As I’ve now been in the league for five years I thought I would take a short break and go through the records that have happened in the previous half a decade.

Most Points in a Game:
Kevin Durant (OKC) – 68 vs. Philadelphia 2014
Kevin Durant (OKC) – 67 vs. Atlanta, 2014
Kevin Durant (OKC) – 64 vs. Washington 2014
Kevin Durant (OKC) – 63 vs. Denver 2015
Kevin Durant (OKC) – 58 vs. New Orleans 2015

Kevin Durant’s 2012 season put him in 10th position for most points in a single season with 2784, closely followed by his 2013 season (2775 points, 12th all time) and 2015 season (2728 points, 14th all time).

Most Assists in a Game:

Grevis Vasquez (MIL) – 25 vs. Orlando 2014
Chris Paul (NYK) – 23 vs. Sacramento 2013
Derrick Rose (CHI) – 22 vs. Dallas 2013
Chris Paul (NYK) – 21 vs. Portland 2012

Ricky Rubio’s 2014 season of 904 assists puts him at 24th all time in most assists in a single season.

Most Rebounds in a Game:
Serge Ibaka (OKC) – 28 vs. Toronto 2013
Kevin Love (MIN) – 27 vs. Detroit 2014

Anderson Varejao (CLE) – 9 vs. Chicago 2012
DeMarcus Cousins (SAC) – 9 vs. Brooklyn 2013

Iman Shumpert’s 2016 season put him in 8th position for most steals in a single season with 249. He is also 15th on the list with 235 steals. Oddly enough, DeMarcus Cousins is 21st on the list with 232 steals in 2013.

Most Blocks in a Game:
JaVale McGee (DEN) – 16 vs. Phoenix 2014

I don’t renounce anyone because we only have two free agents in Mike Conley and Ricardo Marquardt and I want to get them back.

It’s Summer League time and I would really like to see Travis Ross dominate against this competition.

Our first game is a 98-79 win over Washington as Travis Ross puts up good numbers but shoots terribly, with 16 points and 10 rebounds on 7/20 FGs. Joe Abney has 12 points while Josh Brown put up 20 points for us. Zamiro Kettle has a night to forget shooting 3/19 from the field for 7 points for the Wizards.

Even though Utah doesn’t have Mark Lewis they still beat us 98-84 with Kris Joseph leading the way for the Jazz with 21 points while Josh Brown again steps up with 13 points and 7 rebounds. Travis Ross was terrible with 8 points (4/12 FG) and 7 rebounds.

We get back on track with a 110-106 win over Brooklyn with Travis Ross scoring 26 points and grabbing 6 rebounds while Joe Abney was his running mate with 19 points. Donte Rock had 18 points as he battled Ross all night long.

Travis Ross went 14/18 from the field for 30 points and 7 rebounds as we beat Phoenix 100-90. Our old players Kent Harris and Ernest Davis were in the Suns line-up with Harris having 15 points and Davis dishing out five assists. Second pick Alexander Verhaeren was average with 14 points and five fouls.

Our last summer league game was a loss, but not before we came back from 27 points in the third quarter to lose 105-101 to Detroit. Travis Ross was non-existant with 10 points but Joe Abney picked up the slack with 20 points. Marcus Collins for the Pistons had 25 points while the summer league MVP Bart Flanders had 19 points and 12 rebounds.

Joe Abney was up and down which I thought he would be, he is just not at the point where he can be counted on consistently but I’m worried about Travis Ross. He had some good games (a 26 point night and a 30 point night) but that was countered by his 16 points on 7/20 shooting, an eight and a ten point night which is very good against summer league guys.

So I trade him, in one of my biggest steals ever.

Memphis trade:
C Travis Ross

LA Lakers trade:
C Ernest Jameson

Winner – Memphis. Jameson was All NBA First Team last season, averaging 20 points and 12 rebounds a game. Ross has all of the potential to be a great player but come on, Jameson is an MVP talent. Reports from Los Angeles are that Jameson has become a cancer in the locker room, talking down to his teammates and just being a terrible teammate.

I’m so happy with this trade and in addition to getting Ricky Rubio and Josh Smith I can really see this team going all the way (gulp).

Onto free agency I’m really only interested in re-signing Mike Conley and Ricardo Marquardt while filling in the team because our starters are set. Maybe a decent player will fall for us to pick up with our MLE but I’m not too fussed. The top ten free agents are –

C Dwight Howard
PF Blake Griffin
PF Chris Drexler*
C Andrew Bynum
PG Russell Westbrook
SG John Johnson*
PF Brennan Weber*
PF Paul Millsap
SG James Harden
PF Serge Ibaka

Very good crop of free agents this year, not as good as last year but nothing can be as good as last year.

In the first news in what seemed like forever, Philadelphia has signed Gabe White to an offer sheet worth nearly $50 million over four years. Big steal if the Sixers can get White as he has been an All Star already and is a great scorer. I offer Ricardo a four year deal worth $14 million and Jake Chase a four year MLE deal worth just over $20 million. I know we already have Avery Bradley and Joe Abney but Chase is a great talent and importantly a great defender.

The next day is the re-signing day it seems as not only did Russell Westbrook, Brennan Weber (way overpaid), John Johnson and Derrick Rose all re-sign with their respective teams but Ricardo Marquardt re-signed with us which is the major news of the day.

Orlando doesn’t match Philadelphia’s offer for Gabe White so he is off to play for the 76ers next season, huge steal for Philly.

The next day Dwight Howard, Andrew Bynum and James Harden all re-sign with their teams and this free agency is being a real snorer.

Massive news! I said it was a snorer but no more. Blake Griffin has decided to go to Brooklyn and fight for the Nets on a four year maximum deal. On the same day Tyreke Evans also packed his bags for Brooklyn, signing a four year, $40 million contract.

Dammit. On the tender offer signing day Jake Chase decided he would stay at Chicago for one more year and then test free agency with lots and lots of other youngsters. On the plus side, Mike Conley re-signed with us, as Paul Millsap and Serge Ibaka went back to their own teams. I offer the MLE to Deron Williams because honestly, he is the best player available at the moment.

How about that. Deron Williams signs with us for a 4 year, $20 million contract which is simply amazing. I can see him starting at SG next to Ricky. I also sign Nikola Vucevic to a two year minimum deal. Jrue Holiday makes the Pistons much better as they get him on a steal, 3 years, $9 million. Total, not per year.

I round out the roster by signing Dante Cunningham and with 14 players I’m done.

After free agency I offer a three year extension to Ernest Jameson for a shade under $10 million a year which is cheaper than what he would be getting if he went unrestricted so we are both happy.

Training camp has come and gone and Joe Abney still isn’t there yet and with such a crowded backcourt we have I’m going to send him down to the D-League again. Have patience Joe your time will come! Ernest Jameson looks like he is what he is now, I don’t think there will be any more growing for him. The rest of the team looks tip top but Josh Smith is still recovering from his ACL tear which will keep him out for another four or so months.

The pre-season rankings have us third in the West which is fantastic, but I still don’t understand the hype surrounding Sacramento who they have picked second.

Eastern Conference Pre-Season Rankings
1. Detroit Pistons
2. Washington Wizards
3. Cleveland Cavaliers
4. Charlotte Bobcats
5. Milwaukee Bucks
Last – Miami Heat

All pretty good selections but I have to point out that Philadelphia’s starting five consists of four small forwards and a centre. Balance isn’t a word used very often in Philly.

Western Conference Pre-Season Rankings
1. Utah Jazz
2. Sacramento Kings
3. Memphis Grizzlies
4. New Orleans Hornets
5. Minnesota Timberwolves
Last – Phoenix Suns

As I said before, the Kings really don’t look that good with the Thunder probably taking their position in the top five.

So here is your 2017-2018 “Let’s take the whole damn thing out” Memphis Grizzlies –

PG – Ricky Rubio
SG – Deron Williams
SF – Paul George
PF – Ricardo Marquardt
C – Ernest Jameson
6th – Avery Bradley
7th – Nikola Vucevic
8th – Mike Conley
9th – Brandon Rush
10th – Darrell Arthur
11th – Joe Johnson
12th – Dante Cunningham
D-League – Joe Abney
IR – Josh Smith (106 days to go)

Getting Jameson is a massive double edged sword because he has a terrible attitude, like cancer level. If we keep winning then it shouldn't be too much of a problem but if we get into a funk early he could make things much, much worse. That's why the Lakers traded him, they wanted to get rid of him but wanted to get something for him, not just dump him for a pick.

On the first day of games there has already been two trades, with one sort of cleaning up the 76ers balance issues.

