Thanks for the kind words, I'm still enjoying writing this. I've been a little busy so far but I do like doing an update every day/second day.

January Player of the Month – Kevin Durant, Oklahoma City Thunder – 31.6 points, 8.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.5 blocks per game.

January Rookie of the Month – Brooks Badu, Philadelphia 76ers – 13.5 points, 2.7 rebounds, 7.7 assists, 1.5 steals and 0.2 blocks per game.

I badmouthed Badu before the draft and he is making me eat a whole bucket full of crow. At this point in time he would be the favourite for Rookie of the Year which I didn’t pick at all.

Our first game of February is a massive 111-73 demolishing of the DeMarcus Cousins-less Kings. Kenneth Faried had 22 points and 10 rebounds while John Wall and Dwight Howard doubled up as well. Thomas Robinson was the best for Sacramento with 19 points but they shot 38% from the field and a 31-4 second quarter didn’t do them any favours.

Memphis Grizzlies 34-9

Kenneth Faried is on fire at the moment, showcased brilliantly by his 34 points and 19 rebounds in our victory over Dallas 111-78. The Mavs shot 29% from the field as Brandon Jennings still isn’t healthy enough to play and without him they are a bottom five team in the league.

Memphis Grizzlies 35-9

The 33-13 Timberwolves were our next opponent but the result was the same, a 100-92 outclassing. John Wall was close to a triple double with 23 points, 10 assists and 8 rebounds while Antoine Martin put up 18 points and 8 turnovers in 22 minutes off the bench. Kevin Love and Damian Lillard led the way for Minnesota with 19 points but again they shot a poor 41% from the field. Our defence lately has been suffocating.

Memphis Grizzlies 36-9

**TRADE**

LA Lakers trade:
PG Grevis Vasquez
2019 2nd round pick

San Antonio trade:
C Ricardo Marquardt

Winner – San Antonio. The Spurs have a Chris Paul/Jeff Teague backcourt so they needed a bench PG and Vasquez fills that need. The Lakers now have five centres that will need minutes so I don’t understand this trade by LA.

Again it was Kenneth Faried with a huge game as we stomp on the Pacers 104-85. The Manimal had 36 points, 15 rebounds and 5 blocks in the win while John Wall took 29 shots to get 23 points and 9 assists. Paul Millsap had 17 points and 11 rebounds but it’s nice to see Alexander Verhaeren getting good minutes as he is starting at SG now.

Memphis Grizzlies 37-9

Detroit are well and truly the best team in the league and they stamped that claim with a 141-71 win over Miami. Their largest lead was a mind melting 75 points as they shot 61% from the field and 73% from three. Greg Monroe led the way with 26 points and 12 rebounds in only 28 minutes as every Piston player had at least 14 minutes playing time.

That’s ten wins in a row with a 106-90 come from behind victory over Boston as we got down by 16 points in the second quarter. Luckily for us we woke up and outscored them 68-42 in the second half. Kenneth Faried had 24 points and 14 rebounds but it was Antoine Martin who sparked the run with 23 points and 8 rebounds off the bench. Ben Chambers had 13 points and 12 rebounds for the losers but I can never take his output seriously as he is one of the worst defenders in the league.

Memphis Grizzlies 38-9

The Blazers didn’t stand a chance as we rip into them all game, with all over our players getting at least 11 minutes of court time in our 131-86 humiliation of Portland. Kenneth Faried had 17 points and 11 rebounds while Joe Abney put up 13 points off the bench. Unfortunately Paul George still has back spasms and will sit for nearly two weeks. LaMarcus Aldridge was the only light for Portland with 23 points and 9 rebounds.

Memphis Grizzlies 39-9

Antoine Martin had a terrible night starting at SF with 4/16 shooting and 5 turnovers as our winning streak was broken by San Antonio 91-87. Josh Smith didn’t shoot well (6/19) but did everything else with 13 points, 15 rebounds and 9 assists. Kenneth Faried was again our best with 18 points and 9 rebounds as Joe Abney starting at SG with 6 points.

Memphis Grizzlies 39-10

The Nets didn’t stand a chance as we always come out strong after a loss as we smoosh them 113-83. Dwight Howard put up 30 points and 9 rebounds while Antoine Martin had 20 points and 8 rebounds. Blake Griffin had 21 points for the losers but Derrick Williams went 1/10 which kinda cancelled that out.

Memphis Grizzlies 40-10

The All Star festivities roll around and starting off with the Slam Dunk Contest. San Antonio’s Jamal Howell was the best dunker on the night as he won the preliminaries and then beat Brooklyn’s Andrew Morgan quite easily in the final. In the Long Distance Shootout Klay Thompson won the preliminaries as well and then went on to smash Orlando’s Tobias Harris and Detroit’s John Johnson in the final.

In one of the most lopsided Rookie games I have ever seen, the Sophomores shot 27/55 from the three point line as they won 152-115. Earl Oliver won the Player of the Game with 34 points while Marcello Locatelli helped him out with 28 points and 11 assists as six second year players were in double figures. Brooks Badu was the best for the rookies with 16 points and 13 assists and even though they shot 51% from the field they just couldn’t stay with the crazy good outside shooting of the other team.

Kyrie Irving had a game to remember in the East’s 132-107 win as the East starting PG had 28 points and 10 assists. Paul Orvis had 23 points and Bradley Beal put up 22 points for the winners while James Harden led the way for the West with 22 points and 8 assists. We had two players in the contest with Dwight Howard starting at centre but Kenneth Faried didn’t get any playing time as he was nursing a slight leg injury. For some reason Ernest Jameson got a position on the West team even though he is sucking really badly.

Eastern Conference All Star Starters
Kyrie Irving, Cleveland Cavaliers
Bradley Beal, Washington Wizards
Paul Orvis, Toronto Raptors
Greg Monroe, Detroit Pistons
Joakim Noah, Chicago Bulls

Team with most players – Toronto, Detroit, Washington and Cleveland with two each.

