Oct 2:

2 more verbal commitments to report:

6-4 172 lb JUCO pg Andy Crenshaw out of Waterville, MN.

Another tall point guard. Andy wasn't highly recruited, but we liked what we saw. He has true point guard skills, and a nice overall skill set, and can definitely help this team.

and

6'8 265 HS Center Jamar Farrel out of San Juan HS in Blanding, Utah

Another guy not widely recruited but has a nice defensive presence and can be a good role player for this team.

That leaves us with 1 remaining scholarship to offer, and we badly need to find a quality player who can play the 3.

Oct 5: Pre-season conference predictions came out and we are picked to win the conference. Like we needed that kind of pressure! Didn't anybody notice Rob Woods is now playing in Italy? Presbyterian is picked 2, conference new-comer Longwood off of that CIT championship is picked 3rd, and High Point still with 2 time Conference MVP Rod Jones is picked 4th.

Oct 16: Practice going smoothly so far. Not sure where we are going to be in another month when the season opens, but at least the new guys are melding well with the returnees for the most part, and team chemistry is pretty good. I'm probably opening my mouth too soon.

Nov 6: Scouting service seems to be of the opinion that we made a coup in our successful recruitment of C Jamar Farrel who is now ranked among the nation's top 100 recruits. A couple of the other lightly recruited young men we've received verbal commitments from garnered much more attention from bigger schools after the fact as well. I don't know if that means other schools are waiting to see who I'm interested in before jumping on them, or if they are all just sleeping at the wheel. I give most of the credit to Jeremy Patterson who has done an outstanding job since he was hired last year. The rest of the credit I give to myself for hiring Jeremy in the first place! He is tireless and a great judge of sniffing out raw talent before anyone else seems to recognize it until it's too late.

Nov 8: Our first exhibition of the season against UC San Diego whom we also played a year ago.

Larry Williams: Well, Coach Gary, the season is almost upon us again, and I'm excited to be part of it once again, and relieved I don't have to go through your grueling practices to do it. What are we looking or in tonight's exhibition?

Gary: As you know from your time here, in the first exhibition I'm looking for an opportunity for everyone to get their feet wet, and to see who might be ready to help us out as key players in our rotation.

Larry: What can we look for from all the newcomers?

Gary: Good question, Larry, and one of the most important things I'll be looking at from behind the bench as Coach Kevin runs the game on the bench. We have 4 JUCO transfers in, and they've all looked pretty good in practice, and we are anxious to see how they perform against some outside competition, especially the guards. As you know we lost so much to graduation last year, and we have some big holes to fill. As transfers they have experience, but our system has a high learning curve. We are hoping that some of them are able to grasp it quickly enough to play some heavy minutes for us. Otherwise we'll be in deep trouble.

Larry: With such an experienced team on paper, do you feel that will help us out?

Gary: Well, with Godzilla and red-shirt freshman Bradley as our only under-classmen, we know at least we won't be looking to red-shirt anyone. But beyond that, yes, maturity and experience, even at the JUCO level certainly can make a difference. Most of our guys shouldn't be too intimidated at the Division I level. Experience is probably the primary reason the coaches and media picked us to win the conference, although I'm not ashamed to tell you that sort of expectation is scary. When you look at what the Blue Hose, Longwood and High Point have coming back, experience alone isn't going to get the job done. We are going to have to execute well at both ends of the floor. It's gonna be a long season, Larry. You'll have to excuse me if I get testy with you sometimes in our interviews.

Larry: (laughing) Nobody likes to get bitten by the Barracuda, Coach. But don't forget that I played for ya. Whatever you have to say to me in front of a microphone has to be a lot easier than the night in South Carolina when you threatened to make us all walk home after the game!

Gary: (laughing) Do me a favor and tell that to all the newcomers, Larry!

Nov 8: Exhibition: DII UC San Diego Tritons vs Gardner-Webb

As always, against weak competition, you have to be careful to make too many broad judgments about your team, but, in general:

I liked our execution out of the Amoeba zone, especially with so many newcomers on the perimeter. They seemed to have a feel for setting the traps, turning over the Tritons 17 times with 9 steals. Our man-to-man was a bit spotty at times, but overall wasn't too bad.

Our offensive execution looked good shooting 47.9% for the game, which in a game like this where we are playing everyone equal minutes isn't too bad. We also only turned the ball over 11 times, with several of those coming late. We also got to the freethrow line quite a bit which is important and shot them pretty well when we got there.