LA Clippers trade:
PF Jordan Hill
SF Julian Johnson

Philadelphia trade:
SG Landry Fields
2018 2nd round pick

Winner – Clippers. Fields has bounced back from his terrible form in Toronto and is now starting for the Clips while Philly still doesn’t have the right balance to be a contending team.

Atlanta trade:
SG Murman Andronikov

Denver trade:
2018 1st round pick

Winner – Atlanta. Murman isn’t going to be missed while the Denver pick could possibly be in the top five with the way the team is put together this year.

Good start to our season with a 114-73 win over Dallas as Deron Williams put up 28 points and 8 assists at the SG position. Ricardo Marquardt was really good starting at PF with 10 points, 13 rebounds and 3 blocks. Brandon Jennings was the only Mavericks player in double figures with 29 points as we held them to 33% from the field and 9% from three (2/22)!

Memphis Grizzlies 1-0

The next night we go into Houston and come back from 10 points down to win by eight, 109-101. Paul George was everywhere with 37 points and 8 rebounds and Ricky Rubio had a stat filling night with 14 points, 7 assists, 5 rebounds and 5 steals. James Harden had 30 points for the losers while Jeremy Lamb and Damon McMaster combined for 33 points off the bench.

Memphis Grizzlies 2-0

It’s the Ricky Rubio vs. Damian Lillard match-up and our guy won easily as we demolish the Timberwolves 119-75 in a massive statement game. Ricky had 18 points and 8 assists while keeping Lillard to only 10 points on 3/15 shooting. Deron Williams was our best with 34 points in the win. Kevin Love was also held to an awful night, going 1/13 from the field for 10 points and 6 rebounds.

Memphis Grizzlies 3-0

**TRADE**

Chicago trade:
SG Arron Afflalo

Orlando trade:
PF Zach Randolph
2018 2nd round pick

Winner – Orlando. At this stage in his career Randolph is an expiring contract while Afflalo will give the Magic a boost off the bench as their sixth man.

What’s that? Kobe Bryant is on the free agent pile? Well come aboard Kobe, give us your wisdom and work with Joe Abney. I cut Joe Johnson because he has been whinging about his playing time, which is not the best idea for a 12th man. Kobe may be 38 years old and in his 21st season but I would love to see him move into second all time in the scoring list.

It was the Deron Williams and Paul George show and those two pretty much beat Philly by themselves. We won 105-89 as Deron Williams had 30 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals and George had 26 points and 7 rebounds. Avery Bradley has taken to his bench role with massive enthusiasm and had 16 points in 14 minutes tonight. Amir Johnson was the Sixers best with 17 points and 11 rebounds but for some stupid reason Philly has their best player Gabe White coming off the bench and only playing 16 minutes. Stupid.

Memphis Grizzlies 4-0

I have said that Philly and other teams have terrible balance but the Nuggets are THE worst put together team out there. They are starting Harrison Barnes at PG, Wilson Chandler at SG, Perry Jones III at SF, Jon Leuer at PF and Emeka Okafor at C. Atlanta are still laughing after stealing their pick. Anyway we beat them easily 94-76 behind Ricky Rubio’s 17 points, 12 assists and 9 rebounds while Ernest Jameson had 15 points and 15 rebounds. It’s really good to have an elite rebounder on the team like Jameson.

Memphis Grizzlies 5-0

That’s six from six as we beat Phoenix in Phoenix 100-88 as Ricky Rubio decides to shoot the ball more and pours in 26 points to go with his 7 assists. Deron Williams and Paul George combined for 39 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists as well. Nate Roberts is playing out of position at C but still put up 17 points and 14 rebounds with Chris Bosh having an alright game with 12 points and 8 rebounds. Alexander Verhaeren didn’t get any court time as the Suns are bringing him along slowly.

Memphis Grizzlies 6-0

Travis Ross has been assigned to Bakersfield in the D-League, confirming that we did in fact win that trade by a mile.

We come back from an eleven point half time deficit to beat the Clippers 96-91. Rick Rubio is really starting to come into his own with this team, putting up 24 points, 6 assists, 5 rebounds and 4 steals while Nikola Vucevic had 14 points and 6 rebounds in only 17 minutes off the bench. DeAndre Jordan had 17 points and 12 rebounds for Clips but they are a bit lost without Blake Griffin.

Memphis Grizzlies 7-0

**TRADE**

Cleveland trade:
PG Marco Barker

Charlotte trade:
C Derrick Woodward
2018 2nd round pick

Winner – Charlotte. Barker has all the skills and potential to be a quality starting PG in the league after playing behind Kyrie Irving. Too bad he is now backing up Ty Lawson at the champion Bobcats. He is much better than Woodward which is why they won this trade.

Well it was bound to happen, and maybe they heard all of the things I was saying about them before the season but Kings beat us for our first loss 101-93. Marcus Thornton was the best with 27 points while DeMarcus Cousins and Thomas Robinson both doubled up. Paul George had 26 points in the loss but has sprained his finger and will be out for about a week.

Memphis Grizzlies 7-1

That’s two losses in a row with the excellent Hornets stomping us 101-83 as Lewis Vines steals the show with 20 points and 12 assists while keeping Ricky Rubio to 3/16 shooting. Anthony Davis was excellent as usual (12 points, 13 rebounds, 5 blocks) but it was Tiago Splitter who impressed me with 17 points and 7 rebounds. Paul George battled his finger injury with 24 points in the loss.

Memphis Grizzlies 7-2

The next night the 7-1 Spurs come to town and smash them 112-82. Ricky Rubio shakes off his previous game with 21 points and 9 assists as Nikola Vucevic had 17 points and 12 rebounds as Ernest Jameson fouls out early trying to defend Dwight Howard. Speaking of Howard, he didn’t have his best night with 4/14 shooting for 14 points and 7 rebounds.

Memphis Grizzlies 8-2

We’re banged up at the moment with Avery Bradley, Paul George, Dante Cunningham and Ricardo Marquardt all sporting various injuries, and that doesn’t even include Josh Smith who still has three months until he should be fully recovered.

Ernest Jameson had 20 points and 7 rebounds but it was Damian Lillard who got back at Ricky with 17 points, 11 assists and 8 rebounds in Minnesota’s 112-108 come from behind win. Kevin Love still can’t get away from us as he only had 14 points and 11 rebounds. Mike Conley had 16 points and 7 assists in only 16 minutes off the bench.

Memphis Grizzlies 8-3

We don’t let it slip into a losing streak as we take care of Houston 108-87 behind Paul George’s 26 points and 6 rebounds while Ernest Jameson and Ricky Rubio doubled up. James Harden was the best again for the Rockets with 20 points but they just couldn’t get past us after half time.

Memphis Grizzlies 9-3

Where did this game come from? We went ice cold as we went down 95-78 to the very average Magic. We shot 36% from the field with Ricky Rubio being our best with 19 points and 11 rebounds but we just weren’t in it at all. Alfred Abney had 21 points and 8 rebounds and I’m going to be following this guy as I think he will be a great SG in the league.

Memphis Grizzlies 9-4

How about this stat line from Anthony Davis –
33 minutes, 10/17 FG, 0/0 3P, 4/5 FT, 24 points, 22 rebounds, 14 blocks and 3 steals. WOW.

A 20 rebound night from Ernest Jameson couldn’t stop us losing 91-88 to the champs. Rick Carlisle decided to start Deron Williams and Brandon Rush in the back court with Rush scoring 18 points but it’s not what I want for this team. Al Jefferson was solid with 12 points and 12 rebounds in the win.

Memphis Grizzlies 9-5

We lose a heartbreaking one point loss to Atlanta 105-104 as they score six points in the last 65 seconds to take the win. Demond Lewis had 21 points and 21 rebounds in the win but it was Mike Lloyd off the bench with 13 points that did it for them. Deron Williams had 28 points in the loss, with Paul George putting up 23 points and 11 rebounds.

Memphis Grizzlies 9-6

A 114-87 win over Milwaukee gets us back on track as Paul George nearly gets a triple double with 24 points, 8 rebounds, 8 assists and 5 steals in the win while Ricardo Marquardt is relishing his starting role with 8 points, 12 rebounds and 5 blocks. Thomas Cooper was the Bucks’ best with 14 points and 10 rebounds but shot only 5/15 from the floor.

Memphis Grizzlies 10-6

After starting the month 7-0 we went 3-6 for the rest and I think the reason was because we played some very good teams at the end of the month, a lot away from Memphis. We’re currently fourth in the West with the surging Jazz out in front at 12-1 for the month, followed by New Orleans and San Antonio, both on 10-4. Denver are obviously last with a 1-15 record.

