Game #12

Postby randy » Sat Mar 16, 2013 11:03 pm

12/22/94: Colgate (7-4) @ Sam Houston St (9-2)
COLG is +2 in team prestige

Pre-game Notes
1. COLG is one of the highest scoring team in the nation, lead by their SG who is scoring 19 ppg (with at least 3 3PT shots per game). 3 other starters average at least 9 ppg. An outside shooting team vs and inside scoring team
Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto (mostly Motion) / Heavy Inside
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 3 / 60%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 10
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: Auto / 8 (a combination of 1-2-2 and man; when doing man: double on everyone, except PG)
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 9
Tip off (1st Half)

15:53, Up 4-2
COLG is 0-4 FG

11:42, Up 15-10
Cook on the bench with 2 fouls

7:22, Up 26-12
We continue to hound COLG's shooters; they are now 3-13. Both teams in penalty

3:57, Up 35-19
Whistles being called almost on every possession!

Halftime, Up 42-26
We were leading by 21, but COLG closed out the half with a 5-0 run. Majerus has been sensational with 17 pts off the bench

Start of 2nd Half

15:09, Up 52-30

10:34, Up 62-42
Cook and Carr also in double figure scoring

6:12, Up 72-47
I don't see COLG being able to come back here. I took out Cook; light day in the office for him with 14 pts in only 18 mins of play

4:57, Up 76-51
One by one, I pulled out my starters.

Final score: Colgate - 58, Sam Houston St - 82

Other Notes
1. At the rate he is going, Majerus (12.3 ppg, 60% FG) could be named an All Conference Player, without starting a single game

Game #13

Postby randy » Sun Mar 17, 2013 2:34 am

12/26/94: Tulsa (6-3) @ Sam Houston St (10-2)
Tulsa is +8 in team prestige

Pre-game Notes
1. We conclude our non-conference schedule against a team who plays the same stye as we do, grinding it out inside. They prefer to keep the score low, and are a good defensive rebounding team
Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto (mostly Motion) / Heavy Inside
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 3 / 60%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 10
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: Auto / 8 (a combination of 2-3 and man; when doing man: double on everyone, except PG)
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 9
Tip off (1st Half)

15:19, Up 9-2
Tulsa is 1-6 FG

11:58, Up 11-5
3 turn overs each

6:32, Up 20-11
Lots of misses by both teams; 11-36 FG combined

2:32, Up 20-15
I can't remember when we last scored! We're shooting 24%FG

Halftime, Up 24-19
FG shooting comparison is 28-33%. Coulibaly and Carr combined for 3-14. We only have 8 pts in the paint

Start of 2nd Half

16:27, Down 24-25
Tulsa is playing the best interior defense we have faced so far. They have 7 blks, but more importantly, it has completely taken away our inside game. I will shift to a more balanced attack

10:48, Up 29-25
We scored our 1st FG of the half; almost 10 minutes gone. F Griffin has 4 fouls

3:27, Up 48-45
Offense beginning to pick up for both teams. Finally, Cook getting some inside baskets

F Griffin was fouled while shooting a J. 2 FTs. Missed both!. They rebound. Still up 3

They turned it over (traveling). Majerus gets a basket. Up 5. Their C responds with jump shot. He has 13 pts. Up 3

Cook misses his shot, but last touch on Tulsa. My best offensive unit is on the floor now

2:00, Up 50-47

F Griffin made a bad pass to intended for Carr. It's our 13th turn over.

They miss a 3. Carr rebounds. F Griffin pass to Majerus. He passes to Carr on the left baseline. Carr puts up a shot and knocks it down!

1:14, Up 52-47

Tulsa didn't call time out. We will go 2-3 from now on. Their PF puts up a shot. Off the iron. Scramble for the loose ball. Last touch Tulsa. I call time out

0:55, Up 52-47
I put in a 3 guard lineup. Slow down the pace. No off freedom. Tulsa only has 3 team fouls

Tulsa goes on a full court press. F Griffin easily breaks it. They foul F Griffin. Only the 4th team foul. 0:50

Three consecutive fouls on Tulsa. And it only chopped off 3 secs on the clock?!

Tulsa is on the penalty. 1-1 for F Griffin. Earlier in the game, he missed both FTs.

Hi missed again! They grab the rebound and immediately called timeout. 0:44. Still up 5

I inserted a tall lineup for defensive rebounding purposes. We'll continue with the 2-3 zone

They put up a 3. Miss. Tulsa is 0-7 from 3. Their C grabs the offensive board. They attempt another 3. Miss again. K Griffin controls the board. F Griffin gets fouled again

This time, F Griffin converts both. Tulsa called another time out, but this game is over except for the final score. Up 7. 0:14

They hit a 3. But K Griffin quickly runs down court. He received the pass from Carr and goes for the layup. He missed but got fouled while shooting the layup as time expired.

