How old is KD when he arrives at the Mavs? Is he still at the peak of his form or is he on the downward?

Durant is currently 31 years old and on his last year of his contract. It may sound like I stole him but MKG is an amazing player, sure not to the extend of KD but you never get the full dollar when you sell someone like this. MKG is on a four year contract while KD might have bolted because he was having difficulties with their new coach. Darren Collison was also averaging 15ppg, 6apg and 5rpg so he's no slouch either.

January Player of the Month – Kevin Love, Minnesota Timberwolves – 33.5 points, 13.1 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.4 steals and 0.3 blocks per game.

January Rookie of the Month – Dustin Harris, Portland Trailblazers – 17.4 points, 8.2 rebounds, 0.9 assists, 0.4 steals and 0.3 blocks per game.

Harris has heaps of talent but I have never seen anyone with a worse attitude than him. He is the definition of a toxic player off the court, and I wouldn’t touch him with a 100 foot pole.

Our first game of the month is against the Thunder, and with Matt Brown injured with a strained calf Russell Westbrook took full advantage. The OKC PG had 34 points as we weren’t ever in the game, losing 103-86. MKG shot badly (3/12) but made up for it in other areas with 7 points, 11 rebounds, 8 assists and 4 blocks. He also held Kevin to 9/30 shooting for 32 points and 9 rebounds in the loss.

Dallas Mavericks 34-10

It’s a home and home against Milwaukee, first up in Wisconsin. Unfortunately, our inability to guard anyone has given us our first losing streak since the second and third games of the season, going down 117-103. Jonas Valanciunas was the best player on the court by far with 21 points and 16 rebounds while my old crush Thomas Cooper showed how good he can be with 23 points and 12 rebounds. KD only had 24 points as Matt Brown was back in the starting line-up but still not 100%, nabbing 13 points and 9 assists.

Dallas Mavericks 34-11

It’s back to Dallas and back to our winning ways as we rout the Bucks 109-90 and snapping our small losing streak. Kevin Durant was back to his best with 40 points while Brad Beal was also excellent with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Jonas Valanciunas and Thomas Cooper combined for 25 points and 30 rebounds but the team shot 36% from the field.

Dallas Mavericks 35-11

Hmm, that’s different. We lose at home, to Houston 99-83 after an atrocious first half that saw us down by 25 points. James Harden was a man on a mission with 38 points as our main man only had 19 points on 6/22 shooting. I’m just going to chalk this up to a bad night.

Dallas Mavericks 35-12

We head to Brooklyn for the next game and get out to a whopping 19 point lead. Unfortunately for us the Nets got back to a one point lead with 35 seconds to go. Fortunately for us we had Marcus Thornton on the court who caught the ball at the top, took two dribbles and sank the two pointer which gave us the lead and win, 91-90. Thornton only shot 3/10 but we only needed that one to seal it for us. Andre Drummond had 26 points and Kevin Durant only put in 23 points, but added 9 rebounds and 5 blocks. Blake Griffin was the Nets’ best with 12 points, 14 rebounds and 7 assists as they ran out of steam after their big comeback.

Dallas Mavericks 36-12

The next night we got back to our punishing best, knocking over the terrible Suns 128-85 and it was easier than the score shows. Matt Brown had 10 points, 12 assists and 8 rebounds while Kevin Durant had 30 points in 31 minutes. In fact, every Dallas player scored at least two points. Jared Arenas top scored for Phoenix with 20 points but they have Ryan Garris and Hillar Petrauskas rotting on the bench which is just plain dumb.

Dallas Mavericks 37-12

It’s a three pronged attack as we take care of Philadelphia 119-110. Kevin Durant went for 28 points, Andre Drummond had 24 points and 16 rebounds and surprisingly Matt Brown had 20 points and 17 assists as we are starting to rely on him more and more. Andre Owens had 24 points and 8 rebounds for the losers and I know I say this everytime but they are wasting Gabe White on the bench. Luckily for him it’s his last year on his contract so he can go somewhere that will start him.

Dallas Mavericks 38-12

Grr, we lose again to a team we shouldn’t as we go down to the Lakers 115-112 in a game we should have won. Joe Holmes had 29 points while Jeff Cunningham put up 12 points, 17 rebounds and 5 blocks in the win. Brad Beal had 25 points in the loss but I we want to be taken seriously as a championship contender we can’t be losing games like this.

Dallas Mavericks 38-13

Our last game before the All Star break is a shellacking, unfortunately not by us. The Clippers down us 115-94 as we just weren’t in the game. Stefan Nitschke had 27 points in the win while Cory Hackworth had 20 points and 13 rebounds. Kevin Durant was our best with 30 points but we just couldn’t stop them scoring.

Dallas Mavericks 38-14

We didn’t have anyone in either the Slam Dunk Contest or the Long Distance Shootout. Brian Jenkins from OKC won a close Dunk Comp as Cleveland’s Paul Bickerstaf well and truly won the first round but couldn’t back it up in the final. Houston’s Jay Warren was the worst of the finalists in the first round but stepped it up and hit 19 shots to win the title, beating out the Lakers’ Joe Holmes and Orlando’s Klay Thompson.

I always love watching the rookie/sophomore game because there is never any defence played so there are ridiculous scoring numbers. Take the second quarter of this year’s bonanza, where the second year guys outscored the rookies 52-41, unfortunately they lost the game 142-129. Doug Fisher was named MVP of the game with a fantastic triple double with 15 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds as the first year players shot 63% from the field. Carl Farmer had 22 points and 8 rebounds while Darcel Settles had 22 points and 9 assists. #1 draft pick John Nemitz had 20 points and 15 rebounds off the bench. For the losers Sean Morris put up 26 points while our own Matt Brown showed how good he is with 23 points and 12 assists before fouling out. Raul Lopez didn’t play because he has been named to the East’s All Star team.