We need to get better on the boards, which has never been one of strong points. We will miss the rebounds that Woods and Myers used to routinely get us from the guard positions and we need that to happen again this year to be successful. Our big men just don't rebound as well as we need them to, at least on the defensive end, and we need that from them to set up transition opportunities.

Individually, all the JUCO transfers showed us a little something that makes me feel much more confident. Jeffers and Felts combined for 15 pts and 3 stls in 29 minutes at the two, and Felts grabbed 4 rebs as well. Both look to be key components of our rotation this season. Maybe most impressive of the newcomers was point guard Chris Battle who had 10 pts, 4 asts, 3 stls and no turnovers in 15 minutes, and certainly is going to press Feeley for a starting position on this team. Giesen was 6/6 from the line at the 3 in 15 minutes and looks to take the ball to the rim and post up more than 3s we've had in the past. He doesn't have much of a perimeter shot, but may be our best man defender at the position, and is probably going to be a defensive role player off the bench.

Godzilla scored 15 points in 14 minutes, and is certainly gonna be a more highly featured component of our offense if we can get the ball to him. At the end of last season we saw a lot of growth in maturity from Josh, and he can dominate people inside at times. He needs to rebound and play better defense, but he knows that, and we hope he continues to improve in both areas as his sophomore year progresses. He does like to take the ball to the hoop though, and it's tough for most of our opponents to stop him from doing it without fouling. Because of that, we've got him shooting 200-300 freethrows a day in practice, and he's showing some improvement at the line.

Josh Brown had the usual kind of game we expect from him. Probably our best rebounder and defender among the big men, he'll look to score some as well when he has the opportunity, mostly on putbacks and block to block feeds.

Donald Moore was looking to get to the rim more tonight as well, and we need that. He's always been a good defender, but we've always known he's had the potential to score as well and need him to look for opportunities to do so.

we did win the game, btw 71-63 for whatever that's worth.

Nov 12: Exhibition: Div II Winston-Salem St. Rams @ Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs

Larry: What can you tell us about tonight's opponent, Coach?
Gary: Not a lot! (laughs) We know they were a provisionary DI team in the MEAC a few years ago, so they apparently take their basketball program seriously, even though the move didn't work out for them.
Larry: (laughs) I remember them recruiting me at the time. What can we expect out of our Bulldogs tonight?
Gary: I'll be on the bench tonight, and our focus will be on sorting out rotation for the start of the season. We have some idea who is going to get minutes, fortunately, but we still need to take a good hard look at a few people to see what they bring to the table for us. Expect to see our starters playing much heavier minutes tonight, along with the guys fighting for significant playing time.
Larry: Offensively, who is your goto guy going to be?
Gary: Well, obviously you don't easily replace a 20 point scorer like Woods easily with just one guy. We need to establish a much more balanced offense this year than we've had in the past. Obviously 'Zilla is a force inside, but he's going to be a marked man, especially the way he finished the season last year.
Larry: The guy is immense! Wish I could have had the chance to play with him. I probably would have been open all the time! (laughs)
Gary: (laughs)Care to suit up?
Larry: Sure, Coach! Just convince the NCAA to give me another year of eligibility! Probably only for about 30 seconds at a time though!(laughs)
Gary: Yep, you've put on a few lbs since your playing days, Larry, and I'm not sure it was in the weight room! (laughs) You had a great work ethic though. Gimme a couple of weeks of running you up the stairs 20 hours a week and I'd get you back in shape. (laughs) Well, to be seriously honest, Larry, that's the key for us. In order to open up the paint for Josh, we need some other guys to establish an outside perimeter presence for us, both in the starting lineup and off the bench. Getting some penetration would help a lot as well. That's something that Rob did very well for us. We need to find 3, 4...hell....er sorry, forgot we were on the radio...heck, even 5 guys who are willing to look for available shots and deliver. Those that do and work at both ends of the court are going to be the guys that get minutes going forward, and I've made that clear to everyone. It's great to show us what you have in practice, but you've got to be able to deliver it when the ball goes up at showtime too.

Wow. I mean, I know you can't make too much of anything against a weak opponent, but still....Wow. It can be hard to keep a crowd in the game in a mismatch like this, but these guys did it. There was a ton to like about our performance.

24 forced turnovers on 12 steals while turning it over just 8 times ourselves.
56% shooting from the field.
22/8 ast to turnover ratio.

