Game #25

Postby randy » Mon Mar 11, 2013 11:28 pm

2/7/94: Lamar (13-11, 6-5) @ #17 Sam Houston St (19-5, 9-2)

Pre-game Notes
1. Our previous meeting with Lamar ended with a big loss for us, 66-87. Their SG, the conference's 2nd leading scorer, burned us with 22 pts. But the big factor in that game was their bench, scoring 43 huge pts.
2. Lamar leads the conference in scoring, but also gives up a lot of pts (rank last in opposition scoring). Defense will decide this game.
Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Freedom: Auto / 70%
2. Defense Sets / Intensity: man / 8 (double on their star SG)
3. Press Sets / Frequency: HC Trap / 9
4. Off/Def Reb Intensity: 9/10
5. Off Pace / Focus: 3 / Heavy Inside
Tip off (1st Half)

15:55, Up 12-4
We came out the hungrier team. Rebounds are already at +6 (8-2)

10:54, Up 22-10
Our hustle and pressure defense continues to make life difficult for Lamar; they are currently shooting 27% FG, and their start SG has yet to attempt a single shot

7:46 Up 28-18
Their offense begins to pick up

3:55 Up 35-24
Carr,Majerus, and Cook all with 2 fouls

Halftime, Up 41-30
I ended up playing 4 guards to end the half, due to foul trouble of my bigs. Each team was called for 11 fouls each. Coulibaly leads us with 14 pts

Start of 2nd Half

19:35, Up 43-30
The trigger-happy refs called 2 quick fouls on Johnson. He now has 4

15:41, Up 49-34
It's Lamar's turn now to be called for a succession (4) of fouls. Nice one refs :-)

11:56, Up 54-39
It was down to 11 earlier, but we answered back immediately

6:01, Up 67-42
They went on a drought, while we continue to play our butts out

Final score: Lamar - 51, #17 Sam Houston St - 79
They beat us by 21 the last time, we beat them by 28 this time. Maybe another meeting in the conference tournament will settle the score?

REB: +14 (we had 18 off rebs)

Fast Break: +22
Other Notes
1. I love the effort and hustle today. 18 off rebs lead to 22 2nd chance pts. Our half court trap produced 15 stls, which contributed to 28 fast break pts. We wanted to send a *statement* to Lamar; now it's even
2. Their star SG ended with 9 pts, all from 3. He only attempted 6 shots, so the constant hounding and double team paid off
3. Solid game for Johnson on his debut at the starting lineup. 10 pts, 3 rebs, 4 asts, 2 sts, 2 blks, and only 1 turn over in 24 mins of play. He wuold have played more if not for foul trouble
3. ISR = 2.1

Game #26

Postby randy » Tue Mar 12, 2013 4:01 am

Dana Cook has been named as a semifinalist (#5) for the Norton award

We remain at rank #17. We are #29 on the Bubble List; good enough for an 8-seed?

2/7/94: #17 Sam Houston St (20-5, 10-2) @ Texas St. (14-11, 6-6)

Pre-game Notes
1. The first meeting at our place resulted in a victory for us, 61-45. We held them to 36% FG and 19 rebs.
2. With the regular season title all wrapped up, I'll try to experiment some tactics. We'll double-team everyone on their side (except the PG). During the last game against Lamar, we also found success in using the HC trap very often, so we'll continue to employ that as well.
Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Freedom: Auto / 70%
2. Defense Sets / Intensity: man / 8 (double on everyone, except PG; everybody should be active in defense)
3. Press Sets / Frequency: HC Trap / 9
4. Off/Def Reb Intensity: 9/10
5. Off Pace / Focus: 2 / Heavy Inside (we'll try to see if using an even slower pace would be effective)
Tip off (1st Half)

13:45, Up 15-13
Both teams shooting more than 70% FG.

7:29, Up 28-20
Our constant double teams has already resulted in 7 turn overs for TEXST. However, when they do put up a shot, it almost always goes in.

Halftime, Up 40-29
The lead was 14, but they a buzzer-beating 3. We continue to hound them with our double teaming, forcing 11 tos. We were somehow able to "cool' them off a bit, but they are still shooting 55% FG. Coulibaly leads us with 10 pts; Carr and Cook have 8 each.

Start of 2nd Half

15:58, Up 49-30
We hit a couple of 3s. TEXST has yet to convert a FG.

12:29 Up 53-38
Fouls are stacking up against us, 8-2 in this half.