In the East Detroit have taken the early lead with a 13-2 record with Boston (11-4) and Toronto (9-5) not far behind. Denver has some competition or the worst team in the league as Miami are 1-13 and the Sixers are 2-14. Miami hasn’t won a home game (0-6) while Philly hasn’t won an away game (0-7).

Memphis Top Points
Paul George – 19.9
Deron Williams – 19.5
Ricky Rubio – 14.3

Memphis Top Assists
Ricky Rubio – 6.6
Deron Williams – 5.5
Paul George – 3.1

Memphis Top Rebounds
Ernest Jameson – 8.7
Paul George – 7.4
Ricardo Marquardt – 6.9

As you can see, very much a team effort so far.

League Top Efficiency
Kevin Durant (OKC) – 30.5 (33.9 points, 1.6 assists, 8.3 rebounds, 1.2 steals, 1.0 block)
Anthony Davis (NOH) – 30.1 (19.1 points, 2.1 assists, 12.4 rebounds, 2.1 steals, 5.1 blocks)
Derrick Favors (UTA) – 27.4 (22.5 points, 1.3 assists, 13.2 rebounds, 1.6 steals, 2.5 blocks)

Rookie Top Effiency
Damon McMaster (HOU) – 10.7 (10.4 points, 0.4 assists, 4.7 rebounds, 0.3 steals, 0.1 blocks)
Marcello Locatelli (MIA) – 10.5 (8.6 points, 3.1 assists, 4.9 rebounds, 0.7 steals, 0.6 blocks)
Casey Floyd (ORL) – 8.7 (9.0 points, 0.8 assists, 4.3 rebounds, 0.6 steals, 0.5 blocks)

November Player of the Month – Kevin Durant, Oklahoma City Thunder – 33.9 points, 1.6 assists, 8.3 rebounds, 1.2 steals and 1.0 block per game.

November Rookie of the Month – Marcello Locatelli, Miami Heat – 8.6 points, 3.1 assists, 4.9 rebounds, 0.7 steals and 0.6 blocks per game.

We finally beat the Hornets! To make things better we got out to a 22 point lead in our 114-103 win and that makes me so happy. Deron Williams had 28 points and 8 assists while Ricky Rubio was so close to a triple double with 11 points, 12 assists and 9 rebounds. Eric Gordon is coming off the bench because New Orleans are starting Lewis Vines and Charles Canady together, which is fine because Canady is 6’6” and can handle other SGs. Oh yeah, what I was going to say was Gordon had 27 points in 23 minutes off the bench.

Memphis Grizzlies 11-6

If I say that we lose 113-96 to the Thunder you would ask, “How many points did Durant get?” I would answer that KD put up 46 points and 11 rebounds in the win. Russell Westbrook also torched us with 20 points on seven shots. Deron Williams was our best with 29 points but when a team goes 51% from the field and 53% from three it is really hard to keep up with them.

Memphis Grizzlies 11-7

After a 30-8 second quarter the game was essentially over so it was great to see some of our other guys playing big minutes in our 105-79 win over the hopeless Suns. Nikola Vucevic was our best with 17 points and 10 rebounds off the bench while Paul George had 19 points and 11 rebounds in three quarters. Chris Bosh was Phoenix’s best with 13 points but we just demolished them.

Memphis Grizzlies 12-7

Bradley Beal is the newest 50 point scorer, going 19/27 from the field for exactly 50 points in the Wizard’s 127-124 loss to Minnesota.

Holy moly we put up 131 points on the Warriors in our 131-93 win. Deron Williams had 41 points as we shoot 50/79 (63%) from the field and an astonishing 16/29 (55%) from outside the arc. Golden State just could not believe how good we shot. Let’s hope this is an indication of going forward.

Memphis Grizzlies 13-7

Speaking of playing well, a few people will be happy to hear that Wesley Fields has exploded into the limelight with the Blazers, averaging 14.5 points, 7.0 assists, 6.2 rebounds, 0.9 steals and 1.8 blocks per game but more importantly shooting at a respectable 43.7% from the field. I guess he just needed a change of scenery to show his true colours.

We won against Dallas 116-87 behind Paul George’s 30 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 blocks and 4 steals but that wasn’t the big story of the game, which belonged to Dallas bench player Jon Camara. This guy has played 137 games in five years, but tonight put up 34 points and shooting 18/22 from the foul line. He shot 22 free throws for a guy off the bench! Amazing!

Memphis Grizzlies 14-7

Miami are 3-16 on the season and we make it 3-17 with our 106-76 smackdown. Deron Williams had 31 points while Paul George had 18 points and 12 rebounds in the win. David Lee is playing centre because they don’t have anyone else and put up 13 points and 9 rebounds.

Memphis Grizzlies 15-7

I’ve really been impressed with Paul George’s rebounding numbers. Sure I knew he can score and steal the ball but he is averaging 7.6 boards a game at the SF position, going along with Ricardo’s 6.5 rebounds and Ernest’s 7.9 rebounds a game.

That’s five wins in a row with a 105-93 win over Golden State. Paul George must have heard me talk about his rebounding as he had 35 points and 15 rebounds in this game, while Ernest Jameson had 20 points and 12 rebounds of his own. Steph Curry was the only Warrior that stood up with 29 points in the loss.

Memphis Grizzlies 16-7

**TRADE**

Detroit trade:
C Timofey Mozgov
2018 2nd round pick

LA Clippers trade:
PG Changa Hendricks

Winner – Clippers. It is a little bit crowded in the centre stocks for the Clips now with Enes Kanter, DeAndre Jordan and Mozgov but they won the trade hands down. Not only has #2 pick Hendricks now on his fourth team in three years he is stuck behind Jrue Holiday and Brandon Knight for any playing time. Good luck to him.

We go into the desert to play the 4-18 Suns and they put up a huge fight, coming back from 28 points down to snatch a three point lead before we snuffed out their light to win 112-106. Ricky Rubio had 23 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals in the win put it was Nate Roberts who stole the show with 28 points on 18/20 free throws.

Memphis Grizzlies 17-7

**TRADE**

San Antonio trade:
PG Grevis Vasquez
SG Jarrett Jack

New York trade:
C Anderson Varejao
2018 2nd round pick

Winner – Both, but really neither. The Spurs trade away their starting PG for a starting PF who is really a C while the Knicks trade away their starting C for a starting SG who is really a PG. Not the best for either team.

Kevin Durant scores eight points less than his average (25) which means that we beat the Thunder 108-87 behind Deron Williams and Paul George who both scored 22 points. Russell Westbrook had 20 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists in the loss.

Memphis Grizzlies 18-7

It’s Ernest Jameson vs. Travis Ross as we beat the Lakers 110-103 but not before they go on a 35-21 run in the final term to make things interesting. Ross had 12 points, 10 rebounds and 3 blocks but Jameson beat him with 15 points, 14 rebounds and 2 blocks.

Memphis Grizzlies 19-7

Great, the next night we go into Utah to play the 23-2 Jazz who are currently on a 17-1 streak. Hey, we’re 10-1 in the last eleven so it could be interesting. Lebron James had 28 points, Mark Lewis had 21 points and 14 rebounds as we get pounded 112-94. Derrick Favors added 12 points and 15 rebounds as well as that frontcourt could be one of the best of all time, that’s how good they are. Deron Williams had 28 points but they were just too good.

Memphis Grizzlies 19-8

[OOC – Seriously, their SF, PF, C starters could be one of the best of all time. Lebron James is a five star player and, well, Lebron James. Derrick Favors is a five star player and has averaged 20 points and 12 rebounds for the last five years while Mark Lewis is a four and a half star 20 year old who is already averaging 15 points and 10 rebounds in his second year. It will be interesting to see how they go money wise because Lebron is on a max contract while Favors is a free agent this coming off season and will get a max contract while when Lewis becomes a free agent he will definitely get a max contract.]

We get back to our winning ways with a 101-73 away win over Brooklyn with Ricky Rubio having 32 points in the win. Deron Williams didn’t have the best return to his old club with 14 points on 6/26 shooting. Blake Griffin put up 21 points and 13 rebounds in the loss.

Memphis Grizzlies 20-8

Another game going to an elite team’s home as we lose to Detroit 100-90. The Pistons got out to a 29 point lead before we went on a 38-21 last quarter run to make it look respectable. John Johnson had 24 points and 6 rebounds while Ernest Jameson was our best with 18 points and 21 rebounds.