Godzilla was, ...well, a monster. 24 pts in 24 minutes on 10/13 from the field. He only got to the line 4 times mainly because their big men ran for the hills afraid for their lives every time he touched the ball. I saw him using some new moves in the paint that I'd never seen him use before, and I asked him where he came up with them. "Playing that guy from UCLA(meaning 1st team All-American and top NCAA player of the year candidate Gerald Taylor) last year in the tournament, Coach. He used them so much on me and had me so confused I started taking notes up here (points to his big noggin) and practiced them all summer."

Jermaine Felts may not have had anyone saying, "Rob who?" but he certainly impressed with 15 pts, 3 asts, 5 rebs and 3 stls in 27 minutes.

Ike Fetters had the jitters in the first exhibition, and had them at the start of this game too, but after team captain and room-mate Tony Evans "hypmotized" him on the bench..(don't ask... I didn't! Evans is as crazy like a fox sometimes like Larry Williams used to be) he put on a pretty nice show too with 13 pts, 2 asts, 3 rebs, a stl, and a block in just 14 minutes. All I know is if we can get that kind of offensive production out of Felts, Fetters, and O'Conner on a nightly basis, we are going to be in good shape.

Evans himself had a real nice game as well with 9 pts, 3 asts, 6 rebs, and a steal in 24 minutes. I need to have him "hypmotize" himself into giving us those kind of role-playing numbers every night, and I'd be quite happy. Evans says he's a psych major, but sometimes I think he's more of a psych patient who happens to play basketball. Seriously though, last year when we made big comebacks in a couple of games, Evans was always in the thick of it. When he plays well he is a big sparkplug at both ends of the floor, and the guys made a good choice when they voted him team captain.

Donald Moore gave us what Donald Moore does best. 6 pts, 6 rebs and 4 stls in 21 minutes. He's extremely agile for a big man and has super quick hands. Nobody on our team understands the Amoeba Zone better than Donald. I still think he can look to score more, but still I'll take numbers like that from him as a role-player on any given night as well. He needs to teach Sheals and O'Conner how to get to the defensive glass too, because he does it better than either of them.

Then there were our point guards... my my my. Battle and Feeley combined for 14 asts and just 1 turnover. Give me THAT every night as well. Battle's outside shot wasn't quite with him tonight, but at least he's not afraid to shoot it when they leave him open. He still added 7 points. I don't need my point guards to score a lot though.. all I ask is that they value the basketball and get it into the hands of the guys who need it the most, and they definitely did that tonight.

Brown and Sheals were largely ineffective tonight, although their man defense was pretty good.

That brings us to the one thing I saw in this game I didn't like. We HAVE to rebound better than this, especially at the defensive end. O'Conner, Sheals, and Brown had just 3 defensive boards between them and that simply won't cut it. In fact Brown had 0 rebounds at either end of the floor in 16 minutes, although admittedly that's not like him. If Evans and Moore are the only guys over 6 foot tall going to the defensive glass on a nightly basis, we are gonna have trouble. Kerr usually helps out in that regard, but he had an off night and wound up playing just 9 minutes. Derrick Bradley usually rebounds well in practice, but had none in 12 minutes tonight.

The rebounding was really the only negative to come out of this game, but since we rebounded rather poorly in the first exhibition too, it remains a big concern.

Oh, and btw we won 84-52.

Meet the 2013-2014 Runnin' Bulldogs

Postby CoachC » Sat Mar 30, 2013 8:09 am

Arenas, Ronnie JR 6'2 201 lb Guard
Walk-on. Will primarily be a practice player. Is athletic with quick hands, has a nice jumpshot and a very good passer and rebounder for his size and will challenge our guards while playing on the scout team. Could see some minutes if injuries or foul trouble dictate it.

Battle, Chris JR 6'0 189 lb Guard
Junior college transfer playing his first season at Boiling Springs. Has a deadly outside shot with lots of range. Athletic with exceptionally quick hands. Able to make some "are you kidding me?" passes. Should challenge Reggie Feeley as our starting Point Guard this season.

Bradley, Derrick FR(R) 6'7 201 lb Forward
Redshirt freshman is rather small for a 4, but has a big wingspan and excellent leaping ability. Along with his quickness and work ethic that could conceivably make him a good rebounder and lockdown defender eventually. Is athletic and has a good enough jump shot to see him get minutes at the 3 as well, which is where he may eventually find his niche. Right now his skills lag behind his raw athletic talent, and he's going to have to work hard to find minutes this season.

