XFL Week 16: Crusaders Clinch Playoff Spot with 26-21 Win over Defenders
July 13, 2024
London, ENGLAND - The London Crusaders clinched a playoff berth with a 26-21 victory over the Washington Defenders in front of 42,403 fans. RB Wayne Gallman scored the game-winning touchdown on a 1-yard rush with 2 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter to give London its 5-point margin. Gallman accounted for all 44 yards on the drive with 6 rushing yards and a 38-yard catch that was the longest play from scrimmage for either team. The Defenders had taken a 1-point lead, 21-20, with 4:55 to play after a 73-yard, 12-play drive culminated in a 17-yard touchdown pass from QB Jordan Ta'amu to WR Ty Scott and 1-point conversion pass from Ta'amu to TE Kaden Smith. Washington scored its other touchdown on the first possession of the second half when Ta'amu found TE Alex Ellis for a 30-yard touchdown pass with 10:38 to play in the third quarter. The pair also connected on the ensuing 2-point conversion to run the Washington advantage to 14-9. That lead was short-lived, as the Crusaders stormed back with a touchdown of their own less than 3 minutes later on a 7-yard touchdown run by Gallman. QB Manny Wilkins completed a 5-yard pass to TE Kemari Averett for the 2-point conversion to give London a 17-14 lead. After a drive from each team that ended in punts, DB Qwnnterrio Cole intercepted Ta'amu on the first play of the fourth quarter to give London possession at the 18 yard line. That set up K Andre Szmyt for a 37-yard field goal that extended the London lead to 20-14 with 11:25 to play in the final quarter.
The Crusaders took their first lead of the game, 9-3, with 1:07 left before halftime when RB Jacob Saylors scored on a 2-yard rush. Defenders K Matt McCrane made his second field goal of the half, a 49-yarder with 6 seconds left before halftime to narrow the Crusaders' lead to three points, 9-6. The teams traded field goals to begin the game. McCrane made a 48-yard field goal with 8:33 left in the first quarter and Szmyt made his first field goal of the game on a 26-yard strike with 7:59 to play in the second quarter after DB Kameron Kelly intercepted Ta'amu to give London the ball with 10 seconds left in the opening quarter.

XFL Week 16: Panthers Keep Rolling with 24-18 Win Over Showboats
July 14, 2024
Detroit, MI - The quarterback tandem of Brian Lewerke and Bryce Perkins proved successful for the Detroit Panthers in consecutive weeks, defeating the Memphis Showboats 24-18 at Ford Field to extend their win streak to four. Both Lewerke and Perkins threw for a touchdown and both totaled over 80 passing yards each. WR Devin Gray made life easy for his quarterbacks and had his best game of the season with six catches for 84 yards and a touchdown, including a 50-yard score in the second quarter. RB Matthew Colburn recorded two rushing touchdowns on the day, his first multi-score game this season.
The Panthers found the endzone early in the opening quarter once again, as Detroit only needed five plays to hit pay dirt. Lewerke, making his second consecutive start, rifled a dart to TE Cole Hikutini down the middle of the field for a 20-yard touchdown. Lewerke totaled 58 passing yards on the opening drive to give Detroit a 6-0 lead. Salt Lake quickly tied the game on their first offensive play of the game with a QB Case Cookus 65-yard touchdown pass to WR Daewood Davis. The two-point attempt was no good, keeping the score even. Detroit reclaimed the lead on the ensuing drive on the legs of Colburn with a one-yard rushing score, his third of the season. Detroit's one-point attempt was unsuccessful, but they led 12-6. The Showboats looked to respond, but DB Nate Brooks snatched an interception for his first takeaway of the season. Brooks met the ball at the apex, leaving no room for the Salt Lake receiver. The Panthers could not take advantage of the turnover. Panther DL Kenny Willekes made a huge play before halftime, sacking Cookus to force a Salt Lake punt. With Perkins under center, the Panthers added a touchdown with less than a minute before intermission. Perkins found Gray for a catch-and-run 50-yard score. Showboats K Matt Coghlin booted a 55-yard field goal as time expired, cutting into Detroit's lead and making it a 18-9 game.
Detroit's sack party continued in the third quarter with DL Garrett Marino putting Cookus on the turf, his first sack of the season, on the first offensive play of the second half. Cookus rebounded on the next play with a 39-yard dart to WR Dee Anderson. Cookus was injured on the play and did not return. Showboats backup and former Panther QB Josh Love entered and mustered up a scoring drive with a 14-yard pass to Davis, his second touchdown of the afternoon. With an unsuccessful two-point conversion, the score stood 18-15 in favor of Detroit. The Panthers drove into Salt Lake territory on their ensuing possession but came up empty-handed, with K Jake Bates missing a 51-yard field goal, his first miss inside of Ford Field this season. Coghlin tied the game for the Showboats with a 39-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter. Detroit retook the lead with another Colburn rushing score to make it 24-16 with less than eight minutes left in the game. The Panthers tallied four plays of 10+ yards on the drive. The Panthers defense came through to close the game with two sacks, one by DL Sean Mahone and the other by DL TJ Carter, both their firsts of the season, bringing the sack total on the game to four.

Another field goal miss by Santoso in the fourth kept the Renegades within striking distance, down eleven points. Dallas capitalized with a 9-play scoring drive as Perez found WR JaVonta Payton in the back of the endzone from five yards out.