Memphis Grizzlies 20-9

We go into San Antonio and take care of business with a 118-106 classy win over the Spurs. Ricky Rubio continues to fill up the cup with 29 points, 8 assists and 6 rebounds while Ernest Jameson and Paul George topped 20 points. Dwight Howard had 29 points and 8 rebounds but I’m sure the Spurs are missing Grevis Vasquez right about now.

Memphis Grizzlies 21-9

Some statistics for you from our win over Portland –

FG: MEM – 49%, POR 33%
3P: MEM – 43%, POR – 27%
Rebounds: MEM – 53, POR – 37
Turnovers : MEM – 11, POR – 20

Equals a massive 112-66 win. Paul George had 22 points, leading six other Grizzlies in double figures as the Blazers had a night to forget. Wesley Fields was the best with 14 points and 6 turnovers as one of only four players that shot 50% or better.

Memphis Grizzlies 22-9

After a 12-3 record we are up to third in the West, behind Utah (25-4) and New Orleans (22-8). Phoenix are still last with a 5-24 record with the Lakers not far ahead with a 8-23 record.

In the East, Detroit has opened up a 4.5 game lead over second placed Boston with a 24-6 record but the exciting thing is that second placed Boston is only 3.5 games ahead of eighth placed Orlando. Philadelphia has taken over last place with a 4-28 record with Miami on 5-24 for the race for the worst record in the league.

Memphis Top Points
Paul George – 20.3
Deron Williams – 19.9
Ricky Rubio – 15.0

Memphis Top Assists
Ricky Rubio – 7.1
Deron Williams – 5.3
Paul George – 3.3

Memphis Top Rebounds
Ernest Jameson – 8.8
Paul George – 7.5
Ricardo Marquardt – 5.9

Josh Smith has about a month and a half before he is fully healed the doctors say which is great news.

League Top Efficiency
Kevin Durant (OKC) – 29.5 (32.7 points, 1.5 assists, 8.5 rebounds, 1.1 steals, 1.1 blocks)
Anthony Davis (NOH) – 28.9 (20.2 points, 1.9 assists, 11.6 rebounds, 2.3 steals, 4.0 blocks)
Kyrie Irving (CLE) – 26.4 (21.5 points, 10.1 assists, 4.6 rebounds, 1.1 steals, 0.5 blocks)

Rookie Top Efficiency
Marcello Locatelli (MIA) – 12.6 (10.2 points, 3.3 assists, 5.2 rebounds, 0.9 steals, 0.5 blocks)
Damon McMaster (HOU) – 10.8 (9.6 points, 0.5 assists, 5.0 rebounds, 0.4 steals, 0.2 blocks)
Jeff Cunningham (LAL) – 8.3 (7.5 points, 0.6 assists, 3.3 rebounds, 0.8 steals, 0.6 blocks)

First Round of NBA Draft Prospects
1. C Bryce Metcalf (Iowa), Sophomore, 6’11”, 279lbs
2. C Emmett Emerson (Memphis), Sophomore, 6’11”, 268lbs
3. SF Sam Jennings (Houston), Sophomore, 6’6”, 230lbs
4. SG Varlam Cherkezov (Estonia), 20 years old, 6’2”, 224lbs
5. SF Cedric Watson (Dayton), Freshman, 6’6”, 201lbs

Thoughts – At this stage I would put Emerson above Metcalf but they are very similar, while Cherkezov looks very nice, albeit a little undersized. Watson is unbelievably raw and will need to produce a bit more for NBA teams to think about taking him in the top five.

December Player of the Month – Kevin Durant, Oklahoma City Thunder – 31.4 points, 8.8 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 1.0 steal and 1.3 blocks per game.

December Rookie of the Month – Marcello Locatelli, Miami Heat – 11.8 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.0 steal and 0.4 blocks per game.

Ricky Rubio leads the team in rebounds, assists and steals in our 108-93 win over Orlando with 11,8, 4 to go with his 5 points. Avery Bradley was electric off the bench with 12 points in only eight minutes. Alfred Abney is playing at SF which isn’t his best position but still put up 15 points and 13 rebounds in the loss.

Memphis Grizzlies 23-9

We are very good at home, and the Bulls realised that in our 101-76 win. Deron Williams had 20 points and 11 assists but I’m really impressed with Avery Bradley and Nikola Vucevic off the bench. They only get 15-20 minutes a game (a big downgrade for Bradley) but they don’t complain and play their hearts out. Tonight they both put up 12 points in 18 minutes. My free agency love Jake Chase had 21 points in the loss while Royce White had a game to forget with 2 points (0/5 FG) and six turnovers.

Memphis Grizzlies 24-9

Away from home we aren’t as flash as we go down to Toronto 90-80 but that score flatters us as we were down by 24 points at one stage. Jeremy Lin was so close to a triple double with 14 points, 10 assists and 9 rebounds while Kevin Seraphin and Andrea Bargnani both doubled up. Ernest Jameson, Deron Williams and Ricky Rubio combined to shoot 13/52 from the field which is awful.

Memphis Grizzlies 24-10

Miami are 5-27 but when a team is at home anything could happen. Anything did happen as the Heat scored six points in the last two minutes to snatch the game from us 94-92. David Lee had 21 points and 13 rebounds while Josh Harrellson stepped up with 17 points and 8 rebounds starting at centre. Paul George was our best with 20 points but I’m quite annoyed that we lost to this team.

Memphis Grizzlies 24-11

Boston probably thought they could knock us off with our loss to Miami but man, where they wrong. We smashed them from the starting to win 128-99 as we shot 32/38 from the foul line. Paul George had 34 points and 10 rebounds while Deron Williams and Ricky Rubio combined for 40 points, 20 assists and 10 rebounds. Nice symmetry there. Jared Sullinger was the Celtics best with 19 points off the bench.

Memphis Grizzlies 25-11

Philadelphia are 4-32 but we don’t make the same mistake as the Miami game and stomp them 118-91. Deron Williams had 34 points in the win while Ernest Jameson was uber-efficient with 24 points on 11/12 shooting and 0 turnovers. Vitaly Ekomov was the best for the Sixers with 21 points but Gabe White is still coming off the bench and I won’t be surprised if he demands a trade soon.

Memphis Grizzlies 26-11

Anthony Davis had another amazing game, this time racking up a 5x5 stat with 32 points, 9 blocks, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals in their 130-88 massacre of Phoenix.

Speaking of amazing games, we went into triple overtime against Minnesota. Kevin Love was outstanding with 40 points and 20 rebounds while Damian Lillard put up 17 points and 9 assists before fouling out, as did Monta Ellis. Paul George led the way for us with 34 points while Ernest Jameson fouled out in 25 minutes, not before scoring 20 points. The players that won the game for their team – Dante Cunningham and Nikola Vucevic. Both Jameson and Ricardo Marquardt fouled out super early so these two super subs combined for 16 points and 17 rebounds in our 132-128 win.

Memphis Grizzlies 27-11

I thought we would have had a letdown game the next night against New York but we stayed strong and won 96-81 against the Knicks. Paul George had 21 points and while Ricky Rubio shot badly (2/12 for four points) he did have 11 assists, 8 rebounds and 5 steals. Camara Brinker was the best for the Knicks as the young centre had 17 points, 9 rebounds and 4 blocks in the loss.

Memphis Grizzlies 28-11

What’s this? Kenneth Faried is on the trading block? So is Chris Drexler from Washington? Hmm, I believe that I could get Faried through Drexler but is it really worth it. I hit the phones...

Memphis trade:
PF Josh Smith (WAS)
PG Ricky Rubio (WAS)
PG Mike Conley (WAS)
2020 1st round pick (WAS)
2020 2nd round pick (WAS)

Washington trade:
PG John Wall (MEM)
PF Chris Drexler (DEN)
C Nene Hilario (DEN)

Denver trade:
PF Kenneth Faried (MEM)

Winner – Washington, then Memphis. They wanted to get rid of Drexler because of his toxic attitude so trading him for Josh Smith really isn’t a downgrade; they will just have to wait a month until Smith returns from injury. Trading Wall for Rubio is a push so they don’t lose any ground.

The Nuggets did lose this trade because of Drexler’s attitude but he might like it in Denver because the team will run primarily through him. I’m over the moon with this trade because of the talent we receive. Faried still has over a month (36 days) until he can return from his torn MCL but when he comes back watch out. Also, John Wall is leading the league in assists per game (12.0) and while he isn’t as good a defender as Ricky he is a much better scorer. I sign AJ Price to back up Wall as well as bring Joe Abney back from the D-League. This team is well and truly a championship contender.