Western Conference All Star Starters
Russell Westbrook, Oklahoma City Thunder
James Harden, Houston Rockets
Kevin Durant, Oklahoma City Thunder
Kevin Love, Minnesota Timberwolves
Dwight Howard, Memphis Grizzlies

Team with most players – New Orleans with three players.

The Nuggets put up a good fight as Chris Drexler was pretty angry that he didn’t get an All Star nod with 24 points and 15 rebounds but we kept Denver to 29% from the field as we won 81-70. Kenneth Faried had 20 points, 14 rebounds and 8 blocks while Dwight Howard helped him out with 15 points and 16 rebounds as we just shut the Nuggets down with our defence.

Memphis Grizzlies 41-10

With only a few days left until the trade deadline the trades have started to come in with a massive, massive trade happening today.

Oklahoma City trade:
SG Louis Williams
SG Darrell Maxwell
SG Dwyane Wade

Indiana trade:
PF Donatas Motiejunas
2019 2nd round pick

Winner – Oklahoma City. The Pacers now have six SGs on the team and only one PF so their balance is again out of whack. Motiejunas now becomes the Thunder’s best big man off the bench and makes them a lot more dangerous going into the playoff hunt.

Minnesota trade:
PG Goran Dragic
SG Arron Afflalo

Golden State trade:
C Marc Gasol
2019 2nd round pick

Winner – Minnesota. Even though Gasol is now starting to slow down he makes the T’Wolves dangerous as he slots into the starting C position and moves Nikola Pekovic to the bench. Dragic is a good player but the Warriors now have too many PGs on their roster and only a skeleton staff at C.

Washington trade:
SG James Smith
SF Trevor Ariza

Chicago trade:
C Joakim Noah
2019 2nd round pick

Winner – Washington. There were only two players on the Bulls’ squad that scored in double figures, now there is only one – Derrick Rose. This is a momentously bad trade by the Bulls and the Wizards were probably laughing for days after this. Not only is Noah averaging 21.4 points and 10.2 rebounds per game he was the starting C for the East All Star team. Biggest. Steal. Ever.

The Bobcats had our measure all game in their 94-81 win in Memphis as we shoot 32% from the field. Bill Mallet had 29 points off the bench for Charlotte as our best was Dwight Howard who had 22 points and 17 rebounds but went 4/15 from the floor.

Memphis Grizzlies 41-11

More deadline trades.

Minnesota trade:
C Nikola Pekovic
2019 2nd round pick

Dallas trade:
SF Evan Turner

Winner – Dallas. Pekovic is a better player and will work well with the woeful Mavericks. They won’t get much better with Brandon Jennings still out for the season but it’s a good start.

Washington trade:
SG Steve Anderson
SG Corey Brewer

LA Lakers trade:
SF Dylan Peterson

Winner – Washington. Brewer was released so it’s an Anderson for Peterson trade and the Wizards get the win here.

Dwight Howard was massive against Travis Ross with 28 points and 14 rebounds as we took care of the Lakers 114-89 in LA. John Wall had 21 assists, mostly to Howard, Faried and George as we were in cruise control for most of the game. Joe Holmes had 30 points for the losers but there wasn’t anything else.

Memphis Grizzlies 42-11

Going into Utah against the 44-11 Jazz is always going to be disappointing and it was even worse when they got out to a 37-17 first quarter and a 24 point lead in the second. Luckily for us we had John Wall as we storm back to win 99-94 and burst their bubble. Wall had 25 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists as all of our starters had 12 points or more. Lebron James had a terrible game with 15 points on 4/17 from the field. Derrick Favors was great with 26 points and 13 rebounds but the Jazz shot 40% from the field against our 51%.

Memphis Grizzlies 43-11

The Clippers may be struggling this season but it didn’t stop them from sweeping us aside 103-89 behind a 25-9 third quarter. Christopher de Castro was everywhere with 25 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists while Dion Waiters had 14 points and 5 assists. Kenneth Faried was our best with 25 points and 8 rebounds but we shot 38% and turned the ball over 20 times which just isn’t good enough.

Memphis Grizzlies 43-12

The 46-9 Pistons are now the 47-9 Pistons as we never lead in the game as they beat us 117-110. John Johnson was amazing with 39 points on only 20 shots with Jrue Holiday showing his worth with 25 points and 9 assists. Andre Drummond fouled out in only 13 minutes as Dwight Howard shoots 19/25 from the foul line on his way to 31 points and 10 rebounds but Detroit shot 11/19 from three which knocked us down.

Memphis Grizzlies 43-13

After dropping those two games we are now two games behind Utah for first place in the conference as they are 46-12, with Minnesota not far behind us at 42-15. Portland have taken over from Phoenix as the worst team in the West with a 15-42 record. This conference is so good there are five teams that have a winning percentage of .700 or better, with sixth placed San Antonio not far behind at .632.

In the East Detroit have pretty much got this sewn up with a 47-9 record, a massive 8.5 games ahead of second placed Washington at 39-18. Miami have fallen way behind at 9-47, seven games behind second last placed Orlando.

Third Round of NBA Draft Prospects (previous rank in brackets) –
1. (1) SF Raul Lopez (Virginia), Freshman, 6’10”, 221lbs
2. (2) C Eryk Charnowski (Poland), 17 years old, 6’10”, 254lbs
3. (3) PF Chad Dickenman (Cincinnati), Sophomore, 6’9”, 236lbs
4. (4) C Ronnie Howard (Temple), Freshman, 7’1”, 294lbs
5. (5) SF Ryan Garris (UT-Chattanooga), Junior, 6’9”, 217lbs

Thoughts – Still the Raul Lopez draft but the stocks of PGs and SGs are pretty darn low. Probably the best PG is Matt Brown from Southern Illinois while his teammate Ross Lampley is the best SG so far. It will be interesting to see who gets drafted first.

