Lions came on strong at the end of the 1st half to lead 36-24. Conference T:

Bethune-Cookman—56, MD-Eastern Shore (20-8, 10-6)—42 (The Hawks fizzled for the 3rd time in their final 4 games of the regular season and scored just 15 points in the 2nd half after leading by 2 at the break. Both C Dwayne Bullett and PF Terrance Minor had 12 points and 7 rebounds each.)

Conference U:

Delaware State—75, UC-San Diego (13-13, 7-8)—56 (UC-San Diego began strongly, building a 7 point lead midway through the fist half, but then the Tritons road woes re-emerged. SF Brad Sanders scored 17 and SG Chris Williams hit for 14 points.)

Eastern Illinois—88, UC-San Diego (13-14, 7-9)—85 (UC-San Diego was trounced in the first half and trailed 56-30 at the break. But the Tritons came out fighting in the 2nd half and cut steadily into the Panthers’ lead. But as they closed the gap and threatened to take the lead with time running out, they were forced to foul in the final minute. Eastern Illinois converted at the line to maintain their thin margin and thwart UC-San Diego’s tremendous comeback effort. PF Jack Robinson led the Triton’s scoring with 21 points. SF Brad Sanders hit for 15, SG Chris Williams tossed in 14, and reserve forward Jeremiah Mason popped in 13.)

Western Illinois (19-7, 12-3)—77, Maine—67 (Western Illinois was unable to take control for the first 14 minutes. But following 8 lead changes, the Leathernecks were ahead at the end of the half 44-32. Their lead grew to 20 in the 2nd half and they coasted to an easy victory, primarily by out-rebounding the Black Bears 40-25. SG Marcelo Barker scored 15, but both C Craig Grant (14 points, 12 boards) and PF Orvo Haapajarvi (13 points, 11 rebounds) recorded double-double. SF James Johnson added 12 points.)

Western Illinois (20-7, 13-3)—76, Bellarmine—52 (The two teams fought it out throughout most of the first half, but the Leathernecks spurted ahead in the last 6 minutes to lead by 12 going into the 2nd half. Western Illinois’ dominance continued throughout the 2nd half. The Leathernecks hit 58% of their FG’s compared to Bellarmine’s 32% shooting. C Craig Grant had 22 points and 11 rebounds. SG Marcelo Barker hit for 16 points and reserve forward Zac Johnson scored 12.)

POST-SEASON TOURNAMENT RESULTS:

Western Illinois

NCAA Rnd 1:

Maryland—72, Western Illinois—62 (Even though Maryland held the lead throughout most of the game, the Leathernecks kept making runs that put a scare into the Terrapins. SG Marcelo Barker tossed in 19 points, PG Tom Daniel hit for 13 points, and reserve forward Joe Bergmann scored 10.)

Alcorn State

NCAA Rnd 1:

Colorado—81, Alcorn State—78 (Very exciting game with 22 lead changes and 12 ties and neither team getting more than an 8 point lead. With the game tied, Colorado hit a 3 with 3 seconds remaining. The Braves tossed up a desperation shot beyond midcourt as time was about to expire, but it was not even close to finding the hoop. SG Caleb Sanden hit for 24 points, SF Harold Hein scored 17, and C Bernie Graham had a double-double…13 points and 11 boards.)

Arkansas-Pine Bluff

NCAA Rnd 1:

Texas A&M—82, Arkansas-Pine Bluff—67 (Arkansas-Pine Bluff hung with Texas A&M through the first 32 minutes of this game, but then the Aggies went on a run that put the game out of reach for the Golden Lions. C Chris Betts scored 12 points and PG William Huggins and PF Antonio Gailey both dropped in 10 points.)

MD-Eastern Shore

CBI Rnd 1:

Morehead State—64, MD-Eastern Shore—58 (The fortunes for each team ebbed and flowed throughout the entire game. But after 14 lead changes and 8 ties, Morehead State edged ahead with 3 minutes to play and expanded their lead in the final minute when the Hawks were forced to foul. C Terrance Minor with 19 points was the only member of the Hawks to score in double figures.)