The Mavs had three All Stars playing which was exciting, even MKG got a nod on the bench. What made it even better was that the West demolished the East 153-134 in a very one sided affair. James Harden was named All Star MVP with 21 points, 9 assists and 6 rebounds as the West had eight players in double figures. Kevin Durant and Andre Drummond both started, with KD having 21 points while Andre Drummond only playing 14 minutes to let the others have a go. Brad Beal was our other All Star with 13 points off the bench. John Johnson was the best for the East with 30 points while Blake Griffin had 14 points and 12 rebounds off the bench.

Eastern Conference All Star Starters
Steph Curry, New York Knicks
Klay Thompson, Orlando Magic
Paul George, Orlando Magic
Anthony Davis, New Orleans Hornets
Vitaly Ekomov, Philadelphia 76ers

Team with most All Stars – Orlando and New York with two. There were 10 teams represented in the East.

Western Conference All Star Starters
Russell Westbrook, Oklahoma City Thunder
James Harden, Houston Rockets
Kevin Durant, Dallas Mavericks
Kevin Love, Minnesota Timberwolves
Andre Drummond, Dallas Mavericks

Team with most All Stars – Dallas with three. There were seven teams represented in the West.

With only a few days left until the trade deadline the deals are starting to come in and I have a feeling there is going to be some big names dealt.

Utah trade:
PF Lynn McMillian
2021 2nd round pick

Golden State trade:
SG Murman Andronikov

Winner – Utah. What a steal by the Jazz here. They weren’t really using McMillian so getting someone of Murman’s talent is game changing. He slots right into the SG position and will give the Jazz an extra boost come playoff time.

Minnesota trade:
SG Iman Shumpert

Cleveland trade:
SG Tyreke Evans
2021 2nd round pick

Winner – Cleveland. For some reason the Cavs have Shumpert coming off the bench while he should be starting next to Kyrie Irving. Evans does have an expiring contract, giving them plenty of money to work with this off-season.

Houston trade:
PF Ryan Anderson

Portland trade:
SG Marshon Brooks
2021 2nd round pick

Winner – Portland. Brooks is a run of the mill SG while Anderson is now their starting PF who will help out immensely. Strange deal by Houston.

Hmm, I thought there would be more trades but I guess either everyone is happy or they couldn’t get deals done.

Our first game back from the All Star break is a doozy. Not because of the score, that was a blowout of the Clippers 115-87, but because Kevin Durant put up 52 points and 9 rebounds in the win. Amazing. Brad Beal was the other Mavericks player to get into double figures with 19 points but I guess when a player gets past the half century mark there isn’t much else to go around. What makes then more impressive is that Durant went 18/28 from the field and 11/16 from three point land. On the other side, Christopher de Castro didn’t have such a good day, with 17 points on 7/24 shooting.

Dallas Mavericks 39-14

Kevin Durant continues his fine form in our 109-102 come from behind victory over Atlanta with 37 points and 10 rebounds. We got outscored 29-19 in the third term but raced back in the last to outscore the Hawks 29-15 to win the game by seven. Andre Drummond had 21 points and 10 rebounds while Matt Brown put up 15 points and 11 assists. Ron Winston is getting plenty of minutes which is a God-send for him, tonight putting up 26 points in the loss.

Dallas Mavericks 40-14

I remember saying when he was traded from Indiana and before that when he was drafted that Ron Winston had all the skills to be a great SG in the league. Well, in only his third year he is doing just that. For the season Winston is averaging 19.4 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 1.7 steals and 0.4 blocks per game with quite a bit more growing to do. I hope he gets there, I really like this kid.

It was Brad Beal’s turn to be the star in our 113-96 win over New York as our great SG had 24 points and 8 rebounds in the win. Jevin Lindeman had 11 points and 5 assists in only 11 minutes off the bench also helped out. Steph Curry had 21 points but had eight turnovers and needed 21 shots to get those points.

Dallas Mavericks 41-14

Toronto’s big three all had great games, with Jeremy Lin having 18 points and 19 assists, Paul Orvis stacking up 25 points, 9 rebounds and 6 blocks and Jake Chase scoring 23 points but it wasn’t enough as we stomp the Raptors in Canada 114-103. Kevin Durant had 30 points and 11 rebounds but it was Matt Brown with 24 points and 11 assists and Marcus Thornton who had 16 points in all of seven minutes, going 5/9 from the field and 4/6 from three that won the game for us.

Dallas Mavericks 42-14

That’s five wins in a row as we obliterate the Lakers 126-89 as Kevin Durant went off again, this time scoring 46 points and grabbing 8 rebounds. Matt Brown had 10 points, 11 assists and 7 rebounds which isn’t too shabby. Jeff Cunningham was the best for LA with 23 points and 9 rebounds but they shot 34% from the field.

Dallas Mavericks 43-14

We always seem to play OKC in the last game of the month, and this time we got our revenge for last month with a 104-90 victory at home. KD and Brad Beal combined for 66 points while Matt Brown shot 4/18 from the field but was so close to a triple double with 14 points, 12 assists and 9 rebounds. MKG had an up and down night with 8 points, 9 rebounds and 8 assists but shot 3/13, with Russell Westbrook again having to pick up the slack with 32 points and 8 assists.

Dallas Mavericks 44-14

With another great month we are only one game behind the 45-13 Thunder, however Minnesota are right on our tails with a 43-14 record. Sacramento have got into double digit wins with a 13-46 record but they are still last in the conference.

New Orleans are leading the way in the East with a 46-13 record, with Detroit right behind them at 44-16. Washington are so close to 10 wins with 9-52.

Third round of NBA Draft Prospects (previous rank in brackets)
1. (1) SG Varlam Chavchavadze (Estonia), 18 years old, 6’2”, 197lbs
2. (3) PG DeShaun Worley (Prairie View), Freshman, 6’2”, 191lbs
3. (5) PF Shannon Barker (Kent State), Freshman, 6’8”, 216lbs
4. (NR) SG Lamont Nelson (Western Kentucky), Sophomore, 6’3”, 208lbs
5. (2) SF JD Lawson (USC), Freshman, 6’4”, 216lbs

Thoughts – Lawson has dropped because of sloppy play while Barker’s play lately has been outstanding. I’m going on record that this is the Chav-Chav and Worley draft, and those two should be picked #1-2.