But wait. K Griffin should be awarded with FTs, right? It was obviously in the act of shooting, but even if it wasn't, Tulsa is in the penalty.

Despite my reasoning to them, the refs simply said no FTs.

My assistants trying to calm me down, and said to me "Coach, doesn't matter; we won the game".

Final score: Tulsa - 50, Sam Houston St - 54

Postby randy » Sun Mar 17, 2013 8:53 am

1/2/95: Nicholls St (6-7, 0-0) @ Sam Houston St (11-2, 0-0)
NIC is -4 in team prestige. We start off the season against the team we faced in last season's conference tournament finals.

Pre-game Notes
1. NIC's offense has been anemic this season. After the non-conference games, they rank last in the conference in both pts scored, and offensive efficiency. No surprise, NIC is currently running the slowest tempo in the conference.
2. We'll start the game by running a faster tempo than usual.
Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto (mostly Motion) / Heavy Inside
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 5 / 55%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 10
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: Auto / 8 (when using man: double on everyone, except PG)
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 9
Tip off (1st Half)

13:00, Up 8-7
Why does the opposition always convert a desperation outside shot when their shot clock is just about to expire? It happened twice already in this game

7:25, Up 20-11
We had more opportunities to score, but our FG% is only 37%. F Griffin has been sitting in the bench for quite some time, with 2 fouls

3:24, Up 24-23
NIC suddenly heat up, hitting jumpers after jumpers.

Halftime, Up 36-27
Not happy with our performance in the half. If not for Smith's quality minutes (6 pts, 2-2 3PT), the score would be much closer.
We had 18 inside pts in the half. I'll revert back to the our usual strategies: man defense exclusively, off pace of 3

Start of 2nd Half

15:58, Up 44-32
We're beginning to get some inside pts. Cook has 14 pts and 5 stls. NIC's starting PG continues to cause a lot of problems for us; he often beats his man, and consistently hits his jumpers (5-6 FG, 10 pts)

11:51, Up 47-34
Our turn overs and poor FG shooting allowing NIC to be within striking distance

7:22, Up 56-34
NIC committing a turn over on almost every possession. They have scored only 2 pts in the last 8+ mins

4:30, up 62-43
NIC has been living mostly from the FT line. We are being called for too many fouls. I got T'd up

Final score: Nicholls St - 52, Sam Houston St - 72
It became a FT shooting bonanza in the end

Box Score
Cook 16, 8, 0, 7 stls
Carr 15, 5, 1
Rowles 9, 8, 3, 2 stls
Majerus 7, 1, 0
Smith 6, 1, 0
F Griffin 6, 0, 3, 5 fouls
Granville 5, 3, 0
K Griffin 5, 1, 0
Coulibaly 3, 6, 6
Thomas 0, 1, 1
Other Notes
1. We picked up a total of 13 sts
2. The game took longer to finish. The 2 teams combined for 39 fouls and 45 FTAs.
3. ISR = 2.0 (it was lower in the 1st half, due to the quicker pace)

Game #15

Postby randy » Sun Mar 17, 2013 10:38 am

1/5/95: Sam Houston St (12-2, 1-0) @ Texas San Antonio (8-6, 0-1)
UTSA is -3 in team prestige. Our winning margin against UTSA last season was 2 pts, on both games

Pre-game Notes
1. UTSA has a new weapon this season, with their FR SG averaging 17.2 ppg (3rd in conference).
2. As a team, UTSA does not score a lot pts outside of their star SG. However, they are do take care of the defensive glass; they rank 1st in DR% in the conference.
3. They play 2-3 zone as their main defense, which is our weak point. We need to counter that with a more balanced offense
Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto (mostly Motion) / Balanced
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 4 / 55%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 10
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: Auto / 8 (when using man: double on everyone, except PG)
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 9
Tip off (1st Half)

15:59, Tied at 6
As expected, UTSA is using a lot of 2-3 zone. We hit a couple of outside shots, but so did they

11:23, Up 12-11
Cook with 2 fouls. Their star SG has already connected on 2 3s

7:18, Tied at 16
We went cold; currently shooting at 36%. That will give UTSA more reason to continue using the 2-3 zone. I go to a 3 guard line up

3:37, Up 25-23
3 guard a bit effective in generating offense

Halftime, Down 27-28
Went cold again towards the end of the half. We're shooting 39% FG, while UTSA is 5-9 from 3 PT. UTSA was not called for a single foul! We're playing bad, but it's still a close game.