February Player of the Month – Kevin Durant, Oklahoma City Thunder – 32.8 points, 7.2 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 1.0 steal and 1.1 blocks per game.

February Rookie of the Month – Brooks Badu, Philadelphia 76ers – 18.1 points, 3.1 rebounds, 6.9 assists, 0.6 steals and 0.3 blocks per game.

Our first game for March was a snoozer as we brushed past the Bulls 90-64 because without Joakim Noah they don’t really have anything. Dwight Howard took full advantage with 25 points, 18 rebounds and 7 blocks while fouling out Tyler Zeller in only 11 minutes. Derrick Rose had 18 points for Chicago but honestly they are in tatters at the moment.

Memphis Grizzlies 44-13

Two away games come up and we take the first in Canada by running over the top of the Raptors 127-97. Dwight Howard was again the best with 28 points and 10 rebounds but it was Kenneth Faried who impressed me with 21 points and 12 rebounds on only 6/8 shooting. Omer Asik took top honours for Toronto with 14 points and 11 rebounds but Paul Orvis and Jake Chase combined for only 31 points.

Memphis Grizzlies 45-13

Dwight Howard was a man among boys in our 106-91 win over Philadelphia with 27 points, 12 rebounds and 6 blocks, going 11/14 from the field and actually hitting most of his free throws. Brooks Badu wanted to put on a show for me as he still hasn’t got over me slagging him off before the draft with 23 points but didn’t get any other help.

Memphis Grizzlies 46-13

The Hornets come to town and I feel like we have their measure as we shut the team down 128-106. Even though Eric Gordon torched us for 39 points Anthony Davis only had 15 points and zero blocks while Dwight Howard had 31 points and Kenneth Faried and Paul George combined for 44 points. If we keep up this output the playoffs are looking good.

Memphis Grizzlies 47-13

Dwight Howard shot 11/24 from the foul line and still ended up with 29 points in our 116-96 smashing of Denver. I swear if he was a better foul shooter he would be talked about in the best centres of all time but oh well. John Wall and Mike Lloyd combined for 32 points and 21 assists. If the Nuggets didn’t have Chris Drexler they would be in trouble, shown by his 25 points and 14 rebounds in the loss.

Memphis Grizzlies 48-13

It was Antoine Martin’s turn to light the nets on fire, this time with 22 points in 27 minutes in our 104-71 win over Washington. Of course Dwight Howard got his 20 points, 10 rebounds and 5 blocks but this game was very clinical as we wanted to show the good Wizards team that we are the real deal. Joakim Noah had 10 points and 7 rebounds for his new team.

Memphis Grizzlies 49-13

Game two of our four game road trip and it’s the same result, a 103-96 win over Atlanta. Who else but Dwight Howard was Player of the Game with 25 points and 13 rebounds while John Wall had eight turnovers. The Hawks had an astounding stat with Kendall Marshall having 10 assists in only 15 minutes off the bench. Sure his defence isn’t great but he is one of the best pure passing point guards in the league and I would love to see him start, instead of backing up Deron Williams.

Memphis Grizzlies 50-13

Yay, 50 wins!

What did I say about the Bulls being in shambles? Even though John Wall had 15 points and 10 assists and Dwight Howard and Kenneth Faried combined for 49 points and 29 rebounds we went down 91-83 to Chicago. Joakim Noah’s replacement Tyler Zeller took it up to Howard with 19 points and 11 rebounds while Derrick Rose had 19 points but only 1 assist.

Memphis Grizzlies 50-14

After the game Ekpe Udoh came into my office and started to complain about his playing time. I stop him mid sentence and flat out tell him that we are on to something special here and he is a major component of that. He just needs to wait until the playoffs and I’m sure he will get more court time because of fatigue. I also tell him that there really isn’t anything I can do because the trade deadline has passed so I can’t trade him and there is no way I’m just cutting him because that is wasting money. He is still a little angry but he can see where I’m coming from so that’s a win in my book.

Our last game on this road trip was in Indiana and we took them to the sword after the loss with a 90-78 win. Kenneth Faried was our best with 21 points, 9 rebounds and 5 blocks but John Wall had a night to forget with 12 points on 5/21 shooting. Darren Collison is starting at SG, giving the Pacers the smallest backcourt ever (probably, Collison is 6’1” and Isaiah Thomas is 5’10”) but that didn’t stop Collison from scoring 20 points in the loss.

Memphis Grizzlies 51-14

We shot 41% to Houston’s 43% from the field yet we still beat the Rockets 101-92 as Paul George had 16 points to lead the team. It was a really weird game because we were shooting a lot of shots and missing a lot but somehow we made enough buckets to get the win.

Memphis Grizzlies 52-14

Even though I didn’t like him here in Memphis it’s good to see Wesley Fields become a great player in Portland. Tonight he had 12 points, 8 assists and 6 rebounds but it wasn’t enough as we beat them easily 108-85 behind Kenneth Faried’s 24 points, 14 rebounds, 5 steals and 5 blocks.

Memphis Grizzlies 53-14

I like beating the Spurs, I’m not sure why but it is always good when we do. The score was 109-91 in our favour as all five of our starters had 12 points or more, led by Dwight Howard’s 18 points and 11 rebounds. Josh Smith was the best for San Antonio with 25 points and 13 rebounds but Ernest Jameson only had 6 points and 8 rebounds. So disappointing.

Memphis Grizzlies 54-14

Phew, we got out of jail against the Kings as we squeak past them 105-100 as DeMarcus Cousins and Marcus Thornton combined for 52 points, more than half their total score. Andrew Bogut was great as Dwight Howard’s replacement with 12 points and 7 rebounds while Joe Abney had 11 points in 9 minutes to keep us in the win column.