February Player of the Month – Kevin Durant, Dallas Mavericks – 31.8 points, 7.2 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 0.6 steals and 1.4 blocks per game.

February Rookie of the Month – Dustin Harris, Portland Trailblazers – 17.2 points, 8.6 rebounds, 0.5 assists, 0.6 steals and 1.0 block per game.

It’s great to see one of my players get named Player of the Month, I think it’s the first time that has ever happened. What is even more surprising is Dustin Harris’ game against Cleveland where he exploded for 45 points and 15 rebounds as they beat the Cavs.

Our first game of March is a pretty simple 97-89 win over Miami. I say pretty simple because even though the score was eight points we were in control for most of the game. Kevin Durant had 30 points but it was the Andre Drummond/Eryk Charnowski battle at centre which was the most fun. AD had 8 points, 15 rebounds and 3 blocks while Eryk took it to him with 13 points, 16 rebounds and 7 blocks to win that battle. I’m really intrigued by Marco Barker who is finally starting after four years behind Ty Lawson and Kyrie Irving in Charlotte and Cleveland. Barker this season is averaging 11 points and 7 assists a game and at only 25 years old still has some room to grow. Tonight he had 14 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists. Oh, did I say that he is 6’6”? He is 6’6”.

Dallas Mavericks 45-14

We got out to a 29-18 first quarter lead and cruised from there, winning 120-97 against Denver. Kevin Durant had 27 points and 9 rebounds while Andre Drummond didn’t like being beaten by Charnowski last game and torched LaMarcus Aldridge with 25 points and 9 rebounds. Matt Brown and Jevin Lindeman combined for 18 points, 20 assists and 8 rebounds which is great PG work to me. Chris Drexler had a night to forget with 16 points and 11 rebounds but went 6/17 from the field. Alex Crawford was the top scorer for the Nuggets with 24 points.

Dallas Mavericks 46-14

Kevin Durant had 41 points and 13 rebounds while Brad Beal put up 28 points and 9 rebounds but we still lose, going down 116-111 against Utah. We shot 49% from the field compared to the Jazz’s 43% which is disappointing. Mark Lewis had 16 points, 13 rebounds, 6 blocks and 4 steals but it was Murman Andronikov who won it for them with 24 points in 29 minutes off the bench. Urgh, what a wasted game as we had a 47 point first quarter only to give up a 32-19 last term to go down by five.

Dallas Mavericks 46-15

The New Orleans vs. Nevada game made me feel a little better as the Hornets absolutely humiliated the Neon, getting out to an amazing 57 point lead to win the game 151-97. The Hornets shot 68% from the field and 71% from three point land, led by Bill Gearhart’s 12/13 night for 33 points. No New Orleans player played more than 29 minutes. The Neon shot 39% from the field and I’m sure they will be happy to get to the next game.

But the next game is against us, and we get grumpy after losing such a winnable game against Utah. It wasn’t a 50 point win but it was very, very easy as we take care of the game 120-101. Kevin Durant had 36 points, Andre Drummond had 20 points and 14 assists, Matt Brown put up 6 points, 15 assists and 8 rebounds but it was Jevin Lindeman who was the man with 11 assists in only 14 minutes. If he played Matt Brown’s minutes he would have had 26 assists. Bret Davis was the best for the Neon with 25 points and it’s great to see him getting the starting gig. I want to see what this kid can do.

Dallas Mavericks 47-15

In something that is becoming routine, Kevin Durant had 40 points and 9 rebounds in our 112-83 win over Brooklyn. Harrison Barnes had 17 points and 5 rebounds while Matt Brown is becoming one of the best pure point guards in the entire league with 8 points and 13 assists, while only turning the ball over three times. I will be holding onto him for a long, long time. Blake Griffin is injured for the Nets so they didn’t have much firepower, with Donte Rock being the best with 15 points on 6/22 shooting.

Dallas Mavericks 48-15

Whenever Kyrie Irving goes off it’s hard to get a win against the Cavs and that’s exactly what he did. He went 16/30 from the field for 43 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists as Cleveland nabs the 107-99 win. Brennan Weber backed him up with 14 points and 16 rebounds. Kevin Durant had a tough night with 23 points and 9 rebounds on 7/19 shooting with Meyers Leonard popping his head up for 10 points in 10 minutes off the bench.

Dallas Mavericks 48-16

We get our revenge against the Cavs as it was Brad Beal taking the lead with 29 points in a 121-109 victory. Matt Brown only shot four shots but his numbers were fantastic with 9 points, 17 assists and 7 rebounds. He also held Kyrie Irving to 33 points. That might not sound good but Irving went 12/35 from the field and 8/20 from three. Now that sounds better.

Dallas Mavericks 49-16

The Sonics are further ahead of the Neon in their development and have some decent players like Carl Farmer (23 points, 9 rebounds) and Ross Lampley (16 points, 5 assists) but they don’t have the polish of a team who gel together well like ours, as we won 96-85. Andre Drummond had 22 points and 13 rebounds while Matt Brown put up 20 points, 11 assists and 8 rebounds and I’m sure he will get a triple double sooner rather than later.

Dallas Mavericks 50-16

Woo, 50 wins!

This is my ninth season as a general manager and six of those seasons I have notched a 50 win season, with another 49 win season with Memphis. Pretty good I reckon.

The Celtics have been waiting for next season probably since the start of this season, sitting at 18-46. They have Raul Lopez but I feel like if your starting C is Ben Chambers you’re not going anywhere. Lopez went 13/34 from the field for 29 points while our SF Kevin Durant put up 40 points and 9 rebounds as we won 127-98. Andre Drummond and Harrison Barnes combined for 46 points and 21 rebounds to neutralize Boston’s big men.