Our first game since the trade is a 99-76 easy win over the Clippers as Ernest Jameson taking out the PotG award with 22 points and 13 rebounds as we outrebound LA 55-41. John Wall was fairly average in the first game with 13 points (4/15 FG), 7 rebounds and 5 assists but did block three shots. I’m sure he will gel with the team in due time. William Jones top scored for the Clips with 15 points but this team is very much a team in transition.

Memphis Grizzlies 29-11

In Ricky Rubio’s first game as a Wizard he had 11 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists before fouling out trying to guard Kyrie Irving. It didn’t take Chris Drexler long to get going as he put up 33 points and 12 rebounds in Denver’s 114-111 win. All they need now is a proper PG as they have Harrison Barnes starting there.

For the second time this season Demond Lewis puts up a 20/20 game with 25 points and 21 rebounds as we lose to Atlanta 94-86 as we just can’t get past them. Deron Williams and John Wall combine for 38 points on 36 shots but no-one else did much.

Memphis Grizzlies 29-12

Kevin Durant scores only 17 points while Russell Westbrook had 22 points on only nine shots (15/18 FT) as we go down again, this time a 88-85 squeaker to OKC. Ernest Jameson had 25 points and 16 rebounds for us but our backcourt of Williams and Wall combined to go 5/31 from the field. We just have to keep out head above water until Kenneth Faried returns from injury.

Memphis Grizzlies 29-13

That’s more like it. John Wall explodes for 26 points, 8 assists, 7 rebounds and 4 blocks as we get back on track with a 95-88 win over Portland. Ricardo Marquardt and Ernest Jameson only shot 11 shots between them but combined to grab 25 boards. Spencer Hawes was the Blazers’ best with 24 points and 9 rebounds but LaMarcus Aldridge and Wesley Fields combined to shoot 11/36 from the field.

Memphis Grizzlies 30-13

It seems that whenever Ernest Jameson has a great game we lose, and it happens again as EJ had 23 points and 12 rebounds in our 116-105 loss to Milwaukee after the Bucks outscored us 41-22 in the final quarter as we imploded late. Rajon Rondo had 20 points and 7 assists while Thomas Cooper has moved to the bench and had 13 points in 19 minutes.

Memphis Grizzlies 30-14

We still have some work to do against teams like Cleveland as they humble us 90-76. Andrew Bynum had 19 points and 17 rebounds while their other superstar Kyrie Irving had 12 points and 13 assists. John Wall tried to keep up with him with 18 points but couldn’t sustain it. Kenneth Faried played his first game of the season, limited to only 23 minutes for 4 points and 5 rebounds but it was amazing to see him play.

Memphis Grizzlies 30-15

The Knicks had seven players in double figures as they sweep us aside in New York 112-99 and the fans let me know all about it. Rudy Gay led the way with 19 points which was matched with our highest scorer in John Wall.

Memphis Grizzlies 30-16

We finish the month with another loss, this time a 112-100 home defeat to Boston. Kenneth Faried is getting better every game, this time having 24 points and 7 rebounds as Al Horford took out the Player of the Game award with 20 points and 7 rebounds. We don’t need to panic as this team is constructed for the latter part of the season instead of right now.

Memphis Grizzlies 30-17

After a four game (current) losing streak we finish the month 8-8 and moved down to fifth in the conference but when we click, look out. Utah is still on top with a 37-7 record with New Orleans three games behind and the daylight. Phoenix are waiting until next season, currently sitting on 7-38.

In the East Detroit have broken away at 34-9, a whole 4.5 games ahead of second placed Cleveland. There is a battle between second and fourth with the Cavs only two games ahead of fourth placed Toronto while fifth placed Orlando is only three and half games ahead of eleventh placed Atlanta and makes for an exciting rest of the season.

Memphis Top Points
Paul George – 19.9
Deron Williams – 19.1
Ernest Jameson – 13.6

John Wall – 10.8
Deron Williams – 5.5

Memphis Top Rebounds

Here is a rundown of the traded players –

Kenneth Faried (MEM) – 3 games, 11.7 points, 1.3 assists, 5.3 rebounds, 1.0 steal, 0.7 blocks (19 days until 100%)
Chris Drexler (DEN) – 9 games, 22.1 points, 8.1 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 0.4 steals, 1.4 blocks
Nene Hilario (DEN) – 9 games, 12.8 points, 7.3 rebounds, 0.8 assists, 1.0 steal, 1.0 block
Ricky Rubio (WAS) – 8 games, 12.5 points, 5.4 rebounds, 11.0 assists, 2.8 steals, 0.5 blocks
Mike Conley (WAS) – 8 games, 4.3 points, 1.1 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 0.5 steals, 0.1 blocks
Josh Smith (WAS) – 8 games, 6.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, 0.6 assists, 0.9 steals, 1.8 blocks (13 days until 100%)

League Top Efficiency
Anthony Davis (NOH) – 30.2 (21.4 points, 2.2 assists, 11.3 rebounds, 2.3 steals, 4.2 blocks)
Kevin Durant (OKC) – 28.9 (32.0 points, 1.5 assists, 8.5 rebounds, 1.2 steals, 1.2 blocks)
Kyrie Irving (CLE) – 25.8 (20.8 points, 10.5 assists, 4.6 rebounds, 1.2 steals, 0.7 blocks)

Rookie Top Efficiency
Marcello Locatelli (MIA) – 11.8 (10.2 points, 3.2 assists, 4.9 rebounds, 0.9 steals, 0.4 blocks)
Damon McMaster (HOU) – 10.4 (9.2 points, 0.5 assists, 4.5 rebounds, 0.3 steals, 0.2 blocks)
Jeff Cunningham (LAL) – 8.9 (8.3 points, 0.6 assists, 3.4 rebounds, 0.8 steals, 0.8 blocks)

Second Round of NBA Draft Prospects (previous rank in brackets)
1. (1) C Bryce Metcalf (Iowa), Sophomore, 6’11”, 279lbs
2. (2) C Emmett Emerson (Memphis), Sophomore, 6’11”, 268lbs
3. (NR) SG Ron Winston (Bradley), Senior, 6’8”, 217lbs
4. (NR) SF Brian Williams (California), Junior, 6’9”, 211lbs
5. (5) SF Cedric Watson (Dayton), Freshman, 6’6”, 201lbs

Thoughts – The two centres are breaking away as the top two similar to the Mark Lewis and Travis Ross draft. Winston looks legit so far, averaging 22 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists a game so far.

January Player of the Month – Kevin Durant, Oklahoma City Thunder – 30.7 points, 8.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.3 blocks per game.

January Rookie of the Month – Marcello Locatelli, Miami Heat – 10.0 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 1.0 steal and 0.1 blocks per game.

We’re over the cap at the moment by just a shade above $15 million and that isn’t going to cut it with my boss so I’m going to have to slash salary a little. Nothing slaps me in the face at the moment so I’ll keep looking.

There were three Grizz players in double figures but that is all it took it beat Golden State 104-89. Deron Williams had 22 points, 8 assists, 7 rebounds and 8 steals to come achingly close to a quadruple double while John Wall put up 27 points and Paul George scored 26 points. Marc Gasol was the best for the Warriors with 26 points and 9 rebounds but Steph Curry was held to only 9 points.

Memphis Grizzlies 31-17

Indiana comes to town and leaves with their tails between their legs as we humble them 102-86 behind John Wall’s 23 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists. Ernest Jameson and Roy Hibbert battle it out as EJ put up 21 points and 7 rebounds while Roy had 15 points and 12 rebounds. The biggest ‘oops’ was Darren Collison’s 10 turnovers to go with his 18 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists.

Memphis Grizzlies 32-17

Grr, I don’t like losing to bad teams but that is what we did when we went down to Dallas 115-108. Brandon Jennings was awesome with 24 points and 14 assists as Nic Batum helped him out with 26 points. Deron Williams was our top scorer with 24 points.

Memphis Grizzlies 32-18

I make a trade.

Memphis trade:
PG Deron Williams
SG Avery Bradley

Atlanta trade:
SF Antoine Martin
SG Mike Lloyd

Winner – Both. Both teams get an upgrade at a starting position and also gain an important bench player. Pretty good all around.

It’s sad to see Deron and Avery go but I really didn’t like having a two point guard back court. Paul George moves back to SG as Martin can only play SF for some reason. It also gets us out of Bradley’s second year salary as Lloyd is an expiring contract so if we don’t want him next season he can go somewhere else.