Memphis Grizzlies 55-14

The 49-22 Thunder visit us in Memphis and we again squeak out a win, this time winning the fourth quarter 24-19 to win the game 100-97. Kenneth Faried had 24 points and 11 rebounds but all eyes were on OKC’s big two in Kevin Durant (38 points) and Russell Westbrook (25 points, 14 assists and 9 rebounds). Lucky for us we play a quicker pace because we shot a worse percentage than the Thunder.

Memphis Grizzlies 56-14

Our last game for the month is a disappointing one, because we lost to my old team the New York Knicks 126-122 in overtime. Altron Johnson had 33 points in 32 minutes off the bench while Steph Curry put up 24 points and 13 assists in the win. Dwight Howard and Kenneth Faried combined for 51 points and 29 rebounds but Paul George fouled out in only 24 minutes trying to keep up with Rudy Gay.

Memphis Grizzlies 56-15

Even though we lost that last game we are still first in the conference, only a half game ahead of Utah (56-16) and one game in front of Minnesota (56-17). Oklahoma City are also in the 50 win club at 50-24. Portland are 38 games behind us at 19-54, one game behind Phoenix and the LA Lakers.

In the East Detroit have opened up an amazing 11.5 game lead in front of second placed Washington with a 61-11 record with Washington at 50-23. They are the only two East teams with 50 wins. Miami are 48.5 games behind Detroit at 13-60 and have the last placed title wrapped up it seems.

Memphis Top Points
Dwight Howard – 19.8
Kenneth Faried – 19.1

Memphis Top Assists
John Wall – 8.7
Paul George – 3.6

Last Round of NBA Draft Prospects (previous rank in brackets) –
1. (1) SF Raul Lopez (Virginia), Freshman, 6’10”, 221lbs
2. (3) PF Chad Dickenman (Cincinnati), Sophomore, 6’9”, 236lbs

4. (5) SF Ryan Garris (UT-Chattanooga), Junior, 6’9”, 217lbs
5. (2) C Eryk Charnowski (Poland), 17 years old, 6’10”, 254lbs

Thoughts – Somehow Lopez has increased his averages to 36 points and 14 rebounds a game which is simply astonishing while Eryk has dropped a little because of his rawness. I still like Garris as the #2 pick put Dickenman is starting to shut me up.

March Player of the Month – Kevin Durant, Oklahoma City Thunder – 33.6 points, 6.9 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.2 blocks per game.

March Rookie of the Month – Brooks Badu, Philadelphia 76ers – 16.6 points, 4.2 rebounds, 8.7 assists, 1.3 steals and 0.2 blocks per game.

We have eleven games to go with seven of those away from home so we need to win as many games as we can to keep the #1 playoff position.

We started the month in great form with a 107-74 smattering of Dallas behind Kenneth Faried’s 33 points and 12 rebounds on 14/16 shooting which is just phenomenal. Dwight Howard had his back with 15 points and 17 rebounds and fouling out Nikola Pekovic in only 11 minutes. Danilo Gallinari was the best for the Mavs with 18 points but the team shot 31% from the field.

Memphis Grizzlies 57-15

Dwight Howard is making a name for himself with this team as the “Centre Eater” as opposing centres can’t seem to stay on the court. In our 115-103 win over the Clippers Howard had 29 points and fouling out DeAndre Jordan in only 15 minutes which is about the norm. Antoine Martin had 16 points in 22 minutes off the bench. Dion Waiters had a good game with 19 points and 8 assists and Christopher de Castro helped him with 17 points.

Memphis Grizzlies 58-15

John Wall went 4/20 from the field and I’ve just realised that he is shooting 38% from the field on the season which is terrible. Luckily for us Dwight and Kenneth combined for 51 points, 24 rebounds and 9 blocks as we run away from the Warriors 98-88. Golden State had six players in double figures but their leading scorer was Charles Canady with 13 points on 20 shots.

Memphis Grizzlies 59-15

In our game against Sacramento we fell in a heap, getting down by 17 points at quarter time on the way to a 110-81 rout at the hands of the Kings. DeMarcus Cousins had 32 points and 9 rebounds while Marcus Thornton put up 23 points. Kenneth Faried fouled out in 13 minutes as Ekpe Udoh had a great game with 3 points, 8 rebounds and 6 blocks off the bench.

Memphis Grizzlies 59-16

This is the game that will most likely crown the best team in the West as Utah visit us. Lebron James had 20 points while Derrick Favors put up 18 points and 16 rebounds but it was the Centre Eater who pulled through. Sure Dwight’s numbers weren’t too flashy with 20 points and 9 rebounds but he did foul Mark Lewis out in only 16 minutes. Paul George was our best with 23 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 blocks and 4 steals in a fantastic all around game.

Memphis Grizzlies 60-16

That puts us 2.5 games ahead of Utah with six games to go.

Well that didn’t work well. We didn’t lead at all against the 14-63 Miami Heat as we went down 103-98 which just sucks honestly. Marcello Locatelli had 27 points with Marco Barker shooting 10/10 from the foul line in only 17 minutes for 14 points. In comparison Dwight Howard went 10/24 from the foul line for 28 points with John Wall putting up 19 points and 7 assists but I really don’t want to talk about this game with two games against New Orleans coming up soon.

Memphis Grizzlies 60-17

The next night we let out our anger against Phoenix, blasting them 120-103 with Dwight Howard putting up 33 points and 14 rebounds with John Wall running rings around Alfred Abney with 31 points. Jared Arenas was the best for the Suns with 19 points.