Brown, Josh JR 6'9 239 lb Center/Forward
Conference freshman of the year 2 years ago, he usually has a stabilizing effect on our front line, and pushes Josh O'Conner in practice. Has good leaping ability but needs to position himself better for rebounding and blocking shots. We'd also like to see him be a bit more of an offensive threat. His offensive game was developing nicely his freshman year, but last season unselfishly took a back seat to O'Conner in our offense. The downside is he became a bit too unselfish perhaps. Besides being capable in the posts he also has decent intermediate jumpshot. All things aside though, Josh usually gives us something in most games and is a hard worker. Whether off the bench as O'Conner's backup, or starting at the 4 he figures to be a key role player in our rotation once again.

Evans, Tony SR 6'3 185 lb Forward.
Voted team captain by his teammates, the affable and hard-working Evans gets the most he can out of his small size. Struggles often on nights when forced to go up against the bigger 3s, but has a good nose for the ball and rebounds well for his small stature. Doesn't look to score much because of the slow release on his jumper, but can hurt a team if they leave him open. When he's in a groove, he'll often be the one sparking our team with transition baskets out of our Amoeba Zone. A good team player, Tony doesn't complain about minutes, even when he saw them drop considerably last season. He still figures to be a part of the rotation, and on some nights, depending on match-ups may get some starts. He has occasionally played the 2 for us in the past as well and is a good passer and remains an option there as well.

Feeley, Reggie SR 6'1 200 lb Guard
Often inconsistent in the past, Reggie finally started to reach his potential towards the end of the season when we made our run to the conference championship. Has always been an excellent passer, and his ball-handling late last season finally stopped causing me to pull my hair out. Has a decent jump shot, but sometimes falls in love too much with the 3 which isn't his strength. Has quick hands and a good nose for the ball, which helps generate some transition offense too at times. All Reggie needs to do is play within himself and make good use of his natural abilities and he'll be fine. He looks to share most of the minutes at the Point this season with Chris Battle either as the starter or off the bench.

Felts, Jermaine JR 6-2 180 lb Guard
A junior college transfer in his first year at Boiling Springs. Has a laser accurate jumpshot and a scorer's mentality. If he can extend his range to the 3 point arc, and perhaps drive a bit more he can become a big time scorer in this league. He and fellow newcomer Ike Jeffers would appear to be the obvious choices to replace Rob Woods' minutes at the 2 for us this season. Is a good passer and ballhandler as a shooting guard, and may have the opportunity to play a bit of point on rare occasions.

Giesen, Brandon JR 6'7 229 lb Forward
Another junior college transfer in his first year with us. Not really strong enough to play the 4, he is very athletic, however, and has good defensive instincts at the 3 which is where he will get most of his minutes for us. With some hard work he can develop into a very good defensive and rebounding wingman. He needs to work some on his jumpshot though to keep the defense honest. He does have the ability to get his man in the air, and is likely to draw some fouls, and is a very good free-throw shooter. Will probably be mostly playing for the scout team this year, but will get some opportunities to work his way into the rotation if he uses them well.

Gilchrist, Lawrence SR 6'3 219 lb Guard
The most athletic of our guards, Lawrence's career has been riddled with inconsistency. He has the ability to be a decent Point Guard but is going to have to work harder to get more than a few minutes a game most nights. He is a clutch free-throw shooter, however, and has more often than not been on the floor for us in late-game situations. Some of Lawrence's best games for us have been when the guys ahead of him are either injured or in foul trouble and he was forced to step up and do something. As a senior, he certainly has enough raw ability and experience with our system now to be a part of the rotation and contribute, but he's going to have to want it.

Jeffers, Ike JR 6'5 217 lb Guard/Forward
Another JUCO transfer playing his first season with the Bulldogs. Like Jermaine Felts has a deadly accurate jumpshot and a scorer's mentality. He also has decent defensive ability. Ike will be sharing minutes at the 2 with Felts, but most likely is going to get minutes at the 3 as well. Whether he starts or comes off the bench, he is being counted on to be one of the key players in our rotation, and someone we are going to be looking to for point production this season.

Kerr, Brandon SR 6'8 232 lb Forward
Brandon showed a lot of improvement last season as our starting 3 on most nights. His size makes him a difficult assignment for many of the wing players we see in conference play. Is quick enough to guard many of the smaller 3s, although sometimes struggles with the quicker ones. He is a good complement to Tony Evans and Ike Jeffers allowing us the latitude to go with matchups. Most nights Brandon grabs us a fair number of rebounds using his size and excellent positioning, and also understands and plays well in the Amoeba and often is found initiating or finishing the fast break. Mostly a role player in our offense, he will, however, punish the opposition for leaving him unguarded, and is an excellent passer when they don't. He moves well with or without the ball and has a quick release. He is also one of the best slashers on our team. He gives us consistent minutes on most nights. He is also big and smart enough to play the 4 occasionally when we have called on him to do so. He can be expected to be part of our rotation again this year.