Dallas Mavericks 51-16

If I was to say that in our 132-105 win over Indiana that Matt Brown put up his first triple double (17 points, 13 assists and 10 rebounds) that he wouldn’t be named Player of the Game, would you believe me? Well it happened as Kevin Durant went 19/30 for 51 points to take the award. After all this waiting for Matt Brown’s first triple double he got overshadowed by KD. Jim Turner top scored for the Pacers with 28 points while Alexander Verhaeren had 16 assists in the loss.

Dallas Mavericks 52-16

Our last game of the month gives us another five game winning streak, overcoming a slow start to take care of Minnesota 101-92. Kevin Durant had 37 points and 10 rebounds while Matt Brown was again so close to a triple double with 8 points, 10 rebounds and 9 assists. It was a slog as we got down by double digits in the second term. Damian Lillard needed 29 shots to get 28 points, even shooting 22 three point shots. Kevin Love was also inefficient with 18 points and 19 rebounds but went 7/23 and had six turnovers.

Dallas Mavericks 53-16

With a great March we have the outright lead in the West, with Utah right behind us at 52-19. The Thunder don’t really miss Durant as they are the other 50 win team with a 52-20 record. Sacramento are sitting on the bottom at 14-59.

In the East it looks like the Hornets are going to get home court advantage throughout the playoffs unless something drastic happens at 58-14, with Detroit (53-21), Toronto (51-25) and New York (50-25) the other 50 win teams. Washington went 4-10 in the month and are still last at 13-62.

Last round of NBA Draft Prospects (previous rank in brackets)
1. (5) SG JD Lawson (USC), Freshman, 6’4”, 216lbs
2. (2) PG DeShaun Worley (Prairie View), Freshman, 6’2”, 191lbs
3. (1) SG Varlam Chavchavadze (Estonia), 18 years old, 6’2”, 197lbs
4. (NR) SG Michael Williams (Fresno State), Freshman, 6’8”, 196lbs
5. (NR) SF Josh Jackson (Massachusetts), Junior, 6’3”, 190lbs

Thoughts – Chav-chav is injured so his stock has dropped to third but should still be number one. Surprisingly Worley hasn’t dropped because usually small school player drop because of their soft schedule but this isn’t the case. If you didn’t know that this was a guard heavy draft just look at that top five, and even number six is SG Lamont Nelson.

March Player of the Month – Kevin Durant, Dallas Mavericks – 33.6 points, 7.9 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.3 blocks per game.

March Rookie of the Month – Dustin Harris, Portland Trailblazers – 18.3 points, 7.0 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 0.4 steals and 0.4 blocks per game.

With only 13 games to go and we need to win as many games as possible to get the top spot in the West because even though we are 22-11 away we are even better at 31-5 at home.

Great start to the final month with a 108-74 win over Golden State with Kevin Durant exploding for 35 points and 12 rebounds while Harrison Barnes was the second best player on the court with 22 points and 12 rebounds. There were only two Warriors in double figures, Lynn McMillian with 18points and Marquis Brown with 14 points.

Dallas Mavericks 54-16

Our next game was at home against Memphis and we absolutely annihilated them, with our lowest scoring quarter being the last with 30 with a final score of 143-109. The team shot 60% from the field with Kevin Durant putting up 37 points and 10 rebounds, with Meyers Leonard being the best off the bench with 14 points in only nine minutes. Even Maverick player scored at least once. Kenneth Faried was the best for the Grizzlies with 18 points and 10 rebounds but they shot 43% and just couldn’t stop us.

Dallas Mavericks 55-16

If we want to win the championship we have to go through New Orleans and we crumbled under the pressure. We got down 43-29 at the half and just couldn’t peg it back, losing 99-87. Anthony Davis was back to his amazing best with 15 points, 17 rebounds and 8 blocks as Kevin Durant went down with back spasms in the last quarter. Matt Brown was close to a triple double, notching 7 points, 13 assists and 10 rebounds. Yep, the old double double the hard way.

Dallas Mavericks 55-17

Kevin Durant will be down for about two weeks so Jaymes and I decided to be really easy with him until the playoffs, we don’t want him to come back to early and do more damage.

Without KD we just didn’t have the firepower to run with Minnesota, as the Wolves blasted us 126-99. Kevin Love had 28 points, with his running mate Damian Lillard nearly matching him with 27 points. Our best was Harrison Barnes back at his natural position of SF with 19 points with Meyers Leonard starting at PF but we just couldn’t keep up. Joakim Noah had 11 rebounds off the bench.

Dallas Mavericks 55-18

We get back to our winning ways with Brad Beal leading the way with 30 points and 12 rebounds as we beat up Miami 116-101. Matt Brown had 16 points, 14 assists and 7 rebounds but couldn’t stop Marco Barker going off for 33 points in the loss.

Dallas Mavericks 56-18

Kendall Marshall had 20 points and 16 assists in the Lakers’ 109-91 victory but after only three minutes Andre Drummond went down with a suspected broken hand. We just couldn’t recover, especially with Kevin Durant still not 100%, not even 90%. Joakim Noah tried his best with 10 rebounds but Jeff Cunningham cut him to pieces, going 11/14 for 22 points and 5 blocks.

Dallas Mavericks 56-19

Damn, the doctors told me that Andre has broken his shooting hand, keeping him out of the roster for at least two months. DAMMIT. There goes our championship contender crown, and I can only hope that we can at least win the first round. Meyers Leonard has taken his spot in the starting line-up.

Brad Beal decided that wallowing in the despair of AD’s injury wasn’t the right thing to do and came out gunning against Golden State. He hit 13/22 shots on his way to 33 points and 8 rebounds, with KD and Harrison Barnes combining for 49 points as well. Jimmy Forrest had 23 points on 9/11 shooting on Meyers with Cederic Mapp top scoring for the Warriors with 27 points. Good start.

Dallas Mavericks 57-19

The next night we travelled to Houston and won again, riding a 39-22 last quarter to snatch the victory 128-121. Kevin Durant had 35 points while Matt Brown put up 22 points and 13 assists. Even though the Rockets’ top scorer was Jay Warren with only 18 points they had ten players with seven points or more which made up the rest.

