Feb. 14: #13 Indiana Hoosiers (19-5, 9-1) @ Winthrop Eagles (10-11, 4-6)

Mike McMillan: There were 7 lead changes in the first 8 minutes of the game, but we then scored 9 straight points and by the end of the half led 42-33. Our lead expanded midway through the 2nd half to 17 points and we came away with an 81-73 win by knocking down 56% of our FG’s and 64% of our 3’s. Chris Broussard—19 pts, 4 ast, 3 stl; Ray Richardson—17 pts, 4 reb (in 13 min. on the court); Brian Valdez—12 pts, 10 reb, 3 ast; Jason Collier—10 pts, 6 reb, 2 ast. [20-5, 10-1, 1st place]

Feb. 17: #13 Indiana Hoosiers (20-5, 10-1) @ Auburn Tigers (13-9, 5-6)

Ramon Montez: The first half was a real battle with neither team able to get ahead by much. At halftime we led 31-30. The first 11 minutes of the 2nd half were even closer, if that’s possible. After 16 lead changes in the game, we began stepping away from Auburn to achieve a 75-61 victory. We hit 52% of our shots compared to 42% by the Tigers and forced Auburn into making 21 turnovers. Brian Valdez—16 pts, 3 ast, 2 stl; George Zinn—10 pts, 5 reb, 2 ast; Chris Broussard—10 pts, 5 reb, 3 ast, 3 stl; Julius Waterman—8 pts. [21-5, 11-1, 1st place]

Feb. 21: Duquesne Dukes (14-9, 7-5) @ #13 Indiana Hoosiers [21-5, 11-1)

Terry Morillo: Neither team could get more than a 3 point lead during the first 15 minutes during which there were 6 lead changes. But Chris Broussard got hot, scoring most of his 13 points as the first half wound down…and he led us to a 41-30 halftime advantage. We outshot the Dukes 60% to 36% but all other aspects of the game in the half were pretty equal. Duquesne closed to within 5 points midway through the 2nd half, but we regained a solid lead only to have the Dukes cut it to 3 points with 3 minutes to go. We never let them get closer and finished by whipping Duquesne in a hard-fought game 72-65. Chris Broussard—17 pts, 4 reb, 2 ast, 2 stl, 2 blk; George Zinn—10 pts, 9 reb, 4 ast, 2 stl; Brett Mosley—10 pts, 3 ast; Julius Waterman—9 pts, 3 reb, Ray Richardson—8 pts, 3 reb. Julius Waterman injured his wrist which may limit him in our next game. [22-5, 12-1, 1st place but still just 1 game ahead of #17 ranked Richmond.]

Feb. 24: Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders (9-15, 2-11) @ #13 Indiana Hoosiers (22-5, 12-1)

Mike McMillan: We fell behind 11-2 but scored then next 14 points. We were up by 6 with 10 minutes left in the half, but the Blue Raiders got hot (hitting 61% of their FG’s in the half) and blew past us to post a 46-38 halftime lead. We fell behind by 11 points several times in the 2nd half, but came back late to lead by one with 5 seconds to go. But Middle Tennessee’s PG Clement McWilliams hit a lengthy prayer of a 3 as time expired to knock us off 78-76. Big mistake on our part was to play Julius Waterman with an injured wrist…he failed to score or do much else. We also got just a combined 7 points from starters Jason Collier and Brett Mosley and played shoddy D, letting the Blue Raiders hit 56% of their shots. Collier had an excuse since he sprained his finger in the game. George Zinn—15 pts, 4 reb, 3 stl; Chris Broussard—14 pts, 3 reb, 6 ast, 2 stl; Ray Richardson—12 pts; Brian Valdez—10 pts, 5 reb, 2 ast, 2 stl, 2 blk; Johnny Lubeck—7 pts, 2 ast, 2 stl. [22-6, 12-2, 1st place tie]

Feb. 28: #13 Indiana Hoosiers (22-6, 12-2) @ Milwaukee Panthers (14-11, 5-9)

Ken Yamoto: We led most of the first half, but the Panthers tied us at the end of the first half at 41-41. Too many fouls on us so that we were outscore by 10 points at the foul line. We again led throughout most of the 2nd half, but Milwaukee gained a 3 point lead with 4 minutes to play. The game was tied at 69-69 with 1:33 to play. Neither team could get the ball in the basket. We called a timeout with 5 seconds left to set up a final shot, but our shot got blocked sending the game to overtime. In the OT, the teams traded baskets until Milwaukee scored to go ahead by 2 with 48 seconds remaining. We again called a timeout and the play worked but Broussard’s shot rimmed out and we ended up with a 79-77 loss. The refs sent the Panthers to the line 14 more times than us where they outscored us by 13 points. Chris Broussard—17 pts, 5 reb, 3 ast, 5 stl; George Zinn—16 pts, 4 reb, 5 ast; Brian Valdez—14 pts, 4 reb. [22-7, 12-3, 2nd place]

#13 Indiana Hoosiers (22-7, 12-3) @ Southern Methodist Mustangs (13-15, 6-9)