Memphis Grizzlies 61-17

Our first game against New Orleans was a 118-93 away stinker. Eric Gordon and Lewis Vines combined for 48 points which made up for Anthony Davis’ 11 points and 9 rebounds. Paul George was our best with 21 points but we turned the ball over a massive 26 times in the game which is never going to get us a win.

Memphis Grizzlies 61-18

We’re only one game ahead of Utah now, with three games to go.

We get our revenge against New Orleans with a 115-91 victory as Paul George was one block away from a 5x5 with 30 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, 5 steals and 4 blocks in the win. John Wall was the pass master with 15 points and 19 assists. Eric Gordon and Anthony Davis were troubled all night with Michael Call being with best with 20 points off the bench.

Memphis Grizzlies 62-18

John Wall is really starting to gel which is great news for the playoffs, tonight having 24 points, 7 assists and 6 rebounds in our 116-104 away win over Houston. Antoine Martin was also fantastic with 25 points in 27 minutes off the bench. Meyers Leonard picked up the slack for James Harden with 22 points as Harden fouled out in 19 minutes with 12 points.

Memphis Grizzlies 63-18

The Jazz lost against the bottom placed Lakers so the #1 seed is ours with one game to go, we are 1.5 games ahead of Utah so I’ll get Rick Carlisle to rest our starters for the last game.

Our starters for our last game against Dallas are –
PG – Raymond Felton
SG – Joe Abney
SF – Antoine Martin
PF – Ekpe Udoh
C – Nikola Vucevic

We get flogged obviously 109-91 but it was good to see some of the other guys on the squad get a go. Antoine Martin had 30 points, Joe Abney put up 11 points and 9 rebounds while Dante Cunningham had 14 points and 6 rebounds and Malik Cunningham had 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 steals. Danilo Gallinari was the best of ground with 18 points, 9 rebounds and 8 assists in the win.

Memphis Grizzlies 63-19

Western Conference Final Standings
1 - Memphis Grizzlies – 63-19 (.768)
2 - Utah Jazz – 62-20 (.756)
3 - Minnesota Timberwolves – 61-21 (.744)
4 - Oklahoma City Thunder – 56-26 (.683)
5 - San Antonio Spurs – 54-28 (.659)
6 - New Orleans Hornets – 52-30 (.634)
7 - Denver Nuggets – 45-37 (.451)
8 - Sacramento Kings – 37-45 (.451)
Last – Phoenix Suns – 22-60 (.268)

Eastern Conference Final Standings
1 - Detroit Pistons – 70-12 (.854)
2 - Washington Wizards – 56-26 (.683)
3 - Charlotte Bobcats – 53-29 (.646)
4 - Cleveland Cavaliers – 48-34 (.585)
5 - New York Knicks – 47-35 (.573)
6 - Indiana Pacers – 45-37 (.549)
7 - Milwaukee Bucks – 44-38 (.537)
8 - Toronto Raptors – 42-40 (.512)
Last – Miami Heat – 15-67 (.183)

So as you can see, even though the West have six teams with 50 wins or over, the favourite is still an East team in Detroit.

Clearly, Ron Winston needs to be rescued from the Pacers (Ironically the same team who drafted you know who.) Does it get even more scary with Winston as a Hoosier like Yeaton was? I forgot to check that when I was skimming through.

Unfortunately Winston went to Bradley. He won't be as good as Yeaton but he definitely plays like him. He didn't play much this season as he is a rookie but I can see him being a 17-18ppg/5-6rpg kind of player if he does everything right with some good (not great) defence.

2019 NBA Playoffs

Eastern Conference
#1 Detroit vs. #8 Toronto
#2 Washington vs. #7 Milwaukee
#3 Charlotte vs. #6 Indiana
#4 New York vs. #5 Cleveland

Western Conference
#1 Memphis vs. #8 Denver
#2 Utah vs. #7 New Orleans
#3 Minnesota vs. #6 San Antonio
#4 Sacramento vs. #5 Oklahoma City

Yep, the eighth placed Kings won their division so are awarded the 4th seed, so instead of playing against a team with a record of 37-45 we play one that had a season record of 45-37. What a rip. We won the season series 3-1 against the Nuggets but they have been playing very well with the insertion of Murman Andronikov into the starting line-up.

Western Conference First Round – Denver vs. Memphis

Point Guard
Harrison Barnes vs. John Wall
18.2 points, 3.3 assists, 5.3 rebounds vs. 14.3 points, 8.6 assists, 4.7 rebounds

Barnes is a 6’8” SF who somehow still has a starting position here. Even though Wall has been shooting poorly all season his defence and ball distribution has been top notch and should continue here.

Winner - Memphis

Shooting Guard
Murman Andronikov vs. Mike Lloyd
13.6 points, 7.7 assists, 4.3 rebounds vs. 7.6 points, 2.3 assists, 2.7 rebounds

This is a strange match-up as Murman is a SG who is playing like a PG on this team and is 6’8” while Lloyd starts for the Grizz but only plays about 20 minutes a game. If the Nuggets want to pull off this upset Murman needs to be more of a distributor and let his scoring come naturally.

Winner - Denver

Small Forward
Chris Hampton vs. Paul George
12.5 points, 1.6 assists, 4.2 rebounds vs. 14.9 points, 3.7 assists, 5.9 rebounds

One third of Memphis’ fantastic front court rotation George is hoping to have a great series against Hampton. The Fifth year Nugget won’t have anything to do with it though, as Hampton has the tendency to pull his stack from time to time.

Winner - Memphis

Power Forward
Chris Drexler vs. Kenneth Faried
19.2 points, 1.3 assists, 7.7 rebounds vs. 18.7 points, 1.4 assists, 9.8 rebounds

Two players that were traded for each other this match-up is as close as you can hope for. Drexler may be a little better in sheer talent but Faried and Dwight Howard have formed a massive PF/C combination that brings this back to a draw. Must see basketball here.