Dallas Mavericks 58-19

That’s three wins in a row after AD’s injury as we bombed the Blazers 119-87 as Kevin Durant put up 29 points as he is back to 100%. Joakim Noah is now starting and went 6/6 from the field for 12 points, 7 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 blocks which is what we can hope for every night. Dustin Harris had 20 points on 9/12 shooting while Brandon Jennings shot badly (5/16) but was close to a triple double with 12 points, 10 assists and 9 rebounds. When we come up against an elite centre we are going to be in trouble because neither Noah nor Leonard will be able to defend them.

Dallas Mavericks 59-19

Luckily for us DeMarcus Cousins is still injured as we obliterate the Kings 145-98 as we shoot 57% from the field. Kevin Durant put up 45 points with Harrison Barnes and Brad Beal both scoring 23 points. Matt Brown had 10 points and 15 assists while Derrick Woodward had a ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ performance with 12 points and 4 rebounds in 15 minutes before fouling out. Talk about doing your business quickly. Joe Abney scored the most for Sacramento with 26 points but went 10/26 from the field and 6/17 from three to negate his point total.

Dallas Mavericks 60-19

With three games to go we are 1.5 games ahead of Utah for the top spot, so if we can win the first two we should be able to give the bench guys a go in the last.

Game one is a success as we breeze past the Blazers 113-75 and I feel like my rivalry with Brandon Jennings is over as it seems to be heavily in favour of the Mavericks. Brad Beal had 22 points in the win with Meyers Leonard having 10 points and 5 rebounds off the bench. Jennings was the best for the Blazers with 20 points but he was negated by Jan Vesley’s 0/9 night and Earl Oliver’s eight turnovers.

Dallas Mavericks 61-19

The Thunder get their revenge on us for the last game, as Russell Westbrook had 28 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists but more importantly MKG kept Kevin Durant to a 6/28 shooting night for only 19 points. Brad Beal took up the slack with 32 points and 10 rebounds but we shot 34% from the field which doomed us.

Dallas Mavericks 61-20

With one game to go we are only one game ahead of the Jazz, and they play the terrible Kings. Unfortunately for us we lost the season series against Utah so if we lose and they win they will get the top spot so we are going to have to keep our starters out there.

Kevin Durant had 42 points and 9 rebounds as he made sure that we got that top spot, beating Charlotte 105-87. Harrison Barnes was also great with 21 points and 12 rebounds, making up for Matt Brown’s 2/14 night. Ty Lawson helped on some more pain for Brown, scoring 27 points in the loss. Utah unsurprisingly won against Sacramento so having the starters out there was a good idea.

Dallas Mavericks 62-20

Western Conference Final Standings
1 – Dallas Mavericks – 62-20 (.756)
2 – Utah Jazz – 61-21 (.744)
3 – Oklahoma City Thunder – 57-25 (.695)
4 – Minnesota Timberwolves – 56-26 (.683)
5 – Houston Rockets – 51-31 (.622)
6 – Denver Nuggets – 46-36 (.561)
7 – San Antonio Spurs – 41-41 (.500)
8 – Milwaukee Bucks – 41-41 (.500)
Last – Sacramento Kings – 15-67 (.183)

No team in the Pacific division made it into the playoffs, with the Clippers being the best at 34-48, seven games behind Milwaukee. With the expansion of the league to 32 teams each conference is now split into four divisions and the league has done away with each division leader being in the playoffs and just put in the best eight teams.

Eastern Conference Final Standings
1 – New Orleans Hornets – 65-17 (.793)
2 – Detroit Pistons – 60-22 (.732)
3 – New York Knicks – 56-26 (.683)
4 – Atlanta Hawks – 55-27 (.671)
5 – Toronto Raptors – 52-30 (.634)
6 – Orlando Magic – 51-31 (.622)
7 – Philadelphia 76ers – 44-38 (.537)
8 – Miami Heat – 41-41 (.500)
Last – Washington Wizards – 13-69 (.159)

Six teams over 50 wins this season for the East as New Orleans are the overwhelming favourites to win it all but look for a few upsets in the early rounds.

Staff Reports

BIG WINS IN BIG D

The Dallas Mavericks are prepping themselves for hopefully a long playoff campaign and a lot of the credit goes to new General Manager Yaxley MacMillan, who has turned this club from a perennial cellar dweller to the current number one seed in the Western Conference. To explain this rise in fame, we must go back to the past.

Before MacMillan arrived in Texas the Mavericks were 203-334 (winning percentage of .378) with six straight bottom placed divisional ‘titles’. The last time they were in the playoffs was in 2012, winning 45 games and making it into the second round before being bounced. After that the team had six seasons of over 50 losses, causing four coaches to come and go. They didn’t have many accolades either, with only Brandon Jennings winning anything of note, being named All Star MVP in 2015 and All NBA third team in 2017. Other than that, nothing to put their hat on. They have also had numerous high draft picks that equated to nothing more than average players, with Matthew Edney (#7, 2014), Pat Archie (#8, 2015), Lorec Balosak (#5, 2017), Nathan Howard (#13, 2017) all failing to fire while only now is #8 pick in the 2018 draft Jevin Lindeman starting to grow, and that won’t be anything more than a very good bench point guard.

That all changed when MacMillan arrived from his problematic tenure with the Memphis Grizzlies. After the Grizzlies went 25-57 in 2015 he turned the team around, winning 24 more games on their way to a 49-33 record before being eliminated in the first round of the playoffs. The two seasons after that they had a combined 118-48 record while getting to the Western Conference Finals but he was unceremoniously dumped from the team because of his not so private clashes with owner Mike Hershey. That friction didn’t deter Dallas owner Mike English of quickly hiring him. Mr English’s patience did falter slightly when stalwart and fan favourite Brandon Jennings was quickly traded to Portland for LaMarcus Aldridge and the number seven pick in the 2019 draft, which eventually became Brandon Anderer to go along with #6 pick Matt Brown. MacMillan had a plan.

