I'll Be a Son of a Shark

Apr 9: In the days after my talk with Kevin, Cincinatti, Florida St., and Wake Forest all inquire after me. All 3 have something in common in that they are all coming off of .500 seasons, but all 3 are losing much of this years teams to graduation. Despite the prestige of those programs, I'm not sure I want to take on that kind of rebuilding project just yet. The other inquiries are from teams that are even deeper into the rebuilding process. After much debate and blanket chewing, I've almost sure I've decided to stay here one more year and see through what I started. With most of this team's key players graduating after next year, it'll be a lot easier to leave then, and the offers might be even better if we accomplish what we are capable of doing.

Apr 16:

"I've made up my mind, Kevin. I told em I'd stay one more year."

"*sigh* You're nuts, Gary, but okay, one more year it is. Why did I let you talk me into this?"

"Because you want to see what this team can do next year, too!"

"Well, okay, there's that. But if you try talking me into another extension next year I swear I'll break your arm!"

"*laughing* Deal, Kev. But you know that when I do leave here, I'd make a big pitch for them to give the job opening to you."

"Thanks, Gary. I mean that sincerely. "

Apr 17: With Charlie Owens' contract up, I have been looking around for a new member for the coaching staff, but finding no one I am more comfortable with than Charlie, I offer him a contract for another year as well, and he gladly accepts.

Apr 23: For the first time I can ever remember, our AD has a smile on his face. A glum smile, but I'm pretty sure it's an actual smile. I saw his face crack.

"With our success this year, Gary, I think we might finally manage to get some money out of the board."

"I should hope so. They SHOULD give me a new practice facilty, a ton of recruiting money, and another 50,000 or so a year on my contract. I'll settle for another 25,000 in the recruiting budget."

"Perhaps if you were willing to commit to the program for another year after next..."

"Don't push it. They owe this program some commitment themselves, and if they don't start providing it, they won't likely get anyone in here after I leave either that will be willing to put up with their nonsense."

Apr 30: THOSE DAMNED CHEAPSKATES! They won't give me a red cent! They'd better enjoy whatever success we have next year, because unless they hire Kevin as my replacement, and he's dumb enough to accept the offer, it may be the last winning season they have for a long long time.

The University of Washington WAS going to offer you a job, but when they heard of your feelings about Gulag Seattle, they held off calling you.

At any rate, it was nothing against Seattle per se, I just love grey skies and perpetual rain. But have you ever flown 4500 miles with a 6'10" 286 lb eating machine? When Godzilla started putting hot sauce on my arms I thought I was a goner.
