Coaching Jobs

Postby PointGuard » Fri Nov 29, 2013 3:18 am

13 schools show interest in hiring me as their new head coach, including Nebraska, Baylor, Air Force, and Duquesne. But I decide that New Hampshire has too much work to be done here yet, so don’t go after any of the available jobs.

Recruiting

Postby PointGuard » Fri Nov 29, 2013 3:19 am

One recruit committed last fall:

SG Rashun House, 6-3 HS Sr, Langdon, NH, 2.8 GPA, SAT: 1030. Stats: 18.5ppg, 3.1 apg, 3.8 rpg, 1.9 spg, 2.1 bpg. Athletic, good scorer, weak passing and ball handling skills, hard worker, not a leader but doesn’t cause problems either, rarely missed practices, didn’t stand out at Indy Elite Camp or Big Apple Camp. Ranked 81st best in nation. Overall rating: B

Another recruit committed in Janaury:

SF Brad Reid, 6-6 HS Sr, Erie, PA, 2.9 GPA, SAT: 930. Stats: 15.3 ppg, 3.0 apg, 6.1 rpg, 1.9 spg, 1.9 bpg. Good scorer and outside shooter, weak rebounder, athletic, some attitudeand discipline problems, hard worker, not many problems with injuries, didn’t stand out at Big Apple Showcase. Ranked 454th best in nation. Overall rating: C.

That left one scholarship to fill in the spring. I was definitely considering going after one of two very talented JC big men. But then because of my concern that PG Nate Augustus may transfer due to his poor relationship with both me and the entire team, I decided to go after a PG. I passed on a highly rated JC PG to go after a little lower ranked PG from Germany that Greg Bivins clued me into while I was visiting Greg in Germany last summer. We landed him in early April:

PG Heinrich Neubauer, 6-3 HS Sr, Stuttgart, Germany, 3.2 GPA, SAT: 1070. Stats: 17.9 ppg, 3.7 apg, 4.8 rpg, 1.9 spg, 1.8 bpg. Good scorer with good outside shooting ability, Good ball handler, weak rebounder, very athletic, rarely missed practice, hard worker. Ranked 101st. Overall rating: B.

Meeting with the board

Postby PointGuard » Fri Nov 29, 2013 3:21 am

We met the only goal for this year (Don’t finish last in the conference). After getting to the Big Dance this year, our goals for next year were heightened…win at least 15 games and win the conference tournament.

I requested an upgrade to our D+ rated facilities and the request was approved which will improve our facilities to C+.

Pro Players

Postby PointGuard » Fri Nov 29, 2013 3:23 am

Two CSU Bakersfield graduates (that I recruited and whom played for me as CSU Bakersfield) played professionally in the 2018-2019 season:

SG Jerell Brown was on the Chicago Bulls roster the entire year. He played in just 21 games though. In those 21 games he was used sparingly, averaging just 4.8 mpg. He averaged 1.2 ppg, 0.8 rpg, 0.4 apg, and 0.1 spg.

The Chicago Bulls won 58 and lost 24, finishing in 3rd place in the Central Division of the Eastern Conference and with the 3rd best record in the Eastern Conference. In the playoffs, they lost in the Eastern Conference finals.

C Jeff Gilbert was on the Iowa Energy roster of the DBL the entire year. He played in 30 of their 48 games, but only averaged 9.3 mpg, 1.7 ppg, 1.7 rpg, 0.3 apg, 0.3 spg, and 0.2 bpg.

The Iowa Energy won 21 and lost 27, finishing in 2nd place of the Central Division of the DBL.

2019-2020 New Hampshire Wildcats Season

Postby PointGuard » Sat Nov 30, 2013 2:33 am

In my first season (2017-2018) at New Hampshire we improved from 7 wins the year before (7-21) to 13 wins (13-16) and in my second season (2018-2019) we had 9 more wins (22-9) plus made it to the Big Dance (losing in the first round). So we would appear to be on the right trajectory for a very good season in 2019-2020. I’m concerned that Nate Augustus will transfer though, and that would definitely deplete our talent pool at the point guard position. While he whines a little too much, it’s mainly because he wants to be on the court a lot, so I’m not really bothered by his comments. But he’s an unhappy camper…not getting along well with his teammates and has never warmed to me.

With a total of 8 years now as a head coach, my record is 157-86 (.646) with four 20+ win seasons, 5 conference titles, and 5 NCAA appearances.

Both teams I’ve coached have shown good improvement during my tenures. I’m hopeful the improvement that’s occurred thus far at New Hampshire will continue this year, we return to the NCAA Tournament, and move deeper into it.

Recruiting Plans

Postby PointGuard » Sat Nov 30, 2013 2:34 am

We’ll have 5 seniors graduating this year, 4 of whom are on scholarship. Therefore we will have 4 scholarships to fill this coming year.

We buy the National Report and the Atlantic East Report.

We schedule to attend the Indy Elite Camp and the Big Apple Showcase this summer.

Transfers

Postby PointGuard » Sat Nov 30, 2013 2:39 am

Bad news! Two of our players are transferring. Not only PG Nate Augustus (which was expected), but also SF Jerod Ryan. That’s going to mean we have a pretty short bench this coming season. We’ll look closely at available transfer players, but they won’t be any help for this season.

We sign two transfer players:

PG Kueth Kirtz, 6-0 So, Taylorville, IL, 2.9 GPA. In freshman year at Southern Illinois, he scored 17.1 ppg, had 4.1 rpg, and 1.2 apg. He won the Freshman of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, and was selected for the 1st Team All-Conference Team for the Missouri Valley Conference. He’s an excellent passer and good ball-handler plus he has a good outside shot. He has a good work ethic and personality.

SG Albert Howard, 6-5 Jr, New Martinsville, WV, 1.6 GPA. In his freshman year at Virginia, he scored 12.3 ppg, pulled down 3.0 rpg and had 1.2 apg. He was academically ineligible for his entire sophomore year. He has a sweet outside shot. He has very good passing skills, is a good rebounder, and is strong defensively. He has a strong work ethic and a good personality.