After an extremely sluggish start to the 2019 season where the team had slipped to a 7-18 record his temper was starting to show. A loss to the expansion Nevada Neon tipped him over the line, causing MacMillan to purge the team and start again with a squad composed entirely on expiring contracts, dealing away prize recruits like Joe Abney, LaMarcus Aldridge and Nicolas Batum in what some Dallas fans called “removing the rot” as these players were not playing “hard Dallas basketball.” In return they got high motor players like now captain Harrison Barnes, Marcus Thornton, Bismack Biyombo and Darren Collison, all new starters. This new line-up might not have set the world on fire, but they did end up only one game outside the playoffs which was a great return given the team’s horrific start.

The off season is where MacMillan really stepped up. Lady Luck had some say in it, going from the ninth best odds in the draft lottery to nabbing the third pick. The Mavericks selected power forward Marcus Randle who didn’t see any court time in the NBA because of his raw play but he has amazing upside and more importantly a gym rat mentality to work ethic. He will play a big part in the team’s future. However, it was the free agency period that brought this team from the brink. Using his shrewd managing skills, MacMillan whittled down a $94 million salary to a shade under $12 million, giving the team $46 million in cap to spend on free agents.

With that money he got an All NBA second team player and two All NBA third team players, as well as two All Defence first teamers and a second teamer. The city of Dallas turned 180 degrees in a few days as the Mavericks somehow snagged Andre Drummond, Bradley Beal and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. The era of a new Big Three was touted by the media. The team also nabbed quality players like Harrison Barnes, Patrick Patterson and Darren Collison. This team was geared towards a championship and the city knew it. Season memberships rose astronomically, with the entire top section being bought by title hungry fans. Local celebrities like Owen and Luke Wilson, Tommy Lee Jones, Norah Jones, Kelly Clarkson and the Dixie Chicks were getting onboard with a advertising campaign that was plastered everywhere in Texas. They knew something was coming.

After a month it wasn’t all roses and champagne like the pre-game parties. The team was 4-4 and sitting at the bottom end of the playoffs. Even though the next month they were sitting third in the West a 17-7 there were still grumblings that this team may be a good regular season team but it could never compete for a championship. That all changed at the start of January.

The Dallas Mavericks may have made the biggest trade in league history, right up there with the Golden State/Boston trade where the Celtics somehow stole not only Robert Parish but also Kevin McHale in 1980. The Mavericks traded their starting SF and PG in Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and Darren Collison for three time MVP Kevin Durant. Not only did they get the best scorer in the league, they removed Collison from the starting point guard position, giving phenom Matt Brown the room to grow into a stellar ball distributor. The Thunder were worried that Durant would bolt during free agency next season and wanted to get something instead of seeing him walk. The effect on the Mavericks was instant.

After the trade the team went 16-1, and even though Durant’s scoring was down Matt Brown’s output was extraordinary. In those seventeen games where he started, the second year player averaged 10 points, 12 assists and 4 rebounds a game. A new elite point guard had arrived. In the end the team finished at 62-20, a 44-12 record with Durant on the team good enough to take the first seed in the playoffs for the Western Conference.

However, tragedy struck only eight games out from the playoffs. The team’s rock, their heart in Andre Drummond suffered a broken hand that will keep him out of most, but probably all of the playoffs. This setback will hurt no doubt, but the team is solid and can withstand the injury with the combination of bench sparks Joakim Noah and Meyers Leonard. Leonard in particular will have to step up because he has complained about playing time throughout the season, so here is his chance to prove himself. Thanks to Kevin Durant, Brad Beal, Matt Brown, Harrison Barnes and the rest of the squad, this team is ready for the playoffs and the city is 1000% behind them. This season has changed the culture of Dallas basketball. From perennial whipping boys to championship contenders, it all comes down to the post season. Can Dallas withstand Andre’s broken hand? How will Matt Brown handle the post season pressure? And more pressing, how can anyone beat the New Orleans juggernaut? In time, these questions will be answered but for now, there is only one thing to say...

Nice summary. BTW, how did Marcus Randle do in the Development League? Still looking like a future star?

Marcus Randle's season with the Lions -
48 games (48 starts), 33.6 minutes, 15.2 points (.432 FG, .741 FT, .330 3P), 7.4 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.1 steals and 0.1 blocks.

He didn't set the world on fire but he still looks like he will eventually set the world on fire. Right now I would say that he will take the starting PF spot from Harrison Barnes next season. He has the potential to become a top 3-5 defender and his scoring and rebounding numbers are excellent as well. What makes him so drool worthy is that his work ethic is amazing, and his loyalty is high and greed is low. He will become a stretch four which will help out KD who won't have to worry about him clogging the lane.

2021 NBA Playoffs

Eastern Conference
#1 New Orleans vs. #8 Miami
#2 Detroit vs. #7 Philadelphia
#3 New York vs. #6 Orlando
#4 Atlanta vs. #5 Toronto

Western Conference
#1 Dallas vs. #8 Milwaukee
#2 Utah vs. #7 San Antonio
#3 Oklahoma City vs. #6 Denver
#4 Minnesota vs. #5 Houston

We won the season series 3-1 against the Bucks but Jonas Valanciunas might give us problems throughout the series.

Western Conference First Round – Milwaukee vs. Dallas

Point Guard
Daryl Iacona vs. Matt Brown
12.9 points, 6.3 assists, 3.7 rebounds vs. 9.2 points, 9.1 assists, 3.9 rebounds
The revelation of the Mavericks’ team, Brown has brought a court savvy that hasn’t been seen in a long time. Iacona will trouble him with his outstanding defence, but look for Brown to average double figure assists in this series.

Winner - Dallas

Shooting Guard
Sean Gilmore vs. Brad Beal
11.7 points, 2.3 assists, 4.9 rebounds vs. 19.5 points, 2.0 assists, 7.3 rebounds

Even though Gilmore is three inches taller than Beal the Dallas two guard is a great player. Like, real great. Not only is Beal a fantastic scorer he is a great rebounder for his position and size.

