NCAA Selection Show

Postby PointGuard » Wed May 08, 2013 1:37 am

#1’s: Duke, Michigan, Florida, Louisville

Chicago State was selected for one of the play-in games and will play Sacred Heart

After the NCAA brackets are set, we fail to get a call from the NIT or CBI. Not surprising, but a let-down none-the-less.

NCAA Play-in Game

Postby PointGuard » Wed May 08, 2013 1:40 am

Chicago State (13-17) vs Sacred Heart (13-18)—Chicago State continued their hot streak. They established a 46-32 halftime lead then increased that margin in the 2nd half. They hit 61% of their shots and out-played Sacred Heart in every aspect of the game. High point man for Chicago State was Aaron Fox who scored 18. Sacred Heart was led by Chris Shipley’s 15 points. Final Score: Chicago State-87, Sacred Heart-69.

The win earned Chicago State the honor of playing #1 Duke.

NCAA Round 1

Postby PointGuard » Wed May 08, 2013 1:42 am

Chicago State (14-17) vs Duke (23-5)—Duke took Chicago State apart in the first half and led 38-22 at the break. But Chicago State never gave up and outscored Duke by 11 in the 2nd half to nearly win the game and give Duke a big scare. Kenny Nelson scored 16 for Chicago State. Ed Howe scored 20 and pulled down 12 rebounds for Duke. Final Score: Duke-73, Chicago State-68.

Chicago State should really be proud of the way they ended the year, pulling off 3 upsets in the Conference Tourney, winning the NCAA play-in game, and then giving Duke all they could handle in Round 1.

Spring Recruiting

Postby PointGuard » Wed May 08, 2013 1:46 am

March 19—I visit SG Travis Trent, SF Isaac Bryson, C Mark Saunders, and PF Mitchell Jarmond. I offer scholarships to Travis Trent and Mark Saunders to go along with the 3 we already had on the table from this fall (and had been working with to increase their levels of interest throughout the fall and winter).

Visits to Bryson and Jarmond went very well and Saunders and his family were really impressed, but Trent can’t see himself playing for us so scholarship withdrawn.

April 2—Offered last scholarship to SG Marcus Evans.

April 9—I visit SF Isaac Bryson, C Mark Saunders, PF Mitchell Jarmond and PG Randy Durham. All visits went very well.

April 16—It’s been a long, hard recruiting season, but finally we have success. All five players to whom we have scholarships offered, accept and sign LOI’s:

SF Isaac Bryson, 6-8 JC Soph, Littleton, CO, 2.4 GPA—15.9 ppg, 4.9 apg, 8.3 rpg, 3.0 spg, 3.6 bpg—An excellent scorer who shoots well from outside; Excellent rebounder; Excellent defender who’s good at shot blocking and stealing; Excellent passer but needs to work on ball handling; Very strong athleticism; Can step out and shoot the 3; Can drive to the basket but not strong suit; Rarely missed practices; Primarily a jump shooter; Hard working kid; While not a leader he doesn’t cause problems—Ranked #31 in nation and #9 at his position; Overall rating: A.

SG Marcus Evans, 6-4 JC Soph, Reisterstown, MD, 2.2 GPA—22.1 ppg, 4.4 apg, 6.1 rpg, 2.7 spg, 2.0 bpg—Great scorer; Excellent defender; Very good passer; Rarely missed practice; Comfortable stepping out and shooting 3’s—Ranked #37 in nation and #12 at his position; Overall rating: A.

PG Randy Durham, 6-4 JC Soph, Sidney, NY, 2.3 GPA—17.1 ppg, 7.8 apg, 7.1 rpg, 2.0 spg, 3.1 bpg—Excellent scorer and very good outside shooter; Excellent passer and ball handler; Very good defensively who is a strong shot blocker; More of a stand-still player than a slasher-type; Doesn’t shoot many 3’s; Drives to the basket occasionally but not his strong suit; Primarily a jump shooter; Tremendous work ethic—Ranked #39 in nation and #5 at his position; Overall rating: A.

C Mark Saunders, 6-9 HS Sr, Elkton, MD, 2.2 GPA (860 SAT)—14.2 ppg, 2.9 apg, 9.6 rpg, 2.3 spg, 4.3 bpg—Very good scorer with strong inside shooting skills; Very good rebounder; Very good defensively and outstanding shot blocker; Weak ball handler and free throw shooter; Very low athleticism; Not comfortable putting the ball on the floor; Balanced player; Tremendous work ethic; Avoids the post; Doesn’t have many problems with injuries—Ranked #72 in the nation and #11 at his position; Overall rating: B.

PF Mitchell Jarmond, 6-6 HS Sr, El Monte, CA, 3.2 GPA (1010 SAT)—16.1 ppg, 4.0 apg, 10.7 rpg, 2.2 spg, 2.9 bpg—Very good scorer; Good rebounder and defender; Strong athleticism; Top 25 at Las Vegas Revue Camp; Tremendous work ethic; Not a leader but doesn’t cause problems either; Primarily a jump shooter; Avoids the post; Balanced player; Not many problems with injuries—Ranked #192 in the nation and #36 at his position; Overall rating: B.

The Juco players look like they should be able to step right into key positions for us next year, but I’m really happy that we were able to get 2 high school players who I think will develop into strong players for us by their sophomore years.

No head coaching job offers, but had no plans to leave CSU Bakersfield anyway.