Our next game since the trade is against the 41-7 Jazz and it was a track meet. There wasn’t much defence being played, just a lot of fouls. We shoot 56% from the field to their 50% and we still lose 132-120. The worst part (and the part I’m furious about) is that the foul count was 37-17 in their favour, they shot 32/53 from the line to our paltry 19/25. Are you serious? 53 freaking free throws! Lebron has 40 points on 15/18 FTs while Mark Lewis showed his skills with 25 points but shot an embarrassing 3/16 from the foul line. Paul George was our best with 27 points but what I was happy with was Joe Abney getting 24 minutes and scoring 18 points. 53 freaking free throws! This league is rigged.

Memphis Grizzlies 32-19

Apparently you are not allowed to say that the league is rigged or you get fined $25,000, which happened to me. So here is my apology – “I’m sorry that I said that the league is rigged and in no way wanting Lebron James to win another championship because that is where the league gets it revenue from.”

**TRADE**

San Antonio trade:
SG Jordan Crawford
C Greg Oden

Chicago trade:
PF Carlos Boozer
2018 2nd round pick

Winner – Chicago. Even though Boozer will help the Spurs he is owed over $20 million over the next two years and Crawford will help the Bulls as Jake Chase is down for the season.

Paul George is enjoying his move to SG with 28 points, 11 rebounds and 8 assists in our 100-77 win over Chicago. Jordan Crawford didn’t have a good first game, going 3/16 from the field and 1/10 from three.

Memphis Grizzlies 33-19

There were some huge individual games in our 107-82 win over the Lakers, starting with Paul George’s 31 points and 11 rebounds. Next was John Wall’s 10 points and 20 assists while Kenneth Faried coming in last with 13 points, 14 rebounds and 7 blocks. That’s not including Antoine Martin’s 19 points. Very good effort but the guys. Travis Ross was the Lakers’ best with 19 points but only 2 rebounds.

Memphis Grizzlies 34-19

It’s All Star weekend time! I’m excited to see if Paul George or even John Wall can make the All Star team.

Ex-Grizz Kent Harris demolishes the competition in the Slam Dunk Contest, scoring an outrageous 81 points in the final, beating Jamal Howell. Houston’s Johnny Keys led from the start in the Long Distance Shootout and was a worthy winner, beating Philadelphia’s Patrick Mills and Miami’s Jerryd Bayless in the final. Memphis player Brandon Rush competed in the shootout but did not make the final.

In the Rookie/Sophomore game the second year players had this game in their pockets from the first quarter when they went beat the rooks 43-23 in the first term. After that the game fizzled with the Sophomores taking it out 118-90. Ryan Robinson took out the MVP award with 21 points, 17 assists and 8 rebounds in an amazing display while our own Joe Abney started and scored 22 points. Travis Ross also played for the sophs with 7 points and 6 rebounds in nine minutes. Earl Oliver was the best for the rookies with 19 points but they really weren’t in the game at all.

Kyrie Irving was electric with 35 points and 11 assists as the East took out the All Star game 125-104 with Irving obviously taking home the MVP award. Bradley Beal had 19 points while Irving’s teammate Andrew Bynum had 13 points, 13 rebounds and 5 blocks in the win. For the West, Kevin Durant top scored with 20 points while James Harden was close to a triple double with 14 points, 9 assists and 8 rebounds. Paul George was our only All Star, playing 8 minutes and putting up 2 points, 2 rebounds and 2 turnovers.

A few notes about the All Star game –
-Dwight Howard didn’t play even though he is averaging 21 points and 13 rebounds a game, the first time in a looooooong time. The Western centres were DeMarcus Cousins and Mark Lewis.
-Speaking of Lewis, he joined Lebron James and Derrick Favors as the Jazz’s participants.
-First year players – Mark Lewis (UTA), Paul Orvis (TOR, starting), Roy Hibbert (IND) and John Johnson (DET).

Western Conference All Star Starters
Brandon Jennings, Dallas Mavericks
James Harden, Houston Rockets
Kevin Durant, Oklahoma City Thunder
Anthony Davis, New Orleans Hornets
DeMarcus Cousins, Sacramento Kings

Eastern Conference All Star Starters
Kyrie Irving, Cleveland Cavaliers
Bradley Beal, Washington Wizards
Paul Orvis, Toronto Raptors
Blake Griffin, Brooklyn Nets
Andrew Bynum, Cleveland Cavaliers

In our first game back John Wall was angry that he didn’t get picked as an All Star and took it out on Brooklyn in our 117-91 win. Wall had 25 points, 14 assists and 7 rebounds with Antoine Martin helping him out with 20 points. Mike Lloyd had 16 points in only 11 minutes off the bench. Luol Deng is starting at C for some reason and had 21 points while Blake Griffin had 14 points and 14 points in the loss.

Memphis Grizzlies 35-19

Loads of trades happened today with the trade deadline coming around fast.

Cleveland trade:
PF Tristan Thompson

Brooklyn trade:
SG Tyreke Evans

Winner – Cleveland. If the Cavs weren’t all in before they certainly are now. Evans may not be the player everyone thought he could be but he is a very dangerous SG, with a hefty price tage. Thompson is now starting at C which really isn’t very good. Their starting line up is –

PG – SF Michael Call (6’10”)
SG – SF Luol Deng (6’9”)
SF – PF Donte Rock (6’8”)
PF – PF Blake Griffin (6’10”)
C – PF Tristan Thompson (6’9”)

Terrible.

New Orleans trade:
PF Ryan Anderson

Houston trade:
PF Ed Davis

Winner – Houston. A rare slip up from the Hornets as although Davis is a talented player he is a woeful defender, like atrocious bad. Anderson was one of the good guys at New Orleans so their chemistry could be shaken by this deal.

Minnesota trade:
PF Andrew Nicholson
SF CJ Miles

Phoenix trade:
PG Goran Dragic
2018 2nd round pick

Winner – Minnesota. The Suns traded away their only decent PG for another PF which they already have like a billion of. Having Dragic backing up Damian Lillard is a great move by the Wolves.

Oklahoma City trade:
SG Rodney Stuckey
PG Malik Cunningham

Houston trade:
PF Gustavo Ayon
2018 2nd round pick

Winner – Oklahoma City. The Rockets now have three point guards and six shooting guards on their roster in another team with terrible balance. On the other hand the Thunder didn’t have any dependable bench bigs so getting Ayon is a steal and bolsters their championship hopes.

The next day and you guessed it, more trades.

Utah trade:
SF Quincy Miller
SG JR Smith

Brooklyn trade:
SF Cedreric Mapp
2018 2nd round pick

Winner – Utah. Smith and Miller are expirings and nothing else while Mapp is a good player who could become very good in the future. He is only 20 years old in his second season and is already a great shooter. Utah gets better, again.

Oklahoma City trade:
SG Bernard Belton
PF Ike Matthews

Milwaukee trade:
SF Rasheed Miller
2018 2nd round pick

Winner – Oklahoma City. Very similar to the previous trade as the Thunder gets a player of value while the Bucks get cheap expirings.

Minnesota trade:
PF Patrick Patterson
PG Jameer Nelson
2018 2nd round pick

Philadelphia trade:
PF Thaddeus Young

Winner – Philadelphia. Talent wise Minny gets the nod but Young is paid a bundle, too much to be a seventh man. I guess when you are already $33 million over the cap a bit more won’t hurt. Patterson is now the Sixers’ starting PF which sorts out of bit of their balancing issues but goes put Gabe White on the bench again which is dumb.

Cleveland trade:
SG Marshon Brooks
SF Gerald Wallace

Portland trade:
SF Kyle Singler
2018 2nd round pick

Winner – Both. They are both similar in talent and they actually help out both teams. Strange.

This team is really starting to click, shown by out 130-104 dismantling of Houston. John Wall had a blinder with 18 points and 18 assists as we had six players in double figures led by Ernest Jameson’s 23 points on 10/11 shooting. James Harden top scored for the Rockets with 27 points but turned it over 10 times.

Memphis Grizzlies 36-19

Ricky Rubio and Josh Smith come to town with the Wizards but it was our other recruit from the three way trade that did the damage in our 113-91 bruising of Washington. Kenneth Faried is finally 100% healthy and showed it with 31 points and 15 rebounds as Paul George helped him out with 20 points and 15 rebounds of his own. 15 rebounds at the SG position is pretty damn good. Rubio had a night to forget with 7 points and 7 assists on 3/15 shooting while Josh Smith (who never played a game for us) had 12 points and 14 rebounds.