Winner - Dallas

Small Forward
Jamal Howell vs. Kevin Durant
16.1 points, 1.6 assists, 5.2 rebounds vs. 30.6 points, 1.8 assists, 7.6 rebounds

Howell is the best player for this Milwaukee side (equal with JV) but he just isn’t in the same stratosphere as Durant. KD is an amazing scorer and has scored 50 points or more 17 times since 2012. Good luck Howell.

Winner - Dallas

Power Forward
Thomas Cooper vs. Harrison Barnes
13.1 points, 1.2 assists, 6.4 rebounds vs. 13.7 points, 1.6 assists, 6.7 rebounds

Even though Cooper has only blocked one shot in eight seasons he is still a great player. Sure he isn’t the amazing player he could have been on draft night but he is a very solid two way baller. Barnes has been a nice surprise for Dallas playing at PF, but will have his work cut out for him here.

Winner - Milwaukee

Centre
Jonas Valanciunas vs. Patrick Patterson
13.3 points, 1.5 assists, 9.2 rebounds vs. 2.9 points, 0.3 assists, 1.7 rebounds

For some reason coach Jaymes Bekale has decided to start Patrick Patterson at C instead of either Joakim Noah or Meyers Leonard but the man has his way. Valanciunas is going to tear apart whoever he plays against because of the absence of Andre Drummond and look for big numbers here.

Winner - Milwaukee

Bench
John Henson, Ike Matthews, Mike Lloyd vs. Marcus Thornton, Meyers Leonard, Joakim Noah

Sure Henson, Matthews and Lloyd are serviceable players but the bench of the Mavericks have a formidable line-up. Thornton is a pure scorer, Leonard should be starting while Noah can grab rebounds and defend even though he is 35 years old.

Winner – Milwaukee

Prediction – Dallas in five. The Bucks may steal a game at home but the Mavs are just too strong.

The crowd here in Dallas have pretty much given us this series, they just want to watch us train and get ready for the second round. Even though it’s nice to have such confidence it is really dangerous for the team to buy into this mindset. Kevin Durant had other ideas with 32 points and 9 rebounds while Matt Brown put up 16 points, 11 assists and 8 rebounds as we only just get past the Bucks 97-92 to take first blood. Patrick Patterson was fantastic, playing 33 minutes and held Jonas Valanciunas to only 5 points and 8 rebounds on 2/9 shooting. If he can keep that up we will go a long way. Darryl Iacona and Sean Gilmore combined for 43 points, 13 assists and 13 rebounds as Jamal Howell was held to only 15 points.

Dallas leads 1-0

In Minnesota’s 120-105 win over Houston Kevin Love scored the most points in a playoff game ever. Love played 39 minutes, shot 21/34 from the field, 5/7 from three and 17/18 from the line for 64 points and 12 rebounds. This total eclipses Michael Jordan’s 63 points in 1986.

In game two Thomas Cooper and Jonas Valanciunas combined for 34 points and 25 rebounds while Mike Lloyd had 18 points in 18 minutes for the Bucks but no-one could contain Kevin Durant in our 118-99 win. Our scoring leader had 34 points and 17 rebounds as he dominated from the opening tip. Brad Beal helped out with 23 points while Matt Brown dished out 13 assists. Great start to the series and now onto Milwaukee.

Dallas leads 2-0

Travelling into Milwaukee there were billboards and signs everywhere hyping these two home games. There were people lining up to buy tickets three hours ahead of the game, unfortunately for many of those people most of the tickets were already pre-booked causing a lot of sad faces. To the game, Jonas Valanciunas finally broke free from Patrick Patterson for 21 points and 16 rebounds but the team shot 35% from the floor as we take a choke hold on the series with a 97-88 victory. Kevin Durant had 27 points and 9 rebounds while Brad Beal showed his rebounding chops with 26 points and 14 rebounds. Matt Brown is becoming a fantastic all around player with 19 points, 13 assists and 8 rebounds. Darryl Iacona went 7/22 from the field for 16 points to show how bad the team shot.

Dallas leads 3-0

There is a tension in the air in Milwaukee; the city wants their team to at least win one more game. They don’t want the team to be eliminated in a sweep and more importantly they don’t want to be eliminated at their home. Sean Gilmore and Darryl Iacona both scored 20 points but Jonas Valanciunas and Thomas Cooper were both held to under double figures as we sweep the series 108-89. Jonas had 6 points and 15 rebounds while Cooper only had 9 points and 3 rebounds before fouling out. Kevin Durant was amazing with 49 points and 12 rebounds while Patrick Patterson was the man of the hour with 13 rebounds in the win. Onto the next round!

Dallas wins series 4-0

There two sweeps in these playoffs with #4 Atlanta taking very easy care of #5 Toronto. For a team with Paul Orvis, Jake Chase and Jeremy Lin the Raptors haven’t done anything of note. The other one was of no surprise with #1 New Orleans stomping #8 Miami, even with an injured Anthony Davis who is nursing a sprained ankle.

There were two upsets in the first round and both of them were sixth seeds. #6 Orlando outlasted #3 New York in seven games while the surprising #6 Nuggets also went the distance by beating the #3 Thunder.

Up Next – The very dangerous Minnesota Timberwolves.

2021 NBA Playoffs

Eastern Conference
#1 New Orleans vs. #4 Atlanta
#2 Detroit vs. #6 Orlando

Western Conference
#1 Dallas vs. #4 Minnesota
#2 Utah vs. #6 Denver

We lost the series 1-2 and that was with Andre Drummond. It’s going to be a tough slog no doubt about that.

Western Conference Semi-Final – Minnesota vs. Dallas

Point Guard
Damian Lillard vs. Matt Brown
18.8 points, 7.2 rebounds, 9.8 assists vs. 16.5 points, 6.3 rebounds, 11.0 assists

What a match up. My mind says Lillard but my heart says Brown, especially after the last series against Milwaukee. I’ll give it to Lillard for now but we are seeing the start of something special here with Brown and if he can get on top of Lillard then the sky is the limit.