Start of 2nd Half

15:51, Down 30-34
Cook called for his 3rd foul, but he remains in the floor

12:30, Up 41-36
Finally, a small run for us, including a rare 3pt shot. UTSA is also "cooperating" by committing a total of 16 turn overs already

9:40, Up 50-40
15 offensive rebounds for us; Majerus had 6 of those. If we will win this game, it is purely because of effort and determination

2 more turn overs for UTSA, resulted in 2 Majerus baskets on our end. On the next defensive play, Cook swatted away a shot by their C. The UTSA coaching staff had seen enough, and called for a time out.

Majerus is exhausted. He has 10 and 7, but the intangibles that he bring to the court goes beyond the stat lines. I'll give him a short rest
7:53, Up 54-40

F Griffin connected on a couple of Js, and then both teams trading baskets. This game is over. I clear the bench

3:21, Up 63-44

Final score: Sam Houston St - 68, Texas San Antonio - 46

Box Score
F Griffin 14, 4, 3
Carr 12, 2, 0, 3 tos
Cook 11, 5, 3, 2 stls
Majerus 10, 7 (6 off), 0
Rowles 9, 8, 1
Coulibaly 6, 2, 1
K Griffin 4, 2, 1
Granville 2, 0, 4, 3 stls
Jackson 0, 2, 0
Smith 0, 1, 1
Belton 0, 1, 0
Thomas 0, 0, 0

TO: -13 (10-23)
Paint: +14
2nd Chance : +12 (18-6)
Fast Break: +12
Other Notes
1. Both teams having a hard time scoring. All we did was to have more shots than them; we're +17 in FGA
2. That 8-min stretch in the middle of the 2nd half was the big moment for us, where we outscored UTSA 24-6. Majerus played a huge part in that run.
3. ISR = 1.1 (as expected, we didn't get as much inside pts as we normally do, because of UTSA's zone defense)
1/9/95: #21 Sam Houston St (13-2, 2-0) @ Central Arkansas (8-7, 1-1)
UTSA is -6 in team prestige. We're #23 in the coaches poll, and #12 in RPI

Pre-game Notes
1. UCA plays the fastest tempo in the conference. They don't rebound well, but they are effective in forcing turn overs.
2. UCA has 3 wing players who are shooting 40+% from 3PT. In their last home game against Lamar, they had 28 3PAs.
3. UCA plays man-to-man defense most of the time.
Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto (mostly Motion) / Favor Inside
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 4 / 55%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 10
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: Auto / 8 (when using man: double on everyone, except PG)
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 9
Tip off (1st Half)

15:55, Tied at 5
UCA is 1-3 3PT. Cook already has 2 turn overs

11:35, Down 9-15
UCA is 3-6 3PT

8:32, Tied at 17
We were down 9-17, but we go on an 8-0 run. Majerus was involved in every play, scoring 4 pts and dishing out 2 asts in that run. UCA is 3-7 PT. Our issue though are the turn overs; we have 7 already.

3:08, Down 25-26
UCA is 4-9 3PT

Halftime, Up 33-28
Majerus and Griffin came up big off the bench; they combined for 16 pts! We're doing good on the inside with 24 pts in the paint. Aside from turnovers (9-8), our transition defense needs to improve. We have allowed 10 fast break pts already.

We will adjust our off reb intensity down to 7. We'll also go man defense exclusively for the 2nd half

Start of 2nd Half

15:05, Up 49-35
Our offense went into high gear, scoring 16 pts in less than 5 mins. Cook now beginning to warm up, scoring our last 6 pts, We have yet to commit a turn over in this half, while UCA already has 4.

11:27, Up 60-37
We continue to score; everybody is contributing

8:49, Up 65-37

5:26, Up 69-45
This is over. All of my key players already on the bench

Final score: #21 Sam Houston St - 83, Central Arkansas - 61

Other Notes
1. I'm extremely happy with this win, as 6 players scored in double figures. It could have been 7, as Smith finished up with 8 pts. All players, including the walk ons, played today.
2. UCA ended up with 9-22 3PT. In the 2nd half, we limited their fast break pts to 4
3. We took care of the ball much better in the 2nd half, committing only 3 turn overs
3. ISR = 2.2

TAMCC is -5 in team prestige

Pre-game Notes
1. Last season, TAMCC was carried by their 2 big men. Both are back, and with the addition of a good FR SG, they now have 3 double-figure scorers in their starting lineup
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 4 / 55%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 10

5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 9
Tip off (1st Half)

15:50, Up 11-4
Cook has 5 pts. We're going mostly to Cook and Rowles, and as a result, one of TAMCC's big men already has 2 fouls

11:41, Up 17-11
Coulibaly feeling it today, with 8 pts. Both of TAMCC's big men now on the bench with 2 fouls each

7:54, Up 25-18
We switched to man defense exclusively, as TAMCC started to hit their outside shots. We have forced only 2 turn overs on them so far

Halftime, Up 44-28
Our offense was sizzling towards the end of the half, while forcing TAMCC to committing turn overs. We're shooting 67% FG. Our starting lineup accounted for 43 of our 44 pts.