Memphis Grizzlies 37-19

Another win against a team in the three way trade as we easily brush past the Nuggets 107-90. John Wall had 20 points and 12 assists while Kenneth Faried fouled out in 19 minutes trying to guard Chris Drexler. Speaking of Drexler, he seems to like it in Denver, tonight having 22 points in only 27 minutes before also fouling out.

Memphis Grizzlies 38-19

We had a great February going 8-2 on the month and currently on a six game winning streak, but I expect that to be broken soon as we play Detroit and Utah in the next week. For now though we are up to fourth in the conference, already ten games behind Utah at 48-9, with New Orleans and Oklahoma City already above 40 wins for the season. Phoenix haven’t won ten games yet, sitting on the bottom of the conference at 9-49, ten games behind the second last Lakers.

In the East Detroit have broken away from the bunch to lead with a 44-11 record, a massive 7.5 games ahead of second placed Cleveland. Philadelphia have done one better (worse?) than Phoenix and are sitting at 8-51 on the season.

Memphis Top Points
Paul George – 20.1
Antoine Martin – 16.9
John Wall – 13.9

Memphis Top Assists
John Wall – 10.8
Paul George – 3.6
Mike Lloyd – 2.4

Memphis Top Rebounds
Ernest Jameson – 8.4
Kenneth Faried – 7.9
Paul George – 7.3

League Top Efficiency
Anthony Davis (NOH) – 28.7 (20.7 points, 2.1 assists, 11.0 rebounds, 2.3 steals, 4.2 blocks)
Kevin Durant (OKC) – 28.4 (31.1 points, 1.6 assists, 8.4 rebounds, 1.3 steals, 1.2 blocks)
Lebron James (UTA) – 26.2 (25.1 points, 6.3 assists, 5.7 rebounds, 1.8 steals, 0.6 blocks)

Rookie Top Efficiency
Marcello Locatelli (MIA) – 11.4 (10.0 points, 3.2 assists, 4.7 rebounds, 0.8 steals, 0.3 blocks)
Damon McMaster (HOU) – 10.1 (8.7 points, 0.5 assists, 4.3 rebounds, 0.3 steals, 0.3 blocks)
Jeff Cunningham (LAL) – 9.8 (9.2 points, 0.6 assists, 3.5 rebounds, 0.8 steals, 0.8 blocks)

Third Round of NBA Draft Prospects
1. (1) C Bryce Metcalf (Iowa), Sophomore, 6’11”, 279lbs
2. (2) C Emmett Emerson (Memphis), Sophomore, 6’11”, 268lbs
3. (NR) SF Sam Jennings (Houston), Sophomore, 6’6”, 230lbs
4. (5) SF Cedric Watson (Dayton), Freshman, 6’6”, 201lbs
5. (3) SG Ron Winston (Bradley), Senior, 6’8”, 217lbs

Thoughts – Again it’s the two centres at the top while Jennings roars back into the top three. I think the only reason why Winston has dropped this month is that he is a senior and thought of having less potential.

February Player of the Month – Brandon Jennings, Dallas Mavericks – 29.3 points, 5.2 rebounds, 9.5 assists, 2.5 steals and 0.6 blocks per game.

February Rookie of the Month – Earl Oliver, Portland Trailblazers – 14.9 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 0.1 steals and 0.5 blocks per game.

Our first game of the month is a blinder against the Pistons. Sure we were down all the game but we rattled off a 37-24 last quarter to win the game 101-94 to show the league we can play with the big boys. John Wall had a great all around game with 22 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists while Paul George had 21 points to help out. Carmelo Anthony led all five starters in double figures with 31 points and although Greg Monroe shot badly he still had 10 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists.

Memphis Grizzlies 39-19

I think we got too ahead of ourselves with that win over Detroit as we lose our next game against the middle of the pack Pacers 103-89. Darren Collison had 20 points and 11 assists while Kawhi Leonard took out some frustration against us with 22 points and 9 rebounds. Kenneth Faried was our best with 13 points and 15 rebounds.

Memphis Grizzlies 39-20

The next night we played the streaking Jazz and we got utterly humiliated 107-82 and that was flattering us. At the moment Utah has no-one on their level and are the overwhelming favourites to win it all. Lebron James had 36 points for the victors while our best was Mike Lloyd with 15 points in 13 minutes off the bench.

Memphis Grizzlies 39-21

Mark Lewis shot 2/12 from the foul line in another awful display of free throws combining with his 3/16 showing in our last battle. On the season he is shot 163/423 from the foul line for a percentage of 38.5% which is even worse than Shaq and Dwight. For someone who gets to the line seven times a game on average you would think he could do a bit better.

Alright we get back to a winning feeling with a 95-85 escape from the ever improving Raptors. Kenneth Faried had 20 points and 11 rebounds while John Wall chipped in with 22 points. Paul Orvis was the best for Toronto with 16 points and 5 rebounds.

Memphis Grizzlies 40-21

That’s two in a row as we wallop the Blazers 119-81. Even though Kenneth Faried got the player of the game award with 24 points and 8 rebounds it was Paul George for me with 16 points, 12 rebounds and 9 assists. LaMarcus Aldridge top scored for the Blazers with 17 points.

Memphis Grizzlies 41-21

This time Paul George was named player of the game in our 114-88 win over Sacramento with 24 points and 6 rebounds while John Wall and Kenneth Faried both doubled up. Thomas Robinson was the only King who showed up with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Memphis Grizzlies 42-21

In good news for one of my old players, Travis Ross was awarded the Player of the Week award for the past week, averaging 21.0 points, 7.3 rebounds and 3.7 blocks per game for the seven days. Good on him.

Our main focus on playing the Mavericks was the stop Brandon Jennings, because if we stop him then we stop Dallas. We were half right as we destroy them 127-90 with Paul George having 27 points on the game while Ricardo Marquardt popping up off the bench with 14 points and 6 rebounds in 17 minutes. Brandon Jennings still had 21 points, 11 assists and 7 rebounds but his teammates shot 34% from the field.

Memphis Grizzlies 43-21

We just can’t beat the Thunder it seems as they easily slip by us 102-89 as Kevin Durant nets 37 points, fairly easily. Kenneth Faried did his best with 17 points and 23 rebounds but I hate losing to the Thunder. Like Washington when I was with the Knicks I think Oklahoma City are my bogey team for the Grizzlies.

Memphis Grizzlies 43-22

It’s always nice to come home, and that home cooking propelled us to a 107-95 win over the Clippers. John Wall had 24 points while Mike Lloyd stepped up for the foul troubled Paul George with 16 points off the bench. Dion Waiters had 26 points and 7 assists for LA and I’m really impressed with his play now he has his own team.

Memphis Grizzlies 44-22

The next five games are against +.500 teams, and after this game they are all elite teams, so beating the 34-30 Wizards should be a priority, right? It should, but when a team shoots an amazing 31% from the field it rarely happens, as we went down 90-76. Bradley Beal had 27 points while Ricky Rubio was so close with 9 points, 9 rebounds and 9 assists. Kenneth Faried was our best with 23 points and 17 rebounds but I have been quite disappointed with Ernest Jameson. I know with our team full of scorers I wasn’t expecting his old averages but 12.9 points and 8.4 rebounds for an All NBA First Teamer just isn’t good enough.

Memphis Grizzlies 44-23

Ah ha! We get the best of the 50-14 Hornets with a 104-95 win in Memphis. Kenneth Faried had 18 points and 13 rebounds but finally Ernest Jameson does something with 21 points. Maybe he heard me complaining about him. Anthony Davis was held to only 15 points and 7 rebounds but he still had 5 blocks.

Memphis Grizzlies 45-23

Next is the 42-23 Spurs and we are no good away as they beat us handsomely 103-94. Dwight Howard had 36 points and 12 rebounds while Jeff Teague put up 12 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists. Paul George was our only decent player with 21 points and 8 rebounds.

Memphis Grizzlies 45-24

Back home for the 43-22 Cavs Paul George has his way for 31 points as we win 119-112. John Wall gave him the ball with 22 points and 14 assists as we shoot 53% from the field. Kyrie Irving had 20 points and 10 assists while Andrew Bynum shot badly for 22 points and 8 rebounds.

Memphis Grizzlies 46-24

Our biggest test of the season came two night later, hosting the 57-11 Jazz and you know what? We killed them 120-100. John Wall had 34 points and it was Paul George’s turn to give the ball to him as George had 13 points and 13 assists. Joe Abney was a spark off the bench with 10 points in 8 minutes. Lebron James had 26 points for the losers while Mark Lewis was again atrocious from the line, going 2/14 for 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Memphis Grizzlies 47-24

The last game in this hell streak was an away game against the 52-16 Hornets and predictably we won 103-91. What? We won? Yep, as we held New Orleans to 40% shooting. Paul George had 25 points and 8 rebounds while Ernest Jameson put up 16 points and 11 rebounds. Anthony Davis was the only Hornet who was on their game with 26 points and 11 rebounds but shot a terrible 11/23 from the field.