Ramon Montez: Losing our last 2 games has dropped us behind Richmond by a game in the standings (and we’re but 1 game up on 3rd place Florida State) with just this final game in the regular season to go. We have 3 injured players; Kirk Reeves who’s still out with a broken hand, Jason Collier with a sprained finger, and Martin Towers whose nursing a sore leg. We played good D in the first half to take a 36-28 halftime lead. But that was our biggest lead of the game. We held onto a small lead in the 2nd half until SMU tied us with 3 minutes to go. Ray Richardson hit a 3 with 31 seconds to go to put us up by 3. SMU missed but got a tip-in to get within a single point with just 9 seconds on the clock. They fouled and Brian Valdez dropped in a pair of free throws. SMU got off a 3 attempt but it was off the mark and we escaped with a 68-65 victory even though we had 23 turnovers in the game. The injury bug keeps biting…Chris Broussard strained his knee which will take nearly 2 weeks to completely heal…that could jeopardize our conference tourney efforts. George Zinn—19 pts, 6 reb, 2 stl; Brian Valdez—10 pts, 3 reb; Martin Towers—10 pts; Ray Richardson—7 pts, 5 reb, 2 ast. [23-7, 13-3, 2nd place]

Chris Broussard will be fully recovered should we make it to the 2nd round of the NCAA and Kirk Reeves will be back if we make it to the Sweet 16.

2045-46 SEASON

Terry Morillo, co-head coach

We were promoted to Conference E due to our finishing 2nd in the Conference F standings and winning the Conference F Tournament last season.

Here’s the other teams now in Conference E: Baylor, Cal-Berkeley, Davidson, Florida St, Georgia Tech, Marquette, Marshall, Minnesota, Pittsburgh, Richmond, Tennessee, Texas A&M, UC Santa Barbara, Utah St, Wisconsin. Besides us, Richmond, Tennessee, and Florida State were promoted this year. Baylor, Minnesota, UC Santa Barbara, and Utah State were relegated from Conference D this year.

Our recruiting class was rated as the 29th best within Division 1. Obviously I’m probably biased, but I feel it’s even a bit better than that. I’m looking forward to working with our new recruits this season and beyond.

Apparently the competition amongst our inside players is too great. I say that because 3 of them have decided to transfer (PF’s Jason Collier, Andrew Watkins, and Jamar McKie). We therefore will be active in going after transfer players and hopefully will get 2 C’s and/or PF’s. For the 3rd transfer player, we want the best player available, irrespective of the position.

Ramon Montez, co-head coach

We had very good several transfer players who expressed interest in coming our way. We contacted some of those plus a lot of other highly talented players. We immediately landed one player who initially had us in his top 5. We then had 2 players we initially offered scholarships to list us as their #1 school. We re-offered to both and got them. So we finished extremely quickly this year. Here’s our new players:

C Marcus Wright, a 6-9 sophomore from Leonardtown, MD. He played for Boston College as a freshman where he started all their games and averaged 8.6 ppg, 6.7 rpg, and 1.9 bpg. On one hand this was a no-brainer for us. We evaluated him as the top transfer player (a true A) this year. He’s a 4-1/2 star who should become a 5-star players. He was the #76 ranked player when he was recruited by Boston College and has shown he’s an even better player than that ranking. He’s a good scorer and passer and a strong defender with outstanding blocking skills. And he’s a fantastic rebounder. So….why did I say “on one hand”? Because on the other hand he’s a real risk due to his personality that can be destructive and possibly poisonous. Typically we don’t go after someone like that, but his talent is so extreme that we decided to take a chance and work hard on restraining what could be negative vibrations.

PF Robert Bowie, a 6-7 sophomore from Gainesville, FL. He transferred from Alabama where as a freshman he started and averaged 9.5 ppg and 3.6 rpg. He’s a 4-star player right now and should improve as he matures with us. He was the #211 ranked recruit when Alabama landed him but I think he’s going to fit into our team so well and we rated him as a strong B transfer player. Like Wright, he’ll be a dynamic rebounder and he’s got very strong skills across the board plus is extremely athletic. Because of the strength of a couple other players on our team, he may not start this coming season, but he will get plenty of playing time.

SG Wayne Rush, a 6-4 junior from Kailua, HI. He attended Georgetown for his first 2 seasons of play and started 6 games as a freshman and then got pushed aside last season because the team picked up an all-star guard. As a freshman he averaged 16.6 mpg, 7.7 ppg, 1.5 rpg, 1.2 apg, and 1.2 spg. He was the #400 ranked recruit prior to coming to Georgetown. He’s a 3-1/2 star player who should improve when given more playing time. We felt he is a definite B transfer player. I like that he has very strong overall skills…he can score, rebound and defend plus he’s a tough guy who is very athletic. He’ll challenge for a starting role for us.

So we made a great haul. While we lost some very good players, I think we improved our overall depth and capabilities by getting these 3 players. Watch out Conference E. The Hoosiers have arrived and are gonna kick some ass.

As I said, the three players who transferred away from us were darned good players. This was proven when all 3 were picked up early by good schools in the transfer portal process. Andrew Watkins will be playing for Maryland, Jason Collier transferred to Oregon State, and Jamar McKie opted to go to Minnesota. My guess is that both Collier and Watkins will start for their respective new teams. McKie still has some development to do, but hopefully will get some solid playing time for Minnesota so that he can fulfill his strong potential.