Winner - Draw

Centre
Perry Jones III vs. Dwight Howard
13.6 points, 1.7 assists, 6.7 rebounds vs. 20.0 points, 1.4 assists, 10.1 rebounds

Roh row, Shaggy. Dwight Howard is known as the “Centre Eater” these days with actual centres getting fouls like they are going out of fashion. Jones is a 6’11”, 234lb SF who will not only get eaten; he will get regurgitated and then fed to Howard’s bird children. I’m not really sure where I’m going with that.

Winner – Memphis

Bench
Cedric White, Amir Johnson, Jon Leuer vs. Antoine Martin, Ekpe Udoh, Nikola Vucevic

All three of the Grizzlies’ first bench players could start for other teams around the league and Martin will play a lot of minutes at SG in Mike Lloyd’s spot. White is decent but Johnson is injured and Leuer is mediocre.

Winner – Memphis

Prediction – Memphis in five.

The Memphis crowd is pumped for this playoff campaign as we are the first seed and after last year’s playoffs were we beat Utah and got to the WCF they are hoping we go even further. Dwight Howard ate Perry Jones to the tune of only 22 minutes while Superman had 21 points but it was John Wall was the main man with 23 points, 10 assists, 5 rebounds and 4 steals as we take first blood with a 128-108 win. Antoine Martin and Ekpe Udoh combined for 25 points off the bench. Chris Drexler and Kenneth Faried played to a standstill as both players fouled out in 24 minutes each, unfortunately for Denver Drexler had 13 points while Faried put up 24 points before going to the bench.

Memphis leads 1-0

It wasn’t a standstill in game two as Chris Drexler played 42 minutes for 21 points and 10 rebounds while Kenneth Faried upped him with 41 minutes, 26 points, 14 rebounds and 7 blocks as John Wall continued his fine form with 25 points as we go up 2-0 with a 96-84 lead from the opening tip win. Perry Jones played 20 minutes but Dwight Howard couldn’t take advantage, only having 9 points and 13 rebounds with Cedric White taking it to him with 17 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.

Memphis leads 2-0

Denver won it all in 2013 and want to do it again, with this crowd being as loud as you possibly can without fainting at this height. Unfortunately for them Kenneth Faried is using Chris Drexler as his personal folding chair with 36 points and 10 rebounds as we win 112-97 to go up 3-0 in the series. Dwight Howard shot 7/20 from the foul line for 17 points and 15 rebounds with Perry Jones getting more minutes than last game, three more in fact to have 12 points in 23 minutes. Antoine Martin was spectacular off the bench with 19 points, more than any Nuggets player. Chris Drexler was the top scorer for Denver with 16 points but needed 16 shots to get them.

Memphis leads 3-0

Ah! The Nuggets have some life in their bones as a whopping eight players scored in double figures, led by Harrison Barnes as they extend the series with a 117-99 victory. Chris Drexler only played 20 minutes but the team gathered around him as three bench players had 13 points or more. Dwight Howard was our best with 24 points but we couldn’t stop them getting to the line as they shot 39 free throws on the night. Perry Jones’ minute tally – 31.

Memphis leads 3-1

#3 Charlotte was the only team to sweep their series, making #6 Indiana pack their bags to another off season.

Before game five Paul George got everyone in and said what we were all thinking, that we need to take out Denver now before anything comes of it. The team took that to heart with George, Faried and Howard combining for 65 points, 37 rebounds, 11 assists, 9 blocks and 6 steals as we took the series 110-87. It seemed that the rest of the team didn’t have much to do so they just played excellent defence as Denver shot 43% from the field. Perry Jones played 27 minutes before fouling out while Chris Drexler top scored for the vanquished with 20 points while Murman Andronikov nearly had a triple double with 13 points, 9 assists and 7 rebounds. On to the next round!

Memphis wins 4-1

One of the best games I have ever seen was game six of the Cleveland/New York series. Let me paint a picture – New York were leading 3-2 in the series and if they won this one at home they would go through to the next round. All was going to plan for the Knicks when they lead by 15 going into the final term with Kyrie Irving not playing because of a broken leg. The Cavs finally decided to wake up and went on a 40-25 last quarter to tie the game and force overtime. This back and forth went on for four overtimes before the Knicks finally got away, winning the game and the series 154-142. Rudy Gay had 25 points, Altron Johnson had 29 points and Andre Iguodala 22 points and 9 assists off the bench with Steph Curry leading the way with 20 points and 10 assists. For the Cavs Brennan Weber put up 29 points and 12 rebounds, Andrew Bynum had 28 points and 9 rebounds, Alonzo Gee was there for 24 points while Tyreke Evans had the devil’s triple double with 21 points, 11 assists and 10 turnovers. Both teams shot over 50% from the field and from three and there was 93 free throws shot throughout the game. Absolutely massive game and will go down in the history books.

In less exciting news, #1 Detroit beat #8 Toronto, #4 Sacramento knocked out our bogey team # Oklahoma City and #6 San Antonio upset #3 Minnesota in six games. Both 2/7 match-ups are going the distance and I would love to see Utah go home early.

Unfortunately both #2 teams went through, with Utah beating New Orleans 99-92 and Washington beating up on Milwaukee 90-78.

Up next – Who we should have played in the first round, the Sacramento Kings.

2019 NBA Playoffs

Eastern Conference
#1 Detroit vs. #4 New York
#3 Washington vs. #3 Charlotte

Western Conference
#1 Memphis vs. #4 Sacramento
#2 Utah vs. #6 San Antonio

We won the season series 3-1 and I’m pretty confident that we will get through to the WCF but I have said that before and it has backfired on me so we need to keep up our guard and do everything we can to make it a short series.