3:11 Up 69-49
This is over. Clear the bench

Final score: #17 Sam Houston St - 75, Texas St. - 53

Box Score
Cook 20, 7, 2 (*)
Carr 15, 5, 2
Coulibaly 14, 2, 0
Majerus 7, 4, 0
Johnson 6, 2, 4
Granville 4, 1, 3
Smith 4, 1, 0
Belton 2, 0, 0
Hatter 2, 0, 0
Griffin 1, 4, 2
Jackson, 0, 1, 1
Thomas 0, 0, 0
Team Stats Comparisons
FG: 59-39%
REB: +5
TO: -4
Paint: +20
2nd Chance : Even
Fast Break: +4 (8-4; it was a slow, deliberate game)
Other Notes
1. TEXST was not able to sustain their hot shooting during the 2nd half.
2. The "double team everyone" strategy also resulted in few inside pts by the opposition (only 12)
3. Did the slower pace (2) contributed to us shooting efficiently at 59%? Could be. I'll give this a try again during our last regular season game.
3. ISR = 1.1
Interested in double team everyone, Coach. Did you actually check that in the boxes for everyone except the PG?

I've done that before as well (double teaming as many as 4), but I've never had much success with it.

I may play with it. particularly against teams who do not have a strong PG.

Yes, I checked on all boxes (except the PG), and go man-to-man all the way. It was effective at the first half, producing tons of turnovers on their side (either throwing the ball away or traveling violation). Not much turn overs generated in the 2nd half, but limited the opposing team to low FG%

Game #27

Postby randy » Wed Mar 13, 2013 7:15 am

Last regular season game, which is also our last home game. We only have one senior in the squad, PG Brian Johnson. Despite being a walkon, he is playing a significant role this season being our only reliable true PG.

2/17/94: Central Arkansas (14-23, 6-7) @ #17 Sam Houston St (21-5, 11-2)

Pre-game Notes
1. It was a blowout (something that we didn't expected) during our first meeting at their place, with us winning 75-46 and limiting them to 29% FG.
2. UCA remains one of the top offensive team in the conference (rank: #3) but they give a lot of points also (rank: last). They continue to shoot a lot of 3s (23 3PAs per game)
Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Freedom: Auto / 70%
2. Defense Sets / Intensity: man / 8 (double on everyone, except PG)
3. Press Sets / Frequency: HC Trap / 9
4. Off/Def Reb Intensity: 9/10
5. Off Pace / Focus: 3 / Heavy Inside
[B]Tip off (1st Half)

15:30, Up 11-2
UCA is 0-5 FG with 2 turn overs. Our defense is doing well, although we need to cut down on thier offensive rebs; UCA already has 4.

11:54, Up 20-9
Cook, Majerus, and Johnson all have 2 fouls each.

7:43, Up 29-15
My entire starting lineup is in the bench (resting / foul trouble).

6:56, Up 29-21
All of a sudden, their SF hits 2 consecutive 3s. We called a time out to stop momentum

2:46, Up 40-23
We go on an 11-2 run. Carr is feeling it today, with 17 pts

Halftime, Up 42-29
Not satisfied with the way we ended the half. Carr also picked up his 2nd foul, making it 4 starters who have 2 fouls each.
UCA continue to shoot poorly from the field, at 37% FG.
Despite a def reb intensity of 10, UCA grabbed 8 offensive rebs
Cook and Majerus has played for only a combined 13 mins, due to foul trouble

Start of 2nd Half

18:48, Up 48-29
Started out the half strong, going 6-0. UCA is forced to take a time out

15:25, Up 52-37
Majerus picked up his 4th foul.

11:35, Up 57-37
UCA starting to throw the ball away again, now with a total of 13 turn overs

6:52, Up 65-44
I guess Carr woke up on the right side of the bed earlier today; he already has 31 pts!

3:51, Up 71-49
I pulled out Johnson, our only senior this season. The crowd cheered and acknowledged his contributions to the school.

One by one, I started substituting our starters. Starting with Cook. Chants of MVP can be heard from the crowd. And then Carr; big game for him tonight.

Final score: Central Arkansas - 57, #17 Sam Houston St - 76

Box Score
Carr 36, 6, 0 (*)
Cook 11, 4, 0
Griffin 8, 2, 2
Johnson 6, 1, 4
Smith 5, 2, 1
Majerus 4, 2, 1
Granville 4, 2, 2, 5 tos!
Jackson 2, 0, 0
Coulibaly 0, 6, 6
Belton 0, 4, 2
Thomas 0, 0, 0
Team Stats Comparisons
FG: 53-36%
REB: -1
TO: -9 (9-18; if not for Granville's 5 tos, this would have been an excellent game for us in terms of taking care of the ball)
Paint: +16
2nd Chance : +5
Fast Break: +9
Other Notes
1. I am beginning to think that our optimal offensive strategy is to go slow pace; either 2 or 3, but I'll most likely go to 3. We shot well (at least 50% FG) during the past 2 games.

2. On defense, the relentless double team has strategy had mixed results. We are forcing more turn over and forcing opponents to shoot poorly from the field, but our rebounding differential advantage is somewhat affected. Maybe because my players are sometime out of position to grab a defensive rebound, because they double team everyone in sight.
Final Standings
Sam Houston St, 12-2 (*)
Nicholls St, 8-6
Texas A&M CC, 8-6
Lamar, 7-7
Texas Arlington, 7-7
Central Arkansas, 6-8
Texas St, 6-8
Texas San Antonio, 2-12