Memphis Grizzlies 48-24

Going into Portland I thought we would have a let down but no such thing as we beat the Blazers 104-88. John Wall was by far the best with 23 points, 9 assists and 6 rebounds while Paul George had 18 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists. LaMarcus Aldridge was again the best for the Blazers like last time with 19 points and 8 rebounds.

Memphis Grizzlies 49-24

We finish the month by getting our 50th win with a 107-76 shellacking of the woeful Suns. Kenneth Faried had 34 points and 6 blocks while Paul George had a great all around game with 21 points, 12 rebounds and 7 assists. Jim Turner had 16 points and 8 rebounds for Phoenix while Alexander Verhaeren had a night to forget with only 3 points (1/11 FG) and five turnovers.

Memphis Grizzlies 50-24

I think we did fantastic with that tough stretch, currently having a five game winning streak. We are still fourth in the conference as Utah, New Orleans and Oklahoma City are just too good at the moment. Utah are leading the way with a 60-13 record. What worries me is that we are 34-4 at home but only 16-20 away, meaning we have to get home court advantage for at least the first round if we want to do some damage. Phoenix are last with a 11-63 record.

In the East Detroit are a massive nine games in front of second placed Cleveland with a 56-16 record. If we were in the East we would be second, just saying. Miami are a half game in front of Philadelphia at 13-60 for the conference’s worst record.

Memphis Top Points
Paul George – 19.6
Antoine Martin – 16.1
Kenneth Faried – 15.0

Memphis Top Assists
John Wall – 10.0
Paul George – 3.9
Mike Lloyd – 2.5

Memphis Top Rebounds
Kenneth Faried – 9.2
Ernest Jameson – 8.2
Paul George – 7.2

League Top Efficiency
Kevin Durant (OKC) – 27.9 (30.5 points, 1.5 assists, 8.3 rebounds, 1.2 steals, 1.2 blocks)
Anthony Davis (NOH) – 26.8 (19.4 points, 2.0 assists, 10.3 rebounds, 2.2 steals, 3.9 blocks)
Lebron James (UTA) – 26.0 (25.0 points, 6.3 assists, 5.5 rebounds, 1.8 steals, 0.5 blocks)

Rookie Top Efficiency
Marcello Locatelli (MIA) – 10.9 (9.8 points, 3.2 assists, 4.7 rebounds, 0.8 steals, 0.4 blocks)
Jeff Cunningham (LAL) – 10.4 (9.8 points, 0.6 assists, 3.6 rebounds, 0.9 steals, 0.8 blocks)
Damon McMaster (HOU) – 10.4 (9.0 points, 0.6 assists, 4.7 rebounds, 0.3 steals, 0.3 blocks)

Last Round of NBA Draft Prospects (previous rank in brackets)
1. (1) C Bryce Metcalf (Iowa), Sophomore, 6’11”, 279lbs
2. (2) C Emmett Emerson (Memphis), Sophomore, 6’11”, 268lbs
3. (3) SF Sam Jennings (Houston), Sophomore, 6’6”, 230lbs
4. (4) SF Cedric Watson (Dayton), Freshman, 6’6”, 201lbs
5. (5) SF Ron Winston (Bradley), Senior, 6’8”, 217lbs

Thoughts – It looks like this is the top five from now on as they have not moved in quite a while. Metcalf is becoming the player everyone thought he could be and has broken away from Emerson.

March Player of the Month – Kevin Durant, Oklahoma City Thunder – 28.3 points, 8.0 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 0.9 steals and 0.9 blocks per game.

March Rookie of the Month – Jeff Cunningham, Los Angeles Lakers – 12.9 points, 3.8 rebounds, 0.8 assists, 1.4 steals and 0.7 blocks per game.

We have eight games to go in the season and the Thunder are three games in front of us for the third seed. We need to keep winning because third is much better than fourth.

Good start to the month with a 103-97 away win over Sacramento. John Wall led the way with 23 points and 7 assists while Nikola Vucevic stepped up for the foul hampered Ernest Jameson with 11 points and 6 rebounds off the bench. Marcus Thornton led the way for the Kings with 23 points but they really need a proper PG with 6’5” SG Joe Holmes starting there at the moment and turned the ball over seven times in this game.

Memphis Grizzlies 51-24

Two from two as we knock out the Clippers 94-83 after a 27-12 third quarter. Paul George led six Grizz players in double figures with 19 points, 11 rebounds and 7 assists while Joe Abney had 10 points in only 7 minutes. Dion Waiters was the best for the Clips with 14 points which really says a lot about their game tonight.

Memphis Grizzlies 52-24

John Wall sprained his toe late in our 102-97 win over Denver but not before racking up 26 points and 12 assists. Kenneth Faried also doubled up with 12 points and 11 rebounds going against his trade partner Chris Drexler who had 21 points and 8 rebounds. Drexler seems to like it in Denver more than Washington, sure he will probably get himself kicked out like he did with the Wizards but probably not as quickly.

Memphis Grizzlies 53-24

In the Jazz’s 129-119 overtime win over Oklahoma City Derrick Favors had a night to remember with 33 points, 26 rebounds and 6 blocks. He did take 30 shots on the night though.

Great. In our 98-90 win over Charlotte Kenneth Faried bruised his thigh and will be less than 100%, hell less than 80% for about three weeks. Paul George took 24 shots for 20 points while Klay Thompson had 21 points on 18 shots for the Cats.

Memphis Grizzlies 54-24

Ricardo Marquardt is back starting at PF for the injured Kenneth Faried.

We go and visit Travis Ross in Lala Land and we take out the win 107-86. Antoine Martin steps up with 26 points to go with Paul George’s 24 points. Travis Ross is starting at PF in combination with Jeff Cunningham and had 16 points and 2 rebounds.

Memphis Grizzlies 55-24

It was bound to happen as we run out of legs and get destroyed by Golden State 121-99. Steph Curry had 24 points and 16 assists while Marquis Brown top scored with 30 points. Paul George and Antoine Martin were our best again with 32 points and 29 points respectively.

Memphis Grizzlies 55-25

With two games to go we are one game behind the Thunder so we need to win the next two. Unfortunately for us we lose to San Antonio 99-96 as they beat us 25-19 in the final term. Dwight Howard had 19 points and 9 rebounds while Paul George had 29 points on 14 shots. So much for third place.

Memphis Grizzlies 55-26

For our last game our starting five is –

PG – Mike Lloyd
SG – Joe Abney
SF – Brandon Rush
PF – Ricardo Marquardt
C – Nikola Vucevic

Obviously we got smashed 103-81 to Houston as James Harden nabs a triple double with 25 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds and Ryan Robinson scored 24 points in the win. Joe Abney had 19 points on 20 shots while Mike Lloyd had a night to forget with 3/14 shooting for 6 points, 7 rebounds and 8 assists.

Memphis Grizzlies 55-27

Our final month was really good, but not good enough to sneak into third. The main thing that should be said is that the West is unbelievably tough, brutal even. Six teams had more than 50 wins and two teams over 60.

Western Conference Final Standings
1. Utah Jazz – 68-14 (.829)
2. New Orleans Hornets – 60-22 (.732)
3. Oklahoma City Thunder – 58-24 (.707)
4. Memphis Grizzlies – 55-27 (.671)
5. San Antonio Spurs – 53-29 (.646)
6. Minnesota Timberwolves – 52-30 (.634)
7. Sacramento Kings – 45-37 (.549)
8. Golden State Warriors – 39-43 (.476)
Last – Phoenix Suns – 13-69 (.159)

Eastern Conference Final Standings
1. Detroit Pistons – 60-22 (.732)
2. Cleveland Cavaliers – 52-30 (.634)
3. New York Knicks – 51-31 (.622)
4. Charlotte Bobcats – 48-34 (.585)
5. Toronto Raptors – 47-35 (.573)
6. Milwaukee Bucks – 46-36 (.561)
7. Washington Wizards – 44-38 (.537)
8. Orlando Magic – 42-40 (.512)
Last – Philadelphia 76ers – 17-65 (.207)

If the sixth placed Spurs were in the East they would be second in the conference, that is how much better the West is than the East.

Rookie Top Rebounds

This rookie class really hasn’t set the world on fire so hopefully the next one can actually have a player who scores in the double digits for a whole season.