Western Conference Semi Finals – Sacramento vs. Memphis

Point Guard
Jimmer Fredette vs. John Wall
4.0 points, 2.3 assists, 1.0 rebound vs. 18.6 points, 7.4 assists, 4.2 rebounds

Usually Jarrett Jack will be starting at PG but the Kings are trying something different by having Jack lead the second unit. This may backfire because Wall was a scoring machine last series and Fredette isn’t a very good defender.

Winner - Memphis

Shooting Guard
Marcus Thornton vs. Mike Lloyd
26.5 points, 1.3 assists, 5.8 rebounds vs. 9.2 points, 2.0 assists, 2.4 rebounds

If the Kings want to pull off this upset Thornton will have to take his game to another level. Sure 26.5 points per game is a good start but with Cousins going up against the Centre Eater he will need to take the lead. Lloyd is a decent defender but Thornton will go up against Antoine Martin for most of the games.

Winner - Sacramento

Small Forward
Terrence Ross vs. Paul George
8.5 points, 2.0 assists, 3.0 rebounds vs.15.4 points, 7.6 assists, 7.0 rebounds

With Kenneth Faried and Dwight Howard doing the bulk of the scoring for the Grizzlies George has been able to do the other things needed for this team to win, shown by his rebound and assist numbers. He is actually leading the team in assists which is a big deal with such a great passer on the team like John Wall. Ross is going to have a hard time against George in this series.

Winner - Memphis

Power Forward
Thomas Robinson vs. Kenneth Faried
15.0 points, 2.3 assists, 10.3 rebounds vs. 23.2 points, 1.0 assist, 10.2 rebounds

Faried absolutely destroyed Chris Drexler last series and will probably do the same here because Robinson just isn’t at the same level as Drexler.

Winner - Memphis

Centre
DeMarcus Cousins vs. Dwight Howard
23.5 points, 0.5 assists, 10.7 rebounds vs. 18.8 points, 2.2 assists, 11.8 rebounds

The old(er) versus the newer. Cousins has been electric this season, being a top five player in the league. He shouldn’t overlook how good Howard has been against opposing centres even if he hasn’t hit the scoreboard hard he has fouled out a lot of good big men. This is the match-up of the series.

Winner - Draw

Bench
Bismack Biyombo, Thomas Boone, Jarrett Jack vs. Antoine Martin, Ekpe Udoh, Nikola Vucevic

Biyombo and Jack should play big minutes and Martin is the super-sub, not starting but playing starter minutes. Here is a team that has the depth to stay with the Grizzlies.

Winner – Draw

Prediction – Memphis in six.

Even though we were the favourites I still had some doubts that we could get through this, but that was more likely to be butterflies than anything else. Unfortunately for my stomach, Sacramento took the first game in a track meet 123-117 as Marcus Thornton had 32 points while his running buddy DeMarcus Cousins had 25 points, 13 rebounds and 8 turnovers. Kenneth Faried did what it said on the box by beating up on Thomas Robinson with 32 points and 10 rebounds while John Wall had 23 points and 14 assists but we just couldn’t stop Cousins and Thornton which will need to change.

Sacramento leads 1-0

Our crowd wasn’t very happy with our last performance so turned up in droves to see us play better and equal the series. DeMarcus Cousins fouled out in 32 minutes with only 20 points while Marcus Thornton needed 27 shots to get 23 points as we never let the Kings lead in a 113-97 series tying win. Kenneth Faried was our best with 22 points and 11 rebounds while Antoine Martin was great off the bench with 22 points in 27 minutes. The guy who really won it for us was Mike Lloyd who had 15 points and 8 assists but was the main culprit for keeping Marcus Thornton to a 6/27 night.

Series tied 1-1

It’s nice in California this time of year, and it’s even nicer when Marcus Thornton goes 4/20 from the field for 12 points as we get back home court advantage with a 109-85 victory. Dwight Howard has 18 points and 16 rebounds as he fouled our DeMarcus Cousins in only 26 minutes. John Wall got back to his assist racking best with 19 points and 12 assists as I reckon this game may have broken the Kings’ back.

Memphis leads 2-1

Well I was wrong. Jarrett Jack has taken over the starting PG position and racked up 23 points and 9 assists, most of them going to Marcus Thornton who had 32 points but that didn’t stop us getting out to a five point lead at three quarter time. We seemed to stop playing after that as Sacramento goes on a 40-22 final term to tie the series again with a 113-100 win. Kenneth Faried was our best with 21 points and 14 rebounds but the Kings hit 16 three pointers and forced us to turn the ball over 20 times. I always talk about our team’s defensive skills but it was us getting the brunt of their harassing defence.

Series tied 2-2

To make matters worse Antoine Martin has sprained his wrist and will be less than 100% for a week or so.

Martin played in game five but was obviously in pain, but he told me before the game that anything short of a severed leg won’t stop him from playing. Marcus Thornton feasted on the injured Martin with 31 points but DeMarcus Cousins went 0/5 from the field for only 5 points and 13 rebounds. Luckily for him Thomas Robinson woke up with 20 points, 11 rebounds and 5 steals. That all sounds like a win to Sacramento, right? John Wall says no as our leader had 31 points and 8 assists as we sneak past the Kings 95-91 to get to the edge of the WCF. Dwight Howard fouled out but not before putting up 17 points, 13 rebounds and 8 blocks, all on DeMarcus Cousins.

Memphis leads 3-2

Both East series have finished with the #1 and #2 seeds going through in five games. Also Kenneth Faried has strained his knee and even though he is still going to play he will be greatly hampered.

Marcus Thornton went 7/18 from the field for 19 points and DeMarcus Cousins went 2/12 for 13 points and 12 rebounds and they still force a game seven with a 105-93 win. Thomas Robinson took advantage of the injured Faried with 22 points and 8 rebounds but the main reason they won is that we had nine more fouls and they shot 17 more free throws than us which is definitely some home cooking. Paul George had 26 points but Kenneth Faried was obviously hurting with only 2 points and 3 rebounds in 25 minutes.

