11/14/95: Louisiana Tech (0-1) @ Sam Houston St (0-0)
LAT is +10 in team prestige

Scouting Report
1. Primary defense: 2-3
2. Key players: PG Greg Craft scored 20 pts in their last game

Initial instructions
1. Offense Sets / Focus: Auto (mostly Motion) / Favor Outside
2. Offense Pace / Freedom: 7 / 65%
3. Off / Def Rebounding Crash: 9 / 7
4. Defense Sets / Intensity: Auto / 8
5. Pressure Set / Frequency: Auto / 9
Tip off (1st Half)

15:52, Up 8-7
Still trying to figure out our optimal defense sets. F Griffin with 2 3s already

11:35, Up 14-13

7:43, Up 20-15
LAT with 8 turn overs. I'm still adjusting with my new substitution patterns.

Halftime, Tied at 29
We're not getting the fast break pts, so we'll just max out on def rebounding

UNLV shot 67% from the field. We need to alter the pace and go all in (10), lessen def reb intensity to 5, and apply full court man defense all the time. Also increasing the def intensity to 10. F Griffin connecting on 4-4 3PTs

Start of 2nd Half

14:18, Up 42-34
F Griffin with 19 pts. LAT has 18 turn overs already

10:14, Up 47-39

7:57, Up 49-41

3:12, Up 54-48

Final score: Louisiana Tech - 52, Sam Houston St - 62

Box Score
F Griffin 25, 3, 4, 4 stls, 7-10 3PT
Burditt 11, 3, 0, 3 tos
K Griffin 8, 5, 1

Rowles 6, 4, 4, 2 stls
Jeffries 3, 1, 0
Doss 2, 3, 1
Slater 0, 2, 0
Cook 0, 0, 0
Team Stats Comparisons

REB: -12 (6-13 off rebs)
TO: -11 (13-24)
Paint: -4
2nd Chance : -6
Fast Break: -3
Other Notes
1. Last season, F Griffin was more a facilitator in our inside-focused offense. Now, he has to be more offensive-minded
2. Will this game be a pattern of what our future games will be? We didn't shoot well, we got out rebounded, gone are the days where we get 70% of our pts from the paint ... and yet we found a way to win by forcing turn overs
3. LAT's Greg Craft finished with 19 pts

We have not turned the ball over. Burditt continues his scoring spree with 13 pts

5:35, Up 25-10
BC scored only 2 pts in the last 10+ mins

Halftime, Up 29-20
We allowed BC to come back towards the end, while Burditt was on the bench; we need to play smart for the entire 40 mins. We are 1-14 3PT.

Start of 2nd Half

9:36, Up 46-30
My starters have played heavy minutes; will give a short breather to some of them. We continue to take care of the ball with only 4 turn overs. BUrditt has 23 pts
1. After a sub par debut, Burditt showed why he bagged the Norton award 2 seasons ago with Butler.
2. Our front court rotation of K Griffin, Rowles, and Doss was dominant in the glass today, grabbing a combined 24 rebounds.
3. In the first 2 games, our double-PG starting back court of F Griffin and Thomas has produced 13.5 apg.
4. BC's Jaymie Hicks had a miserable night, producing only 3 pts on 1-5 FG

Balanced scoring for both squads; Burditt with 5, and CAL's Spears with 4

6:23, Up 30-10
15-0 run! Burditt with 14 pts, but Rowles getting it done on the inside with 8 pts

3:33, Up 34-10
And CAL still can't score. And I'm happy with the team keeping the lead despite Burditt resting on the bench

Other Notes
1. We had 24 asts in this game; 20.7 apg in the 1st 3 games
2. We continue to do a good job in minimizing turn overs; only 9.0 tos per game, while forcing our opponents to 18 per game

7:23, Up 30-18
9 team fouls already for SFA

2:27, Up 38-26
Rowles with 12 pts

Halftime, Up 40-30
We capitalized on our FT, hitting 10-12. We're +10 on rebounds. Burditt has 8, but it's our balanced scoring that is the difference

Start of 2nd Half

14:42, Up 47-41
SFA's Walcott heating up with 14 pts

10:56, Up 56-43
We go on a 9-2 run, but our superb rebounding is the difference maker again

5:34, Up 65-52
My entire starting lineup on the floor to finish this game

Other Notes
1. Too many turn overs and poor perimeter defense. We got lucky with this game. Rebounding saved us
2. At the end of each game, my starting front court are very tire. I'll give Doss more minutes in future games, in order to lessen playing time of K Griffin and Rowles
3. SFA's Albert Walcott had 19 pts

7:46, Up 22-20
Burditt with 8 pts

3:00, Up 30-28
Went down 24-28, but came up with 6 unanswered pts

Halftime, Up 35-31
No team has lead by more than 5. Both theams with 6 3PTs each; Burditt has 3 3's, while USD's backup guard Eric Sims went nuts going for 3-3 3PTs in 7 mins. Increasing def intensity to 9, and def rebound crash to 9 also (USD has 5 off rebs at the half)

Start of 2nd Half

15:57, Up 38-37

11:34, Up 40-38

7:12, Up 43-42
Burditt has scored all of our 8 pts in the 2nd half

4:58, Down 43-46
We can't buy a basket; only 8 pts in 15+ minutes. I was forced to bring back Burditt after just 1 minute of rest

We finally get some pts outside of Burditt in the 2nd half, courtesy of Thomas. Thomas now with 10 pts
4:27, Down 45-46

USD's C hits a shot. Burditt missed a 3. They miss. F Griffin banks a triple!

We will go man defense the rest of the way. USD turned it over. I call another time out. Same play to Burditt
1:16, Up 54-52

Burditt catched the pass from F Griffin. Burditt makes his move to the basket. Pull up jumper .... hits the shot! Up 4. Burditt with 25 pts.

USD quickly breaks our press. Our defense breaks down. Easy basket for USD. Up 2. I call another time out. Same play. We will also abandon the press on our next defensive play

Miss the 1st. I put my 3 bigs at the same time for defensive rebound purposes. Def rebounding crash set to 10

Gets the 2nd. Up 1. 0:41. I bring back my 3-guard lineup. We dribbled to the front court and called my last timeout. Pace down to 1. This time, Burditt will get the inbound pass and isolate him
0:38, Up 56-55

Burditt gets the inbound. He dribbles. Passed to Thomas who puts up an early shot. What? I said very slow pace!!! His shot barely grazed the rim. USD rebounds, and called a timeout. I put in my 3 bigs
0:29, Up 56-55

USD's Mills puts up a shot. Missed. But they get the offensive rebound. 0:15 left

They can't get an open shot. They passed around. USD's Odom has the ball with 2 secs left. Odom is 0-4 FG and scoreless so far. Odom has no choice but to put up a desperation 3. He had a good look, but couldn't convert! K Griffin grabs the rebound. Game over. Another escape act!

Holy Cow! You graduate 9 players (4 who scored in double figures), sign just 3 recruits last year plus add 3 transfers (who can't play this year)...and you go undefeated thus far! What kind of stimulants are you using with these guys? :D

I got lucky in picking up Burditt last season (via transfer)

In his FR year at Butler, he won the Norton award. At the middle of his SO year, he got ineligible, and decided to transfer. No one wanted him. I picked him up with a 1.7 GPA and probably 10% of work ethic. Extensive tutoring last season, and luckily he got eligible. Butler's loss was Sam Houston's gain

But in reality when you won the Norton award in your FR year, and you know you don't have the brains (and work ethic) for academics, shouldn't you just declare for the draft after your FR year? In my association, undergraduates can declare early (e.g. one and done).