Winner - Minnesota

Shooting Guard
Gary Gravitt vs. Brad Beal
3.0 points, 2.2 rebounds, 0.6 assists vs. 19.5 points, 9.0 rebounds, 1.8 assists

Beal is the better talent by far but the real story here is Gravitt’s attitude. He has been known to drop his head when things go wrong so if Beal can get into his head then it will be a long series.

Winner - Dallas

Small Forward
Jared Sullinger vs. Kevin Durant
17.2 points, 6.8 rebounds, 2.8 assists vs. 35.5 points, 11.8 rebounds, 1.8 assists

Look at those numbers for Durant in the first round of the playoffs. Truly mind blowing. Now couple that with a slow PF playing out of position in Sullinger and you have all the signs of another huge series for the scoring leader.

Winner - Dallas

Power Forward
Kevin Love vs. Harrison Barnes
34.2 points, 11.8 rebounds, 1.0 assist vs. 11.5 points, 7.8 rebounds, 1.3 assists

When I said Durant’s numbers were huge just look at Love’s. He has already snatched the highest scoring total in a playoff game ever from Michael Jordan and wants to do it again. The heart and soul of this team and Barnes will not be able to stop him.

Winner - Minnesota

Centre
Jing-xiang Mei vs. Joakim Noah
12.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 1.6 assists vs. 2.8 points, 3.8 rebounds, 0.5 assists

Talent wise the big guy from China has the edge but he is only 6’9” so Noah will be able to play on his height to gain some ground back.

Winner - Minnesota

Bench
Tyreke Evans, Marc Gasol, Jeff Teague vs. Marcus Thornton, Meyers Leonard, Patrick Patterson

For once the Mavericks’ bench is overshadowed by a far superior second unit. Evans would be starting on most teams while Teague and Gasol might not be as good as they used to be but as bench players they can pull their weight.

Winner – Minnesota

Prediction – Minnesota by six. If Andre Drummond was playing the needle would be facing the other way.

As usual the crowd is fever pitch, almost frothing at the mouth for a win. Too bad the Wolves had other ideas, scoring 44 points in the first quarter to take a 14 point lead after the first break, with Kevin Love and Damian Lillard doing all of the damage. We pegged it back slightly to just under double digits at half time but we were swimming upstream all half. We needed a spark, something. Unfortunately Minnesota had Kevin Love as they got out to a 14 point lead again going into the last quarter and we were running out of ideas. Before the last quarter Jaymes didn’t talk to the players, it was all captain Harrison Barnes. He told the team that we couldn’t let the crowd down, couldn’t let the city down and couldn’t let each other down. One person took that to heart, Kevin Durant. Our scoring leader had a whopping 23 points in the final term on his way to 55 points and 13 rebounds as we outscored our opposition 43-25 in the last to steal the win 126-120 to take first blood. Matt Brown went toe-to-toe with Damian Lillard with 17 points and 20 assists, while his match-up had 35 points on 35 shots, going 11/27 from three point land. Kevin Love cooled off after a scorching first half but still ended up with 36 points and 14 rebounds. Only after an hour or so after the game I was able to exhale after an amazing performance by Mr Kevin Durant.

Dallas leads 1-0

Game two was a much easier game on the heart as we held the Timberwolves even at half time only to break away in the third to win 119-102 to take our two home games. Kevin Durant ‘only’ had 32 points after his heroics last game but Matt Brown continued his fine form with 12 points (6/8 FG) and 21 assists while keeping Damian Lillard to 25 points and 11 assists on 9/29 shooting. Kevin Love was held to 20 points and 14 rebounds, 14 points less than his playoff average.

Dallas leads 2-0

Minnesota have never won a championship since they arrived to the league in 1989. In fact, since I arrived in the league in 2012 the Wolves have won no less than 51 games each year. I think the fan base is becoming a little restless because they have only got out of the second round twice in those eight years and they really want something more. As in shiny trophy more. As you can expect there wasn’t a seat available ever since they won the last series. However, just like our first home game the opposing superstar didn’t want anything to do with the crowd. We scored 45 points in the first quarter, outscoring the home team by nineteen points to take control of the game. We never let that control go, going on to win 120-100 to get to within one game to the WCF. Speaking of superstars, Kevin Durant had his second 50 point game of the series, scoring exactly 50 points to go along with 12 rebounds, while Brad Beal picked up the rest of the scoring with 21 points. Matt Brown had his 20 assist streak broken, only dishing out nine helpers to go along with his 12 points. Kevin Love had 25 points and 8 rebounds in a disappointing game for him, but great for Harrison Barnes while Damian Lillard shot better by still only had 21 points.

Dallas leads 3-0

Just like last series there is an air of desperation to the crowd in game four. First some numbers. Kevin Love only had 20 points and 11 rebounds. Damian Lillard went 8/26 from the field and 5/20 from three for 23 points and 9 assists. Jing-xiang Mei had 14 rebounds. Onto the Mavericks as Kevin Love had 29 points and 14 rebounds on 36 shots. Brad Beal had 20 points and 8 rebounds. Harrison Barnes was everywhere with 15 points and 13 rebounds while Matt Brown shot 8/10 for 20 points and 13 assists. Final Score – 101-84 to Dallas. The crowd was stunned as we outscored them 27-11 in the third term to take the game and the series as the home team shot only 31% from the field. I never thought we would win the series in a sweep which is great because after the game I learned that Brad Beal has sprained his toe and will need a week and a half to get healthy again so extra days off is great for him.

Dallas wins series 4-0

Detroit took care of the Magic in five games while New Orleans beat Atlanta 4-2 so the ECF is now set. #2 Utah and #6 Denver have gone the distance and I really hope the Nuggets get up in game seven. Unfortunately that isn’t the case as Lebron had 26 points and Derrick Favors put up 24 points, 11 rebounds and 4 blocks as the Jazz move on with a 131-109 victory. Damn.