Series tied 3-3

I really hope we win game seven because #2 Utah has been upset by #6 San Antonio in six games as the Spurs are going to the WCF.

Game seven. One game is all that is needed to maybe save my job here and could get us all the way to the NBA Finals. But we need to beat the Kings for one more time. We have been amazing at home this season and all signs point to us getting through to the next round. Which is why our performance was so disappointing. We shot 38% from the field and 56% from the line as we go down with a whimper again in a game seven as the Kings wipe us 103-92. Marcus Thornton needed 27 shots to get 29 points as all five of their starters were in double figures. That couldn’t be said for us as Kenneth Faried is still hurting with 8 points and Mike Lloyd laid a goose egg. Paul George was our best with 14 points, 10 assists and 8 rebounds. I’m going to miss this team.

Sacramento wins 4-2

In the Conference Finals Detroit took out Washington 4-1 to no-one’s surprise but the surprise was the Kings and Spurs series went to another game seven. Ernest Jameson actually did something with 27 points and 14 rebounds as the #6 Spurs are going to the NBA Finals with a 112-95 game seven win.

2019 NBA Finals – San Antonio Spurs vs. Detroit Pistons

Game One
San Antonio 105 – Detroit 111 (DET 1-0)
Player of the Game – John Johnson – 39 points, 6 rebounds

Game Two
San Antonio 74 – Detroit 103 (DET 2-0)
Player of the Game – John Johnson – 38 points, 6 rebounds

Game Three
Detroit 113 – San Antonio 98 (DET 3-0)
Player of the Game – Greg Monroe – 27 points, 17 assists, 12 rebounds, 4 blocks, 4 steals (WOW)

Game Four
Detroit 76 – San Antonio 92 (DET 3-1)
Player of the Game – Ernest Jameson – 18 points, 17 rebounds

Game Five
Detroit 95 – San Antonio 111 (DET 3-2)
Player of the Game – Jamal Howell – 24 points, 8 rebounds

Game Six
San Antonio 84 – Detroit 110 (DET 4-2)
Player of the Game – John Johnson – 26 points, 5 assists

Well that didn’t surprise anyone, the 70-12 Pistons winning the championship which is their second in a row and third in five years. What did surprise me was Greg Monroe’s game three performance which will go down as one of the best of all time in an NBA Finals game.

It’s lottery time so let’s see if I can snag a team with a high draft pick.

14 – Atlanta (0)
13 – Boston (0)
12 – Brooklyn (0)
11 – Philadelphia (0)
10 – Golden State (0)
9 – Dallas (0)
8 – Chicago (-1)

Boston have jumped.

7 – Orlando (-1)
6 – LA Clippers (-1)
5 – Portland (-1)
4 – Miami (-3)
3 – LA Lakers (0)
2 – Phoenix (0)
1 – Boston (+7)

Congrats to the Celtics who now have a superstar in Raul Lopez.

The awards are announced and I would love to see Kenneth Faried and Dwight Howard get into the All NBA teams.

Most Valuable Player:
Kevin Durant, Oklahoma City Thunder – 31.5 points, 1.5 assists, 7.7 rebounds, 1.0 steal, 1.3 blocks

Second MVP in a row and third overall.

Defensive Player of the Year:
Anthony Davis, New Orleans Hornets – 17.7 points, 1.8 assists, 9.5 rebounds, 2.0 steals, 3.8 blocks

I really don’t see him giving this award up any time soon.

Sixth Man of the Year:
Iman Shumpert, Minnesota Timberwolves – 14.0 points, 5.1 assists, 3.9 rebounds, 2.8 steals, 0.2 blocks

Should be starting for the Timberwolves but good on him.

Rookie of the Year:
Brooks Badu, Philadelphia 76ers – 13.1 points, 6.7 assists, 3.0 rebounds, 0.9 steals, 1.0 block

Made a fool out of me and I’m happy for it. Hopefully he can continue his fine form.

Lawrence Frank, Detroit Pistons – 70-12 (.854)

Obviously.

I got the phone call I had been dreading ever since we lost that game seven against Sacramento.

“Hello Yaxley, how are you today?” Mr Hershey starts.
“Yeah, OK good to see the Celtics get the number one pick,” small talk on my end.
“Let me start, this team is not what I wanted. It costs way too much than I wanted and you didn’t even get into the NBA Finals! This team that is worth over $80 million couldn’t even beat a team that finished below .500 in the regular season. I am not happy with you, in fact I’m outraged that you thought that this would fly.”
I can picture a vein on his forehead starting to pulse.
“And you deliberately disobeyed me!” He continues. “I told you that I didn’t want to be in the luxury cap and you went there anyway. If we won the title then I could have let it slide but this is inexcusable. Clear out your office, you’re fired.”

With that he hung up and I wasn’t a part of the Memphis Grizzlies anymore. Oh well, I better hit the phones to see if anyone wants me.

I get four messages from teams that want my services as the General Manager of their team – Indiana, Dallas, Seattle and Nevada. Again it’s up to you readers, who should I go with? Here are the pros and cons of each team.

Indiana Pro
-Great young talent – Ron Winston, Alexander Verhaeren, Kawhi Leonard, Jim Turner
-Great owner who sees this team as a basketball club, not an investment

Indiana Con
-No lottery draft pick
-Quite a few terrible contracts for average players

Dallas Pro
-Amazing owner who will stop and nothing to get a championship
-Bonefide superstar in Brandon Jennings
-Number nine draft pick

Dallas Con
-Terrible balance with way too many SFs
-Loads of nearly unmovable contracts

Seattle and Nevada Pro
-Blank slate as expansion teams
-High draft picks

Seattle and Nevada Con
-Starting from the very bottom
-Unknown owner status