Landrum, Benjamin 6'8 196 lb. JR Forward
A walk-on, Benjamin isn't strong enough to be much of a factor inside. He does possess great foot speed though and uses it well to get to loose rebounds when he is out of position, which he usually is. Has great hands though, and a nose for loose balls, which challenges some of our more talented big men in practice to not put the ball on the floor in the posts. He'll be primarily on the scout team

Moore, Donald 6'7 235 lb. JR Forward
Probably our best defensive rebounder over-all because of his excellent technique and effort. Also one of our best post defenders, and has lighting fast hands that make him very dangerous when we trap out of the Amoeba Zone. Sets a good post, and has can shoot hit a jumper well with accuracy out to 18 feet. Doesn't have the ball-handling ability to drive or shoot off the dribble, but we'd still like to see him use his ability to draw fouls in the post to score a little more. He understands his job as a role player on this team though, and uses his abilities well in that regard. His rebounding and defense guarantee him a spot in our big man rotation, and he may well be starting much of the time because of those attributes. An exceptionally hard worker, we seldom have to motivate him in practice, and he does a great job of pushing everyone else.

O'Conner, Josh "Godzilla" 6'10 286 lb SO Center
Was able to beat out Lyles of Presbyterian for Freshman of the Year in the conference because of his excellent play down the stretch. When Rob Woods called him out last year, it was like a light went on with the big guy and he was a force the rest of the season. Towards the end of the year he began hitting the boards harder, and playing better defensively as well. By season's end he clearly was no longer playing like a freshman. Offensively he's a real treat to watch most nights when we are able to get him the ball enough, and there's almost no such thing as too often. We need him to keep it going for us this season, and continue to improve defensively and on the boards, because, quite frankly, as Godzilla goes, so goes the team this year. He'll be a marked man in our offense this year, and we hope he is able to rise above it.

Sheals, Billy 6'7 221 lb SR Forward/Center
Because of his size, he's often overwhelmed a bit in the pivot at both ends, but he adapted well to playing a large number of his minutes last year at the 4. More limited offensively than Brown and O'Conner because of a limited skill set in the post, he does have a decent jumpshot from about 12-15 feet. He's also a decent free-throw shooter when he gets to the line. On any given night, we don't know exactly what we are going to get out of Billy. Some nights he goes to the boards with abandon at both ends of the court, and gets us 8 to 12 pts on putbacks and short jumpers. Other nights, he looks like a deer caught in lights. He'll be part of our rotation again, but the number of minutes he gets will depend upon him becoming more consistent in his production, especially rebounding, which we badly need.

Our starting line-up starting the season will be:

PG Battle
SG Felts
SF Kerr
PF Moore
C O'Conner

with Jeffers, Brown and Feeley playing significant minutes off the bench. Evans and Sheals will get playing time as well, and need to be productive with it. Over-all, I'm optimistic going into the season opener, other than the rebounding situation. Hopefully we'll have a great season. Season ticket sales are at an all-time high of 2300, I've been told. I want to see a sell-out before the season is over. Interest in the program on campus and in the community are at an all time high after last season's NCAA appearance. We need to keep building on it. Maybe eventually the administration will become interested in us as well.

Nov 16: North Carolina Central(0-0)@Gardner-Webb(0-0)

Postby CoachC » Sat Mar 30, 2013 10:54 am

Larry: Season opener, coach! As a player the opportunity to finally stop beating up on each other and go to work when the game counts was always exciting. What's it like as a coach?

Gary: Much the same, Larry. You can practice, and you can schedule exhibition games, but it's not til the games actually count that you can really start to get a feel for your team.

Larry: Indeed. There was a lot to love in that exhibition against Winston-Salem though, and it's created quite a bit of buzz for the team. 2900 in attendance tonight. Largest crowd at Porter arena since before I started playing here, I know. That's an indication of a program on the rise, I should think.

Gary: I hope so, Larry! We struggled at times at home last season, and it's important for us to have a nice crowd making noise behind us, preferably not boos. The crowd is nice, but there are still a couple thousand empty seats. I hope we can pack this place sometime before the season is over. In all fairness, although the attendance tonight is appreciated, I understand that some of it may have to do with the student newspaper erroneously reporting we were opening our season against North Carolina. Apparently they thought adding Central to the end of that was a bit too wordy.