Start of 2nd Half

15:31, Up 48-39
We started cold, and TAMCC's start SG now getting more involved in their offense.

Coulibaly responded with 7 straight pts, forcing TAMCC to call a timeout
13:19, Up 55-39

7:17, Up 66-51
Carr and Coulibaly always responding whenever TAMCC threatens to make a run

4:58, Up 76-53
We go on a 10-2 run in 2 mins, dousing any hope of a TAMCC rally. I will start pulling off our starters

UTA is -4 in team prestige

Pre-game Notes
1. We need to watch out on UTA's leading scorer (Vince Baker), an SG that plays the point. We usually don't double team a player at the 1 position, but it could change here in this game.
2. UTA is undefeated at home this season, including the non-conference games
Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto (mostly Motion) / Favor Inside
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 4 / 55%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 10
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: Auto / 8 (when using man: double on everyone, except PG)
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 9
Tip off (1st Half)

15:52, Down 6-8
UTA's Baker goes hot immediately, burying 2 3s already.

11:06, Up 15-12
Majerus contributing 5 pts off the bench. I decide not to adjust yet our defense

7:58, Down 17-18
UTA now 4-6 3PT. I will switch to use man defense exclusively

3:40, Up 25-22
Both teams throwing the ball away; turn over count is 7-10

Halftime, Tied at 28
19 combined turn overs. We have 18 inside pts; they have 17 pts (including 5 3s) from the outside.

Start of 2nd Half

15:31, Up 35-32
Blocked shots everywhere; both teams combining for 13

11:34, Up 45-39
We converted on 2 consecutive fast break opportunities, to open up a 6 pt lead. UTA's Baker already with 16 pts. We will start doubling on him

7:17, Up 53-43
I went with a tall lineup, with SG Coulibaly at 1 and SF Carr at 2, and it was slightly effective. Majerus is having a solid game again, with 17 pts off the bench

3:35, Up 62-45
We put a clamp on their shooters, and started missing their outside shots. We'll slow down the pace

Final score: #18 Sam Houston St - 66, Texas Arlington - 57
UTA rallied in the last 3 minutes, converting on 3 3s, but it was too late for them

Box Score

Other Notes
1. UTA had 8 blks; we had 7. Together with the 34 combined turn overs, it was already some sort of an "achievement" if a team can put up a shot. FGA count is low; 51 for us, UTA had 46. The FG% was the big difference in the game
2. UTA's Baker finished with 18 pts, but he shot 37%, had 5 tos and fouled out. This is one of the few times we had to double a player playing the PG position.
3. ISR = 2.7

Game #20

Postby randy » Tue Mar 19, 2013 3:27 am

1/23/95: #13 Sam Houston St (17-2, 6-0) @ Lamar (13-6, 4-2)
Lamar is -4 in team prestige; we lost by 20+ pts last season when we visited Lamar

Pre-game Notes
1. Lamar is #1 in the nation in pts scored, averaging 78 ppg. Although we are #21 in ppg, we rank #2 in the nation in FG% at 50.6% (Lamar is #11 at 48.1%). Defense will be key here; we are 1st in the conference in opp ppg, while Lamar is last
2. Lamar only has 2 players averaging in double digits (PG Cedric Thornton and C Jake Forrest), but they are deep. Up to 11 players are capable of contributing in the offensive end
Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto (mostly Motion) / Favor Inside
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 4 / 55%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 10
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: Man / 8 (we'l play straigtht up defense; no double team)
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 9
Tip off (1st Half)

15:46, Up 8-0
So far so good on defense; Lamar is 0-5 FG. And we are controlling the boards with 9 rebs already; 6 coming from Cook. We're 2-6 on FTs

9:59, Up 26-10
Lamar continues to foul (9), while we continue to miss FTs (6-13). K Griffin with 8 pts off the bench

5:10, Up 36-20
We started giving up a lot of fouls also

Halftime, Up 51-34
Our best offensive half, as far as I can remember. We are having a balanced attack again, with 7 players scoring at least 5 pts. Majerus has 11 pts. Rebounding has been the difference; we lead 21-6

Start of 2nd Half

14:45, Up 66-42
Yes I knew Lamar is last in the conference in defense, but I didn't anticipate they were this bad.

9:09, Up 72-51
Lamar's PG Thornton trying his best to keep Lamar in the game, with 18 pts, but he has little support from his team mates

Only thing unsettled now is how many of my players will score in double figures

Final score: #13 Sam Houston St - 89, Lamar - 72

Box Score
Coulibaly 14, 4, 1
