Mar 18: UNC gets upset in the first round by 12 seed Gonzaga. NC St. loses to LSU. The only team from the Carolinas still left dancing are a genuine Cinderella as the South Carolina Upstarts upset 3 seed Kentucky!

Mar 20: Back home on Sunday I watch Upstate knock off Mizzou to advance to the sweet 16 from the 14 seed. I'd rather it was us, but what a run they've had!

We'll spend the last couple of weeks of practice time allowed emphasizing our man to man defense and our offensive sets, along with a lot of individual work.

Mar 26: I announce a verbal committment from

6'5 222 lb Juco F Garvin Sanders from West Burlington, IA

Sanders is a very athletic scorer who should be able to help this team from the perimeter next year, perhaps allowing Jeffers and Felts to get a little more rest. He is ranked 72nd in the nation over all by the scouting service and 18th among small forwards.

That fills our last scholarship.

Mar 26: Upstate continued their incredible run by knocking off another Cinderella, 15 seed Delaware st. and even got to wear the home uniforms before losing to UMass in the regional finals. Well at least UMass is in the final 4, so our effort against them in retrospect looks pretty good. I'll be rooting for the Minutemen to win it all now.

10 seed Oklahoma St manages to advance to the final 4 as well, along with 2 seed Louisvile, and the only remaining 1 seed Oregon. It was definitely a tournament full of upsets.

Apr 4: Awards are announced.

With Rod Jones injured the last month of the season, I'm pleasantly surprised to see Ike Jeffers named conference player of the year. He definitely earned it, and was undoubtedly OUR most valuable player. He made a great adjustment to playing the 3, and by the seasons end had learned to play strong defense against some bigger players and had gotten the idea about going to the boards averaging 4.2/g to go with his 19.4 scoring average. He grew a lot in his first season of DI.

I am honored with coach of the year.

Felts and O'Conner are both named to the 2nd team all-conference. It was a bit of an injustice that Rod Jones didn't get at least 2nd team despite his injury. He's a special player and I know my friend Roy Thompson is going to miss him a great deal next season.

Apr 5:

Kevin stops by my office. "It's been a wonderful ride with you, Coach. I'll miss working with you."

"What are you talking about Kevin? You still have another year on your contract? Were you given an offer you can't refuse?"

"Not yet, but I have no doubt you will, and you'd be crazy not to take it. I still can't believe you turned down the Mississippi St. offer last year."

"Hold the phone, Kevin, I haven't even talked to anyone yet about another job, and I have to say, with what we have coming back next year, it's going to be hard to leave regardless. We have 6 of our top 8 returning, with over 80 percent of our scoring and about 85% of our rebounding. This team could be really special next year. Are you saying even if I stay you are leaving?"

"*sigh* If you are dumb enough to stay then I'll probably stay with you unless a DI school calls for me."

"And if I do leave? Will you come with me?"

"*shakes head* Probably not, coach. I'm not getting any younger, and if I don't get into a head coaching job soon, I probably never will. Some better DII teams have been asking after me."

"Well don't get ahead of yourself, my dear friend. It's not written in stone I'm going anywhere yet."

"Maybe not. But I still say you are crazy if you don't take a prime offer when it comes around, and it probably will. Will you promise me you will at least take a serious look at them?"

"Yeah, Kevin, I'll look. I'm not crazy."