Larry:(laughing)Perhaps! I do think most of them are here to see YOUR team though, and I don't blame them, there is a lot to like. What can you tell us about the Eagles?

Gary: Not a lot since we only were able to scout them in an exhibition game against a Div III team. They are now a provisionary DI independent, so at least the game counts for us in terms of RPI. We know they like to move the ball around the lot, and try to draw fouls to get to the line, where they appear to shoot freethrows fairly well. They'll press us occasionally looking to trap full court, and we've made our guards aware of that. On the half-court we expect they'll mostly play man-to-man.

Larry: Good luck coach! Tell the guys to win one for Larry "the Leaper". Hey, if Josh O'Conner can have a catchy nickname, so can I!

Gary: Thanks, Larry, and good luck calling the game. Incidentally, from what I can remember of your playing days, you could barely jump over your shoe tops. Your snoring on the team bus was legendary though.. Maybe you should go with Larry "the Sleeper"!

Our first half performance was pretty impressive. With them collapsing on Godzilla every time he got the ball, it left shots open for most everyone else, and most of the time they were scoring, especially Kerr and Feeley who punished them for constantly for leaving them open (and O'Conner still scored 10 pts). Balanced scoring saw us shoot 54.5% from the field in the first half. And incredibly we turned over the ball 0 times. Zero. That's a number I can live with! For once I can't tell them to take better care of the ball in the 2nd half!

Our defense was pretty good as well, turning them over 12 times on 6 steals, and holding them to 42.9% shooting.

On the downside, both Felts and Fetters picked up 2 personals each midway in the half, and Battle and Evans wound up playing the last 8 or 10 minutes at the 2.

The big concern in the first half is the same one we've had since practice began. Defensive rebounding. We were outrebounded (14-21,6-9) and that MUST improve and is the thing I spend most of the intermission yelling about. We were outscored 10-7 on 2nd chance points, and 10-8 on fast break points both a direct result of our lack of defensive rebounds.

Towards the end of the game our shooting pct. fell off 43.1 for the game as we began to empty the bench, but I was very happy with our offensive execution for most of the game. It's especially nice to be able to almost count our turnovers with my thumbs. a/to(11/3). The Amoeba Zone worked very well too, as we forced 21 turnovers by the Eagles with 10 steals. We were better on the boards in the 2nd half, but still not good enough on the defensive end (36/40, 15/12 for the game) and these guys are gonna get sick of the rebounding drills, but right now defensive rebounding is our most glaring weakness and one that will get us hurt against better teams.

Fortunately, I'm happy to say that Godzilla was not part of the problem and had a great game (14 pts, 10 rebs, 3 stls). Brown(6pts, 6rebs,1st,1bk in 19 minutes) and Moore(9pts,7rebs,1st in 25 minutes) did their jobs on the defensive boards as well for the most part. That leaves Sheals and the perimeter guys to point the fingers at.

No complaints about the work of our point guards. Battle and Feeley combined for 7 asts and just 1 turnover in 48 minutes, but combined for just one defensive rebound between them. Defensively they need to get in the numbers of their opposition a little better as their point guard burned us for 25 points on 15/25 shooting, although he did cough up the ball 10 times. no way would that kid play point for ME! I'd find SOMEBODY else somewhere to feed HIM the ball. We did a great job defensively on everyone else though and they shot just 39% from the field. Take away their point guards performance and they didn't have much of anything going on for them offensively.

Kerr and Evans combined for 18 points and did a great job of looking to score when they were left open. We seldom call their numbers on a set play, and if they can give us that kind of point production from the 3 letting the game come to them, we'll certainly take it. We do expect more rebounding from them though, especially Kerr.

We definitely have to have more than 28 minutes combined from Felts and Jeffers moving forward though. Felts struggled a bit in his debut (2/11 from the field and 3 fouls limiting him to 15 minutes) and Jeffries picked up 4 fouls in just 13 minutes, but was productive when on the floor chipping in 9 pts. Defensively they did a pretty good job, but need to learn to do it without fouling. We also need them both to chip in with their share of rebounds (just one rebound at each end of the floor between them).

Outside of the rebounding, and the foul situation at the 2 though, I was very happy with our effort in the season opener. It will get tougher from here, and we need to get tougher as well.

Final G-W 75 NC-Central 47.
